The behavior and fate of triasulfuron (TRS) in water and soil systems were examined in laboratory studies. The degradation of TRS in both buffer solution and soil was highly pH-sensitive. The rate of degradation could be described with a pseudo first-order kinetic and was much faster at pH 4 than at pH 7 and 9. Aqueous hydrolysis occurred by cleavage of the sulfonylurea bridge to form 2-(2-chloroethoxy) benzenesulfonamide (CBSA) and [(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino] (AMMT). AMMT was unstable in aqueous solutions in any pH condition but it degraded more quickly at pH 4 and 9. CBSA did not degrade in aqueous solutions or in enriched cultures but it underwent a quick degradation in the soil. The rates of TRS degradation in sterile and non-sterile soils were similar, suggesting that microorganisms played a minimal role in the breakdown process. This hypothesis is supported by the results of studies on the degradation of TRS by enriched cultures during which the molecule underwent a prevalently chemical degradation.  相似文献

This paper describes work performed on the sampling and analysis of non-condensable gases (NCG) emitted from diffuse sources of a Portuguese Kraft pulp mill, which is the background information for a NCG collection, treatment and disposal system. The variability found in the composition of the gaseous compounds showed the existence of gaseous streams other than typical total reduced sulphur (TRS) compounds as usually described. From the measured TRS concentrations and the gas flow rate from each source it was possible to calculate the emission flow rate, E, of each source. These emission flow rates were then divided into three categories which are quite useful to identify significant sources and to choose abatement techniques. The methodology presented allows for a precise quantification of sources so that similar emissions can be grouped for treatment purposes. Sources with an emission flow rate bigger than 1 kg/h have a marked effect on the overall TRS emissions of the mill, as they are major contributors. It was also found that a new analytical procedure using Restek columns is more easy to use and overcomes operational problems noticed previously, namely a run time of 20-25 min instead of 50-60 min.  相似文献

Health risks from air pollutants are evaluated by comparing chronic (i.e., an average over 1 yr or greater) or acute (typically 1-hr) exposure estimates with chemical- and duration-specific reference values or standards. When estimating long-term pollutant concentrations via exposure modeling, facility-level annual average emission rates are readily available as model inputs for most air pollutants. In contrast, there are far fewer facility-level hour-by-hour emission rates available for many of these same pollutants. In this report, we first analyze hour-by-hour emission rates for total reduced sulfur (TRS) compounds from eight kraft pulp mill operations. This data set is used to demonstrate discrepancies between estimating exposure based on a single TRS emission rate that has been calculated as the mean of all operating hours of the year, as opposed to reported hourly emission rates. A similar analysis is then performed using reported hourly emission rates for sulfur dioxide (SO2) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from three power generating units from a U.S. power plant. Results demonstrate greater variability at kraft pulp mill operations, with ratios of reported hourly to average hourly TRS emissions ranging from less than 1 to greater than 160 during routine facility operations. Thus, if fluctuations in hourly emission rates are not accounted for, over- or underestimates of hourly exposure, and thus acute health risk, may occur. In addition to this analysis, we also demonstrate an additional challenge when assessing health risk based on hourly exposures: the lack of human health reference values based on 1-hr exposures.

Implications: Largely due to the lack of reported hourly emission rate data for many air pollutants, an hourly average emission rate (calculated from an annual emission rate) is often used when modeling the potential for acute health risk. We calculated ratios between reported hourly and hourly average emission rates from pulp and paper mills and a U.S. power plant to demonstrate that if not considered, hourly fluctuations in emissions could result in an over- or underestimation of exposure and risk. We also demonstrate the lack of 1-hr human health reference values meant to be protective of the general population, including children.  相似文献

Previous analyses of continuously measured compounds in Fort McKay, an indigenous community in the Athabasca Oil Sands, have detected increasing concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and total hydrocarbons (THC), but not of sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), total reduced sulfur compounds (TRS), or particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm; PM2.5). Yet the community frequently experiences odors, dust, and reduced air quality. The authors used Fort McKay’s continuously monitored air quality data (1998–2014) as a case study to assess techniques for air quality analysis that make no assumptions regarding type of change. Linear trend analysis detected increasing concentrations of higher percentiles of NO2, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and THC. However, comparisons of all compounds between an early industrial expansion period (1998–2001) and current day (2011–2014) show that concentrations of NO2, SO2, THC, TRS, and PM2.5 have significantly increased, whereas concentrations of O3 are significantly lower. An assessment of the frequency and duration of periods when concentrations of each compound were above a variety of thresholds indicated that the frequency of air quality events is increasing for NO2 and THC. Assessment of change over time with odds ratios of the 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentile concentrations for each compound compared with an estimate of natural background variability showed that concentrations of TRS, SO2, and THC are dynamic, higher than background, and changes are nonlinear and nonmonotonic. An assessment of concentrations as a function of wind direction showed a clear and generally increasing influence of industry on air quality. This work shows that evaluating air quality without assumptions of linearity reveals dynamic changes in air quality in Fort McKay, and that it is increasingly being affected by oil sands operations.

