The reproductive cycles of the serpulid polychaetes Pomatoceros lamarckii (Quatrefages, 1865, as Vermilia) and P. triqueter (Linnaeus, 1767, as Serpula triquetra) were studied by histological examination during 1999 and 2000 at Bantry Bay, south-west Ireland. Gametogenesis, sex ratios and hermaphroditism were also investigated. The male/female ratio in P. lamarckii was approximately equal, but in P. triqueter it deviated significantly in favour of females. There was no significant variation in the sex ratios throughout the year in either species. Results confirm that the species are protandric hermaphrodites. In P. lamarckii, but not in P. triqueter, sexual dimorphism was exhibited in body size, the females being larger than the males of the same species. In both species, the proportion of females increased with increasing body size. Simultaneous hermaphroditism was recorded in P. lamarckii, but not in P. triqueter. There was no clearly defined annual gametogenic cycle in either species. Both species appear to have an extended reproductive season, with numerous small-scale peaks in reproductive maturity that can vary annually. Spawning was broadly synchronous between sexes. Visual observation alone (i.e. without histology) was insufficient to accurately assess reproductive condition in individuals not in, or close to, a ripe state.  相似文献

The annual cycle of abundance and distribution of the scyphozoan medusae Aurelia aurita, Cyanea lamarckii, C. capillata and Chrysaora hysoscella were studied in the southern North Sea in 2004 and 2005. Three different patterns of seasonal occurrence of medusae were distinguished: (1) the early occurring C. lamarckii (February–August), (2) C. capillata and A. aurita (April–August) and (3) the late appearing C. hysoscella (July/August–September). Cyanea lamarckii was the most frequently encountered species in this study; its highest mean abundance was 1.8 ± 2.7 ind. 100 m−3. The prey spectra of C. lamarckii, C. capillata and C. hysoscella contained several copepod and other crustacean species and thus make them potential competitors with fish larvae. Medusae in this study also consumed fish eggs and larvae, including clupeids, in all months analysed. Although peak spawning of sprat (Sprattus sprattus) coincides with the maximum abundance of medusae (May–June) the relative low abundance of all medusae species in this study makes jellyfish predation unlikely to be a factor controlling sprat recruitment in the time frame investigated.  相似文献

Genetic variability of the phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) and phosphoglucomutase (PGM) loci are compared in Patella vulgata L. and P. aspera Lamark from two sites on the west and south coasts of Ireland. P. vulgata was less variable than P. aspera at these 2 loci, and in only 1 of 7 other loci briefly examined was P. vulgata more variable. Evidence is also presented that the PGI enzyme in P. vulgata is more stable at high temperature than that of P aspera. The significance of these observations is discussed in the light of, the different zonal distributions of these species on the shore.  相似文献

Penaeid shrimps comprise an important portion of the world's industrial fisheries and mariculture. In the Southwest Atlantic, Penaeus (Farfantepenaeus) subtilis, P. (F.) paulensis, P. (F.) brasiliensis and P. (Litopenaeus) schmitti are the most important commercially exploited species. Despite their high commercial value, there is little information available on the different aspects of their biology or genetics and almost no data on stock structure. Also, the taxonomic status of P. subtilis populations in relation to P. paulensis and their geographic ranges have been recently questioned. In this paper we used both nuclear (allozymes) and mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase subunit 1) data to compare species of south-western Atlantic penaeids and to estimate their phylogenetic relationships. We could readily discriminate among the four main Brazilian penaeid species and detected a fifth, new, species of Penaeus. This new species corresponded to one of the described morphotypes of P. subtilis. Based on these analyses, the geographic ranges of P. subtilis and P. paulensis were clarified. Our data also support the conclusion of Baldwin et al. (1998) that the subgenus Farfantepenaeus is polyphyletic. Received: 6 January 2000 / Accepted: 13 June 2000  相似文献

