Cuckoo growth performance in parasitized and unused hosts: not only host size matters 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Tomáš Grim 《Behavioral ecology and sociobiology》2006,60(5):716-723
The quality and quantity of food delivered to young are among the major determinants of fitness. A parental provisioning capacity is known to increase with body size. Therefore, brood parasitism provides an opportunity to test the effects of varying provisioning abilities of different-sized hosts on parasitic chick growth and fledging success. Knowledge of growth patterns of common cuckoo, Cuculus canorus, chicks in nests of common hosts is very poor. Moreover, no study to date has focused on any currently unused hosts (i.e., suitable cuckoo host species in which parasitism is currently rare or absent). Here, I compare the growth performance of cuckoo chicks in nests of a common host (the reed warbler, Acrocephalus scirpaceus) and two unparasitized hosts (the song thrush, Turdus philomelos, and the blackbird, Turdus merula). Parasitic chicks were sole occupants of the observed nests, thus eliminating the confounding effect of competition with host chicks. Experiments revealed striking differences in parasitic chick growth in the two closely related Turdus hosts. Cuckoo chicks cross-fostered to song thrush nests grew much quicker and attained much higher mass at fledging than those in nests of their common reed warbler host. Alternatively, parasitic chicks in blackbird nests grew poorly and did not survive until fledging. I discuss these observations with respect to host selection by parasitic cuckoos. 相似文献

The presumed trade-off between offspring size and quality predicted by life history theory is often invoked to explain the wide range of propagule sizes observed in animals and plants. This trade-off is broadly supported by intraspecific studies but has been difficult to test in an interspecific context, particularly in animals. We tested the fitness consequences of offspring size both intra- and interspecifically for seven species of ascidians (sessile, suspension-feeding, marine invertebrates) whose offspring volumes varied over three orders of magnitude. We measured two major components of fitness, juvenile growth rates and survival, in laboratory and field experiments encompassing several food conditions. Contrary to the predictions of life history theory, larger offspring size did not result in higher rates of growth or survival, and large offspring did not perform better under nutritional stress, either intraspecifically or interspecifically. In fact, two of the four species with small offspring grew rapidly enough to catch up in size to the species with large offspring in as little as eight weeks, under wild-type food conditions. Trade-offs between growth potential and defense may overwhelm and obscure any trade-offs between offspring size and survival or growth rate. While large initial size may still confer a competitive advantage, we failed to detect any consequences of interspecific variation in initial size. This implies that larger offspring in these species, far from being inherently superior in growth or survival, require compensation in other aspects of life history if reproductive effort is to be efficient. Our results suggest that the importance of initial offspring size is context dependent and often overestimated relative to other life history traits. 相似文献

Many studies comparing the behaviour of individuals of different genders or species showed that animal body mass and forage quality/quantity are key elements of the foraging ecology of herbivores. Since body mass could also influence the animal’s sensitivity to predation risk, its vigilance behaviour should consequently be affected. Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) is characterised by a strong dimorphism among males of different ages, thus representing an ideal case study for testing the Jarman-Bell principle, avoiding possibly misleading effects resulting from the comparison between different species or genders. We analysed the fine-scale foraging behaviour of male ibex in order to assess the effect of body mass and the effects of vegetation quality/quantity on both foraging and vigilance behaviour. Our results showed that smaller males were more selective than larger ones, on account of their lower capability of digesting plant. Smaller males scanned the environment more frequently than larger ones. Male ibex grazed more selectively in sites with high quality forage and their bite rate increased as forage biomass decreased. Vigilance frequency increased with increasing forage biomass as, under these circumstances, ibex are able to prolong anti-predator vigilance while chewing bites that have already been cropped. Our findings highlight the effects of body mass per se on both foraging and anti-predator behaviours in herbivores, thus supporting the Jarman-Bell principle. Foraging can arguably be considered a very flexible behaviour with high evolutionary relevance as it enables herbivores to optimally adjust their total energy intake under varying conditions of food resources. 相似文献

Models of parasite-mediated sexual selection have thus far overlooked the potential effects of parasites of females on their
hosts’ ability to choose mates. A set of models addressing this issue is developed, each building on the previous one to add
complexity and realism to the framework. The selection coefficient for parasite immunity and brightness is estimated using
the ratio of the fitness of susceptible males to the fitness of immune males. Parasite-induced reduction in female choosiness
can substantially relax the selection for bright, immune males, especially when: (1) immunity to parasites is rare in the
population, (2) parasites are not highly aggregated within the host population, (3) parasites are abundant, and (4) the effects
of parasites on male brightness or female choosiness are severe. Parasite-induced variability in male brightness is most likely
to occur in populations in which parasites are abundant and not aggregated; if females in those populations show a reduced
preference for bright males, sexual selection for brightness (and parasite immunity) will still operate but exert a weaker
selective pressure.

