The histology and ultrastructure of the epithelial cells of the outer and middle mantle folds of the bivalves Mytilus edulis (L), Cardium edule (L), Macoma balthica (L) and Nucula sulcata Bronn are described. The cells lining the inner face of the outer fold exhibit a prominent granular endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi complexes which are concerned with the elaboration of granules and vesicles eventually incorporated into the periostracum. A gradual reduction in the protein synthetic apparatus occurs towards the tip of the fold. Within the cells, it is proposed that the ovoid inclusion bodies are lysosomes and that they control the rate of secretion. The cells of the middle fold are cuboidal in appearance. Those of M. edulis and N. sulcata exhibit prominent granules, whereas those of C. edule and M. balthica possess vesicles. The cells of M. edulis differ from the others in possessing stout bundles of filaments, which occupy large areas of the cell and constitute a cell web. The cells of the epithelium in all cases do not appear to be implicated in periostracum formation.  相似文献

The ultrastructural details of changes that occur in the inner face of the outer fold of Mytilus edulis during periostracum repair are described. Initially, after the periostracum is slit, increased secretory activity occurs in the cells, apparently controlled by lysosomes. Proto-ostracal material deposited outside the cells seems to be due to Golgi secretory granules, which dissociate and then re-assemble outside the cells to form an organised layer. During the later stages of repair, autophagic vacuole formation increases in the cells, possibly because of increased demands for synthetic material. When substantial amounts of proto-ostracal material are secreted and the outer fold is sealed off from the external environment, the cells return to their normal condition. During the early stages of repair, amoebocytes appear to be implicated in the laying down of proto-ostracal material.  相似文献

The fine structure of the opercula of Spirobis borealis Daudin and S. pusilloides Bush, and the primary and secondary operculum of S. granulatus (L) have been examined by electron microscopy. In different regions, the epithelium of the operculum exhibits variations in thickness and fine structure which correspond to transitions from peduncular to opercular wall to opercular plate epithelia. Externally, the peduncle and walls of the operculum are covered by a cuticle which is composed of several layers of fibrils/fibres embedded in an amorphous matrix. It is regularly traversed by microvilli from underlying cells. At the operculum rim, the cuticle changes so that its appearance is thick and solid. It continues across the roof of the operculum as a thin layer overlying a calcareous plate. The secondary operculum of S. granulatus differs from those of the other species in that an internal calcareous plate and solid cuticle line the roof of the operculum. It differs further in possessing an opercular pore. The possibilities are discussed of the cuticle fibrils/fibres of the peduncle and the opercular wall being collagenous in nature, and later being transformed to a solid tanned structure overlying a calcareous plate. The modes of secretion of the cuticle and calcareous plate by underlying cells are also discussed.  相似文献

Polyphenols were located in all the layers of the periostracum and in inclusion bodies in the inner face of the outer-fold cells of Mytilus edulis L. Results, after 4 days periostracum repair, show that the proto-ostracal material is deposited in distinct layers. Inclusion bodies in the cells of the inner face of the outer fold appear to give rise to the polyphenols in the proto-ostracal material.  相似文献

Bivalves (Cerastoderma edule and Macoma balthica) which had previously been exposed to Aroclors® 1242, 1254 and 1260 were able to reduce their tissue burdens of chlorobiphenyls with 2 to 5 chlorine atoms in short-term static assay systems. Elimination rates decreased with increasing chlorination and removal of isomers with more than 5 chlorine atoms was not recorded. Position, in addition to the number, of chlorine atoms influenced the persistence of chlorobiphenyls. Isomers with most ortho-substituted chlorine atoms were least persistent. Experiments with single isomers indicated variation in the elimination of low chlorinated isomers between bivalve species. These biological and chemical influences on tissue residues, together with environmental parameters such as temperature and suspended solids, are considered in relation to the use of bivalves as bio-indicators of marine pollution.  相似文献

