Lipid analyses were carried out on various species of zooplankton captured in Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, Canada, during September, 1972. The amphipod Cyphocaris challengeri had the highest level of lipid, consisting mainly of wax esters. The copepod Calanus pacificus had moderate amounts of lipid, with triglyceride as the major neutral lipid. The euphausiid Thysanoessa raschii contained mainly triglyceride in its moderate levels of neutral lipid, while wax esters and, to a lesser extent, triglycerides were present in the very small levels of neutral lipid in the chaetognath Sagitta elegans. The major fatty alcohols in wax esters of both Cyphocaris challengeri and Calanus pacificus were 20:1 and 22:1, although notable differences were found in the major fatty acids. Biosynthetic studies showed that phospholipids were labelled faster than neutral lipids in all species with both (U-14C) glucose and (1-14C) palmitic acid as precursors. Only species containing significant amounts of wax esters in their neutral lipids incorporated substantial amounts of radio-activity from (1-14C) palmitic acid into wax esters in (i) living animals, (ii) preparations containing fragments of tissue, (iii) cell-free systems. All species incorporated added fatty alcohols into wax esters in preparations containing tissue fragments and in cell-free preparations. Both the fatty acid and fatty alcohols of the wax esters of both Calanus pacificus and S. elegans were labelled from (1-14C) palmitic acid, consistent with de novo biosynthesis of the esters. (1-14C) hexadecanol was incorporated into wax esters almost entirely in the fatty alcohol moiety. It is concluded that all species examined formed was esters when presented with preformed fatty alcohols, but only those species that had wax esters as a major component of the neutral lipids were capable of de novo biosynthesis of the lipids.  相似文献

The distribution of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) over the major neutral and polar lipid classes was determined for two predominant types of live food used in the larviculture of marine fish and shrimp, i.e. freshly hatched and HUFA-enriched Artemia, and compared with data reported in the literature for wild copepods, representing the natural diet of these larvae. Lipid class composition and their content of n-3 HUFA, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), were assessed in freshly hatched, HUFA-enriched and subsequently starved Artemia franciscana. The n-3 HUFA enrichment was based on feeding Artemia a lipid emulsion in which either fatty acid ethyl esters (EE, diluted with olive oil) or triacylglycerol (TAG) provided a level of 30% n-3 HUFA. Enrichment of Artemia with either type of the lipid emulsions resulted in an increase of total lipid content from 20.0 to 28.2–28.7% of dry matter mainly due to the accumulation of neutral lipid, primarily TAG (from 82 to 158 mg g−1 dry wt in freshly hatched and 24-h enriched Artemia). Enriched brine shrimp utilized up to 27–30% of their TAG content during 72 h of starvation at 12 °C. The absolute tissue concentrations of polar lipids remained constant at 71 to 79 mg g−1 dry wt throughout the enrichment and subsequent starvation. The level of n-3 HUFA increased drastically during enrichment from 6.3% of total fatty acids (8.2 mg g−1 dry wt) in freshly hatched nauplii to between 20.4 and 21.8% (40.4 to 43.2 mg g−1 dry wt) in 24-h enriched Artemia and was not significantly affected by the source of n-3 HUFA. During starvation, 18:0, 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3 were retained, whereas 18:4n-3, 22:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 were specifically catabolized. The major polar lipids, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC), of freshly hatched Artemia showed very low levels of DHA (<0.1% of total fatty acids) and carried about 45% of the total EPA present. Enrichment with either of the emulsions resulted in an increase of the neutral lipid fraction which concentrated >64% of the EPA and >91% of the total DHA present. This is in sharp contrast with the high levels of n-3 HUFA, in particular DHA, in the polar lipid fraction reported for wild copepods. The contrasting distribution of DHA in the neutral and polar lipid fractions of enriched brine shrimp compared to the natural diet may influence the efficacy of this essential fatty acid for marine fish larvae in aquaculture systems. The total lipids and fatty acid composition of natural particulate matter and nutritional quality for zooplankton grazers was studied on a seasonal basis in the Arctic fjord Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) during the spring, summer of 2007 and during the early summer of 2006. Both years were abnormally warm, and the study attempted to evaluate the potential impact of the intrusion of North Atlantic waters. Samples were collected in surface layers and at deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM when present). Both years, chlorophyll concentrations were low (<2 μg L?1) even during bloom periods. Species determination indicated Phaeocystis spp. as main constituent of the May bloom while ciliates and flagellates dominated the rest of the survey period. Total lipids showed similar changes at both depths with maximum values in mid-summer of 2007, while it showed reverse patterns between surface and DCM in 2006. Total fatty acid composition was dominated by saturates and monoenoic acids at both depths with significant percentages of pentaenoic acids and 22:6n-3 (DHA) recorded at all times. The 2007 fatty acid dynamics identified four main successions in term of particulate assemblage related mainly to the succession of living cells versus detrital material and to a lesser extent to phytoplankton community changes (diatoms versus non-diatoms). Redundancy analysis confirmed that live phytoplankton is one of the main drivers in the fatty acid changes. Temperature and density of the surface water are also influential in relation to water mass dynamics. Concentrations of fatty acids available to consumers showed n-3 PUFA ranging from 2 to 15 μg L?1 and n-6 PUFA ranging from 0.3 to 2 μg L?1. Concentration of EPA (20:5) and DHA are potentially limiting, suggesting a negative impact of Phaeocystis pouchetti-type phytoplankton linked to advection of Atlantic waters in relation to global warming of Arctic waters.  相似文献

