The optic cushion of Nepanthia belcheri (Perrier) is a prominent pigmented sense organ situated on the oral surface below the terminal tentacle. The distal region contains up to 170 optic cups, whilst proximally are numerous pyriform glandular cells traversed by supporting fibres. The outer margin of the optic cup is formed by alternating pigmented and photoreceptor cells. The pigmented cells contain numerous densely staining granules of scarlet pigment. The distal ends of the photoreceptors are elaborated into many long microvilli regularly arranged about a modified cilium. There is a clear circumciliary space delimiting the cilium from the microvilli.  相似文献

Suspension feeding is an important mechanism by which many marine organisms obtain food. A nonparametric method for analyzing experimental results on capture efficiency in suspension feeding is described. This approach can be used to estimate capture efficiency along the length of a cilium and to compare the capture efficiencies of two different cilia. The method is applied to experimental data on feeding by larvae of the clamMerenaria merenaria (Linné), to examine changes in capture efficiency through time, and to assess the effect of particle electrostatic charge on capture efficiency.  相似文献

Eggs and embryos of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus were used as a model to study the effect at the cellular level of potential anti-mitotic compounds extracted from the diatom Thalassiosira rotula. Eggs and embryos incubated in a water-soluble diatom extract, corresponding to 5 × 106 and 107 cells ml−1, were totally blocked (i.e. cell division was blocked) at the one-cell stage. At lower concentrations (2.5 and 1.25 × 106 cells ml−1), the first mitotic division was inhibited in 32 ± 26% and 25 ± 3.5% of the zygotes, respectively, demonstrating the dose-dependent effect of diatom extracts on sea urchin development. Immunofluorescence dyes, specific for DNA and α-tubulin subunits, were used to stain nuclei and microtubules in sea urchin embryos during various phases of development. Images with the confocal laser scanning microscope showed that tubulin was not organised in filaments at the sperm aster and cortex levels, and that the pronuclei were not fused in embryos incubated soon after fertilisation with water-soluble diatom extracts corresponding to 107 cells ml−1. At lower diatom-extract concentrations (4 × 106 cells ml −1), fusion of the pronuclei occurred but the mitotic spindle was not formed. Microtubules were clearly de-polymerised and the chromatin appeared globular and compacted at the centre of the cell. A similar structure was observed for sea urchin embryos incubated with 0.1 mM colchicine, a potent anti-mitotic compound. When sea urchin embryos were incubated in water-soluble diatom extracts at different times prior to the first mitotic division, microtubules appeared de-polymerised at each step, from pronuclear fusion to telophase, and cell division was blocked. At the histological level, embryos incubated with 4 × 106 cells ml−1 diatom extract showed nuclear fragmentation without cytokinesis. The possible use of sea urchin embryos as a bioassay to test for other unknown compounds with cytotoxic activity in phytoplankton species is discussed. Opal teeth of calanoid copepods develop early in the premolt phase of the molt cycle. They form in the apolysis space beneath the old tooth row on the mandibular gnathobase. We examined stages of tooth formation inNeocalanus spp. andCalanus pacificus. Apolysis occurs early in the distal gnathobase, then several epidermal cell types participate sequentially in formation of new teeth. Fibrous molds in the shapes of the new teeth are extruded onto the epidermal surface, then additional materials, probably proteinaceous, are secreted into them. Tooth molds next are linked to a gland in the proximal part of the gnathobase by ducts of an unusual type, lamellar-walled ducts. Silicification follows, apparently using highly osmiophilic material supplied by the proximal gland. Opal is laid down at the outer periphery of the mold then thickens toward the attachment of the mold to newly formed chitin at its base. During apolysis the epidermal cells move proximally without breaking ducts that connect small dermal glands with pores in the sides of the opal teeth. The molds for the new teeth form surrounding these ducts, and new pores result. The glands are like the ciliary exocrine glands seen in other Crustacea, with the duct deriving from fusion of the axonemes of a cilium. Presumably the glands secrete a substance into food newly broken by the teeth. This could be a toxin or a digestive enzyme.  相似文献

