Mercury (Hg) can be strongly accumulated and biomagnified along aquatic food chain, but the exposure pathway remains little studied. In this study, we quantified the uptake and elimination of both inorganic mercury [as Hg(II)] and methylmercury (as MeHg) in an important farmed freshwater fish, the tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, using 203Hg radiotracer technique. The dissolved uptake rates of both mercury species increased linearly with Hg concentration (tested at ng/L levels), and the uptake rate constant of MeHg was 4 times higher than that of Hg(II). Dissolved uptake of mercury was highly dependent on the water pH and dissolved organic carbon concentration. The dietborne assimilation efficiency of MeHg was 3.7-7.2 times higher than that of Hg(II), while the efflux rate constant of MeHg was 7.1 times lower. The biokinetic modeling results showed that MeHg was the greater contributor to the overall mercury bioaccumulation and dietary exposure was the predominant pathway.  相似文献

195 specimens of higher fungi and their substrata collected in the Hg mining area of M.Amiata and around Siena (Central Italy), were analyzed for their total Hg content. Whereas wood decomposers and many species of mycorrhizal fungi accumulated the metal at a very low rate, some mycorrhizal species and all the humus decomposers may accumulate up to 100 μg.g?1d.w. of Hg and in the least contaminated sites, up to 63 times as much Hg as the substratum. Instead in mineralized areas the concentration factor rarely exceeded 1. The methyl mercury content of 35 species (almost all edible), ranged between 0.01 and 3.7 μg.g?1 d.w..The possible significance of these findings and the toxicologic implications for local con sumers are considered.  相似文献

A single intraperitoneal administration of tin (II) tartrate to albino rats (2 mg Sn++100 g body wt) depressed the levels of hepatic glutathione reductase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, succinic dehydrogenase, reduced glutathione (GSH) and total sulfhydryl contents and led to an elevated level of tin. Serum aminotransferase levels were however, not affected but an increase in serum bilirubin and calcium levels was noticed.Invitro studies showed that tin tartrate upto a concentration of 2 uM did not affect the activity of liver enzymes tested, when the enzyme preparations were incubated with metallic salts during the time of assay. The critical concentration of tin for these parameters was at 5 uM.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper presents a modeling analysis of airborne mercury (Hg) deposited on the Ochlockonee River watershed located in Georgia. Atmospheric deposition monitoring and source attribution data were used along with simulation models to calculate Hg buildup in the subwatershed soils, its subsequent runoff loading and delivery through the tributaries, and its ultimate fate in the mainstem river. The terrestrial model calculated annual watershed yields for total Hg ranging from 0.7 to 1.1 μg/m2. Results suggest that approximately two-thirds of the atmospherically deposited Hg to the watershed is returned to the atmosphere, 10% is delivered to the river, and the rest is retained in the watershed. A check of the aquatic model results against survey data showed a reasonable agreement. Comparing observed and simulated total and methylmercury concentrations gave root mean square error values of 0.26 and 0.10 ng/L, respectively, in the water column, and 5.9 and 1 ng/g, respectively, in the upper sediment layer. Sensitivity analysis results imply that mercury in the Ochlockonee River is dominated by watershed runoff inputs and not by direct atmospheric deposition, and that methylmercury concentrations in the river are determined mainly by net methylation rates in the watershed, presumably in wetted soils and in the wetlands feeding the river.  相似文献

Differences in the accumulation of mercury (Hg) in five species of marine bivalves, including scallops Chlamys nobilis, clams Ruditapes philippinarum, oysters Saccostrea cucullata, green mussels Perna viridis, and black mussels Septifer virgatus, were investigated. The bivalves displayed different patterns of Hg accumulation in terms of the body concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) and total Hg (THg), as well as the ratio of MeHg to THg. Parameters of the biodynamics of the accumulation of Hg(II) and MeHg could reflect the species-dependent Hg concentrations in the bivalves. With the exception of black mussels, we found a significant relationship between the efflux rates of Hg(II) and the THg concentrations in the bivalves. The interspecific variations in the MeHg to THg ratio were largely controlled by the relative difference between the elimination rates of Hg(II) and MeHg. Stable isotope (δ13C) analysis indicated that the five bivalve species had contrasting feeding niches, which may also affect the Hg accumulation.  相似文献

