The field measurement phase of the San Joaquin Valley Air Quality Study, which was conducted in the summer of 1990, was the largest and most sophisticated study of its kind ever conducted in this country. The San Joaquin Valley has the nation’s second worst overall air quality problem and is using the study results to conduct regional modeling to refine its control strategies. The study began in 1985 and will continue into the mid-1990s. The origins of the study, and the manner in which it is being funded and administered, reflect a unique and highly successful collaboration among several levels of government and the private sector. The temporary organizational structure formed to manage the study sets an interesting precedent for how political-level leaders can work effectively with the scientific community to conduct a long term technical study.  相似文献

The bioavailability of pollutants, pesticides and/or their degradation products in soil depends on the strength of their sorption by the different soil components, particularly by the clay minerals. This study reports the sorption-desorption behavior of the environmentally hazardous industrial pollutants and certain pesticides degradation products, 3-chloroaniline, 3,4-dichloroaniline, 2,4,6-trichloroaniline, 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol on the reference clays kaolinite KGa-1 and Na-montmorillonite SWy-l. In batch studies, 2.0 g of clay were equilibrated with 100.0 mL solutions of each chemical at concentrations ranging from 10.0 to 200.0 mg/L. The uptake of the compounds was deduced from the results of HPLC-UV-Vis analysis. The lipophilic species were best retained by both clay materials. The most lipophilic chemical used in the study, 2,4,6-trichloroaniline, was also the most strongly retained, with sorption of up to 8 mg/g. In desorption experiments, which also relied on HPLC-UV-Vis technique, 2,4,6-trichloroaniline was the least desorbed from montmorillonite. However, on kaolinite all of the compounds under study were irreversibly retained. The experimental data have been modelled according to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. A hypothesis is proposed concerning the sorption mechanism and potential applications of the findings in remediation strategies have been suggested.  相似文献

Pentachlorotoluene (PCT) and pentabromotoluene (PBT) are environmental contaminants detected in the Great Lakes ecosystem. In view of the paucity of toxicity data and the potential for human exposure, a subacute (28 day) and a subchronic (91 day) study were conducted in the rat. In the subacute study, groups of 10 male and 10 female rats were fed the diet containing PCT or PBT at 0, 0.5, 5.0, 50 or 500 ppm for 28-days. In the subchronic study, the group size was increased to 15, the dose levels were 0, 0.05, 0.5, 5.0, 50 and 500 ppm in the diet and the exposure period was 91 days. Growth rate and food consumption were not affected by exposure to either chemical in the subacute and subchronic study. Clinical observations revealed no abnormalities. Decreased hemoglobin was observed in female rats fed 5.0 ppm PCT and higher levels in the subacute (28 day) study. In the same study the hematocrit value and erythrocyte numbers of females fed 5.0 or 500 ppm PCT diets were significantly lower than the control. In both subacute and subchronic studies mild dose-dependent histopathological changes were observed in the thyroid, liver and kidney of rats fed PCT and PBT diets. In general male rats were more susceptible than females to the treatment of PCT and PBT. Based on these data, it was concluded that the no observable adverse effect level for PCT was 50 ppm in the diet (3.5 mg/kg b.w./day) and that of PBT was 5.0 ppm (0.35 mg/kg b.w./day).  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate performance and cost comparisons of fabric filters and alternate fine particulate control techniques. In relating the removal of fine particulate to costs, due to the lack of fractional efficiency data, it was found necessary to treat a specific application in order to make the study manageable. Studies conducted at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency facility in Research Triangle Park, NC, and at a field study in Southern California have demonstrated the capability for the semicontinuous determination of particulate nitrate (and other water-soluble ionic species). Two instruments, an R&P Series 8400N Ambient Particulate Nitrate Monitor (8400N) and an ion chromatography (IC)-based prototype monitor developed at Texas Tech University, were evaluated both in the laboratory using aqueous standards and simulated ambient aerosols and in the field during a 3-week July 1-21, 2003) joint ambient comparison study with Brigham Young University and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). The field study was conducted at the SCAQMD Rubidoux field site near Riverside, CA. During initial (before the field study) laboratory studies, both instruments were responsive to changes in the simulated aerosol concentration. However, potential problems were discovered involving both instruments during the laboratory-based studies both before and after the Rubidoux study, and these problems are currently being addressed. During the 3-week field study period, 15-minute average particulate nitrate concentrations approaching 30 microg/m3 were observed. Because of malfunctioning IC components (concentrator columns) of the Texas Tech University prototype monitor, limited data were obtained from this instrument during the 3-week sampling period. Initial ambient comparisons show general agreement between the 8400N and IC-based prototype instrument for the semicontinuous determination of ambient particulate nitrate at lower nitrate concentrations (<15 microg/m3) and an underdetermination by the 8400N at higher concentrations (>15 microg/m3). A decreased molybdenum converter efficiency in the pulse analyzer of the 8400N discovered during postfield study laboratory evaluation may explain the negative bias observed at higher nitrate concentrations. Semicontinuous results obtained from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-operated instruments were averaged and compared with integrated sampler results obtained by Brigham Young University and SCAQMD.  相似文献

