The distribution of epibenthic penaeid prawn postlarvae has previously been shown to relate to the degree of marine influences in the flora, sediment and water conditions in littoral and infralittoral habitats in Moreton Bay. The postlarvae are part of a complex faunal assemblage of approximately 400 mobile epibenthic species. Samples of the assemblage from stations situated throughout Moreton Bay were analysed by multivariable methods, to detect whether the environmental influences volated to the distribution of penaeid prawns, were related to the fauna as a whole. This was found to be so. The fauna occurred in two groups in areas of either less marine or more marine influences. Animals in the first group were less diverse, with distributions unrelated to depth or presence of seagrasses, but related to the level of marine influences between geographical areas sampled. Animals in the second group were closely related to depth and presence of seagrasses, but no overall differences were attributable to marine influeces apart from those attributable to depth. Temporal changes in species composition were smaller than spatial changes, and changes in relative abundance were, in both groups, related to differences between (i) summer and winter, and (ii) spring and the rest of the year.  相似文献

在对美国环境保护局开发的地下水暴露评价模型进行比较的基础上,选择SCI-GROW模型预测我国福建省甘蔗种植区5种常用农药对地下水的污染风险,并将模型预测结果与该地区地下水中农药的实测结果进行比较,对模型进行验证.结果表明,模型预测结果与实测结果之间具有很好的相关性,SCI-GROW模型能较好地用于我国东南沿海等地下水位较高、降水量较大、土壤砂性等地下水易受污染地区农药的筛选评价.最后,运用SCI-GROW模型预测涕灭威等17种我国常用农药对地下水的污染风险,为这些农药的科学使用提供参考.  相似文献

During the 21st century, climate-driven changes in fire regimes will be a key agent of change in forests of the U.S. Pacific Northwest (PNW). Understanding the response of forest carbon (C) dynamics to increases in fire will help quantify limits on the contribution of forest C storage to climate change mitigation and prioritize forest types for monitoring C storage and fire management to minimize C loss. In this study, we used projections of 21st century area burned to explore the consequences of changes in fire regimes on C dynamics in forests of Washington State. We used a novel empirical approach that takes advantage of chronosequences of C pools and fluxes and statistical properties of fire regimes to explore the effects of shifting age class distributions on C dynamics. Forests of the western Cascades are projected to be more sensitive to climate-driven increases in fire, and thus projected changes in C dynamics, than forests of the eastern Cascades. In the western Cascades, mean live biomass C is projected to decrease by 24-37%, and coarse woody debris (CWD) biomass C by 15-25% for the 2040s. Loss of live biomass C is projected to be lower for forests of the eastern Cascades and Okanogan Highlands (17-26%), and CWD biomass is projected to increase. Landscape mean net primary productivity is projected to increase in wet low-elevation forests of the western Cascades, but decrease elsewhere. These forests, and moist forests of the Okanogan Highlands, are projected to have the greatest percentage increases in consumption of live biomass. Percentage increases in consumption of CWD biomass are greater than 50% for all regions and up to four times greater than increases in consumption of live biomass. Carbon sequestration in PNW forests will be highly sensitive to increases in fire, suggesting a cautious approach to managing these forests for C sequestration to mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions.  相似文献

Predicting the dynamics of ecosystems requires an understanding of how trophic interactions respond to environmental change. In Antarctic marine ecosystems, food web dynamics are inextricably linked to sea ice conditions that affect the nature and magnitude of primary food sources available to higher trophic levels. Recent attention on the changing sea ice conditions in polar seas highlights the need to better understand how marine food webs respond to changes in such broad-scale environmental drivers. This study investigated the importance of sea ice and advected primary food sources to the structure of benthic food webs in coastal Antarctica. We compared the isotopic composition of several seafloor taxa (including primary producers and invertebrates with a variety of feeding modes) that are widely distributed in the Antarctic. We assessed shifts in the trophic role of numerically dominant benthic omnivores at five coastal Ross Sea locations. These locations vary in primary productivity and food availability, due to their different levels of sea ice cover, and proximity to polynyas and advected primary production. The delta15N signatures and isotope mixing model results for the bivalves Laternula elliptica and Adamussium colbecki and the urchin Sterechinus neumeyeri indicate a shift from consumption of a higher proportion of detritus at locations with more permanent sea ice in the south to more freshly produced algal material associated with proximity to ice-free water in the north and east. The detrital pathways utilized by many benthic species may act to dampen the impacts of large seasonal fluctuations in the availability of primary production. The limiting relationship between sea ice distribution and in situ primary productivity emphasizes the role of connectivity and spatial subsidies of organic matter in fueling the food web. Our results begin to provide a basis for predicting how benthic ecosystems will respond to changes in sea ice persistence and extent along environmental gradients in the high Antarctic.  相似文献

