The reproductive biology of the alfonsino Beryx splendens was studied by histological examinations, gonadosomatic index and macroscopic scales of maturation of a large sample of gonads. Alfonsino is a gonochoric species. The size-frequency distribution of the sex ratio was bimodal and considered to be due to size dimorphism. In New Caledonia, the breeding period of this species occurs during the southern summer, with a peak in December to January. The spawning stage is attained at a minimum fork length of 28 cm for females and 33 cm for males. The size at which 50% of the population attain sexual maturity (FL50) is 33.2 cm for females and 34.5 cm for males. Maximum potential fecundity is estimated to lie between 270 000 to 675 000 eggs for fish between 34 and 40 cm in fork length. It was possible to differentiate vegetative zones, in which juvenile alfonsino grow until they reach maturity, from reproductive zones (fishing grounds) which are inhabited by mature individuals. The larvae and juveniles could be carried from the reproductive zone to the vegetative zone by currents in an oceanic eddy system. Received: 26 April 1996 / Accepted: 20 September 1996  相似文献

Although New Caledonia is surrounded by one of the 3 largest coral reef systems of the world, the published generic records indicate abnormally low coral diversity. Exploration of the reefs in the south-eastern part of the island, largely by means of SCUBA, has yielded specimens which increase the known genera and sub-genera by 50%. New Caledonia now ranks sixth among the coral provinces of the world, with at least 53 genera and sub-genera of reef-building corals. Many of the new records were made in a type of coral environment unlike any previously described. Comparison of the New Caledonia fauna with those of Fiji, the Grett Barrier Reef of Australia, and the Ryukyu Islands reaffirms the remarkable homogeneity of the Indo-Pacific coral faunas.  相似文献

The biomass of the macrobenthic communities of the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia is analysed with special reference to tropical soft-bottom assemblages. The samples were obtained in 1986 from 350 Smith-McIntyre grabs as well as by diving over an area of 3 500 m2, and covered a wide size-range of benthic organisms. The classification of the biomass data into taxonomic groups revealed the following: (1) a zoobenthic biomass (mean=13 g ash-free dry wt m-2) that is high compared to values previously published for tropical systems, but fairly low compared to those recorded for medium and high latitudes; (2) a large macrophytic biomass (45% of ash-free dry wt); (3) dominance by weight of sponges, molluscs and cnidarians over the other faunal groups. The distribution of the biomass among the trophic groups revealed the following: (1) the dominance by weight of suspension-feeders, which account for 67% of the total zoobenthic ash-free dry wt; (2) the absence of trophic group amensalism between filter-feeders and deposit-feeders whatever the degree of bottom muddiness; (3) the existence of a relationship between the biomass of surface deposit-feeders and ATP at the surface layer of the sediment, suggesting that this group feeds preferentially on living particles. Differences in trophic structure between the muddy-bottom, greysand and white-sand communities of the lagoon reflect the functional characteristics of each bottom type.  相似文献

In the southern and southwestern coral reef lagoon of New Caledonia and the adjacent oceanic waters, 42 neuston samples were collected from the upper surface layer (0 to 10 cm) along nine transects from the coast to the coral barrier reef and the open ocean immediately beyond the reef, in March and April 1979. There was a progressive numerical decrease in zooplankton densities from the coast to the reef and from the reef to the open sea. Generally, 80 to 95% of the surface plankton consisted of holoplankton and 5 to 20% of meroplankton. Zooplankton was very abundant in littoral bays with a marked eutrophication. In a few samples collected in very shallow waters close to coral patches, cladocerans were numerous and constituted up to 75% of the total plankton, whilst in other samples collected above greater depths, copepods made up 60 to 85% of the total plankton. In the coral reef lagoon of south and southwest New Caledonia, typically hyponeustonic copepods (pontellids) often comprised 5% of the total copepod populations.  相似文献

