Previous studies of a hybrid zone between the mussels Mytilus edulis Linnaeus and M. galloprovincialis Lamarck have not resolved the relative importance of the genetic composition of settling larval cohorts versus post-settlement selection in determining the distribution of the parental species and their hybrids. In the present study, recently settled mussels (spat) were collected from 20 sites in southwest England throughout the summer and fall (May–October) in 1998 and 1999. This study investigated the spatio-temporal patterns of settlement and genetics of mussel spat by genetically identifying M. edulis, M. galloprovincialis and their hybrids using the diagnostic PCR marker Glu-5. Settlement was observed earlier in populations of M. edulis than in populations of M. galloprovincialis. Settlement occurred in hybrid populations at times intermediate to and overlapping with both of the parental populations. Temporal genetic variation within years was rare at most sites, while there was some variation between the two years. Spatial genetic variation, however, was common among spat settling within the hybrid populations and matched that observed in small, sub-adults at the same sites. No consistent directional changes in allele frequency were observed over the course of several weeks after settlement. These data suggest that the observed spatial variation in the adult populations is the result of spatial variation in settling larval cohorts and not of either temporal genetic variation or of selection soon after settlement.Communicated by J.P. In January and February 1992 an experiment was conducted in a 10.5-m deep tank (diameter: 3.7 m, volume: 117 m3) to examine the effects of food distribution with respect to a stable thermocline, depth, and substratum type on the settlement and metamorphosis of larvae of the giant scallop, Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin). Polyethylene tube bags (diameter: 0.60 m) were used to enclose 9-m deep columns of seawater which were then used as treatment replicates. A sharp thermocline (i.e. 7 to 11°C gradient) was created between a depth of 4.0 and 5.0 m. At the beginning of the experiment, one million 6-d old larvae were added to the surface of each tube. Two or three replicate tubes of each of four feeding treatments were established: (1) food (Isochrysis galbana) added to the top 1 m of the water column (top-fed, n=3); (2) food added to the bottom 1 m of the water column (bottom-fed, n=3); (3) food added throughout the water column (mixed, n=3); and (4) no food added (unfed, n=2). Settlement collectors were placed in two replicate tubes of each treatment at depths of 0.1, 4, 5, and 9 m and contained two different substrata, Polysiphonia lanosa (a red filamentous alga) and aquarium filter-wool as an algal mimic. Spat settlement in the different feeding treatments was a function of larval growth rate. Most spat were collected in the mixed tubes. Fewer individuals were collected in the top-fed treatment and fewer still in the bottom-fed treatment; minimal numbers of spat were found in the unfed tubes. Filter-wool collected more spat than P. lanosa, but this was evident only in the 4-m deep collectors in the mixed tubes. Most spat were found in the 0.1-m or 4-m deep collectors; generally few were located below the thermocline in collectors at 5 or 9 m. We suggest that, in areas of intense stable stratification, spat collection of the giant scallop may be enhanced by the placement of collectors with appropriate substratum material at or above the zone of stratification, rather than near the bottom. Furthermore, we propose that natural settlement may be increased in areas where a stratification layer intersects with the sea floor or where the layer is disrupted by turbulent mixing.Contribution to the programs of OPEN (Ocean Production Enhancement Network, one of the 15 Networks of Centres of Excellence supported by the Government of Canada) and GIROQ (Group Interuniversitaire de Recherches Océanographiques du Québec)  相似文献

We determined the ability of competent laboratory-reared Homarus americanus postlarvae to use odor plumes as a potential mechanism of orientation during the habitat selection process at settlement. In a Y-maze apparatus, both swimming direction (upstream or downstream) and arm selection (control or experimental) were strongly influenced by the nature of the chemical stimulus tested. In control conditions (unconditioned water in both proximal arms of the experimental device), postlarvae swam predominantly upstream (61:39) but displayed no arm preference (48:52). When submitted to a metabolite solution of adult conspecifics or macroalgae, postlarvae swam consistently upstream (73%) and showed a significant preference for the arm providing these stimuli (69%). In contrast, postlarvae submitted to cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus) metabolites swam predominantly downstream (68:32), and those that did swim upstream significantly avoided the experimental arm (30:70). In repeated trials with the same individuals, postlarvae behaved similarly in 80% of the assays, suggesting a low intra-individual variability in behavioural responses. It is concluded that distance chemoreception may play a role in habitat selection by lobster postlarvae at settlement.  相似文献

