A large proportion of ladybird beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) eggs are apparently infertile—they do not develop an embryo and are consumed by larvae hatching within the egg batch. The predicted benefits of egg consumption for larvae are empirically well supported. An important question, however, remains: are these eggs a maternal strategy to feed offspring (i.e., trophic eggs) or did egg eating evolve to exploit unavoidably infertile eggs? We investigated the adaptive value of infertile eggs in laboratory experiments with multicoloured Asian ladybirds (Harmonia axyridis). Female H. axyridis were assigned to low and high resource environments for brief intervals; we predicted that tactics to facilitate egg cannibalism, such as infertile egg production and hatching asynchrony, would be adopted in low food environments in which starvation risk for offspring is greater. We conducted two experiments in this manner that provided females with information about resource levels through prey feeding or scent. We also observed female oviposition patterns and tested for infertile egg distributions that departed from random. Females produced 56% more infertile eggs in the low vs. the high food treatment; however, hatching synchrony did not change. We consider a potential confound between information and nutrition state unlikely because ladybirds are well able to tolerate low food for 24 h, the duration of trials, and because females were in good condition when trials began. Results suggest that ladybirds use information from prey encounter to manipulate the proportion of trophic eggs in a manner consistent with the adaptive hypothesis, the first evidence of trophic egg plasticity in a non-eusocial insect.  相似文献

A number of recent reports have documented offspring sex ratio biases in birds. However, to date the potential mechanisms that have been put forward to explain the proximate basis for these deviations are entirely speculative. Using a captive population of domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica), I tested the hypothesis that mothers in relatively poor physical condition should overproduce daughters by manipulating maternal body condition around the time of egg laying by continuous egg removal and differing feeding regimes. During treatment, females were fed a controlled quantity of food. This, combined with the high energetic costs of repeated egg production caused a significant reduction in maternal body weight. In contrast, during control when food was available ad libitum, maternal body weight did not decline, despite repeated egg production. No significant deviation from parity was evident in the sex ratio of either the first or second eggs during control, whereas during treatment a significant female bias was evident in not only the first egg, but also in the second egg. The absence of single-egg clutches, the rarity of infertile eggs and the lack of laying delays between eggs strongly suggests that the mechanism of sex ratio adjustment in pigeons occurs prior to ovulation. The highly skewed sex-distribution within the two-egg clutches and the unexpectedly large amount of variation in the yolk weight of eggs produced during treatment (but not control) are consistent with the expectations of pre-ovulatory selective resorption of wrong sex ovarian follicles.  相似文献

A population of Capitella capitata (Fabricius) was sampled from January, 1973 to February, 1974. Size of the worms was measured and sexual maturity determined. There is an extensive breeding season, spawning occurring asynchronously throughout the year. Females containing ripe oocytes were almost always present, but most females at any one time contained immature oocytes. A high percentage of males contained active sperm. Oocytes are not released into the coelomic fluid until almost fully developed, and all are released at a single spawning. A large number of eggs are produced at each spawning and there is some evidence to suggest that larval development may be completely benthonic. Gametes first develop in 7 to 8 month old worms and take about 4 months to complete development. Analyses of the female population structure suggests that there are 3 breeding classes. The growth rate is estimated at 30 mm per year, and few worms are believed to survive longer than 2 years.  相似文献

This study assesses the potential of the tropical loliginid squid Photololigo sp. to lay multiple batches of eggs and examines changes in somatic growth during reproduction. Histological analysis of the ovary and the relative size of the oviduct to mantle weight and ovary weight were used to determine the potential for multiple spawning. Ovaries of mature females always had immature and mature oocytes present, suggesting that not all the oocytes were maturing simultaneously and that multiple batches of eggs were being produced. Furthermore, poor correlations of oviduct weight with body size and ovary weight indicated that mature oocytes were not accumulating in the oviduct for a single spawning event. Both these observations supported the hypothesis that Photololigo sp. has the potential to lay multiple batches of eggs throughout its life. Specific growth rates, length-weight relationships, relative growth of somatic and reproductive tissue and microscopic assessment of muscle tissue were compared between immature and mature females. Growth rates of immature females were almost twice as fast as those of mature females. Mature females also had no large muscle fibres present, suggesting that energy for reproduction was mobilised from the muscle tissue.  相似文献

