Does ecotoxicology really contribute to our knowledge about the function of an ecosystem or environment? Is ecotoxicology really a science of its own? The answers to these questions must be NO. The reasons lie in the origin and past of ecotoxicology.Like medicine, ecotoxicology does not have its own scientific theory, but rather borrows from other disciplines: the scientific theory of medicine is biology, and that of ecotoxicology is ecology and pharmacology. Neither medicine nor ecotoxicology see the normal status and routine function of their objects under study. Ecotoxicology regards the environment as being adversely impacted by anthropogenic noxes, mainly chemicals, perhaps based on a paradigm of permanent guilt.

Recent advances in vehicle emission control technology have reduced the effectiveness of the conventional tailpipe test used In inspection and maintenance programs. A different approach Is being followed in Harris County, Texas (Houston area), based on identification and correction of misfuellng and tampering. Misfueling Is being identified by using a lead-sensitive test paper to detect lead deposits in the tailpipe that result from using leaded gasoline. Field tests of this procedure demonstrated that it Is reliable and accurate for the Intended purpose. The data also indicated the need to observe certain precautions to avoid contamination and other potential sources of error. This procedure and other emission-related checks have been added to the annual safety inspections. These tests are conducted on vehicles of 1980 model year and later, by approximately 1150 Inspection stations throughout the county that conduct annual safety Inspections. Experience with the first few months of this program has been excellent.  相似文献

The Arctic environment, including sea ice, is changing. The impacts of these changes to Inuit and I?upiat ways of life vary from place to place, yet there are common themes as well. The study reported here involved an exchange of hunters, Elders, and others from Barrow, Alaska, USA, and Clyde River, Nunavut, Canada, as members of a larger research team that also included visiting scientists. Although the physical environments of Barrow and Clyde River are strikingly different, the uses of the marine environment by residents, including sea ice, had many common elements. In both locations, too, extensive changes have been observed in recent years, forcing local residents to respond in a variety of ways. Although generally in agreement or complementary to one another, scientific and indigenous knowledge of sea ice often reflect different perspectives and emphases. Making generalizations about impacts and responses is challenging and should therefore be approached with caution. Technology provides some potential assistance in adapting to changing sea ice, but by itself, it is insufficient and can sometimes have undesirable consequences. Reliable knowledge that can be applied under changing conditions is essential. Collaborative research and firsthand experience are critical to generating such new knowledge.  相似文献

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) whose migration from food packaging is recognized worldwide. However, the real overall food contamination and related consequences are yet largely unknown. Among humans, children’s exposure to BPA has been emphasized because of the immaturity of their biological systems. The main aim of this study was to assess the reproductive impact of BPA leached from commercially available plastic containers used or related to child nutrition, performing ecotoxicological tests using the biomonitoring species Daphnia magna. Acute and chronic tests, as well as single and multigenerational tests were done. Migration of BPA from several baby bottles and other plastic containers evaluated by GC-MS indicated that a broader range of foodstuff may be contaminated when packed in plastics. Ecotoxicological test results performed using defined concentrations of BPA were in agreement with literature, although a precocious maturity of daphnids was detected at 3.0 mg/L. Curiously, an increased reproductive output (neonates per female) was observed when daphnids were bred in the polycarbonate (PC) containers (145.1?±?4.3 % to 264.7?±?3.8 %), both in single as in multigenerational tests, in comparison with the negative control group (100.3?±?1.6 %). A strong correlated dose-dependent ecotoxicological effect was observed, providing evidence that BPA leached from plastic food packaging materials act as functional estrogen in vivo at very low concentrations. In contrast, neonate production by daphnids cultured in polypropylene and non-PC bottles was slightly but not significantly enhanced (92.5?±?2.0 % to 118.8?±?1.8 %). Multigenerational tests also revealed magnification of the adverse effects, not only on fecundity but also on mortality, which represents a worrying trend for organisms that are chronically exposed to xenoestrogens for many generations. Two plausible explanations for the observed results could be given: a non-monotonic dose–response relationship or a mixture toxicity effect.  相似文献

