This study aimed to evaluate the leaching of pesticides and the applicability of the Attenuation Factor (AF) Model to predict their leaching. The leaching of carbofuran, carbendazim, diuron, metolachlor, α and β endosulfan and chlorpyrifos was studied in an Oxisol using a field experiment lysimeter located in Dom Aquino – Mato Grosso. The samples of percolated water were collected by rain event and analyzed. Chemical and physical soil attributes were determined before pesticide application to the plots. The results showed that carbofuran was the pesticide that presented a higher leaching rate in the studied soil, so was the one representing the highest contamination potential. From the total carbofuran applied in the soil surface, around 6 % leached below 50 cm. The other pesticides showed lower mobility in the studied soil. The calculated values to AF were 7.06E-12 (carbendazim), 5.08E-03 (carbofuran), 3.12E-17 (diuron), 6.66E-345 (α-endosulfan), 1.47E-162 (β-endosulfan), 1.50E-06 (metolachlor), 3.51E-155 (chlorpyrifos). AF Model was useful to classify the pesticides' potential for contamination; however, that model underestimated pesticide leaching.  相似文献

The aim of the Bavarian Monitoring of Breast Milk (BAMBI) project was to examine 10 organochlorine pesticides (OPs), 3 nitro musks, 6 indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 7 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), 10 polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), 12 dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs) and several perfluorinated alkyl compounds in breast milk samples. A total of 516 breast milk samples were collected from seven regions in Bavaria and were analyzed by means of GC/ECD, GC/HRMS, and LC/MS-MS.  相似文献

Detailed analyses of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloro ethane (DDT) and its metabolites (DDTs) and congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil and surface water from the northeastern São Paulo, Brazil allowed the evaluation of the contamination status, distribution and possible pollution sources. The pesticides and PCBs demonstrated markedly different distributions, reflecting different agricultural, domestic and industrial usage in each region studied. The ranges of HCH, DDT, and PCBs concentrations in the soil samples were 0.05–0.92, 0.12–11.01, 0.02–0.25 ng g−1 dry wt, respectively, and in the surface water samples were 0.02–0.6, 0.02–0.58 and 0.02–0.5 ng l−1, respectively. Overall elevated levels of DDT and PCB were recorded in region 2, a site very close to melting, automotive batteries industries, and agricultural practice regions. High ratios of metabolites of DDT to DDT isomers revealed the recent use of DDT in this environment. The sources of contamination are closely related to human activities, such as domestic and industrial discharge, street runoff, agricultural pesticides and soil erosion, due to deforestation as well as atmospheric transport.  相似文献

Results are described of a forest clearing experiment conducted in Tomé Acu, located approximately 250 km south of Belém, the capital of the Brazilian northern state of Pará. An area of 3 ha of virgin forest was cut in July 1994 and left to dry until October of the same year, when fire was set. Post burning was also performed 30 days after the main fire. The test location biomass content per hectare was measured by indirect methods using formulas with parameters of forest inventories. The carbon content of the several biomass compartments was determined in a CHN analyzer. The combustion completeness was estimated by selecting ten 2+2 m2 areas and 24 large trunks and examining their consumption rates by fire. The 2+2 m2 areas were used to determine the completeness of small parts of biomass (those whose characteristic diameters were lower than 10 cm) and the trunks to determine the efficiency of the larger parts (characteristic diameters larger than 10 cm). The overall process combustion completeness was estimated to be 20.1%. Considering that the combustion gases of carbon in open fires contain approximately 90% of CO2 and 10% of CO in volumetric basis, the emission rates of these gases by the burning process were estimated as 70.2 and 5.0 t ha-1, respectively.  相似文献

