The competitive interactions between two species of limpet, Patelloida alticostata (Angas), and Cellana tramoserica (Sowerby) were investigated at two sites; a low-lying intertidal platform and an adjacent subtidal reef located in southeastern Australia, during 1977 and 1982. C. tramoserica was relatively more abundant and larger in shell length than P. alticostata at the intertidal site, but P. alticostata was the more abundant species subtidaily. Fences were used to enclose various combinations of the two species to compare both intra- and inter-specific interactions. By repeating this design at two different, but adjacent sites, it was possible to test the generality of any interactions, and to investigate whether the nature of these could explain the observed differences in the relative abundances between the two sites. Intraspecific increases in density affected C. tramoserica more than P. alticostata at both sites. These effects were manifested both lethally (increased mortality at the intertidal site) and sublethally (as decreased growth and tissue weight at the subtidal site). Interspecific comparisons were asymmetrical, but were similar at both sites: C. tramoserica affected P. alticostata more than P. alticostata affected C. tramoserica. These latter effects were, however, only similar, or minor in comparison with the strong intraspecific effect that C. tramoserica had on itself. This suggests that, as has been found in some previous studies, competitive exclusion of the subordinate species (P. alticostata) is unlikely because of the greater intraspecific effects on the superior competitor (C. tramoserica). Furthermore, because there was little difference in the relative competitive abilities of the two species in the two habitats, competition between the species was probably not responsible for the different relative abundances between the two adjacent areas.  相似文献

Although holes drilled by the whelk Dicathais aegrota Reeve, 1846 in the limpet Patelloida alticostata (Angas, 1865) were not in the areas of thinnest shell, they were away from the margin, over the gonad and digestive gland, and in the segments where the predator fitted evenly onto the prey's shell. This complicated handling of prey provides access to energy-rich tissues and probably prevents dislodgement of the predator.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal population dynamics of the subtidal snail Umbonium costatum (Kiener) in Hakodate Bay, northern Japan, are described over a 9-yr period (1982 to 1988, 1992). Annual variations in recruitment success not only caused the highly variable age structure of the population, but also affected its distribution pattern. In heavy recruitment years (1982, 1984 and 1988), location of the densest population differed from the other years, and the areas with 0 yr old individuals were larger. Every year, the distribution of 0 yr olds was mostly restricted to inshore (within 320 m from shore), while the distribution of adults (>0 yr) was mostly restricted to offshore (>320 m from shore). Such patterns may be generated by ontogenetic migration of cohorts to offshore areas. Ontogenetic migration also could have buffered the large annual variation in spat distribution and maintained the small variation in the distribution of adults. (Prince et al. 1988). Density-related migration has also been reported in Acmaea digitalis (Frank 1965), Patella cochlear (Branch 1974) and Patelloida alticostata (Black 1977).Dense populations of the gastropod Umbonium costatum are found in some clean subtidal sandy-bottoms in Japan, e.g. inner part of Hakodate Bay. In the bay, the age structure of U. costatum revealed predominant year-classes. The 0 yr olds were restricted to the shallowest zone (<4 m depth) and most adult (<0 yr) cohorts were restricted to 6 to 7 m depths (Noda 1991a).This paper describes the temporal variability of population structure and distributional patterns of Umbonium costatum, and examines the distribution-regulating processes.  相似文献