Human exposure to engineered nanoparticles has become inevitable in today’s extensive commercial use and large-scale production of engineered nanoparticles. Even though several studies have characterised the exposure to nanomaterials during wakeful state (related to occupational exposures and exposures from commercially available particles), very few studies on human exposure during sleep exist. As the study of exposure to all possible nanomaterials during sleep is extensive, this study focuses on exposure to specifically silver nanoparticles which are present in beddings and mattresses. The reasoning behind the use of silver nanoparticles in bedding and related materials, possible routes of entry to various population groups in several sleep positions, exposure characterisation and toxicity potential of such silver nanoparticles are reviewed in this study. The toxicity potential of silver nanoparticles in vivo tests with relation to mammals and in vitro tests on human cells has been tabulated to understand the risks associated during oral, dermal and inhalation exposure to silver nanoparticles. The exposure to humans with regard to dermal absorption and oral intake has been summarised. Although potential inhalation exposure to silver nanoparticles is increasing, only a few studies address the possible toxic effect of inhaled silver particles. Determination of exposure to silver nanoparticles in beddings is a topic that has been less researched, and this review aims to provide background information for future research and help establish a comprehensive risk assessment during sleep in the times of increasing usage of nanoparticles in our daily activities. Despite the current limitations of our understanding, risk assessments must utilise the available data and apply extrapolation procedures in the face of uncertainty, in order to address the needs of regulatory programs. This would enable safe use of the antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles without negatively impacting human health. Until then, it would be better to adopt a conservative approach on the usage of silver nanoparticles in daily used commercial items.

Summary The aim of the experiment was to test the hypothesis that pigeons depend on route- and/or site-specific airborne parameters to establish their position relative to the loft. Pigeons were transported to the release site with free access to the environmental air. They were then enclosed in large airtight containers filled with air from the release site and either transported via the loft to a release site in the opposite direction with respect to the loft (experimental birds) or via the loft back to the same site (control birds). Before release the pigeons (still inside the containers) were made anosmic by a local anesthetic applied to the olfactory membranes through the nostrils. Vanishing bearings of experimental birds were on the average in a direction opposite to home while the vanishing bearings of control birds were homeward oriented. For this initial orientation the pigeons seem to rely on airborne cues obtained at a site where they last had access to ambient air or cues obtained from the air inside the sealed containers. Irrespective of the treatment the bearings pooled with respect to north still show a residual orientation to the NE. There was no difference either in the homing speeds or in the homing times of anosmic control and experimental pigeons. We therefore have to assume further mechanisms guiding the pigeons home in addition to a possibly olfactory one.  相似文献

用XRD和EXAFS方法研究了CuO-ZnO(50:50)CO_2加氢合成甲醇催化剂的结构.XRD研究发现,在催化剂还原前后,分别存在CuO,ZnO和Cu-ZnO晶相.EXAFS研究发现,在CuO-ZnO中,Cu—O,Cu—Cu键长及Cu的氧配位数、Cu的Cu配位数与纯CuO的十分接近,在Cu-ZnO中,Cu—Wu键长、Cu的Cu配位数与纯Cu的十分接近,说明催化剂在还原前后,CU的近邻结构分别与CuO与Cu的十分接近.纯Cu的活性、选择性很低,而Cu-ZnO的活性、选择性较纯Cu的有很大提高,说明催化剂的性能与催化剂中Cu的近邻结构无关.  相似文献

Groundwater in the central part of Argentina contains arsenic concentrations that, in most cases, exceed the value suggested by international regulations. In this region, Quaternary loessical sediments with a very high volcanic glass fraction lixiviate arsenic and fluoride after weathering. The objectives of this study are to analyze the spatial distribution of arsenic in different hydrogeological regions, to define the naturally expected concentration in an aquifer by means of hydrogeochemistry studies, and to identify emergent health evidences related to cancer mortality in the study area. The correlation between arsenic and fluoride concentrations in groundwater is analyzed at each county in the Cordoba Province. Two dimensionless geoindicators are proposed to identify risk zones and to rapidly visualize the groundwater quality related to the presence of arsenic and fluoride. A surface-mapping system is used to identify the spatial variability of concentrations and for suggesting geoindicators. The results show that the Chaco-Pampean plain hydrogeologic region is the most affected area, with arsenic and fluoride concentrations in groundwater being generally higher than the values suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water. Mortality related to kidney, lung, liver, and skin cancer in this area could be associated to the ingestion of arsenic-contaminated water. Generated maps provide a base for the assessment of the risk associated to the natural occurrence of arsenic and fluoride in the region.  相似文献

