Minor and trace elements in the shell of Patella aspera (Röding 1798)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Specimens of the limpet Patella aspera were collected from a clean, coastal marine site and a contaminated estuary on the south coast of Portugal. The shells were analysed individually for their minor (Mg, Sr) and trace element (Fe, Mn, Zn) content. Mean concentrations of these elements in the shell of P. aspera were 4651, 1318, 35.8, 29.9 and 5.5 microg g(-1), respectively. The elemental concentrations exhibited both a marked intra- and inter-population variability. Despite the variability within individual populations, significant differences in the trace element composition were apparent between the shells taken from the two sites. Small shells (< 2 g) provided the best resolution between sites for both manganese and iron. Differences in zinc were best resolved for larger shells. The shell of P. aspera has an extraordinarily high magnesium concentration, which is insensitive to gross salinity differences, and a trace metal assemblage that can be interpreted in terms of environmental exposure. On these grounds, it is recommended that the shell of P. aspera is a tissue for potential use in environmental trace metal monitoring.  相似文献

This paper describes the partitioning of iron, manganese, zinc, copper, cadmium, cobalt, nickel and lead between the soft tissues and the shells of the gastropod mollusc Patella aspera. Specimens of the limpet P. aspera were collected from a clean coastal marine site (CMS) and from an estuarine contaminated site (ECS) on the south coast of Portugal. Fe and Zn concentrations were significantly lower on both populations and less variable in the shells than in the soft tissues. In contrast Mn concentrations were higher in the shells than in the soft tissues at ECS. The partitioning factor (PF), defined as the ratio between the mean metal concentrations in soft tissues and in the shells, was maximum for iron and minimum for manganese. Between the soft tissues and the shells, only manganese at ECS recorded a significant relationship between metal concentrations, suggesting that the mechanism that controls the accumulation of this essential metal in both tissues was different from the others. From the obtained data, in biomonitoring sewage contamination studies, shells of P. aspera can be considered as a good indicator for Mn while the soft tissues for Zn. As copper, cadmium, nickel and cobalt concentrations were much higher in the soft tissues than in the shells (< 0.1 microg g(-1)), this indicates that the shells were not a good indicator for these metals because they do not reflect the environmental bioavailability as do the soft tissues.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess whether the use of pig slurry and associated copper accumulation in calves grazing pastures fertilized with pig slurry from the Deza region in NW Spain has a significant influence on toxic metal and essential metal levels, and to investigate whether copper accumulation is correlated with the levels of these other metals. Correlations between copper, toxic metals (cadmium, lead) and essential metals (molybdenum, iron, zinc, selenium, manganese and cobalt) concentrations were evaluated in liver and kidney of 195 calves from the region of Deza. Metal concentrations were determined by ICP-OES and correlations between pairs of elements by Pearson correlation analysis. There was a strongly significant positive association between copper and lead in the liver. Considering the trace metals, copper in the liver showed significant positive correlations with cobalt in both liver and kidney, and with molybdenum in the liver. In addition, significant correlations were observed between copper and most essential metals in kidney. These associations are similar to those found in different animal species experimentally dosed with copper and other metals, as well as in cattle exposed to normal copper concentrations.  相似文献

The levels of the heavy elements cadmium, copper, cobalt, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc in the major streams and man-made lakes in and around Ibadan City were determined at roughly two monthly intervals between August 1977 and February 1979. They were found to be in the ppb and sub-ppb level except for iron and manganese which were in the ppm range. To assess the quality of these waters with respect to heavy metal contamination, a comparison is made between our results, world averages for both freshwater and seawater, and international water quality standards for drinking water. All elements, except iron manganese, were well within the safety limits. The low level of industrialization in Ibadan has kept its streams and lakes relatively free from heavy metal contamination.  相似文献

This paper reports on the pollution profile of Damodar river sediment as obtained from analysis of the river sediment at suitable selected sites in the Raniganj-Durgapur industrial belt, West Bengal, India. The parameters measured include (a) silica, mixed oxide, calcium, magnesium, total water-soluble exchangeable cation and anion, chemical oxygen demand, and (b) some toxic and other elements, such as sodium, potassium, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, manganese, lead, zinc, cobalt, copper, iron nickel, phosphorus, sulphur, and vanadium. The parameters listed under (a) led to the characterization of the sediment, and those under (b) gave an index of metal pollution of the sediment. The elements were estimated by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry.  相似文献

