Fabric filtration systems have been employed in industry for over a century with relatively few technological modifications. However, with the recent substantial increase in energy costs, conservation in energy consumption has become vitally important. As a result, the filtration systems of yesteryear may not be the best approach for future applications. Recently, an external electrical field was considered in fabric filtration of industrial dust with very promising initial results. An increase in the collection efficiency, particularly for fine particulates, and a decrease in the pressure drop was observed. In this paper the further results of an experimental program in the investigation of pressure drop in the electrostatic fabric filtration in industrial dust control are presented. The basic apparatus, a bench-scale electrostatic fabric filtration system, creates a representative dust cake under specific conditions of operating parameters and charge levels. The results clearly indicate that filter and dust cake resistance, or pressure drop, decreases substantially with the increased electrostatic field strength for all industrial dust samples tested, regardless of fabric type and other relevant parameters.  相似文献

Material prepared for Connecticut's 1979 State Implementation Plan (SIP) submittal indicates that transportation related sources contribute more than half of total suspended particulates (TSP) emissions. The SIP's conclusions are strikingly different from earlier estimates of TSP attributable to the transportation sector. The conclusions mandate additional measurements and analyses to document source contributions. Of greater importance is the development of TSP control measures because Connecticut's ability to maintain an adequate transportation system and to accommodate stationary source, commercial and industrial growth are affected. Possible control measures must consider control of exhaust emissions, a source control program, and control of reentrained road dust having characteristics of a fugitive emissions control program. Current programs are discussed and analyzed where sufficient data exists. Technical methodology and administrative responsibilities are discussed. Insights of future program needs are presented.  相似文献

In a number of metropolitan areas of the country, failure to attain national primary air quality standards for total suspended particulates (TSP) has fostered a detailed reexamination of the nature of the urban TSP problem. Reentrained dust from paved streets and other traffic-related emissions are now recognized as major sources of TSP in urban areas. While numerous reports and studies have examined this subject, some significant aspects of urban road dust have not been studied in enough detail, if at all. Examples of this are the effects of gutters and pavement composition and shape. This paper discusses those areas of the urban road dust problem that are felt to require further attention and outlines the priorities with which the data should be obtained.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons extracted and concentrated from diesel exhaust particulates have been shown to be mutagenic and carcinogenic, but attempts to induce pulmonary tumors through chronic inhalation of diesel exhaust by experimental animals have failed. We have attempted to resolve this incongruity by measuring chromosomal damage in lung tissue of chronically exposed hamsters, using the highly sensitive test for genotoxic chemical agents, sister chromatid exchange (SCE) analysis. To determine the degree of responsiveness of the test system to both diesel exhaust particulates and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), these agents were instilled intratracheally into anesthetized hamsters as suspensions in 0.25 ml volumes of Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS). Lung tissues from these animals were subsequently cultured in vitro and chromosomes from the resulting cell divisions were scored for exchanges of chromatin between sister chromatids. Control animals, treated weekly with 0.25 ml of BSS for 10 weeks, showed an average value of 12 SCE's per cell, while animals treated weekly with 200 ng BaP over a 10-week period showed an average of 17 SCE's per cell. HBSS, given as a single treatment, also produced an average of 12 SCE's per cell in control animals, but animals treated with a single instillation of 12.5 μg BaP showed an average SCE value of 19. These data confirmed that the procarcinogen BaP can be metabolically activated by lung cells in vivo and also demonstrated the efficacy of using this technical approach to study the effect of chemical mutagens that enter the lungs. Diesel exhaust particulates, administered in a range from 0 to 20 mg per hamster over a 24 h exposure period, produced a linear SCE dose-response ranging from 12 to 26 SCE's per metaphase. This curve suggested that a concentration of 3 mg of diesel particulates per hamster would not produce a statistically significant increase in SCE's above control values. One group of 8 hamsters, chronically exposed to diesel exhaust particulates for 3 months showed an average of 12 SCE's per cell. This was equivalent to a set of 5 control animals which also showed an average of 12 SCE's per cell. Although the scope of this study was limited, the data demonstrated that diesel exhaust particulates can induce genotoxic damage but a 3-month exposure to 6 mg/m3 of diesel exhaust particulates was insufficient to produce measurable mutagenic changes in lung cells. This negative response is consistent with the results from other studies in which similar exposures failed to produce pulmonary tumors.  相似文献