Colonies ofPyrosoma atlanticum were collected by submersible in October 1988 in the Caribbean Sea, and testes were studied by electron microscopy. Spermatogonia, spermatocytes and early spermatids have two centrioles. The proximal centriole subsequently disappears, its remains apparently persisting in the spermatozoon as dense material adjacent to the distal centriole, which gives rise to the axoneme. At the tip of early spermatids are several 50 nm proacrosomal vesicles, which disappear leaving no trace in early elongating spermatids. The spermatozoon lacks an acrosome and has a head 35µm long. The head is differentiated into a bulbous posterior portion 5µm long × 1µm wide, a thinner anterior portion 25µm long tapering from a width of 0.7µm to a width of 0.4µm, and a very thin anterior extension 5µm long × 0.5µm wide. At the start of elongation, the anterior extension begins to form just lateral to the proacrosomal vesicles as a spiral projection comprising part of the nucleus, covered by a thin sheath of cytoplasm. This sheath of cytoplasm undergoes a complex differentiation. Ultimately, the nucleus in the anterior extension is overlain by two membrane-bound sheaths of cytoplasm connected by a spiral flange of cytoplasm. Between these two sheaths is a spiral space, open to the exterior through a subterminal pore near the sperm tip. In early spermatids the mitochondria fuse into a single mitochondrion, which remains lateral to the nucleus. The cristae become modified late in spermatogenesis. Throughout elongation of the spermatid there are patches of dense material between the nucleus and mitochondrion. A manchette of microtubules transiently encircles the thin anterior portion of the nucleus during the last phase of elongation. A manchette is not present during most of elongation. In the spermatozoon the mitochondrion, which has reticulate cristae, spirals a few times about the nucleus and extends from the junction between the bulbous portion and the thinner anterior portion of the nucleus to the junction between the thinner anterior portion and the nuclear extension. Spermatogenesis inP. atlanticum, compared to that in other tunicates, most closely resembles that in colonial ascidians, and supports the majority view that pyrosomes arose from aplousobranch ascidians that lost their attachment to the substratum. Pyrosome sperm are more highly derived than doliolid sperm, which have an acrosome that is probably capable of exocytosis. When salp and pyrosome sperm are compared, both are highly derived, but neither shares any apomorphies with the other that it does not share with at least one other tunicate order. Thus, sperm morphology does not support the majority view that pyrosomes gave rise to doliolids and neither confirms nor denies the idea that pyrosomes are intermediate between aplousobranch ascidians and salps. Therefore, it is likely that the class Thaliacea is polyphyletic, with doliolids arising very early from the ascidian lineage and with salps and pyrosomes arising somewhat later.  相似文献

The spermatozoon ofBirgus latro (Linnaeus, 1767) is approx 14µm in length. It is composed of a large multi-layered oblong-ovoid acrosome which is capped by a conical operculum and lies anterior to a small ring of cytoplasm and an amorphous nucleus which is drawn out into a series of arms or extensions. Originating from the cytoplasmic area are three further long microtubular arms. The sperm ofB. latro is very similar to the sperm of the only other genus in the Coenobitidae,Coenobita, of whichC. clypeatus is a representative species. They share a suite of ultrastructural characters including: a long, cylindrical, capsule-bound acrosome containing an inner acrosome core, a large acrosome ray zone and a thin outer acrosome zone; an apical operculum anterior to a subopercular zone divided into two areas of differing density; an invaginated perforatorial zone with a bipartite granular matrix; microvillus-like extensions of the inner acrosome core projecting into the perforatorial invagination; a ring of cytoplasm, around the base of the acrosome, containing numerous mitochondria, extensive lamellar systems and the bases of three microtubular arms; granular nuclear material forming irregular arms; and at the posterior portion of the cell membrane a combination of nuclear and plasma membranes. Some ultrastructural characters which separate the two genera are: a domed operculum inC. clypeatus as opposed to a conical one inB. latro; inB. latro there is some residual cytoplasm external to the operculum and centrioles are absent from the mature spermatozoon; inC. clypeatus the inner acrosome core does not appear to invest the perforatorium and a series of dense rods are found subjacent and internal to the operculum. Similarities between the two coenobitids are greater than those shared with the paguridEupagurus bernhardus. In this latter species, the acrosome is more ovoid than cylindrical and the acrosome zones are less conspicuous; the operculum is absent from the mature sperm (although present during spermiohistogenesis); no subopercular zone is present; the perforatorium contains longitudinally arranged microtubules and extends the full length of the acrosome; and the nuclear material does not form separate nuclear arms. Sperm ultrastructure supports monophyly of the Paguroidea, while distinguishing coenobitids from pagurids within this superfamily.  相似文献

Employing the technique of pressure fixation, the effect of high hydrostatic pressure (1 to 800 atm) at 5°C has been investigated on cilia of the gill epithelium in Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis (Baltic and North Seas), and on the skin and muscle cells of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas). With increasing pressure, the filaments and tubuli are increasingly disorganized to an electron-dense material, which seems to be a conglomeration of the globular structure units. Minimum pressure causing disintegration of filaments and tubules is 300 atm; 600 atm is critical, especially for filaments in skin cells of B. lanceolatum. Whereas the filaments do not show any intermediate stages of damage at any one pressure, microtubules show different stages of disorganization. There seems to be a direct relation between motility and structural organization of cilia. Probably the mechanisms of disintegration of filaments and microtubules are related to the enzymatic activities and the protein-protein-interactions of the subunits. The difference between di-and monomer enzymatic systems in the structures may be important for pressure resistance of the organelles.  相似文献