The effects of starvation on the levels of protein, carbohydrates and lipids of three principal reserve compartments-the gonads, digestive tract, and test-have been studied in the resting stage of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula. Variations of these levels were observed during 1 month's starvation. Analysis of covariance revealed the following significant changes: (a) a decrease in carbohydrates of the test and digestive tract; (b) a decrease in lipids of the test and gonads; (c) an increase in proteins of the gonads. A decrease in the carbohydrates and lipids of the test during the first week of starvation emphasizes the importance of the test as a storage organ.  相似文献

The lipid and fatty acid composition of male and female Penaeus japonicus Bate was investigated over a period of 11 months to determine the effects of environmental and nutritional factors such as temperature and starvation. The lipid content of the prawns increases from May to November, whereas water content decreases. We observed a time-lag between the highest lipid rate of males (in November) and that of females (in October); this is probably related to ovarian metabolism. From September to March, the high lipid content of the females coincided with a high percentage of monounsaturated fatty acids (especially 16:1 and 18:1). Winter starvation induces a decrease in palmitic acid content. As temperature decreases, the monounsaturated (16:1, 18:1) and polyunsaturated (20:4, 20:5, 22:6) fatty acids increase at the expense of the saturated fatty acids (16:0, 18:0) in the adult prawn. However, in post-larvae and juveniles, this increased rate of polyunsaturated fatty acids would be related to their particular lipid metabolism.  相似文献

Pleuragramma antarcticum is a key component of the neritic assemblages in the Antarctic coastal waters. Larvae of this species were sampled from 2008 to 2011 in the Dumont d’Urville Sea (East Antarctica). The lipid class composition [triacylglycerols (TAG), cholesterol (Chol) and polar lipids (PL)] of larvae was measured to assess the larval condition. The total amount of lipids was linearly related to the quantity of structural polar lipids, suggesting that growth is favored over lipid storage. The TAG:Chol ratio showed interannual variability in the condition of fish larvae, probably related to prey availability. Nevertheless, the essential fatty acids composition of polar lipids illustrates that larvae with low levels of TAG:Chol could be either growing or under starvation. Only the combination of a low TAG:Chol ratio and low polar lipids content, which can also be mobilized during starvation periods, allowed identification of larvae in poor condition. This lipid condition index should be of great assistance to evaluate the probability of survival of P. antarcticum larvae in long-term monitoring. It has widespread applicability and should also be useful in the diagnosis of nutritional condition in other species.  相似文献