Indoor air quality was examined for some gaseous pollutants and particulate matters. In a public library, the indoor/outdoor ratio of gaseous pollutants were found to be dependent on their reactivity, also on the outdoor concentrations and weather conditions. This ratio was 0.6 for SO2,and 1.3 for CO. The indoor/outdoor ratio of carbon monoxide was found to increase at the higher floors of the same building. Concentrations of indoor particulates was found to be influenced by the outdoor concentrations and the particle size. Analysis indicated that indoor suspended dust contained a significant high concentration of lead as compared with outdoor values. Indoor sources were found to pollute the premises of fossil-fuel equipped homes, thus having carbon monoxide concentrations more than the recognized threshold limit value for industry.  相似文献

Samples of atmospheric particulate matter obtained from representative areas of the city of Baghdad were collected on glass fiber filters using a high-volume sampler. Atomic absorption techniques were used to analyze the total suspended particulates (TSP) for the following trace metals; Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, Cr, Cd, Co, and Hg. Sulfates were measured by turbidemetric method. Ion-selective electrodes was used for chloride analysis. It is concluded that the major components of TSP in the ambient air of Baghdad consist of mineral dust. Pb and Cd gave high enrichment factor values, which implies enrichment of these two metals from anthropogenic sources. High enrichment factors were also obtained for Zn and Cu. It is also concluded that in this arid area, the black smoke reflectance method is not suitable for measuring total suspended matter gravimetrically.  相似文献

This is a review of investigations conducted to evaluate portable, direct reading instruments employing the principles of light scattering and the attenuation of beta-rays to measure the respirable mass concentration of airborne particulates. Data are presented on comparative measurements obtained with several different models of beta-ray attenuation instruments manufactured by the GCA Corporation and light scattering instruments manufactured by GCA Corporation, USA, Ernst Leitz, GmbH, Germany, Rotheroe and Mitchell, England, and Sibata Chemical Apparatus Manufacturing Company, Ltd., Japan, using aerosols of coal, limestone, Arizona road dust, and silica. The effect of aerosol parameters (concentration, size distribution, index of refraction) on instrument calibration and precision are discussed.  相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are present in many consumer goods. There is evidence that PBDEs are toxic to humans, particular young children. The purpose of this study was to assess indoor dust as an exposure source for PBDEs. Concentrations of 16 PBDEs were determined in dust samples from 33 households in New Zealand, and in breast milk samples from 33 mothers living in these households. Associations between dust and breast milk PBDE concentrations were assessed, and children's PBDE intake from breast milk and dust estimated. Influences of household and demographic factors on PBDE concentrations in dust were investigated. Indoor dust concentrations ranged from 0.1 ng/g for BDE17 to 2500 ng/g for BDE209. Breast milk concentrations were positively correlated (p < 0.05) with mattress dust concentrations for BDE47, BDE153, BDE154, and BDE209 and with floor dust for BDE47, BDE183, BDE206, and BDE209. The correlation for BDE209 between dust and breast milk is a novel finding. PBDE concentrations in floor dust were lower from households with new carpets. The estimated children's daily intake of PBDEs from dust and breast milk was below U.S. EPA Reference Dose values. The study shows that dust is an important human exposure source for common PBDE formulations in New Zealand.  相似文献

Assessment of indoor exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) requires a critical examination of methods that may influence exposure estimates and comparisons between studies. We measured PBDEs in residential dust collected from 20 homes in Boston, MA, to examine 5 key questions: 1) Does the choice of dust exposure metric-e.g., concentration (ng/g) or dust loading (ng/m2)-affect analysis and results? 2) To what degree do dust concentrations change over time? 3) Do dust concentrations vary between rooms? 4) Is the home vacuum bag an acceptable surrogate for researcher-collected dust? 5) Are air and dust concentrations correlated for the same room? We used linear mixed-effects models to analyze the data while accounting for within-home and within-room correlations. We found that PBDE dust concentration and surface loading were highly correlated (r=0.86-0.95, p<0.001). Average dust concentrations did not significantly differ over an 8-month period, possibly because home furnishings changed little over this time. We observed significant differences between rooms in the same home: PBDE concentrations in the main living area were 97% higher than the bedroom for decaBDE (p=0.02) and 72% higher for pentaBDE (p=0.05). Home vacuum bag dust concentrations were significantly lower than researcher-collected dust and not strongly correlated. Air (vapor and particulate phase) and dust concentrations were correlated for pentaBDE (p=0.62, p<0.01), but not for decaBDE (p=0.25). In addition, potential markers of BDE 209 debromination (BDE 202 and the BDE197:BDE201 ratio) were also observed in household dust samples. One vacuum bag sample contained the highest concentrations of BDE 209 (527,000 ng/g) and total PBDEs (544,000 ng/g) that have been reported in house dust.  相似文献

