Based on 18 epibenthic sled samples, the species composition and relative abundance of the gammarid amphipod assemblages in the San Diego Trough and Tanner Basin were found to be very different, despite their similar depths (1, 250 m) and relative proximity. Differences in sedimentary regime and food sources seem the most likely vauses of the observed faunal differences.  相似文献

Using data from 6 cruises from May to October 1972, we have compared the efficiency and selectivity of a double-scoop Holme bottom sampler, a Spatangue anchor dredge, a Hessler-Sanders epibenthic sled and a Macer-GIROQ suprabenthic sled, at comparable time intervals, on muddy sand at a depth of 18 to 26 m and on silty clay at 329 to 355 m in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada. Estimates of density and species proportions of most taxa except polychaetes allow an assessment of the stratification of autecological forms at the bottom-water interface. Estimates of species percentages are similar for the Holme sampler and the dredge, but only the former yields reliable density estimates. The dredge underdigs and overestimates density on harder ground, and overdigs and underestimates it on soft mud. Both types of estimates are comparable among suprabenthic samples not contaminated with mud, and the fauna therein (Crustacea account for 97% of individuals and 79% of species, excluding copepods) at both stations is markedly different from that of other sample types. Epibenthic and contaminated suprabenthic samples yield estimates somewhat transitional between those of endobenthic and non-contaminated suprabenthic samples. The Hessler-Sanders sled behaves somewhat like a dredge, depending on substrate firmness, and many mobile Crustacea can apparently evade it. No instrument adequately samples the 28 cm layer closest to the bottom.

The talitrid amphipod Uhlorchestia spartinophila Bousfield and Heard occurs in close association with the smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora Loisel in salt marshes along the U.S. Atlantic coast. In order to assess its potential as a prey resource for secondary consumers, we followed the population and production dynamics of this amphipod from 3 November 1990 to 2 October 1991 in a salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Semimonthly samples were taken along an intertidal transect, which extended from a vegetated creekbank levee landward 140 m to a site near the upland edge of the marsh. Amphipod densities ranged from 9 to 826 indm-2 and were greatest in the levee and high marsh habitats at opposite ends of the transect. The highest densities occurred in March to May and the lowest in November and December. Specific growth rates, which ranged from 0.001 to 0.024 mm mm-1 d-1 length and 0.003 to 0.068 mg mg-1 d-1 AFDW (ash-free dry weight), were least in winter and decreased with increasing amphipod size. Although some reproduction occurred year-round, most of the population's reproductive output was from January to May, when adults had the greatest size-specific mass. Sex ratio usually favored females, which were larger than males. Minimum adult female size was 5.4 mm total length (TL). Broods included from 1 to 28 eggs or young and increased with increasing body size, averaging 7.4 young for an average-size female of 7.6 mm TL. Annual production, which ranged from 0.769 to 1.444 g AFDW m-2, was least in the low marsh and greatest in the levee habitat. Production:biomass ratios were 15.4 to 17.3 in different habitats. Such high turnover rates, together with the population's broad intertidal distribution, suggest a greater contribution to trophic dynamics than is implied by the relatively low standing stock biomass of U. spartinophila in this marsh system.  相似文献

