The vertical distribution, diel gut pigment content and oxygen consumption of Calanus euxinus were studied in April and September 1995 in the Black Sea. Gut pigment content of C. euxinus females was associated with diel vertical migration of the individuals, and it varied with depth and time. Highest gut pigment content was observed during the nighttime, when females were in the chlorophyll a (chl a) rich surface waters, but significant feeding also occurred in the deep layer. Gut pigment content throughout the water column varied from 0.8 to 22.0 ng pigment female–1 in April and from 0.2 to 21 ng pigment female–1 in September 1995. From the diel vertical migration pattern, it was estimated that female C. euxinus spend 7.5 h day–1 in April and 10.5 h day–1 in September in the chl a rich surface waters. Daily consumption by female C. euxinus in chl a rich surface waters was estimated by taking into account the feeding duration and gut pigment concentrations. Daily carbon rations of female C. euxinus, derived from herbivorous feeding in the euphotic zone, ranged from 6% to 11% of their body carbon weight in April and from 15% to 35% in September. Oxygen consumption rates of female and copepodite stage V (CV) C. euxinus were measured at different temperatures and at different oxygen concentrations. Oxygen consumption rates at oxygen-saturated concentration ranged from an average of 0.67 g O2 mg–1 dry weight (DW) h–1 at 5°C to 2.1 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for females, and ranged from 0.48 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 5°C to 1.5 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for CVs. The rate of oxygen consumption at 16°C varied from 0.62 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.65 mg O2 l–1 to 1.57 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.35 mg O2 l–1 for CVs, and from 0.74 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.57 mg O2 l–1 to 2.24 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.37 mg O2 l–1 for females. From the oxygen consumption rates, daily requirements for the routine metabolism of females were estimated, and our results indicate that the herbivorous daily ration was sufficient to meet the routine metabolic requirements of female C. euxinus in April and September in the Black Sea.Communicated by O. Acute toxicity of ammonia was determined for cultured larval, postlarval, and wild adult lobsters (Homarus americanus) in 1988. Ammonia tolerance was found to increase with ontogenetic development. Based on 96-h LC50 values of 58 mg l–1 NH4 + + NH3 l–1 seawater (0.72 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage I larvae, 87 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (1.7 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage II larvae, 125 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (2.13 mg NH3) for Stage III larvae, 144 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (2.36 mg NH3 l–1) for Stage IV postlarvae, 377 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (5.12 mg NH3 l–1) for adult lobsters at 5°C and 219 mg NH4 + + NH3 l–1 (3.25 mg NH3 l–1) for adult lobsters at 20°C, recommendations for safe levels of total ammonia and un-ionized ammonia were calculated using an application factor of 0.1. Effects of ammonia on osmoregulatory capacity were studied on postlarvae and adults. Ability of postlarvae and adults to hyper-regulate in low-salinity media decreased after exposure to ammonia. In postlarval lobsters, osmoregulatory capacity was significantly affected in ammonia concentrations exceeding 32 mg l–1. Osmoregulatory capacity in adult lobsters (5 and 20°C) was affected at 150 mg l–1. In postlarval lobsters, a minimum exposure time of 12 h was required to impair osmoregulatory capacity. The decrease in hemolymph osmotic pressure was caused by lower hemolymph sodium concentrations. The presence of ammonia in the external medium could markedly affect the Na+/NH4 + transport mechanism by permanently, temporarily, or partially impairing the transport sites for sodium.  相似文献

