Effect of Introduced Crayfish and Mosquitofish on California Newts   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
One goal of conservation biology is to explain population declines. We present field survey data and experimental evidence that implicate introduced predators as a possible cause of decline in the California newt ( Taricha torosa ). In 1994 and 1995 we surveyed 10 streams in the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California for amphibians. These streams contained California newts when surveyed between 1981 and 1986. Of the 10 streams surveyed in 1994, three contained introduced mosquitofish ( Gambusia affinis ) and/or crayfish ( Procambarus clarkii ). These three streams contained no California newt eggs, larvae, or adults. The seven streams without introduced predators contained California newts. We conducted laboratory and field experiments to determine if California newt larvae and egg masses are susceptible to predation by mosquitofish and crayfish. Results from these experiments indicate that crayfish consume California newt egg masses and that both mosquitofish and crayfish consume larval newts. In 24-hour field experiments, no newt larvae survived in crayfish enclosures, and only 13% of the larvae survived with mosquitofish. Newt larvae are known to have antipredator adaptations for native predators. Apparently, these adaptations are not adequate for coexistence with introduced crayfish or mosquitofish. Heavy rains in 1995 removed introduced crayfish from one stream. We found newt egg masses, larvae, and adults in that stream the following spring. This same stream showed no evidence of California newts when crayfish were present in matched-date surveys in 1994. These experiments and surveys present evidence that predation by mosquitofish and crayfish may cause localized decline of newts in mountain streams of southern California. Understanding the effects of nonnative species is an important step in preventing detrimental introductions in the future.  相似文献

Although concern for biodiversity and its conservation originated in the biological sciences, with growing international interest an increasing number of interest groups are claiming standing in discussions of the best ways to conserve biodiversity. One of these groups, formed by various indigenous peoples and their advocates, has repeatedly defended its claim to standing by stating that indigenous peoples are well equipped to conserve biodiversity. These claims have had far-reaching consequences, as millions of hectares of Amazonian forest have been deeded to indigenous groups, at least partially on the reasoning that such actions would conserve biodiversity. In this paper, we bring to the attention of the community of conservation biologists a group representing 229 native Amazonian groups comprising 1.2 million people in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil, and Colombia. In a document entitled "To the Community of Concerned Environmentalists," this group of indigenous peoples proposes a broad template for cooperation between conservation biologists and the indigenous peoples of the Amazon Basin. Following reiteration of the statement, we discuss the fact that these two groups define biodiversity and its conservation in different ways, with indigenous peoples focusing more on preservation of general habitat characteristics and exclusion of extensive habitat alteration. We conclude that the interests of conservation biologists may not be completely compatible with the agenda of indigenous peoples and their advocates but that by cooperating valuable time is being bought by both sides.  相似文献

Abstract: Mosquitofish ( Gambusia affinis ) are distributed by many mosquito control programs because of their broad habitat tolerance and because they are considered by some to be effective mosquito predators. As a result, mosquitofish have become established as an exotic species in numerous perennial streams in the Santa Monica Mountains within the last 10–15 years. Previous studies have found that mosquitofish prey heavily on California newt (   Taricha torosa ) larvae that inhabit mountain streams. We found Pacific treefrog (   Hyla regilla ) tadpoles in the stomachs of 65% of stream-caught mosquitofish. In both laboratory and field experiments, we found that mosquitofish preyed heavily on treefrog tadpoles, even when high densities of mosquito larvae were presented as alternative prey. Thus, despite apparent high densities of Pacific treefrog populations, our experiments suggest that introduced mosquitofish may negatively affect stream-breeding H. regilla in the Santa Monica Mountains.  相似文献

Functional Homogenization Effect of Urbanization on Bird Communities   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Abstract:  We studied the community richness and dynamics of birds in landscapes recently affected by urbanization to test the prediction that biotic communities living in degraded landscapes are increasingly composed of generalist species. We analyzed bird communities in 657 plots monitored by the French Breeding Bird Survey from 2001 to 2005, accounting for the probability of species detection and spatial autocorrelation. We used an independent land-cover program to assess urbanization intensity in each FBBS plot, from 1992 to 2002. We found that urbanization induced community homogenization and that populations of specialist species became increasingly unstable with increasing urbanization of the landscape. Our results emphasize that urbanization has a substantial impact on the spatial component of communities and highlight the destabilizing effect of urbanization on communities over time. These results illustrate that urbanization may be a strong driving force in functional community composition and that measuring community homogenization is a powerful tool in the assessment of the effects of landscape changes and thus aides sustainable urban planning.  相似文献

设置非转基因抗虫棉棉田以及分别种植7和10 a转Bt基因抗虫棉的棉田3个处理,于2007--2008年棉花苗期、蕾期、花铃期和吐絮期采样测定了土壤中5个微生物种类的数量,以监测长期种植转Bt基因抗虫棉对土壤微生物群落生物多样性的影响.结果表明,3种类型棉田土壤细菌、真菌、固氮菌、反硝化细菌、亚硝化细菌数量以及微生物多样性指数在整个棉花生长期内变化趋势基本一致,其中,在棉花蕾期各种微生物数量达到高峰.与种植非转基因抗虫棉相比,不同种植年限转Bt基因抗虫棉对土壤细菌、真菌、固氮菌、反硝化细菌、亚硝化细菌数量和微生物多样性指数都无显著影响,但随着采样时间的不同,3种类型棉田土壤各类微生物数量和多样性指数都呈明显季节变化.  相似文献