Summary Parent wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe L.), foraging to meet their own needs and to provide food for a central place (CP, i.e. the nest), have to make decisions with respect to the configuration of foraging itineraries during round trips in the territory and to the directionality of their movements. These problems were studied in two pairs breeding in an agricultural area in central Swecen. All birds started a round trip by hunting from perches close to the CP and then moving to perches progressively further away in a roughly straight line until the first prey item was loaded. Loaded prey were either delivered singly (single prey loading: SPL) or with other prey (multiple prey loading: MPL). When the bird decided to return with several items to the CP, it abruptly changed the direction of its movements by making a left, right or backward turn and started to visit perches progressively nearer the CP, again following a roughly straight line. The decision to return continue loading was affected by the size of the prey as shown by the fact that prey carried singly was significantly larger than the first item in an MPL for all individuals. The distance to the CP also seemed to affect this decision as prey provisioned singly on average were collected significantly closer to the nest than the first item in an MPL by one pair. Both the size of prey loaded singly and load size of MPL increased with distance from the CP in one pair. The concentrated use of the territory in the other pair made any effect of distance difficult to detect. Great flexibility in foraging decisions was observed in cases when an individual, because of the size of the last prey captured, altered its decision to deliver an MPL and transported an SPL to the nest instead. On the basis of these results we propose a set of rules followed by predators such as wheatears when making decisions about delivering prey to a CP (Fig. 4).  相似文献

In order to delineate the features of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) metabolism in various organs of piglets, in vitro metabolism of AFB1 by microsomes and cytosol of the various piglet organs was studied. The AFB1 was converted efficiently to AFP1 by the kidney microsomes. A less efficient metabolism was noted from the AFB1 to AFQ1, AFM1, and aflatoxicol (AFL) in the various organs. The microsomal ability to form AFB1-DNA adduct was higher in liver when compared to the other organs. The cytosolic glutathione-S-transferase activity to convert AFB1-epoxide to AFB1-glutathione conjugate product was relatively higher in the liver and the small intestine. The reductase activity to convert AFB1-dialdehyde to AFB1-dialcohol was similar in all the organs. The results suggest that the variation in susceptibility to the aflatoxin among different organs is attributable mainly to the organ differences in cytochrome P450 activity to form AFB1-epoxide.  相似文献

Wet and dry weight, total carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and ash contents were determined on 33 species of zooplankton distributed predominantly in the open sea region of the North Pacific. Sampling covered the waters from 44°N to the equator. Average percentage of dry weight to wet weight was about 19% of all samples from the whole area. Percentage dry weight of carbon in copepods was on an average 51.5%. The highest value, 66.6%, was obtained in eggs of the copepod Pareuchaeta sarsi. Mixed zooplankton was assumed to contain carbon comprising about 35 to 45% of the dry weight. Carbon contained in the zooplankton biomass existing in the upper 200 m in the western parts of the northern North Pacific and Bering Sea during spring and summer was estimated to range from 20 to 85 mg C/m3. Nitrogen content varied considerably with localities. Average ratio of carbon to nitrogen was 8.5 in subarctic copepods, and 4.1 in subtropic-tropic copepods. This ratio also varied with season. In the copepod Calanus cristatus the ratio was highest (10.0) in May, immediately after the spring bloom of phytoplankton, when the animals contained much fat. The ratio fell to 5.1 in December. There seemed to be a large seasonal variation in boreal zooplankton due to great fluctuations of environmental conditions, especially the amount of food available; in tropical species the range was small because of environmental uniformity. Average hydrogen content was about 6 to 10%. The percentage of ash to dry weight amounted to 39.3% in pteropods and 3.4% in copepods.  相似文献

Planning in sustainable development is believed to be an important element in allowing higher education institutions to set their goals and to commit themselves towards undertaking concrete actions and measures at all levels in order to implement sustainability. Yet, there is a paucity of research that has looked at the extent to which planning can support institutions of higher education to assess their performances and to determine whether the set aims have been met. This research gap needs to be met to allow a better understanding of how planning can help to promote the integration of the three components of sustainable development – economic development, social development and environmental protection in higher education. This paper explores the challenges for planning the sustainable development in higher education, also outlining the potentials lessons learned that could assist in improving Education for Sustainable Development efforts in Higher Education Institutions. Among its main results are the fact that many universities wish to pursue sustainable development, but their efforts are hindered by lack of institutional support and planning and limited emphasis on approaches, such as problem-based learning. The universities that are engaged in the field have to face many problems, varying from limited resources to lack of trained staff. As a result, integrated approaches to sustainability become difficult to implement. Finally, the paper has identified the fact that many opportunities offered mainstream developments, such as the UN Declaration ‘The World we Want’ or the UN Sustainable Development Goals are not being put to full use.  相似文献

