Measurements of total, chemical and biological oxygen consumption were made at 5 stations situated between 22 and 35 m in Lindåspollene, Norway. The results from each station did not reveal any clear seasonal variation, but the pooled data showed highest values in September, and lowest in January. Problems concerning interpretion of results of biological and chemical O2 consumption obtained by a poisoning technique (using formaldehyde) are discussed. The time-weighted mean of the annual total O2 consumption based on all stations was 10.67 ml m-2 h-1 or 92.2 l m-2 year-1. This corresponds to a consumption of 34.5g C m-2 year-1 (respiratory quotient=0.7), or 34 to 37% of the net annual primary production of phytoplankton.  相似文献

Laboratory measurements of oxygen consumption were made on Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) from protozoea to adult stage at temperatures between 15° and 35°C. The logarithmic relationship between weight-specific respiration rate (WRt) and temperature (T) for two size groups, Protozoea 1 (PZ1) to Postlarva 1 (PL1) and PL to adult, are given as; WRt=100.431+0.0146 (T) (ml O2 g-1 h-1) and WRt=10-0.948+0.0338 (T) (ml O2 g-1 h-1), respectively. Additionally, equations relating metabolic rate, temperature and size for the two size groups are; PZ1-PL1: log M=0.431+0.0146T+(1.25 (log TL)+0.579), and PL1-adult: log M=-0.948+0.0338T+(2.60(log CL)-0.683), where M=oxygen consumption in ml O2 individual -1h-1, T=temperature in °C, TL=total length in cm, and CL=carapace length in cm. Activation energies of 6 186.75 J for PZ1-PL1 and 14 066.62 J for PL-adults point to different metabolic pathways or to differences in the ratio between the metabolic pathways used.  相似文献

Individual oxygen consumption was determined during the megalopa development of Pagurus bernhardus at 18°C in 1983. The maximum observed range was from 0.101 to 0.343 l O2 h-1 ind-1. Individual respiration rate dropped by about 33% during the first two days and continued to remain at that level throughout the moult cycle. The results are discussed together with data on biomass and the fact that P. bernhardus megalopa do not feed.  相似文献