The lipid/fatty acid composition of marine fish eggs and larvae is linked with buoyancy regulation, but our understanding of such processes is largely restricted to species with pelagic eggs. In this study, we examined developmental changes in the lipid/fatty acids of eggs and embryos of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), a species that spawns demersal eggs along coastal shelf edges, but as larvae must make a rapid transition to the upper reaches of the water column. Adult Pacific cod were collected in the Gulf of Alaska during the spawning season and eggs of two females were artificially fertilized with sperm from three males for each female. The eggs were subsequently reared in the laboratory to determine (1) how lipids/fatty acids were catabolized during egg and larval development, and (2) whether lipid/fatty acid catabolism had measurable effects on egg/embryo density. Eggs incubated at 4°C began hatching after 3-weeks and continued to hatch over a 10-day period, during which there was a distinct shift in lipid classes (phospholipids (PL), triacyglycerols (TAG), and sterols (ST)) and essential fatty acids (EFAs: 22:6n-3 (DHA), 20:5n-3 (EPA), and 20:4n-6 (AA)). In the egg stage, total lipid content steadily decreased during the first 60% of development, but just prior to hatch we observed an unexpected 2–3-fold lipid increase (~6–9 μg individual−1) and a significant drop in egg density. The increase in lipids was largely driven by PL, with evidence of long-chained fatty acid synthesis. Late-hatching larvae had progressively decreasing lipid and fatty acid reserves, suggesting a shift from lipogenesis to lipid catabolism with continued larval development. Egg density measures suggest that lipid/fatty acid composition is linked to buoyancy regulation as larvae shift from a demersal to a pelagic existence following hatch. The biochemical pathway by which Pacific cod are apparently able to synthesize EFAs is unknown, therefore representing a remarkable finding meriting further investigation.  相似文献

The impact of supplementing lipid emulsions rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EmEPA), docosahexaenoic acid (EmDHA) or saturated fatty acids (EmCOCO) to a standard algal diet [3:1 mixture of Isochrysis galbana (T-iso) and Chaetoceros neogracile, St-diet] on Argopecten purpuratus broodstock was evaluated. Broodstock fecundity was compared as well as the egg quality in terms of lipid content, fatty acid composition and lipid class distribution. Fecundity was defined as the number of eggs released in the spawning process, since spawning was virtually complete. Results indicated that the total lipid content of the eggs of A. purpuratus was diet independent. A greater energy reserve was spent on a larger number of oocytes and not on bigger sized oocytes with a higher lipid content. The lipids supplied through the emulsions were at least partially allocated to the eggs, demonstrating that the fatty acid composition of the eggs could be manipulated, especially the neutral lipid fraction. Levels of EPA changed more rapidly than DHA levels, supporting the observation that they fulfilled an energetic and structural role, respectively. The St-diet supplemented with 50%EmCOCO resulted in a significantly higher fecundity compared to the algal diet supplemented with 25%EmEPA+25%EmDHA and the non-supplemented algal diet. It would seem that saturated fatty acids (SAFA) were more easily or preferentially incorporated in the female gonads of A. purpuratus. The relative content of SAFA and 18:2( n-6) in these eggs rose significantly. The relative content of the highly unsaturated fatty acids, EPA and DHA, on the other hand was substantially lower in the neutral lipid fraction, but hardly affected in the polar lipid fraction. It appeared that the maintenance of an adequate DHA/EPA ratio (approximately 1.2) was more important than the absolute levels of the two fatty acids, as long as a threshold value was reached.  相似文献

