Accumulation rates of Cd have been studied in the common mussel Mytilus edulis L. under different laboratory conditions. Semi-static and through-flow experiments were carried out at Cd concentrations of 200 ppb and 50/100 ppb in the water, respectively. A linear uptake of Cd throughout the experimental periods of 36 or 124 d was found in all experiments. The accumulation rate was 3.10 ppm d-1 at 50 ppb in the through-flow water experiment, 4.1 ppm d-1 in starved and 6.6 ppm d-1 in fed mussels in the semi-static experiments with 200 ppb Cd in the water. The Cd-accumulation rate in various fractions of soft parts decreased in the order: body>mantle>muscles. Elution patterns obtained from gel-filtrations showed an increasing amount of Cd-binding proteins (metallothioneins) when the body burden of Cd increased. The Cd content in the body fraction of mussels transferred to clean water for 42 d after first being exposed to Cd during 124 d decreased from 564 ppm on a dry weight basis to 417 ppm while the fraction of Cd bound to metallothioneins rose from 22 to 78% during the same period.  相似文献

Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase is a membrane-bound enzyme and is responsible for regulating cytosolic free calcium. In vitro and in vivo effects of cadmium were studied on Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase activity in plasma membrane/mitochondrial fraction of Penaeus monodon post larvae. In vitro studies revealed a concentration-dependent decrease in enzyme activity with an IC50 value of 11.02?µM. In vivo experiments were conducted by exposing the post larvae to 1/10th (0.12?ppm) and 1/5th (0.24?ppm) of LC50 values of cadmium for 30 days. Both ATPase activity and metal accumulation were estimated in post larvae exposed to 0.12 and 0.24?ppm of cadmium at different intervals of 24?h, 48?h, 96?h, 10 days and 30 days. ATPase activity showed a gradual decrease in post larvae on exposure to both the sub-lethal concentrations with respect to their controls and the decrease was significant (p?相似文献

The crab Carcinus maenas (L.) was exposed to radioactively labelled cadmium dissolved in seawater at concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 10 ppm, the latter concentration being toxic to the crabs (50% mortality after 12.3 days). Net accumulation of cadmium from solution was proportional to the level and time period of cadmium exposure. Total absorbed cadmium levels reached 0.0043 and 0.0412 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 40 days exposure to 0.1 and 1 ppm Cd, respectively, and 0.1115 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 12.3 days average exposure to 10 ppm Cd. The highest tissue concentration was found in the midgut gland, reaching 0.786 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 12.3 days average exposure to 10 ppm Cd. The midgut gland only contained about 10% of the total cadmium absorbed from solution, while the exoskeleton contained the bulk of obsorbed cadmium (59 to 80%) probably passively adsorbed onto the surface. When cadmium was absorbed by the crabs from a food source, the midgut gland contained 16.9% of the total absorbed cadmium whereas the exoskeleton now contained only 22.2%. Ten percent of the cadmium available in the food source (Artemia salina) was accumulated by the crabs. When placed in cadmium-free seawater, crabs that had accumulated cadmium from solution lost 69% of the absorbed cadmium in 10 days, mostly from the exoskeleton which lost 78% of its original absorbed cadmium concentration.  相似文献

Accumulation of cadmium by Artemia salina   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The relative importance of accumulation of cadmium by Artemia salina (L.) directly from solution and from ingested food has been studied at 3 cadmium concentrations (0.1, 1 and 10 ppm) under controlled experimental conditions. At each cadmium concentration, A. salina were exposed to cadmium in 4 ways; in solution; in solution in the presence of latex food particles; in solution with cadmium-rich Dunaliella tertiolecta as a food source; and to cadmium-rich D. tertiolecta alone. Net accumulation of cadmium by A. salina continued throughout 5 days exposure under all 4 conditions. When the brine shrimp were removed to cadmium-free conditions, their accumulated cadmium concentrations declined and levelled off to a stabilised plateau after 10 days. From consideration of these stabilised levels it was shown that at least 30% of cadmium accumulation directly from solution occurs via uptake through the alimentary tract. The ratio of cadmium accumulated from solution to cadmium accumulated from food was found to be 1:4.9, 1:6.7 and 1:1.1 at 0.1, 1 and 10 ppm Cd exposure, respectively. At lower cadmium exposures uptake from food is the major route for cadmium accumulation, but at higher exposures the cadmium-saturated food source displaced cadmium-rich water from the gut and therefore actually inhibited cadmium accumulation. This study, therefore, concludes that the food chain will be the major source of cadmium as long as the previous trophic level has the ability to accumulate the metal to such an extent as to make it more available to the consumer than by direct uptake from seawater.  相似文献