The sympatric echinoids Diadema savignyi and D. setosum coexist in shallow reef lagoons throughout East Africa. The reproductive strategies of these echinoids were studied to investigate reproductive isolation as a possible mechanism for maintaining the coexistence of these closely related species. The annual reproductive cycle and lunar periodicity were determined by gonad index measurements, histological examination of gametogenesis, and induction of spawning with injections of KCl. The peak reproductive period of D. savignyi coincided with the north-east monsoon period (when light and temperatures are high) as gonad indices were high (>8%) beginning in February and peaked at 9.7% in May. Gonad indices subsequently rapidly decreased (by 26%) in June at the beginning of the cooler south-east monsoon period. However, the presence of sperm and ova in most months of the year indicates continuous gametogenesis with reduced reproductive effort during the cooler months. The annual cycle for D. setosum showed less of a seasonal trend as gonad indices remained above 7% throughout much of the year but tended to be highest when temperatures were lower. This is the first confirmation of continuous reproduction in these two species at the equator. The reproductive patterns of both species remained consistent over 2 years of sampling. Both species exhibited a synchronized lunar spawning periodicity during the 3 months sampled, with D. setosum spawning on lunar days 8–10 and D. savignyi spawning after the full moon (lunar days 17–18). Whereas spawning in D. savignyi was very tightly synchronized, 20% of D. setosum individuals still spawned after the peak spawning period. The coexistence of these closely related species appears to be maintained by temporal reproductive isolation during the lunar spawning period reinforced by seasonal differences in reproductive effort.Communicated by O. The reproductive season of the Adelomelon brasiliana population of Mar del Plata extends from September to April (austral spring and summer), showing synchronisation with water temperature. Adult gonad state is related to shell-free wet mass. Oocytes reach 200 m in diameter before spawning. In autumn, a resting phase begins, when no new oocytes develop and the non-spawned ones undergo reabsorption. Gonadic development begins during the early winter, when new previtellogenic oocytes can be observed through histology. When measurements of in-vivo fluorescence are used to estimate photosynthesis in the field, the marked temporal and spatial variations in phytoplankton populations, and their nutrient and light histories, have produced varied results. Natural phytoplankton populations in large, flow-through mesocosms with different controlled nutrient and sewage sludge additions were sampled weekly from June to September 1984. Good correlations were observed between the increase in fluorescence upon the addition of DCMU (F) and both in-situ production and the parameters (Pm and ) of the photosynthesis-irradiance curve for these phytoplankton populations. Good correlations were also obtained between DCMU-enhanced fluorescence (FDCMU) and chlorophyll a concentrations. The relationship between F and in-situ 14C production was consistent among mesocosms even in the face of major shifts from diatom-dominated to dinoflagellate-dominated populations. On the other hand, the FDCMU:Chl a relationship was significantly different between mesocosms and related to species composition. It was concluded that F offers the possibility of rapidly and accurately indexing both in-situ production and the photosynthetic capacity of mixed phytoplankton populations.This study was supported by EPA cooperative agreement 810265-03 and NOAA grant NA-83-ABD-00008  相似文献

The reproductive parameters of three species of barnacles common in warm-water regions,Balanus amphitrite Darwin,B. eburneus Gould andB. trigonus Darwin, cultured singly or in pairs for 2 1/2 yr, were compared. All specimens, collected from Tokyo Bay and studied between 1985 and 1987, were fed on newly hatchedArtemia sp. larvae (Tetra strain) and phytoplankton culture and were maintained under constant temperature (20°C) and controlled photoperiods (10 h light:14 h dark). The breeding frequencies of these three species were equally high, from 2 to 4 broods mo–1 in the first year; they were relatively high between October and February, averaging 3 broods mo–1.B. amphitrite, B. eburneus andB. trigonus produced 24, 21 and 11 broods yr–1, respectively. Brood size was quite variable among the three species examined, yielding 4000 embryos brood–1 inB. amphitrite andB. eburneus and 6000 inB. trigonus. Brood interval averaged 4 to 9 d. The moult occurred over short intervals of 4 to 10 d moult–1. Both breeding and moulting frequencies were influenced by low temperature and starvation. Self-fertilization was observed in all species and was more frequent inB. amphitrite than inB. eburneus andB. trigonus. Nutritional condition and temperature seemed to be the main external factors regulating both breeding and moulting processes in barnacles.  相似文献

Patterns of reproductive effort were examined both within and between 4 species of the tropical marine gastropod genus Conus from Hawaii in 1979. Caloric content was measured for the somatic tissues of female cone shells and for their egg capsule masses. These data were used to calculate (1) current reproductive effort, which was the ratio of annual energy produced as spawn to the sum of the annual energy produced as spawn plus the annual energy produced as somatic tissue; and (2) weight-specific reproductive effort, which was the ratio of annual energy produced as spawn to the total energy content of the female body just before spawning. For C. pennaceus, during the approximately 10 yr of life of a female, current reproductive effort rose from about 0.35 at 2 yr to about 0.85 at 10 yr. In contrast, weight-specific reproductive effort remained relatively constant throughout life for C. pennaceus (about 0.2 to 0.5), C. abbreviatus (about 0.2 to 0.3), C. flavidus (about 0.2 to 0.3) and C. quercinus (about 0.1 to 0.2). It is suggested that weight-specific reproductive effort may be useful as an index of the selective importance of the survival cost of present reproduction, while current reproductive effort more closely reflects the selective importance of energy allocation tradeoffs. Data on the 4 species of Conus examined support the hypothesis that reproductive effort should be positively correlated with extrinsic adult mortality and negatively correlated with the variability of juvenile survivorship. The data also suggest a possible relationship between reproductive effort and the cost of parental care.  相似文献