The metal levels of arsenic, chromium, copper, lead, magnesium, manganese, selenium, vanadium, and zinc concentrations were determined in various body organs, viz., hepatopancreas, gills, gonad, gastric stomach, and muscle of the blue crab, Portunus pelagicus (Crustacea: Decapoda) to assess the bioaccumulation of metals associated with petroleum input a decade after the 1991 Gulf War oil spillage. Sample solutions prepared were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometry. High concentrations of Zn and Cu in the muscle and hepatopancreas tissues were a strong indicative of high exposure of P. pelagicus to these metals. However, muscle tissue had been found to accumulate the highest values for all metal speciations analyzed. Copper, zinc, and chromium in samples collected from Station II covering the Kuwait City area were often in excess of those present in Station I and III. Arsenic, lead, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and vanadium were greater in individuals obtained from Station I. A significant correlation was found to exist between Se and V in crab muscle with a surge in Se metal concentration, which was found to be inversely proportional to that of V metal concentration irrespective of the sex of the crab. The difference in patterns of metal occurrence and the significant increase in the Cu and Zn concentrations in various organs of the crab were largely associated with the 1991 Gulf War oil spill. Such results could be used as a baseline for the monitoring of the level of metals in marine organisms of future studies.  相似文献

Coal ash obtained by coal combustion in the "Nikola Tesla A" power plant in Obrenovac, near Belgrade, Yugoslavia, is mixed with water of the Sava river and transported to the dump. In order to assess pollution caused by leaching of some minor and major elements during ash transport through the pipeline, two sets of samples (six samples each) were subjected to a modified sequential extraction. The first set consisted of coal ash samples taken immediately after combustion, while the second set was obtained by extraction with river water, imitating the processes that occur in the pipeline. Samples were extracted consecutively with distilled water and a 1 M solution of KCl, pH 7, and the differences in extractability were compared in order to predict potential pollution. Considering concentrations of seven trace elements as well as five major elements in extracts from a total of 12 samples, it can be concluded that lead and cadmium do not present an environmental threat during and immediately after ash transport to the dump. Portions of zinc, nickel and chromium are released during the ash transport, and arsenic and manganese are released continuously. Copper and iron do not present an environmental threat due to element leaching during and immediately after the coal ash suspension and transport. On the contrary, these elements, as well as chromium, become concentrated during coal ash transport. Adsorbed portions of calcium, magnesium and potassium are also leached during coal ash transport.  相似文献

Six fish species were collected: summer trout (Salmo alar), rock fish (Roccus lineatus), pink snapper (Lutianus ava), croaker (Stellifer lancelatus), sheepshead (Diplodus holbrooki) and spanish mackeral (Scomberomorus maculatus). Seven trace elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results indicate that the trace elements iron, copper, zinc, mercury, chromium, and nickel show higher levels in the livers than in the flesh of all the six fish species. Surprisingly, magnesium concentration levels were consistently higher in flesh than in the livers of all six fish species.  相似文献

Variations in nutrient and metal concentrations of fluvial sediment may be due to varying combinations of natural and man-made factors: basin geology, surface erosion, riverbank erosion, industrial or other cultural contamination, the presence of minerals rich in trace elements (e.g. chromite), sediment ion-exchange capacity, sediment organic content, and the presence of metallic oxides. The data reported here were obtained in a study in New York State of sediment transport from the Genesee River watershed to Lake Ontario (6,500 km2; 2,400 sq.mi.). One hundred bottom sediment samples collected over a period of a year were chemically analyzed for aluminium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, zinc, total carbon, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and phosphorus. The metal concentrations (arithmetic means ±S.D., in μg/g) were: Al, 6,660±2,620; Cr, 14±9; Cu, 18±7; Fe, 15,060±7,312; Mn, 424±212; Ni, 23±13; Pb, 40±67; and Zn, 69±37. For the major nutrients the results (mean ±1 S.D. in %) were: total carbon, 2.06 ± 1.68; total organic carbon, 1.37 ± 1.28; total nitrogen, 0.105 ± 0.098; and phosphorus, 0.0560 ± 0.014.  相似文献

After the Aznalcóllar mining spill (25th April 1998), considerable social concern arose amongst the inhabitants of the SW Iberian Peninsula concerning the consumption of local seafood. Squilla mantis was collected in four regions of the Gulf of Cádiz with a dual objective: to analyze the heavy metal levels for human consumption and as part of biomonitoring program. Heavy metal concentrations (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb) were analyzed in soft tissues and cuticle. The highest values were found in the soft tissues for zinc, copper and cadmium and in the cuticle for iron, manganese and lead. The mean copper concentration in the soft tissue, corresponding to the edible part, was 27.1 microg x g(-1) wet weight. Approximately 80% of stations showed values higher than 20 microg x g(-1) wet weight of copper, the Spanish legal limit for the concentration of this metal in the crustacean for human consumption. For Zn and Cu no significant differences were found between regions, probably related with the capacity for regulation of S. mantis. The highest values found for copper in the Gulf of Cádiz compared to other areas is likely to be related with contamination from terrestrial mining activities (copper and pyrites) in the region, dating back to the times of Tartessians and Romans, rather than the effects of mining spill which was shown not to create any significant increases in heavy metal concentrations of organisms of the Guadalquivir River or the adjacent coastal area.  相似文献