Summary I tested the hypothesis that bright breeding plumage in territorial males acts as a badge of fighting ability or aggressive motivation to intimidate intruders. Territorial male purple martins (Progne subis) whose iridescent blue plumage was lightened to mimic the appearance of subadult males did not suffer an increase in intruder pressure or loss of territory compared with control males. Bright plumage color itself did not deter intruders and was not important for successful territory defense. Furthermore, a bright coloration of owners was not associated with an increased level of aggression toward intruders. Results from parallel studies on this species suggest that bright coloration is important in territory acquisition. The effectiveness of badges of fighting ability and aggressive motivation in territory defense is limited by whether intruders benefit from assessing these traits in owners. Differences in signaling systems between species are due in part to differences in floater tactics and the mode of territory acquisition. 相似文献

The relationship between plant nutrient content and insect herbivore populations and community structure has long interested ecologists. Insect herbivores require multiple nutrients, but ecologists have focused mostly on nitrogen (an estimate of plant protein content), and more recently phosphorus (P); other nutrients have received little attention. Here we document nutrient variation in grass and forb samples from grassland habitats in central Nebraska using an elemental approach; in total we measured foliar concentrations of 12 elements (N and P, plus S, B, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Zn, Fe, Mn, and Cu). We detected significant variability among sites for N, P, Mg, Na, K, and Cu. We next used a model selection approach to explore how this nutritional variation and plant biomass correlate with grasshopper densities (collectively and at the feeding-guild level), and principal component analysis to explore nutrient correlations with grasshopper community species composition. When all grasshoppers were pooled, densities varied among sites, but only P was associated with abundance of the elements shown to vary between sites. Different responses occurred at the feeding-guild level. For grass specialists, densities were associated with N, plus P, Mg, and Na. For forb specialists, N and P were often associated with density, but associations with Na and K were also observed. Finally, mixed-feeder abundance was strongly associated with biomass, and to a lesser extent P, Mg, Na, and Cu. At the community level, B, Ca, Zn, and Cu, plus biomass, explained > 30% of species composition variation. Our results confirm the positive association of N and P with insect herbivore populations, while suggesting a potential role for Mg, Na, and K. They also demonstrate the importance of exploring effects at the feeding-guild level. We hope our data motivate ecologists to think beyond N and P when considering plant nutrient effects on insect herbivores, and make a call for studies to examine functional responses of insect herbivores to dietary manipulation of Mg, Na, and K. Finally, our results demonstrate correlations between variation in nutrients and species assemblages, but factors not linked to plant nutrient quality or biomass likely explain most of the observed variation. 相似文献

Litter sex ratios in the golden hamster vary with time of mating and litter size and are not binomially distributed 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Pregnancy rates, litter sizes, and litter sex ratios vary strongly with the time in the estrous cycle at which female golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are mated. Early matings tend to produce relatively high pregnancy rates, large litters, and female-biased sex ratios, while late matings tend to produce low pregnancy rates, small litters, and male-biased sex ratios. Time of mating and litter size are therefore correlated, but each appears to have an independent effect on litter sex ratio: time of mating and sex ratio are positively correlated, holding litter size constant, while litter size and sex ratio are negatively correlated, holding time of mating constant. At each litter size greater than two, the variance of litter sex ratios is less than the binomial variance expected on the hypotheses of independent sampling with a constant probability of producing a male. The main features of the distribution of litter sex ratios can be generated from a causal model in which different probabilities of producing a male apply to early and late conceptions within each litter. The relationship between litter size and mean litter sex ratio is potentially consistent with several different models for the evolution of adaptive sex-ratio variation.

