Mercury levels were determined in the tissues and organs (lung, liver, kidney, skin, muscle, bone) of five toothed-whales stranded along the Corsican coast between November 1993 and February 1996. The species taken into consideration were the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus, the common dolphin Delphinus delphis, the striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba, the pilot whale Globicephala melas and the Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus. The variation in mercury levels between the different tissues and organs (lung, liver, kidney, skin, muscle, bone) of the cetacean species are discussed as regards storage, biotransformation and elimination. In all cases, the liver appears to be the preferential organ for mercury accumulation (with concentrations as high as 4250 microg Hg/g dw and 3298 microg Hg/g in the livers of Tursiops truncatus and Grampus griseus, respectively). The kidney and lung are the next organs in terms of mercury uptake followed by the muscle, bone and skin. The stomach contents of Grampus griseus and D. delphis were determined and consisted of cephalopods for Grampus griseus, and of sardines Sardina pilchardus and mackerels Trachurus sp. for D. delphis. Cephalopods had higher mercury concentrations (25.4 microg Hg/g dw) than fish (ca 1 microg Hg/g). These contents represent only one meal and mercury levels found in livers may integrate mercury uptake having occurred during the whole life span of animals.  相似文献

The environmental distribution of mercury and other trace elements in the geothermal area of Bagnore (Mt. Amiata, central Italy) and its surroundings was evaluated by means of lichens used as bioaccumulators. Adopting a 'before-after' strategy, the impact of a recently built power plant was also evaluated. Four sites were sampled: (1) S. Fiora, a town 2 km SE of Bagnore; (2) Bagnore, a village where geothermal power is generated; (3) Aiole, a locality 1.5 km NW of Bagnore with an abandoned Hg smelting plant and a waste pile of roasted cinnabar; (4) Arcidosso, a town 3.5 km NW of Bagnore. At S. Fiora and Arcidosso, where most of the population is concentrated, mercury levels in lichens were within the background range (0.1-0.2 microg/g dw). On the contrary, at Aiole, Hg concentrations (0.63-0.67 microg/g dw) were much higher than background. After the new geothermal power plant went into operation at Bagnore, lichen concentrations of Hg showed a 50% increase from 0.22 to 0.32 microg/g dw. This value, however, is in line with those found in lichens from natural areas with hot springs and fumaroles.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal distribution of methylmercury (MeHg) was determined in surficial sediments collected from a river-reservoir system impacted by Hg-contaminated mine wastes. Despite the fact that total mercury concentrations (HgT) in surface sediments of the Carson River system were in the microg.g(-1) range, levels of MeHg varied from about 2 to 28 ngHg.g(-1) dry weight, representing less than 3% of Hg(T). Concentrations of MeHg were well correlated with both the biotic (r=0.95) and abiotic activity (r=0.85) of the sediment, determined as the ability of each compartment to specifically reduce an alternative electron acceptor. However, the positive relationship between the two measured activities suggests that the abiotic activity may be due to reductant substances produced by micro-organisms. When sediments collected from the Carson River were used in laboratory assays for the determination of potential rates of MeHg production, the addition of inorganic Hg (added as HgCl2) resulted in increased rates of methylation when the spike concentration was lower or equal to 15.3 microg.g(-1) dry weight. This trend was reversed for spike concentration of inorganic Hg above 15.3 microg.g(-1). The reduction of methylation rate was associated with an inhibition of microbial activity. These observations suggest that seasonal inputs into the river of significant amounts of inorganic Hg eroded from mill tailings during winter and spring flooding events could have an inhibiting effect on Hg-methylating micro-organisms. This observation could explain the low [MeHg]/[HgT] ratios previously documented in waters of the Carson River system.  相似文献

