Proteinase (endopeptidase), trypsin-like and chymotrypsin-like activities were examined throughout the ontogenetic development of cultured Farfantepenaeus paulensis. Whole individuals from different larval and postlarval stages, and the hepatopancreas of adults were homogenized and assayed to quantify the enzyme activities of specific substrates. Proteinase activity was identified by substrate-SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Specific inhibitors for trypsin (TLCK), chymotrypsin (TPCK) and serine proteinases (PMSF) were used to identify activity zones of these enzymes in gels. Protein-specific activity of total proteinases, trypsin and chymotrypsin was negligible at the egg stage and at Nauplius III, increasing in the first protozoeal substage (PZ I), and reaching a peak at PZ III; it decreased again in the subsequent postlarval substages. Different patterns of proteinase activity were observed in SDS-PAGE zymograms during ontogenetic development. Active bands of 14.6, 16.4, 17.5, 19.5, 22.5, 23.9, 25.8, 28.9, 32.0, 34.4, 37.7, and 42.2 kdaltons were detected in the adult hepatopancreas. Proteolytic activity was detected on gels in PZ I, and intense activity zones of 16.4, 17.5 and 19.5 kdaltons were found up to Mysis I (M I). Intense bands of 39.1 and 53.5 kdaltons were observed only at PZ III and M I. Band-activity intensity decreased after metamorphosis to the postlarval stage (PL). The chymotrypsin inhibitor TPCK had no effect on the proteinase bands. Active zones in gel inhibited with both TLCK and PMSF were considered to represent trypsin. The inhibitory effect of PMSF alone on proteinase extracts indicated chymotrypsin activity. TLCK and PMSF inhibition also varied during ontogenetic development. The inhibition of bands recorded between 14.6 and 21.7 kdaltons suggested the presence of low molecular weight trypsin in F. paulensis. The 39.1 kdaltons band observed at PZ III and M I were trypsin-like. On the other hand, bands of 28.9, 32 and 37.7 kdaltons from the adult hepatopancreas seem to represent a chymotrypsin. We conclude that the recorded variation in enzyme activity may be associated with morphological and behavioral changes during penaeid ontogenetic development. The higher enzyme activity at PZ II, PZ III and M I may reflect the increased energy turnover associated with intense swimming behavior and food ingestion. Growth and development rates were determined for nauplii of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) in the near-shore waters of a western Norwegian fjord from in situ mesocosm incubations. The major food source for the nauplii was diatoms, but Phaeocystis sp., dinoflagellates and ciliates were also part of the diet. At local temperatures ranging from 4.8 to 5.2 °C the cumulative median development time from hatching to Nauplius VI was 19 d. The time taken to molt to the next naupliar stage was approximately constant (3 d) from Stages IV to VI, but Stage III needed the longest development time (5 d). The instantaneous growth rate in terms of body carbon was negative from hatching to Nauplius Stage II, but as high as 0.25 to 0.30 d−1 from Stage III to V. Enhancement of food resources by nutrient addition led to no significant change in specific growth rates. Additionally, the cohorts from different nutrient regimes showed almost equal development time, size and body carbon within stages. Length–weight relationships of nauplii from the two different food resources were: W low resources = 4.17 × 10−6 × L 2.03 (r 2 = 0.84) and W high resources = 4.29 × 10−6 × L 2.05 (r 2 = 0.92), where weight (W) is in micrograms of C and body length (L) in micrometers. The natural body morphology of naupliar stages I to VI is illustrated with digital images, including the final molt from Nauplius VI to Copepodid Stage I. In general, development of the nauplii was faster than that of the copepodids of C. finmarchicus, and structural growth was exponential from naupliar stages III to VI. This study validates our earlier results that nauplii of C. finmarchicus can obtain high growth and nearly maximal developmental rates at relatively low food levels (∼50 μg C l−1), suggesting that nauplii exhibit far less dependence on food supply than copepodids. A temperature-dependent growth model is presented for nauplii and copepodites of the estuarine calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa from southern Europe (Portugal). Development was followed from egg to adult in the laboratory at four temperatures (10, 15, 18 and 22°C) and under saturating food conditions (>1,000 μg C l−1). Development times versus incubation temperature were fitted to a Belehradek’s function, showing that development times decreased with increasing incubation temperature: at 10°C, A. tonsa need 40.3 days to reach adult stage, decreasing to 8.9 days when