Levels of glutathione, in both reduced and oxidized form, and glutathione reductase activity were monitored in needles of healthy and damaged spruce trees (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) during the course of four vegetation periods at two natural sites. The glutathione content and glutathione reductase activity showed a pronounced annual rhythm in undamaged trees, whereas damaged spruce trees deviated significantly from this course. In comparison with undamaged trees, damaged trees showed markedly increased levels of glutathione during the test period of 1989-1991. However, glutathione reductase activity differed in damaged and undamaged trees, only in 1989-1990. The ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG ratio) was slightly higher in damaged trees, and the highest levels were found during the winter months. In the case of damaged trees, a correlation between GSH/GSSG ratio and current ozone levels at the sites could be clearly established. The present results indicate that damaged trees suffer from increased oxidative stress, especially in the period from June to October.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged simulated acid rain on the biochemistry of Scots pine needles were studied in Finnish Lapland. Pine trees were exposed by spraying the foliage and soil with either clean water or simulated acid rain (SAR; both sulphuric and nitric acids) over the period 1985-1991. The concentrations of carbohydrates (starch, glucose, fructose, sucrose) in one-year-old pine needles were not affected by SAR-treatments. The SAR-treatments did not have significant effects on protein bound amino acids, which was true also for most of the free amino acids. However, the citrulline concentration was over three-fold greater in the foliage of pines exposed to SAR of pH 3 compared to irrigated controls. The concentrations of total phenolics, individual low molecular weight phenolics and soluble proanthocyanidins were not affected by the treatments, but insoluble proanthocyanidins had increased in acid-treated trees. Some of the studied biochemical compounds showed significant differences between two sub-areas (similar treatments) only 120 m apart.  相似文献

CO(2) assimilation rate, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content of current and previous years' needles of Norway spruce were measured in May 1988, 205 days after the cessation of ozone fumigation during the summer of 1987. Rates of assimilation were consistently higher for both needle year age classes for ozone fumigated trees in comparison to control trees, although only statistically significant for part of the day for current year's needles. A 26% and 48% stimulation, overall, in mean daily rates of assimilation for current and previous years' needles of ozone fumigated trees was observed. This was due to an enhanced apparent quantum yield and light saturated rate of assimilation of ozone fumigated trees. The temperature response regression of assimilation versus temperature was also greater, such that at any given temperature, assimilation was higher for ozone treated trees than control trees. Stomatal conductance was greater for ozone fumigated trees than the controls, but this was only marginally statistically significant. Moreover, there was a consistent increase in chlorophyll content in both year classes in ozone-treated trees. These results are discussed in relation to a possible long term effect of ozone fumigation upon the processes of conifer winter hardening and spring de-hardening.  相似文献

The influence of an ozone + acid mist treatment on photosynthetic pigments has been examined with the needles of the (Picea abies) clones 11, 14, 16, and 133 by spectrophotometric analysis of the total pigment extract and of single components upon HPLC separation (Part A), and in terms of a detailed pigment analysis of the 1987 and 1986 needles of clone 14 by TLC (Part B). Clone 14 had been already analysed prior to the onset of the experiment. At the end of the 14-month experiment, which incorporated frost events during a simulated winter period, neither symptoms corresponding to those of spruce Type I or IV decline, nor those of ozone damage could be observed. However, the 1986 needles of the trees on soil 1, which exhibit an adequate nutrient content, showed zonal chlorosis independently of the ozone + acid mist treatment. Analysis of variance of chlorophyll contents and needle ages showed a clear reduction to nearly 50% in the 1986 needles of clone 11, soil 1, and clone 16, soil 2. In contrast, clones 14 and 16 (soil 1) formed significantly more chlorophylls during the shorter exposure time in the 1987 flush. The detailed analysis of the individual pigment components of clone 14 needles provided no evidence for a destructive influence of the treatment on the chlorophylls, xanthophylls and beta-carotene in the two needle generations which had developed during the experiment, in spite of the distinct K deficiency of the 1986 needles of the trees on soil 2 and the common chlorosis of the needles of the trees on soil 1. The observed increase in violaxanthin content upon O(3)-treatment observed in clone 14 can be considered as an expression of the protective function of the xanthophylls against photooxidative processes. In conclusion, the observed differences in the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents are better correlated with the individual clone and soil character than with the ozone + acid mist treatment. Comparing the results of the pigment analyses of the needles the differences in the pigment concentrations reflect the N and K contents (Pfirrmann et al., 1990), which differ significantly between the clones. Thus it is not possible to pool the pigment data of all clones without considering the different nutrient levels.  相似文献