Variance in male reproductive success is expected to be high in sexually dimorphic mammals, even when it is modulated by the
costs and benefits of group living. Here, we investigate the variance in reproductive success of male western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), a highly dimorphic primate with long-term male–female associations, using 12.5 years of data collected at Mbeli Bai in
northern Congo. Access to mates and offspring survival were both major sources of variance in male reproductive success. Males
with larger harems had lower offspring mortality with no apparent reduction in female fertility or observed tenure length,
so the size of harems did not seem to be limited by female feeding competition or by the risk of takeovers and infanticide
by outsider males. The lower mortality in larger harems may reflect improved vigilance against predators, and females may
cluster around males that enhance offspring survival. Thus, this study illustrates how a detailed analysis of the components
of male reproductive success can shed light on the interrelated social and ecological aspects that affect it. 相似文献

The begging of nestling birds is known to reliably signal short-term nutritional need, which is used by parents to adjust rates of food delivery and patterns of food distribution within broods. To test whether begging signals reflect more than just short-term feeding history, we experimentally created 18 "small" (4-nestling) and 18 "large" (8-nestling) broods in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca). Compared to small broods, large broods were provisioned by parents at a greater rate, but at a lower visit rate per nestling and with no obvious differences in load mass per visit. However, lower rates of food mass delivery per nestling in large broods did not result in any measurable reduction in nestling growth (i.e. "long-term need") or in any increase in the begging effort per individual nestling whilst in the nest. Mid-way through the nestling period we also used hand-feeding laboratory trials to assess in more detail individual begging behaviour and digestive performance of the three mid-ranking nestlings from each brood. More food items were required at the start of each trial to satiate nestlings from large broods, but despite this initial control for "short-term need", nestlings from large broods went on to beg at consistently higher rates and at different acoustic frequencies. Large brood nestlings also produced smaller faecal sacs, which were quantitatively different in content but did not differ in frequency. We suggest that different nutritional histories can produce cryptic changes in nestling digestive function, and that these can lead to important differences in begging signals despite controlling for short term need. 相似文献

The last two decades have seen an increasing number of studies assessing the impact of climate change upon biodiversity. A central assumption underpinning research into the potential future habitat of terrestrial biota is that species are presently in equilibrium with their environments and that quantitative climate models adequately represent the distribution of species. Recently, many alarming predictions have emerged concerning the extinction and redistribution of species. Here, we show that even large-scale models of the climatic niche dimensions of species are temporally variable. Distributional models were developed for Salix (willow) species occurring in the province of Ontario, Canada, using three historical climate data sets. Although historical data very accurately represented the distributions of willows, the inherent variability within the models of species based on different periods greatly influenced the direction and magnitude of projected distributional change. We expose a fundamental uncertainty with respect to predicting the responses of species to climate change. 相似文献

Interference is expected to occur at feeding areas between species with a similar diet, but few studies have tested this idea
for wild ungulates. We analysed interactions between fallow deer, European roe deer and wild boar, in three sites, in a Mediterranean
area. We expected that interference should be greater between deer than between them and wild boar. We documented the negative
effects of behavioural interference by fallow on foraging behaviour of roe deer, under field conditions. Deer species built
up 90% interference interactions, with fallow always dominant on roe, also through direct aggression. Although roe deer decreased
feeding and increased vigilance levels in proximity (<50 m) of either fallow deer or wild boar, they were displaced significantly
more often by the former than by the latter. Fallow deer were neither displaced nor alarmed by roe and rarely by wild boar.
No deer species displaced wild boar. Interference was significantly greater on solitary roe deer, especially females, in spring
and roe left the feeding ground most often in the smallest site (13 ha). Roe deer avoided areas where the local density of
fallow deer was the highest. During our 4-year-study, roe deer density decreased whereas fallow deer numbers increased. Behavioural
interference may explain how fallow deer outcompete roe deer through spatial exclusion from feeding sites and avoidance of
areas with high densities of the former. Fallow deer evolved in semi-arid, relatively poor habitats of Asia Minor: interspecific
defence of crucial resources could have developed as a beneficial tactic for its survival. 相似文献

