Cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment support a self-sustaining presettlement forest of eastern white cedar (  Thuja occidentalis L.) in which some trees are over 1000 years old. Many of the cliffs are also popular locations for recreational rock climbing. Our study employed a stratified random sampling design to assess the impact of rock climbing on populations of cliff-face and cliff-edge trees. Tree density and age structure were compared between four climbed and three unclimbed sites in the vicinity of Milton, Ontario. Signs of physical damage were also recorded for the trees sampled at each site. The results showed that living tree density on the cliff face was lower in climbed areas. The age structures of these forests showed that the numbers of older and younger age classes have been reduced on climbed cliff faces compared with unclimbed areas. A high percentage of trees on climbed cliff faces showed evidence of damage by humans. These trends were not as apparent on cliff edges where other disturbances have affected age structure. We recommend that cliff faces be explored for the presence of presettlement forest and that recreation managers of lands with exposed cliff faces incorporate rock climbing considerations into their management plans. Monitoring programs would help track levels of disturbance. Education of the climbing community would be the most effective long-term solution to limiting disturbance in sensitive areas.  相似文献

Genetic diversity measures at 54 isozyme loci coding for 16 enzymes in megagametophytes were compared between preharvest and postharvest gene pools of two adjacent virgin, old-growth (∼250 years) stands of eastern white pine ( Pinus strobus L.) in the Galloway Lake Old Pine Area of central Ontario. The concurrence of genetic diversity changes between the stands suggests that real and repeatable genetic erosion occurred in these gene pools as a result of harvesting. The total and mean number of alleles detected in each stand were reduced by approximately 25% after tree density reductions of 75%. The percentage of polymorphic loci dropped by about 33% from preharvest levels. About 40% of the low frequency (0.25> p ≥ 0.01) alleles and 80% of the rare ( p < 0.01) alleles were lost from each stand because of harvesting. Hypothetical multilocus gametic diversity was reduced by about 40% in each stand after harvesting. Latent genetic potential of each stand was reduced by about 50%, suggesting that the ability of these gene pools to adapt to changing environmental conditions may have been compromised. Heterozygosity estimates in the postharvest stands did not reflect reductions in allelic richness due to harvesting. Observed heterozygosity increased by 12% in one stand after harvesting, even though other genetic diversity measures decreased. Gene frequency changes due to harvesting imply that gene pools of naturally regenerated progeny stands may be quite different from the original parental stands. Silvicultural practices should ensure that the gene pools of remaining pristine old-growth stands have been reconstituted in the regenerating stands.  相似文献

A seasonally averaged (June–November) fate model (toxfate) of organic contaminants was used to assess the relative importance of transport, degradation and volatization processes in the Niagara River and in Lake Ontario near the river mouth. The model predicts concentrations in several compartments, including suspended sediments, water, plankton, and fish. Two contaminants were modelled, Mirex and α-hexachlorocyclohexane (Lindane). Simulations show that the largest amount of contaminants is usually in the water fraction. About 70% of Mirex is in the water at the mouth of the Niagara River, compared with 99% for Lindane. For these two contaminants, the processes of degradation and volatilization are two to three orders of magnitude slower than the rate of transport through the river and the plume. In the water, the most important process is a change of phase, from the dissolved to the adsorbed state. This change of state is mostly relevant for strongly hydrophobic compounds like Mirex, and less so for Lindane. Simulations were performed for a 40-day period during which fish concentrations did not reach equilibrium with Mirex, but they did with Lindane. Spatial distributions of these contaminants were also predicted and compared with available data.  相似文献

Abstract:  Limestone (karst) outcrops in Southeast Asia are rich in land snails. Certain groups of land snails, in particular Prosobranchia species, are restricted to limestone and show a high degree of short-range endemism. Karst habitats are, however, seriously degraded by quarrying, logging, agriculture, and burning. The effect of these disturbances on land snail fauna is unknown, so we studied paired primary and secondary forest localities on six separate limestone hills in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Land snails were sampled with a standard protocol and identified to species level. More than 16,000 individuals, belonging to 74 species, were recorded. In most sites, snail diversities did not differ between disturbed and undisturbed plots. However, pulmonate snails were significantly more abundant at disturbed localities than prosobranch snails, whereas abundances for both groups were similar at undisturbed sites. Because Prosobranchia contain many site-endemic species, our findings suggest that continued exposure to these disturbances will eventually lead to extinctions in this group.  相似文献

