Effects of Pollinator Loss on Endemic New Zealand Mistletoes (Loranthaceae)   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Abstract: The endemic mistletoes Peraxilla colensoi and P. tetrapetala (Loranthaceae) have declined considerably in New Zealand since 1840, reputedly because of introduced herbivores but coincident with a major decline in native bird densities. We show that at two South Island sites ( Craigieburn and Ohau) there are too few bird pollinators visiting the flowers to allow full fruit set. We studied pollination rates in P. colensoi at Wakefield and P. tetrapetala at Craigieburn over four flowering seasons and P. tetrapetala in one season at Ohau. Supplemental hand pollination increased fruit production 1.25–5.3 times at Craigieburn and Ohau but not at Wakefield. Excluding birds by covering mistletoes with mesh bags decreased fruit set significantly at Wakefield but had little effect at Craigieburn and Ohau. Bellbirds ( Anthornis melanura ) and Tuis (   Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae ) visited flowers significantly more often at Wakefield than at Craigieburn. A lack of pollen tubes in the style, not self-incompatibility or resource shortage, caused the low fruit production in unmanipulated flowers at Craigieburn. Thus, at the two P. tetrapetala sites (Craigieburn and Ohau) fruit set was chronically pollen limited, whereas P. colensoi at Wakefield was not pollen-limited. Data from other Peraxilla sites also suggest pollination failure. Our study suggests that the conservation of Peraxilla species will require maintenance of native bird populations. Tuis and Bellbirds are important pollinators and dispersers of many other New Zealand plants, and the breakdown of such mutualistic relationships may have widespread consequences.  相似文献

Abstract: Greater Chicago is home to a surprisingly high concentration of globally significant natural communities. Within the metropolis survive some of the world's best remaining examples of eastern tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, open oak woodland, and prairie wetland. Chicago Wilderness is more than 81,000 ha of protected areas in the urban and suburban matrix. It also is the name of the coalition of more than 110 organizations committed to the survival of these natural lands. The long-term health of these imperiled communities depends on proper management of the more extensive, restorable lands that surround and connect the patches of high-quality habitat. Information critical to the success of conservation efforts in the region includes (1) a current vegetation map of Chicago Wilderness in sufficient detail to allow quantitative goal setting for the region's biodiversity recovery plan; (2) quantified fragmentation status of the natural communities; and (3) patterns of land-cover change and their effects on the vitality of communities under threat. We used multispectral data from the Landsat thematic mapper (October 1997) and associated ground truthing to produce a current vegetation map. With multitemporal remote-sensing data (acquired in 1972, 1985, and 1997), we derived land-cover maps of the region at roughly equivalent intervals over the past 25 years. Analyses with geographic information system models reveal rapid acceleration of urban and suburban sprawl over the past 12 years. Satellite images provide striking visual comparisons of land use and health. They also provide banks of geographically referenced data that make quantitative tracking of trends possible. The data on habitat degradation and fragmentation are the biological foundation of quantitative goals for regional restoration.  相似文献

为了探明磺胺甲恶唑(sulfamethoxazole,SMZ)的生态毒理效应,通过实验室人工控制毒理实验,研究了低浓度SMZ暴露对小麦体内超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)活性、叶绿素(CHL)和蛋白质(SP)含量的影响.结果显示:染毒7d后,各浓度组小麦叶片的SOD活性均被显著诱导(P<0.0l),并且染毒浓度的升高增强了SOD的活性,表明SMZ暴露胁迫下,小麦可启动自身的保护机制以最大限度地减少自由基损伤.而小麦叶片的CHL含量,随着SMZ染毒浓度的增加而逐渐降低.并且当SMZ暴露浓度较高时,小麦叶片的CHL含量被显著抑制(P<0.05)).当SMZ染毒浓度为0.05~ 0.50 mg· L-1时,SP的含量被显著诱导(P< 0.01));1.00 mg·L-1SMZ对SP的含量产生显著(P<0.01)抑制,这说明SMZ染毒剂量将对蛋白质的合成产生严重影响.综上,SOD的活性变化可反映出SMZ暴露对小麦的污染效应及其生态毒性作用,但将其作为评估SMZ污染暴露的生物标志物有待于进一步深入研究.  相似文献