Juvenile red sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, aggregate under adult conspecifics, whereas sympatric juvenile green sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, are typically more solitary and dispersed. Neither the potential advantage of juvenile sheltering nor the differences in post-settlement behavior between the two species has been demonstrated experimentally, but may be related to protection from predators and/or hydrodynamics. In predation experiments, juvenile vulnerability differed in the two species as the seastar Pycnopodia helianthoides consistently chose juvenile S. franciscanus over S. droebachiensis (100% vs. 0%). When associated with adults, juvenile mortality decreased dramatically in S. franciscanus (90% alone vs. 5% with adults), but very little in S. droebachiensis (85% vs. 75%). Not surprisingly, juvenile behavioral responses in the two species reflect this difference in vulnerability. Juvenile S. franciscanus sheltered under adults when predation risk was high, but not when risk was low (44% vs. 13%), whereas sheltering in S. droebachiensis was infrequent and not related to predation risk (7% for high risk versus 5% for low risk). From a hydrodynamic perspective, the presence of an adult led to the creation of a hydrodynamic refuge for juveniles, where average water velocities were reduced by > 60% around the adult urchin. Again, striking differences in sheltering rate were apparent in S. franciscanus (52% vs. 13% for high flow and low flow, respectively), but not S. droebachiensis (5% for high flow versus 4% for low flow). Sheltering behavior was also species-specific as juveniles did not shelter at high rates under adults of the opposite species (≤ 16%). A field survey confirmed these finding in that juvenile S. franciscanus abundance was associated with both adults and water motion (R 2 = 0.80, P = 0.008, best-subsets regression). These results suggest that sheltering confers juvenile S. franciscanus with a degree of protection from predators and water motion, and that species-specific differences in this post-settlement behavior may be related to the differences in the protection afforded by adults.  相似文献

Eurythoe complanata (Pallas 1766) has been considered a cosmopolitan species with a great morphological similarity across its geographic range. To elucidate whether E. complanata is actually a single species, genetic (cytochrome oxidase subunit I and allozymes) and morphological differences were compared among specimens from the Pacific, Caribbean, and South Atlantic Oceans. Large levels of COI divergence (10–22%) and diagnostic allozyme loci identified three cryptic species: one in the eastern Pacific and two in the Atlantic, with one being morphologically differentiated and found only in islands. COI sequences between Pacific and Atlantic lineages were much more divergent than those of other transisthmian invertebrates, indicating their split before the Panama Isthmus closure or a faster evolutionary rate of COI for this species. The existence of two Atlantic species may be a consequence of parapatric speciation followed by a secondary invasion or even a sympatric speciation in the Atlantic oceanic islands.  相似文献

It has been proposed that the common West Coast limpet, Lottia digitalis, is actually the northern counterpart of a cryptic species duo including, Lottia austrodigitalis. Allele frequency differences between southern and northern populations at two polymorphic enzyme loci provided the basis for this claim. Due to lack of further evidence, L. austrodigitalis is still largely unrecognized in the literature. Seven additional enzyme loci were examined from populations in proposed zones of allopatry and sympatry to determine the existence of L. austrodigitalis as a sibling species to L. digitalis. Significant allele frequency differences were found at five enzyme loci between populations in Laguna Beach, southern California, and Bodega Bay, northern California; strongly supporting the existence of separate species. Both species exhibit two microhabitat morphotypes, a gooseneck barnacle morph in the mid-intertidal zone and a rock morph in the high-intertidal zone. In sympatry, L. austrodigitalis was more abundant higher in the intertidal on rocks, whereas L. digitalis was more abundant lower in the intertidal on barnacles. This finding supports earlier claims of microhabitat partitioning in this sibling species pair. In addition to this finding, the transition zone between the species was found to have shifted substantially northward in only two decades, from Monterey Peninsula, CA to near Pigeon Point, CA, where L. digitalis previously dominated.  相似文献