The infratidal zonation of animals in a 35 m deep fjord-like South African estuary is described. The barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin and the bivalve Musculus virgiliae Barnard form the uppermost zone and extend to a depth of 9 m. The oyster Crassostrea margaritacea (Lam.) forms a zone between 1 and 3 m depth while the sponge Grantessa ramosa (Haeckel) occurs between 3 and 7 m. The tubiculous polychaete Mercierella enigmatica Fauvel is the only species found below 10 m, and attains a depth of 33 m. In the wet season (summer) the surface salinity dropped to 2 and temperatures rose to 24°C. In the dry season (winter) surface salinity rose to 24 and temperatures dropped to 16°C. Salinity and temperature of deep water (6 to 33 m) were more stable and varied only between 32.5 and 35 and between 19.6° and 20.5°C, respectively. In June, water below 12 m was 50 to 60% saturated with oxygen but this declined to less than 5% saturation in January.  相似文献

Although the taxonomy of deep-sea protobranch bivalves is becoming better known, relatively little information is available on their reproductive biology and whether or not populations show reproductive periodicities. We have examined the reproductive biology of three common sympatric species as part of a long-term time-series of samples taken from 2900 m in the Rockall Trough from 1973 to 1983. Malletia cuneata Jeffreys, 1876 produces a maximum of 30 oocytes at any one time and these grow to a maximum size of 240 m. Maximum fecundity of Ledella pustulosa (Jeffreys, 1876) and Yoldiella jeffreysi (Hidalgo, 1877) is 174 and 360, respectively, and both species produce an egg of 120 m in diameter. These data indicate lecithotrophic early development in L. pustulosa and Y. jeffreysi, but direct development in M. cuneata; however, evidence from the prodissoconch length of M. cuneata suggests lecithotrophic development. L. pustulosa and Y. jeffreysi also differ from M. cuneata in having a distinct reproductive cycle with spawnout in the winter months. Both the continuously breeding M. cuneata and the seasonally breeding L. pustulosa ingest diatoms, coccoliths and foraminiferans, but whereas the diet of M. cuneata appears to be constant throughout the year there is an apparent reduction in the feeding activity of L. pustulosa concomitant with the deposition of phytodetritus on the deep-sea bed.  相似文献