As part of the evaluation of fluxes between the water column and a rich benthic community of the Dover Strait (Eastern English Channel), laboratory measurements of oxygen consumption were carried out on a common ophiurid, Ophiothrix fragilis (Abildgaard), from February 1993 to February 1995. The mean O2-consumption rate was evaluated at 0.31 mg O2 g−1 h−1 (ash-free dry weight). Simultaneous measurements of O2 consumption and CO2 production using the pH-alkalinity method revealed an average respiratory quotient of 0.69 proved suitable for converting oxygen demand to carbon flux. A seasonal trend in respiration data was demonstrated by sinusoidal curves fitted to O2-uptake and CO2-release data as a function of time. The influence on respiration rate of two seasonal parameters (temperature and food availability) is discussed; linear regression indicated a highly significant relationship between O2 consumption (or CO2 production) and temperature; both O2-consumption and CO2-production rates decreased with starvation. The average O:N ratio was estimated at 8.46, close to the theoretical value when proteins constitute the catabolic substrate. The annual carbon respired by the O. fragilis community examined and the estimated annual primary production by phytoplankton indicate that the respiration of the O. fragilis community could supply 35% of phytoplankton carbon requirements. The vertical distribution, diel gut pigment content and oxygen consumption of Calanus euxinus were studied in April and September 1995 in the Black Sea. Gut pigment content of C. euxinus females was associated with diel vertical migration of the individuals, and it varied with depth and time. Highest gut pigment content was observed during the nighttime, when females were in the chlorophyll a (chl a) rich surface waters, but significant feeding also occurred in the deep layer. Gut pigment content throughout the water column varied from 0.8 to 22.0 ng pigment female–1 in April and from 0.2 to 21 ng pigment female–1 in September 1995. From the diel vertical migration pattern, it was estimated that female C. euxinus spend 7.5 h day–1 in April and 10.5 h day–1 in September in the chl a rich surface waters. Daily consumption by female C. euxinus in chl a rich surface waters was estimated by taking into account the feeding duration and gut pigment concentrations. Daily carbon rations of female C. euxinus, derived from herbivorous feeding in the euphotic zone, ranged from 6% to 11% of their body carbon weight in April and from 15% to 35% in September. Oxygen consumption rates of female and copepodite stage V (CV) C. euxinus were measured at different temperatures and at different oxygen concentrations. Oxygen consumption rates at oxygen-saturated concentration ranged from an average of 0.67 g O2 mg–1 dry weight (DW) h–1 at 5°C to 2.1 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for females, and ranged from 0.48 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 5°C to 1.5 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for CVs. The rate of oxygen consumption at 16°C varied from 0.62 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.65 mg O2 l–1 to 1.57 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.35 mg O2 l–1 for CVs, and from 0.74 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.57 mg O2 l–1 to 2.24 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.37 mg O2 l–1 for females. From the oxygen consumption rates, daily requirements for the routine metabolism of females were estimated, and our results indicate that the herbivorous daily ration was sufficient to meet the routine metabolic requirements of female C. euxinus in April and September in the Black Sea.Communicated by O. In situ measurements of community respiration were made at two stations in Castle Harbor, Bermuda, during April and May, 1971. Total community respiration was 20.67 and 19.11 ml O2 m-2 h-1 at Stations 1 and 2, respectively, in April. In May, respiration increased with water temperature to 26.99 and 24.56 ml O2 m-2 h-1. Significant differences (P<0.05) existed between stations and sampling periods. Bacterial respiration was estimated from sediment treatment with streptomycin-SO4. Values ranged from 7.71 to 8.72 ml O2 m-2 h-1 in April and May, respectively. No significant difference existed between sampling periods or stations. No detectable chemical O2 demand of the sediment, determined by a formalin treatment, was found. Total community respiration was further compartmentalized into macrofaunal, meiofaunal, and microfaunal-microfloral components. Both the macrofaunal and meiofaunal respiration was negligible compared to that estimated for the microfaunal-microfloral component.Contribution No. 2708 from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Contribution No. 552 from the Bermuda Biology Station. Synchronous measurements were made of the routine rate of oxygen consumption and the clearance rate of Phaeodactylum tricornutum at different exposure temperatures by specimens of the suspension-feeding gastropod Crepidula fornicata which had been acclimated to temperatures between 10° and 25°C. The results show that the cost of activity (l O2 consumed h-1/ml seawater cleared h-1) increases dramatically in individuals exposed to short-term increases of temperature up to 30°C, especially in limpets acclimated to 10°C. The process of thermal acclimation, however, results in two compensatory adjustments in energy expenditure and uptake which profoundly affect the energetics of water transport. Firstly, the routine oxygen consumption shows lateral translation of the rate-temperature curve which results in the maintenance of a relatively uniform energy expenditure despite an increase in acclimation temperature from 10° to 25°C. Secondly, because of the form of the rate-temperature curve for filtration by C. fornicata, lateral translation in response to warm acclimation results in an increase in the maximal clearance rate. Lateral translation of the rate-temperature curves for feeding rates and for oxygen consumption in response to thermal acclimation may thus be linked to maintain a balance between energy gain and expenditure. In this way, the greatly increased cost of activity which would occur with increase of temperature in the absence of acclimation is evaded. The minimal maintenance energy requirement, and hence the greatest scope for growth and reproduction, is then adjusted to coincide with temperatures prevailing in the environment.  相似文献

Metabolism of two abundant echinoderm species constituting 99.6% of the epibenthic megafauna in the Santa Catalina Basin, off southern California, USA was measured at 1 300 m during the 1979 “Bathyal Expedition”. Specimens of the ophiuroid Ophiophthalmus normani and the holothurian Scotoplanes globosa, collected by the submersible “Alvin”, were individually placed in respirometers, and measured in situ for O2 consumption and ammonium excretion rates. For O. normani, weight-specific O2 consumption rates decreased with increasing weight and were of comparable magnitude to rates of deep-sea and shallow-water ophiuroids; excretion rates were highly variable. Population O2 consumption and excretion rates for O. normani (estimated from size-frequency distribution, abundance, and rate regression equations) were 1 129.28 μl O2 m-2 h-1 and 27.30 nmol NH 4 + m-2 h-1. Weight-specific O2 consumption and ammonium excretion rates of S. globosa decreased with increasing weight and were of comparable magnitude to rases of shallow-water holothurians. Population O2 constimption and excretion rates of S. globosa were 1.38 μl O2 m-2 h-1 and 4.86 nmol NH 4 + m-2 h-1. Combined population O2 consumption rates for O. normani and S. globosa are of comparable magnitude to that of the sediment community and plankton in the benthic boundary layer (sediment and overlying 50 m water column) of the Santa Catalina Basin.  相似文献