reared at 22°C. ANCOVA (homogeneity of slopes) showed that temperature (P<0.001) and growth phase (P<0.01) had a significant effect on the growth rate. Over the range of temperatures tested in this study, highest weight-specific growth rates were found during naupliar development (NI–NVI) and varied from 0.185 day−1 (10°C) to 0.880 day−1 (22°C) with a Q 10 equal to 3.66. During copepodite growth (CI–CV), the weight-specific growth rates ranged from 0.125 day−1 (10°C) to 0.488 day−1 (22°C) with a Q 10 equal to 3.12. The weight-specific growth rates (g) followed temperature (T) by a linear relationship and described as ln g=−2.962+0.130 T (r 2=0.99, P<0.001) for naupliar stages and ln g=−3.134+0.114T (r 2=0.97, P<0.001) for copepodite stages. By comparing in situ growth rates (juvenile growth and fecundity) for A. tonsa taken from the literature with the temperature-dependent growth model defined here we suggest that the adult females of A. tonsa are more frequently food limited than juveniles.  相似文献

A suite of characteristics is often used to assess egg quality as these properties potentially play important roles in progeny survival and growth. Our objective was to assess egg characteristics including lipid biocomposition of an iteroparous, batch-spawning teleost of wild origin. Maternal allocation to egg number was generally dome-shaped (5 of 8 females) and egg size declined over the breeding season for eight breeding pairs of wild Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) (n = 43 batches). Egg lipid composition ranged considerably among females and between egg batches within females (e.g., phospholipids 40–86 %; polar 47–87 % and neutral lipids 15–52 % of total lipids; polyunsaturated fatty acids 16–50 % of total fatty acids). Principal component analyses revealed significant inter-relationships among maternal traits, batch sequence and fecundity, and egg size and composition. Seasonal trends with regard to lipid deposition were variable; three females showed consistent declines in lipid parameters (μg egg−1) with both batch number and egg diameter, one female showed consistent increase and the four remaining females showed no trend. The three females that exhibited seasonal declines in egg lipid content were characterized as having high fertilization success (>75 %). Our findings highlight the variability in lipid allocation to eggs of batch spawners of wild origin and characterize the composition of endogenous reserves available during embryogenesis and yolk sac larval stages.  相似文献

Feeding, egg production, hatching success and early naupliar development of Calanus finmarchicus were measured in three north Norwegian fjords during a spring bloom dominated by diatoms and the haptophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii. Majority of the copepod diet consisted of diatoms, mainly Thalassiosira spp. and Chaetoceros spp., with clearance rates up to 10 ml ind−1 h−1 for individual algae species/groups. Egg production rates were high, ranging from ca 40 up to 90 eggs f−1 d−1, with a hatching success of 70–85%, and fast naupliar development through the first non-feeding stages. There was no correlation between the egg or nauplii production and diatom abundance, but the hatching success was slightly negatively correlated with diatom biomass. However, the overall high reproductive rates suggested that the main food items were not harmful for C. finmarchicus reproduction in the area, although direct chemical measurements were not conducted. The high population egg production (>1,20,000 eggs m−2 d−1) indicated that a large part of the annual reproduction took place during the investigation, which stresses the importance of diatom-dominated spring phytoplankton bloom for population recruitment of C. finmarchicus in these northern ecosystems.  相似文献

The annual occurrence of hypoxia (<25% oxygen saturation) in the bottom waters along the Swedish west coast coincides with the postlarval settlement of Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus (L.). This study investigates behaviour and the experimental effects of low oxygen concentrations in juvenile N. norvegicus of different ages. All experimental individuals were reared to the juvenile (postlarval) stage in the laboratory and then given sediment as a substratum. Behavioural responses to low oxygen concentrations were tested in early and late Postlarvae 1 exposed to normoxia (>80% oxygen saturation, pO2 > 16.7 kPa), moderate hypoxia (30% oxygen saturation, pO2 = 6.3 kPa) and hypoxia (25% oxygen saturation, pO2 = 5.2 kPa). The experiments were run for a maximum period of 24 h or until individuals died. Behaviour was studied using sequential video recordings of four behavioural activities: digging, walking, inactivity or flight (escape swimming up into the water column). Behaviour and mortality