Toxicities of an azo dye methyl red and a heavy metal copper (Cu) were quantified, using growth and mortality as end points, in four plant species and three animal species by subjecting them to short-term (4 days for animals, 10 days for plants) static bioassays. Lemna aequinoctialis Welwitch (EC50: 7–16 ppm) was found to be the most sensitive species for methyl red, Ceratophyllum demersum L. (EC50: 25 ppm) and Lactuca sativa L. (EC50: 56 ppm) were intermediate, while Oryza sativa L. shows reduction in seedling vigor (9–27%) of <50%, being the least sensitive amongst the tested plant species. Methyl red toxicity is almost 3–5-fold higher in growing medium (pH = 5.8–6.0), even at high nutrient levels, while Cu toxicity is higher in nutrient-poor alkaline medium at alkaline pH (8.3–8.7; EC50: Ceratophyllum = 104–200 ppb; Lemna = 100–170 ppb) compared to nutrient-rich acidic medium (pH = 5.4–5.7; EC50: Ceratophyllum = 2600–3175 ppb; Lemna = 4350–4715 ppb). Rice tolerance (EC50: 6500 ppb) was found to be higher than hydrophytes while lettuce was most tolerant to Cu. Fish sensitivity toward the test chemicals was almost parallel to Ceratophyllum and Lemna [Gambusia affinis Baird and Gerard (LC50: 250 ppb for Cu) and Poecilia reticulata Peters (LC50: 24 ppm for methyl red)]. Similar to the plants, dye toxicity increased markedly (LC50: 7 ppm) in the acidic medium (pH = 6.0). Amongst the tested organisms, Daphnia was found to be most sensitive to methyl red (EC50: 6 ppm) while its sensitivity to Cu (EC50: 230 ppb) was similar to hydrophytes and fish. Initially, the combination of dye and Cu (at their sublethal concentrations) had additive effects in duckweed, while dye concentration ruled afterward. These results indicate that hydrophytes and animals are equally sensitive toward the test chemicals. Dye toxicity in hydrophytes and fish was pH dependent, while in the case of Cu, it is related to the nutrient status of the growth medium of plants.  相似文献

Larvae and adults of an Hawaiian bivalve, Isognomon californicum, were exposed to sublethal, environmentally realistic concentrations of cadmium (2 and 20 ppb) for 28 d, and the accumulation of cadmium was evaluated. The concentrations of cadmium were expressed in terms of total cadmium (tissue and shell concentrations combined) and tissue cadmium. The accumulation rates of larvae were one to two orders of magnitude greater than adult rates. This study suggests that the faster uptake rates of larvae may explain why larvae are more sensitive than adults. Furthermore, the magnitude of differences between larval and adult accumulation rates may be related to metabolic rate. When larvae and adults were exposed to cadmium for only 14 d, followed by a 14 d depuration period, a substantial loss of cadmium was observed during the depuration period. Possible accumulation mechanisms and their similarity between larvae and adults are discussed.  相似文献

Absorption of 14C-glycine from ambient sea water across the body surface of the oligochaete Enchytraeus albidus Henle was, after 6 h preincubation, significantly reduced in the presence of 0.1 to 0.15 ppm mercury, 0.25 ppm copper, 1.5 ppm silver, and 2 ppm cadmium. Addition of heavy metal salts reduced maximum uptake rates (V max ), without affecting transport constants (K t ). Influx of 14C-glycine remained unchanged in the presence of up to 10 ppm aluminium, chromium, iron, lead, molybdenum, vanadium, and zinc. Effects of up to 150 ppm nickel, manganese, cobalt and selenium were negligible. Inhibition of glycine absorption by mercury and cadmium in the polychaete Nereis diversicolor Müller is almost identical with results presented for E. albidus. Transintegumentary solute absorption in soft-bodied marine invertebrates obviously represents a suitable biological function for studies on heavy metal toxicity. The close relationship between rates of heavy metal absorption, inhibition of transintegumentary glycine uptake, and acute toxicity is discussed.  相似文献

Disposal of waste into aquatic ecosystems may cause microalgae to be exposed to various metals, e.g. copper and cadmium. The effects caused by combinations of metals may be more serious. Evaluations of subcellular fate, bioaccumulation, and biological effects of metals on aquatic organisms are generally derived from experiments with individual metals. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of exposure of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to copper and cadmium in combination on subcellular accumulation, distribution, and growth. The algae were exposed for 72 h to copper at concentrations of 13 – 25 µmol L?1, cadmium at about 6 µmol L?1, and combinations thereof. The levels of copper and cadmium in subcellular organelles, heat-denaturated protein, metal-rich granules, and heat-stable protein were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Exposure of C. pyrenoidosa to copper and cadmium in combination inhibited growth more strongly than copper and cadmium individually. Highest accumulation was observed in metal-rich granules and heat-stable proteins. Administration of both metals in combination affected their subcellular distribution: copper was mainly distributed into the metal-rich granules (70%–80%) and heat-stable proteins (9%–24%), cadmium in the metal-rich granules (88%–98%).  相似文献

