Monthly trawl surveys were performed in 1989 in North Bay and South Bay of St Vincent (New Caledonia) with both a shrimp trawl and fish trawl to produce a reference standard of the natural variability of an unexploited tropical soft-bottom fish assemblage. A total of 230 species belonging to 62 families were recorded. The mean density and biomass were 0.18 fishes m-2 and 4.31 g m-2, respectively. The major variations were explained by spatial factors. Species richness, density and biomass were greater in South Bay (204 species, 0.26 fishes m-2 and 5.90 g m-2) than in North Bay (105 species, 0.10 fishes m-2 and 2.71 g m-2), 34% of the species being present in both areas. The North Bay assemblage was characterized by four abundant benthic species (Saurida undosquamis, Gerres ovatus, Secutor ruconius and Upeneus moluccensis) and by numerous pelagic species (Carangidae, Sphyraenidae and Scombridae). The South Bay assemblage was characterized by several Mullidae, Bothidae and Balistidae, and by some rare species usually found on coral reefs (Pomacentridae and Chaetodontidae). These differences were induced by the physical and benthic characteristics of the two bays. North Bay was an homogeneous, confined, deposit area with few benthic organisms, whereas the substrate was more heterogeneous and the benthic organisms more diversified and abundant in South Bay, which was connected to the adjacent reef lagoon. Species richness remained stable in time, except in January when a hurricane disturbed the environment. Seasonal tendencies in species composition were evidenced in North Bay, with an autumn-winter structure opposed to a spring-summer structure, and characterized by the relative importance of the major species. No seasonal tendencies were observed in the organization of the South Bay assemblage. Nevertheless, mean density and biomass were at a minimum in summer in both bays; maxima occurred in winter. Biomass was negatively correlated to both temperature and rainfall, and reflected the population variations of the main species, particularly their reproductive migrations. Thus, the soft-bottom fish assemblages were strongly organized spatially in New Caledonia, but remained relatively stable over time.  相似文献

Regular daylight sampling over 13 mo (February 1985–February 1986) in and adjacent to intertidal forested areas, in small creeks and over accreting mudbanks in the mainstream of a small mangrove-lined estuary in tropical northeastern Queensland, Australia, yielded 112 481 fish from 128 species and 43 families. Species of the families Engraulidae, Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Clupeidae and Atherinidae were numerically dominant in the community. The same species, with the addition ofLates calcarifer (Latidae).Acanthopagrus berda (Sparidae) andLutjanus agentimaculatus (Lutjanidae) dominated total community biomass. During high-tide periods, intertidal forested areas were important habitats for juvenile and adult fish, with grand mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 3.5±2.4 fish m–3 and 10.9±4.5 g m–3, respectively. There was evidence of lower densities and less fish species using intertidal forests in the dry season (August, October), but high variances in catches masked any significant seasonality in mean fish biomass in this habitat. On ebb tides, most fish species (major families; Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Atherinidae, Melanotaeniidae) moved to small shallow creeks, where mean (±1 SE) low-tide density and biomass were 31.3±12.4 fish m–2 and 29.0±12.1 g m–2, respectively. Large variances in catch data masked any seasonality in densities and biomasses, but the mean number of species captured per netting in small creeks was lowest in the dry season (July, August). Species of Engraulidae and Clupeidae, which dominated high-tide catches in the forested areas during the wet season, appeared to move into the mainstream of the estuary on ebbing tides and were captured over accreting banks at low tide. Accreting banks supported a mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 0.4±0.1 fish m–2 and 1.7±0.3 g m–2, respectively, at low tide. There were marked seasonal shifts in fish community composition in the estuary, and catches in succeeding wet seasons were highly dissimilar. Comparison of fish species composition in this and three other mangrove estuaries in the region revealed significant geographic and temporal (seasonal) variation in fish-community structure. Modifications and removal of wetlands proposed for north Queensland may have a devastating effect on the valuable inshore fisheries of this region, because mangrove forests and creeks support high densities of fish, many of which are linked directly, or indirectly (via food chains) to existing commercial fisheries.Contribution No. 493 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