Personal exposures via ingestion of indoor dust to α-, β-, and γ-hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) and the degradation products (pentabromocyclododecenes (PBCDs) and tetrabromocyclododecadienes (TBCDs)) were estimated for 21 UK adults. Under an average dust ingestion scenario, personal exposures ranged from 4.5 to 1851 ng ΣHBCDs day? 1; while the range under a high dust ingestion scenario was 11 to 4630 ng ΣHBCDs day? 1. On average, personal exposure to ΣHBCDs via dust ingestion in this study was 35% α-, 11% β-, and 54% γ-HBCD. However, while exposure to β-HBCD (4–18% of ΣHBCDs) was relatively consistent with the proportion of this diastereomer in the HBCD commercial formulation; exposures to α- and γ-isomers (11–58% and 29–82% of ΣHBCDs respectively) showed substantial variation from the commercial formulation pattern. Personal exposures to ΣTBCDs (median = 0.2 ng day? 1 under an average dust ingestion scenario) and ΣPBCDs (1.4 ng day? 1) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than for ΣHBCDs (48 ng day? 1). Despite this, the exposure of one participant to ΣPBCDs exceeded the exposure to ΣHBCDs received by 85% of the other participants. On average, house dust provided the major contribution to personal exposure via dust ingestion to all target compounds due to the large time fraction spent in houses. In contrast, although participants spent less time in cars than in offices, car dust makes a higher average contribution (17%) to ΣHBCDs exposure than office dust (13%).  相似文献

A novel technique, gas chromatography-UV spectrometry (GC-UV), was used to quantify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in settled dust from 389 residences in Sweden. The dust samples were thermally desorbed in an inert atmosphere and evaporated compounds were concentrated by solid phase micro extraction and separated by capillary GC. Eluting compounds were then detected, identified, and quantified using a diode array UV spectrophotometer. Altogether, 28 compounds were quantified in each sample; 24 of these were found in more than 50% of the samples. The compounds found in highest concentrations were saturated aldehydes (C5-C10), furfuryl alcohol, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), 2-furaldehyde, and benzaldehyde. Alkenals were also found, notably 2-butenal (crotonaldehyde), 2-methyl-propenal (methacrolein), hexenal, heptenal, octenal, and nonenal. The concentrations of each of the 28 compounds ranged between two to three orders of magnitude, or even more. These results demonstrate the presence of a number of VOCs in indoor dust, and provide, for the first time, a quantitative determination of these compounds in a larger number of dust samples from residents. The findings also illustrate the potential use of GC-UV for analysing volatile compounds in indoor dust, some of which are potential irritants (to the skin, eyes or respiratory system) if present at higher concentrations. The potential use of GC-UV for improving survey and control of the human exposure to particle-bound irritants and other chemicals is inferred.  相似文献

For researches on toxic chemicals in settled indoor dust, selection of dust fraction is a critical influencing factor to the accuracy of human exposure risk assessment results. However, analysis of the selection of dust fraction in recent studies revealed that there is no consensus. This study classified and presented researches on distribution of toxic chemicals according to dust particle size and on relationship between dust particle size and human exposure possibility. According to the literature, beyond the fact that there were no consistent conclusions on particle size distribution of adherent fraction, dust with particle size less than 100 μm should be paid more attention and that larger than 250 μm is neither adherent nor proper for human exposure risk assessment. Calculation results based on literature data show that with different selections of dust fractions, analytical results of toxic chemicals would vary up to 10-fold, which means that selecting dust fractions arbitrarily will lead to large errors in risk assessment of human exposure to toxic chemicals in settled dust. Taking into account the influence of dust particle size on risk assessment of human exposure to toxic chemicals, a new methodology for risk assessment of human exposure to toxic chemicals in settled indoor dust is proposed and human exposure parameter systems to settled indoor dust are advised to be established at national and regional scales all over the world.  相似文献