Changes in the protein, lipid, glycogen, cholesterol and energy contents, total amino acid and fatty acid profiles of Octopus vulgaris and O. defilippi tissues (gonad, digestive gland and muscle) during sexual maturation (spermatogenesis and oogenesis) were investigated. Both species showed an increase of amino acids and protein content in the gonad throughout sexual maturation (namely in oogenesis), but allocation of these nitrogen compounds from the digestive gland and muscle was not evident. The major essential amino acids in the three tissues were leucine, lysine and arginine. The major non-essential amino acids were glutamic acid, aspartic acid and alanine. With respect to carbon compounds, a significant increasing trend (P<0.05) in the lipid and fatty acid contents in the three tissues was observed, and, consequently, there was also little evidence of accumulated lipid storage reserves being used for egg production. It seems that for egg production both Octopus species use energy directly from food, rather than from stored products. This direct acquisition model contrasts with the previous model for Octopus vulgaris proposed by ODor and Wells (1978: J Exp Biol 77:15–31). Most of saturated fatty acid content of the three tissues was presented as 16:0 and 18:0, monounsaturated fatty acid content as 18:1 and 20:1 and polyunsaturated fatty acid content as arachidonic acid (20:4n-6), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3). Though cholesterol is an important precursor of steroid hormones, this sterol content exhibited variations that do not seem to be related with the maturation process. Moreover, significant differences (P<0.05) were obtained between genders, suggesting that perhaps there is a greater physiological demand for cholesterol during spermatogenesis than oogenesis. If the component sterols of octopus are of a dietary origin, considerable variation in the cholesterol content between species might be expected on the basis of the sterol composition of their prey. The glycogen reserves increased significantly in the gonad and decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the digestive gland and muscle of O. vulgaris (these trends were not evident in O. defilippi). Glycogen may play an important role in the maturation process and embryogenesis of these organisms, because carbohydrates are precursors of metabolic intermediates in the production of energy. It was evident that sexual maturation had a significant effect upon the gonad energy content, but the non-significant energy variation (P>0.05) in the digestive gland and muscle revealed no evidence that storage reserves are transferred from tissue to tissue. The biochemical composition of digestive gland and muscle may not be influenced by sexual maturation, but rather by other biotic factors, such as feeding activity, food availability, spawning and brooding.Communicated by S.A. This study devised a staging system for, and monitored, the gonad development of the limpet species Patella vulgata and Patella ulyssiponensis on the South West coast of Ireland using histological techniques. Maturation began in the males of both species in January and in the females it began in March. There was no statistical difference in gonad development between sexes and between species. Spawning in the male P. vulgata occurred from September to December 2003 and in September and October 2004. In female P. vulgata spawning occurred from October to December 2003, no spawning of females was observed in 2004. In male P. ulyssiponensis spawning occurred in November and December 2003 and from September 2004 to December 2004. Spawning was observed from November 2003 to January 2004 and in September 2004 in female P. ulyssiponensis. Sex ratios also varied between the species and between months sampled. Nevertheless more males were observed in both species.  相似文献

Information on the reproduction in scleractinian solitary corals and in those living in temperate zones is notably scant. Leptopsammia pruvoti is a solitary coral living in the Mediterranean Sea and along Atlantic coasts from Portugal to southern England. This coral lives in shaded habitats, from the surface to 70 m in depth, reaching population densities of >17,000 individuals m–2. In this paper, we discuss the morphological aspects of sexual reproduction in this species. In a separate paper, we report the quantitative data on the annual reproductive cycle and make an interspecific comparison of reproductive traits among Dendrophylliidae aimed at defining different reproductive strategies. The present study on L. pruvoti is the first in-depth investigation of the reproductive biology of a species of this genus. As expected for a member of the family Dendrophylliidae, L. pruvoti is a gonochoric and brooding coral. The gastrodermal tissue of the gametogenetic mesenteries we examined was swollen and granular, which led us to hypothesize that interstitial cells could have a trophic function favoring gametogenesis. Undifferentiated germ cells arose in the gastrodermis and subsequently migrated to the mesoglea, where they completed gametogenesis. During spermary development, spermary diameter increased from a minimum of 14 m during the immature stages to a maximum of 410 m during the mature stages. As oogenesis progressed, we observed a gradual reduction in the nucleus to cytoplasm ratio due to the steady synthesis of yolk. During the final stages of oogenesis, after having migrated to the extreme periphery of the oocyte and having firmly adhered to the oolemma, the nucleus became indented, assuming a sickle or dome shape. We can hypothesize that the nucleus migration and change of shape may have to do with facilitating fertilization and determining the future embryonic axis. During oogenesis, oocyte diameter increased from a minimum of 20 m during the immature stage to a maximum of 680 m when mature. Embryogenesis took place in the coelenteron. We did not see any evidence that even hinted at the formation of a blastocoel; embryonic development proceeded via stereoblastulae with superficial cleavage. Gastrulation took place by delamination. Early and late embryos had diameters of 204–724 m and 290–736 m, respectively. When released, the larvae had completed ontogenesis and swam by a ciliary movement with the aboral pole at the anterior, their shape varied from spherical to cylindrical (in the latter the oral–aboral axis measured 695–1,595 m and the transversal one measured 267–633 m).Communicated by R. Summary Hierarchies in worker dominance are well developed in reproductive workers of the Cape honeybee (Apis mellifera capensis Esch.). Elements that influence worker dominance (trophallactic behaviour, fecundity, queen substance content) are mainly genetically determined. The estimated values for the heritabilities in the broader sense range from 0.27 to 0.89. This genetically based hierarchy leads to new insight into the theory of natural selection in honeybees. Besides selection at the colony level, or selection at the level of reproductives, natural selection also operates at the level of the individual worker bee within a colony.  相似文献

