The home range system of the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae was investigated along 11 km coastline at Grande Comore, Western Indian Ocean, between 1987 and 1991. 67 individuals were identified on individual white dot patterns. The home range consisted of daytime caves where fish aggregated in groups of up to 14 individuals while at night individuals moved singly downwards to a depth of 250 to 300 m in search of food. Site fidelity of at least 5 yr was found. The coelacanths used several caves within their home ranges. Cave size, cave occupation rate, average and maximum group size and cave preferences were studied. Tracking experiments with ultrasonic transmitters revealed horizontal home ranges of at least 8 km width. Population estimates of 200 to 230 individuals at Grande Comore confirm earlier counts. Large home ranges and highly mobility in a topographically narrow habitat apparently favoured inbreeding of the small local island population.  相似文献

One concept of evolutionary ecology holds that a living fossil is the result of past evolutionary events, and is adapted to recent selective forces only if they are similar to the selective forces in the past. We describe the present environment of the living coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae Smith, 1939 at Grande Comore, western Indian Ocean and report depth-dependent cave distribution, temperature, salinity and oxygen values which are compared to the fish's distribution and its physiological demands. We studied the activity pattern, feeding behaviour, prey abundance and hunting success to evaluate possible links between environmental conditions, feeding ecology and evolutionary success of this ancient fish. Transmitter tracking experiments indicate nocturnal activity of the piscivorous predator which hunts between approximately 200 m below the surface to 500 m depth. Fish and prey density were measured between 200 and 400 m, both increase with depth. Feeding tracks and feeding strikes of the coelacanth at various depths were simulated with the help of video and laser techniques. Along a 9447 m video transect a total of 31 potential feeding strikes occurred. Assuming 100% hunting success, medium-sized individuals would obtain 122 g and large females 299 g of prey. Estimates of metabolic rates revealed for females 3.7 ml O2 kg−1 h−1 and for males 4.5 ml O2 kg−1 h−1. Today coelacanths are considered to be a specialist deep-water form and to inhabit, with their ancient morphology, a contemporary environment where they compete with advanced, modern fish. Acoustic telemetry was used to examine patterns of activity and space utilisation of coelacanths, nocturnal predators which spend the day in submarine caves. Nine coelacanths (Latimeria chalumnae) were tracked, each for a period of 1 to 16 nights at Grande Comore, West Indian Ocean. Activities lasted on average 9 h, usually starting shortly after sunset and ending before sunrise. Vertically, coelacanths moved up and down at and below cave level by following the bottom contour, mainly between 180 and 400 m depth. The deepest record was 698 m, the shallowest 133 m. Most time was spent between 200 and 300 m depth. Large individuals performed deep excursions to depths below 400 m, usually once per night. The fish spent most time in water temperatures of 15 to 19 °C; they rarely ventured into waters warmer than 22 °C measured at depths shallower than 160 m depth. Horizontally, coelacanths stayed in narrow areas ranging from <1 to 10 km of coastline. Coelacanths are extremely slow drift-hunters with an estimated average swimming speed of 3.2 m min−1, often travelling not more than 3 km per night. They probably take advantage of local upwelling and downwelling and slow currents occurring parallel to the steep slopes. This study shows that coelacanths are inhabitants of the subphotic zone, where they are active mainly below the depth of their daytime refuges. Risk-Based Viable Population Monitoring   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Abstract:  We describe risk-based viable population monitoring, in which the monitoring indicator is a yearly prediction of the probability that, within a given timeframe, the population abundance will decline below a prespecified level. Common abundance-based monitoring strategies usually have low power to detect declines in threatened and endangered species and are largely reactive to declines. Comparisons of the population's estimated risk of decline over time will help determine status in a more defensible manner than current monitoring methods. Monitoring risk is a more proactive approach; critical changes in the population's status are more likely to be demonstrated before a devastating decline than with abundance-based monitoring methods. In this framework, recovery is defined not as a single evaluation of long-term viability but as maintaining low risk of decline for the next several generations. Effects of errors in risk prediction techniques are mitigated through shorter prediction intervals, setting threshold abundances near current abundance, and explicitly incorporating uncertainty in risk estimates. Viable population monitoring also intrinsically adjusts monitoring effort relative to the population's true status and exhibits considerable robustness to model misspecification. We present simulations showing that risk predictions made with a simple exponential growth model can be effective monitoring indicators for population dynamics ranging from random walk to density dependence with stable, decreasing, or increasing equilibrium. In analyses of time-series data for five species, risk-based monitoring warned of future declines and demonstrated secure status more effectively than statistical tests for trend.  相似文献