changed with lowered oxygen concentrations; energetically costly activities (such as walking) were reduced, and activity in general declined. In normoxia, juveniles initially walked and then burrowed, but when exposed to hypoxia they were mainly inactive with occasional outbursts of escape swimming. To increase oxygen availability the juveniles were observed to raise their bodies on stilted legs (similar to adults in hypoxic conditions), but oxygen saturations of 25% were lethal within 24 h. The results suggest that the main gas exchanges of early postlarval stages occur over the general body surface. Burrowing behaviour was tested in Postlarvae 1 and 2 of different ages held in >80% oxygen saturation for 1 wk. The difference in time taken to complete a V-shaped depression or a U-shaped burrow was measured. The results showed a strong negative relationship between postlarval age and burrowing time, but all individuals made a burrow. Juveniles were more sensitive to hypoxia than adults. Thus, the possible consequences of episodic hypoxia for the recruitment of Nephrops norvegicus and for the recolonization of severely affected areas are discussed.  Growth and developmental rates were determined for copepodids of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) from experimental seawater mesocosms in a western Norwegian fjord. The instantaneous growth rates (g) from copepodid stage I (CI) to adult ranged from 0.08 to 0.10 d−1. Daily per capita mortality rate of the cohorts was as low as 0.012 d−1 (1.2% d−1). At local increasing temperatures (5.1 to 8.3 °C), development was equiproportional, and the cumulative median development time from egg to CV was approximately 65 d. CV moulted to males and females, and egg production was initiated. Enhancement of food resources by nutrient addition caused a 23.4% increase in growth rates from CI to adult. Additionally, copepodid stages showed a generally larger body size, carbon and nitrogen content and total storage lipid content (wax esters + triacylglycerols) in response to enhanced resources. Our data support an elsewhere proposed exponential-growth hypothesis; growth of the structural compartments and store lipids (mostly wax esters) was exponential during the copepodid stages. However, a sigmoidal pattern of growth best described growth of adult stages if reared at high resources, and depot lipid accumulation in late CVs and adults at high resources. Body nitrogen growth increased exponentially, however, no significant changes in nitrogen specific growth rates were found between individuals from low and high resources. CV and adults seem to have reached near-maximal weights at high resources, whereas structural weight continued to increase at low resources. Despite the differences in structural growth dynamics, cohort development was similar until the end of CV. During the onset of sexual differentiation, the male:female ratio and the adult:CV ratio were highest at high food resources, suggesting that the time used for the final moult depends on the feeding history of the copepods in relation to food quality and quantity. It appears that relatively small changes in food availability strongly influence the biochemical composition of C. finmarchicus copepodids. Simple life-history models were employed to identify those larval stages of Euphausia pacifica (Hansen) with the greatest potential contribution to variability in recruitment success. Using stage-specific vital parameters (i.e. stage duration and specific mortality) the models explored the influence of developmental variability without ascribing the variability to any particular cause or forcing. Through such a non-mechanistic modelling approach, the critical periods in larval development were determined. The results led to inferences about larval population responses to temperature/food heterogeneity in the natural environment. Peaks in recruitment-success elasticity were evident for variability imposed during the egg and Furcilia I and II stages. The high elasticity of the egg stage suggested the importance of female nutrition and the timing and location of egg release in determining their viability and subsequent recruitment success. Peak elasticity during the Furcilia I and II stages supported the notion that indirect developmental pathways of pleopod development during these stages may be associated with diminished recruitment success. Sensitivity analyses further highlighted the influence of these early furcilia stages in determining recruitment success, and also suggested the importance of the Furcilia III and VII stages. The robustness of elasticity and sensitivity results with respect to the life-history structure utilized is discussed. A criterion is presented for the identification of life-history structures which might obscure the true elasticity relationships