Lipophilic inducers of larval settlement and metamorphosis of Pseudocentrotus depressus and Anthocidaris crassispina, two commercially important sea urchin species in Japan, were isolated from the foliose coralline red alga Corallina pilulifera (collected in 1990 near Saga, Japan) and identified. Larval assays of the fractions obtained by silica gel column chromatography of the total lipids showed that non-polar groups of lipids were effective at inducing larval settlement and metamorphosis. The effective fractions were further subjected to gel filtration (Sephadex LH-20) and also to silica gel column chromatography, and the effective components isolated as single spots by thin-layer chromatography. The components at a concentration of ca. 0.4 mg paper-1 (sample was adsorbed on a paper with 20 cm2) induced high rates of larval settlement of both P. depressus and A. crassispina. Chemical analyses of the components revealed a mixture of free fatty acids (FFAs), dominated by eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5, 41 to 50%), palmitic acid (16:0, 11 to 17%), arachidonic acid (20:4, 9 to 15%), and palmitoleic acid (16:1, 4 to 5%). In assays with the four standard FFAs, only 20:4 and 20:5 induced larval settlement and metamorphosis of the two species, while 16:0 and 16:1 were ineffective. The larvae underwent significant rates of settlement and metamorphosis in response to the two former FFAs at levels as low as 0.18 mg paper-1. Amongst the free fatty acid components of the alga, 20:5 was isolated as the chemical inducer of larval settlement and metamorphosis of the sea urchins in the laboratory.  相似文献

The acute and long-term effects of neurotransmitters dopamine (DA), serotonin (SE) and norepinephrine (NE) on the feeding rates of Mytilus edulis veliger larvae were investigated through concentration-response curves. Increasing DA concentrations increasingly inhibited food uptake. Acute exposure to high levels of DA caused long-term inhibitory effects on feeding rates (10–5 MDA) and growth rates (3x10–4 MDA). Feeding activity was also inversely related to NE concentration. SE concentrations between 10–8–3x10–7 M supported enhanced feeding rates. Neither NE nor SE showed long-term inhibitory effects on feeding at concentrations <10–4 M. These results were consistent with the observed effects of the different neurotransmitters on the swimming pattern of the larvae. The experimental evidence supports the model of ciliary control in adult mussels, involving dual innervation of the ciliated cells of the velum, with excitatory serotonergic and inhibitory dopaminergic fibers.  相似文献

Eggs of Aplysia oculifera (Adams and Reeve, 1850) were incubated in the laboratory. They hatched 8 to 9 d after spawning. Shell length (SL) of the hatched larvae was 102±2 m. Larvae were fed on the unicellular algae Isochrysis galbana in a concentration of 104 cell ml-1, and after 45 to 60 d grew to a maximum SL of 385±11 m. Larvae survived up to 330 d. A total of 12 species of algae from the natural habitat of A. oculifera were examined as metamorphosis inducers. Red algae Dasia sp., Jania sp., Hypnea sp. and Liagora sp. induced metamorphosis in 66.7±21.2, 28.3±17.7, 26.0±18.5 and 4.0±8.0% of the larvae, respectively. Green algae Enteromorpha intestinalis and Ulva sp. induced metamorphosis in 37.0±11.0 and 9.0±10.4% of the larvae, respectively. Cladophora sp. and Codium dichotomum, and the brown algae Padina pavonia, Colpomenia sinuosa, Hydroclathrus clathratus and Cystoseira sp. did not induce metamorphosis. There was no significant difference in the rate of metamorphosis between young (2 to 4 mo) and old (6 to 8 mo) larvae. Postmetamorphic juveniles grew and developed only when fed with E. intestinalis. They grew to a body length of>8 mm in 50 d. Postmetamorphic juveniles did not survive on other algae. The longevity of the planktonic A. oculifera larvae supports the hypothesis that the larvae can exist in the plankton and survive for several months until the next recruitment. The advantage of non-specificity in metamorphosis induction is discussed.  相似文献