Larval ascaridoid nematodes were surveyed in three flatfish species, Hippoglossoides platessoides, Pleuronectes ferrugineus, and P. americanus, from Sable Island Bank in February and June 1989. Pseudoterranova decipiens (sealworm) abundances differed significantly with both host species, the heaviest levels being found in H. platessoides, and host length, infections generally increasing with length, but not between February and June samples. Moderate numbers of larvae were found in P. ferrugineus while P. americanus were seldom infected. Two third-stage P. decipiens larvae (L3), 3.2 and 7.0 mm in length, were recovered from the cephalothoraxes of two Mysis mixta in H. platessoides stomachs while five L3's (2.8 to 8.7 mm in length) were found among food (polychaetes, cumaceans, tanaids, amphipods) in the stomach of a P. ferrugineus. Levels of P. decipiens infection appear to be directly related to consumption of suprabenthic prey, which commonly occur in the diet of H. platessoides but are exploited less frequently by P. ferrugineus and rarely by P. americanus.  相似文献

Multilocus allozyme heterozygosity (MLH) has been positively correlated with growth in some marine bivalves and was suggested to facilitate swimming activity in pectinids. Using two highly mobile scallops, Placopecten magellanicus and Argopecten purpuratus, we examined escape response performance and morphometric characteristics as a function of allelic variability at metabolic loci. Ten allozyme systems were used for A. purpuratus and 7 for P. magellanicus. In each species, the morphometric characteristics and escape response parameters were analyzed separately using principal components analysis (PCA) and the scores of the major principal components were related to allozyme heterozygosity. In both P. magellanicus and A. purpuratus, positive correlations were found between MLH and morphometric parameters, but escape response parameters were only positively linked to MLH in P. magellanicus, and then weakly. The hypothesis that MLH improves fitness of pectinids by increasing the capacity to escape predators is not supported.  相似文献

Biodiversity of sharks in the tropical Indo-Pacific is high, but species-specific information to assist sustainable resource exploitation is scarce. The null hypothesis of population genetic homogeneity was tested for scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini, n = 237) and the milk shark (Rhizoprionodon acutus, n = 207) from northern and eastern Australia, using nuclear (S. lewini, eight microsatellite loci; R. acutus, six loci) and mitochondrial gene markers (873 base pairs of NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4). We were unable to reject genetic homogeneity for S. lewini, which was as expected based on previous studies of this species. Less expected were similar results for R. acutus, which is more benthic and less vagile than S. lewini. These features are probably driving the genetic break found between Australian and central Indonesian R. acutus (F-statistics; mtDNA, 0.751–0.903, respectively; microsatellite loci, 0.038–0.047 respectively). Our results support the spatially homogeneous monitoring and management plan for shark species in Queensland, Australia.  相似文献

We describe three highly polymorphic microsatellite loci which have been isolated from the giant tiger prawn Penaeus monodon. The number of alleles present among 312 samples at the loci Pmo9, Pmo25 and Pmo27 were 84, 34 and 35, respectively, with heterozygosities all >90%. Analyses of the distribution of length variation at three microsatellite loci among five Australian P. monodon populations revealed strong differentiation between populations from the west and those from the northern and eastern coasts. Tests for population differentiation (F st) values and an analogous measure for microsatellite loci (R st) all demonstrated that Western Australian P. monodon are a separate genetic stock which exhibits reduced genetic variation relative to the other populations. Reduced variability is consistent with a recent population bottleneck or colonization by a small founding population from the east when sea links between Indonesia, New Guinea and Australia were re-established following the last ice age. The results of this study are in agreement with previous surveys of P. monodon conducted with allozymes and mtDNA. Received: 18 December 1998 / Accepted: 27 August 1999  相似文献