To understand the relative importance of biological versus physicochemical control over biomineralization, we have tested if the chemical composition of the medium (i.e., the Mg/Ca ratio) can change the mineralogy of mollusk shells. The shells of mollusks are made of calcite and/or aragonite, which are by far the most common CaCO3 polymorphs. Several species of bivalves with predominantly calcitic shells have been cultivated in artificial seawater with a Mg/Ca molar ratio within the range of 8.3–9.2, well above the present value for seawater (5.2). Four out of six species used (the scallop Chlamys varia, the oyster Ostrea edulis, the saddle oyster Anomia ephippium and the mussel Mytilus edulis) survived long enough to secrete significant amounts of calcium carbonate. The deposits (sometimes extensive) formed on the interior shell surfaces were predominantly aragonitic. Three individuals of C. varia also increased their length by adding new shell at the margin. Contrary to the internal shell deposits, these margins were high-Mg calcite. This implies that the marginal mantle is able to exert a more strict control on the secreted mineral phase than the mantle facing the internal shell surface. This is the first report on an in vivo experimentally forced switch in bivalve shell mineralogy, from calcite to aragonite due to a change in water chemistry.  相似文献

Contemporary research on bivalve suspension-feeding has revealed a diversity of particle processing mechanisms depending on the anatomy and functioning of the pallial organs involved. On the biochemical level, however, some evidence of homogeneity has emerged concerning the types of mucopolysaccharide associated with particle processing. The present study uses both previous data and original research combining video endoscopy and mucocyte mapping to further explore the relationships between pallial organ topography, functional correlates, direction of current flow, and mucocyte secretion type. Five species representing five different families and all four major gill types are represented: Mytilus edulis, Placopecten magellanicus, Crassostrea virginica, Mya arenaria, and Spisula solidissima. Viscous acid or acid-dominant mucopolysaccharides are used when particle transport occurs on an exposed surface, or on a structure leading directly to such a surface, counter to the prevailing current flow. Associated functions are indiscriminate transport in gill ventral particle grooves and rejection of pseudofeces. Lower-viscosity mixed mucopolysaccharides are used when particle transport is on an enclosed or semi-enclosed surface, leading to other such surfaces, and with the current flow. Associated functions are transport of particles destined for ingestion, and ingestion itself. Low-viscosity neutral mucopolysaccharides are found in regions where reduction of mucus viscosity is important, such as the areas of the labial palps responsible for fluidization of the high-viscosity mucus-particle cord of the gill ventral particle groove prior to particle extraction. There thus appears to be a specialization of mucus type corresponding to functional specialization of the various pallial organs in suspension-feeding marine bivalves. Macrobenthic sampling of a transect of six stations on the North coast of Central Java in October 1985 revealed three distinct communities which can be regarded as paraliels of those from north temperate waters: (i) An Amphioplus (Lymanella) laevis/Lovenia sp. community parallel with the Amphiura chiajei/Brissopsis lyrifera community. (ii) A Tellinides timorensis community parallel with Tellina spp. communities. (iii) A Laciolina philippinarum community parallel with Macoma spp. communities. A strict comparison of the structure of the first two of these communities with their counterparts in England shows that within-habitat diversity is similar in both regions. Diversity at two shallower subtidal stations is higher than at two deeper stations: this is attributed to the effects of natural, low-level, physical disturbance which maintains the communities in a sub-climax stage. Total abundance and biomass of the macrobenthic fauna was lower at the Javanese stations than in their temperate counterparts.  相似文献

Models for the formation of biogenic iodine in marine aerosols have been proposed in the literature. Here, we analyse the possible species and reactions that could occur in the proposed models. We calculate the enthalpies of formation for the species and the enthalpies of corresponding reactions. Unchlorinated domestic sewage was found to be a relatively weak inhibitor of external fertilization in 3 marine invertebrates. Chlorinated sewage was a potent spermicide, active in inhibiting fertilization in concentrations of available chlorine as low as 0.05 ppm. Sodium hypochlorite in seawater duplicated the effect, and excess sodium thiosulfate terminated it. The possibility of chlorine disinfection affecting reproductive success in the vicinity of outfalls is discussed.  相似文献

Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins can be accumulated by bivalves through the feeding process; therefore, knowledge on feeding and the assimilation of PSP-toxin-containing algae is critical to understand the kinetics of PSP toxins in these bivalves. In the South China Sea, it has been documented that the scallop Chlamys nobilis has a much higher PSP toxin burden than the clam Ruditapes philippinarum. Experiments were therefore carried out to assess whether the difference in toxin burden between these two species of bivalves was due to differences in feeding and absorption. In a mixed diet of Alexandrium tamarense (a PSP-toxin-producing dinoflagellate) and Thalassiosira pseudonana (a non-toxic diatom), the maximum clearance and filtration rates were about two times higher in the scallop C. nobilis than in the clam R. philippinarum. Furthermore, the clams produced pseudofeces at a lower cell density than the scallops. However, we found that the clams were unable to selectively exclude the toxic dinoflagellates by pseudofeces production. The scallop C. nobilis also possessed a greater ability to assimilate A. tamarense with a comparable carbon absorption efficiency to the diatom T. pseudonana. In contrast, the carbon absorption in the clam R. philippinarum was lower when feeding on A. tamarense than on the diatom. In general, the absorption efficiency decreased with increasing concentration of A. tamarense. Thus, it is likely that the higher PSP toxin levels in the scallops compared with clams can be partly explained by differences in their feeding and absorption behavior. Other processes, especially the biotransformation and biokinetics of PSP toxins, may also play a significant role in defining the inter-species differences in PSP body burden in marine bivalves.  相似文献

Using a pressurized temperature gradient, which rapidly equilibrates bacteria to a wide range of temperature and pressures, temperature ranges for growth and survival of Vibrio harveyi (strain B 392) were found to narrow with increasing pressures. Both temperature and pressure ranges were greater in an enriched seawater medium than in unenriched seawater. Using a kinetics apparatus, V. harveyi was also exposed to gradual changes in temperature and pressure, simulating a particle sinking at approximately 200 m d-1 from surface waters (17 °C; 1 bar pressure) to 3 400 m (4°C; 340 bars pressure). With gradual temperature changes, cells were able to grow and survive at lower temperatures than they had in rapid equilibration experiments. Gradual pressurization, however, did not increase pressure tolerance. Under all experimental conditions, the combined effects of low temperatures and high pressures were lethal for V. harveyi. It is hypothesized that temperature and pressure stratify the ocean into regions of growth, survival, and death for V. harveyi, and perhaps other bacteria.  相似文献

The influence of temperature upon sulphide formation was investigated with sediment sulphureta incubated at constant temperatures in the laboratory. The concentrations of sulphate, sulphide and pyrite were periodically measured and it was found that, in addition to a decrease in the rate of sulphide formation with temperature, there was a changes in the origin of the sulphide. Thus, at 5° and 10°C, the majority of sulphide originated from organic sulphur, while sulphate contributed the greater proportion of the sulphide at 20° and 30°C. Such changes presumably reflect those in the natural enviroment during winter and summer.  相似文献