The nutrient status (limitation vs sufficiency) of dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) symbiotic with reef corals in Bermuda was assessed in 1989 and 1990 by measuring the enhancement of dark carbon fixation with 20 M ammonium by isolated symbionts. A colony ofMadracis mirabilis was kept in the laboratory and fed daily or starved for one month. Symbionts from fed portions of the colony had ammonium-enhancement ratios (NH 4dark + ; SWdark;SW=seawater without added ammonium) similar to those of the original field population (1.2 to 1.3). Ammonium-enhancement ratios increased with starvation of the host (x1.7) as did values forV D:V L [(ammonium dark rate-seawater dark rate): light rate in seawater]. Both parameters indicated decreasing nitrogen sufficiency of the algae when the host was not fed, but starvation appeared to affect these algae less than symbionts of sea anemones. Field samples of zooxanthellae fromM. mirabilis (Three Hill Shoals and Bailey's Bay Flats) yielded results similar to those for fed corals, but those taken from Bailey's Bay Flats in May 1990 yielded exceptionally high values for enhancement (>3) andV D:V L indicating pronounced nitrogen limitation at the time of sampling. We sampled zooxanthellae from populations ofMontastrea annularis at 8 m (Three Hill Shoals) and 24 m (Soldier's Point) depths. Enhancement andV D:V L values for zooxanthellae from the 8 m corals were density-dependent: symbionts from corals with normal symbiont densities displayed the most nitrogen limitation (enhancement values=1.4 to 2.0), while those from bleached corals with lower density exhibited enhancement andV D:V L values typical of nitrogen-sufficient algae. Symbionts isolated from the 25 m corals yielded the highest values, and appeared to exhibit the least nitrogen-sufficiency for this species.  相似文献

The structure of the reproductive system in Copepodite Stages IV and V of the marine copepod Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) is described, together with seasonal variations in gonad development and sex ratio, from Balsfjorden (69°21N; 19°06E), a subarctic fjord in northern Norway. The genital system in Copepodite Stage IV consists of a small gonad with two genital ducts. The gonad of Copepodite Stage V in its most immature condition resembles that seen in Copepodite Stage IV, whereas the sex of Stage V copepodites with mature gonads can be easily and reliably determined. The genital ducts are the key characters for separating males and females in Copepodite Stage V; potential males have one and potential females two genital ducts connecting the gonad to the genital opening on the first urosome segment. Adults males were rare compared to females, and were only in the majority at the end of January and beginning of February. The sex-ratio also favoured females in Copepodite Stage V. Seasonal peaks in the proportion of adult males reflected peaks of males in Copepodite Stage V, suggesting that seasonal variations in the adult sex-ratio are a direct result of a situation which has already been determined in Copepodite Stage V. The seasonal variation in gonad development in Copepodite Stages IV and V of C. finmarchicus reveals that the size of maturity of the gonad varies throughout the year. This study indicates that visible sex-differentiation in Stage V and moulting into adults occurs in Balsfjorden at least 2 months before spawning in April. Phytoplankton levels are immeasurable before the spring diatom increase starts at the end of March, implying that development and maturation of gonads are dependent upon internal energy resources, whereas the final act of spawning seems to require energy input from phytoplankton.  相似文献