Suspension-feeding bivalves increase the quantity and quality of sedimenting organic matter through the production of faeces and pseudofaeces that are remineralised in coastal sediments and thus increase sediment oxygen demand and nutrient regeneration. Bivalves are intensively cultivated worldwide; however, no bivalve biodeposit decay rates are available to parameterise models describing the environmental effects of bivalve culture. We examined sediment biogeochemical changes as bivalve biodeposits age by incubating coastal sediments to which we added fresh mussel (Perna canaliculus) biodeposits and measured O2 and nutrient fluxes as well as sediment characteristics over an 11-day period. Biodeposits elevated organic matter, chlorophyll a, phaeophytin a, organic carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the surface sediments. Sediment oxygen consumption (SOC) increased significantly (P=0.016) by ∼1.5 times to 1,010 μmol m−2 h−1 immediately after biodeposit addition and remained elevated compared to control cores without additions for the incubation period. This increase is in the range of observed in situ oxygen demand enhancements under mussel farms. To calculate a decay rate for biodeposits in sediments we fitted a first-order G model to the observed increase in SOC. The significant model fit (P=0.001, r 2=0.72) generated a decay rate of 0.16 day−1 (P=0.033, SE=0.05) that corresponds to a half-life time of 4.3 day. This decay rate is 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than published decay rates of coastal sediments without organic enrichment but similar to rates of decaying zooplankton faecal pellets. NH4+ release increased rapidly on the day of biodeposit addition (P=0.013) and reached a maximum of 144 μmol m−2 h−1 after 5 days which was 3.6 times higher compared to control cores. During this period NH4+ release was significantly (P<0.001 to P=0.043) higher in the cores with biodeposit additions than in control cores.  相似文献

Automatic potentiometric determination of dissolved oxygen   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Commercially available automatic titration systems were tested in 1988 for potentiometric titration of liberated iodine by the Winkler method of oxygen determination. The potentiometric equivalence point was also compared to the manual starch end point. Finally the automatic method was used in order to estimate belowhalocline respiration in the Kattegat, Sweden. Standard deviations of 0.007 ml O2 l–1 or 0.1 to 0.3% coefficients of variation (% standard deviation of the mean) were achieved when titrating 25 ml from replicate 60-ml oxygen bottles using the automatic method, or 50 ml manually. The precision for replicate titrations of 50-ml aliquots of 0.001N KIO3 was <0.05% (0.002 ml 0.01N Na2S2O3) for the automatic method. Titration time for 25-ml aliquots was 2 to 4 min, somewhat longer than for manual titrations (1 to 1.5 min). However, during titration the operator is free to perform other tasks. It is not possible to use automatic sample changers, due to rapid iodine volatilization. The equipment can be handled by relatively unskilled analysts and is suitable for use on board research vessels or in field stations [weight for a MettlerTM titrator (Mettler Instrumente AG, Greifensee, Switzerland) <10 kg, volume <0.1 m3]. Below-halocline oxygen consumption in the SE Kattegat ranged from 0 to 6 ml O2 m–3 h–1 (mean values for September and October 1988=1.69 and 0.66 ml O2 m–3 h–1, respectively, with 95% confidence limits of ca. ±0.6 ml O2 m–3 h–1).  相似文献

The dissolved nitrogen pool in aquatic systems is comprised of many different nitrogen forms, both inorganic and organic. Interaction among these nitrogen forms at the level of uptake and enzyme activity is, with the exception of NH4+ and NO3, not completely understood. Nitrate reductase (NR) and urease (UA) activities in the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell et Hasle were measured in NO3, NH4+, and urea-sufficient cultures before and after challenge additions of NH4+, NO3, and urea in a factorial design. NR and UA were constitutively expressed during growth on NO3, NH4+, and urea. Growth on NH4+ or urea resulted in NR activities that were <10% of the activity observed in the NO3-grown culture, while growth on NO3 resulted in UA values that were ~35% of the activities during growth on either NH4+ or urea. The addition of NH4+ or urea to NO3-grown cultures resulted in an immediate decrease in cellular NO3 uptake rate, which was not mirrored by an immediate repression of in vitro NR activity; however, the diel peak in NR was suppressed in these challenge experiments. The addition of NO3 or NH4+ to urea-grown cultures resulted in non-significant decreases in the urea uptake rate. UA was not impacted by NO3 addition, but NH4+ addition