A field investigation by boring was carried out in a landfill site primarily with municipal solid waste incineration residue. From the collected core samples, vertical profiles of homologous content of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs) in the landfill layer were traced and the behavior of PCDDs/PCDFs was examined. In addition, a pilot-scale study was conducted on the PCDDs/PCDFs leached from incineration fly ash and the treated one using large landfill simulation columns (lysimeters) and the leaching behavior of PCDDs/PCDFs was examined. As a result, it was found that the coexistence of dissolved coloring constituents (DCCs), which might be composed of constituents like dissolved humic matters having strong affinity for hydrophobic organic pollutants, could enhance the leachability of PCDDs/PCDFs, thus contributing to the vertical movement and leaching behavior of PCDDs/PCDFs in the landfill layers of the incineration residue. Moreover, it is highly probable that DCCs derive from the unburned carbon in the bottom ash mixed and buried with the fly ash containing a high content of PCDDs/PCDFs.  相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and non-ortho chlorine substituted coplanar polychlorinated biphenyl (Co-PCBs, non-ortho Cl CBs) in river and offshore sediment samples were analyzed isomer-specifically using (13)C-labeled their respective internal standards and a selected ion monitoring method of high resolution gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). These compounds were found in all samples analyzed. The average concentrations of the total PCDDs, PCDFs and Co-PCBs in the 23 sediment samples taken from rivers were 11 000, 1300 and 160 pgg(-1) of dry wt, respectively, those in six offshore sediments were 7600, 980 and 52 pgg(-1), respectively. The concentrations of Co-PCBs were much lower than those of PCDDs and PCDFs in all sediment samples. The magnitude of these concentrations was in the order of lower reach of river > offshore area > upper reach of river. The concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs in the rural river were higher than those in the urban river, whereas the Co-PCB concentration in an urban river was six times higher than that in a rural river. The Co-PCB concentrations in the urban area and industrial area were higher than that in any other area. These findings suggest that the pollution by PCDDs and PCDFs was derived from some kinds of incinerations and herbicides applied in the past and that Co-PCB pollution was caused by PCB preparation used in the past in urban and industrial areas and by municipal waste incineration in urban areas.  相似文献

Dioxins including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and co-planar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs) are highly toxic. Even at environmental pollution levels, they cause hormonal damage in women, and they have been shown to induce immunosuppression and genital function damage in humans. In this study, a new method using isotope dilution was established to detect PCDDs, PCDFs and Co-PCBs in human hair. This method, comprised of washing and cutting of hair, alkaline decomposition, hexane extraction, multilayer silica gel column chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography with a porous graphite carbon column and analysis by high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry, enabled us to analyze PCDDs, PCDFs and Co-PCBs at trace levels of less than pg/g with good reproducibility. In addition, there was a correlation between some isomers in human hair and blood collected from identical donors. Human hair analysis is useful to evaluate human risk assessment including that due to environmental pollution.  相似文献

In this paper the results of sampling for trace chlorinated organics at two municipal refuse incinerators in Ontario are presented. The information may be of Interest to individuals concerned with the assessment of PCDD/PCDF (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/polychlorinated dibenzofuran) emissions from incineration of refuse and their impact on the energyfrom- waste program. PCDDs, PCDFs, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), CBs (chlorobenzenes) and CPs (chlorophenols) were quantified in all process streams including refuse, ash and stack emissions. Manual sorting of refuse and collection of ash samples were carried out simultaneously with three 24-hour continuous stack sampling tests at each plant. The results suggested that the total output of PCDDs and PCDFs varied proportionately with their input at both incinerators. However, the input of PCDDs/PCDFs could not account for their total output. The chemistry of PCDDs/PCDFs in the input and output streams were different in that only heptachlorinated and octachlorinated species were present in significant quantities in the refuse while lower chlorinated species were predominant in stack emissions and ash streams. There was no correspondence between the Input of PCBs/CBs/CPs and the output of PCDDs/PCDFs. The output of PCDDs/PCDFs, however, varied Inversely with the total output of PCBs/CBs/CPs, suggesting that the latter compounds could have been partially responsible for the formation of PCDDs and PCDFs. The PCDF emissions were also affected by combustion conditions; they were higher in magnitude and consisted of predominantly tetrachlorinated and pentachlorinated species at the plant where the combustion temperatures were lower.  相似文献