Growth rates of excised apical segments from three Chondrus crispus Stackhouse clones were rapid, reproducible and easily measured using simple equipment. Clonal segments exhibited a high degree of phenotypic stability, with coefficients of variation in growth rates being typically less than 5%. Sensitivity of the assay was demonstrated using 24-h pulses of the toxicants Cu2+ (10 to 150 ppb) and the molluscicide Bayluscide (100 to 500 ppb). As a further demonstration of applicability of this assay system, growth rates were measured over two consecutive 24-h photoperiods using a normally pigmented red gametophytic clone and a green colored mutant derived from it. Growth rates were highest in the first hours of the light phase for both clones, with growth of the green mutant being consistently inferior to that of the normally pigmented one. Significant changes were measured with intervals as short as 4 h using only five apical segments for each treatment. The C. crispus assay described is sensitive, relatively rapid, and statistically robust when applied to toxicant testing in seawater and to physiological studies.  相似文献

Larval stages of the estuarine mud crab Eurypanopeus depressus were exposed to either 10 ppb cadmium or 1.8 ppb mercury in a flow-through rearing system. Development time from the megalopa to juvenile crab was extended in the cadmium-exposed individuals. Cadmium elevated the swimming rates of the late zoeal stages, while mercury depressed swimming rates of the early stages. Increased mortality of Stage I zoeae was observed after 24 h exposure to cadmium; increased mortality was also noted for megalopa and early crab stages reared in cadmium.Contribution No. 212 of the Belle W. Accumulation of waterborne cadmium in Littorina littorea, Mytilus edulis and Carcinus maenas (collected in 1988 and 1989 around the island of Funen, Denmark) was investigated in a matrix of salinities (10 to 30) and calcium concentrations (2.9 to 8.9 mM Ca++). Cadmium accumulation rates in soft parts of L. littorina, soft parts and shells of M. edulis and whole bodies and exoskeletons of C. maenas decreased with increasing salinity. Changes in the calcium concentrations accounted for 72% of the salinity effect on cadmium accumulation rates in L. littorina, whereas calcium concentrations had little or no effect on cadmium accumulation in M. edulis. Cadmium accumulation in the whole body of C. maenas was affected equally by calcium concentrations and total salinity, whereas accumulation in the exoskeleton was mainly affected by changes in total salinity. Individual variability in cadmium accumulation in the organs of C. maenas was greater than the variation attributable either to changes in ambient calcium concentrations or total salinity. An appreciable amount of the inter-individual variability in the cadmium accumulation in all three species was correlated with wet:dry weight ratios of the tissues and size of the organisms.  相似文献

The effect of increasing cadmium concentration (10, 100 and 1000 μmol dm‐3) on the growth, leaf area, content of assimilation pigments, cadmium content and the regulatory ability of the tissue of maize plants was investigated.

The results obtained document, already after 6 days, a significant decrease of dry weight, reduction of leaf area, chlorophyll a and b as well as carotenoids in plants grown in the nutrient solution containing 1000 μmol dm ‐3 of cadmium. A highly significant inhibition of growth, leaf area and assimilation pigments in plants growing in the nutrient solutions with 100 and 10 μmol dm‐3 of cadmium was registered after 17 days of cultivation. In plants growing in the nutrient solution containing 100 μmol dm‐3 of cadmium a demonstrable reduction of the content of assimilation pigments was registered after 11 days of culture.

With increasing cadmium concentration in the nutrient solution as well as in the plant tissue after 6 and 17 days of culture both the range of the regulatory zone and the extent of optimum pH increased into the acid region. The pH values of the isoelectric point decreased with increasing cadmium content in the solution.  相似文献

Mytilus edulis planulatus (Lamarck) were collected from Howden, South-east Tasmania in autumn 1981. Interaction effects of cadmium, copper and zinc during accumulation by mussels exposed for ten days to all three metals simultaneously were examined in a series of experiments in which each metal was tested at three concentrations. In general, interaction effects were most evident at the highest concentrations tested (20 g l-1 Cd; 20 g l-1 Cu; 200 g l-1 Zn) and led to a reduction in the accumulation of cadmium and an increase in that of copper and zinc. More specifically, high levels of zinc caused a decrease in cadmium uptake and an increase in copper accumulation. The presence of copper resulted in depressed cadmium accumulation while zinc accumulation increased. Cadmium tended to enhance zinc accumulation, but copper accumulation was only affected to any great extent when zinc was also present.  相似文献