Effect of Human Disturbance on Bee Communities in a Forested Ecosystem   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Abstract:  It is important for conservation biologists to understand how well species persist in human-dominated ecosystems because protected areas constitute a small fraction of the Earth's surface and because anthropogenic habitats may offer more opportunities for conservation than has been previously thought. We investigated how an important functional group, pollinators (bees; Hymenoptera: Apiformes), are affected by human land use at the landscape and local scales in southern New Jersey (U.S.A.). We established 40 sites that differed in surrounding landscape cover or local habitat type and collected 2551 bees of 130 species. The natural habitat in this ecosystem is a forested, ericaceous heath. Bee abundance and species richness within forest habitat decreased, not increased, with increasing forest cover in the surrounding landscape. Similarly, bee abundance was greater in agricultural fields and suburban and urban developments than in extensive forests, and the same trend was found for species richness. Particular species groups that might be expected to show greater sensitivity to habitat loss, such as floral specialists and bees of small or large body size, did not show strong positive associations with forest habitat. Nevertheless, 18 of the 130 bee species studied were positively associated with extensive forest. One of these species is a narrow endemic that was last seen in 1939. Our results suggest that at least in this system, moderate anthropogenic land use may be compatible with the conservation of many, but not all, bee species.  相似文献

Growth and mortality rates of the gastropod Cerithium nodulosum Bruguière were investigated by repetitive mark-and-recapture censuses for the inner and middle reef flat subpopulations of Pago Bay, Guam, from February to October 1975. Overall population density was about 2 individuals per 100 m2 in October. Juveniles (28 to 75 mm shell length) grew at mean rates of from 2.3 to 4.6 mm per month, with great (average coefficient of variation, CV: 32% of the mean) individual variations within the cohorts. The adult stage, which ceases growing in length after forming characteristic shell apertures, was reached within 3 years. Individual adult sizes varied markedly within each subpopulation; the mean shell length was 76.3 mm (standard deviation, SD=6.2, N=129) for the inner and middle reef flat subpopulation and 84.3 mm (SD=6.6; N=127) for the outer reef flat subpopulation. The difference in mean adult shell length between the two subpopulations was highly significant (0.01 level). Mortality rates were estimated from the slopes of regression lines fitted to the catch curves. 为了解诺氟沙星在环境中的残留对土壤微生物的影响,借助BIOLOG法对诺氟沙星作用下土壤微生物的碳源利用及代谢功能多样性进行了研究.研究发现,用药后d 7、d 21、d 35,用药组(诺氟沙星含量1μg g-1、10μg g-1、100μgg-1)BIOLOG微平板上平均每孔颜色变化率(Average well color development,AWCD)均低于对照组;用药d 7,1μg g-1、10μg g-1、100μg g-1组土壤微生物丰富度指数与多样性指数显著低于(P<0.05)对照组,d 21,10μg g-1、100μg g-1组与对照组差异显著,d 35仅100μg g-1组与对照组差异显著.结果表明,诺氟沙星影响了土壤微生物群落的碳代谢功能,包括代谢强度和代谢多样性,但不同浓度的诺氟沙星对土壤微生物群落代谢功能的影响也不相同.100μg g-1的诺氟沙星在用药的前期和后期均显著影响土壤微生物群落的碳代谢功能,土壤中诺氟沙星积累到该浓度可能对土壤微生物群落碳代谢功能产生难以逆转的长期影响.  相似文献

Tropical forest ecosystems are threatened by habitat conversion and other anthropogenic actions. Timber production forests can augment the conservation value of primary forest reserves, but studies of logging effects often yield contradictory findings and thus inhibit efforts to develop clear conservation strategies. We hypothesized that much of this variability reflects a common methodological flaw, simple pseudoreplication, that confounds logging effects with preexisting spatial variation. We reviewed recent studies of the effects of logging on biodiversity in tropical forests (n = 77) and found that 68% were definitively pseudoreplicated while only 7% were definitively free of pseudoreplication. The remaining proportion could not be clearly categorized. In addition, we collected compositional data on 7 taxa in 24 primary forest research plots and systematically analyzed subsets of these plots to calculate the probability that a pseudoreplicated comparison would incorrectly identify a treatment effect. Rates of false inference (i.e., the spurious detection of a treatment effect) were >0.5 for 2 taxa, 0.3–0.5 for 2 taxa, and <0.3 for 3 taxa. Our findings demonstrate that tropical conservation strategies are being informed by a body of literature that is rife with unwarranted inferences. Addressing pseudoreplication is essential for accurately assessing biodiversity in logged forests, identifying the relative merits of specific management practices and landscape configurations, and effectively balancing conservation with timber production in tropical forests. Changing land use in the tropics has resulted in vast areas of damaged and degraded lands where biodiversity has been reduced. The majority of research on biodiversity has been focused on population and community dynamics and has rarely considered the ecosystem processes that are intimately related. We present a framework for examining the effects of changes in biodiversity on ecosystem function in natural, managed, and damaged tropical forests. Using a whole-ecosystem approach, the framework identifies key nutrient and energy cycling processes and critical junctures or pathways, termed interfaces, where resources are concentrated and transferred between the biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. Processes occurring at these interfaces, and the organisms or attributes participating in these processes, exert a strong influence on ecosystem structure. We use examples from Puerto Rico, Southern China, Dominica, and Nicaragua to illustrate how the functional diversity framework can be applied to critically examine the effects of changes in biodiversity on ecosystem function, and the relative success or failure of rehabilitation strategies. The few available data suggest that functional diversity, and not just species richness, is important in maintaining the integrity of nutrient and energy fluxes. High species richness, however, may increase ecosystem resiliency following disturbance by increasing the number of alternative pathways for the flow of resources. We suggest ways in which the framework of functional diversity can be used to design research to examine the effects of changes in biodiversity on ecosystem processes and in the design and evaluation of ecosystem management and land rehabilitation projects in the tropics.  相似文献