Mass individual pairing or pseudo-copulation of the sea star Archaster angulatus was observed in November and December 2009, suggesting a late-spring/summer spawning period for this species on the west coast of Australia. Detailed measurements were made on the second of these occasions. Density of sea stars was 1.11 per m2 and 68.5% were in mating pairs. Copulating pairs were mostly male on female, occasionally male on male. There was no difference in size between males and females in mating pairs. No evidence was found to indicate mating and spawning is coincident with lunar or tidal cycles. Females outnumbered males by more than 20%, but the difference in sex ratio was not statistically significant. Analysis of the reproductive cycle revealed that gonad indices reached their peak in October and declined from then until January. Histological sections of gonads confirmed that sea stars are in peak reproductive condition in October and November and are fully spent by January. Males have a much lower (ca. 1/3rd) gonad index than females when each are in peak reproductive condition, the second lowest recorded for any sea star. Pyloric caecae indices showed little annual variation and monthly averages of just 3–4% are among the lowest ever recorded for an asteroid. It is suggested that these characteristics are associated with the copulatory behaviour of the deposit feeding A. angulatus, enabling the species to maintain a high level of fertilisation success while also minimising the allocation of energy to gonad development in habitats with low or variable food availability. However, it is still difficult to explain why a species which ensures a high level of fertilisation by pseudo-copulation also does this en masse and synchronously. One hypothesis is that competition for males and the benefits of having eggs fertilised by multiple males favours both synchrony and aggregation.  相似文献

Summary We estimated reproductive effort (energy expenditures for reproduction, as opposed to maintenance) in Adélie penguins breeding at Palmer Station, Antarctica. Data on body composition changes and metabolic rate were obtained using isotopic methods. Adelie breeding behavior consists of an initial courtship stage (during which both sexes fast), incubation, the guard stage (when chicks are 1 to 18–28 days old), and the creche stage (from the end of guarding until chicks are 28–45 days old). Both males and females lost considerable mass during the initial stages of the reproductive season, but males fasted longer and lost more mass. Mass losses of both sexes consisted of 66% depot fat and 34% lean tissue. Mass and body composition remained constant once birds resumed feeding. The metabolic expenditure for the foraging necessary to accumulate the mass lost while fasting — one component of reproductive effort —was about 63 MJ in males and 39 MJ in females. Field metabolic rates (FMR) were low during courtship and while incubating, increasing more than 2-fold when birds resumed foraging. Although mean FMR increased between incubation and the creche stage, differences between stages were small and not significant. We used FMR data and an energy balance model to estimate the cost of feeding chicks. Results suggest a maintenance FMR of about 2.7 × basal metabolism (BMR), increasing to 3.4–3.6 × BMR during the creche stage. The reproductive effort (as metabolic expenditures) associated with feeding chicks is 31 MJ (males) to 36 MJ (females). Cumulative reproductive effort is 94 MJ in males and 75 MJ in females, or 5.3–6.2% of the annual energy budget. The reproductive effort devoted to chick care does not appear to be constrained by physiological or time limitations. This paper contributes to the understanding of the evolution of alternative mating strategies by comparing morphological, ecological and ethological aspects of the reproductive systems of two closely related fish species studied near the marine biological station STARESO at Calvi, Corsica, between March 1982 and May 1985. The Mediterranean breeding areas of Tripterygion tripteronotus and T. delaisi partly overlap. The red territorial males of T. tripteronotus defend territories in the upper 6 m of the water column and the yellow territorial males of T. delaisi breed between a depth of 3 and 40 m. Small male T. tripteronotus possess relatively large gonads exhibit sneaking behaviour, while small male T. delaisi do not participate in mating. T. tripteronotus expends more effort in reproduction than T. delaisi. This is expressed in larger gonads, a higher density of and stronger competition for nest sites, and a longer breeding season and shorter spawning bouts with a higher fertilization rate in the former species. We hypothesize that the sneaking strategy of non-territorial male T. tripteronotus evolved in response to competition for nest sites in the shallow, upper water layers, which are limited in depth, but contain a good food supply. The depth restriction is imposed by the light-reflecting properties of the red territorial males. Reproductive effort in terms of fecundity and energy allocation was studied in Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci, 1962 a small, semicontinuous iteroparous species. In O. labronica fecundity is more or less constant throughout life, and the total fecundity of the 64 couples examined in this experiment only declined by 12% from the first to the last spawning. No linear relationship was found between fecundity and body size.␣The energy content of germinal and somatic tissues was determined by differential scanning calorimeter. The␣reproductive effort and a reproductive index based on the fifth spawning were evaluated to compare the␣patterns of energy allocation of a semicontinuous iteroparous species with semelparous and annual iteroparous species. The reproductive index ranged from 0.20 to 0.77, with an average of 0.480. The average reproductive effort was 0.840, ranging from 0.60 to 0.96.