The importance of oyster-shell habitat-characteristics (depth of the shell layer or degree of fragmentation) to the amphipodEogammarus oclairi were studied in Grays Harbor estuary (Washington, USA) in regard to their effect on local density ofE. oclairi, the risk of predation by juvenile Dungeness crabsCancer magister, and the opportunity for selection on body weight during pairing.E. oclairi was the most abundant macrofaunal species in the intertidal oyster-shell assemblages (density range = 20 to 8500 amphipods m–2), and its density was positively correlated with the depth of the oyster-shell layer (r = 0.85,n = 30,p < 0.005). Field experiments showed that amphipod density was much lower when oyster shells were whole (x = 340.7 ± 72.1,n = 10) as opposed to fragmented [x = 41.4 ± 9.3,n = 10;t c (Welch's approximatet-test) = 13.0,df = 9.3,p < 0.05]. Densities of a predator, juvenileC. magister, were not affected by depth of the shell layer nor by degree of fragmentation (whole shell,x = 14.6 ± 13.0 crab;fragmented shell,x = 18.7 ± 2.4 crab;t c = 0.83,df = 9.7,p > 0.05). Predation rate on single amphipods by crabs did not differ between habitat types (whole shells vs fragmented shells), but mating pairs were consumed more often in the whole-shell treatment (whole shell,x = 0.9 ± 0.8, fragmented shell,x = 0.1 ± 0.3). There were no differences in the size of single amphipods (both sexes) consumed between treatments, or in the size of the paired males consumed. Field experiments showed that the opportunity for selection (i) on male body weight increased with increasing amphipod density which, in turn, increased with increasing degree of shell fragmentation (whole-shell treatment,i = 0.0014 ± 0.0002, fragmented-shell treatment,i = 0.3756 ± 0.0338). Large spatial and temporal fluctuations in population abundance complicate the evaluation of the importance of selection in determining traits such as body weight.  相似文献

Distribution of 118 species of Amphipoda, Mysidacea and Decapoda, sampled in 1984 and 1985 with an epibenthic sledge along a transect from the Skagerrak to the inner Gullmarfjord (Sweden), is described. Amphipods were richest in species in the Skagerrak, while most mysid species were taken at the sill. Deca-impoverished and the Lilljeborgidae, earlier represented by three species, had disappeared since the 1930s. The changes are most likely caused by eutrophication of the fjord. and deep-basin samples; (III) sill samples; (IV) Skagerrak samples. Characteristic species of the groups were identified with a pseudoF-test. Detrended Correspondence Analysis indicated seasonal faunal changes at 42 and 72 m depths. At both depths a shift in numerical dominance from amphipods to mysids was found in winter. The most pronounced changes seemed to occur at 42 m. Changes in composition and abundance of species during a renewal of the bottom water indicated that mysids were influenced by presumed near-bottom currents, while amphipods and decapods were not. Comparison of the present amphipod fauna with the fauna in 1933–37 revealed significant differences. The fauna in the deep basin was impoverished and the Lilljeborgidae, earlier represented by three species, had disappeared since the 1930s. The changes are most likely caused by eutrophication of the fjord.  相似文献

A nine-year study at a moderately exposed, fine sand intertidal beach at Long Sands, Maine, USA identified marked seasonal changes in the foci of sand-burrowing amphipod activities. These included seasonal population movements, degree of interspecific horizontal overlap, life stage segregation within and between species, and sand depth stratification. Behavioral interactions related to competition for available space are considered important in affecting the distribution and abundance of amphipod species, and community structure. Significant negative correlations were shown between the abundance and upper distributional limits of the smaller, lower shore Acanthohaustorius millsi and the abundance of the larger, higher shore species Haustorius canadensis. Tolerance limits to a variety of prevailing physical factors alone, were not considered a serious obstacle to occupation of higher intertidal level sands by A. millsi. Summer brooding females of both species occupied similar 5 to 10 cm sand depths, but were strongly segregated horizontally. Laboratory coexistence experiments during the reproductive period showed increased mortality of adults and negligible reproductive output of A. millsi when in combination with H. canadensis compared to controls where the former species was alone. A third species, Amphiporeia virginiana, occupied primarily very shallow sand (0 to 2.5 cm), and performed seasonal movements opposite in direction to A. millsi and H. canadensis. The presence, amount, and refinement of biological interactions across the wave exposure gradient requires further study. Until then, we consider as inappropriate the blanket designation of all types of intertidal sand communities as physically controlled.

