Summary The tropical South American teleost Eigenmannia lineata showed a spontaneous preference for the female type, compared with the male type, of its sexually dimorphic, weak-electric organ discharge (EOD). Female and male EODs differ in waveform and harmonic content. An isolated fish was simultaneously stimulated with digitally synthesized natural male and female EODs of equal peak-to-peak amplitudes, at ±35 Hz frequency difference centered on its stable resting discharge frequency. The stimulus dipoles were arranged symmetrically to the right and left of the fish's hiding place. All stimulus conditions were permuted at random sequence. Among 11 fish tested, 8 showed a statistically significant preference for one stimulus, the female type, as measured by the amount of time a fish spent close to a stimulus dipole (P<0.05 in each fish, two-tailed). Thus female EODs rather than male EODs were more attractive to adult and juvenile fish of both sexes. It was also concluded that E. lineata is capable of discriminating female from male EODs by a complex sensory capacity requiring neither amplitude nor frequency cues. The EOD waveform changed very little within the ecological range of water conductivities (approximately 10–100 S·cm-1); the P/N-ratio (a waveform character based on zerocrossing intervals) depended only weakly, but significantly, on conductivity (negative correlation in all four fish). Also, the effect of temperature on EOD waveform was very weak: Q 10-values of the P/N-ratio were below but close to 1 in all fish (27±5°C). Thus, it can be concluded that the EOD waveform is remarkably stable within widely changing conditions-even beyond the variation found in the field-and is therefore potentially useful as a social cue.  相似文献

Examination of the diet of two sympatric species of seastar, Bathybiaster vexillifer and Plutonaster bifrons from 2200 m depth in the Rockall Trough, NE Atlantic Ocean (57°18'N; 10°28'W), suggested that diet may determine the different reproductive patterns found between these two species. In the non-seasonally breeding B. vexillifier, the diet showed a high Shannon-Wiener prey diversity index, the dominant prey being the irregular echinoid Hemiaster expergitus together with a variety of prosobranch gastropods and protobranch bivalves. By contrast, the prey diversity in the seasonally breeding P. bifrons was significantly lower than that of B. vexillifer. In addition, organic carbon content in the sediment residue in the stomachs of P. bifrons displayed a seasonal cycle, while no such seasonality was detected in B. vexillifer. The stomachs of P. bifrons also contained a higher proportion of scavenged material, including the seasonally available remains of mesopelagic blue whiting. These data, together with Bathysnap (time-lapse camera) observations of feeding behaviour in both species, suggest that B. vexillifer is a predator feeding deep in the sediment, whereas P. bifrons feeds close to the sediment surface where it is affected by the seasonal availability of phytodetritus and fish carcasses.  相似文献

In ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) urine deposition can be combined with two different tail configurations: (i) tail held up in an evident display (urinate tail-up, UT-up); (ii) tail slightly raised to avoid its impregnation with urine (urinate tail-down, UT-down). We used both signaller- and receiver-based approaches to search for functional differences between these two kinds of urine deposition. We predicted that UT-up might be a complex signal combining olfactory and visual cues. We carried out observations and scent tests on four captive groups of ring-tailed lemurs. Group members sniffed/licked UT-up scents more frequently than UT-down ones. Moreover, UT-up showed peak levels during the mating season whereas UT-down did not. These findings suggest that urine can play a role in intra-group reproductive communication. Lemurs more frequently performed UT-up in a few drops and UT-down in streams. Recognition experiments clearly showed that individuals can discriminate between urine of their own group and urine from a foreign group (a necessary prerequisite for the use of urine in inter-group communication). The possible function of UT-up in inter-troop communication was supported by the higher frequency of this pattern along a fence separating two of the study groups. Moreover, in the presence of a dummy, the frequency of UT-up increased significantly. In conclusion, UT-up is a complex signal with multiple characteristics. By using different sensory channels, UT-up