Sleepy lizards are monogamous skinks which show high pair fidelity. This study reveals inter- and intrasexual differences in homeward orientation performance in this lizard. Male and female lizards were displaced during three phases of the spring activity period, the pre-pairing, pairing/mating, and post-pairing periods. All groups (with the exception of post-pairing males) were significantly oriented homewards, but males were significantly better oriented towards home than females during the pairing period. Furthermore, males were significantly better homeward oriented during the pre-pairing and pairing periods than in the post-pairing period. Similar results were observed for rate of movement away from the release site. In sleepy lizards, sex-based differences in homing behaviour are unlikely to be attributable to differences in the area of familiarity, or availability of orientation mechanisms. However differences in homing motivation may explain these differences. Males may miss mating if absent from the home range during the pre-pairing and pairing periods, while females may still be able to obtain a mating even when absent. Females however may be more motivated than males to return to the familiar home range during the post-pairing period to ensure efficient feeding during internal embryo development. Summary Territorial fidelity and competition between males was studied in a population of individually marked willow warblers (Phylloscopus trochilus). After spending the winter in Africa males arrive in the study area in late April or the beginning of May. They can be separated into two categories, old colour-banded males that return for a new breeding attempt, and birds that are new to the study area. These new birds could either be birds that had bred the previous year returning to a different site, or more likely 1-year-old birds returning for their first breeding attempt. Old males show high site fidelity and are successful in retaining their territories from the preceding year. The few old males that switched territories between years seemed to do so in response to reduced breeding success in the preceding year. However, in 13 out of 14 cases when a new resident was already established on the previous resident's territory, the old male was successful in evicting the new resident. In a removal experiment both old and new birds were removed from their territories and then released when a replacement male had been established. All old males successfully managed to reclaim their original territories after escalated contests. None of the new males were successful and no fights were observed.  相似文献

This study characterizes the flow field at a spawning site located at the shelf break of a Caribbean island for the Epinephelus guttatus (red hind grouper) in relation to this species spawning events. In order to understand the oceanographic dynamics targeted by the fishes, current measurements were profiled throughout the water column for almost a year at the spawning site. The characteristics of the flow field and its evolution after spawning were investigated by using a numerical ocean model that resolved the observed tide and simulated the island scale flow where passive, neutrally buoyant virtual particles were released for 10 days to trace the flow pathways.Observed currents during the spawning period revealed that the flow was vertically sheared, to the south and weakest at the bottom, and to the west or east at the surface. The tidal analysis revealed that the flow at the time of spawning was directed across and on-shelf, although weaker close to the bottom. The model showed that the initial on-shelf transport was counteracted by the bottom flow directed to the shelf break, where virtual particles were entrained by the downwelling flow. A significant percent of particles resided less than two hundred meters deep, in the vicinity of the chlorophyll maximum and returned to the shelf break, close to the release location within 8-10 days. This journey was largely controlled by the timing between downwelling at the spawning site and upwelling further east at the shelf break, which was driven by the coupling between wind and tide induced vertical movements at the shelf break and deeper. The release location, vertical rotation of its flow field, and its transport properties were shown to be relatively resilient to the passage of transient sub-mesoscale eddies as well as to acute mesoscale flow reversals, suggesting that physical retention is maximized in the area surrounding the spawning site.  相似文献

A comparative study of the otolith microstructure and microchemistry of Anguilla marmorata glass eels in the western North Pacific (Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia) determined the timing of metamorphosis and age at recruitment to freshwater habitats with a view to learning about the early life history and recruitment of this species of tropical anguillid eel, which has a wide range throughout much of the western Pacific and parts of the Indian Ocean. Three new samples (from Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia) were analyzed and statistically compared along with two other previously published samples that were analyzed using the same techniques. Ages at metamorphosis and recruitment, respectively, were 123ᆡ.4 days (mean-SD) and 154ᆥ.0 days in specimens from Japan, 116ᆢ.6 days and 145ᆣ.6 days in those from Taiwan, 120ᆡ.0 days and 154ᆡ.5 days in the Philippines stock and 132Nj.7 days and 159ᆟ.7 days, and 120ᆣ.6 days and 152ᆣ.2 days in the Indonesian stock. The average duration of the period of metamorphosis estimated from otolith microstructure was very similar (15-17 days) in the specimens from all locations. A close linear relationship was found between the ages at metamorphosis and recruitment at all locations, suggesting that individuals that metamorphosed earlier were recruited to freshwater habitats at a younger age. Back-calculated hatching dates ranged over about 6 months of the year, suggesting that this species may spawn throughout much of the year. It is hypothesized that specimens from all four sites are from the same spawning population originating in a spawning area in the North Equatorial Current of the western North Pacific.  相似文献