An open top chamber experiment was carried out in the summer of 2003 to examine the effect of nitrous acid (HONO) gas on the physiological status of Scots pine saplings (Pinus sylvestris). Four-year-old pine trees were exposed to two different levels of HONO gas (at ca. 2.5 ppb and 5.0 ppb) and a control (filtered air) from early evening to early morning (18:00-6:00), in duplicate open top chambers. Significant decreases in the ratios of chlorophylls a to b, an increase in the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, and a reduction of maximum yield of PS II (F(v)/F(m)) in pine needles were also observed after the 2 months' fumigation. Cation contents of pine needles were also decreased by the fumigation with HONO gas. The results could be explained by the harmful effects of OH radicals, generated from photolysis of HONO gas, and/or aqueous phase HONO (NO(2)(-)/HONO), on the photosynthetic capacity of pine needles.  相似文献

To obtain an insight into the effects of a high ammonium deposition on trees young, coniferous trees were planted in pots in a greenhouse and treated with artificial ammonium-enriched rainwater. Application of 480 kg ammonium N ha(-1) year(-1) resulted in an increase of the shoot/root ratio. The biomass of fine roots strongly declined, as did the numbers of mycorrhizae. The fructification of the mycorrhizal fungi was totally inhibited. The nitrogen content of the needles was enhanced, but the levels of potassium, magnesium and calcium decreased sharply. The phosphorus content remained almost unaffected. Much of the nitrogen was stored as arginine. The levels of leaf pigments also increased. Within one year of treatment many of the trees died. The trees that were treated with 48 kg ammonium-N ha(-1) year(-1) did not show any signs of deterioration.  相似文献

In the present field study the role of ascorbate in scavenging the harmful atmospheric trace gases O3 and NO2 was examined. For this purpose ascorbate contents were determined in needles of adult Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) during three consecutive years. Ascorbate contents were correlated with ambient tropospheric O3 and NO2 concentrations and with meteorological parameters. The results showed a strong correlation of atmospheric O3 but not of atmospheric NO2 concentrations with the apoplastic content of ascorbate during the seasonal course. Ascorbate contents in needle extracts did not correlate with ambient trace gas concentrations. In the apoplastic space, but not in needle extracts ascorbate contents correlate highly significantly with global radiation. From these results it is assumed that apoplastic ascorbate in Scots pine needles is adapted to the actual atmospheric O3 concentration to mediate immediate detoxification of O3, while the atmospheric O3 concentration itself is largely dependent on light intensity.  相似文献

In northern Japan, the growth of Picea abies Karst., and Picea glehnii Masters, which have been planted along the highways, is often suppressed due to several environmental stresses. To examine the adverse effects of deicing salt, the primary source of stress,we measured needle life span, photosynthetic capacity, and water potential and transpiration rate of the two spruce species at a site with damaged trees, near the roadside and a site with healthy trees, located far from the highway. Results from the analysis showed large amounts of sodium and chlorine in the soil and snow at the damaged site. These elements had accumulated in the needles of the spruce. Moreover, physiological traits of the spruce, at the damaged site were also affected. Therefore, we concluded that poor physiological traits might be attributed to an accumulation of deicing salt in the needles, resulting in the suppression of tree growth.  相似文献

The effects of simulated acid rain on the phyllosphere microflora of pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were studied experimentally in northern Finland during the summer of 1988. Trees were irrigated with artificial acid rain of pH4 and pH3 (H(2)SO(4) and HNO(3), weight ratio of S:N=2.86:1). Untreated trees and trees irrigated with spring water (pH6) were used as controls. Two sampling heights (0.5m and 2m) were used. The needles were colonized exclusively by epiphytic fungi, mainly Aureobasidium pullulans (de Bary) Arnaud. The lower branches had significantly more epiphytic fungi than the upper branches. Compared to the control trees, the numbers of epiphytic fungi were significantly decreased on the needles of trees irrigated with acid rain. Acid rain affected the number of epiphytic fungi equally at both sampling heights. The species composition of the epiphytic fungi was not affected by the acid treatments.  相似文献