provides different types of information (location and signaller quality) and contains multiple messages directed both at group-members and neighbouring groups....to conceal this letter, the Minister had resorted to the comprehensive and sagacious expedient of not attempting to conceal it at all (from the Purloined letter E. The growth rate of mackerel, Scomber scombrus, larvae was calculated by analysing mean cohort length over time. The study took place on the central spawning ground of mackcrel in the Celtic Sea (Great Sole Bank) in April 1986. In order to minimize horizontal catch variability, repeated small-scale sampling with the Mocness plankton net was undertaken close to a satellite-tracked drifting buoy during a period of 78 h. Eighteen samples from nine hauls distributed over the whole sampling period were considered. One hundred larvae per sample were measured using a semi-automatic method. The proportion of larger larvae was significantly higher in night catches than in day catches. Independently calculated growth rates were 0.18 mm d-1 for day catches and 0.14 mm d-1 for night catches. This difference was not statistically significant. However, confidence in the calculation of growth rate, computed from night sampling, was much higher than that for day sampling. This may result as an effect of avoidance behaviour by larvae in daylight. Thus, night sampling seems to be a more reliable tool in the study of larval growth and should be used more extensively than daylight sampling.This paper was presented at the Early life history of fish symposium, Bergen, October 3 to 5, 1988  相似文献

An interdisciplinary research program (Kombiniertes Oberflächenfilmprojekt KOFF), in the North Sea area about 75 km west of the Island of Sylt, is directed towards gaining further knowledge on the biological importance of the natural surface film. The investigations include the water body below the film as well as dynamic processes at the surface. Persistence of calm weather conditions (cloudless sky) before and during the investigations permitted observations of the diurnal species-specific vertical migration of Dinophyceae. Two groups could be distinguished: (1) Prorocentrum micans and Ceratium furca; (2) C. horridum, C. macroceros and C. fusus. The active accumulation of P. micans in the slick was verified by a significant correlation coefficient—linearly correlated with the time of day. The role of organic solutes in the osmotic adjustment processes of the marine macroalga Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Link was investigated in 1986, using fresh samples collected from mid-shore rock pools at Tayport, Fife, Scotland. Natural-abundance 13C nuclear magnetic-resonance spectroscopy revealed -dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) to be the only major low molecular weight organic osmolyte present. However, on transfer to a hypersaline medium (300% sea water; 100%=35 S), tissue sucrose and proline levels increased markedly, while DMSP remained constant. Recovery of optimal photosynthetic activity and increases in inorganic ion levels occurred over a similar time scale to the changes in sucrose and proline (within 48 h), indicating that these two organic solutes are involved in hyperosmotic adjustment in E. intestinalis while DMSP is not. Freshly-collected plants transferred to 300% sea water medium in the dark showed no significant increases in organic osmolytes. In contrast, starch-enrichment (16 d continuous illumination) led to enhanced synthesis of sucrose and proline in the light and in darkness, but tissue DMSP levels showed no variation throughout. These observations suggest that DMSP is not involved in short-term osmoacclimation in E. intestinalis.  相似文献

Shell microstructure and mantle behaviour relating to shell cementation was studied on adult oysters,Crassostrea gigas, Saccostrea mordax, andS. kegaki (collected from Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, in 1989 and 1990). At the place of cementation, the prismatic structure of the outermost shell layer is modified to a significant structure. This structure, named the ridge-and-furrow structure, consists of calcified ridges a few microns wide separated by furrows, both arranged parallel to the shell growth direction. The furrows are ultimately filled by shell material. The prismatic and ridge-and-furrow structures gradually merge in a transitional area where an intermediate type of the two structures occurs. The small size of the crystal units of the ridges and furrows is due to the close distribution of