Consistent, widespread fine-scale preferences for breeding sites may favour the emergence of intrasexual associations and hence sociality. Pairwise association was defined for a terrestrially breeding phocid seal in which intraseasonal colony mixing is limited and mothers spend only 3 weeks ashore breeding. Interannual associations may occur between pairs of breeding female grey seals at North Rona, Scotland because of pupping site fidelity, 90% return rates and limited variability in parturition dates that individual mothers show. Associations can occur when mothers are found together irrespective of location, or because of joint preferences for locations. Mothers were sedentary and were unlikely to interact if they are separated by >20 m. Using spatial and temporal association criteria, 160 of 176 of known mothers had intraseasonal associations with at least one other mother, with 14 of 126 (11.1%) of associations repeated in 2 years. The likelihood of female association in 2 years as a result of site fidelity, parturition date variation and pupping site quality was modelled. Interannual association between mothers that changed their pupping sites by up to the median observed pupping site fidelity (<40 m) was indistinguishable from our models predictions. However, the number of mothers that showed interannual association after displacements of >40 m from their previous years pupping sites was almost five times greater than the model predicted. We conclude that active association between adult female grey seals is not determined solely by habitat preference, and argue that examination of simple sociality in temporarily aggregating species can contribute significantly to socioecological models of social evolution.Communicated by F. Otolith microstructure and chemical composition (Sr:Ca ratios) of the European conger eel (Conger conger) were examined during the larval developmental stages by scanning electron microscopy and wavelength dispersive spectrometer. Back-calculated hatching dates from the otolith microstructure of the developing leptocephali indicate a protracted spawning season from December to June. The early age of our developing specimens captured south of the Azores Islands suggests that the conger eel has another spawning area closer to Azores than the Mediterranean. Otolith increment width, which was relatively constant and narrow in the developing leptocephalus stage, increased sharply at age 170-250 days. Sr:Ca ratios in the otolith, which increased during the developing leptocephalus stage, showed a rapid drop coinciding with the increase in increment width. These coincidental changes were regarded as the onset of metamorphosis for this species. A close linear relationship between the age at metamorphosis and otolith growth rate indicates that the faster-growing larvae metamorphose earlier, suggesting that somatic growth should play an important role in the timing of metamorphosis. As shown in earlier work, the existence of an otolith marginal zone with unclear rings during metamorphosis prevents an accurate estimate of the larval stage duration of this species.  相似文献

The ecological impacts of recreational fisheries are of growing concern and pose a number of unique management challenges. Here we report on our efforts to provide guidance for managing a recreational fishery for taimen, the giant Eurasian trout (Hucho taimen) in Mongolia. This species has declined dramatically across its range of Siberia and Central Asia, and is currently listed as endangered in Mongolia. Strong populations persist in remote regions of Mongolia because of limited anthropogenic impacts and harvest, though interest in the fishery is expanding rapidly. Current fishing regulations list the spring "opening date" for taimen fishing as 15 June, although regulations have not been consistently enforced, partially because taimen spawn much earlier than 15 June in much of the country. Through a combination of statistical models, climate data, knowledge of taimen biology, and geographic information systems (GIS), we model taimen spawning dates for potential habitat in Mongolia. A parametric bootstrap procedure was used to simulate variability in spawning date derived from inter-annual climate variability and model error, from which we estimated the date in which taimen spawning is predicted to occur with 90% confidence. We recommend the designation of three fisheries management zones, with corresponding opening dates of 20 May, 1 June, and 15 June. Our fishery opening date recommendations are less restrictive than existing regulations. Provided there is little or no catch-and-release fishing mortality, this approach serves both environmental and human needs by protecting taimen during the reproductive period, while still allowing a post-spawning catch-and-release fishery that benefits local economies and generates revenue (through fishing concession fees) for local conservation efforts.  相似文献