Numerous chemical products are dispersed into the environment, and the consequences can be sometimes harmful to humans and ecosystems. Pharmaceutical compounds and hormone steroids are among these substances that concern the scientific community. Currently, little data are available on the presence and fate of these compounds in the environment and, in particular, for solid matrices. Therefore, the aim of this work was to perform soil column experiments to evaluate the accumulation, transfer and degradation of these substances in soil. The analyses were based on efficient sample preparation followed by sensitive and selective liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). For this purpose, 23 compounds were chosen including both pharmaceutical compounds as well as steroid hormones. In addition, this experiment was performed on two soils with different properties (% clay, pH, etc.). To the best of our knowledge, no soil column experiments have been performed previously on a large number of pharmaceutical compounds and steroid hormones. Unmanned aerial vehicles, or ‘drones’, appear to offer a flexible, accurate and affordable solution to some of the technical challenges of nature conservation monitoring and law enforcement. However, little attention has been given to their possible social impacts. In this paper, I review the possible social impacts of using drones for conservation, including on safety, privacy, psychological wellbeing, data security and the wider understanding of conservation problems. I argue that negative social impacts are probable under some circumstances and should be of concern for conservation for two reasons: (1) because conservation should follow good ethical practice; and (2) because negative social impacts could undermine conservation effectiveness in the long term. The paper concludes with a call for empirical research to establish whether the identified social risks of drones occur in reality and how they could be mitigated, and for self-regulation of drone use by the conservation sector to ensure good ethical practice and minimise the risk of unintended consequences.  相似文献

Introduction

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the most active component in environmental system and its chemical and structural characteristics most likely influence its biodegradation. Four surface soil (0?C20?cm) and three core sediment samples (0?C10?cm) were collected from Wuliangsuhai Lake. The objectives of this study were to investigate the spectral properties and humification degree of DOM and to determine and discuss comparatively the complexing capacities and stability constants of DOM by Cu (II) in the Hetao region.

Materials and methods

In this study, fluorescence spectra and fluorescence quenching methods were used to evaluate the humification degree of DOM and calculate the complexing capacities and the stability constants between DOM and Cu (II).

Results and discussion

Two defined peaks, at wavelengths of 260??300?nm (peak I) and 300??350?nm (peak II), could be identified for soil DOM at a ???? value of 30?nm. In sediment DOM extracts, a third peak (III) was observed near 364?nm. The results show that there is a significant difference in the structure of DOM because of different sources. The humification degree is significantly higher for soil samples than those of sediment samples. The FT-IR spectra of DOM show that structure in sediment DOM is more functional groups than those in soil DOM. DOM has a stronger Cu binding affinity in soils than in sediment in the Hetao region, which may lead to potentially significant influence on the migration and transformation of Cu (II).  相似文献

Soil remediation has only a short history but the problem addressed is a significant one. Cost estimates for the clean-up of contaminated sites in the European Union and the United States are in the order of magnitude of 1,400 billion ECU. Such an enormous operation deserves the best management it can get. Reliable cost estimations per contaminated site are an important prerequisite. This paper addresses the problems related to site-wise estimations. When solving soil remediation problems, we have to deal with a large number of scientific disciplines. Too often solutions are presented from the viewpoint of only one discipline. In order to benefit from the combined disciplinary knowledge and experience, we think that it is necessary to describe the interrelations between these disciplines. This can be realized by developing an adequate model of the desired process which enables to consider and evaluate the essential factors as interdependent components of the total system. The resulting model provides a binding paradigm to the contributing disciplines which will result in improved efficiency and effectivity of the decision and the cost estimation process. In the near future, we will release the “Biosparging and Bioventing Expert Support System”, an expert support system for problem owners, consultants and authorities dealing with the design and operation of a biosparging and/or a bioventing system.  相似文献

This article Introduces a technology for the simultaneous control of the emissions of PCDD/ PCDF, hydrochloric acid (HCI) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from municipal solid waste (MSW) Incinerators. The technology uses ammonia as the control medium for all three pollutants. In this paper, the theoretical basis of the technology Is discussed. In addition, a bench-scale experiment proving the theory Is described and the practical application of the theory Is presented. Food waste is the most difficult waste to manage because of the high treatment costs and the risk of environmental contamination. Wheat straw burning has become an increasingly discussed topic in recent years because of the air pollution it causes. However, food waste and wheat straw contain high amounts of nutrient elements; efficient utilization of these wastes can improve the environment by lessening airborne pollutant emission and the amount of waste that must be landfilled. It is well known that use of low-cost and abundant waste materials in microbial fermentations can reduce product costs. We aimed to use these resources while improving laccase production by the endophytic fungus Phomopsis liquidambari B3. We cultured P. liquidambari B3 in medium containing food waste and wheat straw as the main nitrogen and carbon sources, respectively. We optimized the fermentation conditions by response surface methodology (RSM), using a Box–Behnken design for RSM I and a central composite design for RSM II. Optimization resulted in an 11.07-fold (1.98-fold RSM I; 5.59-fold RSM II) increase in laccase yield compared with that before optimization. The model was validated by mathematical evaluations and by comparisons between predicted and experimental values. Under optimized conditions, 53.76% of lignin in wheat straw was degraded. By optimizing fermentation conditions and using multiple bioresources, laccase production by this fungus was increased. These results provide the foundation for future research and for scaled-up laccase production.
Implications:Food waste and wheat straw are waste products, but they could be bioresources if they were managed properly. In this work, we innovatively used a mixture of food waste and wheat straw as a substrate for the novel strain Phomopsis liquidambari B3 to produce laccase. This process, which provided the foundation for the subsequent research and for scaled-up laccase production, offers solutions for both rural and urban pollution problems: that is, it reduces the amount of waste material that needs to be disposed of by burning or dumping, and it also produces a valuable product.  相似文献