Implications: Understanding the nature and types of air quality changes occurring in a community or region is essential for the development of appropriate air quality management policies. Time-series trending of air quality data is a common tool for assessing air quality changes and is often used to assess the effectiveness of current emission management programs. The use of this tool, in the context of oil sands development, has significant limitations, and alternate air quality change analysis approaches need to be applied to ensure that the impact of this development on air quality is fully understood so that appropriate emission management actions can be taken.  相似文献

This paper evaluates approaches to calculate acceptable loads for metal deposition to forest ecosystems, distinguishing between critical loads, stand-still loads and target loads. We also evaluated the influence of including the biochemical metal cycle on the calculated loads. Differences are illustrated by examples of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn for a deciduous forest on five major soil types in the Netherlands. Stand-still loads are generally lower than critical loads, which in turn are lower than the target loads indicating that present levels are below critical levels. Uncertainties in the calculated critical loads are mainly determined by the uncertainty in the critical limits and the chemical speciation model. Including the metal cycle has a small effect on the calculated critical loads. Results are discussed in view of the applicability of the critical load concept for metals in future protocols on the reduction in metal emissions.  相似文献

A significant problem for effect assessment of aquatic ecosystems arises from the large ranges of toxicity data, which can be found in different databases and literature. Here, ranges are given for the aquatic toxicity of 27 high production volume chemicals. Based on these illustrative examples and on the current literature on uncertainty in aquatic effect assessment, toxicity ranges are discussed for their possible causes (variation in experimental condition, species, endpoint, time) and ways to handle them (safety factors). Implications and recommendations on the procedure of risk analysis of chemical substances are drawn. Two main requirements for a comprehensive risk assessment are identified, which often play a minor role in current practice (as they are often neglected) as well as in scientific discussion (as they are meant to be trivial). First, data quality must be checked critically before applying any result of a toxicity test. Secondly, experimental data should take into account different species and acute as well as chronic data. If these aspects are considered in risk analysis, which is common practice in ecotoxicology but not always in the context of practical applications in risk engineering, a more comprehensive picture of the environmental toxicity of a chemical substance can be obtained.  相似文献

Sulphur dioxide has been monitored for many years at several rural sites in east-central England, and its temporal and spatial distribution and sources are reasonably well established. The air quality limit values of the Council of the European Communities are not exceeded. NO, NO2 and O3 have also been measured continuously for over 5 years at one rural site and for 2 years at another three sites in this region, and preliminary distribution patterns of these gases are available. The oxides of nitrogen, like SO2, are greatest on average in winter months, but O3 is greatest on average in May, although peak hourly events exceeding the World Health Organisation Environmental Health Criteria (WHOEHC) are common during other summer months. The oxides of nitrogen have exceeded the WHOEHC on occasion, and these are thought to have derived mostly from motor vehicles in distant towns, the gases then travelling in shallow inversion layers.Rainwater acidities and other constituents have been measured for over 7 years at several sites in the region, initially on a weekly basis, but in recent years on a daily and then an hourly basis at a few sites, and preliminary distribution patterns are available. Rainwater acidity is greatest on average in Spring, following the O3 pattern more closely than those of the other gases. Daily deposited acidity is episodal. Hourly concentrations of acidity in rainwater during rain events show more than one type of pattern.  相似文献

The reduction of NO by the CO produced by incomplete combustion in the flue gas can remove CO and NO simultaneously and economically. However, there are some problems and challenges in the industrial application which limit the application of this process. In this work, noble metal catalysts and transition metal catalysts used in the reduction of NO by CO in recent years are systematically reviewed, emphasizing the research progress on Ir-based catalysts and Cu-based catalysts with prospective applications. The effects of catalyst support, additives, pretreatment methods, and physicochemical properties of catalysts on catalytic activity are summarized. In addition, the effects of atmosphere conditions on the catalytic activity are discussed. Several kinds of reaction mechanisms are proposed for noble metal catalysts and transition metal catalysts. Ir-based catalysts have an excellent activity for NO reduction by CO in the presence of O2. Cu-based bimetallic catalysts show better catalytic performance in the absence of O2, in that the adsorption and dissociation of NO can occur on both oxygen vacancies and metal sites. Finally, the potential problems existing in the application of the reduction of NO by CO in industrial flue gas are analyzed and some promising solutions are put forward through this review.