crystal seeds, especially close to pre-existing ridges. This is the basis of the difference between the ridge-and-furrow and the prismatic structures and also makes the former structure functional for cementation, in contrast to the latter. At the site of ongoing shell cementation, the mantle margin adpresses the shell margin onto the substrate. Experiments show that this pressing action is essential for cementation and probably also for the formation of the ridge-and-furrow structure. Even the right valve, which oysters nerve use to cement in natural conditions, forms the ridge-and-furrow structure and cements to the substrate if the pressing action of its mantle margin is induced under artificial conditions. Behavioural changes probably led oysters to switch from byssal attachment to cementation within a short time span when they acquired their cementing habit.  相似文献

Summary 1. Echolocation and foraging behavior of the horseshoe bats Rhinolophus ferrumequinum and R. hipposideros feeding under natural conditions are described. 2. The calls of both species consisted predominantly of a long CF segment, often initiated and terminated by brief FM sweeps of substantial bandwidth. 3. R. hipposideros typically flew close to vegetation, and fed by aerial hawking, gleaning and by pouncing on prey close to the ground. R. hipposideros called with a CF segment close to 112 kHz which is the second harmonic of the vocalization; its calls included low intensity primary harmonics, and had prominent initial and terminal FM sweeps of considerable bandwidth. When searching for prey on the wing it had longer interpulse intervals than R. ferrumequinum, but emitted shorter pulses at a higher repetition rate; overall it had a similar duty cycle to R. ferrumequinum. 4. R. ferrumequinum, calling with a CF segment close to 83 kHz, also used harmonics other than the dominant secondary in its calls, and modified its echolocation according to ecological conditions. This species showed certain parallels with R. rouxi of Asia. It was observed feeding by aerial hawking and by flycatching. When scanning for prey from a perch (perch hunting), calls were of shorter duration, and interpulse intervals were on average longer, than when bats were flying. Mean duty cycle was longer in flight, and the bandwidths and frequency sweep rates of the FM segments in the calls increased in comparison with perched bats. 5. FM information may facilitate determination of target range and the location and nature of obstacles; it may also be involved in the interpretation of echoes and the detection of moving targets among clutter. Population characteristics, individual life-history variables, feeding and vertical distribution of the mesopelagic fish Müller's pearlside Maurolicus muelleri collected in 1990 in Masfjorden, western Norway, are reported as well as environmental variables from the fjord. Minimum size at maturity was far smaller than reported from previous investigations in the same region. Fecundity was size-dependent and total egg numbers were higher than reported from other investigations of M. muelleri world wide, while the number of maturing eggs was far lower than observed in the same region earlier. Food concentration in the fjord was an order of magnitude lower than previous early summer observations, and several factors indicated that feeding opportunities may have been low for a long period. Daily feeding rate (g prey g-1 fish) decreased with increasing fish size. These observations fit well with a model of maximizing fitness by means of a flexible size at maturity. Minimum age at maturity seems to be achieved at the expense of fecundity. M. muelleri was concentrated in a 20 to 30 m deep sound scattering layer (SSL). The SSL stayed close to the surface during the night and at 100 to 180 m during the daytime. The vertical position of the SSL varied instantaneously with changes in surface light intensity, remaining at 10-3 to 10-4 mol m-1 s-1 at the top of the SSL. Stomach fullness was highest during the night; feeding intensity seems to have been peaked at dusk. Cladocerans were the main prey ranked by number, copepods by biomass. Intake of large copepods increased with fish size.  相似文献