The diversity of soft-bottom polychaete assemblages in one Antarctic (Admiralty Bay) and two Arctic (Kongsfjord and van Mijenfjord) localities was compared. The data sets included 79 (Admiralty Bay), 80 (Kongsfjord) and 44 (van Mijenfjord) samples collected with use of 0.1 m2 van Veen grab. The number of species per sample in Kongsfjord (mean 19.9 ± 8.0 SD) was higher than that in Van Mijenfjord (13.7 ± 8.3) or Admiralty Bay (15.7 ± 9.4). The differences in species numbers reflected differences in numbers of individuals in samples: 310.4 ind/0.1 m2 ± 178.0 in Kongsfjord, 132.7 ind/0.1 m2 ± 88.7 in Van Mijenfjord and 138.9 ind/0.1 m2 ± 91.5 in Admiralty Bay. The Hurlbert diversity for 50 individuals (ES [50]) was similar at all sites: 10.7 ± 3.4 in Kongsfjord, 9.7 ± 4.2 in van Mijenfjord, 10.5 ± 4.9 in Admiralty Bay. The shape of species accumulation curves was also similar for all localities. There was no significant difference (at P < 0.05) either in the total number of species or in species richness as estimated by Chao1 and Chao2 estimators. The generic and family richness at three sites was also similar. We found no substantial differences in the distribution of species among families. At both poles Terebellidae, Ampharetidae, Maldanidae, Spionidae and Polynoidae were dominant in terms of species numbers. The similarity of infaunal polychaete diversity at the polar sites studied contrasts with the substantial differences reported for epi-megafauna. Our study suggests that the patterns of diversity of polar benthic communities are shaped by patterns of habitat heterogeneity which appears to mask any historical processes.  相似文献

In soft-sediment marine and estuarine habitats, population dynamics of resident species are an important aspect of commnity structure and function, yet the population dynamics of many members of these communities remain poorly studied. The population dynamics and secondary production of the infaunal terebellid polychaete Loimia medusa (Savigny) were investigated in a shallow sand habitat of the York River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, between June 1989 and December 1990. Monthly sampling throughout 1 yr revealed that individuals were present year-round with maximum densities of 60 ind m-2 and a life span of 1 yr. Abundances were highest from August through September when two cohorts recruited to the population. Mean individual growth was highest in summer, and appeared to be a function of temperature rather than food limitation. Adults were reproductive from May through October and exhibited high fecundity; the number of oocytes segment-1 ranged from 201 to 15840 among worms. Larvae initially appeared approximately 1 mo after gametes were first observed in adult L. medusa, and these larvae appeared to spend less than 1 mo in the plankton. Abundances of larvae in the water column were significantly higher around new moon, suggesting lunar spawning periodicity. New recruits attained sexual maturity within 2 mo of settlement. Secondary production was 3.3 g ash-free dry wt m-2 yr-1 and the P/B (production/biomass) ratio was 3.0. Despite equilibrium species characteristics such as large size, high fecundity, and planktonic larvae, L. medusa exhibits some characteristics typically ascribed to opportunistic species, namely, the capacity for rapid growth and maturation, a short life span and a relatively high P/B ratio. This mixture of life history characteristics emphasizes that there is no simple dichotomy between opportunistic and equilibrium species. We caution that the dominance of large infaunal polychaetes in soft-bottom estuarine and marine environments may not be a useful indicator of undisturbed habitats.  相似文献

A highly diverse soft-bottom community in Kingston Harbour, Jamaica is described to provide additional information on the structure of tropical benthic communities. It is shown that the community has a level of diversity unique to stable tropical environments, that dominance by a few species is greatly reduced,and that there are no true parallels to this community in similar environments. The community described seems to fit Sanders' stability-time hypothesis. The density and standing crop of the community are low, and possible explanations for this are discussed. Continuous year-round breeding, short life-spans, and fast turnover rates are suggested as the most important factors regulating biomass in the community described.  相似文献

