Earlier studies have shown that the sarcophagid fly Arachnidomyia lindae is the principal egg-sac predator of the colonial orb-weaving spider Metepeira incrassata, and that risk of egg-sac loss increases with group size. Observations of specialized behaviors for attack (flies) and defense (spiders) suggest that this predator-prey relationship may incorporate elements of ploy and counterploy behavior. Here we explore this relationship in detail and test hypotheses regarding efficacy of attack and defense behaviors. Egg-sac guarding by the spider includes defensive behaviors specific to this fly predator, which were observed during experimental "attacks" with tethered A. lindae, but not with similar presentations of non-predatory Musca domestica. Experimental studies also show that Metepeira incrassata recognizes this predatory fly by airborne cues (i.e., the signature frequency of wing-beats), and can distinguish between this predator and other flies (potential prey) on the basis of wing-beat frequency differences. Removal of female spiders results in a significantly higher probability of unguarded egg-sacs being parasitized, demonstrating the adaptive value of spider defensive behaviors. We also present evidence that A. lindae utilizes a behavioral ploy for circumventing spider guarding behavior (aggressive mimicry - producing vibrations of captured prey in the web), and that Metepeira incrassata, in turn, exhibits a counter-ploy behavior (signal thread cutting) to eliminate this potentially distracting vibratory information. While previous studies have shown that this colonial web-building spider uses a number of general attack-abatement mechanisms against a diversity of predators and parasitoids, results of this study suggest that selection pressures from a highly specialized predator may also result in evolution of predator-specific prey responses.  相似文献

Summary Seothyra henscheli (Eresidae) is a burrowing spider that lives in the dune sea of the southern Namib Desert, Namibia. Prey capture by these spiders involves a foray from a cool subterranean retreat to the undersurface of a capture web that can be lethally hot. Striking, disentangling and retrieving prey from the capture web typically involves several short trips to the capture web, alternating with retreats to the cool burrow. It has been suggested that this behavior limits the increase of body temperature a spider must experience while working at the hot capture web. We used biophysical models in conjunction with direct observations of prey-capture behavior and distributions of sand temperature to estimate body temperatures experienced by S. henscheli during prey capture. In the circumstances we observed, only the relatively long post-strike retreat from the capture web is important in keeping spiders' body temperatures from exceeding their lethal limits. After the post-strike retreat, shuttling appreciably limits the increase in body temperature of small individuals, but may have little effect on body temperature increase in larger spiders. A series of experiments on the littoral amphipod Talitrus saltator (Montagu) was carried out between April and September, 1978–1981, both under natural conditions and inland with artificial landscapes of different heights on the horizon, in order to assess the visual importance of the landscape in zonal orientation in populations from the Mediterranean coast, and to determine interactions between solar orientation and orientation based on the landscape. Inland, orientation in controls (permitting only vision of the sky and the sun) was compared to that of the experimental individuals, who could see a simulated landscape positioned landwards to them and seawards. In nature, sandhoppers released in a level arena with the landscape screened from view were compared with others released in an unscreened arena and on the sand in absolutely natural conditions. Situations where solar orientation contradicted local cues were produced both by releasing the sandhoppers on a shore diversely orientated to their own, and by shifting their internal clock by nine hours. Results show that T. saltator uses the landscape as a cue in its orientation towards the sea, in conjunction with solar orientation: the latter being the principal factor involved even when the sandhoppers are separated from the local optical factor in the sky (in trials at a distance from the sea). In fact, with the artificial landscape set seawards, none of the populations we studied showed any orientation based on the landscape comparable in accuracy to orientation based exclusively on the sun. From the experiments carried out in natural conditions, it is possible to deduce that conflicting conditions gave rise to two types of results: deviation from the mean direction and an increase in dispersion, up to total dispersion when the local factors were in total contrast to solar orientation (clock-shifted sandhoppers released on the sand).  相似文献

Experiments were designed to determine whether anemotaxis shown by the terrestrial hermit crab Coenobita rugosus H. Milne Edwards is (i) an orientational strategy leading the crabs to sea or (ii) a strategy improving rectilinear flight. In an arena with uniform landscape, hermit crabs from different beaches of the Aldabra atoll orientated during daylight in the direction of the sea of their own beach; this orientation was only slightly affected by wind direction. Under artificial wind conditions, at night, all hermit crabs displayed positive anemotaxis, independent of the orientation of the home beach, thus leaving little support for the first hypothesis. During the day, with the sea and beach both visible, all the hermit crabs on the beach moved landwards irrespective of wind and home beach direction.  相似文献