Responses of free amino acids to botanical assimilation of free cyanide were investigated. Young rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L. cv. XZX 45) were grown in nutrient solution amended with free cyanide (KCN). Cyanide was analyzed in solution as well as in plant materials to estimate the phyto-assimilation potential. Free amino acids in different parts of plants were also measured to determine metabolic responses to KCN exposure. Phyto-assimilation of KCN was obvious, and the rates were positively correlated to the concentration supplied. Although changes in total amino acid content in plant materials were negligible during KCN metabolism (p?>?0.05), responses of different amino acids to KCN treatments were quite different. All treatments with KCN increased the content of proline (Pro) and isoleucine (Ile) in roots significantly compared with control (p?<?0.05), while changes of aspartic acid, lysine, and histidine in roots were more evident at higher KCN treatments (p?<?0.05). Results indicate that the content of Pro, Ile, and tyrosine showed pronounced increase in shoots of rice seedlings exposed to KCN at 1.44 mg CN/L or higher (p?<?0.05). Other amino acids slightly changed in all plant materials exposed to KCN (p?>?0.05). Results indicate that specific amino acids in rice seedlings showed positive response to non-toxic concentrations of exogenous KCN. These findings could provide additional insights into the inducible mechanisms underlying the involvement of amino acids in KCN metabolism.  相似文献

The effects of potassium fertilization and ozone stress were investigated in a clone of Picea abies (L.) Karst, by studies of the uptake of CO(2) by the crowns, the element content, on leaching of the youngest needles, and the longevity of the needles. All plants were exposed to 0.075 microl litre(-1) SO(2) from January to April 1986. The average ozone concentrations applied during the subsequent growing season (May-December) were 0, 0.027, 0.050 and 0.100 microl litre(-1). Half of the trees received liquid fertilizer applications from April to July 1986. CO(2) uptake by the crowns was significantly reduced in non-fertilized plants at ozone doses of 100-200 microl litre(-1) h, whereas similar reductions were recorded in fertilized plants only above an ozone dose of 300 microl litre(-1) h. Independent of the fertilization, however, the concentrations of calcium, magnesium and nitrogen in the needles increased in parallel with the ozone dose, whilst potassium, phosphorus and sulphur showed little response to ozone. In both nutrient regimes, the diffusive loss of elements from chloroform-washed needles was similar and tended to be reduced at the highest ozone concentration, when relating the leachate to the corresponding element content in the needles. Needles formed in the highest ozone treatment were significantly shed during the succeeding year, regardless of the nutrient supply. It appears that increased potassium supply has little compensating effect on ozone stress in spruce.  相似文献

The effect of ozone (< 10, 200, or 400 microg m(-3)), on foliar nutrient concentrations of Picea abies were determined by fumigating potted grafts from mature trees (> 55 and 125 years), representing six clones, in open-top chambers at two locations in Norway. The concentration of nutrients in needles of grafted plants were significantly affected by clone and location. Generally, the concentrations of nutrients were not affected by ozone, but a significant increase in the concentrations of potassium and iron in two of the clones were found. These two clones were the only ones injured (yellow needles) by the fumigation.  相似文献

Within the framework of the UN-ECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) critical levels of ozone for forest trees and crops have been determined. In this paper procedures are presented for constructing maps of The Netherlands showing measured ozone concentrations for comparison with the critical levels. The critical ozone levels for forest trees and crops are exceeded widely and frequently in The Netherlands. The frequency and size of exceedances depend on meteorological conditions: during a hot, sunny summer like 1989 or 1990 exceedances of the critical levels by a factor of two or three were observed in the whole of The Netherlands; in a cold, rainy summer like 1991 or 1993 only minor exceedances were observed in some parts (mainly in the south) of the country.  相似文献