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) residue levels were determined in 53 unhatched eggs from greater roseus flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber). Eggs were collected in 1996 from the National Park of Doñana (Guadalquivir marshes, Southwest Spain), immediately after one breeding colony abandoned the nesting site due to predator attacks. The main metabolite of p,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDE, was the OCP residue found at higher concentrations, with a geometric mean of 721 ng/g wet weight. Residues of other pesticides, including some hexachlorocyclohexane isomers, hexachlorobenzene, aldrin, heptachlor, and heptachlor-epoxide, were detected at much lower concentrations. The sum of PCBs was 528 ng/g, with PCB congeners #187 and #153 being the most prominent in eggs. The pattern observed in these compounds of industrial origin corresponded more to Aroclor 1260 than to any other commercial mixture. Levels of organochlorine residues indicate a medium degree of exposure, and they are not considered of any concern for the flamingo population. In particular, neither p,p′-DDE nor PCB levels were found to be correlated with the eggshell thickness.  相似文献

The Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP), Brazil, is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world (population 17 million, approx.) and relies heavily on alcohol-based fuels for automobiles. It is estimated that about 40% of the total volume of fuel is ethanol with some vehicles using pure ethanol and others a gasoline/ethanol blend. As such, São Paulo is an excellent example of an oxygenates-dominated airshed of mobile sources and is most likely indicative of the future in heavily populated areas in the US such as Los Angeles where “oxy-fuels” are becoming an important replacement for the conventional pure petroleum-based fuels. In this work, we surveyed the ambient air to identify and quantify the organic compounds associated with the evaporative and exhaust emissions of these fuels and to begin to understand the potential for human exposure. Because this was an initial test without detailed prior knowledge of the airshed of the area, we applied two different air sampling methods for various time periods to assess the ambient concentrations of a variety of polar and nonpolar volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For quality assurance (QA), we collected all the samples in duplicate (whole-air samples in Summa canisters and adsorbent-based samples on Perkin-Elmer Air Toxics tubes) at various flow rates to test performance. All samples were collected over identical time frames, typically for 1-, 2-, and 4-h periods per day at six different locations over a period of 1 week. Overall São Paulo results demonstrate that mean concentrations of single-ring aromatics are 2–3 times higher, volatile aldehydes are 5–10 times higher, and simple alcohols 10–100 times higher as compared to results of a recent study performed by EPA in the Los Angeles basin. C4–C11 n-alkanes were only slightly elevated in São Paulo.  相似文献

The fuel matrix used in Brazil is unique around the world. The intensive use of hydrated ethanol, gasohol (gasoline with 25% v/v of ethanol), compressed natural gas (CNG), and biodiesel leads to a peculiar composition of the urban atmosphere. From 1998 to 2002 an increase in formaldehyde levels was observed and since then, a reduction. This work presents a monitoring campaign that was executed from March 2004 to February 2009 by sampling at early morning on every sunny Wednesday for a total of 183 samples. The results indicate a strong reduction in formaldehyde levels from 2004 (average of 135.8 μg m?3 with SD 28.4 μg m?3) to 2009 (average of 49.3 μg m?3 with SD 27.4 μg m?3). The levels of acetaldehyde showed a slight reduction from 2004 (average of 34.9 μg m?3 with SD 8.0 μg m?3) to 2009 (average of 26.8 μg m?3 with SD 11.5 μg m?3). Comparing the results with the concurrent evolution of the fleet and of fuel composition indicates that the observed formaldehyde levels could be associated with the increase in ethanol use and in CNG use by engines with improved technology over the first converted CNG engines. Modelling studies using the OZIPR trajectory model and the SAPRC chemical mechanism indicate that formaldehyde is the main ozone precursor in Rio de Janeiro and acetaldehyde is the forth one.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the trace elements, Pb, Cd, and Cr in honey samples from eight different regions from the state of Paraná (Brazil), using slurry sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Chemometric analysis (principal component analysis (PCA)) was applied to classify honey samples according to their levels of the trace elements Pb, Cd, and Cr, which is also related to the geographical origin of honey samples. The mean concentration for the elements followed the order Pb?>?Cr >?>?Cd. The mean values were 200?±?76, 88?±?14, and 4.1?±?4 ng g?1 for Pb, Cr, and Cd, respectively. It could be verified that honey samples are geographically separated, especially with regard to Pb and Cd contents. Thus, honey can be considered a bioindicator of environmental contamination, suggesting possible contamination in soil, water, and air. This contamination can be related to natural or anthropogenic sources present in the study regions.  相似文献