The effects of autotomy (shedding of appendages) on survival and growth rates of painted spiny lobster were investigated at Northwest Island (23° 18?? S, 152° 43?? E) during the period 2003?C2006. Adult lobsters were captured, tagged, and classified as either uninjured (n?=?68), minimally injured (n?=?39) or moderately injured (n?=?19) depending on the number and type of appendages that were autotomized during capture and handling. Six to thirty-six months after release, 86 lobsters were recaptured (mean time at large?=?305?days). Recapture rates of uninjured (64.7%), minimally injured (71.8%), and moderately injured lobsters (73.7%) were not significantly different. Similarly, mean annualized growth rates of uninjured, minimally injured, and moderately injured lobsters were not significantly different. This suggests that the energetic cost of a single episode of autotomy is either negligible or exists as a trade-off with some other life history trait, such as reduced reproductive performance. These results support the use of certain management tools (e.g., size limits) that prescribe release of non-legal lobsters, regardless of their injury status.  相似文献

Abstract: New species conservation strategies, including the EDGE of Existence (EDGE) program, have expanded threatened species assessments by integrating information about species' phylogenetic distinctiveness. Distinctiveness has been measured through simple scores that assign shared credit among species for evolutionary heritage represented by the deeper phylogenetic branches. A species with a high score combined with a high extinction probability receives high priority for conservation efforts. Simple hypothetical scenarios for phylogenetic trees and extinction probabilities demonstrate how such scoring approaches can provide inefficient priorities for conservation. An existing probabilistic framework derived from the phylogenetic diversity measure (PD) properly captures the idea of shared responsibility for the persistence of evolutionary history. It avoids static scores, takes into account the status of close relatives through their extinction probabilities, and allows for the necessary updating of priorities in light of changes in species threat status. A hypothetical phylogenetic tree illustrates how changes in extinction probabilities of one or more species translate into changes in expected PD. The probabilistic PD framework provided a range of strategies that moved beyond expected PD to better consider worst‐case PD losses. In another example, risk aversion gave higher priority to a conservation program that provided a smaller, but less risky, gain in expected PD. The EDGE program could continue to promote a list of top species conservation priorities through application of probabilistic PD and simple estimates of current extinction probability. The list might be a dynamic one, with all the priority scores updated as extinction probabilities change. Results of recent studies suggest that estimation of extinction probabilities derived from the red list criteria linked to changes in species range sizes may provide estimated probabilities for many different species. Probabilistic PD provides a framework for single‐species assessment that is well‐integrated with a broader measurement of impacts on PD owing to climate change and other factors.  相似文献

A study was conducted on anaerobic digestion of potato waste and cattle manure mixture, inoculated with 12% inoculum and diluted to 1:1 substrate water ratio at 37 +/- 1 degrees C. Initially pH of substrate was found to be 4.5 to 5.0. Lime and sodium bicarbonate solutions were employed to adjust the pH to 7.5. Biogas production continued up to 10 and 7 days, when lime and sodium bicarbonate solutions were used to adjust the pH, respectively. Biogassification potential was studied in response to different ratio of waste and cattle manure. Biogas production rate was higher when potato waste and cattle manure were used in 50:50 ratio. Effect of two different concentrations (2.5 and 5.0 ppm) of three heavy metals viz. (Ni (II), Zn (II) and Cd (II)) on anaerobic digestion of substrate (potato waste--cattle manure, 50:50) was studied. At 2.5 ppm, all the three heavy metals increased biogas production rate over the control value. The percentage increase in biogas production over the control was highest by Cd, followed by Ni and Zn. In all the treatments, methane content of biogas increased with increase in time after feeding. Various physico-chemical parameters viz. total solids, total volatile solids, total organic carbon and chemical oxygen demand considerably declined after 7 days of digestion and decline was greater in presence of heavy metals as compared to control. The physico-chemical parameters revealed maximum decrease in the presence of 2.5-ppm concentrations of heavy metals with the substrate. Among all the three heavy metals employed in the study, Cd++ at 2.5 ppm was found to produce maximum biogas production rate. The use of three heavy metals to enhance biogas production from potato and other horticultural waste is discussed.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to describe the distribution of ophiuroids on the continental shelf and slope of the East Sea, off the Korean Peninsula. Three cruises were made from 1985 to 1987 in the area between 35 to 38°N and 129 to 130°E. A total of ten species was identified from the samples collected at 136 stations. Among them four species (Amphiodia craterodometa, Amphioplus macraspis, Ophiura leptoctenia and Ophiura sarsi) constituted more than 98% of abundance by number. The continental shelf off Gampo, near 35°40N, could be considered to be the southern limit of cold-water species. The abundance of dominant ophiuroids changed according to depth. Three faunal zones, namely, the inner shelf, the shelf edge and the slope zones, coincided with the topographic divisions of continental shelf and slope. The major inhabitant of the inner shelf was A. craterodometa and that of the continental slope was O. leptoctenia. The shelf edge area revealed a transitional zone where all four species occurred, contributing to the total number of individuals with almost equal proportions. The temperature of bottom waters was considered to be a factor determining zonal distribution. The sediment characteristics were not closely related to ophiuroid distribution.  相似文献