A computer model is used to investigate the simulated growth of a theoretical dinoflagellate resembling Gymnodinium splendens in response to a variety of field conditions. Literature data on G. splendens are combined with probable estimates of organism response (where direct data are lacking) to yield light-and temperature-dependent production curves. These production curves are superimposed on a physical model characterized by a diurnally variable light cycle, by a two-layered water column (16°C water overlaying 12°C water) of variable layer thicknesses, and by variable extinction coefficients in the upper layer. The water column is either stationary or perturbed by a semidiurnal (12.4 h) internal wave. Organism behavior ranges from the continuous occupation of selected strata (stationary or wavy) to diurnal vertical migrations within the upper layer or across the thermocline. In stationary water columns, species patchiness depends on spatial differences in the depth preferences of nonmigrating organisms or in the details of the behavior of migrating organisms. In water columns perturbed by a semidiurnal internal wave, spatial differences in the phase relationship between the wave form and daylight supplement organism behavior as a source of patchiness. Allozyme variation was used to investigate the genetic structure of the coral reef fishes Stegastes nigricans, Epinephelus merra and Acanthurus triostegus around New Caledonia. Each species was sampled from each of three sites in the ≃1000 km circumference of the lagoon of New Caledonia. Allelic variation was recorded for each species at 14, 13 and 17 loci, respectively, and heterozygosity diversity (H s) was 0.082, 0.065 and 0.116, respectively. Analysis of genetic differentiation between sites produced inconsistent results between species, with spatial heterogeneity in two species (S. nigricans, F st  = 0.038; A. triostegus, F st = 0.049) and homogeneity in one species (E. merra, F st = 0.000). Hydrological and climatic data from the lagoon suggest that the eastern and western sides of the lagoon are isolated, since they lie in water masses of different origin. This may explain the genetic differentiation and restricted gene flow found at a local scale for S. nigricans and A. triostegus. The structure and trophic organization of two intertidal seagrass-bed communities (Halodule uninervis and Thalassia hemprichii) were examined on the southwest coast of New Caledonia (SW Pacific Ocean), from April 1989 to March 1990. Five benthic samples were collected from each site at 2 mo intervals and various environmental parameters were simultaneously monitored. Animal:plant biomass ratios were close to 1 at both sites. Polychaetes dominated in number of species. The suspension-feeding bivalves Gafrarium tumidum and Anadara scapha constituted the greater part of the animal biomass. The evolution of the communities over an annual cycle displayed marked structural and organizational stability, resulting mainly from the absence of distinct recruitment periods for the dominant species, no mortalities during the brief low-salinity periods, and no temporal variations in the granulometry, the organic matter or the chlorophyll a contents of the sediments.  相似文献

This study aims at describing the diversity and composition of larval and juvenile fish assemblages in coastal areas of New Caledonia, southwest Pacific, and identifying the environmental factors that influence the seasonal and spatial patterns of these assemblages. A total of 97 taxa belonging to 7 orders and 26 familis were captured in three bays near Nouméa by light trapping every month between January 2002 and June 2003. The assemblages were dominated by Clupeiform larvae and juveniles (96.4% of total abundance) and followed by Perciform larvae (3%). The number of taxa per sample varied from less than five in July–August to more than ten in October–November and abundances followed the same seasonal pattern. Analyses of similarity showed significant differences in the assemblages caught in the three bays and analyses of contribution to the dissimilarity revealed that these differences were due to the most abundant families. The constant part of the relationship between environmental variables and the composition of assemblages was assessed by the partial triadic analysis STATICO, a statistical approach that takes into account the strong seasonality of the data. Rainfall, wind direction and thermal stratification of the water column were found to play a major role in the structure of the assemblages, although tidal amplitude and wind speed became important when Clupeidae and Engraulididae were excluded from the analyses. The richness, relative abundances and seasonal variations of the assemblages caught in three bays under study are close to what has been observed elsewhere in the tropics. This study shows the efficiency of the STATICO analysis for identifying the environmental factors that have a permanent effect on assemblages and sorting them out from those which act temporally or on specific locations. The high abundances and diversity of coral-reef fish larvae observed in coastal zones of New Caledonia suggest that further studies are needed to fully explore the role of the coastal zones of New Caledonia as nurseries.  相似文献

Seasonal sampling was carried out based on day/night, vertically stratified tows (100 or 125 m strata) in the upper 900 m of the water column over the mid-slope commercial fishing grounds south of Tasmania. A large midwater trawl (105 m2 mouth area) was used with an opening/closing cod-end. Subtropical convergence and subtropical species dominated the fauna, but many less abundant, more widely-distributed species were also present. Fishes, which contributed 89% of micronekton biomass and 135 of 178 species, were dominated by the Myctophidae (48% biomass and 48 species). Twenty micronekton species made up 80% of the total biomass. Overall, the micronekton fish biomass in this region was 2.2 g m−2 wet weight. A pronounced day/night shift in the distribution of biomass was attributable to diel migratory species. During the day, <0.2% of the total micronekton biomass was found in 0 to 300 m; most biomass was below 400 m, with peaks at 400 to 525 m and 775 to 900 m. At night, 53% of the biomass was found in 0 to 300 m, with progressively less in each deeper stratum. The vertical ranges of individual species typically exceeded 400 to 500 m during the day and night and were non-coincident, although nyctoepipelagic migrators were concentrated in the surface 200 m at night. Distinct epipelagic, lower and upper mesopelagic assemblages were identified, and patterns of epipelagic migration, limited migration and non-migration were categorised for species from each of the lower and upper mesopelagic assemblages. The vertical distribution of these assemblages was coincident with the primary water masses: subantarctic mode water (∼250 to 600 m) and antarctic intermediate water (below ∼700 m). The flux of migrating micronekton, estimated at 0.94 to 3.36 g C m−2 yr−1 to the lower mesopelagic and 1.14 to 4.06 g C m−2 yr−1 to the upper mesopelagic, appeared to be considerably outweighed by the consumption needs of aggregated mid-slope benthopelagic predators. We suggest that advection of mesopelagic prey in antarctic intermediate water may sustain aggregated populations of orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) and other predators on the micronekton in mid-slope depths at this site. The growth of the lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) in laboratory tanks was studied. The moult increments of males and females were not significantly different. The growth per moult was of the progressive geometric type throughout the life of the lobster, including the larval instars. Moulting in both the laboratory and the natural population occurred throughout the year in males, but there was a peak of moulting activity in females from June to August. There was no indication of a terminal anecdysis. Size-frequency histograms from monthly samples taken 10 to 20 miles south-west of the Isle of Man over a period of 21/2 years provided data on the growth of the year classes. It is possible to recognise the year classes in females at least, until the lobsters are 3 to 4 years old. Instar determination based on the numbers of aesthetasc-bearing segments of the antennule and on the numbers of lamellae in the endocuticle was unsuccessful. Estimates of the numbers of moults occurring in each year, and the expected mean sizes of the year classes are given.  相似文献