The large-scale air pollution episode due to the out-of-control biomass burning for agricultural purposes in Indonesia started in June 1997, has become a severe environmental problem for itself and the neighboring countries. The fire lasted for almost five months. Its impact on the health and ecology in the affected areas is expected to be substantial, costly and possibly long lasting. Air pollution Index as high as 839 has been reported in Malaysia. API is calculated based on the five pollutants: NO2, SO2, O3, CO, and respirable suspended particulates (PM10). It ranges in value from 0 to 500. An index above 101 is considered to be unhealthy and a value over 201 is very unhealthy (Abidin and Shin, 1996).The solvent-extractable organic compounds from four total suspended particulate (TSP) high-volume samples collected in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Stations Pudu and SIRIM) were subjected to characterization – the abundance was determined and biomarkers were identified. Two of the samples were from early September when the fire was less intense, while the other two were from late September when Kuala Lumpur experienced very heavy smoke coverage which could be easily observed from NOAA/AVHRR satellite images. The samples contained mainly aliphatic hydrocarbons such as n-alkanes and triterpanes, alkanoic acids, alkanols, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The difference between the early and late September samples was very significant. The total yield increased from 0.6 to 24.3 μg m-3 at Pudu and 1.9 to 20.1 μg m-3 at SIRIM, with increases in concentration in every class. The higher input of vascular plant wax components in the late September samples, when the fire was more intense, was characterized by the distribution patterns of the homologous series n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, and n-alkanols, e.g., lower U : R, higher >C22/<C20 for n-alkanoic acids, higher >C20/<C20 for n-alkanols, a shift in Cmax from C16 to C26 for n-alkanoic acids and C18 to C28 for n-alkanols, and the presence of abundant moretane (17β(H), 21α(H)-hopanes). The biomarkers dehydroabietic acid and retene were not found in the samples suggesting there is a difference in the long-distance transport samples of an Asian forest fire and the controlled experiments reported in the literature. Similar to the biomass burning in Amazonia (Abas et al., 1995), the present study also showed an absence of conifer tracers in the smoke aerosols indicating tropical wood sources. Abundant friedelin, a specific biomarker for smoke from oak wood fires (Standley and Simoneit, 1990), was present in the late September samples when the fire was more intense. The results were compared to literature values from an earlier study of the haze episode on 29 September 1991 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Abas and Simoneit, 1996).  相似文献

Carbonyl compounds are very important for the trophospheric physico-chemistry because they are the result of the first photo-oxidation stage of almost all organic compounds and they are the essential originators of the free radicals. In the present review we make a synthesis of the studies on the carbonyl compounds chemistry in the trophosphere by successively examining: measurement methods in the trophosphere, sources of primary carbonyl compounds, formation of secondary carbonyl compounds in the atmosphere, reactivity of carbonyl compounds in the atmosphere.  相似文献

Milk from Indonesian women (n = 4) was analysed for p,p’-DDT and the fungicide, hexachlorobenzene (HCB). p,p’-DDT was found in all of the samples and at levels that are amongst the highest reported anywhere in the world in 3 of the samples. HCB was found in all 4 samples, 1 sample had an exceptionally high level. The high residue of HCB suggested exposure by eating dressed grain, major environmental contamination or direct exposure when handling the fungicide. These are the first data on pesticide residues in milk from Indonesian women which demonstrate general exposure to p,p’-DDT and HCB.  相似文献