The lipid composition of tropical marine reef fishes is poorly known, despite their use as food by local human populations and recent interest in health-related benefits of fish lipids. We examined the composition of lipids from epaxial muscle, liver, and two storage sites [mesenteries surrounding the gut (intraperitoneal fat, IPFs) and retroperitoneal fat bodies (FBs) posterior to the peritoneal cavity] in three species of surgeonfishes from Ishigaki Island, Japan: Naso lituratus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), Acanthurus lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758), and A. bariene (Lesson, 1830). Triacylglycerols dominated all samples of neutral lipid and constituted ≥ 99% of FBs and IPFs. Polar lipids generally contained large fractions of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Quantified fatty acids ranged in length from C14 to C24. C16 fatty acids prevailed (>35% of neutral fatty acids, >23% of polar fatty acids), although C18 (>16 and >14%, respectively) and C20 acids (>8 and >19%, respectively) were also common. Saturated fatty acids, dominated by palmitic acid (16:0), comprised 38.7 to 50.7% of acids from neutral lipids and 30.8 to 41.1% from polar lipids. The most common monounsaturated acids were 18:1n9 and 20:1n9. Polyunsaturated acids were prevalent in polar lipids (especially 20:4n6, 20:5n3, 22:2n3, 22:5n3, 22:5n6 and 22:6n3). Common polyunsaturated acids of neutral lipids were 18:2n6, 18:4n3, several n-3 and n-6 C20 acids, 22:2n3 and 22:5n3. IPF and FB were almost identical across species, and lipids of fat bodies (IPFs, FBs) were more similar to those of muscle than those of liver for all three species. The FBs appear to constitute an accessory storage site, which overcomes constraints on lipid storage imposed by a small, inflexible abdominal cavity that contains both viscera and consistently voluminous gut contents. Fatty acid signatures indicate that largely overlooked epiphytic or epilithic diatoms contribute significantly to lipid acquisition. The combination of large quantities of both saturated and n-3 and other polyunsaturated fatty acids in surgeonfishes, in contrast to low saturates and high polyunsaturated acids in lipids of commercially important cool-water fishes, suggests that a study of dietary effects of fish lipids on human inhabitants of the tropics may be instructive insofar as human health and nutrition are concerned. Nylon bags containing yellow leaves of Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia marina, were immersed for 80 days from August to October, 1996. the decomposing leaves were collected every 10 days and analysed for dry weight loss and six biochemical parameters: tannins, total amino acids, total sugars, total nitrogen, total lipids and fatty acid profile. the leaf weight initially decreased very rapidly by about 50% of the start in two species of mangroves within 10 days. Similar changes were observed with tannins, total amino acids and sugars. However, the concentration of nitrogen increased significantly with decomposition. There was no significant change in total lipid and fatty acid profile. the highest concentration of fatty acid in the decomposing leaves was palmitic acid (16:0). Juvenile salmon exhibit high growth rates upon their arrival into the marine environment. Dietary changes from freshwater and estuarine habitats to those derived from the marine environment may play an important role in ultimate adult survival. We measured the total lipid and fatty acid (FA) composition of juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), coho salmon (O. kisutch), and 18 of their potential prey items sampled from coastal waters during their first few months at sea. Coho salmon had significant reductions in their lipid content (% wet weight) between May and June, likely due to early marine growth. We did not find a significant drop between May and June Chinook salmon lipid content, which may indicate an earlier ontogenetic selection to marine prey that are higher in lipids and essential fatty acids (EFAs). Juvenile salmon ate prey of both high and low lipids. Significant FA compositional changes occurred for both coho and Chinook salmon between May and June. In May, the FA profile of juvenile salmon, especially coho salmon, did not resemble their prey items; however, in June, there was a strong correlation between salmon and their common fish prey as determined by gut content analysis. Significant increases in the level of EFAs, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) accounted for the majority of the monthly differences in salmon tissue FA composition. In order for juvenile salmon to adequately meet their physiological requirements, they may have adapted to select advantageous prey with higher levels of EFAs, especially DHA, in order to rapidly increase their growth and ultimate survival.  相似文献

Seasonal lipid dynamics of the copepod Pseudocalanus acuspes were studied in the Bornholm Basin (Central Baltic Sea) on a monthly basis from March 2002 until March 2003 and were interpreted in light of life cycle strategies and diet selection. The individual total lipid content of females ranged from 0.9 to 1.8 μg, with relative wax ester content reaching a significant maximum in May (44% of total lipids) and minimum (17% of total lipids) in April and November. Significant changes in size, lipid content, lipid classes and fatty acid composition of structural as well as storage lipids suggested five characteristic seasonal phases that were induced by different feeding histories and environmental conditions. Storage lipids were characterized by 18:1(n−9) as major component, which ranged between 44% of total fatty acids in June and 23% in February. The strong coherence between 18:1(n−9) in the seston lipids and the occurrence of ciliates emphasized the importance of ciliates in the diet of P. acuspes. As indicated by changes in the amounts of fatty acid markers, other food sources varied over the year, suggesting an opportunistic feeding behavior. The spring period was characterized by an increase in typical diatom and dinoflagellate markers, whereas other sources, potentially cyanobacteria, became more important during summer. The life cycle strategy is discussed with respect to extant adaptations to high latitudinal habitats.  相似文献