Coastal lagoons have long been subjected to anthropogenic disturbances due to the increasingly urbanization pressure along the margins. As a result, the composition, structure and distribution of macrozoobenthic communities are strongly affected by environmental gradients and harsh ecological conditions. This study address the first signs changes in the Piratininga-Itaipu lagoon system, located in the southeastern Brazilian coastline, state of Rio de Janeiro, after the opening of a tidal channel in the most deteriorated area of Piratininga lagoon in April 2008, as part of restoration measures concerning the severe eutrophication of this system. In order to observe changes in environmental conditions and community structure before and after the channel opening, sampling of the benthic macrofauna and abiotic variables were conducted in seven sites, from August 2007 to March 2009. According to statistical tools, no significant differences were shown in both environmental characteristics and community structure before and after the channel at the distinct locations. Nevertheless, local changes in the abundance and composition of species were detected particularly in Piratininga, in the site where the tidal channel was constructed. A remarkable loss in abundance of most opportunistic species and the appearance of six new taxa in Piratininga after the opening of the channel was related to habitat regeneration in virtue of the intrusion of marine waters into the lagoon. However, marine inflow seems to be restricted since no clear evidence of the channel influence was felt in the remaining sites of Piratininga and in Itaipu. Macrobenthic communities were heterogeneous between both lagoons throughout the sampling period, characterized by low diversity and evenness indices. A general increase in salinity and redox potential were observed in Piratininga. Both variables allied to dissolved oxygen appeared to play a major role in structuring the benthic communities. This study is the first contribution to knowledge of taxonomic biodiversity of macrozoobenthic assemblages of Piratininga-Itaipu lagoon system and pioneer in describing apparent ecosystem ameliorations after the channel opening. Therefore, continuous monitoring ought to be carried out in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the tidal channel and follow further recovery of this ecosystem. Macrobenthos were quite heterogeneous between both lagoons throughout the sampling period, with biological attributes showing a remarkable loss in species abundance, mostly opportunistic. The appearance of new taxa, Polydora cornuta, after the opening of the channel was related to improvement of better oxygenation of water and sediments, causing regeneration of habitat. Other resilient taxa with persistant bioturbation activities, such as Allita, Streblospio, Capitella and oligochaetes, dominated the early stages of recovery. This study is the first contribution to knowledge of taxonomic biodiversity of macrozoobenthic assemblages of Piratining-Itaipu lagoon system and pioneer in describing apparent ecosystem ameliorations after the channel opening. Host plant resistance (HPR) to insects is an effective, economical, and environment friendly method of pest control. The most attractive feature of HPR is that farmers virtually do not need any skill in application techniques, and there is no cash investment by the resource poor farmers. Considerable progress has been made in identification and development of crop cultivars with resistance to the major pests in different crops. There is a need to transfer resistance genes into high-yielding cultivars with adaptation to different agro-ecosystems. Resistance to insects should form one of the criteria to release varieties and hybrids for cultivation by the farmers. Genes from the wild relatives of crops, and novel genes, such as those from Bacillus thuringiensis can also be deployed in different crops to make HPR an effective weapon to minimize the losses due to insect pests. HPR will not only cause a major reduction in pesticide use and slowdown the rate of development of resistance to insecticides in insect populations, but also lead to increased activity of beneficial organisms and reduction in pesticide residues in food and food products.  相似文献

为研究含雄黄中成药中砷的含量状况,探明其中砷对人体的健康风险,选取含雄黄的中成药为研究对象,分析其中砷含量;通过人工胃肠体外模拟系统研究中成药中砷的生物可给性,并在此基础上进行初步的人体健康风险评价。结果显示,含雄黄中成药样品中砷全量为9.9×102~8.8×104mg·kg-1。中成药砷的生物可给性在胃阶段为0.20%~2.17%,小肠阶段为0.26%~2.43%。以WHO每日允许摄入量(ADI)为标准的健康风险评价结果表明,若以砷全量衡量,所有含雄黄中成药均对人体健康具有巨大风险;若以小肠阶段可给砷含量评价,砷日摄入量与ADI比值范围为1.48%~879.68%,约70%含雄黄的中成药的可给砷含量仍足以威胁人体健康。  相似文献