significantly decreased UA throughout the experiment. These studies demonstrate that the uptake and assimilation of NO3 and urea may not be subject to the same internal feedback mechanism when challenged with other nitrogen substrates.Communicated by J.P. Rates of oxygen consumption were measured for embryos, larvae and juveniles of the seastar Mediaster aequalis for 76 days post-fertilization. The rate increased from 0.65 nmol O2 ind–1 h–1 at 6 h after fertilization to 2.8 nmol O2 ind–1 h–1 at day 35. Larvae became competent to metamorphose around day 35 post-fertilization and began to decrease their metabolic rate after this time. Metamorphosed juveniles consumed 0.74 nmol O2 ind–1 h–1. Eggs contained 138.6 µg lipid ind–1 and 12.1 µg protein ind–1. Lipid levels decreased in concentration throughout development while protein levels increased slightly. The lipid levels decreased by 88.5 µg from eggs to day 76 larvae, accounting for 3.5 J of energy. Total oxygen consumption to this point was 3.74 µmol O2 ind–1, accounting for 1.84 J. The energetic demand up to day 76 was met completely through the use of lipid reserves. Metamorphosed juveniles expended 0.5 J more than larvae at the same age. Tubes of the polychaete Phyllochaetopterus prolifica were able to induce metamorphosis in M. aequalis larvae and a non-polar extract of these tubes also triggered metamorphosis. Larvae that are delayed to metamorphose can sustain their metabolic rate with lipid reserves for a limited, yet undetermined, period.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

Constructing realistic energy budgets for Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, is hampered by the lack of data on the metabolic costs associated with swimming. In this study respiration rates and pleopod beating rates were measured at six current speeds. Pleopod beating rates increased linearly with current speed, reaching a maximum of 6 beats s–1 at 17 cm s–1. There was a concomitant linear increase in respiration rate, from 1.8 mg O2 gD–1 h–1 at 3 cm s–1 to 8.0 mg O2 gD–1 h–1 at 17 cm s–1. The size of the group tested (50, 100 and 300 krill) did not have a significant effect on pleopod beating rates or oxygen consumption (ANCOVA, F=0.264; P>0.05). The cost of transport reached a maximum of 75 J g–1 km–1 at 5 cm s–1, and then decreased with increasing current speed to 29 J g–1 km–1. When considered in light of energy budgets for E. superba, these data indicate that the cost of swimming could account for up to 73% of total daily metabolic expenditure during early summer.Communicated by G.F. Ocean sequestration of CO2 is proposed as a possible measure to mitigate environmental changes due to the increasing atmospheric concentration of the gas. However, toxic effects of CO2 on marine organisms are poorly understood. We therefore studied acid–base responses and mortality during exposure to fatal levels of CO2 in three marine fishes (Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus; yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata; and starspotted dogfish, Mustelus manazo). The teleosts died during exposure to seawater equilibrated with a gas mixture containing 5% CO2 (water PCO2 4.95 kPa); 100% mortality occurred within 8 h for yellowtail and within 48 h for flounder. Only 20% mortality was recorded at 72 h for the dogfish during exposure to 7% CO2 (water PCO2 6.96 kPa). Arterial pH (pHa) initially decreased, but completely recovered within 1–24 h for the teleosts at 1% and 3%, although the recovery was slower and complete only at 1% (water PCO2 0.99 kPa) for the dogfish. During exposure to 5%, the flounder died after the pHa had been completely restored, suggesting that the mortality was not due to plasma acidosis. During exposure to 1% hypercapnia, plasma [Cl] appeared to be the main counter ion to balance increases in plasma [HCO3-]. There was a 1:1 stoichiometry for the rise in [HCO3-] and the fall in [Cl] for the teleosts, whereas the ratio was 1:0.4 for the dogfish at 1% CO2. At the higher levels of hypercapnia, the rise in [HCO3-] consistently exceeded the fall in [Cl], and plasma [Na+] significantly increased. These results do not agree with the generally accepted model for acid–base regulation in marine fish in which Na+/H+ exchangers are assumed to play a predominant role, and indicate that an acid–base regulatory mechanism differs between teleost and elasmobranch fishes, as well as the intensity of acidic