In this study, effect of fibre surface treatment on tensile, flexural and chemical resistance properties were studied for sisal fibre reinforced composites. Natural ligno cellulosic sisal fibre reinforced composites were prepared by different surface treatments by hand lay-up method. Fibre surface treatments were carried out to produce good interface between the fibre and the matrix to improve the mechanical properties. Fibre surface treatments were done by boiled the sisal fibres in different % of NaOH and treated the fibres in different % of NaOH, treated in acetic acid and methanol. Unsaturated polyester resin was used as the matrix for preparing the composites. For comparison, these properties for untreated sisal fibre reinforced composites were also studied. From the results it was observed that 18% aqueous NaOH boiled sisal fibre reinforced composites have higher tensile, flexural properties than other composites. Untreated sisal fibre composites show lower properties than treated composites. Chemical resistance properties indicate that all sisal fibre reinforced composites are resistance to all chemicals except carbon tetra chloride. The tests are carried out as per the ASTM standards.  相似文献

A number of attempts have been made to recycle cotton/polyester blend woven fabrics after use; however, most of these fabrics are disposed of in landfills. Major part of these blend fabrics are not recycled due to complexity of the fibre arrangement and cannot be separated economically. This study shows that these discarded woven fabrics could be directly used as reinforcements in composites without fibre separation. Uniform alignment in the woven fabric provided consistent properties to the composites. The fabrics were reinforced by soybean-based-bioresins to produce biocomposites. The composites were analysed for mechanical, thermal, viscoelastic and morphological properties. Porosity and wettability of the composites were also evaluated. Results demonstrate that the tensile strength and modulus of over 100 and 10 MPa, respectively, can be obtained without any fibre treatment. Furthermore, impact strength over 70 kJ/m2 was obtained without any chemical treatment on fibres. The porosity of the composites produced was less than 9 vol%. Additionally, the fabrics were treated with alkali in order to improve the fibre–matrix interface and the composite properties were studied. From the economical perspective, these composites can be produced at a low cost as the major component is available for free or low cost.  相似文献

The variation of mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural properties of randomly oriented unsaturated polyester based sisal/carbon fibre reinforced hybrid composites with different fibre weight ratios have been studied. The chemical resistance test of these hybrid composites to various solvents, acids and alkalies were studied. The effect of NaOH treatment of sisal fibres on the tensile, flexural and chemical resistance properties of these sisal/carbon hybrid composites has also been studied. The hybrid composites showed an increase in tensile and flexural properties with increase in the carbon fibre loading. The tensile properties and flexural properties of these hybrid composites have been found to be higher than that of the matrix. Significant improvement in tensile properties and flexural properties of the sisal/carbon hybrid composites has been observed by alkali treatment. The chemical resistance test results showed that these untreated and alkali treated hybrid composites are résistance to all chemicals except carbon tetra chloride. Hand lay-up technique was used for making the composites and tests are carried out by using ASTM methods.  相似文献

In this research, the influence of thermo-mechanical degradation of polypropylene (PP) on water absorption and thickness swelling of beech wood flour–PP composites were studied. For this purpose, a virgin PP was thermo-mechanically degraded by two times extrusion under controlled conditions. The results showed that the melt flow index, water absorption and thickness swelling of PP significantly increase by extrusion and re-extrusion. The virgin PP and degraded polypropylene were compounded with wood flour (at 60% by weight wood flour loading) in a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder in presence or absence of MAPP to produce wood flour–PP composites. From the results, the composites containing recycled PP exhibited higher water absorption and thickness swelling. The use of MAPP decreased water absorption and thickness swelling in composites made of virgin or recycled PP.  相似文献

Compositions of wood-polypropylene composites (WPCs) are prepared through melt compounding followed by injection moulding. WPCs are formulated for eight compositions with a different weight ratio of wood, virgin or recycled polypropylene and coupling agent. WPCs compositions are compared in terms of Melt Flow Index, Tensile, FESEM images, Flexural and crystallinity index for same operating variable conditions. From the results, recycled polypropylene based WPCs are superior in comparison to virgin polypropylene based WPCs. With the addition of 5 % coupling agent in recycled polypropylene-based composites for 45:50 composition, tensile and flexural values of WPCs are higher in comparison to all composition and neat virgin or recycled polypropylene. This work stands for the utilization of waste wood with recycled plastic for replacement of wood and virgin plastic.  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA)—maple fibre composites have been synthesised using a series of sequentially modified cellulose fibres (namely alkylation followed by either acetylation or silanation). Confirmations of the sequential modifications were made using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Inductively Coupled Plasma—Atomic Emission Spectroscopy and the new surface morphologies analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy. The key advantage of the use of sequential treatments (with initial alkali treatment) was the allowance for direct grafting of suitable chemical groups onto the cellulose in the fibre due to the removal of lignin, hemicellulose and other surface impurities. However, a balance was found to exist between alkali exposure time, concentration and resulting fibre integrity. The conditions used resulted in a loss in fibre weight, fibre moisture content and tensile strength. Sequential treatments with acetylation or silane resulted in a 15–21% strength recovery from that of the alkali treated composite. Factors that influenced this recovery in strength were the improved fibre-polymer interface, namely the hydrophilic balancing of the fibres and this further affected the thermal-hydrolysis of the PLA during composite fabrication.  相似文献