Observations were made on 2 beaches during the premonsoon period (January to March) when conditions were relatively stable. The beach below the berm at Cochin is 14 m wide with a slope of 1 in 8.5, and at Shertallai 40 m wide with a slope of 1 in 16. The well-sorted sand has a mean particle size of 275 at Cochin and 175 at Shertallai. The amount of chlorophyll attached to sand grains is very small. Chlorophyll in the water varies between 0.9 and 13.0 g/l. Carbon in the sand amounts to 210 to 630 g/g, and in the water to 355 to 3660 g/l. Throughout observations, the water temperature remained about 31°C, but on the dry sand surface it reached 50°C. Fauna zonation on the 2 beaches is similar to that of other tropical beaches; crabs of the genus Ocypode and the isopod Eurydice sp. occur at high water mark, the polychaetes of the genera Glycera, Onuphis, Scoloplos and Lumbrinereis in the mid-intertidal region and below; the tidal migrants Bullia melanoides (Gastropoda), Donax incarnatus and D. spiculum (Bivalvia) and Emerita holthuisi (Crustacea) inhabit the wash zone of the surf. The average biomass is 0.73 g carbon/m2 at Shertallai and 0.85 g C/m2 at Cochin, where fewer species are present. This compares with a value of 0.63 g C/m2 for a sandy beach on the west coast of Scotland.  相似文献

Pollimyrus adspersus discriminates the individually variable waveforms of Electric Organ Discharges (EODs) of conspecifics of only 150–250 s duration. We examined: (1) the discrimination threshold for artificially generated EODs of similar waveform, (2) the mechanism of signal analysis (spectral vs temporal) present, by determining the discrimination between different waveforms of identical amplitude spectra, and (3) the threshold field intensity and reach of discrimination. The triphasic P. adspersus EOD waveform was artificially generated by superimposing two Gaussians, one wide, the second narrow, inverted, and of threefold amplitude. The natural variability among individual EOD waveforms was simulated by phase-shifting one Gaussian relative to the other. The symmetrical waveform where the peaks of the two Gaussians coincided was used as a reference (phase shift=0, rewarded stimulus S+). Results were: (1) in food-rewarded conditioning experiments, trained fish (N=7) detected a phase-shift in artificial EOD stimuli as low as 2 s (N=2 fish), 6 s (N=1) and 10 s (N=1). (2) All fish tested (N=3) discriminated between artificial EODs of identical amplitude spectra but different waveforms (hence, different phase spectra), demonstrating a temporal mechanism of signal analysis. (3) The maximum reach of waveform discrimination was 130 cm at 4.9 Vp-p/cm and 100 S/cm water conductivity (test signal generated at natural amplitude), that is, similar to the reach of EOD detection. Therefore, among the three kinds of electroreceptor organ present in mormyrids, we consider Knollenorgane the relevant sensory organs for EOD waveform discrimination.Communicated by J. The compound eye of Nephrops norvegicus (L.) is of the superposition type, well-adapted to the low levels of light prevailing at the sea bed during the activity periods of the species. Only the proximal retinal shielding pigment responds to light, the distal retinal shielding pigment being in the dark-adapted position at all times. The response of the proximal pigment appears to vary seasonally. Field observations compared light intensity at the sea bed with the numbers of N. norvegicus caught by trawl at various times of day in the Irish Sea in summer and winter. Laboratory experiments were combined with these field data to indicate that light is an important modulator of locomotor activity in this species.  相似文献

Many group-living species produce frequent vocalisations when foraging, but the function of these food-associated calls is often difficult to divine. I investigated the kek call of the cooperatively breeding green woodhoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus), a species in which individuals have preferred foraging techniques dependent on their bill size. Individuals called at a greater rate (1) in foraging compared to non-foraging situations, and (2) in groups containing potential foraging competitors (i.e. individuals that foraged using the same preferred techniques). I therefore asked whether the kek call is used to recruit conspecific foragers or whether it acts as a vocal signal of foraging niche and mediates foraging competition. Foragers that were vocalising were no more likely to be approached than those that were silent, and individuals gained no foraging advantage from the close proximity of another group member. Thus, keks are unlikely to be used to recruit conspecifics. Instead, they appear to regulate spacing between potential foraging competitors. Although an individual forager was equally likely to be closely approached by all other group members, it increased its calling rate only in response to potential