of a developmental sequence. Population dynamics and production of the egg-carrying calanoid copepod Pseudodiaptomus marinus were studied for a year in Fukuyama Harbor, a eutrophic inlet of the Inland Sea of Japan. This species was perennial, with a large numerical peak in June and small peaks in September/October and November/December. During the study period, at least 11 generations could be detected. For each generation, the stage-specific survival from egg to Copepodite Stage (C) V was determined; it was very high during early life stages (egg to NIII), and gradually decreased beyond. On average, 94% of eggs recruited into NIII, which is strongly contrasted with very high (>ca. 90%) mortality during the corresponding stages for free-spawning copepods, i.e. Acartia omorii, Centropages abdominalis and Paracalans sp. This demonstrates that the egg-carrying strategy has a great advantage to reduce mortality in egg stage. The biomass of this species showed marked seasonal variations largely in parallel with numerical abundance. The instantaneous somatic growth rate increased linearly with temperature. The population production rate was estimated as the sum of somatic growth of larval stages and egg production of adult females; the annual integration was 51.0 mg C m−3 yr−1 or 0.38 g C m−2 yr−1. The population dynamics of Pseudocalanus acuspes in the Central Baltic Sea were studied from March 2002 to May 2003 on a monthly basis. All stages were present year round with a stage shift from nauplii to older copepodite stages over the course of the year. Biomass, estimated from prosome length, peaked between May and September with maximum recorded values of 594 and 855 mg C m−2 in May 2002 and 2003, respectively. Differences in biomass between stations up to a factor of 20 were observed especially in April/May and October. Mean egg production rate (EPR) showed a seasonal course and was highest in April 2002 and 2003 with 3.6 and 2.1 eggs f−1 day−1, respectively, corresponding to a mean weight-specific egg production rate (SEPR) of 0.13 and 0.04. Egg production seems to be limited by food from May on. Stage durations determined from moulting experiments turned out to be extremely long. Maximum growth rates based on stage durations of 15–25 days at 4°C in May and July 2003 amounted for 0.03–0.05 day−1 in CI-CIV. Comparing these rates with rates derived from temperature–development relationships for P. acuspes from the literature resulted in five times higher growth rates for the latter case. Secondary production reached values up to 9.1 mg C m−2 day−1 (method for continuously reproducing populations) and 10.5 mg C m−2 day−1 (increment summation).  相似文献

As part of an ongoing study of changes in the trophic pathways of Florida Bay's pelagic ecosystem, the nutritional environment (seston protein, lipid and carbohydrate levels), diet (taxon-specific microplankton ingestion rates) and egg production rate of the important planktonic copepod Acartia tonsa were measured off Rankin and Duck Keys in July and September 1997 and in January, March and May 1998. Rankin Key has been the site of extensive sea grass mortality and persistent ultraplankton blooms since 1987. Duck Key has experienced neither of these perturbations. Protist (auto-plus heterotroph) biomass was approximately twice as high off Rankin as off Duck Key. Diatoms, dinoflagellates and heterotrophic protists dominated the food environment off Rankin Key, while cells <5 μm diam often predominated off Duck Key. Protein and carbohydrate concentrations were higher off Rankin Key than Duck Key, while average lipid levels were usually low at both stations. Ingestion rates at both stations frequently approached temperature- and food-dependent maxima for the species, exceeding 100% of estimated body C d−1 on 3 of 5 occasions off Rankin Key. Egg production rates, however, were consistently low (Rankin: 3 to 16 eggs copepod−1 d−1; Duck: 1 to 12 eggs copepod−1 d−1), and gross egg production efficiencies (100% × egg production C/ingested C) averaged <10%. At Duck Key, egg production rate varied with temperature and food concentration, while off Rankin Key, egg production was strongly correlated with seston protein content. The efficiency with which lipids (which were scarce in the seston) were transferred from the diet to the eggs increased exponentially with decreasing seston lipid content. Egg production efficiencies based on protein, however, were independent of seston protein content and never exceeded 10%. Received: 23 December 1998 / Accepted: 23 March 2000  相似文献