Analysis of biochemical components and measurements of oxygen consumption rates of cypris larvae of Balanus balanoides (L.) maintained in the laboratory at 10°C for up to 5 weeks after capture shows that lipid is the primary energy reserve, although later protein is utilised. Initially, the cyprids swim freely with an oxygen consumption rate of ca. 37×10-3 l O2 h-1 cyprid-1, but within a few days the rate falls to ca. 21×10-3 l O2 h-1 cyprid-1 when they cease swimming and explore the substratum. The cost of metamorphosis was calculated both from the loss of biochemical components and oxygen consumption rates during metamorphosis; the values were 2.8×10-2 and 3.2×10-2 cal cyprid-1, respectively. A budget was collated from the data on respiration and biochemical composition, whereby the energy per cyprid was partitioned into that required for essential structural components (6.8×10-2 cal), that needed for metamorphosis (3.0×10-2 cal) and an excess available for swimming and exploring, which in the batches studied was about 5.0×10-2 cal. This excess is mainly derived from the utilisation of lipid reserves and is used up usually 2 1/2 to 4 weeks after capture. During these measurements, samples of cyprids were taken at weekly intervals to test the rate of settlement and success of metamorphosis. The results showed that they lose their competence to metamorphose successfully approximately at the same time (3 to 4 weeks) that the energy supply for swimming and exploration is used up.  相似文献

Constructing realistic energy budgets for Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, is hampered by the lack of data on the metabolic costs associated with swimming. In this study respiration rates and pleopod beating rates were measured at six current speeds. Pleopod beating rates increased linearly with current speed, reaching a maximum of 6 beats s–1 at 17 cm s–1. There was a concomitant linear increase in respiration rate, from 1.8 mg O2 gD–1 h–1 at 3 cm s–1 to 8.0 mg O2 gD–1 h–1 at 17 cm s–1. The size of the group tested (50, 100 and 300 krill) did not have a significant effect on pleopod beating rates or oxygen consumption (ANCOVA, F=0.264; P>0.05). The cost of transport reached a maximum of 75 J g–1 km–1 at 5 cm s–1, and then decreased with increasing current speed to 29 J g–1 km–1. When considered in light of energy budgets for E. superba, these data indicate that the cost of swimming could account for up to 73% of total daily metabolic expenditure during early summer.Communicated by G.F. Monthly variation in photosynthesis, dark respiration, chlorophyll a content and carbon: nitrogen (C:N) ratios in different lamina sections of adult plants of Ascoseira mirabilis Skottsberg from King George Island, Antarctica, was investigated between September 1993 and February 1994. Light saturated net photosynthesis (P max) showed maximum values in September (12 to 25 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1), and decreased towards the summer to values ranging between 2.0 and 5.0 mol O2 g-1. In the distal section, however, a second optimum occurred in December (25 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1). Dark respiration rates were also highest in October and November and decreased strongly in December to February (6.0 and 1.0 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1, respectively). Gross photosynthesis exhibited high values between September and December. Concomitant with the seasonal decrease of photosynthetic efficiency () from mean values of 1.2 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1 (mol photons cm-2 s-1)-1 in September to 0.3 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1 (mol photons cm-2 s-1)-1 in January, the initial light saturating point (I k) gradually increased from 19 to 60 mol photons m-2 s-1. Likewise C:N ratios were low in spring (12 to 13) and increased in summer (20). In general, the photosynthetic parameters P max, gross photosynthesis, and Chl a concentrations were significantly higher in the distal section of the thallus. In contrast, C:N ratios were lower in the distal section of the lamina. The results show that photosynthesis obviously strongly supports growth of the alga in late winter to spring, as it does in some morphologically related brown algae from temperate and polar regions. The question whether growth is additionally powered  相似文献