How migratory birds decide when to leave a stopover site is important to the understanding of bird migration strategies. Our study looks at how body condition and the weather affect the decision to depart on nocturnal migratory flight. During two autumn migration seasons (2002–2003), we radio tracked 51 first-year European robins, Erithacus rubecula, at a stopover site on the Courish Spit (Eastern Baltic) from the first day after landing until their migratory departure. The tagged robins stopped over for 1–14 days. There was no clear relationship between stopover duration and energetic condition on arrival. Weather conditions (wind, precipitation, and cloud cover) on departure differed measurably between years. In 2002, robins took off mainly under following winds and clear skies. In 2003, there were mainly light head winds and partially cloudy or overcast skies. This could be explained by the year-specific role of weather factors in making the decision to depart. In both years, robins making short (1–2 days) stopovers took off in more varied weather situations than those individuals with long stopovers. This suggests that robins from the former group were more inclined to continue with migration than longer-stay birds that, apart from re-fuelling, could be waiting for favourable weather. The lack of a relationship between stopover duration and body condition and some departures under unfavourable weather conditions suggest that endogenous spatiotemporal programmes may play an important role in controlling stopover duration in robins.  相似文献

Reproduction of the ophiuroid Ophiactis resiliens Lyman 1879, a common species in the shallow waters around Australia, was examined over 1 year in two populations near Sydney, New South Wales. Gametogenesis was documented by histological examination of the gonads. Vitellogenesis in females and spermatocyte proliferation in males started in February and March. O. resiliens had an annual spawning period from May to September/October with peak gamete release from May to July. Thereafter, spawning occurred in some specimens through November. Gravid gonads were present for approximately 2 months longer in O. resiliens from Clovelly Bay than in those from Little Bay. At both sites spawning was episodic and gametogenesis continued through most of the spawning season. Most specimens (50–100%) collected from November to March had indeterminate/recovery stage gonads, the sex of which, could not be determined. The timing of gametogenic renewal during these months varied among individuals. O. resiliens has a 3-month planktonic stage and the presence of juveniles, 0.5 –1.5 mm disk diameter, in the coralline algal turf at Little Bay from February to May, suggests that settlement occurs in summer and autumn at this site. In contrast, juveniles were rarely encountered in coralline turf at Clovelly.  相似文献

In order to examine the variation in migratory history of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, we measured otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations by X-ray electron microprobe analysis in 5 yellow eels and 20 silver eels collected in the coastal waters of the Amakusa Islands during the spawning migration season. Three migratory types categorized as river eels, estuarine eels and sea eels were found. Estuarine eels were dominant (52%), sea eels were the second most abundant (28%), followed by river eels (20%). The low proportion of river eels from the spawning migration season suggested that the estuarine and sea eels that inhabit the nearby coastal areas might make a larger reproductive contribution to the next generation in this area, although similar analyses should be made over the wide-range geographic distribution of this species, to provide better estimates of the reproductive contributions by different migratory patterns of the population.  相似文献

Point sources of pollution (e.g. industrial and municipal outfalls) may produce ecological impacts at distant locations if pollutants affect dispersive propagules. We used laboratory experiments to determine how water-column exposure to produced water (=the aqueous fraction of oil and gas production that is typically discharged into coastal waters) influences the colonization potential of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) zoospores on the bottom. Zoospores were maintained in suspension at relatively low densities in 18-liter containers and exposed to one of five concentrations of produced water for varying amounts of time. Zoospore swimming generally decreased with increasing produced-water concentration and exposure duration; however, the specific pattern of decrease differed between experimental trials done on different dates. The effect of exposure duration on the ability of swimming zoospores to attach to plastic dishes placed on the bottom varied with produced-water concentration. Zoospores placed in produced-water concentrations of 1 and 10% showed a steady decline in their ability to attach with increased exposure; lower concentrations of produced water had no such effects. The percentage of zoospores that germinated after attachment varied tremendously with exposure duration and date of experimental trial. Zoospores that settled during the first 12 h after release had very poor rates of germination, indicative of a short precompetent period. Surprisingly, exposure of suspended zoospores to high concentrations of produced water during the first 12 h reduced this precompetent period and greatly improved germination success on the bottom. The magnitude of this enhancement, however, varied among dates. The results suggest that adverse effects of discharging produced water on planktonic zoospores of giant kelp would most likely be limited to the immediate vicinity of the outfall.  相似文献