Specific accumulation of mercury and selenium in seabirds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Total mercury (T-Hg), methyl mercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) concentrations were determined to elucidate the relationship between Hg and Se levels in the liver of 10 seabird species. Highest concentrations of T-Hg (mean 267 microg/g dry wt), MeHg (mean 25.5 microg/g dry wt) and Se (mean 113 microg/g dry wt) were in the liver of black-footed albatross (Diomedea nigripes). An equivalent molar ratio of 1:1 between T-Hg and Se was found in the liver of individuals which contain over 100 microg Hg/g. However, such a relationship was unclear in other individuals which had relatively low Hg levels. This suggests that Se plays a role in Hg detoxification for those individuals with high Hg. In seabird tissues, Hg and Se levels should be a most important factor determining the relationship between Hg and Se, and fluctuation of Hg burden through molting and the species-specific demethylation capacity would also influence their relationships.  相似文献

The mining of gold can lead to toxic metals such as mercury (Hg) contaminating watercourses as by-products. The Reedy Creek sub-catchment, in northeast Victoria, Australia, was mined for gold in the 1850s. In 1998, samples were taken from six watercourses to measure any remaining toxic metal contamination in sediments and surface waters from two creeks with no previous gold mining (controls) and four that were mined. Although mean concentrations of Hg (measured using an ICP-OES) in sediments were below worldwide background levels, individual sites along Reedy Creek had slightly elevated Hg concentrations. In contrast, the Hg concentrations in the surface waters were above background levels. Temporal fluxes of very high Hg concentrations in the surface waters during periods of first flow and flood events revealed that Hg concentrations in the surface waters may, at certain times of the year, exceed all Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (National Water Quality Management Strategy. Australian Water Quality Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Waters, ANZECC, 2000) guidelines for water use and the protection of the aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献

This study reports the elemental uptake by Plocamium corallorhiza, a Rhodophyta class of coralline alga grown richly along KwaZulu-Natal coastline. The uptake of seven important elements, namely Fe, Mn, As, B, Ti, Zn and Hg, selected based on their abundance in the samples, were investigated for a one-year cycle, from June 2002 to May 2003, at four chosen sites located along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. The sites spread over 150 km from North to South Coast are Zinkwasi, Ballito, Treasure Beach and Park Rynie. P. corallorhiza possess good manganese and arsenic-accumulating ability and has potential to be an excellent indicator for most of the metals studied. A typical P. corallorhiza sample at Park Rynie (winter) recorded Mn (14 ppm), Fe (6.02 ppm), As (8.4 ppm), B (1580 ppb), Zn (234 ppb), Ti (751 ppb) and Hg (15.8 ppb). The general trend found at all sites was a large decrease in iron concentration in spring and summer and increase in winter. Mercury uptake was lowest in winter and autumn at all sites. The highest mercury levels in the seaweeds were recorded during spring or summer.  相似文献

Hemolymph sodium, potassium and calcium concentrations were determined in crayfish (Orconectes propinquus) exposed to (203)HgCl(2) mixed with food to a concentration of 1 microg Hg g(-1). Dummy-fed animals were exposed to Hg-dosed food wrapped in dialysis tubing to control for mercury reaching the animals via leaching from food to water. Hemolymph analyses were made following 14-day Hg exposures and again after a further 21-day 'depuration' period during which all animals were fed Hg-free food. After 14 days, the mercury reached a concentration of 0.175 microg g(-1) in the hepatopancreas and approximately half this level in the gills of Hg-fed animals. No depuration occurred from the hepatopancreas although the gills lost approximately two-thirds of their labelled mercury during the depuration period. Hemolymph sodium concentrations in Hg-exposed crayfish, both fed and dummy-fed, after 14 days were significantly lower than in Hg-free controls and remained low following the 21-day depuration period. Hemolymph calcium concentrations were lower in Hg-fed animals than in dummy-fed and control animals after 14 days although calcium levels rose in all treatments after 35 days. This may have been due to the incidence of pre-molt animals in all experimental groups, although the relationship between this and mercury exposure was not established unequivocally. Hemolymph potassium levels showed no differences between treatments.  相似文献