Abstract: Determining population viability of rare insects depends on precise, unbiased estimates of population size and other demographic parameters. We used data on the endangered St. Francis' satyr butterfly (Neonympha mitchellii francisci) to evaluate 2 approaches (mark–recapture and transect counts) for population analysis of rare butterflies. Mark–recapture analysis provided by far the greatest amount of demographic information, including estimates (and standard errors) of population size, detection, survival, and recruitment probabilities. Mark–recapture analysis can also be used to estimate dispersal and temporal variation in rates, although we did not do this here. Models of seasonal flight phenologies derived from transect counts (Insect Count Analyzer) provided an index of population size and estimates of survival and statistical uncertainty. Pollard–Yates population indices derived from transect counts did not provide estimates of demographic parameters. This index may be highly biased if detection and survival probabilities vary spatially and temporally. In terms of statistical performance, mark–recapture and Pollard–Yates indices were least variable. Mark–recapture estimates were less likely to fail than Insect Count Analyzer, but mark–recapture estimates became less precise as sampling intensity decreased. In general, count‐based approaches are less costly and less likely to cause harm to rare insects than mark–recapture. The optimal monitoring approach must reconcile these trade‐offs. Thus, mark–recapture should be favored when demographic estimates are needed, when financial resources enable frequent sampling, and when marking does not harm the insect populations. The optimal sampling strategy may use 2 sampling methods together in 1 overall sampling plan: limited mark–recapture sampling to estimate survival and detection probabilities and frequent but less expensive transect counts.  相似文献

Deliberate reintroductions of locally exterminated animal species to areas within their former ranges is an increasingly important conservation tool. Most reintroductions are fairly recent and still in an initial phase of population development. There are few long-term studies of reintroduced populations. The aim of this study was to see if the population development of the reintroduced European beaver ( Castor fiber ) population in Sweden exhibits the same pattern of population development as other introductions, in accordance with general theories, and to discuss possible management consequences. Since the European beaver was reintroduced to Sweden 70 years ago, the population has developed in a way predicted by the Riney-Caughley model for introduced ungulates, exhibiting an irruption and a subsequent decline. In two study areas, the rate of population increase (r) turned negative after 34 and 25 years and at densities of 0.25 and 0.20 colonies/km2, respectively. The data suggest that management policy for an irruptive species should allow hunting during the rapid-increase phase, thus maintaining food resources and avoiding uncontrolled population decline.  相似文献

2004-2010年间,前后累计270多天,新疆雪豹研究小组在新疆北塔山、阿尔泰山、昆仑山、天山东部和托木尔峰地区20多个地点(山谷),对雪豹(Uncia uncia)的痕迹进行了全面调查,共计完成150多条样线,总长度接近190 km,痕迹数平均为1~3个·km-1.记录到的痕迹有粪团、嗅痕(气味标记)、足迹链、刨痕(刨坑)、爪痕、卧迹、毛发、尿迹、血迹、剩余食物(动物尸体)和吼声等.通过痕迹学的分析,初步掌握雪豹的领域范围、分布规律和相对密度.之后开展了红外相机拍摄、雪豹食物资源普查、市场毛皮调查、贸易通道调查、杀戮案件搜集、民间问卷调查、非政府组织(NGO)社区服务与牧业冲突调研等工作.同期布设红外相机36台,约2094个照相日,计50 256 h,回收胶卷71个,回收清晰雪豹照片32张,平均拍摄率或"捕获率"(capture rate)达1.53%.确定在托木尔峰250 km2范围内有5~8只雪豹活动,密度为2.0~3.2只·(100 km2)-1.在比较分析各种监测结果的基础上,讨论了新疆雪豹种群密度不同监测方法的优点与局限性.  相似文献

Abstract:  Animal and plant population monitoring programs are critical for identifying species at risk, evaluating the effects of management or harvest, and tracking invasive and pest species. Nevertheless, monitoring activities are highly decentralized, which makes it difficult for researchers or conservation planners to get a good general picture of what real-world monitoring programs actually entail. We used a Web-based survey to collect information on population monitoring programs. The survey focused on basic questions about each program, including motivations for monitoring, types of data being collected, spatiotemporal design of the program, and reasons for choosing that design. We received responses from 311 people involved in monitoring of various species and used these responses to summarize ongoing monitoring efforts. We also used responses to determine whether monitoring strategies have changed over time and whether they differed among monitoring agencies. Most commonly, monitoring entailed collection of count data at multiple sites with the primary goal of detecting trends. But we also found that goals and strategies for monitoring appeared to be diversifying, that area-occupied and presence–absence approaches appeared to be gaining in popularity, and that several other promising approaches (monitoring to reduce parameter uncertainty, risk-based monitoring, and directly linking monitoring data to management decisions) have yet to become widely established. We suggest that improved communication between researchers studying monitoring designs and those who are charged with putting these designs into practice could further improve monitoring programs and better match sampling designs to the objectives of monitoring programs.  相似文献