Detailed analysis of the effects of recycling process on long-term water absorption, thickness swelling and water desorption behavior of natural fiber polypropylene composites is reported. Composite materials containing polypropylene and wood flour, rice hulls or bagasse fibers were produced at constant fiber loading and were exposed to a simulated recycling process consisting of up to five times grinding and reprocessing under controlled conditions. A wide range of analytical methods including water absorption/desorption tests, thickness swelling tests, density measurement, scanning electron microscopy, image analysis, contact angle, fiber length analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to understand the hygroscopic behavior of the recycled composites. Water absorption and thickness swelling behaviors were modeled using existing predictive models. Results indicated that generally the recycled composites had considerably lower water absorption and thickness swellings as compared with the original composites which were attributed to changes in physical and chemical properties of the composites induced by the recycling process.  相似文献

Natural fibres offer an interesting alternative to petrochemical products. Reclaimed cotton is mainly used as a low cost fibre to “fill” composites used as interior parts in the automotive industry. Mechanical requirements of such composites are low and the potential of the cotton-fibre to reinforce plastics is not used adequately. This paper gives background information and discusses the use of the cotton fibres in composites compared to ramie fibres. In this study the fibre strength was tested with a Dia-Stron device, fineness was tested with Fibreshape. A roller card is well suited to process fibres to a multi layer web. Cotton and ramie fibres were embedded in epoxy resin and a bio-based resin PTP®. The composites were tested for impact and tensile properties. The results show that mechanical properties of the composites are strongly influenced by fibre properties. The data and results demonstrate the important role force-elongation characteristics of fibre play in optimising the properties of natural fibre composites. Cotton with its morphological and mechanical properties can play a more crucial role to optimise products with a view to improve the impact properties.  相似文献

The majority of disposable cups are made from paper plastic laminates (PPL) which consist of high quality cellulose fibre with a thin internal polyethylene coating. There are limited recycling options for PPLs and this has contributed to disposable cups becoming a high profile, problematic waste. In this work disposable cups have been shredded to form PPL flakes and these have been used to reinforce polypropylene to form novel paper plastic composites (PPCs). The PPL flakes and polypropylene were mixed, extruded, pelletised and injection moulded at low temperatures to prevent degradation of the cellulose fibres. The level of PPL flake addition and the use of a maleated polyolefin coupling agent to enhance interfacial adhesion have been investigated. Samples have been characterised using tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis. Use of a coupling agent allows composites containing 40 wt.% of PPL flakes to increase tensile strength of PP by 50% to 30 MPa. The Young modulus also increases from 1 to 2.5 GPa and the work to fracture increases by a factor of 5. The work demonstrates that PPL disposable cups have potential to be beneficially reused as reinforcement in novel polypropylene composites.  相似文献

In this research, hybrid composite materials were prepared from combination of oil palm Empty fruit bunches (EFB) fibre and jute fibre as reinforcement, epoxy as polymer matrix. This study intended to investigate the effect of jute fiber hybridization and different layering pattern on the physical properties of oil palm EFB-Epoxy composites. Water absorption and thickness swelling test reveal that hybrid composite shows a moderate water absorption which is 11.20% for hybrid EFB/Jute/EFB composite and 6.08% for hybrid Jute/EFB/Jute composite. The thickness swelling and water absorption of the hybrid composites slightly increased as the layering pattern of hybrid composites changed. Hybrid composites are more water resistance and dimensional stable compare to the pure EFB composites. This is attributed to the more hydrophilic nature of EFB composites. Hybridization of oil palm EFB composites with jute fibres can improve the dimensional stability and density of pure EFB and Jute fibre reinforced composites has higher density of 1.2 g/cm3 compared to all other composites.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of recycled polypropylene (PP) on the rheological, mechanical and thermal properties of wood flour polypropylene composites. Beforehand, the influence of wood flour treated with a coupling agent on the rheological behaviour had been looked at. By analysing moduli and viscosity curves and studying the thermal and mechanical properties of samples with 10% filler it was possible to see that the recycled PP that was added change in either its physical properties or its rheology. In the other wood plastic composites (WPC) studied, slight changes in the rheology behaviour were observed. However, the same processing parameters may be used with and without recycled PP. Recycled PP is appropriate for these kinds of composites to maintain the optimal rheological properties that make it easier to process the material by extrusion. Furthermore, it is also possible to maintain the thermal and mechanical properties in comparison with the behaviour of virgin PP/wood flour composites.  相似文献