In the late 1960's unrest between the aggregate industry and residents of high production municipalities threatened the availability of aggregate resources. At the request of the aggregate industry, the Ontario Provincial Government examined the situation and in 1971 passed The Pits and Quarries Control Act. The intent of the Act was to regulate the operation of pits and quarries and provide for their rehabilitation.Four years later, in 1975, the inadequacies of the Act prompted the establishment of the Ontario Mineral Aggregate Working Party to examine the situation and suggest changes. Despite considerable improvements brought about by the Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, difficulties such as resource protection still existed. The Working Party was a new concept to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources because it was composed of representatives of all groups concerned with the mineral aggregate question—various government ministries, regional and municipal councillors and staff, industry and special interest groups. Secondly, the Working Party incorporated a public participation program into its policy recommendations.New legislation, to be known as The Aggregates Act, was given first reading in the Ontario Legislature on June 14, 1979 and is expected to be passed before the end of 1979. It will replace the present Pits and Quarries Control Act. Also, policy guidelines are being formulated to aid municipalities in the preparation of official plans and zoning by-laws in an effort to designate and protect mineral aggregate resources for the future.Rehabilitation of pits and quarries continues to be a high priority item, as evidenced by the research being undertaken and funded by the Province. Efforts are also continuing in resource inventory and in public education, in an effort to promote acceptance of the aggregate industry. The management of aggregate resources in Ontario has progressed substantially in the past ten years, but a sustained effort in management and control must continue.  相似文献

Abstract:  We explored the role of conservation biology in the planning of a natural-heritage system that includes long, wide conservation corridors situated primarily on private lands, and established to connect natural core areas in the Oak Ridges Moraine of Ontario, Canada. We based our review on government documents, semi-structured interviews with participants involved in this land-use planning process, and our involvement with the issue from 1990 through 2002. Conservation biology had a major influence on the outcome of the land-use planning process for this moraine. The landform was identified as an area of value by the environmental movement within the context of a number of ongoing government studies that began in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Conservation biologists and planners in government, the environmental movement, and the private sector carried out work related to conservation biology, including inventories and the development and application of criteria for the delineation of core areas and conservation corridors. Once the political timing was favorable (2001–2002), decision makers linked the science of conservation biology to planning policies and law in Ontario. The Oak Ridges Moraine land-use planning process was precedent setting in Canada, and possibly internationally. To our knowledge this is the first time long, wide conservation corridors on private lands were regulated through land-use-planning legislation and led to restrictions on urban development and aggregate resource extraction.  相似文献

Understanding the spatial–temporal distribution of vector mosquitoes is essential in designing an efficient mosquito control strategy to reduce the risk of the mosquito-borne disease. In this paper, we apply a non-parametric clustering method, CLUES, to the surveillance data of West Nile virus vector mosquitoes collected by light traps in Peel Region, Ontario, during the mosquito seasons in 2004–2010. In order to obtain robust and reliable results, a statistical smoothing procedure LOWESS is applied to the original time series data. It was found that the mosquito trap sites can be clustered into three groups. The weather impact on the mosquito abundance of each clustered group are similar, while the interannual variability and the highest abundance and peak time in each mosquito season are different. The impact of weather factors on this clustering is investigated.  相似文献

The potential environmental risk posed by metals in forest soils is typically evaluated by modeling metal mobility using soil-solution partitioning coefficients (K(d)), although such information is generally restricted to a few well-studied metals. Soil-solution partitioning coefficients were determined for 17 mineral elements (Al, As, Be, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Mg, Rb, Sr, Tl, U and V) in A-horizon (0-5 cm) soil at 46 forested sites that border the Precambrian Shield in central Ontario, where soil pH(aq) varied from 3.9 to 8.1. Sites were dominated by mature sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), white birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) or white pine (Pinus strobus L.). Log K(d) values for all elements could be predicted by empirical linear regression with soil pH (r (2) = 0.17-0.77) independent of forest type, although this relationship was greatly affected by positive relationships between acid-extractable metal concentration and pH(aq) for 13 of the 17 elements. Elements that exhibited strong or moderate (r (2)> 0.29; p < 0.001) relationships with soil pH(aq) in soil water extracts include Al, Ba, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Rb, Tl, V (negative) and Ca (positive). Elemental partitioning in mineral soil was independent of forest type; tree species differed in their response to chemical differences in mineral soil. For example, Rb, Ba, and Sr concentrations in foliage of sugar maple and white birch significantly increased with increasing soil acidity, whereas Rb, Ba, and Sr concentrations in balsam fir and white pine foliage exhibited no response to soil pH(aq). While K(d) values can provide useful information on the potential mobility and bioavailability of mineral elements in forest soils, care must be used when interpreting the relative contribution of solid and aqueous phases to this relationship and the differing responses of vegetation in elemental cycling in forests must also be considered.  相似文献