Vegetative buds of Cassiopea andromeda (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) metamorphose into polyps in the presence of short synthetic peptides containing proline as the preterminal amino acid at the carboxyl terminus. In an in vivo assay, the binding of the biologically active hexapeptide 14C-dansyl-GPGGPA in buds was shown to be specific and saturable. Scatchard plot analysis of the specific binding data revealed a dissociation constant (K D) of about 7 M. The total number of receptors was calculated to be approximately 1×1010 bud-1 under saturation conditions. In correlation with the results of prior investigations, our finding of receptor-mediated induction of metamorphosis strongly supports the hypothesis that binding of biologically active peptides to receptors leads to initiation of phosphatidylinositol breakdown and activation of protein kinase C.  相似文献

Naturally-occurring lipophilic inducers of larval settlement and metamorphosis wer isolated and identified for Phragmatopoma californica, a gregarious tube worm from southern California. Organic solvent extraction of the sand/organic cement matrix of tubes diminished the inducing capacity of the tube matrix. The inducing capacity was restricted to a single, highly active, HPLC-purified fraction of the organic solvent extract. Chemical analysis of this fraction revealed a mixture of free fatty acids (FFAs), dominated by eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5, 20%), palmitic acid (16:0, 14%) and palmitoleic acid (16:1, 12%). In assays of the nine FFAs that each contributed 3% or more to the active fraction, only 16:1, 18:2, 20:4 and 20:5 induced larval settlement and metamorphosis, while the others were ineffective. The larval response was contact-dependent, highly specific, and concentration-dependent, with a significant response to 16:1 and 20:4 at as low as 10 g FFA spread onto 1 g of sand (surface area 36 cm2). Active FFAs were extracted at approximately 14 g g-1 sand from the tube matrix, although the levels encountered by larvae in nature are believed to be higher.  相似文献

Settlement and metamorphosis in larvae of Bowerbankia gracilis depend on the wettability of the substratum. The wettability of a solid can be characterized by it's specific contact angle, . Larvae settle on solids with angles >17°, but not on surfaces with high wettability properties. In an attempt to explain this phenomenon, we consider the larvae as a second liquid and their attachment as a second wetting. In such case, water and larvae would compete in wetting the substratum. Adhesion can be accounted for by assuming the wetting tension of solid to water to be lower than that of the larval surface (|solid/water| < |solid/larvae|). Adhesion would thus be favoured energetically. The rate of settlement and that of metamorphosis are demonstrated as depending on the degree of contact angle, , in an all-or-none fashion. Settlement of larvae on high-wetting solids is prevented by high capillary pressure accruing at the point of contact. Metamorphosis is initiated by contractions occurring after adhesion. Application of CsCl or KCl induces such contractions and metamorphosis in free-swimming larvae. MgCl2 prevents the onset of metamorphosis but not adhesion. Two mechanisms are considered as possibly accounting for induction of metamorphosis: (1) mechanical stimulation by shearing the cilia at the point of contact, and (2) a chemical stimulation of the cell membrane after application of K+ or Cs+.  相似文献

The induction of metamorphosis in mature larvae by selected chemical compounds and natural substrata was investigated in two species of sea urchins from the Sea of Japan, Strongylocentrotus intermedius and Scaphechinus mirabilis. Glutamine in crystalline form was added directly to water containing mature larvae, and this compound, at a final concentration of 10 g ml-1, was an inducer of metamorphosis in S. intermedius (100% activity) and S. mirabilis (50% activity). Gutamine, or its natural mimetic molecules, may be an active component of the exogenous cue that induces metamorphosis of S. intermedius larvae. This exogenous cue was produced by the epiphytic calcareous algae, Melobesia spp. that colonized the older sea grass Zostera marina. Glutamic acid was also used as an inducer of metamorphosis for S. intermedius and S. mirabilis larvae (50 to 60% activity), but it was toxic to the larvae.  相似文献