Decapods did not display any clear pattern. Twinspan, a multivariate data analysis program, divided the samples into four groups: (I) deep-fjord samples; (II) sill, shallow-fjord and deep-basin samples; (III) sill samples; (IV) Skagerrak samples. Characteristic species of the groups were identified with a pseudoF-test. Detrended Correspondence Analysis indicated seasonal faunal changes at 42 and 72 m depths. Seasonal and diel variations in community structure and abundance of coral-reef lagoon mysids were examined at Davies Reef in the central region of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) between June 1980 and May 1981. Twenty-five mysid species belonging to three subfamilies of the family Mysidae were captured during the study, with six new records for the GBR. The epibenthic mysid community differed from that in the overlying water, was faunistically uniform, but formed characteristic seasonal and diel groupings. The dominant epibenthic species were Erythrops sp., Anisomysis pelewensis, Doxomysis littoralis, A. laticauda, Prionomysis stenolepis, A. lamellicauda, and A. australis, five of which formed schools. Total mysid abundances ranged between 110 and 790 m-3 with peak abundance in October. Schooling species occurred at local densities of up to 500 000 m-3. Mysids were absent from shallow and midwater depths during the day, but were distributed throughout all depths at night with peak abundances in mid-water and deep layers. The dominant species in the water column at night were Pseudanchialina inermis, A. laticauda and Gastrosaccus indicus, in descending order of abundance. Lagoonal mysids contribute little to the food of sessile reef planktivores, as all but three species remain concentrated near or on the lagoon floor both day and night. The contribution of resident lagoon mysids to reef trophodynamics is probably through remineralization of lagoon detritus. Given the vast reef areas comprised of sandy lagoons, the large populations and relatively large size of lagoon mysids, this trophodynamic role may be of considerable importance.A.I.M.S. The hypothesis was tested that predation-disturbance by epibenthic macrofauna affects the abundance of sediment-dwelling harpacticoid copepods. The copepods inhabited a subtidal seagrass (Zostera marina L.) bed in British Columbia, Canada. The response of the harpacticoid community was observed in controlled field experiments in which epibenthic predators-disturbers were excluded from portions of the seagrass bed. Controlled, exclusion-cage (0.8 m2 area, 7-mm mesh) experiments were conducted within the seagrass bed from late March/early April to mid-June in both 1986 and 1987. Sampling was conducted biweekly. Exclusion of large epibenthic predators-disturbers had little effect on sediment-dwelling harpacticoid copepod density. Total harpacticoid numbers and abundances of dominant species generally did not increase in the exclusion treatment relative to the control. Shifts in species composition of the harpacticoid community did not occur. The treatment control was adequate in simulating the exclusion cage structure. It appears that large epibenthic predators-disturbers have little impact on the abundance of harpacticoid copepod populations at this study site.  相似文献

Temperature variability is particularly pronounced in intertidal systems. The importance of considering this variability has been increasingly recognised, especially in the context of climate change and disease dynamics. Here, we investigated the effects of temperature variability on the transmission of the intertidal trematode Maritrema novaezealandensis. The experimental treatments were 15 °C (control), 15 + 5 °C daily, 15 + 10 °C every second day, 15 + 15 °C every third day (overall equal thermal loading), and a heat wave treatment (15 + 10 °C daily). Daily 6 h incubations were carried out corresponding to daytime low tides over a 12-day period. Effects on output of transmission stages (cercariae) from infected Zeacumantus subcarinatus snail hosts and transmission success of cercariae to Paracalliope novizealandiae amphipod hosts were quantified, as well as the survival of amphipods. Results showed differential effects on output and transmission success. The number of cercariae emerging was similar for treatments with equal thermal loading, but was substantially increased in the heat wave treatment. Transmission success was highest and comparable for the treatments with regular daily temperature increases (i.e. 15 + 5 °C and heat wave), compared to other treatments. Amphipod survival was not affected by temperature treatment directly, but by the number of parasites infecting an amphipod, as well as amphipod sex. These results demonstrate that cercarial output depends mostly on total thermal loading, whereas successful infection of amphipods is determined by total time above 15 °C. Repeated exposure to ~25 °C, as expected under a heat wave scenario, therefore increases both transmission pressure and success, and hence, the risk of parasite-induced mortality in amphipods.  相似文献