The forest vegetation simulator (FVS) model was calibrated for use in Ontario, Canada, to predict the growth of forest stands. Using data from permanent sample plots originating from different regions of Ontario, new models were derived for dbh growth rate, survival rate, stem height and species group density index for large trees and height and dbh growth rate for small trees. The dataset included black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) for the boreal region, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), white pine (Pinus strobus L.), red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region, and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) for both regions. These new models were validated against an independent dataset that consisted of permanent sample plots located in Quebec. The new models predicted biologically consistent growth patterns whereas some of the original models from the Lake States version of FVS occasionally did not. The new models also fitted the calibration (Ontario) data better than the original FVS models. The validation against independent data from Quebec showed that the new models generally had a lower prediction error than the original FVS models.  相似文献

Effects of Land Use on Bird Species Richness in Sulawesi, Indonesia   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Abstract:  There is still much debate over the potential value of land-use systems for the maintenance of tropical biodiversity. An increasing number of studies indicate that much forest biodiversity can also be found in the agricultural landscape matrix. Because there is little information on the potential value of land-use systems for tropical forest bird species, we conducted repeated point counts in near-primary forest, adjacent young secondary forest, modernized cacao agroforestry systems, and annual cultures at submontane elevations in central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Species richness decreased from natural forest and young secondary forest to agroforestry systems and annual cultures. Although species richness was similar between natural and young secondary forest, the number of endemic bird species was significantly lower in second-growth forest. Species composition gradually changed as the habitat changed from natural to secondary forest, agroforestry systems, and annual cultures. Despite close proximity to near-primary forest, the agroforestry systems studied supported only a few small frugivorous-nectarivorous species. Our results suggest that secondary forest could play an important role in the conservation of many Sulawesi bird species, but, although suitable for colonization, its potential to sustain populations over the long term is unknown. Improvement of the landscape matrix for biodiversity conservation through secondary habitats therefore seems desirable to enlarge the ranges of forest species, but the fight against land conversion within protected areas of the region should be of much higher importance, at least at present.  相似文献

Effects of grazing on grassland birds are generally thought to be indirect, through alteration of vegetation structure; however, livestock can also affect nest survival directly through trampling and other disturbances (e.g., livestock‐induced abandonment). We extracted data on nest fates from 18 grazing studies conducted in Canada. We used these data to assess rates of nest destruction by cattle among 9 ecoregions and between seasonal and rotational grazing systems. Overall, few nests were destroyed by cattle (average 1.5% of 9132 nests). Nest destruction was positively correlated with grazing pressure (i.e., stocking rate or grazing intensity), but nest survival was higher in more heavily grazed areas for some species. Because rates of destruction of grassland bird nests by cattle are low in Canada, management efforts to reduce such destruction may not be of ecological or economic value in Canada. Abstract: Marine reserves have been suggested as tools for assisting the management of fisheries by protecting vulnerable marine species from overexploitation. Although there is a theoretical basis for believing that marine reserves may serve as management tools, there are few marine reserves in the world in which to test their effectiveness. My research evaluated three forms of marine reserve on the south coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. I used northern abalone ( Haliotis kamtschatkana ), a severely depleted shellfish in this region, as an indicator of the effectiveness of the reserves. Abalone populations in eight sites receiving different degrees of spatial protection were counted and measured in situ during the spring of 1996 and 1997. In all sites with enforced harvest closures, populations of abalone were greater, and one site with nearly 40 years of protection had on average much larger (older) abalone. Reproductive output, as a function of abundance and size, was also greater in the enforced reserve areas. Larval dispersal from reserves, and hence the benefit to exploited areas, was not formally surveyed. Nevertheless, the results of my study, combined with knowledge of present abalone populations, life history, and regional hydrodynamics, suggest that establishment of reserves is justified in the absence of perfect knowledge of larval dispersal.  相似文献

Protected areas (nature reserves) cover 0.7% of the land area in southern Finland (162,000 km2), which belongs to the south- and mid-boreal coniferous forest zones. The value of these areas in preserving land birds was studied on the basis of quantitative censuses. The numbers of bird pairs were estimated in nature reserves and in the whole of southern Finland, and the significance of the reserves was evaluated based on how large a proportion of the total population in southern Finland was found in them. Forest habitat generalists and species of coniferous forests occurred in protected areas as expected by the proportion of these areas in southern Finland. Specimens of these species groups comprise two thirds of all the country's land birds. Species of old-growth forests and open peatlands clearly preferred protected areas, whereas species of bushes, and lush and deciduous forest were scarcer in protected areas than elsewhere in southern Finland. The latter fertile habitats are poorly represented in protected areas, even though due to their disappearance or alteration elsewhere several species confined to these habitats have declined and are even threatened. Drainage of open peatlands and clearcutting of old-growth forests has caused a decrease in the area of these habitats in southern Finland during the past decades. Therefore, protected areas have a high significance in preserving bird species preferring these habitats. Protected areas are particularly important for decreased species of old-growth forests, such as the Three-toed Woodpecker Picoides tridactylus and the Siberian Jay Perisoreus infaustus , as about 10% of their total population in southern Finland was estimated to breed in protected areas. The future protection of both old-growth and deciduous forests is important if we are to preserve bio-diversity of land birds in Finland.  相似文献