Large samples of the sea urchin Echinus affinis Mortensen were obtained from a time-series of Agassiz trawlings from a 2 200 m-deep permanent station (Station M), and at neighbouring positions, in the Rockall Trough (North-east Atlantic Ocean) over a period of 7 yr (1978 to 1985). Counts of growth zones visible in the skeletal elements of the test were used to age individuals. Various growth functions were fitted to counts from a full range of the sizes available. Functions giving a sigmoidal growth curve fit the early phase of growth better than the von Bertalanffy model, although the latter provided better fit amongst larger sizes. The fit of a robust and flexible model recently developed by Preece and Baines to describe the human growth curve overcame this limitation. Skeletal banding is thought to result from seasonally varying growth as a result of annually pulsed fallout of phyto-detrital food to the deep-sea floor. Early stages were found in only a few of a time series of samples obtained with a fine-meshed epibenthic sledge, suggesting that recruitment to the population from its annual breeding may only occasionally be successful. Postlarval growth was estimated from samples taken soon after presumed settlement and later in the year. The fitted growth curve showed good agreement to that obtained from annual banding, and corroborates an initially exponentially increasing growth rate. Postlarval survivorship was estimated, by means of computer simulation, from a sample that included postlarvae along with a range in juvenile size, to be about 10% amongst postlarvae after settlement and thereafter about 90% yr-1. Adults are inferred to be up to about 28 yr old. A markedly uneven representation of ages in a large subsample of aged adults of even frequency in size is interpreted by means of simulations as probably reflecting multi-year cycles in recruitment success. The possible causes of a varying size structure amongst large samples of adults, which showed some spatial segregation in relation to the track of the trawl on the bottom at Station M, are discussed.  相似文献

Veliger larvae of the oysterCrassostrea gigas (Thunberg) responded to unknown dissolved chemical inducers found in supernatants of cultures of the bacteriaAlteromonas colwelliana andVibrio cholerae. The response, which was similar to that seen when larvae were exposed to the neurotransmitter precursor L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), consisted of an initial settlement phase of swimming with the foot extended and crawling on the substrate. Subsequently larvae attached to the substrate and metamorphosed. The percentage of veligers metamorphosing following inducation of settlement behavior was higher in a group of older larvae, a response similar to that seen with L-DOPA, suggesting that competence to respond to bacterial supernatants is divided into two phases: behavioral competence followed by morphogenetic competence. Following size exclusion chromatography, the molecular weight of the peak containing the activity which induced settlement behavior was determined to be 300 daltons. Autoclaved Marine Broth, which induced low levels of settlement behavior also contained this low molecular weight active peak, suggesting that an oyster settlement inducer is also present in this medium.Contribution # 137 from the Center of Biotechnology, Marine Biotechnology Institute, University of Maryland, USA  相似文献

In aquaculture centers of the northern region of Japan, "Nami-ita" (waved polycarbonate plates), on which the green alga Ulvella lens Crouan frat. (Chaetophoraceae: Chaetophorales) was cultured, are used to promote larval settlement and metamorphosis of the sea urchin species Strongylocentrotus intermedius (A. Agassiz) and S. nudus (A. Agassiz). We investigated chemical inducer(s) for larval settlement and metamorphosis of these sea urchins with extracts of U. lens. Bioassay-guided separation of the methanol extract using a combination of column and thin-layer chromatography led to the isolation of several active compounds, the chemical structures of which were determined by spectral and chemical methods. These active compounds were identified as glycoglycerolipids, all comprising several molecular species: sulfoquinovosyl monoacylglycerols (SQMGs), sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerols (SQDGs), monogalactosyl monoacylglycerols (MGMGs), monogalactosyl diacylglycerols (MGDGs), digalactosyl monoacylglycerols (DGMGs) and digalactosyl diacylglycerols (DGDGs). Among these glycolipids, SQMGs, MGMGs, MGDGs and DGMGs induced larval metamorphosis of the sea urchin S. intermedius. SQMGs and MGDGs induced larval metamorphosis at a concentration of 5 µg ml-1, whereas SQDGs and DGDGs only induced larval settlement. These glycoglycerolipids are new congeners of chemical inducers to settlement and metamorphosis of planktonic larvae of sea urchins. The findings would provide a better understanding of larval settlement and metamorphosis in sea urchins.  相似文献

Laboratory-cultured larvae of the black chiton Katharina tunicata (Wood), collected from central California in May and June of 1979 and 1980, settled preferentially on the encrusting coralline alga Lithothamnium sp. Metamorphosis, which involves the loss of the prototrochal ciliary band, occurred within a period of 2.5 h after larvae began crawling upon the alga. In response to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at a concentration of 10-6 M, the lecithotrophic trochophore larvae ceased swimming and settled rapidly. Developmental metamorphosis did not follow settlement in the absence of encrusting coralline alga. However, when both GABA and Lithothamnium sp. were present, larval metamorphosis occurred within 2 h of settlement. Significantly different rates of settlement exist for sibling larvae of different ages; 12 d-old larvae responded more rapily and in greater numbers to treatment with GABA than 10 d-old larvae. Differences in settling rates are attributed to the onset of metamorphic competence.  相似文献