A 6-week feeding trial was conducted with 44-d-old European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) in order to examine the effect of various dietary phospholipid (PL) sources on the incorporation of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in tissue lipids. From weaning onwards the fish received diets prepared by coating different lipid fractions (7.5% diet) on an extruded basal diet (92.5% diet). The two PL-free control diets contained 0.5 and 2% of an emulsifier blend, respectively. Seven other diets contained 2% PL, differing by their purity and origin (vegetable or animal). All diets were rendered isolipidic by the addition of hydrogenated coconut oil. Feeding the PL-supplemented diets, except the diet containing hydrolyzed soybean PL (lyso PL), resulted in a higher survival and a 10 to 30% better growth as compared to the PL-free diets. No difference according to the PL origin was observed. The sea bass final lipid content increased with increasing body weight. Also the lipid class composition of the fish was clearly correlated with the final weight gain. Total neutral lipid increased from 51% of total lipid (initial fish) to 76% for fish fed the PL-free diets, and up to 88% for fish fed the sunflower PL. Weaning the fish on the experimental diets induced important changes in their fatty acid profiles characterized by a decrease in 18:3n-3, 20:5n-3 and 20:4n-6 and an increase in saturated fatty acids and 22:6n-3 (DHA). According to the fatty acid composition of both total and polar lipid, the weaned fish could be divided into three groups reflecting the dietary fatty acids: a group fed the vegetable PL, a group fed the animal PL and a PL-deprived group. An effect of dietary PL on the incorporation of dietary n-3 HUFA, more particularly DHA, was noticed. For a similar supply of DHA through the neutral lipids in the diet, fish fed PL-supplemented diets (except for the lyso PL diet) had 10 to 25% higher DHA levels in total and polar lipid than PL-deprived fish. This PL effect was already clear at the end of the weaning and was not related to the presence of n-3 HUFA in the PL source, as suspected in a previous study when feeding egg yolk PL. A better incorporation of DHA was not obtained by replacing the PL by an emulsifier or by lyso PL with higher emulsifying properties. This paper reports on the firstPhaeocystis sp. (hereafterPhaeocystis) bloom in the Arabian Gulf. Total lipids from threePhaeocystis colonies sampled in November 1987 and in March and May 1988, comprised ca 11.0% of the dry biomass. Triacylglycerols (TG) and/or free fatty acids (FA) predominated in the lipids of all three samples. Polar lipids consisted of mixtures of phospholipids and glycolipids. Diacylglycerotrimethylhomoserines (DGTH) were present in all extracts, whilst conventional phospholipids only occurred in low concentrations. The predominant glycolipids were monogalactosyldiacylglycerols (MGDG) digalactosyldiacylglycerols (DGDG), sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerols (SQDG) and steryl glycosides (SG). The predominant fatty acids in the total lipids of all three samples were palmitic (16:0) and oleic (18:1) acids. Total lipids of the November sample contained the smallest proportion of palmitic and the largest of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) — especially C16. The proportion of PUFA was considerable in individual polar lipids. C16 PUFA were more common in individual polar lipid classes of the November and March samples than that of May. The concentration of constituent C18 PUFA was relatively low. PUFA with chains longer than 18 C atoms only occurred in very low concentrations, and were confined to certain polar and nonpolar lipid classes of the November sample only.  相似文献

A build-up of reserve lipid, predominantly wax esters, occurred during the summer in the copepod Calanus hyperboreas, collected off an Arctic ice-island. This lipid storage was correlated with a phytoplankton bloom and was followed by a progressive decrease of lipid from 2.1 mg per individual in September to 0.4 mg in June. There was a rapid decrease in lipid utilization between October and December, followed by much slower decreases until June. Lowered respiration rates or the availability of different types or quantities of food in the winter and spring are possible explantions for the slower rate of lipid use. Laboratory starvation experiments for up to 90 days correlated with results from the field. Gas-liquid chromatographic studies of the lipids showed that both the alcohols and fatty acids of the wax esters were highly variable with season and depth, whereas the phospholipid fatty acids were not affected by changes in these parameters. Only summer samples bad wax esters with a phytoplankton-like fatty acid composition, and upper water winter copepods had wax esters with little polyunsaturation. The deep-water winter copepods had a very different wax-ester composition from the upper water samples, with a predominance of hexadecanol (all other copepod samples had 20:1 and 22:11 as the principal alcohols) and a high content of polyunsaturated acids. Deep-water C. hyperboreas may differ in food habits and life history from those in the upper water community.  相似文献