stress.Communicated by T. The photosynthesis–irradiance response of Ecklonia radiata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, a common kelp in the temperate southern hemisphere, was investigated in situ throughout the year and across a depth profile at West Island, South Australia. Temperature and irradiance environment altered throughout the year, varying at 3 m between 14–20°C and 279–705 mol photons m–2 s–1. Photosynthetic capacity (Pm) varied throughout the year between 177–278 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 3 m and 133–348 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 10 m. The irradiance required for sub-saturation of photosynthesis (Ek) varied between 97–152 and 81–142 mol photons m–2 s–1 for 3 m and 10 m respectively, and the respiration rate varied between 15–36 and 13–20 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 for 3 m and 10 m. A clear seasonal change in photokinetic parameters was detected and provided strong evidence for a seasonal acclimation response. During winter an increase in the efficiency of light utilisation at low irradiance () was accompanied by a decrease in both Ek and that required for photosynthetic compensation. Pm also increased during the winter and autumn months and respiratory requirements decreased. These changes enable E. radiata to display an optimal photosynthetic performance throughout the year despite significant changes in the surrounding environment.Communicated by P.W. Effect of algal bloom deposition on sediment respiration and fluxes   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Using sediment cores collected in November 1989 from Aarhus Bight, Denmark, the fluxes of O2, CO2 (total CO2), NH 4 + , NO 3 +NO 2 and DON (dissolved organic nitrogen) across the sediment-water interface were followed for 20 d in an experimental continous flow system. On day 7, phytoplankton was added to the sediment surface, to see the result of simulated algal bloom sedimentation. Benthic O2 consumption and CO2 efflux, 38 to 41 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 and 25 to 30 mmol CO2 m-2 d-1, respectively, immediately increased by 39% and 100% after the algal addition, but gradually declined to the orginal level. Fluxes of NH 4 + (1.0 to 1.2 mmol m-2 d-1) and DON (0.3 to 0.9 mmol m-2 d-1) increased due to the organic substrate addition. NH 4 + and NO 3 flux changed direction, becoming an efflux and influx, respectively, for a few days and a large amount of DON (max. rate 4.0 mmol m-2 d-1) was immediately produced either by bacterial hydrolytic activity or from autolysis of the algae. DON was the most significant nitrogen component in pore water and in terms of N-flux from sediment. A temporary stimulation of anaerobic respiration processes (sulfate reduction and denitrification) and a decrease in nitrification were indicated. After the effect of the organic addition had declined, the fluxes gradually reverted to the original rates. The halflife of the added algal material, of which 20 to 30% was very labile, was estimated to be 2 to 3 wk.  相似文献

Photosynthetic properties of the common red algaGracilaria conferta, collected from the eastern Mediterranean Sea were investigated in 1989, in order to begin evaluating its adaptative strategies with regard to the inorganic carbon composition of seawater, and to test whether the alleged C4 photosynthesis of anotherGracilaria species is common within the genus. Net photosynthetic rates ofG. conferta were, under ambient conditions of inorganic carbon (ca. 10µM, CO2 and 2.2 mM HCO 3 - ), not sensitive to O2 over the range 10 to 300µM, and the CO2 compensation point was low (ca. 0.005µM). Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase was the major carboxylating enzyme, with a crude extract activity of 175µmol CO2 g–1 fresh wt h–1 while phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase were present at 70 and 20%, respectively, of that activity. No activities of the decarboxylases NAD-and NADP-malic enzyme could be detected. The14C pulse-chase incorporation pattern showed thatG. conferta fixes inorganic carbon via the photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle only, with no evidence for photosynthetic C4 acid metabolism. Photosynthesis at the natural seawater pH of 8.2 was, at 25°C and saturating light, saturated at the ambient inorganic carbon concentration of 2.5 mM. It is proposed that, under ambient inorganic carbon conditions, a CO2 concentrating system other than C4 metabolism provides an internal CO2 concentration sufficient to suppress the O2 effect on ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase and, thus, on photorespiration, in a medium where the external free CO2 concentration is lower than theK m(CO2) of the carboxylating enzyme. Since inorganic carbon, under natural saturating light conditions, seems not to be a limiting factor for photosynthesis ofG. conferta, it likely follows that other nutrients limit the growth of this alga in nature.  相似文献