Free radical generation potential of automobile exhaust gas was examined by measuring hydroxyl (OH) radical photo-formation rates in exhaust gas-scrubbing water. Effects of automobile exhausts on physiological status of Japanese red pine trees (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) were also investigated to elucidate the mechanism how the free radicals derived from exhaust gas damage higher plants. Gasoline and diesel exhaust gases were scrubbed into pure water. Potential photo-formation rates of OH radical in aqueous phase (normalized to sun light intensity of clear sky midday on May 1 at 34°N) for gasoline and diesel cars were ave. 51 and 107 μM h−1 m−3 of exhaust gas, respectively. Nitrite was a dominant source (ca. 70-90%) of photochemical formation of OH radical in both gasoline and diesel car exhausts. The scrubbed solution of diesel car exhaust gas was sprayed for six times per week to needles of pine tree seedlings in open top chambers. Control, exhaust + mannitol (added as OH radical scavenger), and nitrite + nitrate standard solution (equivalent levels existed in the exhaust gas) were also sprayed. Two months sprays indicated that the sprayed solutions of diesel exhaust and nitrite + nitrate caused a decrease of maximum photosynthetic rate and stomata conductance in pine needles while the control and exhaust + mannitol solution showed no effects on photosynthetic activities of pine needles. These results indicated that OH radicals generated mainly from photolysis of nitrite occurring in the scrubbing solution of exhaust gas are responsible for the decrease of photosynthetic activities of pine needles.  相似文献

The hydroxyl radical (*OH) is generated in polluted dew on the needle surfaces of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.). This free radical, which is a potent oxidant, is assumed to be a cause of ecophysiological disorders of declining trees on the urban-facing side of Mt. Gokurakuji, western Japan. Mists of *OH-generating N(III) (HNO2 and NO2-) and HOOH + Fe + oxalate solutions (50 and 100 microM, pH 5.1-5.4) simulating the dew water were applied to the foliage of pine seedlings grown in open-top chambers in the early morning. Needles treated with 100 microM N(III) tended to have a greater maximum CO2 assimilation rate (Amax), a greater stomatal conductance (g(s)) and a greater needle nitrogen content (Nneedle), suggesting that N(III) mist acts as a fertilizer rather than as a phytotoxin. On the other hand, needles treated with 100 microM HOOH + Fe + oxalate solution showed the smallest Amax, g(s), and Nneedle, suggesting that the combination of HOOH + Fe + oxalate caused a decrease in needle productivity. The effects of HOOH + Fe + oxalate mist on pine needles were very similar to the symptoms of declining trees at Mt. Gokurakuji.  相似文献

The needles of clonal Norway spruce grown in environmental chambers on two different soils (an acidic soil 1 and a calcareous soil 2) and exposed to two levels of ozone fumigation (a low level combined with neutral mist = control, and an elevated one combined with acid mist = treatment) were analyzed for their frost hardiness. No effect of ozone was observed on either the development of frost resistance during the hardening phase or on the decrease in frost resistance during the dehardening phase. The preliminary results of Brown et al. (1987) and Barnes and Davidson (1988), which indicated that ozone treatment predisposes plants to winter injury, could thus not be confirmed. Frost resistance was, however, distinctly influenced by the content of the mineral nutrients of the soils. The pronounced K(+) deficiency of the needles of the trees growing on the neutral soil (Alps) had less effect on the development of frost resistance than did the Ca(++) and Mg(++) deficiency of the needles of the trees grown on the acidic soil 1 (Bavarian Forest). The variability of frost resistance between the different clones on soil 1 was partly attributed to fluctuations in the mineral nutrient content of the needles, rather than to a genetic predisposition.  相似文献