Evidence that the rotifer<Emphasis Type="Italic"> Brachionus plicatilis</Emphasis> is not an osmoconformer 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is euryhaline (growing between 2 and 97 ppt) and has previously been considered an osmoconformer. We suggest that B. plicatilis is an osmoregulator, exhibiting a pattern of Na+/K+ ATPase activity in response to salinity consistent with that of other osmoregulating euryhaline invertebrates. To examine salinity tolerance, growth rates between 5 and 60 ppt were determined. The activity of Na+/K+ ATPase was examined, over the same range of salinities, by measuring ATPase activity in rotifer homogenates in the presence and absence of a Na+/K+ ATPase inhibitor. Maximum specific growth rate (0.95 day–1) occurred at 16 ppt, highest mean amictic eggs per female (1.41) occurred at 20 ppt, and both parameters decreased rapidly as salinity increased. Egg development time was constant with salinity at 0.92 days. The activity of Na+/K+ ATPase per milligram protein increased from 3.9 µmol h–1 at 5 ppt to 6.8 µmol h–1 at 50 ppt and accounted for 15 and 30% of total ATPase activity, respectively. We suggest that these observations are consistent with increasing stress at high salinities and the occurrence of a hypo-osmoregulatory response. Given the high ATP consumption of Na+/K+ ATPase at high salinities, it is possible that a proportion of the corresponding decreases in growth rate and egg production are a direct cost of regulation.Communicated by J.P. The aims of this study were to assess quantitatively the enzymatic ability of squid to digest lipids and the ability of the digestive gland to accumulate lipid classes associated with storage. This was achieved through two manipulative experiments using the dumpling squid, Euprymna tasmanica. Firstly, we measured lipase activity and determined the presence and location of lipid vacuoles within the digestive gland; secondly we identified and quantified lipid classes in the digestive gland. Given the levels of lipase activity, we provided evidence for the first time that a squid species is capable of digesting lipid at levels comparable to invertebrates known to use dietary lipid. A poor relationship between feeding activity and lipase secretion suggests that enzyme production is continuous. The second experiment found no evidence that lipid was stored in the digestive gland; most of the lipid present in the gland was either structural or a dietary by-product. The implication of these findings is that for this species lipid is most probably being immediately digested and used for growth and reproduction rather than being stored in the digestive gland. We consider that the role and storage of lipid is likely to vary among different cephalopod species, but not predictably as function of their lifestyle. Therefore, potential locations for lipid storage, other than the digestive gland, need to be considered and using changes in the relative size of the digestive gland as a measure of condition needs to be interpreted with care. 相似文献

Many bat species regularly need to find new day roosts as they require numerous shelters each breeding season. It has been
shown that bats exchange information about roosts among colony members, and use echolocation and social calls of conspecifics
in order to find roosts. However, it is unclear if wild bats discriminate between social calls of conspecifics and other bat
species while searching for roosts. Furthermore, the extent that bats are attracted to potential roosts by each of these two
call types is unknown. We present a field experiment showing that social calls of conspecifics and other bat species both
attract bats to roosts. During two summers, we played back social calls of Bechstein’s bats (Myotis bechsteinii) and Natterer’s bats (Myotis nattereri) from different bat boxes that can serve as roosts for these species. All experimental bat boxes were monitored with infrared
video to identify the approaching bat species. Three species (M. bechsteinii, M. nattereri, and Plecotus auritus) approached the boxes significantly more often during nights when bat calls were played compared to nights without playbacks.
Bechstein’s bats and Natterer’s bats were both more attracted to social calls of conspecifics than of the other species, whereas
P. auritus did not discriminate between calls of either Myotis species. Only Bechstein’s bats entered experimental boxes and only at times when calls from conspecifics were played. Our
findings show that wild bats discriminate between social calls of conspecifics and other bat species although they respond
to both call types when searching for new roosts. 相似文献

In principle, a country cannot endure negative genuine savings for long periods of time without experiencing declining consumption. Nevertheless, theoreticians envisage two alternatives to explain how an exporter of non-renewable natural resources could experience permanent negative genuine savings and still ensure sustainability. The first one alleges that the capital gains arising from the expected improvement in the terms of trade would suffice to compensate for the negative savings of the resource exporter. The second alternative points at technological change as a way to avoid economic collapse. This paper uses the data of Venezuela and Mexico to empirically test the first of these two hypotheses. The results presented here prove that the terms of trade do not suffice to compensate the depletion of oil reserves in these two open economies. 相似文献
