Summary Adult bananaquits on negative energy budgets were presented with a patch containing two flower types with identical mean rewards, but different variances. The flower patch contained a random array of 85 yellow and 85 red artificial flowers. Flowers of one color were filled with the same quantity of nectar (constant flowers); flowers of the other color were filled with variable quantities of nectar (variable flowers). In the first series of experiments the birds were given three presentations, followed by three more presentations with the flower colors reversed, to control for color preferences. Some individuals were occasionally indifferent during a presentation, but overall the birds significantly preferred the constant flowers. In the second series of experiments two birds were give five presentations of the floral patch during a day at a rate less than minimally required to meet all 24-h energy costs. In all experiments, bananaquits on negative energy budgets were either indifferent or risk-averse, but never risk-prone. The absence of risk-prone foraging might be attributed to resource dispersion pattern, reward skew, or a species characteristic.  相似文献

Summary Risk-sensitive foraging theory predicts that predators which face starvation if there is a temporary shortfall in their food supply should choose feeding sites on the basis of variation in as well as mean expected reward rate. For a given mean reward rate they should choose high variance feeding sites (be risk-prone) if they are running below energy requirement, but low variance sites (be risk-averse) if they are running above.Common shrews presented with a choice between constant and variable feeding stations were more likely to visit the variable station when they were running below energy requirement and more likely to visit the constant station when they were running above. However, the tendency towards risk-aversion above requirement was greater than that towards risk-proneness below. When all shrews were considered together, the probability of visiting the variable station correlated negatively and continuously with intake relative to requirement.  相似文献

Summary A model of risk-sensitive foraging based on a continuously foraging but interruptable predator is developed and tested in a simple choice experiment using common shrews.Given a choice of two feeding stations, shrews behaved in accordance with the broad predictions of the model. Having been trained below their estimated food requirement, shrewss preferred the station y elding the higher mean reward rate, but prefereence for a constant (constant reward rate) or risky variable reward rate) station was influenced by experience of variance in reward rate at the risky station.Preference was influenced most clearly by experience of reward rate variance during tests rather than training.  相似文献

Summary Foraging theory depicts dietary choice as a function of prey quality and absolute abundance. Ecological processes, however, can depend on the way foragers respond to the relative abundances of available prey types; several models for frequency-dependent foraging adequately describe these responses. Our laboratory experiments with white-throated sparrows investigated preferential choice of two food rewards as we manipulated both reward quality and relative abundance. In any single experiment the two rewards provided the same mean food quantity, but the variances differed. Average energy budgets predicted risk-aversion, so that foraging preference should decrease as reward variance increases. We presented each two-reward pairing at availability ratios of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1 for three consecutive days. By the third day risk-aversion exceeded preference for reward variance significantly. When relative abundances of the low and high variance rewards were not equal, the birds tended to prefer the rare over the common reward. This response began before the birds had thoroughly sampled the reward distributions. Preference for rarity apparently constrained the birds' economic response to reward variance levels.  相似文献

Gap Crossing Decisions by Forest Songbirds during the Post-Fledging Period   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Gaps in forest cover, created by agriculture, forestry, and other anthropogenic activities, are assumed to impede the movements of many forest songbirds. Little is known, however, about the reluctance of different species of birds to cross habitat gaps. We studied this by inducing birds in the post-fledging period to cross gaps of varying widths and to choose between routes through woodland or across open areas by attracting them to a recording of mobbing calls by Chickadees (  Parus atricapillus). In 278 experiments conducted in boreal forest and agricultural landscapes near Québec city, 157 birds or flocks of birds of five species were attracted. Overall, birds were twice as likely to travel through 50 m of woodland than through 50 m in the open to reach the recording. When given a choice of traveling through woodland or across a gap, the majority of respondents preferred woodland routes, even when they were three times longer than shortcuts in the open. However, species differed greatly in their response to gaps. Our results show that woodland links significantly facilitate movements of birds across fragmented landscapes.  相似文献