The subject of this study was to develop a method of simultaneous determination of PCDDs/PCDFs and HCB in exhaust gases from industrial installations. Sampling to determine PCDDs/PCDFs was conducted using the method described in PN-EN 1948-1: 2006, where the sorption material is polyurethane foam (PUF). In order to simultaneously collect PCDDs/PCDFs and HCB and to avoid sorbent bed breakthrough, it was necessary to apply an additional polyurethane sorption layer. Twenty-seven samples of exhaust gases from various cement plants and 40 samples of exhaust gases from hospital and industrial waste incineration plants collected in 2009/2010 in the entire territory of Poland were examined. The average content of PCDDs/Fs in samples from cement plants amounted to 0.076 ng I-TEQ N m(-3) (range of 0.002-0.62 ng I-TEQ N m(-3)), while the average content of HCB amounted to 10 ng N m(-3) (range of 0.98-60.5 ng N m(-3)). In the case of samples collected from waste incineration plants, the average concentration of PCDDs/Fs was 0.39 ng I-TEQN m(-3) (range of 0.002-5.68 ng I-TEQ N m(-3)). In the case of HCB, the average concentration was 238 ng N m(-3) (range of 3.21-2500 ng N m(-3)). Also, the interdependence of the concentration of PCDDs/PCDFs and HCB was determined in the analysed samples, with the ranges of low and high content of PCDDs/PCDFs being examined separately. In all cases, the determined values of the r correlation coefficient were within the range of 0.7-1.0, which indicates a good correlation between the concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs and HCB.  相似文献

Tests have been carried out on the chemical waste incinerator operated by Re-Chem International at Bonnybridge, Scotland, to determine whether any emissions of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) or polychlorodibenzofurans (PODF) occurred during incineration under typical conditions of certain organo-chlorine feedstocks. No detectable emissions of PCDDs or PCDFs were found during the incineration of 2,4,5-I esters, pentachlorophenol residues or PCB in liquid form. A just measurable amount of 2,3,7,8 TCDF was detected during the incineration of large intact capacitors and prior shredding, or puncturing, is preferred. The measured levels of PCDDs and PCDFs in soils collected in the vicinity of the Bonnybridge plant were found to be comparable to or less than those reported in urban or rural environments elsewhere. The reported detection of these compounds in a soil sample collected in 1877 suggests that they may be ubiquitous. It is demonstrated that cows grazing close to the Bonnybridge incinerator are unlikely to have suffered ill-effects from these emissions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Much attention has been paid to the level of dioxins in breast milk in Japan but few large-scale studies have been conducted on the subject. METHODS: From 1997 to 2002, we collected 839 samples of breast milk from primiparas residing throughout Japan. Starting in 1999, breast milk was also collected from secundiparas. Seven isomers of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), 10 of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), 4 of coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs) and 8 of mono-orthochlorinated polychlorinated biphenyls (mono-ortho PCBs) were analyzed by employing gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. A correlation between the level of dioxins in human milk and the age of the mothers was noted for the primiparas and the secundiparas; and the levels were compared between the first and the second deliveries. Grouped by parity and prefecture in each year, observations were also made on the trends in these levels. Dioxin levels are shown by using geometric means because their distributions were skewed to the left. RESULTS: The sum of PCDDs and PCDFs, Co-PCBs, mono-ortho PCBs, and total dioxins in the breast milk of primiparas were 13.9, 5.4, 3.4, and 22.7 pg TEQ/g fat, respectively. In the samples obtained from secundiparas, these levels were 63-68 percents of those taken from the primiparas. The correlation coefficients between the PCDDs/DFs, Co-PCBs, mono-ortho PCBs, and total dioxins and the age of the primiparas were 0.19, 0.17, 0.36, and 0.24, respectively. All these correlations were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The positive correlations between these contaminants and the age of the secundiparas were also examined. The total dioxins as well as PCDDs/DFs, Co-PCBs, and mono-ortho PCBs in the breast milk of the primiparas declined significantly between 1998 and 2002 (regression coefficients: -0.04, -0.05, -0.03, and -0.03, respectively). However, no significant decline in these levels was observed when sorted by prefectures. CONCLUSIONS: Much attention should be paid to the age and parity of nursing mothers when investigating the relationship between the level of dioxins in breast milk and the body burden of infants.  相似文献

PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs are subject to new regulations promulgated under the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The finding of PCDDs and PCDFs in PCBs could restrict disposal options for PCBs. A review of major fire incidents in the U.S., indicates that PCDDs have been found only in the Binghamton, N.Y., transformer fire incident. Laboratory combustion studies further support PCDFs formation from PCBs and PCDDs from chlorobenzenes. No PCDDs were found in analyses of fluids from transformers involved in transformer fire incidents. PCDFs do not appear to increase in PCBs askarel fluids from normal usage in electrical equipment.  相似文献

Concentrations of 2,3,7,8-chlorine substituted PCDDs, PCDFs, selected PCB congeners and HCB were determined in sediment samples collected from sites along the east coast of Queensland in northern Australia. PCDDs were detectable in all sediment samples while PCDFs, PCBs and HCB were mainly found in sediment samples collected from sites in the Brisbane metropolitan area. The results provide evidence that an unidentified source for higher chlorinated PCDDs exists along the Queensland coast.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: To observe the relationship between the PCDD/F and Co-PCB levels in samples of human breast milk and nearby waste incinerators in Tokyo, Japan. METHODS: Breast milk was taken from 240 mothers residing in Tokyo, Japan to measure and analyze the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs; 14 congeners), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs; 15 congeners), and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs; 12 congeners) contained in the fat. Individual milk samples (about 50 ml) were obtained from the mothers 30 days after delivery, between the months of June and September in 1999 and 2000. A map of Tokyo was used to measure the distances between each mother's place of residence and the closest public and industrial waste incinerators. RESULTS: The distances to the nearest waste incinerators bore no apparent correlations with the congeners of PCDD/Fs and Co-PCBs. The distances were also uncorrelated with the mean toxic equivalent quantities (TEQs) of PCDD/Fs (the sum of PCDDs and PCDFs), Co-PCBs, and the total PCDD/Fs and Co-PCBs. CONCLUSIONS: Although waste incinerators were the largest source of dioxins in Japan at the time of the study, the dioxins levels of mother's milk bore no apparent relationships with the distances between the mothers' domiciles and the nearest waste incinerators. In this study, several meaningful factors were not taken into account, namely, the wind direction, the level of dioxin emitted from each incinerator, the level of environmental pollution of dioxins, and the average time the mothers stayed at home each day. A full understanding of these points awaits future studies.  相似文献

One bottle of Yusho rice oil was obtained from a Yusho family in 1998. The levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the causal oil were investigated with two different approaches and the individual concentrations of all the 17 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/F and 14 coplanar PCB (Co-PCB) congeners were elucidated for the first time. The concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs were found to be 0.60 and 8.8 ppm, respectively. For PCBs, more than 130 PCB peaks were observed and a total concentration of 850 ppm including 170 ppm of Co-PCBs was obtained. The toxic equivalents (TEQs) of PCDDs, PCDFs, and Co-PCBs were calculated to be 17, 470, and 120 ppb, respectively. The relative contribution of these classes to the total TEQ in Yusho oil is 3%, 77%, and 20%, respectively, indicating that PCDFs play a major role in the toxicity of Yusho oil. Furthermore, it was confirmed that 2,3,4,7,8-penta-CDF contributes 58% to the total TEQ, supporting the view that this compound is the principal causal agent in Yusho poisoning. It is noteworthy that the most toxic 2,3,7,8-tetra-CDD was newly discovered, although it contributes only 0.1% to the total TEQ. Based on our data, the smallest TEQ intake during the latent period was estimated to be 0.067 mg for Yusho patients. This value is about 60% of that previously reported, suggesting a lower minimum threshold level for the development of the toxic symptoms of Yusho.  相似文献

Dechlorination and destruction characteristics of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs) in fly ashes from commercial-scale municipal solid waste incinerators by low temperature thermal treatment using a laboratory-scale heating system were investigated. Experiments were carried out in reducing atmosphere at temperatures of 300 degrees C, 450 degrees C and 600 degrees C respectively, for the treatment time of 1h and 3h. Concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs in raw fly ashes ranged from 35.5 to 107.3 microg kg(-1) (1.5-3.4 microg TEQ kg(-1)) and treated fly ashes ranged from 0.34 to 45.3 microg kg(-1) (0.012-1.63 microg TEQ kg(-1)). Concentrations of PCDDs/PCDFs in fly ashes treated at the different temperatures and times were observed to decrease with increase of treatment temperature and time by dechlorination or destruction. The distribution of octa- and hepta-chlorinated congeners were decreased and tetra-, penta- and hexa-chlorinated congeners were increased at 300 degrees C and 450 degrees C, but the distribution of octa- and hepta-chlorinated congeners were increased and tetra-, penta- and hexa-chlorinated congeners were again decreased at 600 degrees C. Total destruction efficiencies of PCDDs/PCDFs in fly ashes showed above 95% at the treatment temperature of 450 degrees C for 3h. However, removal efficiency of each congener in fly ashes varied, especially, 2,3,7,8-TeCDD and 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD in fly ash A increased. And the dechlorination and destruction characteristics of PCDDs/PCDFs in fly ash A and B was different due to difference in contents of Ca-compounds and metal oxides such as CuO and PbO in fly ashes.  相似文献