Excretion of total CO2 and uptake of sodium and chloride ions across the branchial epithelium of the posterior gills of the shore crabCarcinus maenas, collected from Kiel Bay (Baltic Sea) in 1989, were measured using isolated perfused gill preparations. Total CO2 effluxes depended on the HCO 3 - concentration of the internal perfusate in a saturable mode and were inhibited by internally and externally applied acetazolamide at 10–4 M. Potential differences between hemolymph space and medium did not change significantly during experimental treatments. Neither a bicarbonate gradient (6 mM) directed from the internal perfusate to external bath solution nor symmetrically applied 10–4 M acetazolamide significantly influenced the influxes of Na+ and Cl. Results confirmed the role of carbonic anhydrase in CO2 excretion but called into question the assumed functioning of the enzyme in branchial ion transport processes.  相似文献

On the eastern shore of Nova Scotia late summer atmospheric systems cause upwelling of shelf water; the associated temperature variations of 10 °C with a 6 to 8 d period are comparable in magnitude to the seasonal variation. A laboratory study was undertaken to assess the effects of these temperature fluctuations on sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) growth and metabolism. In a factorial design, scallops were subjected to constant (10 °C) or a variable (6 to 15 °C) 8 d temperature cycle, and either a low (seston in filtered seawater) or high (seston supplemented with cultured phytoplankton) food diet. During the 48 d experiment scallop mortality was low and growth positive in all treatments. Shell and total tissue growth rate did not differ between temperature treatments, but growth in the high food treatments was 40 to 50% higher than in the low food treatments. However, soft tissue (excluding adductor) growth did show a temperature treatment effect; growth rates were significantly higher in the fluctuating temperature treatment, due in part to greater gonad development. Weight-standardized rates of scallop oxygen consumption (V sO2 , μmol O2 g−1 h−1) were 20 to 25% higher in high food than in low food treatments, consistent with the expected increase in respiration due to the higher growth rates. Scallop metabolism did not acclimate to the fluctuating temperature cycle; V sO2 and ammonium excretion (V sNH+ 4, μmol O2 g−1 h−1) remained dependent on ambient temperature throughout the experiment. V sNH+ 4 Q10 (2.77) was higher than V sO2 Q10 (2.01) which was reflected in a decrease in the O:N ratio at 15 °C, indicating a shift toward increased protein catabolism and a stressed state. At 10 °C, V sO2 and V sNH+ 4 in the variable temperature treatments were 15 to 18% lower than in the constant temperature treatments, a difference that was not detected in growth measurements. Results demonstrate that the metabolism of Placopecten magellanicus, unlike some bivalve species, is tightly coupled to fluctuations in ambient temperature. Although an absence of compensatory acclimation had a minimal effect on growth in this study, if high temperatures were combined with low food conditions a reduction in scallop production could result. In Penaeus japonicus, the tolerance to ammonia increased with the development from nauplius to late juvenile. The 48-h LC50 of ammonia in nauplii (III–V), 96-h LC50 in zoeae (I–III), mysis (I–III), post-larvae (PL1) and late juveniles (10.4±1.1 g) were respectively 5.0, 6.1 to 8.1, 9.4 to 10.9, 15.5 and 52.7 mg Nl-1 (0.5, 0.6 to 0.7, 0.9, 1.3 and 3.1 mg NH3–Nl-1). In a chronic experiment (20 d), the LC50 in post-larvae (PL1) was 19.1 (1.4) at 96 h and 16.2 mg Nl-1 (1.3 mg NH3–Nl-1) at 480 h. Osmoregulatory capacity (OC) was calculated as the osmotic gradient between the hemolymph and the external medium at given salinities. The effects of ammonia on OC, Na+ and Cl- regulation and gill