Sardine larvae are forced to grow as fast as possible to reduce larval mortality. Thus, changes in biochemical composition during the first steps of sardine larval growth are intended to maximize larval growth rate efficiency and survival. Protein and RNA weight-specific growth rates were the highest and their corresponding doubling times the shortest among all the biomolecules, reflecting the importance of fast growth during early stages of larval development. The protein percentage increased and the carbohydrate and lipid percentages decreased during early growth until they reached, respectively, a percentage of 73.7, 3.1 and 18.0%. These percentages would represent the optimal proportion of biochemical components in sardine early larvae and they are the result of the trade-off between, in the short term, the protein proportion necessary to optimize larval movement and growth and, in the long term, the minimum lipid percentage necessary to guarantee energy reserves to fuel metamorphosis. RNA/DNA ratio increases during larval growth up to an asymptotic optimal value of ≈3.5 in postflexion larvae. Nutritional condition of sardine larvae was good and was influenced by the parental effect through the egg biochemical composition and by the growth trajectory determined by the actual environmental conditions.  相似文献

Survival, developmental and consumption rate (Artemia nauplii ingested per day) as well as predation efficiency (ingested per available Artemia nauplii) were studied during the larval development of the shallow-water burrowing thalassinid Callianassa tyrrhena (Petagna, 1792), which exhibits an abbreviated type of development with only two zoeal stages and a megalopa. The larvae, hatched from berried females from S. Euboikos Bay (Aegean Sea, Greece), were reared at 10 temperature–food density combinations (19 and 24 °C; 0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 Artemia nauplii d−1). Enhanced starvation resistance was evident: 92 and 58% of starved zoeas I molted to zoea II, while metamorphosis to megalopa was achieved by 76 and 42% of the hatched zoeas at 19 and 24 °C, respectively. The duration of both zoeal stages was affected by temperature, food density and their interaction. Nevertheless, starvation showed different effects at the two temperatures: compared to the fed shrimp, the starved zoeae exhibited accelerated development at 19 °C (8.4 d) but delayed metamorphosis at 24 °C (5.9 d). On the other hand, both zoeal stages were able to consume food at an increased rate as food density and temperature increased. Predation efficiency also increased with temperature, but never exceeded 0.6. Facultative lecithotrophy, more pronounced during the first zoeal stage of C.tyrrhena, can be regarded as an adaptation of a species whose larvae can respond physiologically to the different temperature–food density combinations encountered in the wide geographical range of their natural habitat. We studied the effect of a developing Skeletonema marinoi/Phaeocystis spp. bloom on Calanus finmarchicus hatching success, early naupliar survival and metabolism. Our focus was (1) on the development of reproductive rates during a bloom initiation, peak and decline in relation to the production of potentially toxic algal metabolites and (2) on the proportional importance of female nutrition versus naupliar food environment for the production of viable nauplii. Despite polyunsaturated aldehyde (PUA) production by both S. marinoi and Phaeocystis sp., we did not observe any harmful effects on hatching success or naupliar survival and condition in any stages of the short-term (<1 week) algal bloom. Hatching success appeared to be controlled by egg lipid composition, while the beneficial effect of a high food concentration was reflected in naupliar RNA:DNA ratio, protein content and total production of viable nauplii. The egg lipids reflected seston lipids, indicating that the egg fatty acid composition was not modified by the females. Our results suggest that unselective feeding and/or retention of specific lipids can induce qualitative food limitation, although recruitment during the S. marinoi/Phaeocystis sp. bloom was high.  相似文献

The dependency of in situ weight-specific fecundity of adult females (as egg production) and growth of juveniles (as somatic production) upon individual body weight in marine planktonic copepods was examined. A compilation was made of results where wild-caught individuals were incubated in natural seawater (often pre-screened to remove large organisms), at near in situ temperatures, over short periods of the order of 24 h. The results demonstrate that for the adult broadcast-spawning group weight-specific fecundity rates are dependent upon body weight, but independent of temperature. We postulate this may be the result of global patterns in available phytoplankton. Weight-specific growth rates are dependent upon individual temperature and body weight in juvenile broadcast-spawners, with rates declining as body weight increases. Sac-spawners have growth/fecundity rates that are independent of body weight in adults, juveniles, and