Summary The solar orientation response of a small spider (gen. nov.: Araneae: Araneidae: Araneinae) is examined at a semi-arid location in tropical Western Australia. The spiders rest beneath horizontal dome-shaped webs close to the ground surface on spinifex (Triodia sp.). The spiders are small (c. 5 mm long) and robust, being only twice as long as wide. Spider orientation, elevation, wind velocity, radiation and wet and dry bulb temperatures together with spider and egg-sac temperatures were measured throughout the day. The spiders orientated their long axis to the solar azimuth through much of the day and postured to the solar elevation; in so doing they tracked the apparent movement of the sun throughout the day with considerable precision, far exceeding that of other spiders studied. Stepwise regression indicated that the solar position was the most important environmental factor associated with the posturing and orientation. The variance in the orientation of the population was associated with a suite of environmental variables related to wind velocity and temperature. Spider (abdominal) temperature had a curvilinear relationship with ambient temperature, with a plateau at c. 35° C, whereas egg-sac temperature had a strictly linear relationship with ambient temperature. Stepwise regression indicates that both the spider and egg-sac temperatures are related mainly to net radiation and ambient temperature. The spiders can alter the incident radiation to which they are exposed by c. 2.2 times which represent the limits of the exposed silhouette area between full dorsal sunlight and the posterior (or anterior) aspect. Under hot conditions the spiders posture and orientate such that the long axis of the body is orientated abdomen towards the sun.  相似文献

This paper reports a study of costs and benefits of Coral Triangle Initiatives (CTI) and Mangrove Rehabilitation Projects (MRP) in the Solomon Islands. It was observed that the communities have different attitudes and perceptions toward climate change challenges. The different scales and magnitudes of climate change impacts that are perceived at these sites, and the different subsistence realities make them have varied responses and points of view regarding such impacts. For instance, respondents from Oibola experienced the most adverse impacts from climatic change events compared to those living in the Naro and Sairaghi sites. Introduction of CTI and MRP has driven the villagers to travel out far from their traditional fishing grounds to catch enough fish to sell and support their families. This implies higher fishing costs and time for commute. From a social perspective, this weakens the communal bond in the community. In spite of these trade-offs, the respondents expressed satisfaction with the level of benefits received from the projects, which included the rehabilitation of the ecosystems and breeding grounds for fish and habitats around the area. We mapped the costs and benefits of these projects to the villagers, and although no amounts or figures were disclosed, the benefits are compared against corresponding costs. One key factor for the success of the initiatives was the cooperation and involvement of recipient villagers, and even including the management MPAs.  相似文献

The family of tiger beetles (Cicindelidae) is an appropriate indicator taxon for determining regional patterns of biodiversity because (1) its taxonomy is stabilized; (2) its biology and general life history are well understood, (3) individuals are readily observed and manipulated in the field, (4) the family occurs world-wide and in a broad range of habitat types; (5) each species tends to be specialized within a narrow habitat; (6) patterns of species richness are highly correlated with those of other vertebrate and invertebrate taxa; and (7) the taxon includes species of potential economic importance. Logistical advantages provide some of the strongest arguments for selecting tiger beetles as an appropriate indicator taxon. Species numbers of tiger beetles are relatively well known for 129 countries. Eight countries alone account for more than half the world total of 2028 known species. Species numbers are also indicated for eleven biogeographical zones of the world. For gridded squares across North America, the Indian subcontinent, and Australia, species richness of tiger beetles, birds, and butterflies shows significant positive correlations. However, tiger beetle species numbers can be reliably determined within fifty hours on a single site, compared to months or years for birds or butterflies, and the advantage of using tiger beetles in conservation biology is evident  相似文献