Na+–K+ ATPase activity in late juveniles were examined in fullstrength seawater, SW (1050 mosm kg-1, 36 S) and in dilute SW (450 mosm kg-1, 15%.), after 48 or 96 h exposure to various concentrations of ammonia. Ambient ammonia disrupted both hypo- and hyper-osmoregulation; decreased OC resulted from impaired Na+ and Cl- regulation. Gill Na+–K+ ATPase activity increased in SW and was not affected in dilute SW. The decrease of OC was ammonia-dose-dependent. The threshold ammonia concentrations affecting hypo-OC and hyper-OC were, respectively, 16 (1.3) and 32 mg Nl-1 (2.3 NH3–Nl-1) for a 48 h exposure; these concentrations were lower than the 48-h LC50 value, 65.3 mg Nl-1 (3.5 NH3–Nl-1). The time course of exposure to sublethal ammonia (48 mg Nl-1) demonstrated that the effect on osmoregulation was time-dependent. This effect was also temporary, and the exposed shrimps recovered control OC values after removal of excessive ambient ammonia. The possibility of using OC as an indicator of physiological condition in osmoregulating crustaceans and the acting mode of ammonia on osmotic and ionic regulation are discussed.  相似文献

Growth and herbivory of heterotrophic dinoflagellates (Gymnodinium sp.) from the Weddell Sea and the Weddell/Scotia Confluence were studied in 1988 in 100-liter microcosms. The microcosms were screened through 200-µm or 20-µm mesh nets and incubated for 12 d at 1 °C under artificial light. Mean cell volume of dinoflagellates was 1 000 to 1 500µm3, and that of their phytoplankton prey 360 to 430µm3. Dinoflagellate growth rate followed a Holling type II functional response, with a maximum growth rate of 0.3 d–1 and half-saturation food concentrations of 1.0µg chlorophylla l–1, 50µg C l–1, or 1 500 cells ml–1. Carbon budgets based on14CO2 assimilation and biomasses of phytoplankton and heterotrophic dinoflagellates suggested a balance between phytoplankton grazing loss and dinoflagellate consumption, assuming a dinoflagellate carbon conversion efficiency of 40%. Applying this to the functional response yielded estimates of maximum ingestion rate (0.8µg Cµg–1 C d–1, or 6 pg C dinoflagellate–1 h–1) and maximum clearance (0.8 to 1.2 × 105 body volumes h–1, or 80 to 120 nl ind.–1 h–1). The microcosm experiments suggested that heterotrophic dinoflagellates may contribute significantly to maintenance of low phytoplankton biomass in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Metabolic rates of the ctenophore Beroe ovata within the length range from 0.4 mm (newly hatched larvae) to 60 mm were investigated. At 20° the respiration rates (Q, µg O2 ind.–1 h–1) of individuals with wet weights (W, mg) less than or greater than 100 mg changed according to the equations Q=0.093W0.62 and Q=0.016W0.99, respectively. The weight-specific respiration rate of the juvenile ctenophores with wet body weights of 0.021–100 mg diminished approximately 20-fold (from 0.35 to 0.017 µg O2 mg–1 h–1, respectively), but did not change within the range from 100 to 30,000 mg. The difference in the slope of the regression lines seems to be attributable to the ontogenetic changes in B. ovata metabolism. For the tested temperature range of 10–28°, the mean Q10 coefficient was equal to 2.17±0.5. The basal metabolism of B. ovata narcotised by chloral hydrate was 4.5±0.9 times lower than total metabolism. Such a metabolic range is considered to be characteristic of aquatic invertebrates with high levels of locomotory activity.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Characterisation of the leachate originating from the Ano Liosia landfill (situated in Attica region, Greece) as well as assessment on the quality of the local aquifer were carried out. The experimental results showed that most of the parameters examined in the leachate samples such as colour, conductivity, TS, COD, NH3–N, PO4–P, SO4 2–, Cl, K+, Fe and Pb were found in high levels. The organic load was quite high since the COD concentrations were in the range of 3250–6125mgL–1. In addition, the low BOD/COD ratio (0.096–0.195), confirmed that the majority of this organic matter is not easily biodegradable. The groundwater near the landfill site was characterised as not potable and not suitable for irrigation water, since most of the physical and chemical parameters examined – such as colour, conductivity, DS, hardness, Cl, NH3–N, COD, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Fe, Ni and Pb exceeded the permissible limits given by EE, EPA and the Greek Ministry of Agriculture. Furthermore, this study presents the application of the hydrologic evaluation of landfill performance (HELP) model for the determination of the yearly leakage from the base of the landfill after the final capping.  相似文献