Phenological effects of climate change are expected to differ among species, altering interactions within ecological communities. However, the nature and strength of these effects can vary during ontogeny, so the net community-level effects will be the result of integration over an individual's lifetime. I resolved the mechanism driving the effects of warming and spider predation risk on a generalist grasshopper herbivore at each ontogenetic stage and quantified the treatment effects on a measure of reproductive fitness. Spiders caused nymphal grasshoppers to increase the proportion of herbs in their diet, thus having a positive indirect effect on grasses and a negative indirect effect on herbs. Warming strengthened the top-down effect by affecting spiders and grasshoppers differently. In cooler, ambient conditions, grasshoppers and spiders had a high degree of spatial overlap within the plant canopy. Grasshopper position was unaffected by temperature, but spiders moved lower in the canopy in response to warming. This decreased the spatial overlap between predator and prey, allowing nymphal grasshoppers to increase daily feeding time. While spiders decreased grasshopper growth and reproductive fitness in ambient conditions, spiders had no effect on grasshopper fitness in warmed treatments. The study demonstrates the importance of considering the ontogeny of behavior when examining the effects of climate change on trophic interactions.

Animals are commonly expected to assess each other during contests in order to economically identify relative status. Escalated or long contests are expected to arise mainly when rivals have difficulty discriminating small differences. Results of the present study of male-male contests in Plexippus paykulli, a jumping spider (Salticidae) with acute vision, are not in accord with this widely held view. Despite the typical finding that size-advantaged rivals are more likely to win contests and that this tendency increases with size disparity, contest dynamics suggest that these tendencies are achieved in the absence of direct size assessment. In contests between different-sized spiders, maximum escalation and overall duration were predicted by the absolute size of the size-disadvantaged spider (usually the loser) rather than the size difference between the rivals. This result suggests that spiders base decisions of persistence on their own size, such that size-disadvantaged rivals usually reach their limits first, and then retreat. This interpretation is further supported by findings that maximum escalation and total duration were both positively related to size in contests between size-matched spiders. Spiders were more likely to win if they oriented and displayed first, and longer, more escalated, contests ensued if the size-disadvantaged spider was the first to orient and display. Proximity of rivals at contest outset also influenced contest dynamics, but not outcome.  相似文献

Understanding the interplay between environmental factors contributing to treeline formation and how these factors influence different life stages remains a major research challenge. We used an afforestation experiment including 92 000 trees to investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of tree mortality and growth at treeline in the Swiss Alps. Seedlings of three high-elevation conifer species (Larix decidua, Pinus mugo ssp. uncinata, and Pinus cembra) were systematically planted along an altitudinal gradient at and above the current treeline (2075 to 2230 m above sea level [a.s.l.]) in 1975 and closely monitored during the following 30 years. We used decision-tree models and generalized additive models to identify patterns in mortality and growth along gradients in elevation, snow duration, wind speed, and solar radiation, and to quantify interactions between the different variables. For all three species, snowmelt date was always the most important environmental factor influencing mortality, and elevation was always the most important factor for growth over the entire period studied. Individuals of all species survived at the highest point of the afforestation for more than 30 years, although mortality was greater above 2160 m a.s.l., 50-100 m above the current treeline. Optimal conditions for height growth differed from those for survival in all three species: early snowmelt (ca. day of year 125-140 [where day 1 is 1 January]) yielded lowest mortality rates, but relatively later snowmelt (ca. day 145-150) yielded highest growth rates. Although snowmelt and elevation were important throughout all life stages of the trees, the importance of radiation decreased over time and that of wind speed increased. Our findings provide experimental evidence that tree survival and height growth require different environmental conditions and that even small changes in the duration of snow cover, in addition to changes in temperature, can strongly impact tree survival and growth patterns at treeline. Further, our results show that the relative importance of different environmental variables for tree seedlings changes during the juvenile phase as they grow taller.  相似文献