Aspects of the reproductive biology of the common shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) were studied in Port Erin Bay, Isle of Man, Irish Sea. Size at sexual maturity was determined from the proportions of ovigerous females and of females with maturing ovaries. The size at which 50% of females are mature is estimated (±95% confidence intervals) as 12.5±0.48 mm carapace length. Based on the proportions of ovigerous females and of mature females, the main breeding season was from January to June. Mean ovarian dry weights indicated two broods (winter and summer), with females bearing winter broods (WB) having higher gonad indices than those with summer broods (SB). WB females with non-eyed eggs and with eyed eggs differed in the regression of ovarian dry weight on carapace length, indicating preparation for laying a second brood. In both broods the moult stages of berried females were related to egg stage. Moulting will occur following the release of the brood. During embryonic development, mean egg length and egg volume were larger in all stages, and the mean dry weight of individual eggs of all stages heavier, in WB than in SB; there was no difference in egg number, however. Consequently, reproductive investment, the proportion of female weight devoted to egg production, was 67% higher in WB (0.20±0.04) than in SB (0.12±0.03). There is a significant effect of egg volume on brood weight, but not on egg number. In both broods, egg number was a negatively allometric function of female body size in non-eyed eggs and an isometric function of female body size in eyed eggs. Brood mortality during incubation was higher in SB (17%) than WB (10%). Differences in the reproductive variables and investment between the two broods of C. crangon are discussed in the light of reproductive strategies and life history.Communicated by J.P. Reproductive modes and egg production were studied in 15 species of meso- and bathypelagic copepods from nine Calanoida families in the Arctic Ocean. During shipboard incubation, females of seven species released eggs freely into the water and females of three species produced membrane-bound egg sacs. One species, Aetideopsis rostrata, produced a mass of eggs looking like an egg sac, but the “sac” lacked a membrane and disintegrated within 2 h. Females of four additional species were encountered with membrane-bound egg sacs in the preserved samples. In most families, only one reproductive mode, either egg-carrying (the Euchaetidae, Augaptilidae), or broadcast spawning (the Heterorhabdidae, Spinocalanidae, Scolecitrichidae, Tharybidae, Bathypontiidae) was observed. In contrast, different genera of the Aetideidae family demonstrated different reproductive modes, with broadcast spawning predominant in the benthopelagic species, and both broadcast spawning and egg-brooding in the planktonic species. Clutch size and egg diameter varied widely between species in both broadcast spawners and egg-brooders. In broadcast spawners, the clutch size varied from 1 to 95 eggs female−1, while the average egg diameter ranged from 152 to 440 μm. The clutch size for egg brooders varied between 3 and 82, while average egg diameter varied from 258 to 732 μm. Deep-water broadcast spawners produced much larger eggs compared to surface-dwelling broadcast spawning species. This larger egg size may result in a reduction, or elimination, of feeding during naupliar stages, thereby improving the survival potential of deep-water species.  相似文献

Summary In many insects nutrients transferred by the male at mating are later incorporated into both the eggs and soma of the mated females. Accordingly, it has been suggested that insect females can use these male-derived nutrients for somatic maintenance and enhancement of their fecundity and fitness of their offspring. I this paper we tested the validity of these predictions by studying the longevity and reproductive output of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 times mated female monarchs Danaus plexippus, a nectar-feeding butterfly that is long-lived and strongly polyandrous and emerges as an adult without mature eggs. Females mated five times received ejaculates that corresponded to an average of 38% of their body weight at eclosion. However, we found that the number of times females had mated had no effect on their longevity, life-time fecundity, or egg weight. Although negative evidence should always be interpreted with caution, our study suggests that male-derived nutrients are less important for female longevity and reproductive output than are larval and adult food.  相似文献

Fecundity, egg viability and fecal pellet production are reported for Acartia clausi females collected in the Bay of Naples, Italy, from April to October 1992 and fed either with a diatom (Thalassiosira rotula) or dinoflagellate (Prorocentrum minimum) diet, at food saturated conditions. The diatom diet significantly reduced both egg and fecal pellet production as well as hatching success. Blockage of egg development occurred with both axenic and non-axenic cultures of T. rotula, suggesting that inhibitors were provided by the diatoms and not by the bacteria associated with diatom cultures. Low hatching success was also artificially induced by exposing newly spawned A. clausi eggs to high concentrations of diatom extracts, indicating the presence of deleterious, inhibitory compounds blocking copepod embryogenesis. Fecundity and hatching success diminished significantly with female age. In contrast, female longevity was not significantly modified by food type. The presence of males did not significantly alter fecundity or egg viability. Females continued to produce viable eggs throughout the period of incubation, with and without males, in both food conditions, indicating that remating is infrequent and not necessary to sustain viable egg production in this species. The succession in low and high population densities may therefore be the outcome of variations in survival rates of eggs, rather than reproductive protential perse; such variations may strongly depend on the adult copepod diet.  相似文献