Food web structure, particularly the relative importance of bottom-up and top-down control of animal abundances, is poorly known for the Earth's largest habitats: the abyssal plains. A unique 15-yr time series of climate, productivity, particulate flux, and abundance of primary consumers (primarily echinoderms) and secondary consumers (fish) was examined to elucidate the response of trophic levels to temporal variation in one another. Towed camera sled deployments in the abyssal northeast Pacific (4100 m water depth) showed that annual mean numbers of the dominant fish genus (Coryphaenoides spp.) more than doubled over the period 1989-2004. Coryphaenoides spp. abundance was significantly correlated with total abundance of mobile epibenthic megafauna (echinoderms), with changes in fish abundance lagging behind changes in the echinoderms. Direct correlations between surface climate and fish abundances, and particulate organic carbon (POC) flux and fish abundances, were insignificant, which may be related to the varied response of the potential prey taxa to climate and POC flux. This study provides a rare opportunity to study the long-term dynamics of an unexploited marine fish population and suggests a dominant role for bottom-up control in this system.  相似文献

At the compacted, north-south line of the ice edge, phytoplankton were sampled during early austral autumn of 1986 in the northwestern Weddell Sea. Cells from discrete water bottle samples from 12 stations on two east-west transects were counted to gain quantitative information on the composition, abundance, distribution, and condition of the phytoplankton in water-column assemblages. Over 70 species were found. The highest numbers of total cells (integrated through the top 150 m) were found in open water, well-separated from and to the east of the ice edge on the southern transect, with 6.01×1010 cells m-2. The relative abundance of diatoms was low at ice-convered stations (< 35% of the total phytoplankton in preserved samples) and high at open-water stations (> 80%); however, the relative abundance of the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis sp. was high at ice-covered stations (> 60%) and low at open-water stations (< 16%), with lower absolute abundances than during a previous austral-spring phytoplankton increase. In the open ocean, the dominants were the pennate diatoms Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Pseudonitzschia prolongatoides, F. curta, and a small form of the centric diatom Chaetoceros dichaeta in chains. Although the three pennate diatoms were frequently dominant in number, they represented less biomass than C. dichaeta in open waters. Mean phytoplankton abundance was low (0.2×106 cells l-1) but, overall, the diatom cell density (0.14×106 cells l-1) was similar to that found previously during a northward transect from ice-covered to ice-free water at the Weddell-Scotia Sea ice edge (spring 1983). The phytoplankton spatial patterns in the two autumn transects differed, with the more southerly transect exhibiting a higher abundance of diatoms and dinoflagellates. The ratio of full to empty diatoms was higher on the southern transect, indicating a healthy population, while lower ratios of full/empty frustules on the northern transect suggested a generally declining population. However, Phaeocystis sp. was more abundant on the northern transect.  相似文献

Amphipods along the western Antarctic Peninsula appear to gain refuge from predators by associating with chemically defended macroalgae rather than palatable macroalgae. However, nothing is known about amphipod activity at night. If foraging on non-chemically defended macroalgae regularly occurs, then nocturnal foraging seems beneficial since visual predators are disadvantaged. To test this hypothesis, we collected three common macroalgal species and affiliated mesograzers, approximately 3 h before and after sunset. All associated mesofauna were counted and densities recorded. Amphipod densities were significantly decreased during the night on the chemically defended Desmarestia menziesii, while significantly increased on the palatable Iridaea cordata. Additionally, the amphipod Gondogeneia antarctica was found in significantly higher densities at night on Palmaria decipiens, a species shown to be readily eaten by G. antarctica and omnivorous fish. We believe that chemically defended macroalgae act as a refuge for mesograzers during the day, while more widespread foraging occurs at night.  相似文献

Field manipulations in a Maine, USA intertidal mud flat showed that Nereis virens adults were an important factor in regulating the abundance of Corophium volutator, an amphipod which comprised 63% of the total number of individuals in the benthic community. Removal of N. virens adults resulted in an increase in C. volutator abundance, while addition of N. virens adults led to a decrease. There was a significant negative correlation between the abundance of N. virens adults and that of C. volutator. C. volutator was also negatively correlated with the density of all the other infaunal species combined. These results suggest that there is at least a 3-level interactive system (N. virens —C. volutator — other infaunal species) within the infauna in Maine; N. virens is a factor in controlling the abundance of C. volutator, and C. volutator may play a role in regulating the densities of other infaunal species. Models of generalized cropping in soft-bottom systems may be too simple if they ignore complex trophic relationships within the infauna.  相似文献