foraging competitors. This increase in calling rate resulted in the approaching individual moving away, thus maintaining some separation between individuals that forage in the same way. Herein we present a campaign dedicated to the detection and the characterization of Gravity Waves (GW) in the Earth’s atmosphere in relation to the generation of Optical Turbulence (OT). The observations took place in France from 17 to 24 July 2002 at the Haute Provence Observatory (OHP) and simultaneously at the Sirene Observatory, some 20 km apart. From both sites, several balloons were launched that measured the classical PTU-Wind profiles and additionally the structure constant of the temperature field vertical profiles. A Generalized Scidar (GS) technique was implemented at the 1.93 m-diameter OHP telescope, providing profiles every minute. From our observations, a significant amount of GW activity was observed at both sites, but without clear evidence of correlation between the two sites. It seems from our observations that a wide spectrum of GW is present at a given altitude and that this could result in a lack of correlation between observations made from two sites 20 km apart. Most GW are non-stationary with long horizontal wavelengths (λ ∼ 100–200 km), kilometric vertical wavelengths (λ ~ 0.5–2 km) and long intrinsic period (T ~ 2–15 h). They belong in the category of “hydrostatic rotating or non-rotating waves”. Layers of optical turbulence detected by balloons and the Scidar technique correlate well with regions of GW activity. Gut-evacuation rates were compared for feeding and non-feeding Calanus marshallae collected near Yaquina Bay, Oregon (44°37N; 124°04W) from June 1986 through May 1987. Evacuation rates were measured at four concentrations of Thalassiosira weissflogii from the decline of gut-pigment fluorescence following transfer of copepods to filtered seawater and from the loss of cells labelled with 68-germanium, a radioactive analog of silicon. There was no significant difference between gut-evacuation rates of feeding and non-feeding copepods over both short-term (20 min) and long-term (90 min) evacuation times. Furthermore there was no difference between rates obtained using either pigment or 68Ge as tracers of gut food-passage. These results are discussed in the light of possible dilution of tracer in the guts of feeding copepods due to mixing with unlabelled food. Gut-evacuation rates measured at food concentrations ranging from 500 to 4000 cells ml-1 were not significantly different, regardless of the technique employed.  相似文献

Remote videography was used to investigate relationships between biological similarity and distance in Moreton Bay, Australia at site (1 km) and local (10 km) scales, and for separate biotic groups. Numerical analysis using Mantels tests to compare distance and similarity matrices showed that at both scales there was a negative correlation between similarity and distance, in that sites further apart were less similar than sites close together. The relationship, although significant (p <0.001), was quite weak (R2=5%) at the site-scale, with no significant (ANOVA with Tukeys pairwise comparisons, p >0.05) decline in similarity up to distances of 2.1–2.6 km. At the local-scale, between-site similarity was high (mean Bray-Curtis similarity >30% for 4th root transformed data) at scales of 10 km or less, and declined markedly with increasing distance. Scales of similarity for different broad taxonomic and functional groups within Moreton Bay were broadly consistent between groups and with the complete dataset. There was evidence of patchiness in the distributions of seagrass and anthozoans at scales less than 16 km. In other biotic groups there was an essentially monotonic decline in similarity with distance. The study showed that the spatial classification approach to habitat mapping is valid in this case, and that site spacing of less than 10 km is necessary to capture important components of biological similarity. This study documents the effects of short-term (24h) sublethal copper exposures on undirected swimming activity and photobehavior of Balanus improvisus stage II nauplii. All Cu treatments were static, with temperature and salinity conditions at 20°C and 15 or 30. The 24h LC 50 estimate for Cu is 88 ppb at 15 and >200 ppb at 30. Sub-lethal Cu concentrations cause reductions in swimming speed, which decrease progressively with increasing Cu dose. At 50 ppb Cu, this was significant primarily at light intensities below the phototactic threshold. At higher Cu