Effects of Timber Harvesting on Southern Appalachian Salamanders   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
We compared the species richness and abundance of salamanders on six recent clearcuts (< 10 years old) with that of salamanders on 34 mature forest stands (>50 years old) in southern Appalachian forests in western North Carolina, U.S.A. Catches of salamanders from plots in mature forest stands were about five times higher than those on recent clearcuts. Almost all species and major taxonomic groups of salamanders were adversely affected by timber removal. Mean number of species collected per plot was about twice as great in mature forest stands as in clearcuts. Analyses of stand age versus salamander catch for 47 plots indicate that 50–70 years are required for populations to return to predisturbance levels following cutting. We conservatively estimate that clearcutting in U.S. national forests in western North Carolina results in a loss of nearly 14 millton salamanders annually. It also is chronically reducing regional populations by more than a quarter of a billion salamanders (9%) below that which could be sustained if mature forests were not cut.  相似文献

Abstract: The importance of topography in evaluation of insect conservation is discussed with reference to grasshoppers in the Natal Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa For these insects, the hilltops act as thermal refugia from winter cold air drainage. Additionally, the increased insolation on the eastern and northern sides of the hilltops, compared with the western and southern sides, attracts the grasshoppers. Crevices in the hill summits provide further microrefugia Burning reduces grasshopper numbers by half and although many species are adapted to burn conditions, the reduced grass cover accentuates the thermal influences. Other animals, and plants, also selectively inhabit these hilltops, making them highly significant conservation refugia in a matrix of thermally inhospitable land. Evaluations for biological conservation should take note of the strong influence that land forms may have on plant and animal local distributions.  相似文献

为研究施用生物有机肥(EM堆肥,即有效微生物制剂 堆肥)对土壤线虫群落的影响,在中国农业大学曲周试验站进行了11 a施用EM堆肥、传统堆肥、化肥和对照处理的田间试验.结果表明:共鉴定出7目、19科、39属土壤线虫,包括15属食细菌性线虫、4属食真菌性线虫、14属植物寄生性线虫和6属杂食 - 捕食性线虫.植物寄生性线虫是优势营养类群,小杆属(Rhabditis)、螺旋属(Helicotylenchus)和盘旋属(Rotylenchus)是优势线虫属.不同施肥处理土壤线虫总数和食细菌性线虫数量为EM堆肥>传统堆肥>对照>化肥.土壤线虫可用作施肥过程中土壤质量变化的生物学指标.  相似文献

Land‐use dynamics and climatic gradients have large effects on many terrestrial systems. Exurban development, one of the fastest growing forms of land use in the United States, may affect wildlife through habitat fragmentation and building presence may alter habitat quality. We studied the effects of residential development and temperature gradients on bird species occurrence at 140 study sites in the southern Appalachian Mountains (North Carolina, U.S.A.) that varied with respect to building density and elevation. We used occupancy models to determine 36 bird species’ associations with building density, forest canopy cover, average daily mean temperature, and an interaction between building density and mean temperature. Responses varied with habitat requirement, breeding range, and migration distance. Building density and mean temperature were both included in the top occupancy models for 19 of 36 species and a building density by temperature interaction was included in models for 8 bird species. As exurban development expands in the southern Appalachians, interior forest species and Neotropical migrants are likely to decline, but shrubland or edge species are not likely to benefit. Overall, effects of building density were greater than those of forest canopy cover. Exurban development had a greater effect on birds at high elevations due to a greater abundance of sensitive forest‐interior species and Neotropical migrants. Abstract:  There is widespread agreement that biodiversity loss must be reduced, yet to alleviate threats to plant and animal species, the forces driving these losses need to be better understood. We searched for explanatory variables for threatened-species data at the country level through land-use information instead of previously used socioeconomic and demographic variables. To explain the number of threatened species in one country, we used information on land-use patterns in all neighboring countries and on the extent of the country's sea border. We carried out multiple regressions of the numbers of threatened species as a function of land-use patterns, and we tested various specifications of this function, including spatial autocorrelation. Most cross-border land-use patterns had a significant influence on the number of threatened species, and land-use patterns explained the number of threatened species better than less proximate socioeconomic variables. More specifically, our overall results showed a highly adverse influence of plantations and permanent cropland, a weaker negative influence of permanent pasture, and, for the most part, a beneficial influence of nonarable lands and natural forest. Surprisingly, built-up land also showed a conserving influence on threatened species. The adverse influences extended to distances between about 250 km (plants) and 2000 km (birds and mammals) away from where the species threat was recorded, depending on the species. Our results highlight that legislation affecting biodiversity should look beyond national boundaries.  相似文献