The species and distribution of nematodes on the kelp Macrocystic integrifolia Bory, in the Bamfield region of Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada were examined. Nine species (belonging to six families) of nematodes were found on the kelp blades. Three species (Monhystera disjuncta, M. refringens and Prochromadorella neapolitana) comprised 91–99% of the nematode fauna and occurred in all monthly samples from July 1978 to November 1979. The three dominant species exhibited seasonal density differences. P. neapolitana occurred mostly in the summer, M. refringens abundance peaked from July to October and M. disjuncta was relatively abundant throughout the year. The other species contributed little to the overall abundance and distribution patterns. All three species occurred in greatest abundance on the lower and middle blades of M. integrifolia in the deep end of the kelp bed. Very few individuals occurred on the upper blades. Nematode distribution on M. integrifolia appeared to be related to blade age and the associated food sources on the blade.  相似文献

This paper reveals a substantial capacity for herbivory of seaweeds in the gammarid amphipod Aora typica, adults eating seven of ten taxonomically and morphologically diverse seaweed species offered to them in a no-choice assay. The green algae Ulva spathulata and Enteromorpha intestinalis were consumed at the highest rates in both no-choice (2.3–2.5 mg blotted weight individual−1 day−1) and multiple-choice assays (0.5–1.3 mg blotted weight individual−1 day−1). Adult A. typica collected from two different species of brown seaweeds had very similar feeding preferences to each other. Juvenile A. typica grew to reproductive maturity on the green algae E. intestinalis and U. spathulata, and the brown algae Carpophyllum maschalocarpum and Ecklonia radiata. In common with previous studies on members of other amphipod families, survivorship of juvenile amphipods was positively correlated with feeding preferences of adults across seaweed species (r 2=0.43, P=0.04). However, densities of A. typica on seaweeds in the field (excluding the intertidal E. intestinalis and U. spathulata) were not significantly correlated with feeding preferences of adults (r 2=0.07, P=0.5) or survivorship of juveniles (r 2=0.17, P=0.31). This suggests that either host seaweeds are not a major dietary component of these amphipods in nature, or that the host’s value as a food source is overridden by other properties such as the degree of shelter it affords from larger consumers. This study provides the first demonstration that a member of the cosmopolitan amphipod family Aoridae is capable of consuming a diverse range of seaweeds.  相似文献

Total abundance estimates for the large, common, reef fish Cheilodactylus spectabilis (Hutton) were obtained for a marine reserve and adjacent section of coast in north-eastern New Zealand during 1985. Visual strip-transects were used to estimate abundance and size structure in both areas. The accuracy, precision and cost efficiency of five transect sizes (500, 375, 250, 100, 75 m2) were examined over three times per day (dawn, midday and dusk), by simulating transects over mapped C. spectabilis populations. Two transect sizes showed similarly high efficiency. The smaller of the two (20x5 m) was chosen for the survey because of the general advantages attributable to small sampling units. Biases related to strip-transect size are discussed. Preliminary sampling indicated that C. spectabilis was distributed heterogeneously, and that density was habitat-related. An optimal stratified-random design was employed in both locations, to obtain total abundance and size-structure estimates. This reduced the between-habitat source of variability in density. The total number of sampling units used was governed by the time available. The resulting total abundance estimates obtained were 18 338±2 886 (95% confidence limit) for the 5 km marine reserve, compared to 3 987±1 117 for an adjacent, heavily fished 4 km section of coast. When corrected for total area and habitat area sampled, this represented a 2.3-fold difference in abundance. If sampling had been designed to detect an arbitrary 10% difference in abundance within each habitat, an infeasible 440 h of sampling would have been required. Size-frequency distributions of C. spectabilis at the reserve had a larger model size class than distributions from the adjacent area. The data suggest that reserve status is causal in these differing abundance and size structure estimates.  相似文献