Ultrastructural evidence is presented of a chromatophoresystem in the zooxanthellae containing hermatypic, deep-water coral Leptoseris fragilis (Milne Edwards and Haime). It consists of multilobed cells which mainly occupy the intercellular space of the oral gastrodermis. The cellular processes are filled with electron-dense granules up to 1-m-long and 0.5-m-wide. Within the cytoplasm an elaborate system of microtubules is established. The ramifications of the pigment cells, containing the pigment granules, form a dense and nearly continuous layer close to the overlying zooxanthellae. It is speculated that host pigments may transform the violet portion of the incident light into longer wavelengths, thus increasing the photosynthetic efficiency of the zooxanthellae.  相似文献

Evidence is presented that a simple power equation of the formX t X m b(|tt m|)B can describe growth in length and weight of fishes, whereX t denotes fish length or weight at aget, X m is length or weight (L m orW m ) at a reference aget m , andb andB are parameters to be estimated by the least squares. The optimum age of fish populations (t y ) may be estimated by the equationMW m /b=±y B (B/y-M) whereM denotes natural mortality and wherey=t y -t m .  相似文献

Tests have been carried out, both on phytoplankton cultures and in the field, on the relation between the ratio of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl urea (DCMU)-enhanced to normal fluorescence (F D /F N ) and the specific photosynthetic rate (P/B). In all cases observed, significant linear correlations were found between these two values. Differences in this relation were observed according to species and physiological conditions. Nutrient stress that occurs in batch cultures decreases both F D /F N and P/B, while lowered light intensity has a different effect on both, increasing F D /F N and decreasing P/B. This is interpreted as indicating that F D /F N is an index of photosynthetic efficiency at different light levels and an indicator of the specific photosynthetic rate (P/B) when physiological conditions vary at a given light intensity. The practical use of DCMU-enhanced fluorometry to estimate instantaneous P/B values in the field is discussed, stressing the frequent calibrations needed, as in all in situ fluorometry studies.  相似文献

Samples representing the damselfishes (Perciformes: Pomacentridae) Stegastes nigricans, Chrysiptera biocellata, C. glauca, and C. leucopoma from North Male Atoll, Republic of Maldives, and Guam, Southern Marianas, were surveyed electrophoretically. A sample representing C. leucopoma from Ngemelis Island, Republic of Palau, was included in the analysis to provide a within-Micronesia comparison. On average, products of 23 presumptive protein-coding loci were examined in each sample. In comparisons of Maldivian and Guamanian samples, absolute or virtually fixed allelic differences were detected at: (1) ADA * and PEPS * for Stegastes nigricans; (2) ADA *, AAT-1 *, AAT-2 *, and mMDH * for C. biocellata, and; (3) ADA *, AAT-1 *, and AAT-2 * for C. glauca. At three polymorphic loci, ADA *, sMDH-1 *, and sMDH-2 *, similar allele frequencies were found in Palauan and Guamanian samples representing C. leucopoma, suggesting that these samples share a gene pool. Significantly different allele frequencies at ADA * and sMDH-1 * and a virtually fixed allelic difference at sMDH-2 * were detected between the Maldivian samples and each of the Micronesian samples representing C. leucopoma. The observed patterns of allele frequency differentiation suggest that Maldivian and Micronesian samples of each of the four study species represent separate demes.  相似文献

The tentacles of the larvae of Phragmatopoma californica (Fewkes) a tubicolous, reef-building polychaete, were examined by video-equipped light microscopy and transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The surface of the tentacles has a unique ciliation pattern, consisting of dorsal tufts of short immotile cilia, ventrolateral tufts of short and long immotile cilia, and ventral motile cilia. Cells bearing immotile cilia are primary sensory cells with long basal processes that form synapses with basiepithelial nerve fibers. The sensory cell cytoplasm is similar to that of nervous tissue, and contains microtubules, neurofilaments, and synaptic vesicles. Sensory cell synapses with basiepithelial nerves appear to be both axodendritic and axoaxonic. The structure of the immotile cilia is compared to that of motile cilia. Unlike motile cilia, immotile cilia are short, rigid, end in a blunt tip and possess and axoneme with typically arranged mictotubules that terminate in an electron-dense end plate. The basal feet of immotile cilia do not anastomose with adjacent basal bodies, and the ciliary membrane is loosely applied to the axoneme and is covered by a surface coat of filamentous material. The use of the larval tentacles during substrate exploration, and the location and ultrastructure of sensory cilia, indicate that they may be involved in the perception of substrateassociated chemical signals and/or mechanical cues of significance in substrate selection.  相似文献