Summary To study risk aversion in hand-reared bananaquits (Coereba flaveola) we placed individuals in a cage with a 1 m2 floral board having a random array of 85 yellow and 85 red artificial flowers. Flowers of one color were filled with the same quantity of nectar (constant flowers), whereas flowers of the other color were filled with variable quantities of nectar (variable flowers). The constant and variable flowers had identical mean contents, only their variances differed. After three presentations, the constant flowers were made variable and vice versa to control for color preferences. Naive foragers tended to avoid variable flowers. The degree of risk aversion was influenced by previous experience, the relative variability of the variable flowers, and flower color. Variable flowers having similar coefficients of variation, but different reward variables (volume or concentration) resulted in similar levels of risk aversion. Within single foraging episodes the following was observed: sequences of constant flowers increased while sequences of variable flowers remained similar to random foraging; the probability of revisiting a constant flower was higher than revisiting a variable flower; the average amount of nectar consumed from constant and variable flowers was similar within the assessment periods (prior to favoring constant flowers); the proportion of visits falling below the mean expected reward during the assessment period or its inverse (the proportion visited with at least the equivalent of the mean) may be a cue used for risk aversion; risk aversion persisted through long foraging bouts despite changed nectar distributions suggesting that the bananaquits did not track resource distributions well within foraging bouts.  相似文献

Habitat use pattern and status of shorebirds in southern India were investigated in six tidal flats comprising three mudflats and three sand flats on the east coast of southern India. Totally, 7757 shorebirds belonging to 21 species were recorded during September 2000–March 2002. The birds preferred mudflats over sand flats. Density, diversity and richness of shorebirds were relatively higher in tidal flats, especially in mudflats. The shorebirds preferred mudflats over sand flats as stopover sites and sites for refueling the required energy during migration. Rhythmic changes in tidal pattern also influenced the allochthonous nutrients and prey species, which also attracted the migratory shorebirds. However, the abundance of shorebirds with reference to tidal flats *season*tide and habitats*seasons * tide had strong variations (P < 0.001). During migratory season, bird density, diversity and species richness were observed higher than in other seasons.  相似文献

We investigated migration and wintering of adult northern gannets (Morus bassanus) breeding in east Scotland, North Sea, by deploying geolocation loggers over three winters. The wintering ranges of these birds varied from the North Sea to the Atlantic off West Africa. Flight time was taken as a proxy for migration and foraging effort. Gannets wintering off Africa had higher total flight times during migration than birds wintering further north. Total flight times in different wintering regions were generally low. Birds off West Africa consistently spent < 25 % of daylight hours in flight, but birds further north showed more variable values that may reflect more variable weather or food availability. Winter sea surface temperatures ranged from 9 °C (North Sea) to 16 °C (West Africa). Thermostatic costs in winter as estimated by measuring thermal conductance in carcasses in still air and water were 28 % higher in North Sea than off West Africa. This effect is aggravated by higher thermostatic costs caused by stronger wind chills in the North Sea compared to the conditions off West Africa. Birds wintering close to the UK arrived at the colony on average 12 days earlier than birds wintering off West Africa. We conclude that the net cost-benefit analysis may be similar for all wintering areas investigated.  相似文献

Summary Winter flocks of crested tits Parus cristatus, typically consisting of two adults and one or two non-kin 1st-year birds, were observed to split up into subflocks in a way related to ambient temperature. On warm days, when they were foraging in subflocks without 1 st-year birds, alpha males always occupied the most preferred upper foraging sites, as expected from their top dominance rank. On cold days, when foraging in flocks with 1st-year birds, 8 out of 13 alpha males shifted to lower (less preferred) positions below their alpha mates while allowing the latter to forage at the best sites. As enhanced access to preferred microsites on days with high energy stress is believed to increase overwinter survival probability, this shifting behaviour of alpha males can be considered as a form of mate care. Out of 13 alpha males, however, 5 did not shift and always occupied the best foraging sites irrespective of flock composition. As (i) these non-shifting males were in poorer physical condition than shifting males, (ii) they scanned significantly less for predators than either females or shifting males when foraging in the uppermost tree parts, and (iii) four out of five non-shifting males were replaced by immigrants in early spring, absence of mate care during winter may be caused by constraints due to condition. High-quality-territory owners in poor condition at the end of autumn were most vulnerable to replacement by immigrants. Therefore, as four out of five replacements affected high-quality territories, selective intrusion by immigrants is suggested. Correspondence to: L. Lens  相似文献

