Primary publications of congener numbering shorthand systems for PCB congener identification were reviewed, including the original Ballschmiter-Zell (BZ) system; recommended changes by Schulte and Malisch, and Guitart et al.; and listings by the Chemical Abstracts Service. Comparisons of the various congener numbering shorthands and chlorine substitution numberings in the structural name listings are presented. Several changes, to adhere more closely to IUPAC rules, have been incorporated into the BZ structural nomenclature, and these resulted in renumbering congeners. These corrected listings have been erroneously identified as "IUPAC" numbers, a misnomer, because IUPAC has not published a shorthand system. Guitart pointed out additional inconsistencies with IUPAC rules for nine congeners which would result in further order changes, but did not recommend renumbering, to avoid further confusion. We noted an additional error in the structural name for congener 97, named 2,2',3',4,5 using Ballschmiter and Zell nomenclature and 2,2',3,4',5' using strict IUPAC nomenclature. This renaming would cause the renumbering of the IUPAC number system reported by Guitart for isomers 91 through 98. No further changes are recommended, however. Tables summarizing each publication, and the discrepancies between them are provided in hopes of clarifying the current state of the nomenclature.  相似文献

GC retention times for 67 chlorinated monoterpenes, belonging to the technical pesticide Toxaphene have been measured under the same conditions and relative retention times have been determined. They consisted of 45 chlorinated bornanes, 13 chlorinated bornenes, 8 chlorinated dihydrocamphenes and 1 chlorinated camphene. Useful correlations between structure and retention time were found. Similar changes in structure for different compounds lead to similar changes in retention times. These correlations allow to predict retention times for yet unknown Toxaphene congeners.  相似文献

Isomer specific concentrations of individual polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) including toxic non-ortho (IUPAC 77, 126, 169), mono-ortho (105, 118, 156) and di-ortho (137, 138, 153, 180) coplanar congeners were determined in the blubber of 40 Baikal seals (Phoca sibirica) and as their fish diet collected from Lake Baikal, Siberia. Residue levels of total PCBs in Baikal seals were noticeably high and comparable to those reported for seals from the North Sea, suggesting the recent usage of this compound in the watershed of Lake Baikal. Non-, mono-, and di-ortho coplanar congeners were also detected in Baikal seals and fish. An approach to estimate bioaccumulation profiles of PCB congeners revealed that the non-ortho PCBs, IUPAC 77, 126 and 169 seemed to be less persistent than other congeners. Furthermore, selective biotransformation of PCB congeners having either meta-para vicinal H atoms or both adjacent chlorinated meta-para and ortho-meta positions has been suggested. Comparison of 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalents (TEQ) of non-, mono- and di-ortho coplanar congeners in Baikal seals with those for other marine mammals suggested higher enrichment of mono-ortho congeners, particularly IUPAC 105 and 118, which contributed significantly to the total TEQs in Baikal seals. Results imply that the TCDD-like toxicity is relatively serious in Baikal seals, because of the enrichment of these toxic PCB congeners in tissues.  相似文献

The levels of polychlorinated camphenes (toxaphenes) were investigated in liver samples from 18 glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) from Bj?rn?ya (74 degrees N, 19 degrees E) and four individuals from Longyearbyen (78 degrees N, 15 degrees E). Additionally brominated flame retardants (BFRs), PCBs and chlorinated pesticides were investigated in liver and intestinal contents of 15 of the glaucous gulls from Bj?rn?ya. Of the analysed BFRs only 2,2',4,4'-tetra- and 2,2',4,4',5-pentabrominated diphenylethers (PBDE 47 and 99) could be detected. The concentrations ranged between 2 and 25 ng/g ww. In addition, high resolution measurements with GC/HRMS revealed the existence of several, not quantified, PBDEs and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) congeners in the samples. B9-1679 and B8-1413 were the dominating toxaphenes with median concentrations of 8 and 15 ng/g ww. Concentrations of toxaphenes and PBDEs were up to 100-times lower than the concentrations of PCB and some of the pesticides. PCB and p,p/-DDE constituted 90% of the contaminants found.  相似文献

Reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organic contaminants is an effective approach to treat this widespread group of environmentally hazardous substances. Metalloporphyrins can be used to catalyze reduction reactions by shuttling electrons from a reducing agent (electron donor) to chlorinated organic contaminants, thus rendering them to non-chlorinated acetylene, ethylene or ethane as major products. Iron, nickel and vanadium oxide tetraphenyl porphyrins (TPPs) were used as models of non-soluble metalloporphyrins that are common in subsurface environments, and hence may inflect on the ability to use natural ones. The effect of cosolvents on metalloporphyrins is demonstrated to switch the reduction of tetrachlorethylene (PCE) from no reaction to complete PCE transformation within 24 h and the production of final non-chlorinated compounds. Variations in product distributions for the different metalloporphyrins indicate that changes in the core metal can influence reaction rates and effective pathways. Furthermore, different cosolvents can generate varied product distributions, again suggesting that different pathways and/or rates are operative in the reduction reactions. Comparison of different cosolvent effects on PCE reduction using vitamin B12--a soluble natural metalloporphyrinogen--as the catalyst shows less pronounced differences between reactions in various cosolvent solutions versus only aqueous solution.  相似文献