In most protected areas of the Indian Himalayan region site/habitat characteristics, community diversity and distribution pattern, vegetation composition (richness of native and endemic species), structural patterns, economic importance of forest communities and community priorities have rarely been studied. Therefore, the present study has focused on these in the buffer zone of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. Seventy-six woody species (trees: 24; shrubs: 52) and 13 forest communities have been recorded between 2300–3800 m asl. Tree density ranged from 533–1220 ind ha-1, tree basal area from 14.68-80.28 m2ha-1 and shrub density from 1490–6695 ind ha-1. Mean density of trees was significantly lower in temperate forests in comparison to subalpine forests. Richness of trees ranged from 3–18 and shrubs from 5–29. Species diversity (H') of trees ranged from 0.45-2.08 and shrubs from 0.90-3.14. In the temperate zone, species richness and altitude had significant positive correlations whereas in the subalpine zone the two variables were negatively correlated. The native species were high in the area (> 65% species) and in communities (> 70% species), and was highest for the Picea smithiana-Pinus wallichiana mixed community, whereas the maximum numbers of natives and endemic species were recorded in the Pinus wallichiana community. The density and richness of non-natives were found to be significantly lower in comparison to the natives. Economic importance and conservation value of the communities were assessed and communities prioritized. Monitoring of the identified habitats, species, populations and communities, and development of appropriate strategies for their conservation and management are suggested.  相似文献

The biomass of the macrobenthic communities of the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia is analysed with special reference to tropical soft-bottom assemblages. The samples were obtained in 1986 from 350 Smith-McIntyre grabs as well as by diving over an area of 3 500 m2, and covered a wide size-range of benthic organisms. The classification of the biomass data into taxonomic groups revealed the following: (1) a zoobenthic biomass (mean=13 g ash-free dry wt m-2) that is high compared to values previously published for tropical systems, but fairly low compared to those recorded for medium and high latitudes; (2) a large macrophytic biomass (45% of ash-free dry wt); (3) dominance by weight of sponges, molluscs and cnidarians over the other faunal groups. The distribution of the biomass among the trophic groups revealed the following: (1) the dominance by weight of suspension-feeders, which account for 67% of the total zoobenthic ash-free dry wt; (2) the absence of trophic group amensalism between filter-feeders and deposit-feeders whatever the degree of bottom muddiness; (3) the existence of a relationship between the biomass of surface deposit-feeders and ATP at the surface layer of the sediment, suggesting that this group feeds preferentially on living particles. Differences in trophic structure between the muddy-bottom, greysand and white-sand communities of the lagoon reflect the functional characteristics of each bottom type.  相似文献

Benthic infauna was collected with a 0.2 m2 van Veen grab at 48 stations in Puget Sound, Washington, USA during February–March 1969. All the crustaceans, lamellibranchs, and echinoderms were identified and counted. Particle size distributions and nitrogen contents of the sediments, depths, and temperature and salinity of the bottom water were determined at all stations. The first three factors of a factor analysis applied to between-stations measures of affinity, explained 41.26% of the total variance. The first factor had representative stations on shallow-water mud bottoms, the second factor on bottoms dominated by coarse sediments, and the third factor had representative stations on deep-water mud bottoms. The multiple correlation coefficients for each of the three factors with depth and mean particle size of the sediments were 0.752, 0.897, and 0.706, respectively. The factor analysis did not result in clusters of stations that could be interpreted as discrete benthic communities. The number of species per 0.6 m2 ranged from 8 to 55 species, with a mean of 26.4 species. The frequency distribution of specimens among the species was in good agreement with a log-normal distribution. The number of specimens per 0.6 m2 ranged from 57 to 1733 specimens, with a mean of 584.0 specimens. The species diversity ranged from 0.34 bits/individual to 4.35 bits/individual, and there was a weak trend of increasing diversity towards coarser sediments. The first three factors applied to the matrix of between-species correlation coefficients explained 43.72% of the total variance. With each factor there was one group of species with high positive loadings and one group with high negative loadings. Each group of species could be identified with particular environments. The standing crop, measured as ash-free dry weight, ranged from 0.490 to 54.093 g/m2, with a mean of 13.752 g/m2. Only about 24% of the variability in standing crop could be attributed to variability in sediment types, nitrogen content in the sediments, salinity of the bottom water, and depth.  相似文献