Recency preference of odour memory retrieval in honeybees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Free-flying honeybees (Apis mellifera) were trained on tasks in which they had to choose one of three odours for a reward of sugar water. In acquisition, the bees learned this task in about five trials of training. Unrewarded retention tests showed that the odour memory was retained after 24-h delay. These findings are unsurprising. Integration experiments were then performed in which the bees had to learn two successive tasks of odour discrimination with conflicting demands. In task 1 (20 trials), one of three odours provided sugar water while the other two provided tap water. In task 2 (ten trials), which followed task 1 immediately, a different odour provided the reward. The bees were given unrewarded tests immediately after training on task 2 and then tested again after 10 min, 22 h or 24 h. The 22-h delay coincided with the circadian time for the start of task 1 training, while the 24 h coincided with the circadian time for the end of the task 2 training. Bees strongly preferred the rewarded odour for task 2 on immediate testing and after a 10-min delay. After delays of 22 and 24 h, they still preferred the rewarded odour for task 2. We conclude that the most recently acquired odour memory dominates behaviour in honeybees. The close association between floral odour and reward availability under natural circumstances may predispose honeybees to rely more on the most recently rewarded odour cue rather than on circadian time.  相似文献

Reproduction in birds requires the input of time and energy during discrete breeding phases leading to investment trade-offs between laying date, clutch size, body mass, and incubation constancy. We investigated costs during incubation by experimentally enlarging 25 clutches of white-tailed ptarmigan Lagopus leucurus. The experiment was conducted in 2 years, one with harsh weather that forced a natural delay in reproduction. When forced to delay egg-laying, females began incubation with poorer body condition and foraged more during incubation. Rates of mass loss during incubation were not affected by clutch enlargement, and did not differ between harsh and benign years; however, females that were heavier at the start of incubation lost more mass than lighter females. Clutch-enlarged females had reduced nest attendance compared to control birds in both years and incubation periods increased by up to 2 days relative to controls. In the harsh year, there was a trend for clutch-enlarged females to have lower nest success, but there was no effect on overwinter survival. Different behavioral responses by females in the 2 years showed that incubation costs may depend on other factors such as female quality, food supply, or weather conditions. Incubation is a dynamic period during which birds may adjust energy balances by varying body condition and food intake. Besides the "normal" challenge of obtaining adequate intake rates in a patchy and dangerous world, shorebirds foraging in intertidal habitats face additional environmental hurdles. The tide forces them to commute between a roosting site and feeding grounds, twice a day. Moreover, because intertidal food patches are not all available at the same time, shorebirds should follow itineraries along the best patches available at a given time. Finally, shorebirds need additional energy stores in order to survive unpredictable periods of bad weather, during which food patches are covered by extreme tides. In order to model such tide-specific decisions, we applied stochastic dynamic programming in a spatially explicit context. Two assumptions were varied, leading to four models. First, birds had either perfect (ideal) or no (non-ideal) information about the intake rate at each site. Second, traveling between sites was either for free or incurred time and energy costs (non-free). Predictions were generated for three aspects of foraging: area use, foraging routines, and energy stores. In general, non-ideal foragers should feed most intensely and should maintain low energy stores. If traveling for such birds is free, they should feed at a random site; otherwise, they should feed close to their roost. Ideal foragers should concentrate their feeding around low tide (especially when free) and should maintain larger energy stores (especially when non-free). If traveling for such birds is free, they should feed at the site offering the highest intake rate; otherwise, they should trade off travel costs and intake rate. Models were parameterized for Red Knots (Calidris canutus) living in the Dutch Wadden Sea in late summer, an area for which detailed, spatially explicit data on prey densities and tidal heights are available. Observations of radio-marked knots (area use) and unmarked knots (foraging routines, energy stores) showed the closest match with the ideal/non-free model. We conclude that knots make state-dependent decisions by trading off starvation against foraging-associated risks, including predation. Presumably, knots share public information about resource quality that enables them to behave in a more or less ideal manner. We suggest that our modeling approach may be applicable in other systems where resources fluctuate in space and time.  相似文献

