The indoor-outdoor concentration relationship of particulate matter PM9.0 (aerodynamic diameter 9 μm or smaller) and its chemical composition (sulfate, nitrate, chloride and ammonium) has been studied. Samples were collected using four identical Anderson impactors, each one collecting nine size ranges by eight impactor stages (9, 5.8, 4.7, 3.3, 2.1, 1.1, 0.65 and 0.43 μm) plus a back-up filter representing particles finer than 0.45 μm. Concentrations of sulfate, nitrate and chloride were determined by ion chromatography, and an ammonium-selective ion electrode plus a Corning pH ion meter were used to determine ammonium ion. The results revealed that sulfate was the predominant component and chloride the least abundant. The size distribution of sulfate, nitrate and ammonium very strongly peaked near 0.65 μm and with very little at the larger sizes. The chloride concentration was depleted in the fine particles and enhanced in the relatively coarser particles, with the peak at 3.3 μm. All these concentrations had a significant linear relationship with mass concentrations in outdoor samples. In indoor samples, the same relation was observed only for sulfate and ammonium, which were also significantly correlated with each other. Furthermore, indoor sulfate, chloride and ammonium concentrations were higher towards the finest particle sizes, indicating a higher potential inhalation health hazard. The study also confirmed that indoor air quality depends on outdoor atmospheric pollution level, indoor activities and virtually on the particle size. Finally, the study would assist in selecting the type of collector required to reduce the level of particulates to an acceptable level for indoor ambient air.  相似文献

The National Air Surveillance Network (NASN) has collected samples of suspended particulate matter since 1957. These data values are graphically summarized by the application of Whittaker-Henderson Type A curve-smoothing formulas to 10 years of data. Fifty-eight urban sites and 20 nonurban sites are studied by this technique, which permits an intuitive grasp of the underlying cyclical patterns as well as long-term trends in nationwide levels of suspended particulate matter. Seasonal patterns are evident for many urban and nonurban sites, although sharp contrasts in seasonal characteristics exist between the two types of sites. Long-term levels tend slightly downward at many urban locations, but the opposite effect is observed at many nonurban sites.  相似文献

A comparison of the concentration of the total suspended particulate (TSP) matter measured by the tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) monitor and the isokinetic TSP samplers developed at the University of Illinois was carried out in several types of confinement livestock buildings. In a majority of the measurements done, the dust concentration measured by the TEOM monitor was lower than the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) isokinetic TSP sampler; the TEOM monitor tended to underestimate the total dust concentration by as much as 54%. The difference in measurements can be attributed to the sampling efficiency of the TEOM monitor sampling head and the loss of some semivolatile compounds and particle-bound water because of heating of the TEOM monitor sampling stream to 50 degrees C. Although several articles in the literature supported the latter argument, this study did not investigate the effect of heating the sampling stream or the effect of moisture on the relative difference in dust concentration measurements. The model that best describes the relationship between the two methods was site specific, that is, the linear regression model was applicable only to four of the sites monitored. The measured total dust concentration in livestock buildings range from approximately 300 to 4000 microg/m3; a higher correlation coefficient between TEOM-TSP and UIUC-TSP monitors was obtained in swine facilities than those obtained in a laying facility.  相似文献