Summary A variety of orb-weaving spider species construct stabilimenta, patterned areas of dense silk, typically near the hub of the orb. The adaptive significance of this construction, along with associated behaviors such as shuttling and vibrating, is much debated. Arigiope argentata on small islands of the Bahamas frequently possess stabilimenta; we studied 397 individuals of this species to investigate possible functions of their stabilimenta, paying particular attention to predator-defense hypotheses. Cruciform stabilimenta were commoner in all size classes of spiders than discoid stabilimenta or no stabilimentum at all; discoid stabilimenta occurred mostly among intermediate size classes. Within the cruciform type, two-segmented stabilimenta were especially common among the very smallest spiders. Size of cruciform stabilimenta showed a curvilinear relation to spider body length; the fitted curve for total segment length had a maximum at an intermediate spider length. We argue that this relationship (among other phenomena) supports an apparently-larger-size hypothesis, whereby intermediate-sized spiders in particular appear much larger than they actually are. This could discourage predators, including those that are gape-limited such as lizards. We argue that stabilimenta in the smallest spiders, in which typically two segments are opposed, so that they more or less line up, serve as camouflage. When disturbed experimentally, spiders with discoid stabilimenta shuttle to the opposite side of the centrally located stabilimentum. This seems an obvious defensive behavior and occurs less frequently among spiders with cruciform stabilimenta. Large spiders vibrate more frequently than small ones, but no relation exists between vibration frequency and stabilimentum type. We argue (see also Tolbert 1975) that vibrating behavior, in which the spider can become a blur, renders its location more difficult to discern and the spider more difficult to grasp, rather than increasing apparent size. Animal structures come at material, energetic, time, and expression costs. Some orb-web spiders add three-dimensional barrier structures to their webs, but many do not. Predator protection is considered to be the principal benefit of adding these structures. Accordingly, it remains paradoxical why some orb-web spiders might construct the barriers while others do not. Here, we experimentally determined whether the barrier structure added to the horizontal orb web of the spider Cyrtophora moluccensis deters predators at the cost of reducing the amount of prey captured in the field. We conducted experiments by day and night to assess whether the effects vary with the time of day. We found that the three-dimensional barriers not only offered protection from predatory wasps by day but also enhanced the amount of prey captured by day and night. Moreover, the barrier structure appears particularly useful at catching moths, the largest and most energetically profitable prey that it encounters. We, therefore, concluded that reducing the energetic and time costs associated with producing and depositing extra silk threads is the principal reason why barrier structures are used intermittently among orb-web spiders.  相似文献

Summary Perhaps the most important factor affecting predator-prey interactions is their encounter probability. Predators must either locate sites where prey are active or attract prey to them, and prey must be able to recognize potential predators and flee before capture. In this study we manipulate and describe three components of the foraging system of predatory, web-weaving spiders, the presence of viscid droplets, silk brightness (achromatic surface reflectance), and visibility of the orb pattern, to determine their effect on insect attraction, recognition, and web avoidance. We found that webs with viscid droplets were more visible to prey at close range, but at greater distances the sparkling droplets lured insects to the web area and hence increased insect capture probability. Although the size of viscid droplets and silk brightness are closely correlated (Table 2, Fig. 3), the relationships among droplet size, spider size, and the visual environments in which webs are found are more complicated (Fig. 2, Tables 2, 3). In environments with predictable light exposure, droplet size and hence silk visibility correlate with spider size, and spiders that forage at night produce relatively more visible silks then spiders that forage during the day (Table 3, Fig. 4). In habitats in which light levels are not predictable, silk surface reflectance and spider size are not closely correlated, suggesting that the complexity of the light environment, as well as the visual and foraging behaviors of insects found there, has played an important role in the evolution of spider-insect interactions.Offprint requests to: C.L. The social spider Anelosimus studiosus exhibits a behavioral polymorphism where colony members express either a passive, tolerant behavioral tendency (social) or an aggressive, intolerant behavioral tendency (asocial). Here we test whether asocial individuals act as colony defenders by deflecting the suite of foreign (i.e., heterospecific) spider species that commonly exploit multi-female colonies. We (1) determined whether the phenotypic composition of colonies is associated with foreign spider abundance, (2) tested whether heterospecific spider abundance and diversity affect colony survival in the field, and (3) performed staged encounters between groups of A. studiosus and their colony-level predator Agelenopsis emertoni (A. emertoni)to determine whether asocial females exhibit more defensive behavior. We found that larger colonies harbor more foreign spiders, and the number of asocial colony members was negatively associated with foreign spider abundance. Additionally, colony persistence was negatively associated with the abundance and diversity of foreign spiders within colonies. In encounters with a colony-level predator, asocial females were more likely to exhibit escalatory behavior, and this might explain the negative association between the frequency of asocial females and the presence of foreign spider associates. Together, our results indicate that foreign spiders are detrimental to colony survival, and that asocial females play a defensive role in multi-female colonies.  相似文献