Automatic potentiometric determination of dissolved oxygen   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Commercially available automatic titration systems were tested in 1988 for potentiometric titration of liberated iodine by the Winkler method of oxygen determination. The potentiometric equivalence point was also compared to the manual starch end point. Finally the automatic method was used in order to estimate belowhalocline respiration in the Kattegat, Sweden. Standard deviations of 0.007 ml O2 l–1 or 0.1 to 0.3% coefficients of variation (% standard deviation of the mean) were achieved when titrating 25 ml from replicate 60-ml oxygen bottles using the automatic method, or 50 ml manually. The precision for replicate titrations of 50-ml aliquots of 0.001N KIO3 was <0.05% (0.002 ml 0.01N Na2S2O3) for the automatic method. Titration time for 25-ml aliquots was 2 to 4 min, somewhat longer than for manual titrations (1 to 1.5 min). However, during titration the operator is free to perform other tasks. It is not possible to use automatic sample changers, due to rapid iodine volatilization. The equipment can be handled by relatively unskilled analysts and is suitable for use on board research vessels or in field stations [weight for a MettlerTM titrator (Mettler Instrumente AG, Greifensee, Switzerland) <10 kg, volume <0.1 m3]. Below-halocline oxygen consumption in the SE Kattegat ranged from 0 to 6 ml O2 m–3 h–1 (mean values for September and October 1988=1.69 and 0.66 ml O2 m–3 h–1, respectively, with 95% confidence limits of ca. ±0.6 ml O2 m–3 h–1).  相似文献

Individuals of the midwater ctenophore Bathocyroe fosteri (0.01 to 1.6 g dry weight, DW) were collected from Bahamian waters by the submersible Johnson-Sea-Link during May and September/October 1983 and October/November 1984 from 530 to 700 m depth. Metabolic rates were measured and showed oxygen consumption to be in the range of 0.01 to 0.18 mg O2 g-1 DW h-1 at temperatures ranging from 9° to 12°C. Ammonium excretion (0.01 to 0.14 g-at N g-1 DW h-1) was typically low. Energy expenditures estimated from respiration data (ca. 7% body C d-1) indicated that one to three midwater crustacean prey (ca. 150 g C d-1) could provide the daily maintenance ration required by a 40 mm ctenophore. These metabolic characteristics complemented in situ observations of poor locomotor ability and passive feeding behavior.  相似文献

The seasonal variation in growth rate of a population of Laminaria digitata (Huds.) Lamour growing at Arbroath, Scotland was studied between August 1981 and September 1982, and was found to follow the biphasic annual cycle typical of this genus. Growth rates were maximum (0.3 cm cm-1 mo-1) in early June and minimum (0.05 cm cm-1 mo-1) between September and January. An analysis of the relationship between the seasonal changes in environmental factors (inorganic nitrogen concentrations, irradiance and temperature) with those of growth rate and the accumulation or mobilisation of cellular reserves of carbohydrates and nitrate, indicated that growth was nitrogen-limited between June and October and light-limited (with a possible co-involvement of temperature) for the remainder of the year. These conclusions were supported by the seasonal changes in the ratio of actual: potential in-vivo nitrate reductase activities in L. digitata, thus confirming the suitability of this technique for monitoring the occurrence of nitrogen limitation in Laminaria spp. The seasonal changes in blade nitrate reductase activities closely followed those of growth rate, with maximum activities [0.3 mol NO 3 - reduced g-1 (wet wt) h-1] being present in late May and minimum levels [0.01 mol NO 3 - reduced g-1 (wet wt) h-1] occurring between November and March. The correlation observed between nitrate reductase activities and growth rate is consistent with the ability of Laminaria spp. to store excess inorganic nitrogen, available during winter and early spring, as NO 3 - , and with the requirement to conserve enzyme protein during the summer period of nitrogen limitation.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption of individual larvae of the Antarctic sea-star Odontaster validus was measured during the 50-day period following fertilisation. Values ranged from 0.76 pmol O2 h-1 for one specimen at the coeloblastula stage to 77.6 pmol O2 h-1 for one bipinnaria larva. At 0°C the mean oxygen consumption rate of an individual larva increased from 10.9 pmol O2 h-1 (standard error of the mean, SEM, 0.13) for a gastrula larva, 13 days post-fertilisation, to 25.4 pmol O2 h-1 (SEM 3.5) at the bipinnaria stage (50 days post-fertilisation). Gastrulae reared at -0.5°C did not have significantly different oxygen consumption rates between days 13 and 45 post-fertilisation (mean=11.4 pmol O2 h-1). Individual metabolic rates were highly variable, covering more than a 40-fold range. At 2°C gastrula oxygen consumption was on average 45% higher (17.35 pmol O2 h-1), giving a Q10 temperature effect of 4.4. For bipinnaria, mean oxygen consumption in 2°C larvae (31.4 pmol O2 h-1) was not significantly different from that in larvae at -0.5°C, suggesting bipinnaria metabolism may be less sensitive to temperature change than earlier stages. At 2°C the bipinnaria stage was reached at 30-35 days compared with 45-50 days at 0°C, giving a Q10 of 4.5 for temperature effects on development. The method here used a new, highly sensitive micro-respirometry method that is inexpensive and straightforward in design. Individual larvae of O. validus were held in 35- to 50-µl respirometers. These larvae have very low metabolic rates, and published work on such organisms have utilised at least 25 individuals per chamber. The oxygen content of the respirometers was measured using a 25-µl sample injected into a couloximeter. Oxygen consumption rates down to -1 pmol h-1 can be detected. Under optimum conditions oxygen consumption of a single larva of -4 pmol O2 h-1 was measured with an accuracy of ᆨ%. Values of ~15 pmol h-1 could routinely be measured with this accuracy. This method would allow oxygen consumption to be evaluated in individual field-caught larvae of most marine ectotherms.  相似文献