Liver samples of 22 Dall's porpoises (Phocoenoides dalli) collected off the Sanriku coast of Japan were analyzed for investigation on bioaccumulation of total mercury (SigmaHg), organic mercury (OrgHg), inorganic mercury (InHg) and selenium (Se). In the liver, detoxification of Hg was evident by transformation of OrgHg. Se showed different Hg detoxification patterns in the liver with a threshold range of hepatic SigmaHg concentration of about 20-30 microg/g dry weight. The molar ratios of Se/InHg or Se/SigmaHg were obviously higher than 1 when hepatic SigmaHg levels were less than the range, while both ratios were close to 1 when SigmaHg levels were higher than the threshold, suggesting a mechanism by detoxification of OrgHg into less toxic mercuric selenide (HgSe) forms in the latter.  相似文献

High concentration of mercury (Hg) in hair has been reported for Cambodians. To confirm the Hg contamination occurring through intake, Hg concentrations were determined in both hair and blood of residents (n=20) from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Mercury concentrations in the hair and blood were 0.69-190microg g(-1) dry wt and 5.2-58microg l(-1), respectively, which were lower than those from Hg contaminated or high fish intake regions, but were higher than those from non-contaminated regions. Some female subjects had hair and blood Hg levels exceeding the threshold values for neurotoxic effects. Interestingly, serum estrone and estradiol levels were positively correlated with blood Hg level for both males and females, indicating possible induction of female hormones by Hg exposure in Cambodians.  相似文献

This paper presents a modeling analysis of airborne mercury (Hg) deposited on the Ochlockonee River watershed located in Georgia. Atmospheric deposition monitoring and source attribution data were used along with simulation models to calculate Hg buildup in the subwatershed soils, its subsequent runoff loading and delivery through the tributaries, and its ultimate fate in the mainstem river. The terrestrial model calculated annual watershed yields for total Hg ranging from 0.7 to 1.1 microg/m2. Results suggest that approximately two-thirds of the atmospherically deposited Hg to the watershed is returned to the atmosphere, 10% is delivered to the river, and the rest is retained in the watershed. A check of the aquatic model results against survey data showed a reasonable agreement. Comparing observed and simulated total and methylmercury concentrations gave root mean square error values of 0.26 and 0.10 ng/L, respectively, in the water column, and 5.9 and 1 ng/g, respectively, in the upper sediment layer. Sensitivity analysis results imply that mercury in the Ochlockonee River is dominated by watershed runoff inputs and not by direct atmospheric deposition, and that methylmercury concentrations in the river are determined mainly by net methylation rates in the watershed, presumably in wetted soils and in the wetlands feeding the river.  相似文献

Since the 19th century, large amounts of industrial waste were dumped in a reservoir adjacent to a chlor-alkali plant in the lower Ebro River (NE Spain). Previous toxicological analysis of carp populations inhabiting the surveyed area have shown that the highest biological impact attributable to mercury pollution occurred downstream of the discharge site. However, mercury speciation in fish from this polluted area has not been addressed yet. Thus, in the present study, piscivorous European catfish (Silurus glanis) and non-piscivorous common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were selected, to investigate the bioavailability and bioaccumulation capacities of both total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) at the discharge site and downstream points. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was applied to reduce the dimensionality of the data set, and Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) models were fitted in order to assess the relationship between both Hg species in fish and different variables of interest. Mercury levels in fish inhabiting the dam at the discharge site were found to be approximately 2-fold higher than those from an upstream site; while mercury pollution progressively increased downstream of the hot spot. In fact, both THg and MeHg levels at the farthest downstream point were 3 times greater than those close to the waste dump. This result clearly indicates downstream transport and increased mercury bioavailability as a function of distance downstream from the contamination source. A number of factors may affect both the downstream transport and increased Hg bioavailability associated with suspended particulate matter (SPM) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC).  相似文献