Inorganic emissions from livestock production and subsequent deposition of these ions can be a major source of pollution, causing nitrogen enrichment, eutrophication, acidification of soils and surface waters, and aerosol formation. In the poultry house, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions can also adversely affect the health, performance, and welfare of both animals and human operators. The persistence and long life expectancy of ammonia, odors and toxic pollutants from poultry houses may be due to the ability of suspended particulate matter (SPM) to serve as carriers for odorous compounds such as ammonium ions and other inorganic compounds (e.g., phosphate, sulfate, nitrate, etc.). SPM is generated from the feed, animal manure, and the birds themselves. A large portion of odor associated with exhaust air from poultry houses is SPM that has absorbed odors from within the houses. Understanding the fate and transport processes of ammonia and other inorganic emissions in poultry houses is a necessary first step in utilizing the appropriate abatement strategies. In this study, the examination and characterization of ammonium ions, major components of odors and toxic gases from poultry operations, and other ions in suspended particulate matter in a broiler house were carried out using particle trap impactors. The SPM from the particle trap impactors was extracted and analyzed for its ionic species using ion chromatography (IC). The results showed concentrations of polyatomic ions in suspended particulate matter were found to increase with successive flocks and were highly concentrated in the larger size particulate matter. In addition, the ions concentrations appeared to reach a maximum at the middle of flock age (around the fourth week), tapering off toward the end in a given flock (possibly due to ventilation rates to cool off larger birds). Thus, it can be inferred that aged of bedding materials affects the ionic concentrations in aerosol particulate matter more than the age of the birds.

Implications: In the poultry house, toxic gas emissions can adversely affect the health, performance, and welfare of both animals and human operators. The persistence of these toxic pollutants from poultry houses may be due to the ability of suspended particulate matter (SPM) to serve as carriers for these compounds (inorganic ions). Our study showed that polyatomic ions in suspended particulate matter were found to increase with successive flocks and were highly concentrated in the larger size SPM. Understanding the effect of management practices on poultry air emissions will lead to innovative best management practices to safeguard the health and welfare of the animals as well as those of the poultry operators, along with reducing the impact of potential air pollution on the environment.  相似文献

The concentrations of respirable suspended particulates (PM10), fine suspended particulates (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were measured in various locations over the territory of Hong Kong. In order to study the contributions of these pollutants from motor vehicles and their characteristics, the attention was focused on the roadside, street-level concentrations. A statistical analysis of the sampling results was conducted to obtain general characteristics of the roadside particulate and nitrogen dioxide pollution and to investigate the effects of traffic volume and meteorological factors on the pollution levels. High correlation coefficients are found between PM10, PM2.5 and NO2 concentration.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to evaluate the particulate air pollution in selected roadside microenvironments of Hong Kong through an intensive field study dated from January 1997 to February 1997. The study employed the microenvironment monitoring technique to access the exposure of pedestrians to respirable suspended particulate and airborne lead (Pb) at heavily trafficked roadsides. A total of 62 roadside sites in 14 districts covering the most urbanized and densely populated areas were selected. It was found that pedestrians were exposed to a 24 h average of respirable suspended particulate, PM10, and airborne Pb (APb), typically ranged from 25.56 to 337.40 microg/m3 and 70.71 to 285.71 ng/m3, respectively. The average PM10 concentrations at different roadside microenvironments corresponding to urban residential, urban commercial, urban industrial and new town areas were 91.84, 129.08, 83.83, and 118.89 microg/m3 respectively. The corresponding values for APb were 130.01, 143.40, 127.40 and 173.17 ng/m3, respectively. It was found that measurement at EPD nearby rooftop monitoring stations might not reflect the actual roadside PM10 exposure. Most APb field study data was significantly higher than the nearby fixed station data.  相似文献

The behaviour of six phthalate esters in the presence of particulate material suspended in fresh and saline water has been examined. The adsorption of all phthalates by the particulates is enhanced by the presence of salt. The adsorption process is fairly rapid ( <2-3 h) and the degree of adsorption depends on the characteristics of the particulates. Di-ethylhexyl phthalate is adsorbed most actively by material of a small particle size. The adsorption of other phthalates is more strongly influenced by the chemical composition of the particulates and is most closely correlated with their lipid content.  相似文献

As the addressing of high demand of good air quality in urban area, a study on air pollutant dispersion and distribution resulting from vehicular exhaust emission is strongly required. In particular, vehicular exhaust emission has become a major air pollution source in metropolitan city like Hong Kong, which is characterized with the heavy, dense traffic flow and the limited land resources. Respirable suspended particulate (RSP) is one of main pollutants resulted from vehicular exhaust emission in urban area. Hence, in this study, we focus on analyzing the variation of RSP levels including diurnal, monthly and annual patterns at selected roadsides in Hong Kong during the period of 1998--2005. Furthermore, the relationships between RSP level and the relevant meteorological factors such as temperature, rainfall and wind conditions in Hong Kong territory have been discussed as well.  相似文献