A combination of a direct and an indirect method has been used for the first time in the study of filter-feeding in benthic invertebrates. Experiments over 12 h periods under constant temperature, pH, light and feeding conditions have been carried out with 3 species of ascidians: Ciona intestinalis (Linné, 1767); Phallusia mammillata (Cuvier, 1815) and Styela plicata (Lesueur, 1823). In C. intestinalis and P. mammillata, no pumping rhythm has been found; the water flow was constant for 12 h, except for some brief accidental interruptions. In S. plicata, the particular rhythm of spontaneous periodical contractions recorded during the experiment were related to gamete emission. The speed of water flow, which was fairly constant during recording, varied considerably during the 12 h period; these variations were generally related to modifications in the diameter of the cloacal siphon. The average speeds, in cm sec-1, lay between 5.7 and 9.5 for C. intestinalis, 5.2 and 19.4 for P. mammillata, and between 5.3 and 10.7 for S. plicata. Variations in the pumping-rate were small, oscillating around a mean value. In ml h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs these were 5,829 to 5,982 (mean=5,906) for C. intestinalis, 6,142 to 6,592 (mean=6,312) for P. mammillata, 1,0508 to 1,1505 (mean=1,0708) for S. plicata. Filtration was continuous without any particular rhythm; filtration rates in ml h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs varied between 4,244 and 4,418 (mean=4,331) for C. intestinalis, 4,620 and 4,960 (mean=4,779) for P. mammillata, 8,482 and 9,078 (mean=8,760) for S. plicata. The curves representing pumping and filtration were clearly parallel, indicating that filtration efficiency did not vary greatly during the course of an experiment; the rates obtained were 65 to 87% (mean=74%) for C. intestinalis, 66 to 88% (mean 76%) for P. mammillata, and 73 to 90% (mean=80%) for S. plicata. The slightly higher mean value in S. plicata is probably related to the higher complexity of the branchial apparatus of this species.  相似文献

Combining chemical analysis and odour preference tests, we asked whether two closely related sympatric species of sac-winged bats use odour for species recognition. Males of the two sister species Saccopteryx bilineata and Saccopteryx leptura have pouches containing an odoriferous liquid in their antebrachial wing membrane, which is used in S. bilineata during courtship displays. Although both species occasionally share the same daytime roosts and are morphologically similar, there is no evidence for interbreeding. We compared the production and composition of the wing sac odorant in male S. leptura and S. bilineata and performed odour preference tests with female S. bilineata. Similar to male S. bilineata, male S. leptura cleansed and refilled their wing sacs with secretions, but they spent more time each day in doing so than male S. bilineata. Chemical analysis by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry revealed that male Saccopteryx carried species-specific scents in their wing sacs. Binary choice tests confirmed that female S. bilineata preferred the wing sac scents of male S. bilineata to those of the sister species, suggesting that the species specificity of male wing sac scents maintain the pre-mating isolation barrier between these closely related species.  相似文献

The Almería-Oran Oceanographic Front (AOOF) has been proposed as an effective marine barrier to gene flow between the NE Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea for several species. Previous studies using allozymes and mitochondrial DNA have reported a scenario of secondary intergradation between populations of Mytilus galloprovincialis from those basins, with the allelic frequencies of some loci showing abrupt clinal patterns across the AOOF. In this study, we aimed at testing the congruence between six neutral polymorphic microsatellites versus previous data on allozymes and mtDNA-RFLPs, at depicting the population structure of this species in the Iberian Peninsula. Microsatellite genotyping was scored on 17 samples of mussels collected in the Iberian coast, including some areas not sampled before. Microsatellites exhibited larger intrabasin diversity (F SC = 1.72%, ), similar interbasin differentiation (F CT = 2.81%) and fewer allelic clines than allozymes or mtDNA haplotypes. These results fully support the scenario of secondary intergradation with some ongoing gene flow between basins, as proposed in previous analyses. Moreover, this congruence between markers and analyses separated by a 12-year period (1988–2000) confirm the temporal stability of this marine barrier at shaping the Iberian phylogeographic break in M. galloprovincialis. In addition, the genetic continuity between the NE Atlantic (Portugal) and the Alboran Sea seems to be warranted across the Gulf of Cadiz and the Gibraltar strait after the present microsatellite data. Sympatric sea urchin species are usually considered to belong to the same grazer guild. Nevertheless, their role in community dynamics may vary due to species-specific morphological traits, feeding preferences and foraging behavior. In the Mediterranean Sea, the two species Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula co-occur in barren areas. Whereas P. lividus is usually considered responsible for creating a barren ground, the roles of the two sea urchin species in its maintenance are currently unclear. The relative and combined effects of P. lividus and A. lixula on maintaining the benthic community in the barren state were tested experimentally, using orthogonal exclusion of the two species. Results show that exclusion of A. lixula, regardless of the presence of P. lividus, led to a significant decrease in the surface of bare rock and a significant change of the algal assemblages, thus demonstrating the major role of this species in maintaining the barren state.  相似文献