This study presents results of the first statistically designed study to determine reasons for reported Toxic Release I nventory (TRI) releases and transfers changing from year to year. Data for the study were collected through telephone interviews with a stratified random sample of 1,206 facilities. Each facility was asked to explain the extent to which three factors — source reduction, production fluctuation, and measurement change — contributed to reported changes in TRI releases and transfers between 1989 and 1990. Participants’ responses were weighted and estimates of the reasons for change were calculated for industry and national levels. The results show that source reduction had the greatest impact on net quantity change — at least 45 percent of the total net reductions. However, all three variables contributed to both increases and decreases in releases and transfers. Therefore, comparing the aggregated results of each variable can be difficult since the true effect of each variable may be masked by quantity increases and decreases which have canceled each other out.  相似文献

The United States Department of Health and Human Services through Wayne State University (WSU) has completed a study of hazardous waste education and training in the United States. The study documents university course work and degrees as well as non-degree continuing education short courses. Major portions of the study are based on a WSU sponsored survey in which 1469 four-year degree granting institutions were contacted. Of the 732 institutions responding, 113 were identified as offering course work of some kind in hazardous waste. Information on 499 distinct non-degree short courses was also gathered and evaluated. The purpose, methodology and results of the study are summarized in this article.  相似文献

The expansion of urbanization introduces air pollution to wildlife areas. Some metal contaminants occurring in concentrations too small to have any measurable impact on adult birds may seriously affect embryos that are more sensitive to contaminants than the adult. Chromium, manganese, and lead are toxic and can be passed from the hen to the egg. This study relates the concentrations of these metals in eggs to their concentrations in air in three cities. Rock dove eggs were sampled and air pollution records were examined in the California cities of Riverside, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The eggs from San Francisco did not differ from those of Los Angeles in lead concentration but the air did differ. The eggs collected in Los Angeles in 1998 had concentrations of chromium greater than in those from Riverside and from Los Angeles 1999 but the air had concentrations of chromium that did not differ among those three collections. Concentrations of manganese did not differ among the eggs but did differ among the air samples of the three cities. Exposures of embryos to chromium and manganese in this study were not at levels warranting concern. Although the concentration at which lead in eggs impairs avian health is not established, the highest concentrations found in this study exceed estimated safe concentrations. There is no indication that embryo exposure is directly related to atmospheric levels of these metals in the cities of this study.  相似文献

In recent years, some perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have been identified as potentially hazardous substances which are harmful to the environment and human health. According to limited data, PFC levels in humans could be influenced by several determinants. However, the findings are inconsistent. In the present study, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) were measured in paired maternal and cord serum samples (N?=?237) collected between 1978 and 2001 in Southern Sweden to study the relationship between these and to investigate several potential determinants of maternal and fetal exposure to PFCs. Time trends of PFCs in Swedish women were also evaluated. The study is a part of the Fetal Environment and Neurodevelopment Disorders in Epidemiological Research project. PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA levels (median) were higher in maternal serum (15, 2.1, and 0.24 ng/ml, respectively) than in cord serum (6.5, 1.7, and 0.20 ng/ml, respectively). PFC levels were among the highest in women originating from the Nordic countries and the lowest in women from the Middle East, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa. Multiparous women had lower serum PFOA levels (1.7 ng/ml) than primiparous women (2.4 ng/ml). Maternal age, body mass index, cotinine levels, and whether women carried male or female fetuses did not affect serum PFC concentrations. Umbilical cord serum PFC concentrations showed roughly similar patterns as the maternal except for the gestational age where PFC levels increased with advancing gestational age. PFOS levels increased during the study period in native Swedish women. In summary, PFOS levels tend to increase while PFOA and PFNA levels were unchanged between 1978 and 2001 in our study population. Our results demonstrate that maternal country of origin, parity, and gestational age might be associated with PFC exposure.  相似文献

Trichlorfon was evaluated for its teratogenic potential in the CD-1 mouse at doses of 200, 300 or 400 mg/kg/day administered by gavage on days 7-16 of gestation. In the CD-1 mouse, TCF was teratogenic, fetotoxic and lethal at the two highest dose levels which were also maternally lethal. At the lowest dose level which was not maternally lethal, there was a significant decrease in the number of calcified centers in the forepaws and hindpaws indicating fetotoxicity and a delay in maturation. TCF was administered at doses of 50, 100 or 200 mg/kg/day to CD rats by gavage on gestational days 7-19 (study I) or 8-20 (study II). In the CD rat in body study I and II, the highest dose level was maternally lethal. In study I, TCF was teratogenic with a shift in rib profile. In study II, TCF was teratogenic with an increased incidence in malformations of the urinary system. Additionally, TCF was fetotoxic with reduced ossification of the skulls at the lowest and highest dose levels.  相似文献