Female birds can influence offspring fitness by varying the relative quantities of egg components they deposit within and between clutches. Antimicrobial proteins (lysozyme, ovotransferrin, and avidin) are significant components of the avian albumen and likely aid in defense of embryos from microbial infection. Within clutches, females may enhance antimicrobial defense of early-laid eggs to protect them from the high risk of infection incurred before the onset of incubation. Among entire clutches, females may invest more resources in young sired by more attractive males because they have higher reproductive value. We tested these hypotheses by quantifying antimicrobial protein distribution within and among clutches in blue tit eggs. Contrary to our hypothesis, clutches showed no differential deposition of lysozyme or avidin within clutches, but eggs laid in the middle of the sequence had higher concentrations of ovotransferrin than eggs in the beginning and end. Consistent with our second hypothesis, we found that females produced eggs with higher concentrations of lysozyme (although not ovotransferrin or avidin) when mated to more attractive (more UV-reflective) males. Furthermore, females mated to polygynous males deposited less lysozyme than those mated to monogamous males. These data suggest that allocation of lysozyme at the clutch level may be a maternal effect mediated by male qualities.  相似文献

In evolutionary biology, whether parents should enhance or reduce parental care according to mate ornamentation is a subject of great debate. However, the evolution of female ornaments can shed light on this question. In theory, female ornamentation should be traded off against fecundity and thus cannot be wholly informative to males without a direct indication of fecundity. Hence, direct cues of offspring quality should affect the relationship between male investment and female ornamentation. Under this hypothesis, we manipulated two direct cues of offspring quality (egg size and color) after first egg laying in the blue-footed booby and registered male incubation patterns. In this species, foot color is a dynamic signal of current condition and in females is traded off with egg size. We found that males spent more time incubating when paired with dull females but only in nests with large eggs. Males also spent less time incubating small dull eggs. Results indicate that egg size, a direct cue of reproductive value, affected the relationship between male effort and female ornamentation. Males may be willing to help females that have invested in offspring at the expense of ornamentation, which suggests compensation when females are in low condition. Another possibility is that males relax their effort when paired with highly ornamented and fecund females because they have high parenting abilities. Our findings suggest that the information conveyed by female ornaments may depend on direct cues of fecundity. Results also highlight that parental decisions are complex, modulated by a combination of information sources.  相似文献

In the fifteen-spined stickleback (Spinachia spinachia), the male alone builds a nest and provides care for the eggs until they hatch. The nest is made of filamentous algae held together with shiny secretional threads of a glycoprotein, here called tangspiggin. Tangspiggin is produced by transformed kidney cells. I investigated how tangspiggin production was related to food intake by giving males low or high food rations. Males in the high-food group produced significantly more tangspiggin than those in the low-food group. Since low food rations did not lead to a significant drop in resting metabolic rate (oxygen consumption), tangspiggin production appears to be one of the first energy-demanding processes to be dropped during food deprivation. Among males given equal food rations, females preferred to mate with those with elevated levels of tangspiggin in their nests. Tangspiggin threads may signal safety for the offspring by keeping the eggs within the nest and protecting them from egg predators. Moreover, the threads become less shiny with age, due to particle deposition, and older nests that may house older (more valuable) eggs are thereby well camouflaged. Tangspiggin provides an honest signal of male condition, acting as an extra-bodily ornament, signaling direct benefits to females or possibly also indirect benefits of "good genes" from a male who is a successful forager.  相似文献

Egg production and viability in the copepod Temora stylifera (collected in the Bay of Naples, Italy in 1992) were strongly dependent on food type. A flagellate (Isochrysis galbana) diet induced the production of good quality eggs that developed to hatching. By contrast, two diatoms (Chaetoceros curvisetum, Phaeodactylum tricornutum) resulted in poor egg quality, with hatching success as low as 20% of total egg production. With the third diatom tested, Skeletonema costatum, females produced eggs for only 3 to 4 d, after which time they either became sterile or died. These results are discussed in relation to previous findings regarding the impact of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum and the diatom Thalassiosira rotula on the hatching success of T. stylifera eggs. Low egg viability was possibly not due to an absence of remating or a deficiency of some specific essential nutrient required for egg development but to the presence of inhibitory compounds blocking cell division during early copepod embryogenesis. This questions the traditional view that diatoms are an important food item regulating copepod secondary production.  相似文献