Patella caerulea L., P. aspera Lam. (=P. ulyssiponensis Gmelin). P. rustica L. (=P. lusitanica Gmelin) are coexisting Mediterranean species of the genus Patella. P. caerulea and P. rustica have a haploid complement of n=9 with seven metacentric and two telocentric chromosomes, while P. aspera has a haploid complement of n=8 without telocentric chromosomes. To better define the phylogenetic relationships among these three species, an electrophoretic analysis of 12 enzyme coding loci was performed on samples of the three species collected from Laigueglia (Liguria, Italy) in 1989. On the whole, genotypic frequencies were in agreement with Hardy-Weinberg expectations and no significant differences were observed among the populations of the three species as far as their genetic structure is concerned. Nearly 50% of the sampled loci were diagnostic. Nei's genetic distance was 0.82 between P. caerulea and P. aspera, 0.97 between P. aspera and P. rustica and 0.94 between P. caerulea and P. rustica. By greatly separating P. rustica from the other two species, results of the electrophoretic analysis are consistent with the traditional view, which regards P. aspera and P. caerulea as more closely related than P. rustica on the basis of radular teeth morphology. Using genetic distances and the assumptions of the molecular clock, lineages leading to P. aspera and to P. caerulea may have diverged from the stem common to P. rustica ca. 18 million years ago.  相似文献

The sibling species, Pseudocalanus moultoni (Frost, 1989) and P. newmani (Frost, 1989), occur sympatrically on Georges Bank. Taxonomic discrimination of the species relies on subtle morphological characteristics, making routine identification of the species very difficult. DNA sequence variation of two mitochondrial genes, 16S rRNA and cytochrome oxidase I (COI), reliably discriminated P. moultoni and P.␣newmani. Levels of DNA sequence variation for both genes were consistent with those between species of calanoid copepods. A molecular systematic protocol (based on allele-specific PCR amplification) was designed from the COI sequences and used to discriminate females of the two species. The distributions and relative abundances of the two species were mapped for April 1996 based on samples of 15 to 30 females from 12 collections across Georges Bank. The results of this study indicated that P. moultoni females predominated along the northern flank of Georges Bank, while P. newmani females were common on the southern flank, deeper than the 60-m isobath. Abstract: The acquisition or designation of new protected areas is usually based on criteria for representation of different ecosystems or land‐cover classes, and it is unclear how wellthreatened species are conserved within protected‐area networks. Here, we assessed how Australia's terrestrial protected‐area system (89 million ha, 11.6% of the continent) overlaps with the geographic distributions of threatened species and compared this overlap against a model that randomly placed protected areas across the continent and a spatially efficient model that placed protected areas across the continent to maximize threatened species’ representation within the protected‐area estate. We defined the minimum area needed to conserve each species on the basis of the species’ range size. We found that although the current configuration of protected areas met targets for representation of a given percentage of species’ ranges better than a random selection of areas, 166 (12.6%) threatened species occurred entirely outside protected areas and target levels of protection were met for only 259 (19.6%) species. Critically endangered species were among those with the least protection; 12 (21.1%) species occurred entirely outside protected areas. Reptiles and plants were the most poorly represented taxonomic groups, and amphibians the best represented. Spatial prioritization analyses revealed that an efficient protected‐area system of the same size as the current protected‐area system (11.6% of the area of Australia) could meet representation targets for 1272 (93.3%) threatened species. Moreover, the results of these prioritization analyses showed that by protecting 17.8% of Australia, all threatened species could reach target levels of representation, assuming all current protected areas are retained. Although this amount of area theoretically could be protected, existing land uses and the finite resources available for conservation mean land acquisition may not be possible or even effective for the recovery of threatened species. The optimal use of resources must balance acquisition of new protected areas, where processes that threaten native species are mitigated by the change in ownership or on‐ground management jurisdiction, and management of threatened species inside and outside the existing protected‐area system.  相似文献