Eudendrium glomeratum Picard, in the Ligurian Sea, is one of the major components of hard-bottom sessile zoobenthos in the cold season. It settles mainly between 10 and 40 m depth, forming a seasonal facies. The presence of E. glomeratum has been evaluated by measuring in situ the height of the colonies present within a standard surface of 1 m2. Observations were carried out every other week for a whole year. The height of the colonies was correlated with their biomass (wet weight) and trophic functionality (number of polyps). The quantitative evaluation of the population shows that the situation is stable, with almost identical values at the extremes of the observed yearly time series. The species is present from October to April–May, and it is absent in the summer. The formation and disappearance of the E. glomeratum population are sudden. The colonies are sexually mature from their appearance in October to December–January. Different categories of colonies are recognizable; and are essentially referable to two groups: (1) colonies deriving from regeneration of colonies present in the previous year (45%); (2) colonies deriving from planula settlement (43%). A third group (12%) is of uncertain origin and may belong to either of the abovementioned categories. Mortality is 60% in the first group, and 82% in the second one. By dead colonies is meant those which do not reappear after a yearly cycle.  相似文献

The nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, inhabits shallow, tropical, and subtropical waters in the Atlantic and the eastern Pacific. Unlike many other species of sharks, nurse sharks are remarkably sedentary. We assayed the mitochondrial control region and eight microsatellite loci from individuals collected primarily in the western Atlantic to estimate the degree of population subdivision. Two individuals from the eastern Atlantic and one from the Pacific coast of Panama also were genotyped. Overall, the mtDNA haplotype (h = 48 ± 5%) and nucleotide (π = 0.08 ± 0.06%) diversities were low. The microsatellite data mirror the mitochondrial results with the average number of alleles ([`(N)]A \bar{N}_{A}  = 9) and observed heterozygosity ([`(H)]O \bar{H}_{O}  = 0.58) both low. The low levels of diversity seen in both the mtDNA and the microsatellite may be due to historical sea level fluctuations and concomitant loss of shallow water habitat. Eight of the 10 pair-wise western Atlantic F ST estimates for mtDNA indicated significant genetic subdivision. Pair-wise F ST values for the microsatellite loci indicated a similar pattern as the mtDNA. The western Atlantic population of nurse sharks is genetically subdivided with the strongest separation seen between the offshore islands and mainland Brazil, likely due to deep water acting as a barrier to dispersal. The eastern and western Atlantic populations were closely related. The eastern Pacific individual is quite different from Atlantic individuals and may be a cryptic, sister species.  相似文献

Abstract: Populations of Marianas fruit bats, Pteropus mariannus, were surveyed on each of the 15 Mariana Islands in 1983–1984. It is estimated that a minimum of 8,700–9,000 fruit bats occur in the archipelago, with about 8245% of these bats found on the nine northernmost and largely uninhabited islands. The islands of Anatahan, Pagan, and Agrihan had the largest populations, with minimum population estimates of 3,000, 2,500, and 1,000 bats, respectively. Smaller populations of about 400–1,000 fruit bats occurred on Asuncion, Guam, Rota, and Guam. The remaining is-ands in the archipelago were each estimated to have fewer than 125 bats. Population densities of fruit bats were highest on islands with little bunting but were generally much lower on human-inhabited islands where bunting was common. Quantity and quality of existing habitat were other important factors regulating the size of fruit bat populations in the Marianas. Increased enforcement of existing laws protecting bats and a public awareness program are important tasks needed to conserve and manage fmit bats in the Marianu Islands. The census techniques used in this study may be applicable to other fypes of colonial, mobile wildlife that inhabit islands.  相似文献