Field observations indicating that uniform gas flow at the precipitator outlet may not result in best performance led to a study of how reentrainment and changes in gas distribution within a precipitator affect performance. A computer model developed in the study predicts that an improvement over uniform flow performance is possible by using controlled nonuniform gas distributions at both the inlet and the outlet faces of the precipitator. The model was used to study how changes in precipitator side view geometry affect performance and offers explanations for the reduction in precipitation constants experienced with larger installations.  相似文献

This paper reviews the recent scientific literature on PCDDs, PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs in human milk. All the papers reporting levels of these contaminants in human breast milk published from January 2000 to January 2009 and available on the www.sciencedirect.com web site were identified and included. The aim was (1) to study levels of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs in human milk in mothers from different geographical areas and assess infant exposure to these contaminants; (2) to study the effect of variables such as the mother’s age, number of deliveries, dietary and smoking habits and her own nutrition in infancy, and the environment, on levels of the contaminants in breast milk; (3) to study time patterns, and (4) to identify data gaps.  相似文献

This study, framed within geographical epidemiology, presents preliminary findings concerning the association between the concentrations of chemical elements obtained through atmospheric biomonitoring with lichens and cancer mortality in the Portuguese population. Exploratory analyses were performed to identify potential confounders for the relationships between chemical elements and neoplasm mortality and to assess the extent of their interference. The results of this study highlight some methodological and conceptual difficulties inherent to observational and geographical studies, in the specific context of the Portuguese population, and the challenge posed by the large numbers of pollutants considered.  相似文献

An in vivo pilot study of the oral bioavailability of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in two soils with distinct congener profiles (one dominated by PCDDs, the other by PCDFs) was conducted in rats and juvenile swine. The pilot study revealed potential confounding of relative bioavailability estimates compared to bioavailability in spiked corn oil gavage for tetrachlorodibenzofuran (TCDF) in the rat study due to differential EROD induction between groups receiving soil and those receiving spiked control PCDDs/PCDFs. A follow-up study in rats with the furan-contaminated soil was then conducted with reductions in the spiked control doses to 20%, 50% and 80% of the soil-feed dose in order to bracket hepatic enzyme induction levels in the soil group. When hepatic enzyme induction was matched between the soil and spiked control groups, the apparent relative bioavailability for TCDF was reduced significantly. Overall, after controlling for hepatic enzyme induction, estimates of relative bioavailability in rats and swine differed for the two soils. In the rat study, the relative bioavailability of the two soils were approximately 37% and 60% compared to corn oil administration for the PCDD- and PCDF- dominated soils, respectively, on a TEQ basis. In swine, both soils demonstrated relative bioavailability between 20% and 25% compared to administration in corn oil. These species differences and experimental design issues, such as controlling for differential enzyme induction between corn oil and soil-feed animals in a bioavailability study, are relevant to risk assessment efforts where relative bioavailability inputs are important for theoretical exposure and risk characterization.  相似文献

In toxicokinetics studies, interactions between chemicals in mixtures has been largely neglected. This study examines a mixture of perchlorate and arsenate because (1) they have the potential to co-occur in contaminated aquatic habitats, and (2) a previous study by the authors found possible toxicological interactive effects. In the present study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to two concentrations of sodium perchlorate (10 and 100 mg l(-1)), sodium arsenate (1 and 10 mg l(-1)), and the mixture-sodium perchlorate+sodium arsenate (10+1 mg l(-1) and 100+10 mg l(-1) Na(2)HAsO(4)-high mixture) for 90 d. Their uptake and accumulation by zebrafish was evaluated at 10, 30, 60, and 90 d. In addition, depuration was examined at 1, 3, and 5d after cessation of the exposure. The uptake of either chemical was concentration-dependent, with significantly higher uptake at high concentrations at either exposure interval. In contrast, there was no significant difference in whole body residue between single chemicals and the corresponding mixture except for 100 mg l(-1) sodium arsenate at 90 d. However, there was increasing accumulation over time at the high concentration of either chemical alone and their mixture, and this increasing trend was more pronounced in the single chemical exposures than in the mixture. At the concentrations tested in the current study, both chemicals reduced the uptake but enhanced the depuration of the other chemical from the zebrafish. This study represents the first examination of the interaction of two anions-perchlorate and arsenate with respect to toxicokinetics.  相似文献