Egg coloration has been hypothesized to reflect female condition. Because of the proposed physiological costs associated with deposition of biliverdin pigments and because of their conspicuousness, eggs with blue-green coloration may reliably convey information about female or brood quality. We tested the hypothesis that expression of blue-green coloration of eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis) eggs positively correlates to female condition. First, we documented the incidence of egg color polymorphism within the population. We observed that 98% of females laid blue-green eggs while less than 2% laid white eggs and less than 1% laid pink eggs. In a subset of clutches, we used full spectrum reflectance spectrometry (300–700 nm) to compare eggshell coloration to measures of female condition. We found that the color of eggs within clutches was more similar than the color of eggs from different clutches, and that the blue-green eggs have spectral peaks that are consistent with the characteristic absorbance spectra of biliverdin pigmentation. Females in better body condition and older females laid more colorful eggs. Moreover, individual females laid more colorful eggs later in the laying sequence. Overall, these data indicate that egg coloration covaries with female condition, suggesting that egg coloration could function as a reliable signal of female quality or that egg coloration may allow females to recognize eggs laid by conspecific brood parasites.  相似文献

Guira cuckoos, Guira guira, exhibit a rare polygynandrous reproductive system with groups containing several male and female breeders, allowing for important tests of reproductive skew models. Female reproductive strategies involve leaving the group, varying clutch size, egg ejection and infanticide, among others. Here we examined the predictions of reproductive skew models relative to reproductive partitioning among females in groups. We used yolk protein electrophoresis to identify individual females eggs in joint nests. We found that reproductive partitioning favors early-laying females, which lay and incubate more eggs than females that begin laying later. Because the female that lays first tends to switch between repeated nesting bouts, and females do not always contribute eggs to each bout, female reproductive success tends to equalize within groups over time. The pattern of reproductive partitioning differs from that described for anis, another crotophagine joint-nester. We calculated reproductive skew indices for groups in 2 years, for both laying and incubation, as well as an overall population value. These were compared to random skew generated by simulations. Varying degrees of skew were found for different groups, and also across sequential nesting bouts of the same groups. Overall, however, skew did not deviate from random within the population. Nests that reached incubation tended to have lower skew values during the laying phase than nests terminated due to ejection of all eggs followed by desertion. Groups had higher reproductive skew indices in their first nesting bout of the season, and these nests frequently failed. These results illustrate the importance of social organization in determining not only individual, but group success in reproduction, and highlight the flexibility of vertebrate social behavior.Communicated by J. Laboratory experiments on ovigerous females of northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) were used to assess the effects of temperature and food ration on female condition during incubation and examine how combined effects of temperature and female condition influenced egg survival, embryonic development, and larval characteristics. Ovigerous females were maintained at 2°C, 5°C, and 8°C and fed on a low (three times/week; 2–2.7% W/W) or high ration (five times/week at satiation). The increase in temperature accelerated the developmental time of the eggs but their survival at 8°C was reduced. Conversion efficiency of yolk reserves in developing embryos was significantly reduced at elevated temperatures and larvae hatching at 2°C and 5°C were significantly larger and heavier than those hatching at 8°C. The experimental design did not result in any effect of food ration on the energetic condition of females or on egg characteristics and their biochemical composition. However, lower energy reserves were observed for females held at 8°C.  相似文献

Avian incubation is often initiated before all eggs are laid. In altricial birds this has been proposed to facilitate brood reduction through asynchronous hatching. However, in precocial birds eggs normally hatch synchronously even if incubation has started before all eggs are laid. Patterns of incubation start may be the adaptive trait selected for both in altricial and precocial species. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the timing of incubation start in birds. Decreasing egg-size after incubation start may be adaptively related to an early incubation start, either to ensure synchronous hatching or to decrease fitness cost of late hatched eggs. We have measured individual body condition, egg size and start of incubation in common eider Somateria mollissima, a precocial sea-duck which does not feed during the incubation period. Females in poor body condition start to incubate earlier in the laying sequence than those in good body condition. Furthermore females in poor body condition lay smaller final eggs than females in good body condition. The laying of smaller eggs late in the sequence is therefore probably related to energetic or nutritional state. We propose that females in poor body condition start to incubate early to shorten the nest period in order to reduce their mass loss, but at the cost of reduced size and growth of the ducklings from the eggs laid after incubation start. Females in good body condition on the other hand postpone incubation start at the cost of a longer incubation period and a higher mass loss to the benefit of synchronized hatching and a higher survival of ducklings.  相似文献