Frequencies of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) of human lymphocytes in control (DMSO treated) and 7,8-benzoflavone (ANF) treated cultures were measured in 39 healthy Japanese people and examined in connection with donor age. Both the control (baseline) and ANF induced SCE rates were significantly enhanced with age and highly positive correlation was observed between them. Therefore, in vivo aging seemed to have some effects on the frequencies of SCEs in human lymphocytes cultured in vitro. Concentrations of PCDDs, PCDFs and Co-PCBs in the blood and sebum of face were determined in the same Japanese subjects. Significantly positive correlation was observed between the blood and sebum in their total TEQ levels. Hence, PCDDs, PCDFs and Co-PCBs, which have been contaminating human bodies, are considered proportionally excreted from the sebum of face or body. Their total TEQ concentrations were also meaningfully increased with donor age in the sebum of face as well as in the blood. Either the baseline or ANF induced SCE frequencies was not enhanced with the total TEQ levels in the blood. Therefore, background levels of their contamination seem not to affect the SCE rates of the lymphocytes in the control and ANF treated cultures.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To observe how PCDD/F and Co-PCB concentrations in breast milk relate to infant birthweights in Tokyo, Japan. STUDY DESIGN: Breast milk samples were collected from 240 mothers (aged 25-34years old) residing in Tokyo to measure the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs; 14 congeners), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs; 15 congeners), and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs; 12 congeners) in the breast milk fat. Individual milk samples (about 50ml) were obtained 30days after delivery, between the months of June and September in 1999 and 2000. The relationship of the infant birthweights with the PCDD/F and Co-PCB concentrations was observed. RESULTS: The birthweights were negatively correlated the concentrations of many of the PCDD/F and Co-PCB congeners, with the mean toxic equivalent quantities (TEQs) of the Co-PCBs, and with the sum of the PCDD, PCDF and Co-PCBs, although their correlation coefficients were less than 0.200. Multiple regression analysis showed octachlorodioxin was statistically significant explanatory variate. CONCLUSIONS: There were slight relationship between the dioxins levels of breast milk and the birthweights of the infants.  相似文献

Suspended sediments from the Detroit River were collected in 1999 and 2000 using sediment traps at sites ranging from western Lake Erie to southern Lake St. Clair and analyzed to determine the spatial distributions of contaminants including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs), dioxin-like PCBs (DLPCBs) and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). Concentrations of all three contaminant classes were clearly elevated at sites in the lower reaches of the river in the Trenton Channel. The potential influence of the Trenton Channel as a source of contamination to western Lake Erie was further evidenced by PCDD/PCDF homologue profiles, which indicated a contribution from chemical manufacturing in addition to the normal background combustion profile. Toxic equivalents (TEQs) for PCDDs/PCDFs generally exceeded those for DLPCBs; combined total TEQs in July 2000 for these two compound classes ranged from 2.30 pg/g in southern Lake St. Clair to 306 pg/g at a station just downstream of the outflow of Monguagon Creek in the Trenton Channel. The spatial distribution of PCN contamination was similar to that of PCDDs/PCDFs and DLPCBs, with the highest level of total PCNs (8200 ng/g) detected at a site in the Trenton Channel near Elizabeth Park; TEQs for PCNs in the Trenton Channel ranged from 73 to 3300 pg/g. The data indicate that PCNs represent a significant contribution to dioxin-like biological activity in Detroit River suspended sediments.  相似文献

The isomer dependent bioavailability of PCDDs and PCDFs from municipal incinerator fly ash to freshwater fish was determined. It was observed that carp exposed to fly ash in a continuous flow exposure readily accumulated select isomers of PCDDs and PCDFs. A preference for greater retention of isomers substituted in the 2, 3, 7 and 8 positions was observed. The Bioavailability Index (ratio of contaminant level in fish to level in fly ash) decreased with increasing degree of chlorination.  相似文献