There is a growing need in the field of exposure science for monitoring methods that rapidly screen environmental media for suspect contaminants. Measurement and analysis platforms, based on high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), now exist to meet this need. Here we describe results of a study that links HRMS data with exposure predictions from the U.S. EPA's ExpoCast™ program and in vitro bioassay data from the U.S. interagency Tox21 consortium. Vacuum dust samples were collected from 56 households across the U.S. as part of the American Healthy Homes Survey (AHHS). Sample extracts were analyzed using liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC–TOF/MS) with electrospray ionization. On average, approximately 2000 molecular features were identified per sample (based on accurate mass) in negative ion mode, and 3000 in positive ion mode. Exact mass, isotope distribution, and isotope spacing were used to match molecular features with a unique listing of chemical formulas extracted from EPA's Distributed Structure-Searchable Toxicity (DSSTox) database. A total of 978 DSSTox formulas were consistent with the dust LC–TOF/molecular feature data (match score  90); these formulas mapped to 3228 possible chemicals in the database. Correct assignment of a unique chemical to a given formula required additional validation steps. Each suspect chemical was prioritized for follow-up confirmation using abundance and detection frequency results, along with exposure and bioactivity estimates from ExpoCast and Tox21, respectively. Chemicals with elevated exposure and/or toxicity potential were further examined using a mixture of 100 chemical standards. A total of 33 chemicals were confirmed present in the dust samples by formula and retention time match; nearly half of these do not appear to have been associated with house dust in the published literature. Chemical matches found in at least 10 of the 56 dust samples include Piperine, N,N-Diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET), Triclocarban, Diethyl phthalate (DEP), Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TDCPP), and Nicotine. This study demonstrates a novel suspect screening methodology to prioritize chemicals of interest for subsequent targeted analysis. The methods described here rely on strategic integration of available public resources and should be considered in future non-targeted and suspect screening assessments of environmental and biological media.  相似文献

An experimental apparatus has been constructed to investigate aerosol filtration by a cocurrent moving granular bed filter (CMGBF). In a CMGBF, aerosol passes downward through a descending bed of dirty granules while clean granules are added continously at the bed top. The effect of an intergranular dust deposit on penetration in a CMGBF was investigated in a 24 factorial experiment in which the control variables were superficial gas velocity (100 and 250 mm/s), bed depth (130 and 230 mm), granule size (2.1 and 2.7 mm), and the intergranular dust deposit expressed as percent by weight of collected dust in the bed (1% and 5%). All tests were conducted at ambient temperature and pressure using resuspended utility boiler fly ash as the test aerosol.Mass penetration data identified two major penetration mechanisms: (1) straight through penetration and (2) reentrainment due to granular motion. A static, intergranular dust deposit produced high filtration efficiency (>99%) at the low superficial velocity. When the bed was moving, reentrainment of collected dust was significant and accounted for about three-quarters of the penetrating dust. Particle size analyses reveal that the two penetration mechanisms are size dependent. Most particles larger than about one micrometer in diameter that penetrate the CMGBF do so by reentrainment after being collected initially. Virtually no particles smaller than about 0.3 μm in diameter penetrate by reentrainment; when these small particles penetrate, they pass straight through without being collected.  相似文献