The effect of five concentrations (10 mM, 1 mM, 0.1 mM, 0.01 mM and 0.001 mM) of mercury on the rate of absorption of glucose, fructose, glycine and tryptophan by the intestine of the fresh water murrel Channapunctatus has been studied. Intestinal absorption of these nutrients was also examined in fish exposed to a sublethal concentration (3 μg/l) of mercury for 15 and 30 days. Significant decrease was recorded in the rate of intestinal absorption of all the four nutrients with higher concentrations (10 mM, 1 mM and 0.1 mM) of mercury. 0.01 mM and 0.001 mM of mercury also reduced the transport rate but it was insignificant, except in case of tryptophan, where 0.01 mM of mercury also produced significant decrease. Exposure of fish by bath to mercury also resulted in significant decrease in the intestinal transport rate of all the four nutrients after 30 days.  相似文献

Five mercury (Hg) chemistry models are compared using the same data set for model initialisation. All five models include gas-phase oxidation of Hg(0) to Hg(II) (except for one model), fast reduction–oxidation aqueous reactions between Hg(0) and Hg(II), and adsorption of Hg(II) species to soot particles within droplets. However, the models differ in their detailed treatments of these processes. Consequently, the 48-h simulations reveal similarities but also significant discrepancies among the models. For the simulation that included all Hg species (i.e., Hg(0), Hg(II) and Hg(p)) as well as soot in the initial conditions, the maximum simulated Hg(II) aqueous concentrations ranged from 55 to 148 ng l−1 whereas the minimum concentrations ranged from 20 to 110 ng l−1. These results suggest that further experimental work is critically needed to reduce the current uncertainties in the formulation of Hg chemistry models.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the risk-benefit associated with canned sardine consumption, considering the selenium, the mercury and the methylmercury contents and the Se:Hg molar ratio and the Se-health benefit value (HBV) index. In this study, 63 canned sardine samples were purchased worldwide and for the determination of selenium and mercury species, the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and thermal decomposition and amalgamation atomic absorption spectrometry were employed. The mean results obtained for the Brazilian samples varied between 12.6 and 65.5?μg kg?1 for Hg; <3.7 and 45.4?μg kg?1 for methylmercury; 310 and 1370?μg kg?1 for Se. The MeHg/Hg ratio showed that the most toxic forms of Hg (MeHg) is predominant in 52 and 39% of the Brazilian samples conserved in tomato sauce and in oil, respectively. Nevertheless, the Se-HBV index and the Hg:Se and Se:Hg molar ratios indicated that the selenium content in canned sardine samples is enough to provide a protective effect on the Hg species.  相似文献

Between 1950 and 1963 approximately 11 million kilograms of mercury (Hg) were used at the Oak Ridge Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12 NSC) for lithium isotope separation processes. About 3% of the Hg was lost to the air, soil and rock under facilities, and East Fork Poplar Creek (EFPC) which originates in the plant site. Smaller amounts of Hg were used at other Oak Ridge facilities with similar results. Although the primary Hg discharges from Y-12 NSC stopped in 1963, small amounts of Hg continue to be released into the creek from point sources and diffuse contaminated soil and groundwater sources within Y-12 NSC. Mercury concentration in EFPC has decreased 85% from ∼2000 ng/L in the 1980s. In general, methylmercury concentrations in water and in fish have not declined in response to improvements in water quality and exhibit trends of increasing concentration in some cases.  相似文献