A single-plant biobased composite material was prepared from fibre and matrix constituents produced from the castor plant, ricinus communis. It is shown that the mechanical properties of the castor plant fibres are comparable to those of other bast fibres and that the stiffness and strength characteristics of the castor fibre/polyamide 11 biocomposite compare well with those of other natural fibre composites. By using a biobased thermoplastic matrix material the reliance on non-renewable feedstock sources is reduced and end-of-lifetime recyclability is improved. The analysis of the environmental performance of the new castor plant composite suggests that the biobased material has great potential as a sustainable alternative replacing glass fibre-reinforced plastics.  相似文献

Biocomposites of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) reinforced with chicken feather fibre (CF) were prepared using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as vulcanizing agent. Composites with three series of chicken feather fibres were studied i.e., raw (RCF), sterilized (SCF) and alkali treated (ACF). The cure characteristics of composites were studied. The mechanical properties of NBR were found to be improved by the incorporation of chicken feather fibre in all forms. Surface modification of the fibre was done by alkaline treatment to improve the interfacial adhesion and it characterised by FTIR. Better properties are shown by the composites with ACF. The swelling behaviour of the composites in N,N-dimethylformamide, acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide and water were analyzed for the swelling coefficient values. The biodegradable characteristics of CF reinforced NBR composites were studied by soil burial test which indicated that it is an eco-friendly and acceptable material. Scanning electron microscopy studies support the results of mechanical properties. The outcome obtained from this study is believed to assist the development of environmentally–friendly composites especially for specific product applications like oil seals, hoses and automobile bushes etc.  相似文献

In the present work, sawdust reinforced polypropylene composites were fabricated using an extruder and an injection molding machine. Raw sawdust was chemically treated with benzene diazonium salt in order to improve the mechanical properties of the composites. The effect of the chemically treated sawdust reinforced PP composites was evaluated from their mechanical and surface morphological properties. The values of the mechanical properties of the chemically treated sawdust–PP composites were found to be significantly higher than those of the raw ones. Water uptake tests revealed that composites prepared from the chemically treated sawdust absorb lower amount of water compared to the ones prepared from raw sawdust, suggesting that hydrophilic nature of the cellulose in the sawdust has significantly decreased upon chemical treatment. The surface morphology obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that raw sawdust–PP composites possess surface roughness with extruded filler moieties, and weak interfacial adhesion between the matrix and the filler while the chemically treated one showed improved filler–matrix interaction. This indicates that better dispersion of the filler with the PP matrix has occurred upon chemical treatment of the filler.  相似文献

Dimensional stability and mechanical performance of polypropylene thermoplastic composites filled with sunflower stalk (SS) flour at 30, 40, 50, and 60 wt% contents of the SS flour were investigated. The thickness swelling and water absorption of the specimens increased with increasing SS flour content. The modulus in the flexural and tensile improved with increasing SS flour content while the tensile and flexural strengths of the specimens decreased. The use of maleic anhydride polypropylene (3 wt%) had a positive effect on the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of the polypropylene thermoplastic composites filled with SS flour. The melting temperature of polypropylene decreased with increasing content of the SS flour. The degree of crystallinity of filled polypropylene composites between fibre loading of 0–30 % by weight was higher than that of unfilled polypropylene composites. However, further increment in the filler content decreased the degree of crystallinity. The obtained results showed that SS flour could be potentially suitable raw material in the manufacture of polypropylene composites.  相似文献

This study investigates the feasibility of using recycled high density polyethylene (rHDPE), polypropylene (rPP) and old newspaper (rONP) fiber to manufacture experimental composite panels. The panels were made through air-forming and hot press. The effects of the fiber and coupling agent concentration on tensile, flexural, internal bond properties and water absorption and thickness swelling of wood–fiber plastic composites were studied. The use of maleated polypropylene as coupling agent improved the compatibility between the fiber and both plastic matrices and mechanical properties of the resultant composites compared well with those of non-coupled ones. Based on the findings in this work, it appears that recycled materials can be used to manufacture value-added panels without having any significant adverse influence on board properties. It was also found that composites with rHDPE provided moderately superior properties, compared with rPP samples.  相似文献