Temperature and salinity affected both length of larval development and mortality inNecora puber collected in the Ría de A Coruña during December 1984 and January 1985. Development time decreased considerably with increased temperature. This decrease was sharper when temperature increased from 15° to 20°C than when it increased from 20° to 25°C. At 35S, average development took 48, 32 and 28 d at 15°, 20° and 25°C, respectively. At the three salinities tested (25, 30 and 35), larval development was completed only at 15°C, at 20°C/30 and 35S, and at 25°C/35S. Development times at 15° and 20°C were highly significantly different at both 35 and 30S (P 0.01). However, there were no significant differences between development times at 20° and 25°C (P > 0.05). Within any one specific temperature series, no significant difference was observed between the salinity values tested (P > 0.05). The duration of each of the five zoeal stages was similar within each and the same temperature/salinity combination, whereas the duration of the megalop was twice as long as any of the zoeal stages. The combination of the lowest temperature (15°C) and the highest salinity (35) tested resulted in the greatest larval survival of 28%. Highest mortality occurred at 25°C, at which temperature development was completed only at 35S. A sharp drop in larval survival was observed in the transition period Zoea V — megalop in all combinations of temperature and salinity tested. Within the limits of tolerance to temperature and salinity, the former effected more pronounced differences in the duration of larval development, while salinity appeared to constitute a limiting factor for survival.  相似文献

To determine the pharmacokinetics of a small lipophilic molecule in vivo, the distribution and accumulation of 99mTc-radiolabelled disofenin (diisopropylacetanilide iminodiacetic acid) were traced during 1991–1992 by scintigraphy and gamma well counting in winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus collected from Boston Harbor and Long Island Sound in 1992), lobsters (Homarus americanus collected from Massachusetts Bay in 1991), and soft-shell clams (Mya arenaria purchased in 1991). The agent was distributed throughout the bodies of lobsters within 12 s, throughout flounder within 40 s, and throughout clams within 2 min. It was concentrated most strongly by the liver of flounder, which contained 61.2±7.8% of the injected dose within 1 h of injection, and by the lobster hepatopancreas. Accumulation also occurred in the flounder kidney, lobster antennal glands, and the kidney and pericardial glands of clams. The compound was rapidly excreted from the flounder liver into the gall bladder, and from the lobster hepatopancreas into the stomach. The data suggest its excretion from the lobster antennal glands and clam kidneys. The rate of clearance of disofenin from the body varied among species: 99±2.1% of the initial dose remained in flounder sampled 16 to 24 h after injection, compared to 80.5±7% remaining in the lobster after 15 h, and 87.4±5.9% remaining in clams after 27 h. The clearance rates in flounder and lobster are considered to be minimum values because of the lack of gut activity in unfed individuals. Overall, these in vivo tracer studies establish the utility of scintigraphy for assessing the uptake and excretion of a lipid soluble compound in different taxa, and may be applicable for evaluating disease and/or environmental effects on organ function in marine animals.  相似文献

Life table response experiments were performed to evaluate the demographic consequences of: (1) the dietary regimes and (2) the length of laboratory rearing in strains of Dinophilus gyrociliatus, a small infaunal polychaete. The first experiment was performed using animals recently collected from the natural environment and fed either on spinach or on Tetramin (artificial fish food with high caloric content). Starting from this original group, two distinct laboratory strains were established: the first raised only with spinach, the second only with Tetramin. In the first experiment, the group fed on Tetramin exhibited greater population growth rate (5), shorter generation time (T) and reduced expectation of life (e0) with respect to the animals fed on spinach. The second experiment took place 2 years later to evaluate the difference in life history traits between these two laboratory strains. In the case of the group fed on Tetramin, population parameters exhibited marked variations; in fact, 5 and the net reproductive rate (R0) were significantly higher and T and e0 were shorter than the corresponding parameters observed in the first experiment. Conversely, the demographic variations induced by laboratory rearing on a spinach diet were limited to a reduction in the expectation of life. The decomposition analysis showed that the reduction in generation time and the increase in fecundity occurring during the first 4 weeks of life accounted for nearly all the differences in 5. During the long breeding period at constant temperature, photoperiod and salinity, a continuous selection of the most precocious and fecund individuals may have taken place as a consequence of the abundance of resources and the lack of predation.  相似文献