The midlittoral zone at Paitilla Beach, Panama, Is occupied by a group of organisms closely associated with Tetraclita stalactifera panamensis. Upon death, this cirripede provides housing for a number of species bound by common substrata and interacting with each other due to their close physical proximity; the faunistic group associated with each barnacle qualifies then, as a small, well-defined community which represents a subsample of the more comprehensive midlittoral community dominated by T. stalactifera panamensis. In patches where it is abundant, T. stalactifera panamensis occupies 28% of the surface area available. It has a relative abundance of only 1% of the specimens found in the zone, but all the other 95 species (with an average of 26, 810 individuals/m2) identified from the area are associated either with the parietal canals, or the external or internal surfaces of T. stalactifera panamensis tests. Each one of these structures represents a habitat which provides surface for attachment, shelter, or both, to 37 species of polychaetes, 32 of mollusks, 20 of crustaceans, 3 of actiniarians, 2 of pycogonids, 2 of sipunculans and an unknown number of tanaid, nemertean and turbellarian species. The single most diverse space-niche is represented by the parietal canals (H=0.783), occupied mostly by polychaetes. dead barnacles harbor an average of 131 individuals per test, which compose a fauna of higher diversity (H=0.678) than that associated with live barnacles (H=0.163). The latter contain 53 specimens per test on the average. Although there is considerable overlapping of species associated with the different T. stalactifera panamensis space-niches, mollusks are clearly more abundant on internal surfaces, polychaetes in parietal, canals; Balanus spp. on external surfaces, and anemones at the base of the parapet on the external surfaces of the tests. Over 220 species of macro-invertebrates were identified from the rocky intertidal at Paitilla. Most of the species are concentrated in the lower (157 species, 1824 specimens/m2) and midlittoral (96 species, 26, 810 specimens/m2) intertidal zones. Splash zone is depauperate (6 species, 1578 specimens/m2). Of the entire fauna identified from the intertidal, 73 species (33%) occur in more than one zone and 147 (67%) are restricted to a particular belt. This last category of zone-restricted species breaks down into 42% for the lower intertidal, 17% for the midlittoral, 6% for the intermediate zone, and 2% for the splash zone.  相似文献

Spatial and seasonal distribution pattern, life history and production of three species of Neomysis (Mysidacea) which commonly occur in northwestern subarctic Pacific coastal waters, were investigated throughout the year in the Akkeshi-ko estuary, northern Japan. The most abundant species Neomysis awatschensis (annual mean density: 179.8 inds. m−2, biomass: 108.8 mg DW m−2) occurred at the inner part of the estuary including low salinity areas with no clear preference for the seagrass bed. The second most abundant Neomysis mirabilis (mean density: 95.8 inds. m−2, biomass: 90.1 mg DW m−2) occurred at relatively saline seagrass site throughout the year. Occurrence of Neomysis czerniawskii in the estuary was limited to the seagrass bed during summer when their population mainly consisted of juveniles, suggesting that this species is a seasonal migrant between the estuary and the marine environment. Both N. awatschensis and N. mirabilis populations were composed of two generation types, a larger sized overwintering and smaller sized spring/summer generations; however, each species had a different reproductive strategy. N. awatschensis was characterized by fast growth to maturity at a smaller size than N. mirabilis with a relatively high fecundity during warm season, suggesting that this species is an r-strategist which can utilize opportunistically a wide variety of habitats. In contrast, the seagrass bed resident N. mirabilis was a K-strategist which matures at a larger size producing fewer but larger offspring. The annual production of N. awatschensis (0.57–0.70 g DW m−2, mean of the whole estuary) and N. mirabilis (0.58–0.68 g DW m−2, mean of the seagrass bed) at their respective habitats was comparable. Consequently, species-specific life history and distribution pattern are concluded to allow Neomysis spp. to coexist in the estuary and the high carrying capacity of seagrass bed is suggested to contribute to maintain their high biomass level.  相似文献