This investigation was carried out to determine the hydrogeochemical characteristics of the Kirkgeçit and Ozancik hot springs. The study areas are located northeast and southwest of the town of Çan, Çanakkale. During the investigation, geological maps of the hot springs and its surroundings were prepared, and hot waters and rock samples were collected from the study sites. The Paleogene–Neogene aged andesite, trachyandesite, andesitic tuff, silicified tuff and tuffites form the basement rocks in the Ozancik hot spring area. In the Kirkgeçit hot spring area, there are Lower Triassic aged mica and quartz schists at the basement rocks. The unit is covered by limestones and marbles of the same age. They are overlain by Quaternary alluvial deposits. A chemical analysis of the Kirkgeçit hot water indicates that it is rich in SO4 2– (1200.2 mg L–1), Cl (121.7 mg L–1), HCO3 (32.5 mg L–1), Na+ (494 mg L–1), K+ (30.2 mg L–1), Ca2+ (102 mg L–1), Mg2+ (15.2 mg L–1), and SiO2 (65.22 mg L–1). Chemical analysis of the Ozancik hot water indicates that it is rich in SO4 2– (575 mg L–1), Cl (193.2 mg L–1), HCO3 (98.5 mg L–1), Na+ (315 mg L–1), K+(7.248 mg L–1), Ca2+ (103 mg L–1), Mg2+ (0.274 mg L–1), and SiO2(43.20 mg L–1). The distribution of ions in the hot waters on the Schoeller diagram has an arrangement of r(Na++K+)>rCa2+>rMg2+ and r(SO4 2–)>rCl>r(HCO3 ). In addition, the inclusion of Fe2+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Ni2+ and Hg2+ in the hot water samples indicates potential natural inorganic contamination. The water analysis carried out following the ICPMS-200 technique was evaluated according to the World Health Organisation and Turkish Standards. The use and the effects of the hot water on human health are also discussed in the paper.  相似文献

The nature of protein catabolism in a wide range of species of midwater zooplankton was investigated. The weight-specific ammonia excretion rates (g NH3–N g–1 dry wt h–1, y) decline exponentially with minimum depth of occurreece (MDO, x), y=163.4 x–0.479±0.212 (95%ci) (CI=confidence interval), when temperature is held constant. The change in ammonia excretion can be partially explained by the decrease in percent protein (%P) with MDO, %P=80.17 MDO–0.148±0.122 (95%ci) The atomic O:N ratio of freshly caught zooplankters ranged from 9.1 to 91, with most measurements between 9 and 25. Detailed studies were carried out on the response of one of the species studied (Gnathophausia ingens) to starvation (28 d). After 14 d of starvation the average ammonia excretion rate declined by more than 75% to less than 1 g NH3–N g–1 wet wt h–1, although the average oxygen consumption declined by only 13% within the first 7 d of starvation and then remained stable. This differential response of oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion to starvation resulted in an increase in the average O:N ratio of starved animals from an initial 33 to 165 after 21 d. The average O:N ratios of fed mysids remained below 38 during the experiment. G. ingens maintains a relatively uniform metabolic rate during starvation by relying more heavily on its large lipid stores than when being fed.  相似文献

A field project encompassing wet-only rainwater sampling was initiated as a bilateral Fiji/Australia activity. Normally, biweekly samples were collected, using a wet-only rainwater sampler, and analysed for H+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, NH4 +, Cl, NO3 , SO4 2–, PO4 3-, methane sulphonic acid, oxalic acid, formic acid and acetic acid. The pH of the rainwater ranged between 5.730 and 4.480 with an average value of 5.176, slightly lower than the pH of unpolluted rainwater saturated with atmospheric CO2(pH = 5.650). Na+and Clwere the major ions with average concentrations of 98.15 M and 109.57 M respectively. There is an excellent correlation between the cation sum (average 147.71 eq L-1) and the anion sum (average 142.12 eq L-1) attesting to the quality of the data generated. This paper presents the detailed results of the study for a relatively clean remote island site in Suva, Fiji, latitude 18° 09 S, longitude 178° 27 E, height 6 m, and outlines prospects for further work.  相似文献