The metal contents of pollen loads gathered by honeybees have been determined in areas with known concentrations of soil-borne heavy metals. The manganese, zinc, copper, and lead contents of the pollen loads reflected those of the environment, indicating that honeybee colonies might be used to sample areas.  相似文献

Barks of six species of trees were sampled at thirty-nine different locations in Ibadan, Nigeria and were analysed for the trace metals lead, cadmium, cobalt, copper, zinc, manganese, and iron. Lead levels in barks from areas with relatively high traffic density were generally higher than lead levels in barks from areas with low traffic density. The lead level recorded in the high traffic density areas, 40–140 μg/g, is low compared to values reported for barks of trees along busy roads in developed countries. For the other metals, no correlation with traffic density was observed.  相似文献

Four fish species were collected: brown trout, grouper, spotted tail bass, and black crappie. Fish samples were thawed and dissected. The pieces of edible muscle and liver tissues were digested in a reagent-grade nitric acid, in a constant temperature shaking-water bath at 58°C. Thirteen inorganic elements were determined by flame atomic absorption. The significant findings of this report are that inorganic elements, mercury, iron, copper, zinc, chromium, and nickel with the exception of magnesium show elevated levels in the livers than in the muscles of all the four fish species. It seems magnesium concentration levels were consistantly higher in the muscles than in the livers of all four fish species. It is found that calculations of muscle-liver ratios indicate that ratios in the range of 0.5 are preliminary indicative of environmental static conditions, whereas ratios in the range of more than one are indicative of environmental improvement.  相似文献

Surface soil and grass samples were collected from ten locations perpendicular to a major road in Alice and were analyzed for zinc and copper. The results revealed an association between zinc concentration and distance from road traffic. An association was also revealed between soil zinc and grass zinc which suggests same source for the metal in samples. The results for copper did not show any correlation between sample concentration and distance from road traffic. Neither did it show any correlation between soil zinc and soil copper or between grass zinc and grass copper which suggests different sources for the elements.  相似文献

Sediment samples were collected during the research vessel Umitaka-Maru cruises in the Gulf region from 15–16 December 1993 and 15–27 December 1994, from 19 and 24 locations, respectively. These samples were subjected to trace metal analysis to determine the 1991 Gulf War oil spill environmental impact in the area. The samples investigated are texturally classified into two main sediment classes: sand and mud. The total concentrations of lead, nickel, and vanadium found in the sediments from individual stations were investigated. The differences in trace metal concentrations reflect the variation in the overall composition of their host sediments. To better appraise the trace element composition of their host sediments and to determine the factors governing the trace metal distribution, the data were sub-divided into five groups among 1993 collections and seven groups during 1994. The concentration ranges of all three metals, lead (0.2–4.85), nickel (4.90–86.00), and vanadium (2.00–38.00) varied in different stations among the groups. The partitioning of trace elements between the detrial and non-detrital fractions of the sediments shows that: 1) The high concentrations of elements in mud is coupled with the increase in the detrital fraction; 2) In muddy sand sediments, nickel is bonded to the structural lattice of detrital minerals, whereas vanadium and lead held in the environmentally mobile fraction; and, 3) In sandy mud sediments, Ni is found in the detrital fraction, whereas V to slightly less extent and Pb show their non-detrital nature. The data were compared with unpolluted sediments throughout the ROPME Sea and worldwide, so the effect of anthropogenic enrichment upon the absolute concentration of the elements is minimal.  相似文献

Electric conductivity, pH, COD(Mn), nutrient concentration, chloride and sulfate concentrations, total dissolved sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, cadmium, copper, arsenic, nickel, zinc, chromium and lead were evaluated to clarify concerns about the quality and safety of water used for drinking purposes in Qinghai Province, China. For this purpose, 12 water samples were collected from different villages, Qinghai (Koko Nor) Lake and medicinal springs close to the Town of Pingang during a study visit to China in 2003. The results showed that National Chinese and WHO drinking water standards were exceeded for nutrient concentration (3.2 mg l(-1) of TOT-N and 0.2 mg l(-1) of TOT-P) from Qinghai Lake. The presence of elevated electric conductivity (550 mS m(-1)) in mineral water resort samples should be a matter of a public concern. Also, samples from medicinal springs showed high concentrations of Fe (up to 1.9 mg l(-1)), As (up to 0.1 mg l(-1)) and Ni (0.05 mg l(-1)), which may be detrimental for human health if the water is consumed on a daily basis. The concentrations of Cu, Cd, Cr and Pb did not exceed the National Chinese and WHO drinking water standards, and therefore, water from the sampling area does not pose any significant threat to the consumers' health regarding these metals.  相似文献