Human corneal epithelial (HCE) cells are continually exposed to dust in the air, which may cause corneal epithelium damage. Both water and organic soluble contaminants in dust may contribute to cytotoxicity in HCE cells, however, the associated toxicity mechanisms are not fully elucidated. In this study, indoor dust from residential houses and commercial offices in Nanjing, China was collected and the effects of organic and water soluble fraction of dust on primary HCE cells were examined. The concentrations of heavy metals in the dust and dust extracts were determined by ICP-MS and PAHs by GC–MS, with office dust having greater concentrations of heavy metals and PAHs than house dust. Based on LC50, organic extract was more toxic than water extract, and office dust was more toxic than house dust. Accordingly, the organic extracts induced more ROS, malondialdehyde, and 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine and higher expression of inflammatory mediators (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8), and AhR inducible genes (CYP1A1, and CYP1B1) than water extracts (p < 0.05). Extracts of office dust presented greater suppression of superoxide dismutase and catalase activity than those of house dust. In addition, exposure to dust extracts activated NF-κB signal pathway except water extract of house dust. The results suggested that both water and organic soluble fractions of dust caused cytotoxicity, oxidative damage, inflammatory response, and activation of AhR inducible genes, with organic extracts having higher potential to induce adverse effects on primary HCE cells. The results based on primary HCE cells demonstrated the importance of reducing contaminants in indoor dust to reduce their adverse impacts on human eyes.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Mold growth is believed to be one causative factor underlying the association between dampness in buildings and increased respiratory morbidity. Measurements of beta(1-->3)-glucans and fungal extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) are used as markers of mold exposure in field studies. Little is known about their levels and determinants in homes. OBJECTIVE: To study levels and determinants of beta(1-->3)-glucan and EPS levels in mattress and living room floor dust in three European countries. METHODS: Mattress and living room floor dust was collected in the homes of 1065 German, Dutch, and Swedish (pre-)school children. All samples were analyzed for beta(1-->3)-glucans and EPS in one central laboratory. Determinants were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS: Amounts of dust, EPS and beta(1-->3)-glucan levels differed between countries. Amounts of dust, beta(1-->3)-glucan and EPS levels for mattresses were only weakly correlated with those for living room floors. Floor dust beta(1-->3)-glucan loads, EPS loads and EPS concentrations were strongly correlated with the amount of dust sampled, which is largely determined by the type of floor that was sampled (carpeted floors had 5-20 higher amounts of dust). None of the other determinants was consistently and statistically significantly associated with amounts of dust, beta(1-->3)-glucan and EPS concentrations on floors and mattresses. CONCLUSION: Mattress dust and floor dust are two different measures of exposure to the investigated mold components. Living room floor beta(1-->3)-glucan and EPS loads and EPS concentrations are largely determined by the type of floor sampled. Differences between countries can only partly be explained by the determinants studied.  相似文献

Epidemiological data has demonstrated that environmental and/or occupational exposure to mineral particulates may result in the development of pulmonary fibrosis, bronchogenic carcinoma and malignant mesothelioma many years following exposure. It has been suggested that the genotoxic effects of fibrous particulates, such as asbestos, is due in part to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from iron associated with the particulates. However, the molecular mechanisms by which mineral particulates induce ROS that results in genotoxic damage remains unclear. The naturally occurring zeolites, erionite and mordenite share several physiochemical properties but they elicit very different biological responses, with erionite, a fibrous particulate, being highly toxic, and mordenite, a nonfibrous particulate, being relatively benign. We are using these natural zeolites as a model system to determine what physicochemical properties of these zeolites are responsible for their biological response(s) and to evaluate the parameters that influence these responses. The purpose of the present study was to determine the mutagenic potential of erionite and mordenite and to determine whether this mutagenic potential was modulated by iron. The results of this study using the Chinese hamster ovary cell line AS52 demonstrated that erionite was more cytotoxic than mordenite. However, the cytotoxicity of both zeolites was increased in the presence of physiological concentrations of ferrous chloride. Ferrous ions (5-20 microM) significantly (p<0.001) increased the cytotoxicity of mordenite, but only at the highest concentration (16 microg/cm(2)) of mordenite tested. Conversely, only the highest concentration (20 microM) of ferrous ion significantly (p<0.001) increased the cytotoxicity of erionite, but this enhanced cytotoxicity occurred over a wider concentration range (6-16 microg/cm(2)) of erionite. Mordenite was not mutagenic at any of the concentrations tested, and the mutagenic potential of mordenite was not enhanced by the addition of ferrous ion. Conversely, erionite was mutagenic in a dose-response manner at concentrations greater than 6 microg/cm(2) and the mutagenic potential of erionite was significantly enhanced by the addition of ferrous ions. These results suggest that while the cytotoxicity of mordenite and erionite may be related to the ability of these fibers to transport iron into a cell, the different coordination state of iron associated with the two fiber surfaces is critical for inducing genotoxic damage.  相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are lipophilic, persistent pollutants found worldwide in environmental and human samples. Exposure pathways for PBDEs remain unclear but may include food, air and dust. The aim of this study was to conduct an integrated assessment of PBDE exposure and human body burden using 10 matched samples of human milk, indoor air and dust collected in 2007–2008 in Brisbane, Australia. In addition, temporal analysis was investigated comparing the results of the current study with PBDE concentrations in human milk collected in 2002–2003 from the same region.PBDEs were detected in all matrices and the median concentrations of BDEs -47 and -209 in human milk, air and dust were: 4.2 and 0.3 ng/g lipid; 25 and 7.8 pg/m3; and 56 and 291 ng/g dust, respectively. Significant correlations were observed between the concentrations of BDE-99 in air and human milk (r = 0.661, p = 0.038) and BDE-153 in dust and BDE-183 in human milk (r = 0.697, p = 0.025). These correlations do not suggest causal relationships — there is no hypothesis that can be offered to explain why BDE-153 in dust and BDE-183 in milk are correlated. The fact that so few correlations were found in the data could be a function of the small sample size, or because additional factors, such as sources of exposure not considered or measured in the study, might be important in explaining exposure to PBDEs. There was a slight decrease in PBDE concentrations from 2002–2003 to 2007–2008 but this may be due to sampling and analytical differences. Overall, average PBDE concentrations from these individual samples were similar to results from pooled human milk collected in Brisbane in 2002–2003 indicating that pooling may be an efficient, cost-effective strategy of assessing PBDE concentrations on a population basis. The results of this study were used to estimate an infant's daily PBDE intake via inhalation, dust ingestion and human milk consumption. Differences in PBDE intake of individual congeners from the different matrices were observed. Specifically, as the level of bromination increased, the contribution of PBDE intake decreased via human milk and increased via dust. As the impacts of the ban of the lower brominated (penta- and octa-BDE) products become evident, an increased use of the higher brominated deca-BDE product may result in dust making a greater contribution to infant exposure than it does currently. To better understand human body burden, further research is required into the sources and exposure pathways of PBDEs and metabolic differences influencing an individual's response to exposure. In addition, temporal trend analysis is necessary with continued monitoring of PBDEs in the human population as well as in the suggested exposure matrices of food, dust and air.  相似文献