Metamorphosis and early juvenile development was followed in the laboratory in Balanus amphitrite and B. improvisus (family Balanidae) and in Semibalanus balanoides and Elminius modestus (family Archaeobalanidae) from cyprid settlement until 24 h after ecdysis. Stages of development were studied in vivo and with scanning electron microscopy. Events in metamorphosis and early juvenile development are very similar in all four species and can be interpreted in terms of a highly modified moult. Notably, there was no indication whatsoever of the amorphous decorticated settler previously described from metamorphosis of B. amphitrite. The shape of a juvenile barnacle with cirri and incipient shell plates is apparent immediately after the shedding of the cypris carapace, and rudimentary peduncle can be distinguished below the developing wall plates. A basal row of cuticular hairs encircles the peduncle in all species except S. balanoides. These hairs seem to serve a restraining function during early development, when the juvenile barnacle is only attached by the initially secreted cyprid cement. Similarly situated hairs are also present in very young juveniles of the lepadomorph Scalpellum scalpellum. In Semibalanus balanoides nothing indicates that the rostrum originates from the fusion of two latera as previously claimed, since this plate is single as soon as it can be distinguished.  相似文献

The population dynamics of small tiger prawns (Penaeus esculentus and P. semisulcatus) were studied at three sites around north-western Groote Eylandt, Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia, between August 1983 and August 1984. Seagrasses typical of open-coastline, reef-flat and river-mouth communities were found in the shallow depths (2.5 m) at these sites. The temperature and salinity of the bottom waters did not differ among the shallowest depths of the three sites and mean values at night ranged from 21.9 to 32.0 °C, and from 30.1 to 37.5% S. Data from fortnightly sampling with beam trawls showed that virtually all post-larvae (90%) were caught in the intertidal and shallow subtidal waters (2.0 m deep). At one site, where the relationship between seagrass biomass, catches and depth could be studied in detail, high catches were confined to seagrass in shallow water, within 200 m of the high-water mark. This was despite the fact that seagrass beds of high biomass (>100 g m-2 between August and February) were found nearby, in only slightly deeper water (2.5 m). It is likely, therefore, that only the seagrass beds in shallow waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria act as important settlement and nursery areas for tiger prawns. In general, catches of tiger prawn postlarvae (both P. esculentus and P. semisulcatus) and juvenile P. esculentus on the seagrass in the shallowest waters at each site were higher in the tropical prewet (October–December) and wet (January–March) seasons than at other times of the year. Juvenile P. semisulcatus catches were highest in the pre-wet season. While seasonal differences accounted for the highest proportion of variation in catches of tiger prawn postlarvae and juvenile P. semisulcatus, site was the most important factor for juvenile P. esculentus. In each season, catches of juvenile P. esculentus were highest in the shallow, open-coastline seagrass, where the biomass of seagrass was highest. The fact that the type of seagrass community appears to be more important to juvenile P. esculentus than to postlarvae, suggests that characteristics of the seagrass community may affect the survival or emigration of postlarval tiger prawns. Few prawns (<10%) from the seagrass communities in shallow waters exceeded 10.5 mm in carapace length. Despite the intensive sampling, growth was difficult to estimate because postlarvae recruited to the seagrass beds over a long period, and the residence times of juveniles in the sampling area were relatively short (8 wk).  相似文献

A static renewal test was run for 30 d to assess the effects of the antifoulant tributyltin (TBT, nominal concentrations of 50, 125, 250 and 500 ng Sn l-1) on the survival and growth of 240 m-long pediveliger larvae of the bivalve Scrobicularia plana (da Costa) settling in fine sand. Exposure to nominal TBT levels of 125 ng Sn l-1 (actual range of 37 to 102 ng Sn l-1, as analysed) resulted in substantial mortalities and negligible shell growth of individuals. More importantly, larval shell growth at the lowest concentration tested (i.e. nominal 50 ng Sn l-1 or 14 to 32 ng Sn l-1, as analysed) was significantly reduced (by a factor of 4) and grossly abnormal. In contrast, some control postlarvae had begun developing siphons as they attained a length of 600 to 700 m by the end of this test, thereby completing metamorphosis and becoming juveniles. The results are discussed in relation to the widespread disappearance of S. plana in North Atlantic European estuaries during the 1980s and the concurrent TBT pollution in their waters. It is inferred that TBT is likely to have contributed to the reported demise of clam populations by preventing the successful and timely progress of their pediveliger larvae.  相似文献