Mercury levels in fish, water and sediments were determined during 1982 along a 600 km stretch of the North Saskatchewan River (NSR) in the province of Alberta. Migratory fish species such as goldeye, walleye and sauger in the NSR were found to contain total mercury levels ranging from 0.104 to 1.553 mg/kg (mean ≧ 0.5 mg/kg). Northern pike, white sucker, longnose sucker and northern redhorse sucker had total mercury levels ranging from 0.003 to 1.003 mg/kg (mean < 0.5 mg/kg) Regression analysis of the data revealed that neither the sex of the fish nor the location of the sampling site contributed significantly to the mercury burden in fish in the entire study section of the river. Sediment analysis showed a low and more or less uniform concentrations of mercury in Alberta (≦0.1 mg/kg). The total mercury in NSR water averaged 0.09 μg/L in upstream Edmonton and was found to elevate in downstream NSR (0.22 μg/L) near industrial discharge sites and agricultural runoff areas (mean = 0.20 μg/L). Calculated partition coefficients seem to group the fish into two categories, (i) goldeye, walleye and sauger (bioconcentration factor [BCF] =3?3.7×103 and (ii) northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker and northern redhorse sucker (BCF=1.2?1.8×103).  相似文献

Population of microorganisms able to degrade 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate) were estimated in 4 non-rhizosphere and 5 rhizosphere soils in Natal by a most probable number (MPN) method using 2,4-D-bromocresol purple media to show 2,4-D degradation with the formation of HC1. Confirmation of herbicide degradation in acid 2,4-D tubes was required by subculturing into fresh 2,4-D-and control indicator media. The MPN estimates of 2,4-D-degrading organisms per g of corresponding rhizosphere/control soils were 6100/212 with African clover (Trifolium africanum L.) soils, and 46400178, 1560001480 and 407006170 with sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) soils. The high, stimulated populations of 2,4-D-degrading microorganisms in the sugarcane rhizospheres suggest the possibility of rapid degradaton in the rhizosphere as an additional mechanism for the protection of certain plants against soil-applied herbicides.  相似文献

Significantly higher contents of mercury were found in fungi growing in the vicinity of a large Finnish chlor-alkali plant than in a control area. The highest concentrations (72–200 ppm dry wt) were found in Agaricus-species. The mercury contents in mycorrhizal fungi did not generally exceed the Finnish safety limit of 0.8 ppm.  相似文献

A mixture of ten metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Hg, Ni, Se and Zn) at the Great Lakes Water Quality Objective levels was found to reduce the primary productivity of four cultured freshwater algae (Scenedesmus, Chlorella, Anabaena and Navicula) as well as natural phytoplankton from Lake Ontario water. The metal mixture also caused a reduction in the reproduction and transport of an amino acid analogue (α-aminoisobutyric acid) by Ankistrodesmus. The depuration and exchange of the amino acid analogue were not affected by the metal mixture. The nitrogenase activity of Anabaena was, however, reduced in the presence of the metal mixture.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were carried out to study the influence of temperature (24, 28 and 30 °C) and pH (1–10) on organic mercury (CH3HgCl) transfer and accumulation in an experimental ecotoxicological model. We followed the evolution of CH3HgCl in a basic model (water+air) by varying temperature and pH. In a second step, we completed the model by adding sediment and fish. We added CH3HgCl to water at the beginning of each experiment which was repeated at least three times. Results demonstrated that mercury was released from methylmercury into the air regardless of water pH and its concentration in the air increased with increasing pH. By contrast, in presence of sediment, almost all the mercury was fixed onto the sediment and no mercury was traced in air or in water. Interestingly, in the presence of sediment, the life span of fish under methylmercury exposure lasted longer despite their higher mercury body level content at their death. These results indicate that water is a bad exposure indicator for aquatic pollution. In case of chronic pollution, sediments, fish and aquatic plants are more appropriate indicators.  相似文献

Water solubilities (SW) determined by the HPLC generator column method are reported for a series of chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) with SW ranging from 0.4 ng/L (ppt) for octa-chlorodibenzo-p-dioxin to 430 ng/L for 1,2,3,7-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin at 20°C. A correlation is demonstrated between SW and HPLC capacity factors (k′) for these extremely hydrophobic compounds, allowing calculation of SW of PCDDs from k′ and melting point data.  相似文献