PCDD/Fs are one of the most studied molecules in the world because of their toxicity. In the last years the toxicity of these compounds has been analyzed in details. For years PCDD/F inventories have pointed out the significant role of municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators in the overall balance. Recently, thanks to new regulations on PCDD/F emissions, in a few countries this scenario is changing: it can be demonstrated that modern MSW incinerators can play a secondary role even if the percentage of MSW sent to combustion has increased. In the latest inventories an unconventional source of PCDD/F has appeared: in nineties some biogas characterizations have demonstrated that there is a release of PCDD/F from MSW sanitary landfills. In addition, the combustion of collected biogas can generate not negligible amounts of PCDD/F. A new question can be put: does the MSW contribute with other management options to the overall balance of PCDD/F? The present work points out that a detailed inventory should take into account also the PCDD/F release from bio-mechanical treatment plants (both composting and bio-drying/bio-stabilization plants). However the contribution from this option is secondary when it is compared with the one from old MSW incinerators.  相似文献

Forest degradation in West Africa is generally thought to have negative consequences on rural livelihoods but there is little overview of its effects in the region because the importance of forests to rural livelihoods has never been adequately quantified. Based on data from 1014 rural households across Burkina Faso and Ghana this paper attempts to fill this knowledge gap. We demonstrate that agricultural lands and the non-forest environment including parklands are considerably more valuable to poor as well as more well-off rural households than forests. Furthermore, product types supplied by the non-forest environment are almost identical with those from forests. Accordingly, forest clearance/degradation is profitable for and, hence, probably performed by rural people at large. We attribute rural people's high reliance on non-forest versus forest resources to the two countries' restrictive and inequitable forest policies which must be reformed to promote effective forest conservation, e.g., to mitigate climate change.  相似文献

Using a relational approach, I examine several cultural dimensions involved in household water access and use in Newtok, Alaska. I describe the patterns that emerge around domestic water access and use, as well as the subjective lived experiences of water insecurity including risk perceptions, and the daily work and hydro-social relationships involved in accessing water from various sources. I found that Newtok residents haul water in limited amounts from a multitude of sources, both treated and untreated, throughout the year. Household water access is tied to hydro-social relationships predicated on sharing and reciprocity, particularly when the primary treated water access point is unavailable. Older boys and young men are primarily responsible for hauling water, and this role appears to be important to male Yupik identity. Many interviewees described preferring to drink untreated water, a practice that appears related to cultural constructions of natural water sources as pure and self-purifying, as well as concerns about the safety of treated water. Concerns related to the health consequences of low water access appear to differ by gender and age, with women and elders expressing greater concern than men. These preliminary results point to the importance of understanding the cultural dimensions involved in household water access and use. I argue that institutional responses to water insecurity need to incorporate such cultural dimensions into solutions aimed at increasing household access to and use of water.  相似文献

Although it occurred nearly 50 years ago, the nuclear reactor fire of October 1957 at Windscale Works, Sellafield, England, continues to attract interest. Several attempts have been made to quantify the releases of radionuclides and their radiological consequences, but additional information and a re-analysis of meteorological data encourage a further examination of emissions. The limited instrumentation of the reactor provided little relevant information and, as in previous estimates, the discharges are deduced from environmental evidence, but here the recent meteorological analysis is used. The interpretation of the meteorological and environmental evidence requires both timing and quantity of the emitted radionuclides to be considered together.Significant fission product emission continued from about 15:00 or 16:00 on 10 October 1957 until noon the following day. There were two main peaks in discharge rate, during the evening and early hours and from roughly 06:00 until 10:30, and the amounts emitted during each of these periods were probably comparable.Iodine-131 (131I), caesium-137 (137Cs) and polonium-210 (210Po) activities dominated the radioactive emissions and there is sufficient environmental evidence for releases of these radionuclides to be estimated within a factor of about two. (Some additional 131I may have escaped in a chemical form that was not included in the estimate, but it appears likely that the fraction was small.) There is evidence that the plume extended further east than accepted in previous assessments and the estimates of quantities emitted have been increased to allow for this. For other radionuclides the environmental measurements were fewer and the uncertainties are greater.  相似文献

Results are summarized of a comprehensive study of the effects on the SCR process of all major possible poisons encountered in the combustion gases from U.S. coals. A general rule evolved from this study Is that the effect of the additive on the catalyst activity Is directly related to the basicity of the additive; poisoning Is caused by the basicity. Quantitative effects are presented, while a qualitative summary is given as follows: strong poisons-alkali metal oxides; weak poisons-oxides of alkaline earth metals, arsenic, lead phosphorus and chlorides of strong alkaline metals. SO2 is a promoter due to its acidity. HCI, although acidic, reacts with both NH3 (forming NH4CI) and V2O5 (forming VCI2 and VCI3) and consequently strongly deactivates the SCR reaction.