The respiratory physiology of summer diapausing eggs of the neustonic copepodAnomalocera patersoni, maintained under constant temperature (13 °C) and light (12 h light:12 h dark) conditions, was characterized by a bell-shaped curve, with low O2 uptake levels at the beginning of dormancy. This was followed by a steady rise in O2 consumption with maximum levels of 0.002 l O2 embryo–1 h–1 70 d after spawning. A slow diminution in O2 uptake then occurred until Day 150 when minimum values of 0.0003 l O2 embryo–1 h–1 were recorded, coinciding with the hatching of the first embryos. Embryos continued to hatch asynchronously up to 360 d from the moment of egg laying. When eggs were subjected to 20 °C, the respiratory activity was almost three times higher than at 13 °C, even though both respiratory curves were similar. The elevated metabolism in eggs kept at 20 °C led to death of the embryos possibly due to a total depletion of metabolic reserves. ATP content also differed at the two temperatures. Diapause eggs kept at 20 °C showed no rapid rise in ATP content as opposed to those kept at 13 °C. The results of temperature shock experiments, in which eggs were first kept at winter temperatures for several weeks, after which the temperature was raised to 20 °C for another number of weeks prior to a second period of chilling at 13 °C, showed that as long as embryos were kept at 20 °C no hatching occurred. By contrast, hatching was observed after 10 d following the resumption of winter temperatures, suggesting that low environmental temperatures are an essential prerequisite for hatching of these eggs. The type of diapause inA. patersoni differs considerably from the one described in insects and in another neustonic copepod,Pontella mediterrana. In this case, there is a U-shaped respiratory curve with greatest O2 consumption prior to the onset or upon breaking of diapause. Differences in the two types of diapause seem to involve not only differences in O2 consumption levels but also in the sequence of metabolic changes with time and the metabolic requirements during sommer and winter dormancy.  相似文献

Methane mussels (Bathymodiolus sp., undescribed; personal communication by R. Turner to CRF) were collected in September 1989 and April 1990 from offshore Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. These mussels contain endosymbiotic methane-oxidizing bacteria and are capable of utilizing environmental methane as a source of energy and carbon. Oxygen consumption, methane consumption, and carbon dioxide production were measured in mussels with intact symbionts, functionally aposymbiotic mussels, and separated symbiont preparations under controlled oxygen and methane conditions, in order to study the roles of the symbionts and the hosts in methane utilization. The association was found to be very efficient in fixing methane carbon (only 30% of CH4 consumed is released as CO2), and to be capable of maximal rates of net carbon uptake of nearly 5 mol g-1 h-1. Rates of oxygen and methane consumption were dependent upon oxygen and methane concentrations. Maximal consumption rates were measured at 250 to 300 M O2 and 200 to 300 M CH4, under which conditions, oxygen consumption by the gill tissues (containing symbionts) had increased more than 50-fold over rates measured in the absence of methane. A model is proposed for the functioning of the intact association in situ, which shows the symbiosis to be capable of achieving growth rates (net carbon assimilation) in the range of 0.003 to 0.50% per day depending upon oxygen and methane concentrations. Under the conditions measured in the seep environment (200 M O2, 60 M CH4), a mussel consuming methane at rates found to be typical (4 to 5 mol g-1 h-1) should have a net carbon assimilation rate of about 0.1% per day. We suggest that the effectiveness of this symbiosis arises through integration of the morphological and physiological characteristics inherent to each of the symbiotic partners, rather than from extensive specialization exhibited by other deep-sea chemotrophic associations.  相似文献