both combined, but which are temperature-dependent. Globally applicable equations are derived which may be used to predict growth and production of marine copepods using easily quantifiable parameters, namely size-distributed biomass and temperature. Some of the variability in growth which remained unaccounted for is the result of variations in food quantity and quality in the natural environment. Comparisons of the rates compiled here over the temperature range 10 to 20 °C with previously compiled food-saturated rates over the same temperature interval, revealed that in situ rates are typically sub-optimal. Adults appear to be more food-limited than juveniles, adult rates in situ being 32 and 40% of those under food saturation in broadcasters and sac-spawners, respectively, while juvenile in situ rates are on average ∼70% of those at food saturation in both broadcasters and sac-spawners.  Detailed inventories of the benthos and field studies of the settlement and recruitment processes of marine benthic invertebrates require accurate identification of newly settled larvae and early juvenile stages. We provide morphological criteria, visible under a good quality dissecting stereomicroscope, by which to discriminate between species of the settling larval and early postlarval stages (∼250 to 700 μm shell length) of mussels of the genus Mytilus on the west coast of Vancouver Island and Southern California. Compared to the bay mussel (M. trossulus), the sea mussel (M. californianus) has: (i) a shallower and flatter umbo, the latter corresponding to a significantly less pronounced prodissoconch I (PI) curvature and (ii) a greater PI length; as well as (iii) a wider separation between the provincular lateral teeth (PLT). The PLT distance is a new term denoting the separation between the midpoint of two reddish pigment spots of the provinculum (larval hinge apparatus) region of settling larvae and early postlarvae of Mytilus spp. from the East Pacific Coast. These spots mark the larger provincular lateral teeth, situated at either end of the provinculum. We confirmed the validity of morphological criteria by comparing PCR products of genomic DNA of provisionally identified postlarvae. Furthermore, measurements of PI lengths and PLT distance from well-preserved postlarvae of sea mussels (M. californianus) and of bay mussels (M. galloprovincialis) from Southern California indicate that the PI morphology and morphometry, and PLT distance criterion apply for that region as well. The criteria presented here can also apply to the advanced (competent) veliger stages, as the latter may settle (i.e. become the “settling” stage) upon encountering a suitable substrate. Our present and previously published work provide economical and effective identification methods that can be used to discriminate among early life history stages (∼250 μm to 5.0 mm shell length) of Mytilus spp. along the west coast of North America. Post-prandial increases in metabolism, the specific dynamic action of feeding (SDA), were evaluated in the Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna. O2 consumption rose to a peak value 2.3 times higher than pre-feeding standard metabolic rates. This peak rise is low for marine ectotherms, but is typical of polar species. There were three peaks in the SDA, the first lasted only for the 1st day, was caused by handling, and was minor. The second was the major peak. It lasted from post-prandial days 4–9 inclusive, and accounted for around 70% of the SDA response. The third peak lasted from day 11 to day 15 and accounted for 30% of the total SDA. A 15-day SDA is much longer than values for temperate species, but is again typical for polar marine ectotherms. NH3 excretion declined post-prandially from around 0.4 μmol animal−1 h−1 to values between 0.025 and 0.223 μmol animal−1 h−1 throughout the SDA. The total O2 consumed in the SDA was 90.2 μmol O2, which converts to 44.7 J of energy. This was 45–50% of the energy consumed in the meal (93.5 J). Pre-feeding O:N ratios, after 26 days without food, were around 1, indicating protein as the sole metabolic substrate prior to initiating the SDA. After feeding, O:N ratios rose to between 2.5 and 19, indicating significant use of lipid or carbohydrate from the food. Experiments were conducted in ambient seawater with enhanced levels of Sr (SrCl added at 800 mg kg−1), and limpets were fed microalgal films also grown in enhanced Sr media. Sr incorporated in the shells during the experiment allowed the measurement of shell increments deposited during the SDA. Between five and eight microgrowth bands were present in the Sr-enhanced increments, which was similar to the number of days in the second SDA peak. The mean shell increment laid down was 17.6 μm. Estimating tissue deposition from measured growth increments and published