Of the 18 359 American lobsters (Homarus americanus) tagged and released at three locations in the Bay of Fundy during 1977–1980, 5 375 lobsters (29.3%) were recaptured within 6 yr of release. Mature lobsters (95-mm carapace length, CL) on average moved significantly greater distances than immature lobsters (<95-mm CL). Many (16.4%) of the mature lobsters were recaptured >92.6 km (50 nautical miles) from the release sites; the farthest distance moved was 798 km for a male at liberty for 3.5 yr. Examination of the direction of movements indicates some intermixing of lobsters within the Bay of Fundy, and throughout the Gulf of Maine and the adjoining Continental Shelf and slopes. Mature lobsters were recaptured in deeper waters during winter than during summer. The seasonal shallow-deep migration of mature lobsters in the Bay of Fundy is possibly associated with maximizing degree-days for molting, growth, gonadal development, and egg development. In some areas, mature females on average moved farther and seasonally earlier into deeper waters than mature males. Although the seasonal migration resulted in many lobsters returning to the original release area year after year, some lobsters made extensive long-distance movements away from the Bay of Fundy. Temperature-dependent, seasonal deep-shallow migration can explain both the local returns and the long distance migrations of mature lobsters in the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine. To achieve appropriate seasonal temperature regimes, mature lobsters have to move different distances and directions, depending on local topography.  相似文献

The growth history and recruitment dynamics of eel (Anguilla japonica) elvers were studied. Observations were based on growth increments in sagittal otoliths of elvers collected from Shuang-Chi River estuary off northeastern Taiwan, from November 1985 to February 1986. Total lengths of elvers upon arrival at the estuary were similar in most case; mean total lengths were from 55.99 to 59.06 mm. Daily ages of elvers at arrival ranged from 112.8±9.4 (±SD) to 156.5±13.5 d, indicating that migration of eel larvae from their oceanic spawning ground to the estuary requires 4 to 5 mo. Elver hatching dates, back-calculated from estimated daily ages, indicated that the spawning season lasted 5 mo (from late June to early October). Furthermore, the earlier eels spawned, the earlier elvers reached the estuary. The transition in growth history during the larval stage was obvious, as indicated from the change in increment width in elver otoliths. The inverse correlation between daily age and mean daily growth rates of fish length and otolith indicated that the age of elvers upon arrival at the estuary was susceptible to larval growth rate. In other words, the time taken on migration from oceanic spawning ground to the estuary was shorter for fast-growing larvae than for slowgrowing ones.  相似文献

Abstract: Species that have temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD) often produce highly skewed offspring sex ratios contrary to long‐standing theoretical predictions. This ecological enigma has provoked concern that climate change may induce the production of single‐sex generations and hence lead to population extirpation. All species of sea turtles exhibit TSD, many are already endangered, and most already produce sex ratios skewed to the sex produced at warmer temperatures (females). We tracked male loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) from Zakynthos, Greece, throughout the entire interval between successive breeding seasons and identified individuals on their breeding grounds, using photoidentification, to determine breeding periodicity and operational sex ratios. Males returned to breed at least twice as frequently as females. We estimated that the hatchling sex ratio of 70:30 female to male for this rookery will translate into an overall operational sex ratio (OSR) (i.e., ratio of total number of males vs females breeding each year) of close to 50:50 female to male. We followed three male turtles for between 10 and 12 months during which time they all traveled back to the breeding grounds. Flipper tagging revealed the proportion of females returning to nest after intervals of 1, 2, 3, and 4 years were 0.21, 0.38, 0.29, and 0.12, respectively (mean interval 2.3 years). A further nine male turtles were tracked for short periods to determine their departure date from the breeding grounds. These departure dates were combined with a photoidentification data set of 165 individuals identified on in‐water transect surveys at the start of the breeding season to develop a statistical model of the population dynamics. This model produced a maximum likelihood estimate that males visit the breeding site 2.6 times more often than females (95%CI 2.1, 3.1), which was consistent with the data from satellite tracking and flipper tagging. Increased frequency of male breeding will help ameliorate female‐biased hatchling sex ratios. Combined with the ability of males to fertilize the eggs of many females and for females to store sperm to fertilize many clutches, our results imply that effects of climate change on the viability of sea turtle populations are likely to be less acute than previously suspected.  相似文献