Summary Scarlet-tufted malachite sunbirds (Nectarinia johnstoni) are endemic to the alpine zones of East African mountains. On Mount Kenya they feed almost exclusively on the nectar of Lobelia telekii flowers. Males are resident on their territories all year and defend L. telekii inflorescences from conspecifics. Males are bright iridescent green, with scarlet pectoral tufts which are displayed prominently during aggressive interactions with other males. We investigated the role of pectoral tufts in territory defence using natural variation and experimental manipulation. Males with naturally large pectoral tufts defended more L. telekii inflorescences than males with smaller tufts, and achieved a higher reproductive success. Males were subjected to one of three experimental treatments - having their pectoral tufts enlarged, reduced or manipulated but kept at the same size. Males with reduced tufts spend more time in aggressive interactions than the control males, the interactions lasted longer and they lost a number of inflorescences to neighbours. Males with enlarged pectoral tufts increased the number of inflorescences defended. These results indicate that the pectoral tufts of male scarlet-tufted malachite sunbirds are used as a means of male-male assessment during aggressive interactions. Offprint requests to: M.R. The quantitative significance of the nitrogenous compound glycine betaine (GBT) and its sulfur analog dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) to intracellular pools in marine phytoplankton is not well known. In a series of experiments conducted in August 1993, we measured these compounds, as well as total organic sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen, over the growth cycle in six isolates of marine phytoplankton, Amphidinium carterae Hulburt, Chrysochromulina sp. Lackey, Emiliania huxleyi Hay et Mohler, Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller, Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve, and Tetraselmis sp. At the same time, we measured cellular concentrations of protein, amino acids, chlorophyll, and inorganic nutrients. All six species produced DMSP, while three produced GBT at lesser levels. In the Chrysochromulina sp. isolate, levels of GBT were greater than DMSP during the exponential phase of growth, but declined sharply as the culture approached stationary phase. This change appeared to coincide with the onset of nitrogen limitation. Other nitrogenous osmolytes were produced in five of the six species but in much smaller quantities. DMSP contributed significantly to cellular sulfur throughout the growth cycle although, in some algae, the proportion of dissolved DMSP increased substantially during stationary growth. When present, GBT formed a sizeable fraction of the cellular nitrogen only during exponential growth. A significant percentage (ca. 50%) of the organic nitrogen could not be accounted for even when cellular pools of protein, amino acids, inorganic nitrogen, and nitrogenous osmolytes were combined. Based on these experiments, there does not appear to be a reciprocal relationship between DMSP and GBT production, although GBT production does appear to be correlated with nitrogen availability. Hypoxia/anoxia in coastal waters is a world wide problem which often results in mass mortality and defaunation of benthos. In this study, field experiments were carried out to examine recolonization and succession of macrobenthic infauna in defaunated sediments, and the time required for recovery from complete defaunation to a stable community. Trays (33 cm length × 25.5 cm width × 11 cm depth) of defaunated sediment were exposed at the subtidal of a pristine site in subtropical Hong Kong. Temporal changes of macrobenthic communities in defaunated sediment were analyzed by univariate and multivariate statistics, and compared with those in undisturbed natural sediment at the same site. Initial colonization of macrobenthos occurred rapidly. A total of 42 species was found, with an average of 258 animals per tray and 24 species per tray recorded in the first month. Abundance showed a small peak (496 animals per tray) after 3 months, reached a sharp peak (1154 animals per tray) after 6 months, and declined thereafter. Species number increased gradually, reached a maximum (68 species per tray) after 9 months, and then decreased. Recolonization was predominantly contributed by larval settlement rather than adult migration. Temporal changes in abundance, species number and diversity of the macrobenthic community in defaunated sediment resemble the spatial changes along a decreasing pollution gradient previously defined by other authors. Results of this experiment suggest that newly available sediment may allow more species to colonize (or coexist) than sediment pre-occupied by an established community. This is probably due to less interspecific competition in the former habitat. No significant difference in abundance or species richness was observed between defaunated and natural sediments after 15 months, suggesting that a stable community had been achieved, although minor variations in species composition were still discernible between defaunated and natural sediments. Although laboratory experimental studies have shown that copper is toxic to marine organisms at concentrations found in contaminated sediments, there is little unequivocal evidence of undesirable ecological effects in the field, other than at extreme concentrations. We describe a study in Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia, in which the concentrations of copper in marine sediments were experimentally enhanced. Changes in the abundance and taxonomic composition of the fauna of copper-treated sediments relative to those of two control treatments were monitored over a period of six months. Univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate (non-metric multidimensional scaling, MDS) analyses of the changes in the fauna showed that increased concentrations of copper (140 to 1200 g g-1 compared with background concentrations of 29 to 40 g g-1) had an impact on the fauna. The nature of the response varied among taxa. For example, in some taxa, numbers of individuals decreased through time relative to controls, whereas the abundance of another taxon remained fairly constant through time in the copper treatment while numbers of control individuals increased. Differences in the changes of the faunas through time among the control and copper treatments were not always consistent among replicate experimental units 5 m apart, nor were they consistent between replicate experimental sites 100 m apart. The magnitudes of the changes in the faunas caused by the copper treatment are considered in the context of the magnitude of previously measured natural temporal variation.  相似文献

Callus formation of seven species of the agarophyte marine algae Phyllophora nervosa, Gracilaria verrucosa, Furcellaria fastigiata, ceramium kondoi, Gelidium vagum, Laurencia paniculata, Rhodymenia pertusa was obtained from 1984 to 1986. A new sterile agent, chlorhexidin bigluconate, was used to get axenic explants from the algae thalli. The formation of callus from axenic explants depended on temperature of cultivation. In the case of F. fastigiata and G. vagum it occurred at 12° to 20°C, and with P. nervosa at 18° to 26°C. The exchange of sucrose with mannitol in the culture medium and the addition of some growth regulators stimulated the formation of callus. Mass formation of lumpy and warty extensions was observed in the explants from leaf blades of P. nervosa. The results might be useful for improving the aquaculture of agarophyte marine algae.  相似文献