The export of wetland-derived materials to the coastal ocean (i.e., the “Outwelling” hypothesis) has received considerable attention over the past several decades. While a number of studies have shown that estuaries export appreciable amounts of nutrients and carbon, few studies have attempted to estimate the importance of estuarine sources for the coastal carbon budgets in river-dominated coastal ecosystems. A novel tidal prism model was developed to examine estuarine-shelf exchanges in the Barataria estuary, a deltaic estuary located in the north-central Gulf of Mexico. This estuary has been the site of a massive wetland loss, and it has been hypothesized that carbon export from the eroding coastal wetlands supports the development of a large hypoxic zone in the coastal Gulf of Mexico. The model results show that the Barataria estuary receives nitrogen through the tidal passes and releases carbon to the coastal ocean. The mean calculated tidal water discharge of 6930 m3 s−1 is equivalent to about 43% of the lower Mississippi River discharge. The annual total organic carbon (TOC) export is 109 million kg, or 57 gC m2 yr−1 when prorated to the total water area of the estuary. This carbon export is equivalent to a loss of 0.5 m of wetland soil horizon over an area of 8.4 km2, and accounts for about 34% of the observed annual wetland loss in the estuary between 1978 and 2000. Compared to the lower Mississippi River, the Barataria estuary appears to be a very small source of TOC for the northern Gulf of Mexico (2.7% of riverine TOC), and is unlikely to have a significant influence on the development of the Gulf's hypoxia.  相似文献

To understand natural and anthropic control of mangrove vegetation in the Gulf of Kachchh, a study was undertaken of its vegetation structure. Over 2 years (1999–2000) at three sites, mangrove vegetation was studied, including tree density, tree height, tree girth at breast height (GBH), canopy index, regeneration class and recruitment class, together with physico-chemical characteristics of water and sediment and the textural aspects of sediments. Reflecting the hot, arid hinterland of Gujarat, ambient temperatures and salinities are high in this macrotidal estuary, decreasing somewhat during the monsoon. The littoral soil supporting the mangrove is abundant in silty loam, silty clay and slity clay loam. The density of mature trees (Mangrove plants of GBH > 25 cm) ranged from 2088/ha to 3011/ha, the height of the trees ranged from 1.42 m to 9 m and the maximum mean GBH at all three sites was 33 cm, and the mean canopy indices ranged between 4.77 m2 and 10.45 m2. The maximum density of regeneration stages was 100,800/ha while that of recruitment stages was only 3,040/ha. While quite severely impacted by anthropic exploitation at one site, the mangrove ecosystem of Gulf of Kachchh was found to be mainly healthy and supporting associated organisms. The ecological and social role of the mangrove, and the potential for its future conservation are briefly discussed in the light of current legislation.  相似文献

Monthly samples were collected in oceanic waters off Discovery Bay, Jamaica, in 60- and 200-m vertical hauls, using 200- and 64-m mesh plankton nets, from June 1989 to July 1991. Length-weight regressions were derived for twelve genera of copepods (R2=0.79 to 0.97). For eight occasions spanning the study period, biomass estimates generated from these length-weight regressions differed by only 3% from direct weight determinations. The mean ash content of copepods was 7.1%, and the energy density was 20.8 kJ g-1 ash-free dry weight (AFDW). Mean annual biomass of the total copepod community in the upper 60 m was 1.83 mg AFDW m-3 (range 1.14 to 2.89 mg AFDW m-3), and for the 200-m water column was 0.96 mg AFDW m-3 (range 0.12 to 1.99 mg AFDW m-3). Estimates of generation times for five common taxa ranged from 16.1 to 33.4 d. None of the taxa investigated displayed isochronal development; in general, stage duration increased in later copepodite stages. Weight increments showed a significant decrease in later copepodite stages, but with strong reversal of the trend from stage 5 to adult female in most species. Daily specific growth rates also declined in later copepodite stages, and ranged from 1.49 d-1 in stage 1–2 Paracalanus/Clausocalanus spp. to 0.04 in stage 5-female of Oithona plumifera. Progressive food limitation of somatic copepodite growth and egg production is postulated. Naupliar production was 50.4 to 59.5% of copepodite production, and egg production was 35.1 to 27.7% of copepodite production in the 60-and 200-m water columns, respectively. Total annual copepod production, including copepodites, nauplii, eggs and exuviae, was 160 kJ m-2 yr-1 for the upper 60 m and 304 kJ m-2 yr-1 for the upper 200 m. Secondary production of the copepod community in oceanic waters off Discovery Bay approaches 50% of the corresponding value in tropical neritic waters.  相似文献