Streblospio benedicti (Webster) from Tar Landing North Carolina (NC), USA with either planktotrophic or lecithotrophic development were reared under two food levels and three temperature regimes (two mimicking seasonal cycles in NC and one at constant 20°C). During the eight-month experiment no females switched reproductive mode and no significant differences in survivorship or reproductive activity were observed between reproductive types. However, reproductive activity and fecundity-related parameters were subject to influence by food and temperature. Survivorship, body size, and larval production was greater in winter-spring than summer-fall regimes. Higher food levels produced increased survivorship, reproductive activity and egg production in adults with lecithotrophic development but no change in those with planktotrophic development. Body size, egg size, egg number, numbers of larvae per brood pouch, and brood size were strongly correlated in female S. benedicti and most correlation coefficients were similar (or identical) in individuals having planktotrophic and lecithotrophic development. A comparison of egg size and brood size in females from Tar Landing suggests that individuals with the two forms of development package offspring differently but expend approximately equivalent reproductive effort. Larval trophic mode is best viewed as a genetic polymorphism in S. benedicti. Individuals with planktotrophic and lecithotrophic development exhibit similar reproductive responses to environmental variation and there is no evidence for speciation.  相似文献

Offspring survival can be influenced by resources allocated to eggs, which in turn may be affected by the environmental factors the mother experiences during egg formation. In this study, we investigated whether experimentally elevated social interactions and number of neighbouring pairs influence yolk composition of collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis). Social challenge was simulated by presentation of a conspecific female. Experimental females spent more time near the cage and produced eggs with higher androgen concentration, but local breeding density did not affect yolk androgen level. Moreover, we found that females exposed to more intra-specific interactions and those that bred at higher density produced eggs with smaller yolk. These females may be more constrained in foraging time due to more frequent social encounters, and there might be increased competition for food at areas of higher density. In contrast, the present study did not reveal any evidence for the effect of social environment on yolk antioxidant and immunoglobulin levels. However, we found that yolk lutein and immunoglobulin concentrations were related to the female’s H/L ratio. Also, yolk lutein and α-tocopherol levels showed a seasonal increase and were positively related to the female’s plasma carotenoid level. Mothers may incur significant costs by transferring these compounds into the eggs, thus only females in good physiological condition and those that lay eggs later, when food is probably more abundant, could allocate higher amounts to the eggs without compromising their defence mechanisms. Our results suggest that environmental circumstances during egg formation can influence conditions for embryonic development.  相似文献

Several experiments were conducted with starved and fed females of the Arctic copepod Calanus hyperboreus (1) to investigate their lifespan, reproductive period, egg production and egg viability; (2) to study the effect of origin, i.e., Atlantic and Arctic Waters in the Greenland Sea, on the timing of reproduction; and (3) to study the effect of time of collection on the onset of reproductive activity as a first approach to study control mechanisms of the reproductive cycle. Females collected in October produced up to 1,000 eggs and had a maximum lifespan of 164 days without feeding, whereas fed females produced up to ca. 6,000 eggs and survived up to 806 days. These observations support earlier assumptions that females were multiannual-iteroparous, i.e., capable to spawn in successive years, which would be unique for calanoid copepods. In starved females, clutch size decreased significantly with each spawning event. Viable eggs were produced during most of the life time. There was no difference in the timing of reproductive activity between females from the West Spitsbergen Current and the Greenland Sea Gyre. Fed and starved females collected in May and June began to spawn circa 2 and 4 months after collection, respectively, whereas females collected in August and October started spawning at the same time, in the middle of October. This indicates initiation of reproductive activity in the field in August, coincident with the descent into deep waters. Potential cues for the untimely spawning of females collected in spring and ‘unnatural’ feeding in fall experiments are discussed. Their large size, robustness and combination of different types of diapause in their life cycle make C. hyperboreus a good model organism to study diapause control mechanisms.  相似文献

Although evidence is accumulating on the adaptive function of female ornamentation, very little is known about maternal allocation decisions involving sexual signaling and other reproductive functions. Blue egg coloration has been suggested as a sexually selected signal of female quality to males, and some recent studies are in accordance with this hypothesis. Blue eggshell coloration results from the deposition of biliverdin pigment by laying females, which is a potent antioxidant. Thus, egg pigmentation should be costly in terms of antioxidants, an assumption of the signaling hypothesis that has not been tested yet. We induced increased reproductive effort in a set of female pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca through nest removal and measured egg pigmentation and plasma antioxidant levels in relation with a control group. Experimental females showed a negative association between egg color and plasma antioxidant levels, while there was no relationship for control birds. This supports that egg pigmentation is costly in terms of general antioxidant defenses and suggests a tradeoff between the allocations to both traits. Furthermore, experimental females with more colorful eggs raised more fledglings, especially when breeding early. Controls did not show a relationship between egg color and reproductive success. Females laying more colorful eggs could have shifted their allocation decisions towards current reproduction, at the expense of their own antioxidant defenses. Our results highlight that blue egg coloration is a life-history trait, subject to tradeoffs with other attributes, and seems to be especially informative under harsh breeding conditions.  相似文献