Total mercury concentrations were measured in dorsal muscle tissue of two edible fish species, Prochilodus scrofa 'curimba' and Pseudoplatystoma corruscans 'pintado', respectively detritivorous and carnivorous. Fish species were sampled monthly between February 1993 and January 1994 and bimonthly between April 1994 and February 1995 in three subsystems of Paraná river' system (Ivinhema River/Lake Patos; Baía River/Lake Guaraná and Paraná River/Cortado Channel), between Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. Total mercury was determined by HNO3/H2SO4/V2O5 digestion, SnCl2 reduction, and vapour generation method analysis (CGCH 900), adapted to Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (CGAA 7000 ABC). The mean mercury concentrations varied from 82.0 to 310.5 ng g(-1) and from 68 to 294.4 ng g(-1) in 'curimbas' and 'pintados', respectively. Mercury level increases in sexually mature 'curimbas'. Mercury values detected do not exceed the prevailing criteria for issuance of fish consumption advisories (< 500 ng g(-1)).  相似文献

Using the well-known Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (RAMS) version 4.3 an integrated system able to simulate the atmospheric mercury cycle has been developed. Basic processes of the mercury atmospheric cycle have been incorporated into the atmospheric model. The model deals with elemental Hg (Hg0), divalent gaseous Hg (Hg2) and particulate Hg (HgP). Wet deposition mechanisms used to describe the removal of Hg2 and HgP are merged with the detailed cloud microphysical scheme in order to provide better representation of the wet deposition processes. The advantages of this approach have been examined through results intercomparison with simulated Hg wet deposition using CMAQ-Hg from previous work for two evaluation periods: 4 April–2 May 1995, and 20 June–18 July 1995. An attempt to clarify the main parameters that affect wet deposition mechanism of mercury is also made.  相似文献

The sorption of Hg (II) onto four different types of Amazon soils from the A-horizon was investigated by means of column experiments under saturation conditions and controlled metal load. Higher organic matter contents in the soil resulted in higher Hg (II) adsorptions, reaching values as high as 3.8 mg Hg g−1 soil. The amount of mercury adsorbed on a soil column (Q) shows a very poor correlation with soil clay content (r2 = 0.2527), indicating that Hg sorption in these topsoil samples is chiefly governed by the organic matter content. Desorption experiments using Negro River (Amazon) waters were conducted using soil saturated with Hg (II) in order to better understand the metal leaching mechanism. The amount of Hg (II) released from soils was around 30% of the total sorbed mercury upon saturation, suggesting that mercury sorption in the soils present in the catchment area of the Negro River basin is not a reversible process.  相似文献

Concentrations of trace elements (Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe, and Se) in different organs and tissues (liver, kidney, muscle tissue, spleen, heart, lung, and fat tissue) of loggerhead turtles Caretta caretta from eastern Mediterranean Sea were determined. The highest levels of mercury and cadmium were found in liver (Hg: 0.43 microg g(-1) wet weight; Cd: 3.36 microg g(-1) wet weight) and kidney (Hg: 0.16 microg g(-1) wet weight; Cd: 8.35 microg g(-1) wet weight). For lead the overall concentrations were low and often below the limit of detection. Copper and selenium tended to be higher in liver than in other tissues and organs, while for zinc the concentrations were quite homogenous in the different organs and tissues, except fat tissue (64.7 microg g(-1) wet weight) which showed a higher accumulation of this element. For iron the greatest concentrations were observed in liver (409 microg g(-1) wet weight) and spleen (221 microg g(-1) wet weight).  相似文献

At Mt. Amiata (Italy) geothermal energy is used, since 1969, to generate electricity in five plants with a nominal capacity of 88 MW. Anomalous levels of mercury characterise geothermal fluids of Mt. Amiata, an area renowned for its vast cinnabar deposits and for the mercury production carried out in the past. Mercury emission rates range from 300 to 400 g/h, or 3-4 g/h per MW electrical installed capacity. These emissions are coupled with a release of 7-8 kg/(h MW) of hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Mercury is discharged as Hg0 gaseous species and reaches the atmosphere with the non-condensable gas fraction. In this fraction, CO, is the major component (94-98%), H2S is around 1% and mercury concentration is as high as 1-10 mg/Nm3. Leaves of a spontaneous grass (Avena sterilis), at the end of the vegetative cycle, were used as mercury bioconcentrators to map deposition near geothermal power plants and to calculate the corresponding average levels of Hg0 in the air. Direct measurements of mercury and hydrogen sulphide vapours in the air reached by power plant emissions showed a ratio of about 1-2000. This ratio was applied to calculate average levels of hydrogen sulphide starting from mercury deposition mapping: typical concentrations of mercury and hydrogen sulphide were of the order of 10-20 ng/m3 and 20-40 microg/m3, respectively.  相似文献