Biodegradable and ecologically friendly polymer materials attract great attention of many scientific groups in the world as they fit well in the sustainable development policy and are considered to be “a right thing to do” by the general public. Such polymers can be modified by the addition of different fillers, favorably of natural origin. In the paper we provide a comparison between composites based on two biodegradable polymers: poly(lactic acid)—biodegradable, natural stock polymer and poly(butylene succinate)—biodegradable polymer produced from fossil based materials. For each polymer we have prepared a series of composites with different fibres (natural: hemp and flax, and manmade: Cordenka) and different filler loadings. To fully characterize obtained materials thermal, mechanical and surface free energy measurements were performed, completed with morphology observations and an attempt to compare the experimental data for tensile measurements with values obtained using the modified rule of mixtures. The tensile results calculated using the modified rule of mixture for below 30% fibre loading are found to be fitting the experimental data. Composites mechanical properties and morphology were strongly affected by the type of fibre used and its loading, however thermal properties remained almost unchanged. In specific, Cordenka fibres tend to form bunches which presence greatly influences the mechanical properties but still our studies have shown clear advantage of manmade Cordenka fibres over the hemp and flax fibres when considering distribution and fibre–polymer interaction.  相似文献

The increasing amount of waste tyres worldwide makes the disposition of tyres a relevant problem to be solved. In the last years over three million tons of waste tyres were generated in the EU states [ETRA, 2006. Tyre Technology International – Trends in Tyre Recycling. http://www.etra-eu.org]; most of them were disposed into landfills. Since the European Union Landfill Directive (EU Landfill, 1999) aims to significantly reduce the landfill disposal of waste tyres, the development of new markets for the tyres becomes fundamental.Recently some research has been devoted to the use of granulated rubber and steel fibres recovered from waste tyres in concrete. In particular, the concrete obtained by adding recycled steel fibres evidenced a satisfactory improvement of the fragile matrix, mostly in terms of toughness and post-cracking behaviour. As a consequence RSFRC (recycled steel fibres reinforced concrete) appears a promising candidate for both structural and non-structural applications.Within this context a research project was undertaken at the University of Salento (Italy) aiming to investigate the mechanical behaviour of concrete reinforced with RSF (recycled steel fibres) recovered from waste tyres by a mechanical process. In the present paper results obtained by the experimental work performed up to now are reported. In order to evaluate the concrete-fibres bond characteristics and to determine the critical fibre length, pull-out tests were initially carried out. Furthermore compressive strength of concrete was evaluated for different volume ratios of added RSF and flexural tests were performed to analyze the post-cracking behaviour of RSFRC. For comparison purposes, samples reinforced with industrial steel fibres (ISF) were also considered.Satisfactory results were obtained regarding the bond between recycled steel fibres and concrete; on the other hand compressive strength of concrete seems unaffected by the presence of fibres despite their irregular geometric properties. Finally, flexural tests furnished in some cases results comparable to those obtained when using ISF as concerns the post-cracking behaviour.  相似文献

To decrease the usage of petroleum based materials, a kind of bio-resource based composite foams were developed with soy protein isolate (SPI) as reactive reinforcing filler in castor oil based polyurethane foams (PUF) prepared by self-rising method using water as a blowing agent. The resulting composite foams were evaluated for their morphology, density, mechanical and biodegradation properties, etc. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study exhibited characteristic peaks for SPI and PUF and indicated that the amino groups and hydroxyl groups on SPI reacted with polyphenyl polymethylene polyisocyanates (PAPI) to increase the crosslinking degrees of the composite foams. Densities of the resultant composites were found to increase with increasing SPI content. Mechanical properties of the samples were improved with the increase of SPI content. The compost tests further proved that the composite PUF had better biodegradability than neat PUF. Therefore, this research has provided a simple method of preparing the bio-resource based polyurethane foams, while exploring the potential of using SPI in polyurethane foam applications.  相似文献

In this article, flexural, impact and dynamic mechanical properties of the Pineapple leaf fibres (PALF) and Washingtonia trunk fibres (GW) based bio-phenolic hybrid composites were examined. The pure and hybrid composites were fabricated using the hand lay-up technique with an overall fibre weight ratio of 50% in which GW and PALF were maintained in the fibre weight ratios of 50:50, 30:70, and 70:30 denoted as 1G1P, 3G7P, and 7G3P, respectively. Hybrid composites displayed better flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact strength than the GW composites and better viscoelastic properties than the PALF composites. Results revealed that 1G1P hybrid composites exhibited 25% and 12% improvements in flexural strength and modulus compared to the GW composites. 3P7K composites showed a twofold increase in impact strength than GW composites. The storage modulus of the pure and hybrid composites declined rapidly beyond the glass transition temperature. Furthermore, it was observed that the values of storage modulus for all the composites at 150 °C were similar regardless of the composite configuration. The Peak of loss modulus was found to increase in the following order: GW?>?7G3P?>?3G7P?>?1G1P?>?PALF. Furthermore, the temperature at the peak tan delta was improved, and a reduction in the tan delta peak was observed for hybrid composites compared to the pure composites. Finally, the PALF and GW hybrid combinations can be suitable for use in various applications such as textiles, machinery part production industries, medicine, automobiles, etc.