concentrations, significant reductions in mean linear velocity occurred at most light intensities tested. At 30, 50 and 100 ppb Cu also reduce the positive phototactic response and 150 ppb Cu causes reversal of phototaxis at optimal intensities. Photokinesis is reduced at 100 ppb Cu and disappears at 150 ppb Cu. At 15, the behavioral effects of 50 ppb Cu resemble those occurring with 150 ppb Cu at 30. Swimming speed and photobehavior show promise as sensitive behavioral indicators of copper toxicity. Additional research is required to determine if these responses apply to a broad range of pollutants and to other planktonic organisms. This study quantifies the manner in which Australian fur seals, Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus, use their prey in a spatial and temporal context. We analysed 977 scat and 66 regurgitate samples collected from Tasmanian breeding colonies and haul-outs between 1994 and 2000. Diagnostic prey remains identified in the scats represented 35 fish taxa and 8 cephalopod taxa. The main taxa identified in scats, where frequency of occurrence was 10%, were leatherjacket species (family Monocanthidae), redbait (Emmelichthys nitidus), barracouta (Thyrsites atun), jack mackerel (Trachurus declivis) and red cod (Pseudophysis bachus). Regurgitates were dominated by cephalopods, primarily Goulds squid (Nototodarus gouldi), Octopus maorum, O. berrima/pallidus and Sepia apama. Discriminant function analyses indicated that there were generally no significant differences in the composition of the diet between colonies within a year, suggesting that prey distribution is fairly uniform throughout Bass Strait at those time scales. The diet at breeding colonies, however, exhibited significant inter- and intra-annual variation, determined by the presence of several key taxa, such as barracouta and a species of scorpionfish (family Scorpaenidae). The diet composition also varied regionally, between Bass Strait and southern Tasmania in spring 1999 and autumn 2000, with redbait, barracouta and a species of scorpionfish identified as the main taxa contributing to this difference. Previous nutritional models for adults of the lucinid bivalve Lucinoma aequizonata contend that symbiotic chemoautotrophic bacteria provide most of the organic carbon for the host. The existence of this symbiosis, coupled with the hosts distinctive anatomical features, shaped the impression that particulate feeding was not a significant part of L. aequizonata nutrition. Here, we use several techniques to show that particulate feeding is a consistent and important part of the L. aequizonata nutritional strategy. Histological and scanning electron microscopy observations reveal that the gills of L. aequizonata, like those of the lucinid Parvilucina tenuisculpta, have functional mucociliary epithelia, able to transport captured particles to the mouth. Observations of gut content and radiolabeled feeding experiments indicate that L. aequizonata does ingest and assimilate carbon from particulate organic matter. Furthermore, molecular identification of a broad spectrum of organisms in the guts of native adult specimens demonstrates that L. aequizonata is non-selective when ingesting organic material, and has a mixotrophic diet.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at Communicated by P.W. Sublethal behavioural responses including avoidance and burial rate were compared with 10 d acute morbidity and mortality in bioassays using juvenile Macomona liliana 1 to 3 mm long. The bivalves showed significant movement away from all copper-dosed sediments, with maximal movement after 96 h at 25 mg Cu kg (dry wt)-1. Increasing copper concentrations slowed the rate of burial, and above 15 mg Cu kg (dry wt)-1, most shellfish failed to bury after 90 min. After 10 d exposure, morbidity (defined as inability to rebury) occurred at 15 mg Cu kg (dry wt)-1 and mortality at 30 mg Cu kg (dry wt)-1. In avoidance trials, chlordane had a significant effect on overall movement from 20 g kg (dry wt)-1, but increasing concentrations reduced movement away from dosed sediment. Chlordance appeared to have no effect on burial rate. Survival was affected by 10 d exposure to 400 g chlordane kg (dry wt)-1, with increased morbidity and death. The relative sensitivities of the responses shown by M. liliana to copper were avoidance > burial/morbidity > mortality, with a 6-fold difference in the response threshold between avoidance and mortality. With chlordance, an avoidance response was detected at a concentration 20-fold lower than that causing morbidity.