Using tracking radars, we investigated the variability of flight directions of long-distance nocturnal passerine migrants across seasons (spring versus autumn migration) and sites at the southern (56° N) and northern (68° N) ends of the Scandinavian Peninsula (Lund versus Abisko). Whilst most migrants at Lund are on passage to and from breeding sites in Fennoscandia, the majority of the migrants at Abisko are close to their breeding sites, and migration at Abisko thus to a large degree reflects initial departure from breeding sites (autumn) or final approach to breeding destinations (spring). The radar data were used to test predictions about differences in orientation and wind drift effects between adult and juvenile birds (a large proportion of autumn migrants consists of juvenile birds on their first journey), between situations far away from or near the goals and between different phases of migration (initial departure, en route passage, final approach to goal). The concentrations (both total and within-night concentrations) of flight directions differed significantly between seasons as well as sites, with the highest concentration at Lund in spring (mean vector length of track directions, r = 0.79) and lowest at Abisko during spring (r = 0.35). Partial wind drift and partial compensation were recorded at Lund, with a similar effect size in spring and autumn, whilst possible wind drift effects at Abisko were obscured by the large directional scatter at this site. The results from Lund support the prediction that the high proportion of juveniles in autumn contributes to increase the directional scatter during this season, whilst there was no support for predictions of differential wind drift effects between seasons and situations with different goal distances. The most striking and surprising result was the exceedingly large scatter of flight directions at Abisko, particularly in spring. We suggest that such an exaggerated scatter may be associated with final approach orientation, where migrants reach their specific goals from all various directions by final navigation within a more wide-ranging goal region. The larger scatter of autumn flight directions at Abisko compared to Lund may be due to exploratory flights in variable directions being more common at initial departure from breeding sites than later during migratory passage. These surprising results highlight the importance of studying and analysing orientation during final approach to (and initial departure from) migratory goals for understanding the orientation systems of migratory birds.  相似文献

The reproductive ecology of female Hawaiian damselfish Dascyllus albisella (Gill) was studied at Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii (21°27'N; 157°47'W) during two peak reproductive seasons (June–September 1997, July–August 1998). In both years, spawning occurred cyclically every 5–7 days, with all spawning in the study area in each cycle concluding within 2–3 days. The study period encompassed 16 spawning cycles in 1997 and 10 cycles in 1998. Some females spawned in almost all cycles, whereas others spawned in as few as one. Mean spawning interval of individual females ranged from 6.4 to 11.7 days in 1997 and from 5.5 to 29.0 days in 1998. Batch fecundity increased exponentially with body length, and ranged from 23,100 to 52,800. Spawning duration increased linearly with body length and ranged from 20 to 286 min. On a single day, large females spawned earlier than small females. Females mated with several different males over a season, but typically mated with only one male on a single spawning day. Female spawning frequency and interval, spawning duration, batch fecundity, as well as diel timing of spawning in D. albisella were comparable to those reported for other large, planktivorous, non-territorial damselfishes.  相似文献

The early life history of the American conger eel, Conger oceanicus, was studied using otolith microstructure and chemical composition in metamorphosing leptocephali collected from New Jersey estuarine waters. The age of leptocephali was estimated by counting daily growth increments. Age of early metamorphosing leptocephali at recruitment to the estuary ranged from 155 to 183 days, indicating that migration of conger eel leptocephali from their oceanic spawning ground to the estuary requires 5–6 months. Back-calculated hatching dates suggest that the spawning season lasted 3 months, from late October to mid-December. However, in the late metamorphic leptocephali, the presence of an unclear peripheral zone in the otolith prevents the accurate estimation of the larval stage duration. The calcium content was almost constant throughout the otoliths. Both strontium and Sr:Ca ratios increased with age, but dramatically decreased at age 70–120 days. The otolith increment width also showed a marked increase at the same ages, indicating the onset of metamorphosis. A negative correlation between age at metamorphosis and otolith growth rate indicates that faster growing leptocephali arrive at the estuary earlier than slower growing ones. A close relationship was also found between age at recruitment and age at metamorphosis, suggesting that individuals that metamorphosed earlier were recruited to the estuary at a younger age. This larval migration pattern appears to be similar among anguilliform fishes.Communicated by S.A. Poulet, Roscoff  相似文献