An assessment of litter and detritus decomposition and nitrogen content of decomposing litter is presented for ten important seaweeds within a southern Strait of Georgia (British Columbia, Canada) seaweed community sampled from August 1975 until October 1976. Litter decomposition rates varied among species with the time required for litter to disappear from litter bags ranging from 6 d for the lamina of Nereocystis luetkeana to about 70 d for Fucus distichus. Decomposition was characterized by an accelerating increase in the nitrogen: dry weight ratio of remnant litter as decomposition proceeded. Iridaea cordata detritus decomposed most rapidly, at 5.7% d-1, while rates for Gigartina papillata, N. luetkeana, Laminaria saccharina and Laminaria groenlandica ranged from 1.8 to 3.6% d-1. The remaining species decomposed more slowly. There was a tendency toward more rapid decomposition with decreasing crude fibre content and detritus particle size; however, it appears that morphology, habitat and growth rate are also correlated with relative decomposition rates. Of 43 taxa identified within quantitative litter collections, F. distichus (41%), I. cordata (26%), N. luetkeana (27%) and Laminaria spp. (4%) accounted for 98% of total deposition with mean peak accumulation occurring in August and September from a low near zero in January and February. Litter distribution was patchy, with most litter decomposing near its place of deposition. The application of litter decomposition rates to measured litter accumulation in a mathematical simulation of decomposition predicted the rate of seaweed litter decomposition to peak at about 1.1 g AFDW (ash-free dry weight) m-2 d-1 in early September from a mid-winter low near zero. In total, 56±4% of decomposing litter formed detritus, with the remainder being released as soluble matter. The annual contribution of seaweed litter biomass to detrital pathways from our study site was calculated to be 152 g AFDW m-2.  相似文献

The copepod community observed during an 18-month period at the mouth of eutrophic Kingston Harbour, Jamaica, was dominated by small species of Parvocalanus, Temora, Oithona, and Corycaeus. Mean copepod biomass was 22.1 mg AFDW m−3 (331 mg m−2). Annual production was 1679 kJ m−2, partitioned as 174 kJ m−2 naupliar, 936 kJ m−2 copepodite, 475 kJ m−2 egg and 93 kJ m−2 exuvial production. All nauplii, most copepodites and many adults, equivalent to half of the biomass and production, were missed by a standard 200-μm plankton net, emphasizing the importance of nauplii and small species in secondary production estimates. The evidence suggests that growth rates and production are generally not food limited, and we speculate that size-selective predation shapes the structure of the harbour community. Biomass and production are higher than previous estimates for tropical coastal waters, but comparable to other eutrophic tropical embayments and many productive temperate ecosystems. Far from being regions of low productivity, tropical zooplankton communities may have significant production and deserve greater research attention than they currently receive. Effects of the predatory naticid snail Polinices duplicatus (Say) on species composition, diversity and density, of the infauna of intertidal sand-flats at Barnstable Harbor, Massachusetts, USA, were studied using field experiments. Responses of molluscs (prey of P. duplicatus) and nonmolluscs (nonprey) were considered separately to distinguish between the effects of feeding and sediment disturbance during foraging. The fauna of 0.25 m2 predator-exclusion cages, coarse-mesh cages, sieved areas, and controls was followed for 1 yr. Species associations within cages from which predators were excluded were denser, more diverse, and richer in molluscs than those in other treatments. Larger areas (3×3 m) of natural bottom were fenced and maintained as snail exclosures and enclosures during two feeding seasons. For both molluscs and nonmolluscs, diversity (H'), number of species, evenness (SD), and density all decreased with increasing snail density. Intense predation pressure on molluscs and selective feeding on thin-shelled bivalves, which were rare, removed individuals and species of molluscs from the community. Comparison of samples taken inside and outside trails made by snails showed that disturbance of the surface sediment layers by snails decreased the abundance of spionid polychaetes and total nonmolluscs. The sipunculan Phascolopsis gouldi and the bivalve Gemma gemma dominated the community in all experimental treatments and were little affected by the activity of Polinices duplicatus. Predation and disturbance by snails lowered community diversity by removing individuals of the less abundant species, and generally maintained population densities below the level where strong competition would occur.  相似文献