Trace metal bioaccumulation: models, metabolic availability and toxicity   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Aquatic invertebrates take up and accumulate trace metals whether essential or non-essential, all of which have the potential to cause toxic effects. Subsequent tissue and body concentrations of accumulated trace metals show enormous variability across metals and invertebrate taxa. Accumulated metal concentrations are interpreted in terms of different trace metal accumulation patterns, dividing accumulated metals into two components - metabolically available metal and stored detoxified metal. Examples of different accumulation patterns are described from crustaceans but have a general applicability to all aquatic invertebrates. Toxicity does not depend on total accumulated metal concentration but is related to a threshold concentration of internal metabolically available metal. Toxicity ensues when the rate of metal uptake from all sources exceeds the combined rates of detoxification and excretion (if present) of the metal concerned. The biodynamic model of trace metal bioaccumulation allows the prediction and explanation of widely differing accumulated trace metal concentrations in organisms, combining geochemical analyses of environmental metal concentrations with the measurement of key physiological parameters for a species from the site under consideration. The combination of the biodynamic model as a unified explanation of metal bioaccumulation with an understanding of the relationship between accumulation and toxicity sets the stage for a realistic understanding of the significance of trace metal concentrations in aquatic invertebrates.  相似文献

The concentrations of chromium, iron, copper, nickel, lead, vanadium, and zinc in fish were determined to assess the impact of petroleum-refining activities and the 1991 Gulf War. Twenty-eight species of fish from the Kuwait coast were collected 50 m apart. Sample solutions prepared were analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrophotometry technique. Results show that fish samples contain 6.2 to 6.8 μg/g Cr, 4.2 to 96.2 μg/g Cu, 18.8 to 126.4 μg/g Fe, 0.5 to 20.4 μg/g Ni, 0.2 to 14.6 μg/g Pb, 0.02 to 15.6 μg/g V, and 7.6 to 81.3 μg/g Zn. Copper, nickel, and zinc in Station I, covering the Kuwait City area, were often greatly in excess of those present in Station II, covering the Al-Ahmadi area, while chromium, iron, lead, and vanadium were greater in Station II. Significant correlations were observed between some trace metals in fishes, indicating their common association.  相似文献

The concentrations of cadmium, copper, mercury, and zinc were determined in muscle (body, claw, and leg), hepatopancreas, and gill tissues of Pseudocarcinus gigas, an exceptionally large, long-lived, and deep-dwelling crab species. The accumulation patterns observed are discussed in terms of both intra- and interspecies variations, with particular attention to the possible consequences of the extreme size and depth range of P. gigas. Metal concentrations did not depend significantly on sex of the crab. Significant differences between tissues were detected for all metals, and the distribution of metal between the tissues was different for each metal. Significant correlations were found between metal concentrations in the various tissues and crab size, and these are discussed and rationalised. The concentrations of mercury and zinc in muscle tissue increased with crab size and were high compared to other crab species. The concentrations of cadmium and copper present in edible tissues were not especially high compared to other crab species, but the concentration of cadmium in the hepatopancreas is of dietary concern.  相似文献

Phytoaccumulation of heavy metals by aquatic plants   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
Three aquatic plants were examined for their ability to remove heavy metals from contaminated water: parrot feather (Myriophylhum aquaticum), creeping primrose (Ludwigina palustris), and water mint (Mentha aquatic). The plants were obtained from a Solar Aquatic System treating municipal wastewater. All the three plants were able to remove Fe, Zn, Cu, and Hg from the contaminated water. The average removal efficiency for the three plant species was 99.8%, 76.7%, 41.62%, and 33.9% of Hg, Fe, Cu, and Zn, respectively. The removal rates of zinc and copper were constant (0.48 mg/l/day for Zn and 0.11 mg/l/day for Cu), whereas those of iron and mercury were dependent on the concentration of these elements in the contaminated water and ranged from 7.00 to 0.41 mg/l/day for Fe and 0.0787 to 0.0002 mg/l/day for Hg. Parrot feather showed greater tolerance to toxicity followed by water mint and creeping primrose. The growth of creeping primrose was significantly affected by heavy metal toxicity. The selectivity of heavy metals for the three plant species was the same (Hg>Fe>Cu>Zn). The mass balance preformed on the system showed that about 60.45-82.61% of the zinc and 38.96-60.75% of the copper were removed by precipitation as zinc phosphate and copper phosphate, respectively.  相似文献