Effects of Dimilin® (TH 6040), an insect growth regulator which interferes with the formation of the insect cuticle, were studied on the larval development of Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) and Sesarma reticulatum (Say) (Crustacea: Brachyura). When larvae were exposed to 0.5 (R. harrisii only), 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 ppb Dimilin from hatching to the first crab stage, survival in both species decreased in relation to increased concentrations of Dimilin. Survival of R. harrisii larvae wa significantly lower at 1 ppb and higher levels compared with control experiments, and in S. reticulatum a significant decrease in survival began at the 3 ppb level. At 10 ppb Dimilin, no larvae survived to the megalopa stage in either of the two species. The results indicate that early stage larvae of R. harrisii are more sensitive to Dimilin than those of S. reticulatum. When R. harrisii larvae were treated with 10 ppb Dimilin during the intermolt period of each of the 4 zoeal stages, nearly all larvae died during molting to the succeeding stage. First zoeal larvae of R. harrisii exposed to 10 ppb Dimilin at various days during the intermolt period were more sensitive to the compound late than early in the period. It is suggested that Dimilin also may interfere with the formation of the cuticle in crab larvae.  相似文献

The estuarine copepod Acartia tonsa was collected on several occasions between 4 April and 14 August 1985 from Terrebonne Bay, Louisiana (29°08N; 90°36W) and the effects in its diet of suspended sediments, collected from the same area, were measured at five different concentrations of sediment (100 to 1 000 ppm) and six phytoplankton concentrations (500 to 13 000 cells ml-1 Thalassiosira weissflogii). Egg production rate was used as an index of diet quality. At low phytoplankton concentrations (500 cells ml-1), and at intermediate phytoplankton concentrations (2 000 cells ml-1) for previously starved copepods, egg production was reduced by up to 40% at a sediment concentration of 250 ppm and further reduced at higher sediment concentrations. At higher food concentrations (4 000 to 13 000 cells ml-1), suspended sediment had no effect on egg production rates at sediment concentrations up to 500 ppm. Rates were reduced only at the highest sediment concentration of 1 000 ppm. Under most natural conditions, suspended sediment would not significantly affect egg production rates in A. tonsa.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the synergistic and antagonistic effects of permethrin on the bioaccumulation of cadmium in zebra cichlid (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum). Zebra cichlid was exposed to various sublethal concentrations of permethrin combined with cadmium chloride for 15 days. Although at the lowest concentrations, permethrin (0.40 µg L?1) decreased the bioconcentration potential of cadmium in fish, bioaccumulation of cadmium increased along with increasing concentrations of permethrin (0.80–1.20 µg L?1). However, the magnitude of changes in the accumulation of cadmium in the fishes simultaneously exposed to 1.60 µg L?1 permetrin and cadmium chloride was similar to the cadmium levels observed in fishes after exposure to the cadmium chloride alone. The results of this study suggest that the synergistic effects of permethrin on the bioaccumulation of cadmium highly depend on the concentrations of this pesticide in water.  相似文献