The paper reviews the status of granular bed dust filtration theory and its experimental verification. First, works on fluid flow around a single sphere and their relevance to filtration theory are reviewed and solutions of flows in packed and fludized beds of granules are presented. Solutions for creeping flows, potential flows, intermediate and high Reynolds number flows are discussed in relation to filtration theory. Then the various dust deposition mechanisms and their development are presented. Theories based on inertia, diffusion, and other mechanisms are reviewed. Some of the latest theories combining the different effects are described. Experimental data from the literature are presented and compared with various theoretical models.  相似文献

Environmental monitoring faces the challenge of measuring an increasing number of analytes at ever decreasing concentrations. Since not all species of a given analyte have the same detrimental impact on the environment, new analytical devices and techniques are required to distinguish between the different species of a pollutant or different groups of pollutants. This paper describes analytical techniques based on biomaterials that are toxically sensitive to pollutants. This approach permits the biomonitoring of certain compounds by looking at their toxic properties. Although these techniques are based on a sound analytical strategy, their applications are limited because most of the interactions between the biological material and the analyte are irreversible. Additionally, the immobilised biological material has a limited stability. Several biomonitoring strategies based on electrochemical biosensing are discussed here and how to recover the bioactivity of biosensing system, both in discrete and automated procedures, is also reviewed.  相似文献

Environmental objects (surface and groundwater, soil, bottom sediments, wastewater) are reservoirs in which large-scale multidirectional exchange of determinants of antibiotic resistance between clinical strains and natural bacteria takes place. The review discusses the results of studies on antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) isolated from environmental objects (water, soil, sewage, permafrost) of the Russian Federation. Despite the relevance of the topic, the number of available publications examining the resistomes of Russian water bodies and soils is small. The most studied environmental objects are surface waters (rivers, lakes), permafrost deposits. Soil resistomes are less studied. Data on ARG and ARB in wastewater are the least covered in publications. In most of the studies, antibiotic resistance of isolated pure bacterial cultures was determined phenotypically. A significant number of publications are devoted to the resistance of natural isolates of Vibrio cholerae, since the lower reaches of the Volga and Don rivers are endemic to cholera. Molecular genetic methods were used in a small number of studies. Geographically, the south of the European part of Russia is the most studied. There are also publications on the distribution of ARG in water bodies of Siberia and the Russian Far East. There are practically no publications on such developed regions of Russia as the center and northwest of the European part of Russia. The territory of the country is very large, anthropogenic and natural factors in its various regions vary significantly; therefore, it seems interesting to combine all available data in one work.

An expanded reaction kinetic model, including 17 surface reactions, is proposed to explain the yields of PCDD/F obtained in an experimental study of the reaction of 2-chlorophenol over a CuO/silica surface. The mechanism is loosely based on the gas-phase mechanism for PCDD/F formation widely discussed in the literature. The principal differences are the impact of chemisorption of 2-chlorophenols to metal oxides on radical formation and the steric hindrance of oxygen-centered radicals on the surface inhibiting radical-radical reaction pathways that lead to formation of dibenzo-p-dioxin (DD). Gas-phase molecule-surface-bound adsorbate reactions are the preferred route of DD formation, while radical-radical surface reactions are the main channel for dichloro-dibenzofuran (DCDF) formation. These results suggest that the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism, involving radical-radical surface reactions, and the Eley-Rideal mechanism, involving a gas-phase molecule and surface-bound adsorbate, are responsible for PCDF and PCDD formation on surfaces, respectively. The calculated yields of DCDF and DD are in reasonable agreement with experimental results.  相似文献

Fundamental concepts in the theory and design of the flooded disc scrubber - a new variable throat orifice contactor are presented. Test data from laboratory, pilot plant, and full scale operations on lime kiln, electric furnace, open hearth, blast furnace, and basic oxygen furnace applications are presented and compared with available data on other scrubbers. Conclusions are that performance on a given problem is primarily a function of power input - thus supporting the correlation concept of Semrau - and that little scale-up factor exists in utilizing pilot plant data in the design of full scale systems.  相似文献

In this review of lysimeters, different aspects concerning soil-filling technique, lysimeter size and materials, and drainage-system type are discussed. The placement of lysimeters in the field is dealt with, as are other types of field measurements that can provide complementary information. Evaluations of various properties are based on the assumption that the lysimeters are to be used for estimating pesticide leaching. Guidelines for use in designing a suitable lysimeter experiment for this purpose are described, with special emphasis placed on using the results as a basis for pesticide registration. In this context, some general recommendations are identified. Concerning the lysimeter itself, stress is placed on the importance of using undisturbed soil monoliths. It is recommended that two soil types, i.e. sand and clay, be used and that the management practices carried out closely resemble normal farming practices. Further recommendations include weekly water sampling, two watering regimes, and use of the normal and double the normal application rate of pesticides.  相似文献