The equilibrium composition of product gases from the combustion of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHC) has been studied for varying ratios of C, H, Cl, and O under stoichiometric to fuel-rich conditions. An interactive, PC-compatible FORTRAN program, STANJAN, was utilized in conjunction with thermochemical data sources to calculate equilibrium compositions of gas mixtures as a function of temperature. The predicted results, when judiciously interpreted, assist in the understanding of the potential for formation of residual organic substance emissions (ROSEs) in post-flame environments of an incinerator. Arguments are presented for the potential formation of chlorinated species, which are stable at ambient temperature, if locally fuel-rich mixtures penetrate into the lower temperature zones of an incinerator. ROSEs that have been observed in field tests of incinerators burning chlorinated compounds are predicted to form under the fuel-rich condition. Furthermore, when the equivalence ratio is greater than unity by even a slight amount, the degree of chlorination of product gases increases markedly when the Cl/H ratio also exceeds unity. In that case, time, temperature, turbulence and an overall fuel-lean stoichiometry may not be sufficient to guarantee elimination of measurable levels of chlorinated products. Possible implications of the equilibrium calculations are discussed. Further systematic studies with additional CHCs, nitrogen-, sulfur-, and heavy metal-bearing compounds are recommended as well as continued efforts to carry out kinetic studies.  相似文献

In this study, for the first time, levels and accumulation profiles of eight currently available polybrominated/chlorinated biphenyl congeners (PXBs; XB-77, -105, -118, -126A, -126B, -126C, -156 and -169, named according to IUPAC nomenclature) in human breast milk collected form Spanish women in 2005 were reported. Concentrations and congener specific profiles of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), including co-planar PCBs, (co-PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were also reported.A concentration of 0.45 pg g−1 lipid weight was found for total PXBs, and arithmetic mean concentrations of 125, 25 and 5.5 ng g−1 lipid weight were determined for total PCBs, co-PCBs and total PBDEs respectively. Detectable levels of all congeners investigated, except CB-123 and XB-169 were found. Levels of PCBs were similar to those found in Spanish samples collected after 2000, and lower than those obtained before 2000. CB-138, -153 and -180 were the predominant PCB congeners. PBDE levels, dominated by BDE-47, -99, -100 and -209, were lower than PCB levels. PXB concentrations were the lowest, with XB-156 being the most abundant. The concentration levels of PCBs and PBDEs found in this study were in the same range as those from other European countries. Levels of PXBs were much lower than published values determined in Japan which were the only data found in the literature.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Chlorinated ethanes and ethenes are among the most frequently detected organic pollutants of water. Their physicochemical properties are such that they can contaminate aquifers for decades. In favourable conditions, they can undergo degradation. In anaerobic conditions, chlorinated solvents can undergo reductive dechlorination. DEGRADATION PATHWAYS: Abiotic dechlorination is usually slower than microbial but abiotic dechlorination is usually complete. In favourable conditions, abiotic reactions bring significant contribution to natural attenuation processes. Abiotic agents that may enhance the reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethanes and ethenes are zero-valent metals, sulphide minerals or green rusts. OXIDATION: At some sites, permanganate and Fenton's reagent can be used as remediation tool for oxidation of chlorinated ethanes and ethenes. SUMMARY: Nanoscale iron or bimetallic particles, due to high efficiency in degradation of chlorinated ethanes and ethenes, have gained much interest. They allow for rapid degradation of chlorinated ethanes and ethenes in water phase, but they also give benefit of treating dense non-aqueous phase liquid.  相似文献

A literature review of recent work involving the determination of chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (CDD) and dibenzofurans (CDF) in fish and incinerator samples has shown many irregularities and omissions in the reported data. Although some of these result from non-standardized nomenclature and reporting practices and do not affect the overall conclusions reached, in some cases omissions in reporting experimental procedures raise important concerns regarding the validity of data and make comparison of data from different investigations difficult. It is not always necessary or even desirable to report every experimental detail of work performed, however, the ultra-trace determination of CDDs and CDFs in complex environmental samples is still at a stage where omission of key experimental details can affect the interpretation of results.  相似文献