Groups of guinea pigs and syrian golden hamster (n = 5) were fed 2.5% HCL pre-treated fly ash from the electrostatic precipitator of a municipal incinerator during one, two and three months, respectively, in the diet. The livers were analyzed for tetra-, penta- and hexa-chlorinated dibenzo(p)dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs).In the livers of the hamsters 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDDs and PCDFs were the major isomers retained. In the livers of the guinea pigs 2,3,7,8 substituted PCDDs and PCDF congeners were retained, but also a number of otherwise substituted PCDFs. These other PCDF congeners included some having a 2,3,6,7 or alternate chlorine substitution pattern. Those congeners retained in the livers were generally below 5% of the group dose. The PCDF congener which had the highest retention in the livers of guinea pig was 1,2,3,7,8-PnCDF, 11.3% after 95 days. In the livers of the hamsters highest retention was found for 2,3,4,7,8-PnCDF, 8.4% after 95 days. For most 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDDs and PCDFs the retention in the livers of the guinea pigs and hamsters was not significantly different during the whole period, which could indicate a bioconcentration approaching a linear relationship to the administered dose. Constant relative concentrations in the livers were found for the 2,3,7,8- substituted penta- and hexa-chlorinated PCDDs and PCDFs in both species during the three time periods.  相似文献

Removal of PCDDs/DFs and dl-PCBs in MWI fly ash by heating under vacuum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Temperature dependence of PCDD/DF and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyl (dl-PCB) concentrations in fly ash from a municipal waste incinerator (MWI) heated under vacuum has been investigated as a function of sample temperature ranging from T(s)=425 to 800 K to find out if PCDDs/DFs in fly ash evaporate and are trapped in a liquid nitrogen-cooled trap. The results show that more than 99.98% of PCDDs/DFs in TEQ is removed from fly ash by vacuum heat treatment at T(s)>650 K for 4 h. Almost no PCDDs/DFs were detected in the liquid nitrogen-cooled trap. Homologue distributions indicate that dechlorination/hydrogenation (DCH) reactions proceed in fly ash at T(s)>450 K. Arrhenius rate parameters for the DCH reactions have been determined for each homologue assuming that only DCH reactions occur. The fly ash heated under vacuum at 650 or 800 K was reheated at 573 K (300 degrees C) in a stream of dry or humid air to see how much PCDDs/DFs and dl-PCBs are regenerated. We have found that (1) PCDDs/DFs are regenerated in both 650 K and 800 K treated fly ash, whereas dl-PCBs are regenerated in 650 K treated fly ash, (2) formation of PCDFs predominates over that of PCDDs or dl-PCBs, and (3) less chlorinated homologues are abundant for PCDDs/DFs and dl-PCBs.  相似文献

Past dioxin (coplanar polychlorinated biphenyl (Co-PCB), 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF)) fluxes recorded in dated aquatic-sediment cores were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA). The data set consisted of samples from four cores collected from the Kanto region of Japan. Time trends and spatial differences in the dioxin flux were examined, and the potential relationship to emission sources was investigated. Twenty-five compounds and 58 core slices, corresponding to the later half of the 20th century, were subjected to the analysis. The PCA of both log-transformed and maximum-value-standardized data successfully divided the dioxin compounds into a small number of groups, and three similar clusters of Co-PCBs, PCDDs and penta- to hepta-CDFs were identified. PCB formulations used in the past are judged to have been responsible for the major part of the Co-PCB flux recorded in the sediment cores. However, the relationship to emission sources needs further investigation. It is suggested that most 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDDs and PCDFs are different from Co-PCBs in their emission sources or movements in the environment. The subcore clusters obtained from the PCA of log-transformed data show that the cores from different sampling areas exhibited distinct dioxin fluxes and compositions. Common time trends among the cores were more effectively summarized by the PCA of maximum-value-standardized data focusing on relative time trends. PC scores show that recently the flux of each dioxin compound in the four cores has been generally declining after having reached a peak.  相似文献

Alumina was studied as a model matrix for formation and dechlorination reactions of PCDDs and PCDFs. Only small differences in PCDD and PCDF formation were found between de-novo synthesis on alumina and on fly ash. The amounts of PCDDs and PCDFs formed on acidic alumina were much larger than on neutral and alkaline alumina. OCDD and OCDF were rapidly dechlorinated on basic alumina.  相似文献