A chemical equilibrium-based predictive model expressing Cu partitioning as a function of aqueous and solid phase characteristics was developed. The model takes into account only the most important factors that govern Cu partitioning, and therefore results in a relatively simple formulation. It assumes particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) binding sites play the most important role in solid and aqueous phases. The model formulation assumed one-surface site and two dissolved organic matter (DOM) sites, and included the "solids effect". Proton effects were considered for both the particle surface sites and the DOM. The model was calibrated with data for samples collected from the Susquehanna River, and validated with White Clay Creek and Delaware River samples. Copper partitioning in natural water systems with different pH, and concentrations of alkalinity, DOC, POC, total suspended solids (TSS), and total copper was predicted reasonably well.  相似文献

This study conducted roadside particulate sampling to measure the total suspended particulate (TSP), PM10 (particles <10 μm in aerodynamic diameter) and PM2.5 (particles <2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter) mass concentration in 11 urbanized and densely populated districts in Hong Kong. One hundred and thirty-three samples were obtained to measure the mass concentrations of TSP, PM10 and PM2.5. According to these results, the TSP, PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentrations varied from 94.85 to 301.63 μg m−3, 67.67 to 142.68 μg m−3 and 50.01 to 125.12 μg m−3, respectively. The PM2.5/PM10 ratio of all samples was 0.82 which ranged from 0.62 to 0.95. The PM levels and PM ratios in metropolitan Hong Kong significantly fluctuated from site-to-site and over time. The PM2.5 mass concentration in different districts corresponding to urban industrial, new town, urban residential and urban commercial were 77.64, 87.50, 106.96 and 88.54 μg m−3, respectively. The PM2.5 level is high in Hong Kong, and for individual sampling, more than 60% daily measurements exceeded the NAAQS. The mass fraction of PM2.5 in PM10 and TSP is relatively high when compared with overseas studies.  相似文献

Many herders in the Tibetan Plateau still inherit the traditional lifestyle, including living in tents and burning yak dung for fuel. This short correspondence reports a pilot study on indoor air quality in the nomadic tents in the Nam Co region, inland Tibetan Plateau. The results showed very high concentrations of total suspended particles (TSP), averaging at 4.45 mg m?3 during the cooking/heating period (with daily value of 3.16 mg m?3). Elevated concentrations of toxic element Cd, As and Pb were also found within the tents, averaging 3.16 μg m?3, 35.00 μg m?3, and 81.39 μg m?3 for a day, respectively, which were not only far higher than those of WHO indoor air quality guidelines, but also more than 104–106 times higher than the outdoor air level in the Nam Co area. The study raises serious concerns over the health of Tibetan herders following their long-term exposure to the tent air.  相似文献

Total HCHs' and total DDTs' levels in surface sediments (SS) ranged from 0.5 to 17.5 ng g−1 and from 0.9 to 33.1 ng g−1, averaged 6.0 and 8.2 ng g−1, respectively. Total HCHs' and total DDTs' levels in suspended particulate matters (SPM) varied from 6.2 to 14.8 ng g−1 with a mean value of 12.3 ng g−1 and were from 3.4 to 25.7 ng g−1 with an average of 16.4 ng g−1, respectively. Lindane is the main HCHs' source and continuing use in the Yangtze Delta areas of ‘pure’ γ-HCH (lindane) rather than technical HCH (a mix of largely α- and some γ-HCH). DDTs in SS are mainly accumulated in history. However, high DDT fractions in SPM are indicators of new input of typical dicofol type DDT from 2002 to 2004. It can be seen that most samples from the Yangtze estuary were in ranges where adverse biological effects are expected, either occasionally or frequently.  相似文献