A summary is also given for a theoretical and experimental study of the monolithic honeycomb reactor using both undoped and poison-doped catalysts. The results showed that the reactor performance can be predicted directly from the intrinsic catalyst activity through a model.  相似文献

Science's all-consuming drive to make new discoveries often risks losing sight of what was already known at one time—that which already exists in the published literature. Inadequate attention to the published literature and insufficient time devoted to its mining and synthesis into new knowledge is a problem faced by all disciplines, especially highly interdisciplinary fields such as environmental forensics, whose knowledge base is fragmented across numerous disciplines. While the conduct of science applies principles of quality assurance to a wide array of its processes, how pervasive are quality controls designed to ensure that planned or ongoing research has not been undertaken before? Has sufficient energy been devoted to mining what has already been discovered and synthesizing it into a larger, more useful perspective?This paper touches on the liabilities associated with insufficient examination of an exponentially growing published literature (“literature forensics”) and offers some suggestions for achieving a better balance between original work and capturing what has already been reported—all essential to the growing responsibility of knowledge management. By lessening the importance of the published literature, are we asymptotically approaching a point where science may be preoccupied with publishing “new” findings while few have time to assimilate what has already been published?  相似文献

Sampling of canopy fluxes (throughfall and stemflow) below low structured vegetation with a small-scale, intricate canopy architecture is difficult, and representative sampling with most methods is questionable. In the present study, two sampling methods for canopy fluxes below grassland vegetation are compared. Method I sampled canopy fluxes of moisture inefficiently, because stemflow volumes were not quantitatively included. Canopy fluxes of ions calculated with method I necessitated assumptions on equal concentrations in actually sampled throughfall and non-sampled stemflow. Method II sampled canopy fluxes of ions quantitatively, because the total volume of throughfall and stemflow percolated through a mixed bed of ion exchange resins below the canopy. Ion-specific differences between the two methods were observed. For ions with foliar leaching, such as K+ and Ca2+, higher canopy fluxes were recorded with method II than with method I. In contrast, for ions with foliar uptake, such as NH4+ and NO3-, canopy fluxes were found to be less with method II than with method I. Canopy fluxes of inorganic nitrogen below Mesobrometum grassland were 2.35 and 1.52 kmol(c) ha(-1) year(-1) for methods I and II, respectively, and 2.85 and 7.90 kmol(c) ha(-1) year(-1) for K+. It is argued that these differences result from under-estimated (foliar leaching) or over-estimated (foliar uptake) concentrations in stemflow by the first method. Canopy fluxes for SO4(2-) were not statistically different, indicating that canopy exchange of SOx was quantitatively unimportant, and that both methods estimated atmospheric input equally well.  相似文献

Speciated volatile organic compound (VOC) and carbon monoxide (CO) measurements from the Marylebone Road site in central London from 1998 through 2008 are presented. Long-term trends show statistically significant decreases for all the VOCs considered, ranging from ?3% to ?26% per year. Carbon monoxide decreased by ?12% per year over the measurement period. The VOC trends observed at the kerbside site in London showed greater rates of decline relative to trends from monitoring sites in rural England (Harwell) and a remote high-altitude site (Hohenpeissenberg), which showed decreases for individual VOCs from ?2% to ?13% per year. Over the same 1998 through 2008 period VOC to CO ratios for London remained steady, an indication that emissions reduction measures affected the measured compounds equally. Relative trends comparing VOC to CO ratios between Marylebone Road and Hohenpeissenberg showed greater similarities than absolute trends, indicating that emissions reductions measures in urban areas are reflected by regional background locations. A comparison of VOC mixing ratios and VOC to CO ratios was undertaken for London and other global cities. Carbon monoxide and VOCs (alkanes greater than C5, alkenes, and aromatics) were found to be strongly correlated (>0.8) in the Annex I countries, whereas only ethene and ethyne were strongly correlated with CO in the non-Annex I countries. The correlation results indicate significant emissions from traffic-related sources in Annex I countries, and a much larger influence of other sources, such as industry and LPG-related sources in non-Annex I countries. Yearly benzene to ethyne ratios for London from 2000 to 2008 ranged from 0.17 to 0.29 and compared well with previous results from US cities and three global megacities.  相似文献