Aesthetascs are the olfactory receptor organs responsible for mate recognition in many decapod crustacean species. The number of aesthetascs varies greatly among species in different environments, but the functional significance of this variation is poorly understood. This study examined the relationship between social environment and the number of aesthetascs in six species of caridean shrimp in the genus Lysmata. Generally, the number of aesthetascs was greater in group-living species (L. boggessi and L. wurdemanni) than in low-density (L. ankeri and L. pederseni) and pair-living species (L. amboinensis and L. debelius). Aesthetascs are innervated by olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). The total number of ORNs is related to the sensitivity of olfactory odor detection, and it was higher in group-living species than in pair-living species. Sexual dimorphism in the number of aesthetascs was present in L. boggessi, L. wurdemanni, and L. ankeri but not in L. pederseni and L. amboinensis.  相似文献

Grapsoid crabs of the genera Planes and Plagusia are commonly referred to as “rafting crabs” due to their propensity to live on flotsam and pelagic marine animals. Planes minutus and Planes major (=Planes cyaneus) are epibionts of sea turtles. Occurrences of grapsoid crabs in the genera Planes and Plagusia were evaluated on a total of 27 olive ridley sea turtles, Lepidochelys olivacea, from the eastern tropic Pacific (1998–2001) and the Hawaiian Islands (2002) captured in July–December each year. This is the first report of Planes marinus and Plagusia squamosa on sea turtles, and of P. major, P. marinus, and P. squamosa in sympatry on a confined substrate. Stomach content analyses showed P. major and P. marinus consumed a variety of neuston and marine vegetation, with the former consuming considerably more animal material. Epibiotic P. squamosa consumed mostly plant material. The three Planes species had distinctive differences in gastric mill tooth morphology. The versatile mouthparts of P. marinus are described and resemble those of their congeners. Most female P. major and P. marinus collected were ovigerous and present in all survey months.  相似文献

The induction of in vivo chlorophyll a (chl a) fluorescence (change in fluorescence intensity during a time-scale of ms to s) was measured to determine the potential of this technique for assessing the physiological condition of the macroalgae Chondrus crispus and Ulva sp. A gradient in variable fluorescence (P-F 0 =peak minus initial fluorescence, a measure of Photosystem II activity) was found along the frond of C. crispus, the values increasing with distance from the thallus apex. No gradient was observed for Ulva sp. thalli. Nitrogen- or phosphorus-depleted Ulva sp. required a longer dark-conditioning period and had lower values of P-F 0 than did controls. In contrast, no differences were found in P-F 0 of N- or P-depleted C. crispus unless values were normalized to chl a. The irradiance history of C. crispus strongly influenced P-F 0 , even after dark-conditioning: P-F 0 declined by about 70% as the mean daily natural irradiance increased between 2 February and 14 March 1986; a negative correlation was observed between P-F 0 and the photon flux density 1 d prior to the measurement; P-F 0 remained elevated when C. crispus was grown under a low photon flux density; and P-F 0 decreased in thalli within 5 d of transfer from growth under natural irradiance to an incubator with artificial irradiance. Changes in variable fluorescence at different growth irradiances of C. crispus may be due to adaptive changes in the relative absorption cross-section of this alga. The influence of irradiance history on Ulva sp. was minimal in comparison.Issued as NRCC No. 28730Part of this study was carried out while employed by Focal Marine Ltd., Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada  相似文献