Isomer-specific accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) including di-, mono- and non-ortho congeners and hepatic P-450 activities were determined in adult common cormorants from Lake Biwa, Japan. The mean total PCB levels in male and female birds were 7.2 +/- 6.1 and 2.1 +/- 0.74 microg g(-1) wet wt, respectively, in the liver. The highly biomagnified congeners were IUPAC 126, 153, 169, 180 and 194, whereas a higher degree of biotransformation could be observed in both meta-para chlorine unsubstituted congeners in the cormorant liver. The estimated metabolic index also showed that common cormorants had higher PB-type enzyme activities than some avian and marine mammals but poor MC-type enzyme activities. The concentrations of non-ortho coplanar congeners were in the order of IUPAC 126 > IUPAC 169 > IUPAC 77 with mean values 6.1 +/- 5.9, 1.3 +/- 1.4 and 0.43 +/- 0.26 ng g(-1) wet wt, respectively. The calculated mean 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentration in cormorants was 1.8 +/- 1.7 ng g(-1) wet wt and was dominated by IUPAC 118, followed by IUPAC 126. A significant increase of ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and pentoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (PROD) activities was observed with estimated TEQ of PCBs in the cormorants, suggesting that the current contamination level is sufficient for altering their biochemical responses.  相似文献

Large-scale contaminated sites with multiple contaminants in the groundwater present a challenge to risk assessment and remediation. Attenuation reactions take place in the subsurface and act to contain contaminants, but must be thoroughly investigated on a site-specific basis. Field data from monitoring wells at a contaminated industrial site in Bitterfeld, Germany, are presented and analyzed for evidence of the prevalent biodegradation reactions. The groundwater in the Tertiary aquifer is contaminated with large quantities of chlorinated aliphatic compounds, in addition to chlorobenzenes and BTEX. In this strictly anaerobic environment, geochemical indications for several microbial processes were found, including methanogenesis, sulfate and iron reduction as well as reductive dechlorination of the chlorinated hydrocarbons. Direct evidence for the latter degradation reaction was observed along the flowpath due to the appearance of intermediates and an increase in the degree of dechlorination.  相似文献

The formation pathways for chlorinated aliphatic and chlorinated aromatic compounds in technical incineration processes are reviewed. It is shown that acetylene is converted to chloroaromatic compounds including PCDD/F in a special flow reactor by catalytic activity of CuCl2 in the temperature regime of a post-combustion zone of technical incinerators. Mechanistic pathways begin with chlorination of acetylene. Dichloroacetylene is further condensed to C-4 and C-6 units. Hexachlorobenzene is the dominant aromatic compound and a likely precursor to chlorinated phenols and PCDD/F. Two specific mechanisms of formation of chlorinated aromatic compounds including PCDD/F have been advanced. Both mechanisms begin with the formation of dichloroacetylene from flame pyrolysis products like acetylene. Condensation of dichloroacetylene is mediated by copper species via metallacyclic intermediates and/or a catalytic cycle involving copper stabilized trichlorovinyl radicals. The final pathways of conversion of chlorinated benzenes to PCDD/F via chlorophenols are under active investigation.  相似文献

This study was performed to investigate the possible enantioselective metabolism of the four chlorinated bornanes: #26, #32, #50 and #62 (according to the Parlar nomenclature) by rats. Rats were exposed to a mixture of these toxaphenes by a single intravenous injection. Enantiomer ratios (ER) as well as the enantiomer fractions (EF) were determined in brain, adipose tissue and liver samples at six time intervals by high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC) coupled to negative ion chemical ionization (NICI) mass spectrometry (MS). Capillaries coated with heptakis-(2,3,6-O-tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-beta-cyclodextrin (TBDMS-CD) or octakis-(2,3,6-tri-O-ethyl)-gamma-cyclodextrin (TEG-CD) were used for the enantioselective separations. Significant time-dependent changes of ER and EF were found in all the three tissues for #26, #50 and #62. Greatest deviations from racemic composition were found in the liver, which is known to be the major metabolizing organ for toxaphenes. #32 was metabolized the fastest, but showed no changes in ER. Brief information is also included about the possible reasons for the different behaviors of the four congeners in the studied tissues.  相似文献