In soft-sediment marine and estuarine habitats, population dynamics of resident species are an important aspect of commnity structure and function, yet the population dynamics of many members of these communities remain poorly studied. The population dynamics and secondary production of the infaunal terebellid polychaete Loimia medusa (Savigny) were investigated in a shallow sand habitat of the York River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, between June 1989 and December 1990. Monthly sampling throughout 1 yr revealed that individuals were present year-round with maximum densities of 60 ind m-2 and a life span of 1 yr. Abundances were highest from August through September when two cohorts recruited to the population. Mean individual growth was highest in summer, and appeared to be a function of temperature rather than food limitation. Adults were reproductive from May through October and exhibited high fecundity; the number of oocytes segment-1 ranged from 201 to 15840 among worms. Larvae initially appeared approximately 1 mo after gametes were first observed in adult L. medusa, and these larvae appeared to spend less than 1 mo in the plankton. Abundances of larvae in the water column were significantly higher around new moon, suggesting lunar spawning periodicity. New recruits attained sexual maturity within 2 mo of settlement. Secondary production was 3.3 g ash-free dry wt m-2 yr-1 and the P/B (production/biomass) ratio was 3.0. Despite equilibrium species characteristics such as large size, high fecundity, and planktonic larvae, L. medusa exhibits some characteristics typically ascribed to opportunistic species, namely, the capacity for rapid growth and maturation, a short life span and a relatively high P/B ratio. This mixture of life history characteristics emphasizes that there is no simple dichotomy between opportunistic and equilibrium species. We caution that the dominance of large infaunal polychaetes in soft-bottom estuarine and marine environments may not be a useful indicator of undisturbed habitats.  相似文献

The ecology of the spider crab Inachus phalangium (Fabricius, 1775) (Decapoda: Maiidae) was studied in the field. I. phalangium inhabits the sublittoral on the sea anemone Anemonia sulcata Pennant. From July 1981 to April 1984 in the Mediterranean (Banyuls sur Mer, southern France) more than 3000 anemones were examined and ca 1800 I. phalangium were found on them. The population dynamics' generation cycles, reproductive activities and the dynamics of the sex ratio were investigated. The density of juveniles (crabs before the pubertal moult) on anemones changed in a yearly cycle from low in the first six months to very high in the second six months. The first occasional young crabs of a generation appeared in March/April (3rd and 4th decapodite stages) on the anemones. Their density increased enormously in the following months. The generation grew gradually on the anemones and moulted into puberty in September-January. Density of adults (crabs after the pubertal moult) on anemones changed in a yearly cycle from low to high from the summer to winter months. A new adult generation was recruited every autumn through the pubertal moult and disappeared in the following summer. Female reproductive activity continued throughout the year. Females carried several broods in succession, but the frequency of breeding females fluctuated on a yearly cycle. The highest percentage of egg-carrying females, i.e. the peak of the reproductive season, lay in the first half of the year. The maximal life span of a generation, from the hatching of the first larvae to the disappearance of the last adults, lasted 1.5 to 2 years. Males moulted into puberty ca one month later than females. The moulting distribution of adult males had roughly the same course as in females. An adult male generation diet out about one to two months before the female generation. Life expectancy was therefore 14 to 17 months for females and 12 to 15 months for males. The sex ratio of juveniles shortly before the pubertal moult was balanced. The sex ratio of adults shifted from 1:1 at the beginning of the reproductive period to ca 1:9 in favour of females at its end.  相似文献

The movements of nine harbour porpoises, Phocoena phocoena (L.), in the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine were tracked using satellite telemetry. Transmitters were attached to the porpoises in August 1994 and 1995 after they were captured near Grand Manan Island at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. Tracking periods ranged from 2 to 212 d (mean 50 ± 65 d). Porpoises exhibited a high degree of individual variation in movement patterns; five moved out of the Bay of Fundy into the Gulf of Maine. The porpoise with the longest tracking period moved extensively throughout the Gulf of Maine. These data suggest that seasonal movement patterns of individual harbour porpoises are discrete and are not temporally coordinated migrations. Porpoises that moved out of the Bay of Fundy into the Gulf of Maine did so following the 92 m isobath, which may represent an important movement corridor. The movement of porpoises from the Bay of Fundy into the Gulf of Maine supports the hypothesis that harbour porpoises from these two regions comprise a single population at risk of entanglement in both Canadian and US fisheries. Abstract. Uncertainty currently exists regarding the extent to which mammalian carnivores suffer from inbreeding depression. In particular, it has been proposed that wolves and species with a similar social structure are adapted to close inbreeding. Empirical data, however, are scarce. This paper provides strong evidence against the contention that natural populations of wolves are resistant to inbreeding depression. We analyzed studbook data of a captive wolf population bred in Scandinavian zoos and found negative effects of inbreeding expressed as reductions in juvenile weight, reproduction, and longevity. The occurrence of an apparently bereditary form of blindness is also associated with inbreeding. Different effects of inbreeding can be attributed to genes originating from different founder pairs, thus indicating that alleles that are deleterious in the homozygous state are fairly common in natural wolf populations.  相似文献