Enzymatic activity (peroxidase, glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamine synthetase), foliage buffering capacity, soluble protein and nitrogen content were measured in current and previous year needles from young spruce (Picea abies) and fir (Abies alba). The trees were exposed to low levels of SO(2) and/or O(3) and simulated acidic precipitation (pH 4.0) in open-top chambers from 1983 through 1988. Needle samples were taken during March 1988 at the end of the five-year fumigation period. Exposure to SO(2) substantially increased sulphur content in both needle age classes of spruce and fir, and concomitantly reduced the foliage buffering capacity index (BCI), whereas the combined fumigation with SO(2) and O(3) had no effect on BCI. Peroxidase activity was markedly higher in year-old needles compared to current-year needles. However, trees from the SO(2) and SO(2) + O(3) treatments exhibited statistically significant stimulated peroxidase activities. Similarly, changes in the activities of the nitrogen-metabolizing enzymes indicated an altered cellular function of the trees after the long-term pollution stress. Levels of activity of both glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthetase were increased by exposure to SO(2), especially in spruce. Although glutamate dehydrogenase in spruce was affected by all treatments, such changes in activity were found in fir only with the SO(2) treatment. The highest activity of glutamine synthetase, however, occurred in the older needles of trees exposed to SO(2) + O(3). Total nitrogen concentration was either unaffected by the pollutant treatments or decreased in spruce compared to the controls. No statistically significant changes due to the fumigation were found in soluble protein concentrations. Results indicated that chronic exposure to air pollutants lead to alterations in metabolic processes in conifer needles, detectable either by changes in typical stress indicating values or by increases in ammonium assimilation capacity.  相似文献

The effects of air pollutants on forests around the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland were studied by measurement of the sulphur and calcium content of pine needles and evaluation of the ecological conditions of pine forests. Several parameters for pine trees and their needles were chosen as well as the species composition and condition of epiphytic lichens. Very high pine needle S- and Ca-contents were measured in the vicinity of the Narva and Slantsy plants. In this region both the acid and basic pollutant load is massive, partly neutralizing each other. It is suggested that the total load will, sooner or later, cause unexpected environmental damage. Wide 'lichen desert' areas were detected around Narva and Slantsy. Near the margins of these areas extraordinary epiphytes on pines were observed namely Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th.Fr. and red-coloured green alga Trentepohlia umbrina. They are regarded as indicators of alkaline pollution. The lowest pine needle S- and Ca-contents of the study area were measured in south-eastern Finland. The condition of pine forests and their needles was, however, better on the neighbouring Karelian Isthmus although the species number of epiphytic lichens was very low and the condition of the lichens was poor. It is suggested that these most sensitive indicators of air pollutants are damaged by pollutants from St Petersburg and Narva. Vast virgin forests of the Karelian Isthmus act as pollutant sinks reducing the effect of pollutants on trees. On the Finnish side intensive forest management has been carried on for many decades making forests and trees more sensitive to pollutants.  相似文献

Vase-shaped standard apple trees cv. McIntosh were sprayed with azinphos-methyl at pink, pink and 1st cover and 1st cover only. Residue analyses by gas chromatography revealed detectable residues on foliage until mid summer. At harvest, negligible residue levels were found on the peel and the whole apple. On four trees, fluorescein was sprayed in the same manner as the insecticide and maximum levels of the dye were detected on the outside lower canopy along the row. Minimal concentration of fluorescein was detected on the inner upper canopy away from the direction of the row.  相似文献

Four-year-old, seed-grown trees of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were exposed in open-top chambers to charcoal-filtered air (8 h daily mean 54 microg O(3) m(-3)) over three consecutive summers (1986-1988). In mid-May 1988, before the third season of fumigation and more than 7 months after exposure to ozone the previous summer had terminated, daily rates of transpiration from intact shoots and water loss from excised needles were measured together with the amount of wax on the needle surface. In mid-July, 92 days after the beginning of the third year of exposure, the wettability of needles was assessed by measuring the contact angle of water droplets on the surface of needles. Exposure to 156 microg O(3) m(-3) resulted in a 16% increase in daily transpiration in current year's needles and a 28% increase in 1-year old needles. These effects were associated with slower stomatal closure in response to increasing water deficit in the needles previously exposed to 156 microg m(-3) ozone. The long-lasting nature of such ozone-induced effects could predispose trees to drought and winter desiccation. No significant effects of ozone were found on the amount of wax covering the needle surface, but a marked increase in the wettability of needles exposed to ozone was observed. The far reaching physiological consequences of these effects in the field and the possibility that similar disturbances may contribute to the decline of high-altitude forests of Norway spruce in Europe are discussed.  相似文献