Analysis of biochemical components and measurements of oxygen consumption rates of cypris larvae of Balanus balanoides (L.) maintained in the laboratory at 10°C for up to 5 weeks after capture shows that lipid is the primary energy reserve, although later protein is utilised. Initially, the cyprids swim freely with an oxygen consumption rate of ca. 37×10-3 l O2 h-1 cyprid-1, but within a few days the rate falls to ca. 21×10-3 l O2 h-1 cyprid-1 when they cease swimming and explore the substratum. The cost of metamorphosis was calculated both from the loss of biochemical components and oxygen consumption rates during metamorphosis; the values were 2.8×10-2 and 3.2×10-2 cal cyprid-1, respectively. A budget was collated from the data on respiration and biochemical composition, whereby the energy per cyprid was partitioned into that required for essential structural components (6.8×10-2 cal), that needed for metamorphosis (3.0×10-2 cal) and an excess available for swimming and exploring, which in the batches studied was about 5.0×10-2 cal. This excess is mainly derived from the utilisation of lipid reserves and is used up usually 2 1/2 to 4 weeks after capture. During these measurements, samples of cyprids were taken at weekly intervals to test the rate of settlement and success of metamorphosis. The results showed that they lose their competence to metamorphose successfully approximately at the same time (3 to 4 weeks) that the energy supply for swimming and exploration is used up.  相似文献

Despite the importance of the gills in the acquisition of food by suspension-feeding bivalve mollusks, there is almost no information on gill organogenesis. By means of a series of stereoscan electron micrographs, this paper describes gill development in the Chilean oyster, Ostrea chilensis, from the brooded larval stages to 1-month-old spat. A single gill rudiment was observed on each side of the mantle at a shell length of 320 μm, and the rudiments increased in number and size until the end of the brooding period. During metamorphosis the gill filaments increased in number from 5 or 6 to between 7 and 9. The loss of the velum and the absence of functional gill filaments during metamorphosis are consistent with previous observations of weight loss during this critical period of the life history, because the newly settled juvenile lacks the ability to remove particles from suspension. The end of metamorphosis (100% of spat with dissoconch edge) was reached 36 h after larval settlement, when the gill filaments began to grow cilia, which increased in density and differentiated as the spat developed and acquired the capability of suspension-feeding, accounting for the increase in body weight previously recorded during this stage. The larval rudiments gave rise to the inner demibranchs. The outer demibranchs were observed 10 days after settlement, located between the inner demibranch and the mantle. In 1-month-old spat, the gill did not show differentiation between primary and secondary filaments, indicating that the heterorhabdic condition characteristic of adult oysters had yet to be attained. Samples were taken from a 2 900 m deep permanent station (centred on 54°40N; 12°16W) in the southern Rockall Trough, from November 1975 to September 1980, inclusive. Revision of juvenile size frequencies was necessary after removal of postlarvae of an annual non-viable settlement of Ophiocten gracilis (G. O. Sars) that were mistakenly included in a previous analysis. The present study of the revised data shows that settlement of Ophiura ljungmani (Lyman) occurs in summer when disk-size frequencies are dominated by the newly metamorphosed postlarvae. The likely age composition in larger sizes was suggested from the progression of modes along the size axis in juvenile size classes in consecutive were developed from Gaussian mixtures fitted by constrained computer search using, as starting values, component parameter values suggested from the frequency histograms. Choice between competing solutions was made on the basis both of goodness-of-fit and biological plausibility. However, identification of year-class structure amongst sizes >3 to 4 mm disk diameter remained conjectural owing to the low frequencies of adults in the samples. Comparison of the fitted component-means in the time series suggested a marked seasonal growth pattern, with maximal growth in spring. Probable age composition amongst adult sizes was extrapolated from von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from the means of juvenile year classes.Communicated by J. Mauchline, Oban  相似文献