In Patagonia, Argentina, watching dolphins, especially dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus), is a new tourist activity. Feeding time decreases and time to return to feeding after feeding is abandoned and time it takes a group of dolphins to feed increase in the presence of boats. Such effects on feeding behavior may exert energetic costs on dolphins and thus reduce an individual's survival and reproductive capacity or maybe associated with shifts in distribution. We sought to predict which behavioral changes modify the activity pattern of dolphins the most. We modeled behavioral sequences of dusky dolphins with Markov chains. We calculated transition probabilities from one activity to another and arranged them in a stochastic matrix model. The proportion of time dolphins dedicated to a given activity (activity budget) and the time it took a dolphin to resume that activity after it had been abandoned (recurrence time) were calculated. We used a sensitivity analysis of Markov chains to calculate the sensitivity of the time budget and the activity-resumption time to changes in behavioral transition probabilities. Feeding-time budget was most sensitive to changes in the probability of dolphins switching from traveling to feeding behavior and of maintaining feeding behavior. Thus, an increase in these probabilities would be associated with the largest reduction in the time dedicated to feeding. A reduction in the probability of changing from traveling to feeding would also be associated with the largest increases in the time it takes dolphins to resume feeding. To approach dolphins when they are traveling would not affect behavior less because presence of the boat may keep dolphins from returning to feeding. Our results may help operators of dolphin-watching vessels minimize negative effects on dolphins.  相似文献

燃煤烟气脱硫副产物作为废弃物对环境的潜在威胁,促使人们对其资源化利用研究的重视。文章针对红壤地区土壤普遍缺乏营养元素的问题,通过分析盆栽和田间试验结果,探讨燃煤烟气脱硫副产物在酸性土壤上的农用价值与利用原理。结果表明,燃煤烟气脱硫副产物富含作物所需的营养元素,而红壤地区土壤又普遍缺乏这些元素;它具有独特的形态特征和理化性能,在酸性土壤中可以产生协同效应,因而具极高的农用价值。在酸性土壤上适量施用,可以提高土壤养分含量,改善土壤理化性质,提高土壤供肥性能和持水能力,促进作物对养分的吸收,从而达到废弃物农业资源化利用的目的。  相似文献

With the computer program VORTEX I ran a series of simulations of the Bearded Vulture ( Gypaetus barbatus ) population held in captivity in European zoos and of the population released in the Alps. The simulations showed that the risk of extinction of the captive population with the extraction rates currently in use is low. It seems possible to maintain the current release rate of two fledglings per year at each of the four release sites in the Alps, but it does not seem possible to increase the release rate by expanding the project to other European mountains without dangerously depleting the captive population. The models showed that the most effective way to increase the release rate without increasing the captive population size is by improving hatching success in captivity. The information on the demographic parameters of the Bearded Vulture population released in the Alps was not good enough to predict the ultimate fate of the present population or to allow for recommendations on how long the population should continue to be supplemented. Although it will be necessary to wait some years to see if Bearded Vultures are able to breed in the wild in the Alps and to estimate fecundity rates, it should be possible to improve the monitoring of the individuals released to obtain more-precise survival estimates. The models of the captive and released population also showed that it should at least be possible to have an artificially supplemented Bearded Vulture population in the Alps, but because this is not the goal of the present reintroduction project, the organizations involved should decide whether this is a politically or economically desirable goal.  相似文献

The present study was performed to investigate the toxic impact of carbaryl on biochemical metabolism in the hemolymph, brain, hepatopancreas, gills and muscle of intermoult juveniles of the economically important prawn, Macrobrachium malcolmsonii. The concentration of glutathione S-transferase (GST) was found to be higher in test prawns when compared with controls. This suggests that a mechanism of detoxification was in operation to neutralise carbaryl toxicity. However, the toxic effect of carbaryl was not fully neutralised, and hence, alterations were recorded in basic biochemical metabolism of test prawns. The concentration of acetylcholinestrase (AchE) was found to be lower in test prawns than that of controls. Carbaryl toxicity resulted in utilisation of major biochemical constituents, such as total carbohydrate, glycogen, protein and lipid to generate required energy as an attempt to withstand the toxic stress. Glycogenolysis resulted in elevation of total free sugar level in the hemolymph of test prawns. While proteolysis led to elevation of total free amino acid level in test prawns. The content of total lipid have also been found lower in test prawns than that of controls. This suggests that carbaryl toxicity resulted in severe energy crises in test prawns. In the present study, toxic effects of carbaryl impair basic metabolic functions and hence pose a threat to the life of M. malcolmsonii.  相似文献