Shells of known-age Mya arenaria have revealed an internal annual growth pattern in this bivalve. The number of external growth rings on the shell exterior does not correspond to the age of the clams. This study provides an alternative method to using external annual rings for age determination. The internal growth lines are visible in thin sections when the shells are cut from the umbo to the ventral margin. The lines are formed by late spring of each year prior to spawning and are probably in response to decreased winter growth. When the 7 year olds were examined it was difficult to distinguish the most recent growth line and the inner shell layer. This could result in ages being underestimated. This annual pattern of internal growth lines could be useful to biologists and paleoecologists engaged in population studies.  相似文献

From July 1982 to December 1986, a study of the age and growth of the bonnethead shark Sphyrna tiburo was conducted in Tampa and Florida Bays, Florida, USA. Tetracycline-injected sharks held in captivity and, to a lesser extent, tagged, released and recaptured, were utilized for validating the annual nature of the rings (herein defined as the narrow, translucent regions) appearing on vertebral centra. The technique was validated for all age groups (0 to 6+yr) included in the study. Marginal increment analysis likewise suggested annual ring formation. The rings formed during the winter, when water temperatures were lowest. Using the vertebral ring aging-technique, von Bertalanffy growth curves for males and females from both tampa and Florida Bays were constructed. Growth of sharks born and held in captivity demonstrated that the male and female growth curves diverge after 1 yr and that mean sizes at age are statistically distinct after 2 yr. In both populations, females grew to larger sizes tha males and apparently are longer-lived. Reproductively mature females from Tampa Bay were significantly larger than those from Florida Bay.  相似文献

Weekly samples were collected near Kingston, Jamaica in 27 m vertical hauls, using 200 and 64µm mesh plankton nets, from July 1985 to January 1987. Thirtytwo copepod species were identified; nauplii and all copepodite stages were enumerated. Total copepod abundance ranged from 2.56 to 87.3 × 104 m–2. The annual abundance cycle was bimodal with peaks in October–November and May–June corresponding to the rainy seasons. Mean annual copepodite biomass was 0.15 g AFDW m–2 ranging from 0.03 to 0.41 g AFDW m–2. Mean generation time (from egg to adult) at 28°C was 19.5 d for the common speciesCentropages velificatus, Paracalanus aculeatus, andTemora turbinata. Isochronal development was demonstrated for copepodites ofP. aculeatus andT. turbinata, but not forC. velificatus. Mean daily specific growth rates (G) were 0.63, 0.63, and 0.48 d–1 forC. velificatus, P. aculeatus, andT. turbinata, respectively. In general, daily specific growth rates decreased in the later copepodite stages. Thus, it is postulated that growth of later stages and egg production may be food limited. Annual copepodite production was estimated as 419 kJ m–2 yr–1, while annual exuvial production and naupliar production were 35 and 50 kJ m–2 yr–1, respectively. Egg production was estimated as 44% (184 kJ m–2 yr–1) of the total copepodite production. Thus, mean total annual copepod production was 688 kJ m–2 yr–1. This estimate is within the range of copepod production estimates in coastal temperate regions.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in ambient NO 3 and NH 4 + , tissue composition (N, C, and C/N ratio), and frond growth rates for Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) Agardh were examined. Ambient NO 3 showed distinct seasonal variations. Frond growth rates were variable, but showed no clear correlation to ambient NO 3 . The average N content of plant tissue did, however, show the same seasonal variations as ambient NO 3 . The longitudinal distribution of total tissue N and various components of tissue N along fronds were also analyzed. Several distinct patterns were found: high levels of protein N at growing tips and elevated levels of soluble N in lower parts of the frond. Free amino acids accounted for a major portion of the soluble N, but neither NO 3 nor NH 4 + accumulated in the plant tissue. The longitudinal distribution of N along the fronds is compared to reported variations in C metabolism, and it is concluded that C and N sourcesink relations do not always coincide and bidirectional translocation may occur.  相似文献