Cell growth of a coastal marine diatom, Chaetoceros sociale, in the presence of different premixed organic-Fe(III) complexes [EDTA-Fe(III) (100:1 and 2:1), citric-Fe(III) (100:1) and fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1, 0.2 and 1 ppm C)] and solid amorphous hydrous ferric oxide [am-Fe(III) or Fe(III) hydroxide] were experimentally measured in culture experiments at 10 °C under 3000 lux fluorescent light. Fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1 and 0.2 ppm C) and citric-Fe(III) (100:1) induced maximal cell yields of C. sociale. The order of cell yields was: fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1 and 0.2 ppm C) ≥ citric-Fe(III) (100:1) > EDTA-Fe(III) (2:1) ≫ solid am-Fe(III) > EDTA-Fe(III) (100:1) ≫ fulvic-Fe(III) (1 ppm C). The short-term iron uptake rates by C. sociale in fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1 and 0.2 ppm C) and citric-Fe(III) (100:1) media were about five to six times faster than those in EDTA-Fe(III) (100:1) and solid am-Fe(III) media. The dissociative precipitation rates of premixed organic-Fe(III) complexes in seawater at 10 °C were determined by simple filtration (0.025 μm) involving γ-activity measurements of 59Fe. The order of estimated initial Fe(III) dissociative precipitation rates of these organic-Fe(III) complexes in seawater were nearly consistent with those of cell yields in the culture experiments and short-term iron uptake rates by C. sociale [except for fulvic-Fe(III) (1 ppm C) medium]. In fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1 and 0.2 ppm C), citric-Fe(III) (100:1) and EDTA-Fe(III) (2:1) media, the concentrations of dissolved organic-Fe(III) complexes in initial culture experiments are prone to supersaturate under the culture conditions. The supersaturated dissolved organic-Fe(III) complex in seawater supplies biologically available inorganic Fe(III) species in culture media through its dissociation at high pH and high levels of seawater cations. Therefore, the natural dissolved organic-Fe(III) complexes supplied by riverine input may play an important role in supplying bioavailable iron in estuarine mixing system and coastal waters. The capacity of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin to accumulate pollutants above ambient levels was examined in two North Adriatic lagoons with respect to fluoride, copper, lead, chromium and mercury. Levels in soft tissues ranged from 138 to 312 ppm (dry weight) for fluoride, 41 to 109 ppm for copper, 7.1 to 11.7 ppm for lead, 2.10 to 3.89 ppm for chromium, and from 0.96 to 1.35 ppm for mercury. The concentration factor was of the order of 102 for fluoride, 103 for copper, and possibly higher than 103 for lead, chromium and mercury. The differences of about 2:1 in the fluoride and copper concentrations in the waters of the two lagoons were clearly reflected by the levels in the barnacles. B. amphitrite that had set on experimental panels had levels similar to those found in specimens collected from long-term natural populations as early as 42 days after immersion of the panels. Compared with literature data, the accumulation levels found in B. amphitrite for fluoride were among the highest known for invertebrates; the values for copper and lead were considerable, but exceeded by others published for B. balanoides; the results for chromium and mercury were one order of magnitude lower than values reported for other suspension-feeders or indicator organisms. B. amphitrite appears to possess most of the properties considered essential for a biological indicator. Eventual determination of the response time of the barnacle to changes in environmental level could profitably be carried out utilizing experimental panels.  相似文献

Rangia cuneata were collected every six weeks for one year from February 1984 to January 1985 at the mouth of the Dog River, Alabama, USA and dosed with 200 ppb [9–14C] anthracene at 10, 20, and 30°C. Uptake rates of [9–14C] anthracene measured over a 15-h period were not significantly different (P>0.05), but depuration rates measured over a two-week period were significantly higher with increasing temperature. The seasonal changes in rates were related to the annual changes in biochemical composition of the clams associated with the reproductive cycle. Lipid levels were nearly constant over the year, averaging 88.0±2.0 mg/g dry wt. The level of carbohydrates peaked in July, a month before the maximal gonad index, and decreased steadily through September during spawning. The level of proteins increased from 76.6 mg/g dry wt prior to spawning to 138.3 mg/g dry wt after spawning. Uptake rates were highest in late summer during the peak of gametogenesis and decreased during spawning in the fall. Depuration rates remained low from March through August and rapidly increased to the highest levels during the fall spawning period. The results suggest that the stage of the reproductive cycle, with its associated biochemical changes, and temperature play an important role in the pattern of accumulation and release of anthracene in R. cuneata.  相似文献

The developmental stages from megalopa to third crab of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun were tested in 12 combinations of cadmium (0, 50, and 150 ppb) and salinity (10, 20, 30, and 40) at 25°C. A reduction in survival and a significant delay in development from megalopa to third crab occurred within each salinity regime in 50 ppb compared with the control. Comparison of the delay in development within each salinity regime revealed that the sublethal effect of cadmium was most pronounced in the salinities normally preferred by C. sapidus. A similar comparison within each cadmium concentration, however, showed that the developmental time from megalopa to third crab was approximately the same irrespective of salinity. The developmental stages from hatch to first crab of the mud-crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) were examined in 63 combinations of cadmium (0, 50, and 150 ppb), salinity (10, 20, and 30), constant temperature (20°, 25°, 30°, and 35°C) and cycling temperature (20° to 25°C, 25° to 30°C, and 30° to 35°C). The results indicated that cycling temperatures may have a stimulating effect on survival of the larvae compared to constant temperatures, both in the presence and in the absence of cadmium. Effects of cadmium and salinity and their interaction on the survival of the larvae from zoeae to megalopa were documented at most of the temperatures by analyses of variance. The zoeal larvae were more susceptible to cadmium than the megalopa. Effects of different combinations of cadmium and salinity on the duration of larval development were assessed by a t-test.  相似文献