Although predators can affect foraging behaviors of floral visitors, rarely is it known if these top-down effects of predators may cascade to plant fitness through trait-mediated interactions. In this study we manipulated artificial crab spiders on flowers of Rubus rosifolius to test the effects of predation risk on flower-visiting insects and strength of trait-mediated indirect effects to plant fitness. In addition, we tested which predator traits (e.g., forelimbs, abdomen) are recognized and avoided by pollinators. Total visitation rate was higher for control flowers than for flowers with an artificial crab spider. In addition, flowers with a sphere (simulating a spider abdomen) were more frequently visited than those with forelimbs or the entire spider model. Furthermore, the presence of artificial spiders decreased individual seed set by 42% and fruit biomass by 50%. Our findings indicate that pollinators, mostly bees, recognize and avoid flowers with predation risk; forelimbs seem to be the predator trait recognized and avoided by hymenopterans. Additionally, predator avoidance by pollinators resulted in pollen limitation, thereby affecting some components of plant fitness (fruit biomass and seed number). Because most pollinator species that recognized predation risk visited many other plant species, trait-mediated indirect effects of spiders cascading down to plant fitness may be a common phenomenon in the Atlantic rainforest ecosystem.  相似文献

Ria Formosa Lagoon is the most important bivalve production region of the South Portuguese coast. However, the microbial contamination has been increasing in the northwest area of the lagoon. This study assesses the microbiological contamination of clams Ruditapes decussatus from the most contaminated area for 1 year period. Escherichia coli levels were weekly determined and related with variations in several environmental parameters: precipitation, atmospheric temperature, solar radiation, wind velocity, humidity and tide height. Highest E. coli levels in clams were associated with periods of heaviest rainfall and lowest temperature, mainly due to diffuse sources of faecal discharges. A seasonal trend was observed: microbial contamination in clams was lowest in summer, with highest temperatures, intense solar radiation and dry weather and higher in the remaining seasons, especially in winter due to the runoff of faecal contaminated waters. Several measurements not only to protect the quality of the lagoon, but also to protect public health were recommended. The most imperative will be to detect and extinguish the diffuse contamination sources. Otherwise it might be necessary to implement an interdiction period of bivalve harvesting after heavy rainfalls.  相似文献

Predators hunting for cryptic prey use search images, but how do prey search for cryptic predators? We address this question using the interaction between bumblebees and the colour-changing crab spider Misumena vatia which can camouflage itself on some flowers. In laboratory experiments, we exposed bumblebees to an array of flowers concealing robotic predators (a trapping mechanism combined with a 3D life-sized model of a crab spider or a circle). Groups of bees were trained to avoid either cryptic yellow spiders or yellow circles (equal area to the spiders) or remained predator naive. The bees were then exposed to a new patch of white flowers containing some cryptic predators (either white spiders, white circles or a mixture of both). We monitored individual foraging choices and used a 3D video tracking system to quantify the bees’ flight behaviour. The bees trained to avoid cryptic spiders, chose 40% fewer spider-harbouring flowers than expected by chance, but were indifferent to cryptic circles. They also aborted a higher proportion of landings on flowers harbouring spiders, ultimately feeding from half as many ‘dangerous’ flowers as naive bees. Previous encounters with cryptic spiders also influenced the flight behaviour of bees in the new flower patch. Experienced bees spent more time inspecting the flowers they chose to reject (both with and without concealed spiders) and scanned from side to side more in front of the flowers to facilitate predator detection. We conclude that bees disentangle shape from colour cues and thus can form a generalised search image for spider shapes, independent of colour.  相似文献