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are large production volume chemicals used in a wide variety of commercial applications. They are ubiquitous in the environment and humans. Human exposure via the indoor environment has, however, been barely investigated. In the present study 44 indoor air and six dust samples from apartments in Stockholm, Sweden, were analyzed for CPs, and indoor air concentrations are reported for the first time. The sumCP concentration (short chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium chain CPs (MCCPs)) in air ranged from <5-210 ng m(-3) as quantified by gas chromatography coupled to electron ionization tandem mass spectrometry (GC/EI-MS/MS). Congener group patterns were studied using GC with electron capture negative ionization MS (GC/ECNI-MS). The air samples were dominated by the more volatile SCCPs compared to MCCPs. SumCPs were quantified by GC/EI-MS/MS in the dust samples at low μg g(-1) levels, with a chromatographic pattern suggesting the prevalence of longer chain CPs compared to air. The median exposure to sumCPs via the indoor environment was estimated to be ~1 μg day(-1) for both adults and toddlers. Adult exposure was dominated by inhalation, while dust ingestion was suggested to be more important for toddlers. Comparing these results to literature data on dietary intake indicates that human exposure to CPs from the indoor environment is not negligible.  相似文献

Settled house dust can be a source of human exposure to toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through non-dietary ingestion and dermal contact. Information regarding the concentrations of various contaminants in house dust would be useful in estimating the risk associated with exposure to these compounds. This study reports on the surface loading, variability and distribution of PAHs in settled house dust collected from homes in three locations: Sumgayit, Azerbaijan; Shanxi Province, China; and southern Texas, United States. The highest PAH floor surface loadings were observed in China, followed by Azerbaijan and Texas. Median concentrations of high molecular weight (four ring and larger) PAHs ranged from a low of 0.11 microg/m(2) in Texas, to 2.9 microg/m(2) in Azerbaijan and 162 microg/m(2) in China. These trends in total surface loading and relative carcinogenicity indicate that the risk of health effects from exposure to PAHs in house dust is highest in the Chinese population and lowest in the Texas population. As anticipated, variability among dust samples from different houses within the same region was high, with coefficients of variation greater than 100%. Alkylated PAHs comprised 30-50% of the total mass of PAHs. Based on a comparison of the composition of specific components, PAHs in China and Azerbaijan were determined to be derived mainly from combustion sources rather than from unburned fossil fuels such as petroleum. These results, coupled with ongoing investigation of appropriate PAH exposure biomarkers in humans, will guide future efforts to identify ways to reduce exposures in the study areas.  相似文献