Benthic suspension feeders in shallow waters develop in relation to the food availability and the variation of physical parameters giving rise to complex communities that act as a control factor on the plankton biomass. The aim of the work is to establish the role of the hydrozoan Eudendrium racemosum in the energy transfer from the plankton to the benthos in marine food chains of the North Adriatic Sea. This study highlighted that the hydroid biomass changed over time in relation to temperature and irradiance, and the highest abundance was observed during summer with about 400,000 polyps m−2 (about 19 g C m−2). The population suffered an evident summer decrease in relation to a peak of abundance of its predator, the nudibranch Cratena peregrina, whose adult specimens were able to eat up to 500 polyps day−1 and reached an abundance of 10 individuals m−2. The gut content analysis revealed that the hydroid diet was based on larvae of other benthic animals, especially bivalves and that the amount of ingested preys changed during the year with a peak in summer when it was estimated an average predation rate of 13.7 mg C m−2 day−1. In July, bivalves represented over 60 % of the captured items and about 18 mg C m−2 day−1. Values of biomass of E. racemosum are the highest ever recorded in the Mediterranean Sea, probably supported by the eutrophic conditions of the North Adriatic Sea. Moreover, our data suggest that settling bivalves provide the greater part of the energetic demand of E. racemosum.  相似文献

The tanaidacean Hargeria rapax (Harger, 1879) was sampled along intertidal transects semi-monthly at one site and quarterly at two other sites in salt marshes on Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA, from July 1985 to July 1986. Tanaids were most abundant near the mean highwater line and became progressively less abundant at lower intertidal elevations. Population density was greatest in the winter (December to February) when there were >29 000 individuals/m2 at one high intertidal station. Although reproductive individuals were present most of the year, peaks in reproductive activity occurred in autumn (late August to early November) and spring (early March to mid June). An increase in population density coincided with increased reproductive activity only in autumn. Tanaid cohorts produced in the spring and summer rarely survived beyond 6 to 8 wk, but those produced in the autumn overwintered and lived 22 to 26 wk. The sex ratio among mature individuals was 2.8:1 (females: males). Mature females ranged in size from 2.2 to 3.9 mm total length (TL) and mature males were 2.3 to 4.1 mm TL; there was no significant sexual difference (Student's t-test, P>0.05) in the mean TL of mature individuals. The mean (±SD) size of brooding females was 2.9±0.32 mm TL and the mean (±SD) nunber of offspring/brood was 8.3±4.99 young/female. The timing of tanaid reproduction together with the effects of predation by juvenile fish and crustaceans may account for most of the spatial and temporal patterns of tanaid abundance observed in this study. There was a significant linear relationship (P<0.001, r 2=0.54) between the growth rate (GR, mm/d) of individuals and average daily air temperature (°C) described by the equation: GR=0.00178 (°C)-0.00971. The potential annual contribution of tanaid production to higher trophic levels, estimated from knowledge of standing stocks, growth rates and fecundity, was 5.71, 0.91 and 0.46 g dry wt/m2 for high, mid and low intertidal areas, respectively. The high intertidal marsh, which supports the largest and most persistent standing stock of H. rapax, provides a rich foraging area for aquatic predators at high tide and an important source of recruits from which tanaid populations at lower intertidal elevations are recolonized after periods of intense predation pressure.  相似文献

A comparison of shell growth in Donax trunculus (collected between 1988 and 1990 of Cullera, Spain) has been carried out using an analysis of cohort progression in monthly length frequency distributions, hyaline surface shell growth rings and internal microgrowth bands. In the Mediterranean there are two periods of recruitment of D. trunculus, one in the summer (July to September) and the other in winter (December to February). Clams recruited to the population in winter display a clear cessation in shell growth during the following summer which may possibly be correlated with spawning, whereas individuals of the summer recruited cohort show no growth cessation the following summer and continue to deposit shell during this period. The normally opaque shell of D.trunculus reveals the presence of translucent hyaline growth rings when the shells are backlit by a strong light source, and these have been shown to be laid down in the shell during summer months. Formation of a hyaline ring is accompanied by a narrowing of the microgrowth patterns present in shell sections. Both the hyaline rings and the length frequency distributions have been used to determine the age and growth rate of D. trunculus.  相似文献