Past reproductive success affects future habitat selection   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Correlational studies have shown that an individual's past reproductive success often increases its breeding site fidelity (i.e., the tendency to return to a previously occupied location), suggesting that individuals use their reproductive experience to assess habitat quality. However, the causality of the relationship between reproductive success and site fidelity is still uncertain. In a field experiment, the effect of mating success on site fidelity was isolated from potential confounding variables in a territorial dragonfly, the eastern amberwing (Perithemis tenera). The experiment controlled for site quality, intrinsic characteristics of males, previous territorial experience at the site, arrival order, and territorial evictions. Males that were prevented from mating were much more likely to change sites the following day than control males that were allowed to mate. This result was not affected by age, the amount of time a male spent on the site, or mortality. These results imply that individuals use their own reproductive success to assess the quality of the habitat. The benefit to an individual of using its reproductive success to determine habitat quality is discussed relative to other sources of information. Growth rate and hatch date distributions were estimated for juvenile walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma (Pallas, 1814) collected in autumn 1987 from the western Gulf of Alaska. Mean juvenile growth rates varied geographically by as much as 45%. A trend for slower growth around Unimak Pass and the Shumagin Islands and faster growth upstream in the Alaska Coastal Current towards Kodiak Island was noted; the fastest growth did not occur in the main habitat region. Juvenile hatch date distributions were compared to identify regional differences that might reflect stock structure. Juvenile hatch dates were compared with hatch dates of the same cohort sampled as larvae to test for selective mortality. Regional differences in hatch dates, along with other information, indicated several minor spawning populations located around Kodiak Island and near Unimak Pass. For the main aggregation of pollock in the Shumagin Island region, hatch date distributions were not significantly different among the early larval cohort sampled in late May, the late larvae sampled in mid-June to early July, and the juveniles sampled in autumn. Neither growth-rate nor size-dependent mortality of pollock between the larval and juvenile stages appears to be a dominant factor in determining survival patterns. An alternative test was attempted, by which lengths-at-age during larval life were back-calculated from juvenile otoliths and compared with lengths-at-age of the population sampled as larvae in May and June. Pollock surviving as juveniles in autumn were not larger as larvae than the general larval population. This result is an example of the observation that back-calculated lengths are almost always smaller than the lengths of fish sampled at age (Lee's phenomenon). Problems in determining survival patterns based on otolith back-calculations and comparison of hatch date distributions are discussed.  相似文献

Age-0 walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) caught in September in the Gulf of Alaska display habitat-associated differences in standard length (SL). Age-0 fish collected in the region around Sutwik Island and 375?km farther downstream near the Shumagin Islands most likely originate from the Shelikof Strait spawning aggregation. However, age-0 fish resulting from the same spawning aggregation differ in mean size up to 20?mm between areas by September. We examined the otoliths of the larval and age-0 stages of walleye pollock from these two areas in 2000 and 2001 to determine whether growth rate, hatch date, and/or temperature influenced fish size. Circulation models were used to determine whether transport of larvae from an upstream spawning group into the study areas could have occurred. Mean in situ temperature during sampling periods was not defined as a significant factor in altering growth rates. Overlapping hatch date distributions of the larval and age-0 fish in the Shumagin Island area confirmed that the fish were from the Shelikof Strait spawning group. Comparison of hatch date distributions in the upstream Sutwik Island area revealed larger/older larvae from an upstream spawning group mixed with larvae from the Shelikof Strait spawning group. Our results suggest that the offset of 20?mm SL between the groups of age-0 pollock was the result of a combination of enhanced survivorship of early-hatched larvae in the Sutwik area and the introduction and retention of the progeny of another spawning group originating upstream of Shelikof Strait.  相似文献