The age, growth and mortality of the lanternfish Lampanyctodes hectoris (Gunther) were investigated by examining the otoliths, length-frequency data, and seasonal abundance of fish collected from continental slope waters of eastern Tasmania between April 1984 and June 1985. Although L. hectoris can live to 3 yr old, it has a high annual mortality (79%) and few live past their first year. Growth, described here by a variation of the Von Bertalanffy model, takes place mainly in the first six months of life and only during late spring and summer. The hypothesis of daily deposition of primary growth increments in myctophids was supported by comparing the back-calculated birth dates of daily-aged individuals of L. hectoris with the spawning season of this species.  相似文献

One hundred and six individuals of Sepia officinalis were cultured throughout its life cycle in two different temperature regimes: 13-15°C and 18-20°C. The number of increments in the statoliths and the number of lamellae in the cuttlebone were read at known ages in different individuals. The formation of growth increments in the statoliths was linearly related with individual age, but it was independent of temperature. By comparison between the slope of these linear relationships and the bisecting line, the hypothesis "1 increment=1 day" was validated in individuals as old as 240 days. In specimens older than 240 days, the number of increments was underestimated due to the poor resolution of the later growth increments. The maximum number of days in captivity (420) was about 80% of the life span estimated for this species in the area studied. Preliminary validation was also obtained from statoliths marked with tetracycline. Increments between tetracycline marks were not visible. The mean distance between marks in ten statoliths was 44 µm (Lj). Considering the same distance in statoliths of wild individuals, the mean number of increments counted was 37 (Lj). This result is very close to the 40 days passed between both tetracycline marks. A straight line significantly different for each culture temperature defined the relationship between number of the cuttlebone lamellae and age. The number of lamellae in the cuttlebone does not correspond to the real age. The time necessary for the formation of one lamella was 8DŽ.3 days at 13-15°C, whereas the deposition of one lamella lasted 3.1ǃ.06 days at 18-20°C. In conclusion, the periodicity for lamellar deposition can be defined only if the temperature where the animal lived is considered.  相似文献

By removing males and controlling the rate of water flow past oviposition patches in an experimental area, we showed that female Calopteryx splendens xanthostoma preferred to oviposit in fast flowing water rather than slow flowing water. A series of manipulations revealed the fitness benefits to females for this preference: eggs placed in fast-flowing water developed significantly faster and showed significantly lower mortality than eggs placed in slow-flowing water. A major factor determining this difference was the deposition and growth of encrusting algae which prevented the successful hatching of eggs in slow-flowing water.  相似文献

We have studied growth, energy use and reproduction in 4 mesopelagic fishes and 5 bathypelagic fishes living off Southern California (USA). All of the mesopelagic species underwent diurnal vertical migrations, while none of the bathypelagic species did so. The life histories of these pelagic fishes were compared among themselves and with epipelagic sardines and anchovies studied by others. The epipelagic species had the highest growth rates (estimated from otoliths, expressed in standard length or kilocalories), the mesopelagic species had the lowest growth rates and the bathypelagic species had intermediate growth rates. The relatively rapid growth rates of the bathypelagic fishes were achieved by high relative growth efficiencies made possible by low metabolic rates. Of the species studied, the lifespans of the epipelagic and bathypelagic species ranged from 4 to 8 yr and the lifespans of mesopelagic species from 5 to 8 yr. Data on egg diameters suggest that the mesopelagic species first reproduce in their 3rd yr, while the bathypelagic species do so in their last year. Epipelagic fishes generally have a large size, rapid growth, long life and early, repeated reproduction. Mesopelagic fishes are characterized by small size, slow growth, long life and early, repeated reproduction. Bathypelagic fishes generally have large size, rapid growth, somewhat shorter lives and late reproduction, which is possible a single event. The latter pattern is evidently feasible only in a rather stable environment where juvenile survivorship would always display relatively low variability. Many unusual characteristics of deep-living animals have possibly been selected by factors peculiar to the environment; however, such characteristics are just as likely to have been selected by factors equally present in many other environments, but not expressed there due to masking selective forces. In particular, we have in mind the darkness, stability and homogeneity of the bathypelagic realm as phenomena which represent the effective absence of many selective forces.The first two authors contributed equally and their names are listed in alphabetical order  相似文献