At 33 salinity a tissue stump formed 2 to 3 d after autotomy and developing ossicles were present by the fourth day inOphiothrix angulata (Say). Regeneration proceeded rapidly from the sixth day until the thirteenth day, when the rate decreased greatly. The length of the regenerated arm and the number of ossicles formed did not vary over a salinity range of 28 to 38 S, but were significantly less at 23 S. The number of ossicles regenerated increased linearly (y=1.9 x-7.7;r=0.9089) with the calcium concentrations ranging from 3.8 to 9.5 mM. No ossicle formation occurred at 3.8 mM calcium concentration. Rate of net uptake of calcium-45 into the ossicles of intact individuals in salinities of 28 and 33 was significantly greater than that in 23 and 38 S. However, net uptake rate of calcium into the soft tissues of the arms was significantly higher at 18S than at the lower two salinities.  相似文献

Sediment produced by parrotfishes (family Scaridae) may comprise new bioeroded material and/or reworked sediment. The relative contribution of the two components was examined in two bioeroding Chlorurus species, C. gibbus and C. sordidus, from Lizard Island in the Northern Great Barrier Reef. The relative importance of reworked sediment was determined based on direct estimates of sediment ingestion. In C. gibbus, 2.4% of the sediment produced is reworked. In C. sordidus, reworking contributes 27.2%. Comparisons of sediment size-distributions in epilithic algal communities, gut contents and defaecation sites suggest that both C. gibbus and C. sordidus markedly decrease the particle size of sediment as a result of ingestion and trituration in the pharyngeal apparatus.  相似文献

Soils from old Au-mine tailings (La Petite Faye, France) were investigated in relation to the natural vegetation cover to evaluate the risk of metals and metalloids (Pb, As, Sb) mobilizing and their potential transfer to native plants (Graminea, Betula pendula, Pteridium aquilinum, Equisetum telmateia). The soils are classified as Technosols with high contamination levels of As, Pb, and Sb. The single selective extractions tested to evaluate available fraction (CaCl2, acetic acid, A-Rhizo, and DTPA) showed low labile fractions (<5 % of bulk soil contents), but still significant levels were observed (up to 342.6 and 391.9 mg/kg for As and Pb, respectively) due to the high contamination levels of soils. Even at high soil contaminations (considered as phytotoxic levels for plants), translocation factors for native plants studied are very low resulting in low concentrations of As, Sb, and Pb in their aerial part tissues. This study demonstrates the important role of (1) native plant cover in terms of “stabilization” of these contaminants, and (2) the poor effectiveness of extraction procedures used for this type of soil assemblages, i.e., rich in specific mineral phases.  相似文献

Two mark-recapture studies, regular population censuses, field observations, and laboratory culture were used to study the life history of the tropical marine gastropod Cypraea annulus Linnaeus, 1758 from Cape Maeda, Okinawa Island, from April 1984 to March 1986. In the field, the average rate of increase in shell length of marked juvenile snails was 1.0±0.3 mm wk-1 (N=13), with a maximum of 1.5 mm wk-1 (initial shell length 10.6 to 17.2 mm). In the laboratory, the maximum growth rate of juveniles was 3.0 mm wk-1 with food ad libitum. Snails with primordial teeth on the shells grew at a rate of 0.1 to 0.5 mm wk-1 for about 2 wk. The adults continued to grow at a similar rate for an additional 3 to 6 wk, and ceased detectable growth when some females started spawning egg masses. In the littoral zone on Okinawa Island, snails reproduced throughout the year. Egg masses brooded by three females (shell length 17.4 to 21.3 mm) in the field contained 90 000 to 133 000 ova. In the laboratory, brooding periods of three females lasted 6,8, and 9 d. The estimated average frequency of spawning was 5 egg masses female-1 yr-1. The mean shell length of adult females (20.3 mm) was significantly larger than that of adult males (19.6 mm). The life-history strategy of C. annulus is characterized by rapid growth, high fecundity, and repeated spawning throughout the year.  相似文献

Variation amongst wild populations of Scytosiphon lomentaria (Lyngbye) Link is shown to be of a continuous nature, and the species cannot be readily segregated into distinct subspecific taxa on the basis of morphological characteristics. Zoospores derived from plurilocular sporangia developed asexually into cylindrical thalli under long and short days at 16°C. The progeny of some cylindrical thalli included microthalli bearing plurilocular sporangia or unilocular sporangia. Cylindrical forms of S. lomentaria were obtained in culture from wild microthalli of two kinds, bearing either plurilocular or unilocular sporangia. The microthalli differ morphologically from the ralfsioid stages commonly known to be plethysmothalli and sporophytes of S. lomentaria, but closely resemble the microthalli derived from cultures of wild S. lomentaria.  相似文献