ash-free dry mass (AFDM) to length relationships produced a value of 0.81 mg AFDM, which converted to 26.4 J of energy, or 25–30% of the energy ingested in the meal. Estimates of growth increments associated with a single SDA have not previously been possible. Overall energy used in the SDA and tissue deposition accounted for 75–80% of the energy ingested; the remainder was probably accounted for by unmeasured costs such as mucus production. The reproduction and growth of Isostichopus fuscus (Ludwig, 1875) at Isla Espíritu Santo, Baja California Sur, México from July 1992 to September 1993 and from August 1996 to July 1997 were analyzed. The reproductive cycle was monitored by using histological analysis. Five gonadal stages were described according to cell types present in the gonad; undetermined, gametogenesis, maturity, spawning and post-spawning. This holothurian reproduces annually during summer (July to September), when sea surface temperature reaches 27 °C. The gonad index is related to the gonadal stages. The first sexual maturity for I. fuscus was calculated at 367 g (4 to 5 years old) according to the von Bertalanffy equation, and nearly all the specimens at Isla Espíritu Santo were 5 to 7 years old (including some individuals over 35 years old). Data of the length–weight relationship showed that I. fuscus grows allometrically at the studied site (b = 1.83). The mortality rate was relatively high (M = 0.51), indicating that in a typical cohort, 40% of the recruits does not survive the first year, and less than 20% reaches maturity. Vertical distribution, life cycle, and developmental characteristics of the mesopelagic copepod Gaidius variabilis Brodsky in the Oyashio region were investigated by combining analyses of field copepodite populations with laboratory-rearing data of egg hatching and naupliar development. Field samplings from five discrete depths between the surface and ≤2000 m were made approximately every month for 1 year. Most populations of G. variabilis occurred between 600 and 1000 m depth. A modest degree of reversed diel vertical migration behavior and some stage-specific depth-distribution patterns were noted. All copepodite stages were observed throughout the year, suggesting a year-round spawning of G. variabilis. From a prominent abundance peak of Copepodite Stage 1 (C1) seen in June to August, together with development times of eggs and nauplii obtained in laboratory-rearing experiments, the major spawning season was extrapolated to be April to June, the phytoplankton bloom season. Tracing the peak abundance of each copepodite stage (distinguishing males and females for C4 to C6), the generation times of males and females were deduced as 2 and 1 year, respectively. All between-stage increments in terms of wet-, dry-, and ash-free dry weights were greatest in C3/C4, and least in C5/C6 for both males and females. The increments in C3/C4 and C4/C5 were greater for males than for females, reflecting a longer stage duration of the males. These weights did not increase in C5/C6 males, possibly because feeding ceased in C6 males. These results for G. variabilis are compared with those for some mesopelagic copepods previously reported from other regions. Received: 25 October 1999 / Accepted: 20 March 2000  相似文献

We used time-series analysis to identify weekly and annual patterns in the supply of spiny lobster, Panulirus argus (Latreille, 1804), postlarvae to the Florida Keys, USA, over an 8 yr period. We also investigated the relationship between postlarval influx and wind forcing as a transport mechanism using the complex vector-scalar correlation analysis. Postlarval supply had a lunar phase periodicity at 4.5 wk intervals, with postlarval abundance peaking between the new moon and first-quarter lunar phases. A distinct annual cycle of postlarval supply with two peak periods was also apparent. Cross-correlation analysis between relative postlarval abundance and a 12 mo cycle showed that the annual peak occurs in spring, centered around March. With the 12 mo periodicity removed, a smaller peak at 5 mo intervals was also well defined. Wind-forcing for 7 d prior to the time of postlarval collection was marginally correlated with postlarval abundance through the entire time-series; the association was strongest during the late fall to early spring months. The analysis indicated that postlarval supply was correlated with winds from the northeast (ca. 45°), which are associated with winter atmospheric fronts. In contrast to results reported for other spiny lobster populations, these patterns suggest that recruitment of lobster postlarvae to south Florida is predictable only at a gross level and is presumably affected by the temporally inconsistent structure of regional oceanic gyres and variability in the timing of lobster spawning in the Caribbean.