Very high concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) is observed at traffic junctions in India. Factor analysis-multiple regression (FA-MR), a receptor modelling technique has been used for quantitative apportionment of the sources contributing to the SPM at two traffic junctions (Sakinaka and Gandhinagar) in Mumbai, India. Varimax rotated factor analysis identified (qualitative) five possible sources; road dust, vehicular emissions, marine aerosols, metal industries and coal combustion. A quantitative estimation by FA-MR model indicated that road dust contributed to 41%, vehicular emissions to 15%, marine aerosols to 15%, metal industries to 6% and coal combustion to 6% of the SPM observed at Sakinaka traffic junction. The corresponding figures for Gandhinagar traffic junction are 33%, 18%, 15%, 8% and 11%, respectively. Due to limitation in source marker elements analysed about 16% of the remaining SPM at these two traffic junctions could not be apportioned to any possible sources by this technique. Of the observed lead in the SPM, FA-MR apportioned 62% to vehicular emissions, 17% to road dust, 11% to metal industries, 7% to coal combustion and 3% to marine aerosols at Gandhinagar traffic junction and about a similar apportionment for lead in SPM at Sakinaka traffic junction.  相似文献

The advection and dispersion of Asian dust events from China to the Pacific Ocean around Japan during 2000–2002 were investigated using the meteorological satellite data of NOAA/AVHRR and GMS-5/VISSR. Aerosol vapour index images, taking the brightness temperature difference between 11 and 12 μm, are very effective for monitoring the Asian dust phenomenon in the East Asia region, with their capacity for detection during the day or night. We discuss the dust events, focusing on the advection patterns shown in satellite images, which are classified into three types as ‘dry slot’, ‘high-pressure wedge’ and ‘travelling high’, based on synoptic patterns. The results are compared with suspended particulate matter concentrations measured at Japanese surface stations and with ground-based observations of Sakurajima volcano by a web camera system at Kagoshima in Kyushu, Japan. We found that the passage of cold fronts caused a rapid increase of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations, which exceeded 100 μg m−3, and that deep low-pressure complexes strengthened the dust phenomenon. The ‘high-pressure wedge’ type is seen much more clearly in satellite images than the ‘travelling high’ type, but SPM concentrations and visibility were similar in both owing to the differences in the vertical distribution of the dust and in viewing conditions.  相似文献

The lipid-like, amphiphilic solvent, n-octanol, has been used to determine a hydrophobic fraction of dissolved and particulate trace metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) in contaminated rivers. In a sample from the River Clyde, southwest Scotland, octanol-solubility was detected for all dissolved metals except Co, with conditional octanol-water partition coefficients, D(ow), ranging from about 0.2 (Al and Cu) to 1.25 (Pb). In a sample taken from the River Mersey, northwest England, octanol-solubility was detected for dissolved Al and Pb, but only after sample aliquots had been spiked with individual ionic metal standards and equilibrated. Spiking of the River Clyde sample revealed competition among different metals for hydrophobic ligands. Metal displacement from hydrophobic complexes was generally most significant following the addition of ionic Al or Pb, although the addition of either of these metals had little effect on the octanol-solubility of the other. In both river water samples hydrophobic metals were detected on the suspended particles retained by filtration following their extraction in n-octanol. In general, particulate Cu and Zn (up to 40%) were most available, and Al, Co and Pb most resistant (<1%) to octanol extraction. Distribution coefficients defining the concentration ratio of octanol-soluble particle-bound metal to octanol-soluble dissolved metal were in the range 10(3.3)-10(5.3)mlg(-1). The presence of hydrophobic dissolved and particulate metal species has implications for our understanding of the biogeochemical behaviour of metals in aquatic environments. Specifically, such species are predicted to exhibit characteristics of non-polar organic contaminants, including the potential to penetrate the lipid bilayer. Current strategies for assessing the bioavailability and toxicity of dissolved and particulate trace metals in natural waters may, therefore, require revision.  相似文献