The influence of temperature has been studied simultaneously on the pumping, filtration, and digestion rates of Phallusia mammillata (Cuvier, 1815). Eighteen experiments were made between 7° and 25°C on 5 individuals. The average velocities of the water current varied between 3.37 and 9.65 cm sec-1 (maximum 34.90 cm sec-1). No recognizable rhythm emerged; pumping was continuous except at 7°C, where it soon ceased. Above 20°C, the curves were irregular and reflected the high sensitivity of the ascidian. The pumping rate was highest at 15°C (mean=5,788 ml h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs). At 10°C, the mean was 3,560; at 20°C, 2,629 ml h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs. At 20°C, the coefficients of variation displayed higher values, indicating a more irregular pumping at this temperature. Although there was no filtration rhythm, the variability of the results was higher at 20°C and above. As for pumping, maximum values were observed at 15°C (mean=4,286 ml h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs) decreasing with lower and higher temperatures, such decreases being more marked at the higher temperatures. Means were 352 ml h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs at 7°C; 2,935 at 10°C; 1,995 at 20°C; 973 at 25°C. The mean temperature coefficients for the filtration rates were: Q10 for 7° to 15°C=11.86, Q10 for 10° to 20°C=0,66, Q10 for 15° to 25°C=0.22. The filtering efficiency was fairly constant throughout an experiment; the pumping and filtration curves were in fact almost parallel. The filtering efficiency of the branchial sac was high (75 to 85%), with constant values at 10° and 15°C; it became smaller (59%) at 20°C, with a higher coefficient of variation. The digestion rate also displayed maximum values at 15°C (mean=5.47 mg of albumin equivalent 24 h-1 g-1 dry weight of organs). It was lower at 10°C (mean=3.60 mg) and reached its minimum at 20°C (mean=1.71 mg). The higher temperature affected the percentage of food utilization, which showed smaller values at 20°C (59%) than at 10°C (89%) and 15°C (87%).  相似文献

The energy of the body components and the energy costs of spawning and overwintering in the bay anchovy Anchoa mitchilli, the most abundant fish in Chesapeake Bay, were studied to determine seasonal variability during the different stages of its life cycle. Bimonthly samples were collected by trawl from April 1990 through October 1991. Fish condition and body energy levels fluctuated seasonally, and were related to anchovy size. Energy equivalents (cal g-1 dry wt) was highest in December, before the overwintering period. The somatic weight component increased by 32 to 33% and total body weight by 26% during the spawning season, indicating that feeding not only met energy requirements of daily spawning but also provided surplus energy for growth. The overwintering loss of energy was 33 to 35% of total body calories, and was primarily derived from deposit fat in somatic and visceral tissues.  相似文献

The relationship between activity of the lateral cilia and oxygen consumption was studied in fragments of the gills of Mytilus edulis L., and the effects of stimulation with the nerve transmitters serotonin and dopamine were measured. Beat frequency, f, and oxygen consumption, MO 2, increased with increasing doses of the transmitters. Serotonin increased f up to 26 Hz and the relationship with MO 2 could be described by MO 2 (l cm-2 gill area h-1)=0.44+0.35 f (r=0.99). The relationship after dopamine stimulation did not differ from that established by serotonin, but the maximum value of f was only 19 Hz. At the frequency of 10 Hz, characteristic of undisturbed pumping, the cells carrying the lateral cilia were estimated to account for one third of the total oxygen consumed, equivalent to 1.05×10-10 mol ATP cm-2 s-1. This rate of synthesis of ATP was compared with the rate at which the active cilia hydrolyse ATP. ATP hydrolysis ranged from 58 to 87% of synthesis as the assumed ratio between number of ATP molecules hydrolysed per beat and number of dynein molecules ranged from 2 to 3. The rate at which ATP is hydrolysed by the active cilia was compared with the work done in pumping water. At two estimates available of the pumping pressure, 1.4 and 2.5 mm H2O, the work amounted to 1.4×10-6 or 2.5×10-6 joule cm-2 s-1, equivalent to 2.9×10-11 and 5.2×10-11 mol ATP cm-2 s-1. The efficiencies of work thus corresponded to 48 or 86% at the ATP/dynein ratio of 2. The overall efficiencies of the mussel pump amounted to 18 or 32%.  相似文献