Summary Because of the large amount of webbing they provide, social spider colonies often host other satellite spider species referred to as kleptoparasites or food stealers. Such kleptoparasites may take advantage of increased prey capture rates associated with large spider aggregations. This study investigated the relationship between a cooperatively social spider species, Anelosimus eximius (Araneae: Theridiidae), which lives in the undergrowth of tropical rainforests in Peru, and its kleptoparasite, Argyrodes ululans (Araneae: Theridiidae), which specializes in foraging in An. eximius webs. Although large aggregates of spiders may be more attractive to kleptoparasites, the benefits of group defense may offset this cost. Natural colonies were observed, and enclosed field colonies containing fixed numbers of host spiders were manipulated in order to determine whether kleptoparasite success is affected by the number of social spiders that are available for defense. Prey was less likely to be stolen by Ar. ululans when a greater number of host An. eximius spiders were involved in prey capture. When hosts detected a kleptoparasite earlier and chased it more often, prey was more likely to be successfully defended. Ar. ululans was more successful in stealing small prey items in all colonies and gave up more readily on very large prey (> 11 mm). I conclude that communal living and group defense in An. eximius confer protection from the kleptoparasite Ar. ululans.  相似文献

Summary Nearest-neighbor distances and species' densities were calculated for 949 individuals of 8 species of orb-weaving spiders from eight edge and meacow sites in Panama. These data were used to test the hypothesis that interspecific aggressive interactions influenced spider community structure by: (1) eliminating or decreasing the densities of sympatric, less aggressive species, or, (2) affecting nearest-neighbor relationships so that large or aggressive individuals had smaller, less aggressive or more distant neighbors. Although there was a negative relationship between the densities of two species pairs (Leucauge sp. and Mangora pia; Eriophora fuliginea and Cyclosa caroli), overall spider densities could not be predicted from indices of spider aggression obtained by introduction experiments. The spatial distribution of spiders in three dimensions was not significantly different than random. I attributed the lack of clumping to the relative vegetational homogeneity of my sites; the lack of overdispersion may reflect the fact that websites are not limiting. Relationships between nearest neighbors generally supported the aggression hypothesis, however, comparisons of the actual data with equivalent randomly-assorted data indicate that a hypothesis of randomly chosen neighborsis equally applicable. This result suggests that, unless websites differ significantly in their quality, with high quality websites in short supply, spider aggression may not affect community structure.  相似文献

Group living in spiders is characterised by two principle modes, the cooperative social mode and the colonial non-cooperative mode. Kin-relationships due to reduced dispersal determine population genetic structure in social spiders, but the dispersal mechanisms underlying group structure remain poorly understood in colonial spiders. Assuming similar ecological benefits of group living, we address the question whether reduced dispersal shapes population structure in a colonial spider, Cyrtophora citricola (Araneidae). We analysed dispersal by studying settling decisions under semi-natural conditions in experimental trees with and without colonies, and in natural populations, we estimated dispersal and colony structure using population genetic analyses. The propensity to disperse decreased with increasing age in experimental colonies. Adult females did not disperse in the experiment. Sub-adult female spiders preferred trees with a colony to trees without a colony. Dispersal in third instar juveniles was influenced significantly by wind but not by the presence of a colony. Thus, we showed that being in a colony did not inhibit juvenile dispersal, but pre-mating females were philopatric. Genetic differentiation among colonies in natural populations was heterogeneous, colonies being either little or highly differentiated. The heterogeneous structure is likely caused by colony founding by one or a few females followed by dispersal among perennial colonies. Gene flow, however, was slightly male-biased. The experimental and indirect, genetic approaches combined showed that dispersal and the breeding system of C. citricola resemble that of solitary spiders, with juvenile dispersal occurring in both sexes, while the colonial distribution is maintained by female philopatry.  相似文献

Body temperatures, ambient water temperatures, light intensities and vertical positions (depth) of eight loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, were monitored by small recorders during internesting periods from 1991 through 1993 off Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Body temperatures of eight loggerhead turtles were higher than ambient water temperatures through-out their internesting periods. Light intensities were compared with body temperatures and no evidence was obtained to suggest that the raised body temperatures were caused by the direct influence of solar radiation. Body temperatures were kept higher than water temperatures in cloudy weather or even at night. Mean thermal differences between body and water temperatures were significantly different among individuals, and larger turtles had a greater mean thermal difference. Elevations in body temperatures of adult loggerhead turtles can reasonably be assumed to result from the accumulation of metabolically produced heat. Surfacing times (spent at depths shallower than 2 m) of seven turtles were only 10.3 to 38.9% of their internesting periods, with the exception of one turtle who spent 66.3% of her time at the surface. Loggerhead turtles did not seem to bask positively at the sea surface to absorb radiative heat.  相似文献