We examined the genetic identities of 49 individuals of four species of eels in the genus Anguilla Shaw, A. anguilla, A. japonica, A. reinhardti and A. rostrata, using the random(ly) amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR technique. We used 15 random decamer primers. Out of the 22 148 amplification products detected, 454 markers were evaluated using Nei's distance coefficient, two numerical methods (neighbor-joining, UPGMA), and phylogenetic analysis using parsimony (PAUP). Both numerical and parsimony methods were congruent and confirmed the specific status of all four examined Anguilla species. In all dendrograms, all individuals of each of the species clustered together within four closed groups with highly significant bootstrap values (between 97 and 100%). Additionally 1 to 18 species-specific monomorphic diagnostic fragments were detected in three of the species; none were detected in A. anguilla. Mean interspecific genetic distances ranged from 0.384 to 0.559, with the minimum between A. anguilla and A. rostrata and the maximum between A. anguilla and A. reinhardti. Individuals collected at one locality and belonging to a single species did not cluster together, and neither were any diagnostic monomorphic fragments found for individuals of single localities. This probably reflects a random dispersal of larvae in ocean currents before they reach coastal waters. Among all possible species pairs, only the two Atlantic species were consistently clustered in all dendrograms, with highly significant bootstrap values (100%). Additionally, we detected ten diagnostic markers for this pair of eel species. From RAPD data, we suggest a phylogram which was routed by the descending analysis method: A. reinhardti appears to have been the first species to diverge from a putative common ancestor of the four eel species. Later, A. japonica separated from the hypothetical ancestor of the Atlantic species, which then split recently into A. anguilla and A. rostrata. The close relationship of A. anguilla and A. rostrata is indicated by their low genetic distance (GD = 0.384) and a high degree of shared RAPD fragments (SF = 71.2%); this compares with the following means for all other species pairs: ( = 0.531,  = 44.2%). The prerequisites for using RAPD data for the reconstruction of phylogenies are discussed. Received: 2 September 1999 / Accepted: 8 May 2000  相似文献

The genetic structure of the flounders Platichthys flesus L. and P. stellatus Pallas was investigated on different spatial scales through analysis of allozyme variation at 7 to 24 polymorphic loci in samples collected from different regions (Baltic Sea, North Sea, Brittany, Portugal, western Mediterranean, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea and Japan) in 1984 to 1987. No geographic variation was evident within a region. Some pattern of differentiation by distance was inferred within the Atlantic, while the Mediterranean comprised three geographically isolated populations and was itself geographically isolated from the Atlantic (fixed allele differences at up to three loci were found among P. flesus populations from the Atlantic, the western Mediterranean, the Adriatic Sea, the Aegean Sea and also P. stellatus from the coast of Japan). Sea temperature during the reproductive period probably acts as a barrier to gene flow between populations. Genetic distances among European flounder populations (P. flesus) were higher than, or of the same magnitude as, the genetic distance between Pacific (P. stellatus) and European flounder populations, suggesting that P. flesus is paraphyletic and/or there is no phylogenetic basis to recognising P. stellatus as a different species. The divergence between P. flesus and P. stellatus was thus inferred to be more recent than the divergence between the present P. flesus populations from the NE Atlantic and eastern Mediterranean. The eastern Mediterranean populations are thought to originate from the colonisation of the Mediterranean by a proto-P. flesus/P. stellatus ancestor, whereas the present western Mediterranean population has undergone a more recent colonisation event by P. flesus. Patterns of mitochondrial DNA variation, established on a smaller array of P. flesus samples, were in accordance with the geographic patterns inferred from the allozyme survey. In addition, they supported the hypothesis of a two-step colonisation of the western Mediterranean. These results contribute to our understanding of the biogeography of the Mediterranean marine fauna, especially the group of boreal remnants to which P. flesus belongs.