Natural attenuation assessment data, collected at a Superfund site located in Louisiana, USA, are presented. The study site is contaminated with large quantities of DNAPL waste products. Source characterization data indicated that chlorinated ethene and ethane compounds are the major contaminants of concern. This case study illustrates the steps involved in implementing the U.S. EPA's [U.S. EPA, 1998. Technical protocol for evaluating natural attenuation of chlorinated solvents in ground water, by Wiedmeier, T.H., Swnason, M.A., Moutoux, D.E., Gordon, E.K., Wilson, J.T., Wilson, B.H., Kampbell, D.H., Hass, P.E., Miller, R.N., Hansen, J. E., Chapelle, F.H., Office of Research and Development, EPA/600/R-98/128] monitored natural attenuation (MNA) screening protocol at this chlorinated solvent site. In the first stage of the MNA assessment process, the field data collected from four monitoring wells located in different parts of the plume were used to complete a biodegradation scoring analysis recommended by the protocol. The analysis indicates that the site has the potential for natural attenuation. In the second stage, a detailed conceptual model was developed to identify various contaminant transport pathways and exposure points. The U.S. EPA model and BIOCHLOR was used to assess whether the contaminants are attenuating at a reasonable rate along these transport paths so that MNA can be considered as a feasible remedial option for the site. The site data along with the modeling results indicate that the chlorinated ethene and chlorinated ethane plumes are degrading and will attenuate within 1000 ft down gradient from the source, well before reaching the identified exposure point Therefore, MNA can be considered as one of the feasible remediation options for the site.  相似文献

The production of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) has drawn increasing global concern, especially because the high bromine (Br) content (5-15%) places obstacles in the way of simple disposal techniques. Microwave-induced pyrolysis of WPCBs provides a promising way to dispose of these hazardous and resource-filled wastes. The transference rules for Br during microwave-induced pyrolysis have been investigated experimentally. It was found that the microwave energy could be used more efficiently to accelerate the heating rate and improve the final pyrolysis temperature by adding some activated carbon (AC) as microwave absorbents. The high temperature and rapid pyrolysis process promoted the yields of gaseous products and the decomposition of brominated compounds into hydrogen bromide and then benefited the capture of Br and the debromination of byproducts. The application of a calcium carbonate (CaCO3) layer overhead led to over 95% debromination of the liquid products and over 50% capture of the total Br. It can be concluded that the presented method is suitable for the control of Br transference in the recycling of WPCBs. This method can also be extended to the disposal of the electronic scraps.  相似文献

A limited amount of information exists regarding the relationship between the chemical form of copper and the formation of chlorinated aromatics in fly ash. To understand the effects of the various forms of copper on the formation of chlorinated aromatics in real fly ash, we determined the chemical forms of copper present in various types of real fly ash using X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and evaluated the relationship between the chemical forms of copper and the formation of chlorinated aromatics. Copper chloride hydroxide (CuCl2 x 3Cu(OH)2) and cuprous chloride (CuCl) were the predominant copper species found in real fly ash. Although pure cupric chloride (CuCl2) is known to be the most active catalyst for the formation of chlorinated aromatics under experimental conditions with synthetic fly ash, CuCl2 was not found in every real fly ash sample. The amount of copper chloride hydroxide was positively correlated with the formation of chlorinated aromatics in real fly ash and is, consequently, considered to be one of the key species involved in the formation of chlorinated aromatics.  相似文献

Forensic analyses of chlorinated hydrocarbon plumes typically entail reviews of site records, flow and transport modeling, and analysis of indicator compounds to gain insights into the behavior of a contaminant plume in the subsurface. Such approaches are directed toward unraveling the specific circumstances associated with the disposal history and hydrogeology of a site. A complimentary approach is to compare the behavior of a particular plume with a population of plumes from other sites that may be influenced by similar mechanisms (e.g. transformation processes such as reductive dehalogenation). In other words, hypotheses pertaining to plume behavior can be tested against a knowledge base of what is typical behavior and what is not. To address this proposed methodology, three example applications of statistical techniques to a multi-site data set are presented to provide background for problems that may be pertinent to forensic analyses. These examples include measuring the frequency of association between selected chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds, assessing the effects of transformation processes on temporal concentration trends in populations of groundwater monitoring wells, and dating plumes, in a relative sense, by concentration correlation analyses. In each case, the results of the statistical analyses are consistent with expectation, indicating that meaningful trends in chlorinated hydrocarbon plume behavior may be discerned from a diverse multi-site data set.  相似文献

In this paper, a numerical model is presented that is capable of describing the complex set of biochemical processes that occur in chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon (CAH)-contaminated groundwater when an exogenous electron donor is added. The reactive pattern is based on the degradation pathways of both chlorinated ethanes and ethenes, and it includes electron donor production (H2 and acetate) from the fermentation of an organic substrate as well as rate-limiting processes related to electron acceptor competition. Coupling of the kinetic model to a convection–dispersion module is described. The calibration phase was carried out using data obtained at a real CAH-contaminated site in the north of Italy. Model simulations of different application scenarios are presented to draw general conclusions on the effectiveness of reductive dechlorination (RD) as a possible cleanup strategy. Early outcomes indicate that cleanup targets can only be achieved if source longevity is reduced. Therefore, metabolic RD is expected to produce beneficial effects because it is known to induce bioenhanced degradation and transformation of CAHs.  相似文献