As a result of air pollutant emissions from the industrial complex of Cubat?o, Brazil, the Atlantic Forest vegetation of the Serra do Mar shows severe and widespread damage. In order to obtain information on the type, intensity and causes of the vegetation damage, bioindicator plants were exposed at different distances from the emission sources. Air-pollution-induced effects were evaluated by estimation of visible injury symptoms and chemical analyses of leaves. The results prove the occurrence of phytotoxic levels of photochemical oxidants in wide parts of the research area. Intense fluoride-induced damage and high leaf fluoride concentrations were found in a valley downwind of fertiliser industries. The study showed that some of the traditional standardised bioindication methods from temperate climates may be successfully employed in biomonitoring programmes in tropical and subtropical regions.  相似文献

Concentrations of technical 4-nonylphenol, 4-n-octylphenol, and 4-tert-octylphenol were investigated in surface water and sediment samples of four reservoirs southwest of S?o Paulo. Three of them (Takimoto 1, Takimoto 2, Pedro) were established in intensively cropped landscapes, one (Morro Grande) was surrounded by dense forests. Total alkylphenol concentrations in sediments generally ranged between 1 and 10 microgkg-1dw with 4-tert-octylphenol being the dominant alkylphenol. Because 4-tert-octylphenol concentration patterns at Takimoto 2, Pedro, and in the Morro Grande forest reservoir were found to be quite similar (upto 5 microgkg-1dw), this value is considered as the ubiquitous background level. In contrast, the Takimoto 1 sediments showed significantly higher 4-tert-octylphenol concentrations, possibly due to accelerated inputs from adjacent intensively cropped fields. Analysed alkylphenols were not detectable in water samples.  相似文献

Total mercury concentrations were measured in dorsal muscle tissue of two edible fish species, Prochilodus scrofa 'curimba' and Pseudoplatystoma corruscans 'pintado', respectively detritivorous and carnivorous. Fish species were sampled monthly between February 1993 and January 1994 and bimonthly between April 1994 and February 1995 in three subsystems of Paraná river' system (Ivinhema River/Lake Patos; Baía River/Lake Guaraná and Paraná River/Cortado Channel), between Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. Total mercury was determined by HNO3/H2SO4/V2O5 digestion, SnCl2 reduction, and vapour generation method analysis (CGCH 900), adapted to Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (CGAA 7000 ABC). The mean mercury concentrations varied from 82.0 to 310.5 ng g(-1) and from 68 to 294.4 ng g(-1) in 'curimbas' and 'pintados', respectively. Mercury level increases in sexually mature 'curimbas'. Mercury values detected do not exceed the prevailing criteria for issuance of fish consumption advisories (< 500 ng g(-1)).  相似文献

Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers (α-, β- and γ- HCH [lindane]) were recently added to the list of persistent organic pollutants regulated by the Stockholm Convention, and therefore, the legacy of HCH and lindane production has become an issue of global relevance. The production of lindane with the much larger quantities of associated waste isomers has generated large waste deposits and contaminated sites. This article presents an overview of HCH-polluted sites in Brazil as a basis for further activities related to the Stockholm Convention. The locations of HCH stockpiles and contaminated sites in Brazil arising from production and formulation have been compiled and mapped. This shows that the measures taken over the past 25 years have not resulted in remediation of the HCH pollution. An exposure risk study has been summarised for one major site and is included to demonstrate the contemporary relevance of the contamination. Major site remediation efforts are planned at one site but people live close to several other sites, and there is an urgent need of further assessments and remediation to ensure the protection of human health and the environment. The Stockholm Convention requires a systematic approach and should be adopted for the assessment of all sites and appropriate isolation/remediation measures should be facilitated. The appropriate planning of these activities for the production site in Rio de Janeiro could be a positive contribution for Rio+20 highlighting that green economy and sustainable production also include the appropriate management of legacies of historic production of an industrial sector (here the organochlorine industry).  相似文献