We investigated recruitment of the herbivorous gastropodLacuna vincta (Montagu, 1803) in the canopies ofMacrocystis integrifolia andNereocystis luetkeana beds in Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island (British Colombia), from 1987 to 1989. Four factors influencing intensity and patterns of recruitment were studied: (1) seasonality of oviposition, (2) larval abundance, (3) growth of larvae in the field and (4) larval settlement. Egg masses were abundant on low intertidal algae but were scarce in kelp canopies. Although egg masses could be found almost year-round, a distinct and intense period of oviposition occurred during winter and spring. Intracapsular development lasted 2.5 to 3.5 wk before planktotrophic veligers emerged. The duration of the planktonic period, 7 to 9 wk, was determined through an in situ study of cohorts ofLacuna spp. larvae present in the plankton between January and June 1988. The general timing of the onset of the spring peak recruitment period was predicted from these cohorts. Primary periods of recruitment ofL. vincta in the canopy occurred in April–May (average density up to 383.9 juveniles m–2 blades), with a second period of lower intensity in the late summer—fall period. We observed similar trends between abundance of advanced larvae (> 500µm) in the plankton and recruitment rates in kelp canopies. Although adults were occasionally observed in the canopy, newly metamorphosed juveniles consistently dominated the habitat. The persistance of small juveniles (0.7 to 1.5 mm), rapid declines in density shortly after recruitment, and SCUBA observations of drifting individuals suggest that juveniles migrate to the under-canopy or low intertidal area after a brief period of growth on kelp blades.  相似文献

The effect of microalgal strength of adhesion to surfaces was examined with regard to their susceptibility to grazing by Gammarus oceanicus Segerstråle and Calliopius laeviusculus (Krøyer). Observations of the feeding behaviour and two feeding experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions. Naturally attached periphyton (strongly attached cells), homogenized periphyton (loosely attached cells), filtered phytoplankton (unattached cells) and bare surfaces (controls) were randomly located in a grid and offered for grazing to a fixed number of amphipods of each species separately. The number of individuals visiting each type of food presented in the grid was recorded for 24-h periods. The feeding habit of each species, their effect on food distribution and their efficiency at collecting small particles were also recorded. G. oceanicus has a low efficiency at collecting particles and does not select a particular type of food, owing to its feeding habit of indiscriminately resuspending loosely attached particles. C. laeviusculus is a highly efficient and selective grazer, preferring homogenized periphyton and phytoplankton to naturally attached periphyton. For epibenthic diatoms, strong adhesion to surfaces is advantageous to avoid grazers.  相似文献

To calculate the number of samples required to estimate population density to a specified precision, a prior estimate of the sample variance is needed. Using data from the freshwater benthic literature, Downing (1979, 1980a) calculated a regression equation to predict sample variance from sampler size and population density. He used predicted sample variance to calculate the number of samples, of a range of sizes, required to estimate a range of population densities to a specified precision. He concludes that massive savings (1300 to 5000%) of total surface area sampled may be achieved by using sample units of small surface area. These conclusions are misleading. The data set used for the regression does not adequately cover the combination of a low-density population sampled by a device of small surface area. The benthic community of Belhaven Bay, East Lothian, Scotland was sampled in 1982 with a 0.1 m2 grab and a 0.0018 m2 corer, providing 112 sets of replicate data which were used to test the hypothesis that for a specified precision of the mean a considerable saving of total area sampled may be obtained by sampling with a device of small surface area. The benthos of Loch Creran, Argyll, Scotland was sampled with contiguous corer samples on four occasions in 1980 and 1981, providing 234 independent sets of replicate data. Contiguous samples were grouped to form several simulated series of samples of increasing surface area. A sampler of small surface area provided a saving of total area sampled of about 20%. Whether such a small saving is justifiable will depend on the extra field expenses incurred by taking many small samples.  相似文献