Toothed-whales and dolphins have been hunted for human consumption in Japan, and their muscles (red meats) are highly contaminated with mercury (Hg). We investigated the distribution and toxicity of Hg in rats after oral administration of Hg-contaminated whale red meat marketed for human consumption in Japan. Rats were orally administered the red meat homogenate for seven consecutive days (0.5 g red meat/kg-bw/day). The red meat administered to rats contained 81microg/g of total mercury (T-Hg) and 13.4 microg/g of methyl mercury (M-Hg). This dose corresponds to the human consumption of 210 g red meat/60 kg-bw/week, exceeding by about 29 times the provisional tolerable weekly intake of M-Hg at 1.6 microg/kg-bw/week set by JECFA [JECFA, 2003. Joint FAO/WHO expert committee on food additives. 61st meeting, Rome]. Twenty-four hours after the last administration, the distribution of T-Hg in rat organs and biochemical parameters in serum were analyzed. The administration of red meat significantly elevated T-Hg concentrations in the liver, kidney, erythrocytes, cerebral cortex and medulla oblongata from the control levels but did not elevate the T-Hg concentration in serum, showing the typical distribution pattern of M-Hg, not of inorganic Hg. The administration slightly but significantly increased GTP activity and P concentration and decreased BUN concentration in serum, although no abnormalities were observed in rat body weight gain and movement during the 7 days. The occasional consumption of red meat from small cetaceans, therefore, could pose a health problem for not only pregnant women but also for the general population.  相似文献

Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) concentrations on liver and kidney of Sotalia fluviatilis (Cetacea: Delphinidae) stranded in the coast of Ceará, Brazil, were studied from 1996 to 1999. Pb levels were usually lower than the detection limit (0.1 microg/g). Concentrations of Cd were significantly higher in kidney than liver, averaging 0.8 microg/g. Mercury accumulation took place mainly in liver with an average concentration of 4.6 microg/g. Both metals were significantly higher in larger mature individuals, but differences between sexes were not significant. The detection of Cd, Hg and Pb in tissue samples of S. fluviatilis off the coast of Ceará indicated that heavy metals are locally available in the water, and bioaccumulation may be occurring through the food web. Contamination levels were not considered critical, but could be related to Ceará's growing industrial development. The associated risks of pollution outfalls may pose a threat to marine organisms in a near future, especially for top predators such as S. fluviatilis.  相似文献

Mercury presents a potential risk to the environment and humans, especially in its methylated form. It is among the highest priority environmental pollutants. River Idrijca (Slovenia) is highly contaminated with mercury due to past mercury mining. The aim of this work was to investigate whether the periphyton community in rivers such as Idrijca is a suitable indicator of Hg pollution and of changes in mercury methylation and could serve as an early warning system of increased input of MeHg in the food chain. Periphyton is the only site of primary production in temperate torrential rivers such as Idrijca and is therefore an important link in the food chain. It is also a potential site of Hg accumulation and its introduction to higher trophic levels. Our aim was to assess the response of the periphyton to seasonal and spatial variations in mercury levels and to evaluate its potential as an early warning system of changes in mercury reactivity and mobilization The results indicate that periphyton in a torrential river is too complex and unpredictable to be used as a sole indicator of mercury concentrations and changes in the river. Nevertheless, it can complement environmental measurements due to its importance in the riverine food web.  相似文献