In variable environments, organisms are bound to track environmental changes if they are to survive. Most marine mammals and seabirds are colonial, central-place foragers with long-term breeding-site fidelity. When confronted with environmental change, such species are potentially constrained in their ability to respond to these changes. For example, if environmental conditions deteriorate within their limited foraging range, long-lived species favour adult survival and abandon their current breeding effort, which ultimately influences population dynamics. Should poor conditions persist over several seasons, breeding-site fidelity may force animals to continue breeding in low-quality habitats instead of emigrating towards more profitable grounds. We assessed the behavioural response of a site-faithful central-place forager, the Cape gannet Morus capensis, endemic to the Benguela upwelling system, to a rapid shift in the distribution and abundance of its preferred prey, small pelagic shoaling fish. We studied the distribution and the abundance of prey species, and the diet, foraging distribution, foraging effort, energy requirements, and breeding success of gannets at Malgas Island (South Africa) over four consecutive breeding seasons. Facing a rapid depletion of preferred food within their foraging range, Cape gannets initially increased their foraging effort in search of their natural prey. However, as pelagic fish became progressively scarcer, breeding birds resorted to scavenging readily available discards from a nearby demersal fishery. Their chicks cannot survive on such a diet, and during our 4-year study, numbers of breeding birds at the colony decreased by 40% and breeding success of the remaining birds was very low. Such behavioural inflexibility caused numbers of Cape gannets breeding in Namibia to crash by 95% following over-fishing of pelagic fish in the 1970s. In the context of rapid environmental changes, breeding-site fidelity of long-lived species may increase the risk of local or even global extinction, rendering these species particularly vulnerable to global change.  相似文献

Flightlessness and the energetic cost of wing molt in a large sea duck   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Although the replacement of feathers apparently represents the major event of somatic production in the annual cycle of wild birds, knowledge about the energetics of molt has always been hampered by logistical and technical difficulties, which are exacerbated by the fact that birds are able to compensate behaviorally to buffer any variation in energy demand. During wing molt, sea ducks (Mergini) and other diving birds lose all of their wing feathers at once, leading to a period of temporary flightlessness of variable duration, a condition that considerably restricts their movements and increases the probability of predation. In the present study, we present the first results aimed at quantifying the duration of flightlessness, energy expenditure, and foraging effort during molt of a wing-propelled diving bird, the Common Eider (Somateria mollissima). Data loggers were implanted in the body cavity of 13 females to record heart rate and hydrostatic pressure (depth) every two seconds for a period of 220 days. Flight frequency and duration were assessed from elevated and constant heart rate, and the absence of flight was used to quantify the duration of flightlessness, which lasted, on average, 36 +/- 8 days (mean +/- SD). Using a period of four weeks before and four weeks after the flightless period, we found that dive depth (ranging from 1 to 2 m, on average) and daily diving time did not vary during the course of the study. Daily metabolic rate increased by 9%, and resting metabolic rate by 12% from the pre-molt period to the flightless period and remained high during the post-molt period. This study indicates that the energetic costs of replacing flight remiges in female eiders are substantial, although this is not associated with any change in foraging effort, which suggests that female Common Eiders lose mass during wing molt. Finally, estimates of energy savings associated with the total absence of flights during wing molt represent 6% of daily metabolic rate or 14% of resting metabolic rate. This finding contrasts with the classical view that little or no benefit is associated with a flightless condition. We suggest that such energy savings may have favored the evolution of temporary flightlessness in diving birds.  相似文献