The composition of lipids and fatty acids was determined for the livers, muscle, pancreas, kidney and stomach fluids of deepwater chondrichthyan species (including 11 squaliformes, 3 chimaeriformes, 1 hexanchiforme and 3 carcharhiniformes) caught as bycatch from continental waters off south-eastern Australia. The lipid class, fatty acid and fatty alcohol composition differed markedly in each tissue and in each species. The lipid and fatty acid composition of large, lipid-rich (38–70% wet weight, ww) livers demonstrated the multifunctional role of this organ in: lipid distribution, storage and biosynthesis, and buoyancy regulation. In the liver, the importance of certain lipids (including squalene, diacylglyceryl ethers, triacylglycerols and to a lesser extent wax esters) as mediators of buoyancy varied according to lifestyle and habitat. Less variability was observed in the muscle profiles, characterized by low lipid content (<1.0% ww) and high relative levels of polar lipids (>70%). The lipid and fatty acid profiles of the kidney and pancreas showed the highest intraspecific variability, suggesting these organs also have complex roles in lipid storage and metabolism. Overall intra- and interspecific differences in the tissue fatty acid profiles could be related to differences in a number of factors including phylogeny, habitat (depth), buoyancy regulation and diet and presumably also reflect different ecological roles. The lipid and fatty acid profiles are the first published for Rhinochimaera pacifica, Chimaera lignaria and Figaro boardmani and the first to demonstrate interspecific variation in lipid profiles of various tissues of deepwater chondrichthyans. The application of multivariate analysis to lipid class and fatty acid tissue profiles in chondrichthyans inferred dietary differences and metabolic preferences between species and habitats. These results have important implications for the future use of fatty acids as dietary tracers in chondrichthyan research.  相似文献

Study of the ecology of mesopelagic fishes is central for assessing the active biological pump in the ocean, especially in the mesopelagic layers. The use of δ13C and fatty acid analysis can help to analysis the ecology of mesopelagic fishes. Here, we analysed the fatty acid composition of mesopelagic fishes from the continental northern slope of the South China Sea (NSSCS) and compared with nearshore SCS fishes and mesopelagic fishes collected from the Southern Ocean. The mesopelagic fishes had unusually high lipids, which resulted in Δδ13C values exceeding 1‰, more than the enrichment factor in the food web. The mesopelagic fishes had higher C18:1n-9/C18:1n-7 and C20:1n-9/ C18:1n-7 ratios compared with other fishes in the SCS, which confirmed that plankton were their main dietary source. The mesopelagic fishes from SCS and Southern Ocean had different ratios of C20:5n-3/C22:6n-3 (EPA/DHA), suggesting geographical locations and diet sources had obvious influence on their fatty acid composition. The SCS mesopelagic fishes had higher C20:4n-6/C22:6n-3 (ARA/DHA) and C20:4n-6/C20:5n-3 (ARA/EPA) ratios than mesopelagic fishes in the Southern Ocean, indicating the influence of physical factors on fatty acid composition. Thus, future studies of the fatty acids in mesopelagic fishes should consider both dietary sources and physical environments.  相似文献

Aeolidiella stephanieae is a stenophagous tropical nudibranch that feeds exclusively on glass anemones of the genus Aiptasia. These sea anemones usually harbour endosymbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that contribute to the nutrition of their host by providing photosynthetates, such as fatty acids (FA). The present work determined the effect of parental diets on the FA profile of A. stephanieae embryos by feeding breeding pairs of this nudibranch with either symbiotic or aposymbiotic A. pallida. Contrasting FA profiles, namely in the levels of palmitic acid (16:0) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), were recorded for both parental diets and egg masses produced by nudibranchs eating either symbiotic or aposymbiotic A. pallida. Noteworthy effects of parental dietary FAs on egg masses were also observed, particularly for DHA, which is mainly synthetized by the endosymbionts of A. pallida. Additionally, the present study also highlights how bleaching events may promote cascading effects on the nutrition of marine species with a stenophagous diet, such as A. stephanieae.  相似文献