This study investigates effects of wave exposure on beds of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the infaunal communities associated with them. Nine sites of varying wave exposure were sampled near Groenrivier, on the west coast of South Africa. Wave exposure was measured using a Palumbi device, and exposure ranged from 7.17×103 to 18.49×103 N m–2. Percentage mussel cover at each site was measured using 50×50 cm quadrats, and three 10×10 cm samples were removed from the mussel beds in the mid-intertidal zones of each site for examination of infauna. Percentage mussel cover, mean mussel length, mussel biomass and mussel bed depth all peaked at intermediate exposures, declining towards both the most sheltered and most exposed sites. Infaunal species diversity and richness both showed the reverse trend, peaking at the most sheltered and most exposed sites, and declining at intermediate exposures. Neither infaunal abundance, nor biomass, was significantly correlated to wave exposure, although abundance was highest at sheltered sites and biomass greatest at the most exposed site, which was dominated by limpets and large robust polychaetes.Communicated by J.P. A seasonal study of the inshore fish community was conducted in 1981 and 1982 at two stations in Málaga Bay (SE Spain). A total of 66 fish species were caught. Two families, Clupeidae (68.6%) and Engraulidae (28.5%), dominated in numbers, and Carangidae (54.3%) and Sparidae (29.1%) in biomass for both zones. There were two periods of high fish density in each zone: winter (2.2 g m-2) and autumn (2.0 g m-2) in the western zone and spring (2.95 g m-2) and summer (3.6 g m-2) in the eastern zone. Species diversity was relatively high during spring (2.95 and 3.00) and summer (2.32 and 2.44), showing clear variation with other zones of the Spanish coasts. An increase in diversity and number of fish species from north to south was observed. The area studied (0 to 15 m deep) serves as a nursery for larvae and young fish of several species appearing in the catches. The zoogeographical affinities of the fish species caught are: tropicals 25.7%, boreals 24.2%, Iberian-Moroccan 14%, endemics 4.5%.  相似文献

Kelp regeneration was observed for the first time in St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada in an area known to have been devoid of macroalgae for several years. The regeneration was destroyed by sea urchins within 10 months. Experimentally induced kelp regeneration met a similar fate under normal grazing pressure. At the lowest sea urchin biomass and density encountered re-establishment of mature kelp stands seems highly unlikely. The sea urchin population required to suppress kelp regeneration is fed by benthic microalgae. Diatoms and other pioneer algal community species were found in the guts of sea urchins. The mean standing crop of benthic microalgae was found to be, 2.2 g C m-2 and production estimated as ca 15 g C m-2yr-1 at 8m depth. Most of the primary production of St. Margaret's Bay has been lost with the disappearing kelp populations.  相似文献

The effects of a sudden, extraordinary temperature rise upon a soft-bottom community in the northern Baltic Sea were studied continuously for more than a month, during the summer of 1968. The mean bundance of the total macrofauna on the muddy bottom amounted to ca 6×103 individuals · m-2, on the sandy bottom to 2×104 individuals· m-2. The meiofauna, only sampled in the mud, averaged 1×106 individuals · m-2, with nematodes, oligochaetes and ostracods as dominating groups. During this period, the redoxpotential-discontinuity (RPD)-layer successively moved upwards in the muddy bottom, being relatively stable in the sand. The mud surface showed a succession of microbial communities. The initially oxidized, yellow surface film, with patches of diatoms and red Spirula, changed to a more grayish layer, with purple areas here interpreted as Chromatium and white spots of Beggiatoa. The latter dominated during the last part of the period, covering vast areas of the bottom like a gigantic cobweb. The endofauna was forced upwards by the emerging RPD-layer, the more sensitive components dying off, facultative anaerobes and nematodes flourishing. The described temperature increase of about 10 C° simulates the effects of a 3000 MW nuclear plant.  相似文献