Summary Dominance interactions among captive siskins were examined to see if the behavior of dominants reduced the risk of subordinates leaving the flock. The outcome of aggressive encounters was related to the possession status of the two birds (i.e., which bird was first to arrive at the contested resource) and the type of aggression used (i.e., display or attack). More dominant birds were successful whether they were possessors or intruders, and whether they attacked or displayed. When possessors, they tended to display, presumably because of the greater cost of attack and the lack of substantial benefits associated with it. When intruding, they tended to attack, possibly because attack is slightly more successful than display. When initiating encounters against dominants, subordinates were more successful if they were possessors than if they were intruders. Subordinates tended to use displays whether they were possessors or intruders, even though when the birds were intruding, displays were less successful than attacks. Subordinates may use display when intruding because attack holds a higher risk of retaliation. The fact that siskins can repel more dominant intruders merely by using displays suggests that dominants, by respecting possession and allowing reversals, are able to reduce the likelihood that subordinates will leave the flock. This may be to the dominants' long-term advantage, since they gain benefits from being in stable flocks.  相似文献

Since forager honeybees change their food-unloading behavior according to nectar-source profitability, an experiment was performed in order to analyze whether food-receivers modify their within-hive tasks related to different reward conditions. We offered individual foragers two reward conditions at a rate feeder while an additional feeder offered a constant reward and was of free access to the rest of the hive. Both feeders were the only food sources exploited by the colony during the assays since a flight chamber was used. After receiving nectar, hive bees performed processing cycles that involved several behaviors and concluded when they returned to the delivery area to receive a new food sample. During these cycles, receivers mainly performed oral contacts offering food, or inspected cells, and often both. In the latter case, both behaviors occurred simultaneously and at the same distance from the hive entrance. When they performed a single task, either the occurrence of cell inspections increased or contact offerings decreased for the highest reward rate offered to the donor-forager. Receivers also begged for food more often after interacting with low-profit foragers. Thus, the profitability of the food source exploited by nectar-forager honeybees could affect receiver behaviors within the hives based on individual-to-individual interactions.Communicated by R.F.A. Many young birds on the Arctic tundra are confronted by a challenging task: they must molt their feathers and accumulate fat stores for the autumn migration before climatic conditions deteriorate. Our understanding of the costs and constraints associated with these stages is extremely limited. We investigated post-juvenal molt and premigratory fattening in free-ranging juvenile White-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii) on the Arctic tundra. We found evidence for trade-offs between premigratory fat accumulation and molt: heavily molting birds had significantly less fat. Birds increased the rate of fat accumulation as the season progressed, but we found no evidence of a similar increase in rate of molt. Using a controlled captive study to isolate the energetic costs of body feather replacement, we found no difference in fat or size-corrected mass of birds actively growing body feathers as compared to controls. Molting birds, however, consumed 17% more food than controls, suggesting a significant cost of body feather growth. Our results provide evidence of significant costs, constraints, and trade-offs associated with post-juvenal molt and premigratory fat accumulation in young Arctic birds.  相似文献

Summary Australia has many cooperatively breeding species of birds. These tend to occur in eucalypt and semi-arid woodlands rather than in rainforests or deserts. They tend to be insectivores that pursue rather than sit and wait for their prey, and tend to forage on the ground rather than above it. We propose that environments where resources do not show marked seasonal fluctuations are those in which cooperative breeding is most likely to evolve. Under these conditions birds might experience difficulty acquiring the extra food necessary to breed, especially if inexperienced. When adult survival was high, young and inexperienced birds could delay breeding. Unpredictable environments may also favor cooperative breeding, but our data do not strongly support this. Groupliving would be favored further if young birds are particularly vulnerable to predators when alone. They should therefore remain in the family group and delay their dispersal unitl a suitable breeding vacancy becomes available. These hypotheses are not mutually exclusive, but are complementary. Both may be required to ensure that at least some year-old birds do not breed and also do not disperse. We believe that they give rise to predictions, which can be tested in future field studies.  相似文献