The ratio of variable fluorescence to maximal fluorescence (F v/F m) was measured during a night and day cycle in five different macroalgae growing in the littoral zone at the Swedish west coast; the green algae Ulva lactuca, Cladophora sp. and Enteromorpha flexousa, the red alga Ceramium nodulosum and the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus. All the green algae and C. nodulosum showed both diurnal fluctuations in F v/F m during days of high light intensities and a significant negative correlation between F v/F m and photon irradiance (PI). An attempt has been made to improve calculations of macroalgal net growth based on carbon fixation (αnet) considering this diurnal change in F v/F m. By assuming that the negative linear correlation between F v/F m and the maximum quantum yield for photosynthesis (Φ) is proportional to that between F v/F m and αnet, it was possible to include the daily variation of αnet due to photoinhibition. To compensate for the variation of F v/F m, a representative value for each day was obtained by weighting all values of F v/F m over the diurnal period in relation to total PI. For all algal species there was a fairly good agreement between this representative value and the F v/F m value measured around noon. As the daily representative F v/F m value showed a negative linear correlation with the daily mean PI, it was possible to correct αnet for differences of daily mean PI. Skeletonema costatum was grown at different steady-state growth rates in ammonium or silicate-limited chemostats. The culture was perturbed from its steady-state condition by a single addition of the limiting nutrients ammonium or silicate. The transient response was followed by measuring nutrient disappearance of the liliting perturbation experiment indicate that three distinct modes of uptake of the limiting nutrient can be distinguished; surge uptake (V s ), internally controlled uptake (V i ), and externally controlled uptake (V e ). An interpretation of these three modes of uptake is given and their relation to control of uptake of the limiting nutrient is discussed. The uptake rates of the non-limiting nutrients were shown to be depressed during the surge of the uptake of the limiting nutrient. Kinetic uptake parameters, K s and V max, were obtained from data acquired during the externally controlled uptake segment, V e . The same V max value of 0. 12 h-1, was obtained under either silicate or ammonium limitation. Estimates of K s were 0.4 g-at NH4-N l-1 and 0.7 g-at Si l-1. Short-term 15N uptake-rate measurements conducted on nitrogen-limited cultures appear to be a combination of V s or V i , or at lower substrate concentrations V s and V e . It is difficult to separate these different uptake modes in batch or tracer experiments, and ensuing problems in interpretation are discussed.Contribution No. 882 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA. In Dolioletta gegenbauri and Doliolum nationalis, collected in 1987 in the bay of Villefranche-sur-mer (French Mediterranean Sea), spermiogenesis is essentially the same. Early spermatids have a round head, a flagellum arising from a single centriole with short microtubules at 45° to its base, several mitochondria, and an acrosome 50 nm thick and 250 nm long with its long axis parallel to the plasma membrane. The acrosomal contents are dense, with a central denser plate. The nuclear envelope next to the acrosome is thickened and concave. In elongating nuclei, strands of chromatin become oriented parallel to the length of the nucleus and then twist helically. Although the mitochondria surround the nucleus, they remain relatively short and do not fuse into a single mitochondrion as in sperm of other tunicates. In very late doliolid spermatids, the acrosome undergoes exocytosis, and exposes fibrous material that stays associated with the tip of the sperm; no acrosomal tubule forms. Exocytosis at this stage may be triggered by fixation. If so, exocytosis probably occurs naturally at some time before fusion of sperm and egg. Sperm have elongate heads (1 m×10 m), with the anterior two-thirds of the nucleus surrounded by mitochondria. Spermiogenesis in doliolids, compared to that in other tunicates, is most like that in solitary members of the class Ascidiacea, except that in the latter the sperm mitochondria fuse and the acrosome appears incapable of exocytosis. In contrast, previous work has shown that salps (class Thaliacea) and colonial didemnid ascidians have an acrosomeless sperm with a spiral mitochondrion, while the class Appendicularia has a sperm with a midpiece, a compact head and an acrosome capable of exocytosis and acrosomal tubule formation. By outgroup comparison with echinoderms and acraniates, appendicularian sperm are plesiomorphic within the Tunicata. Thus, gamete morphology indicates that (1) solitary ascidians and doliolids had a common ancestor, (2) the popular idea that doliolids gave rise to appendicularians is incorrect, and (3) the Thaliacea are polyphyletic, doliolids having arisen very early from the ascidian lineage and salps having arisen later.  相似文献

The systematics of the genus Sepia is not yet clear. Morphological evidence has led to S. officinalis Linnaeus, 1758 being considered as belonging to the subgenus Sepia sensu stricto, and S. orbignyana Férussac, 1826 and S. elegans Blainville, 1827 as belonging to the subgenus Rhombosepion. Samples of 30 individuals of S. officinalis and S. orbignyana from both sides of an oceanographic boundary off the north-west Iberian Peninsula, and a sample of S. elegans from the northern side, were collected in 1993–1994. Allozyme electrophoresis for 32 presumptive loci revealed low levels of genetic variability for the three Sepia species (mean expected heterozygosity estimates were <0.052). No significant differences in allozyme frequencies were detected among populations of either S. officinalis or S. orbignyana. The genetic identities (I) of S. officinalis and S. orbignyana (I=0.12) and of S. elegans (I=0.13) were significantly different from that of S. orbignyana and S. elegans (I=0.49). The former are typical of values for confamilial genera, and a new generic status is proposed for the latter two species, which become Rhombosepion orbignyana (Férussac, 1826) and R. elegans (Blainville, 1827).  相似文献
