Variations in number and biomass of benthic bacteria were examined in the surface sediments of a Mediterranean seagrass bed [Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile] in the Gulf of Marconi (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) from 1990 to 1991. The annual dynamics of benthic bacterial density and biomass were compared to changes in elemental (organic C and total N) and biochemical (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates) composition of sediment organic matter, as well as to microphytobenthic biomass, dissolved inorganic nutrients and ATP. Bacterial densities exhibited marked seasonal variations (5.12 to 322.7x108 cells g-1 sediment dry wt) with highest values in late spring. Bacterial standing stocks (15.8 to 882.33 g C g-1 of sediment dry wt) were high. Bacterial biomass did not correlate with organic C, total N or to specific biochemical components, but correlated significantly with chlorophyll a, ATP and porewater phosphate concentrations. There is evidence that benthic bacteria were responding to variations of algal biomass. Bacterial biomass accounted, on average, for 30% of total living carbon (calculated on the basis of the ATP concentrations) and 8.4% of total organic carbon.  相似文献

Short Note
This study was aimed to investigate the role of two exotic bivalves ( Ruditapes philippinarum and Musculista senhousia ) on the trophic enrichment and the nutritional quality of sediments from the Sacca di Goro (northern Adriatic Sea) through manipulative experiments. The concentrations of sedimentary total organic matter, biopolymeric carbon, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and chlorophyll- a were determined through a 64 days-long period. The experimental setup consisted in three replicated treatments ( R. philippinarum , M. senhousia and simply sand), with treatments and time as fixed factors. All the biochemical classes showed wide fluctuation, and significant differences among treatments were detected during the experimental period. Both bivalve species played a role in sediment enrichment process. At the end of the experimental period, proteins represented the main biochemical class of organic compounds in the treatments with bivalves (48.5 and 44.5% of the biopolymeric fraction in the M. senhousia and R. philippinarum treatments, respectively), while in the control treatment they were only 32.7%. The accumulation of proteic nitrogen increased the nutritional quality of the sedimentary organic matter. Moreover, the presence of M. senhousia also enhanced the accumulation of microphytobenthic carbon.  相似文献

Nematode assemblage composition, trophic structure and biodiversity were followed over an annual cycle in a Posidonia oceanica bed of the NW Mediterranean to test the response to temporally changing food availability (sediment organic matter, bacterial and microphytobenthic biomass). The sediment-water interface of the seagrass meadow was characterised by high particulate organic matter concentrations. Also, seagrass sediments had high organic matter content, chloropigment concentrations and bacterial biomass. All organic matter components (i.e. carbohydrates, proteins and lipids) changed temporally, with higher concentrations in winter and spring and lower concentrations in summer; however, overall, large amounts of organic compounds were potentially available for (seagrass) benthic consumers throughout the year. Nematode assemblage in the P. oceanica bed maintained a high genus number (88 genera), and a trophic structure tightly coupled with the composition of the potential food sources. In agreement with the relevance of microphytobenthos, epigrowth-feeder nematodes (2A) represented the dominant trophic guild. The biomass of predator nematodes (2B) was significantly correlated with the biomass of other nematodes. Non-selective deposit feeders (1B) displayed a close relationship with the concentration of proteins, carbohydrates and biopolymeric carbon (i.e. labile organic detritus). Conversely to what was expected, epigrowth feeders were not correlated with chloropigment concentrations, but showed a significant relationship with the number of dividing bacteria, possibly suggesting a trophic plasticity of the 2A feeding guild. The coupling between temporal changes in food sources and temporal variability of the nematode trophic structure was highlighted by a CANOCO analysis, which allowed us to identify and associate, at each sampling time, nematode genera and their feeding habits, with specific environmental variables and food indicators. Furthermore, species diversity (H') and evenness (J) calculated on nematodes identified to the genus level displayed evident temporal changes, also reflected by the index of trophic diversity (ITD). Both structural and functional diversity were coupled with high concentration and highly heterogeneous composition of the food sources (including organic detritus, microphytobenthic algae and bacteria) potentially available to nematodes. These data suggest that temporal changes in quantity and quality of food sources do not only influence nematode dynamics and trophic composition, but also influence nematode structural and functional diversity.  相似文献

Net primary productivity and organic matter flow of a mangrove-dominated wetland was estimated by following production and detritus dynamics in a tidal pond in north west Hong Kong in 1986–1988 (9.1 ha). Total productivity was 12.47 t dry wt ha–1 yr–1, of which >90% was from emergent macrophytes (the mangroveKandelia candel and the reedPhragmites communis). High turbidity and high summer temperatures probably limited respective production by phytoplankton and benthic macroalgae (dominated byEnteromorpha crinata). Despite the high total productivity, little detritus was exported from the emergent macrophyte stands, due to the low inundation frequency. This created a net water column carbon deficit which was provided for by the high organic matter import (mean = 4.42 g ash free dry wt m–2 d–1) from the incoming water. This same sediment and particulate organic carbon input giving a high accretion rate of 1.7 cm yr–1 was probably also the force behind progressive dis-coupling of emergent macrophyte production from water column consumers. This resulted in a tendency to retain production in the emergent macrophyte stands while the water column community increasingly relied on allochthonous carbon. This shift from a net exporter to a net importer of carbon in landward wetlands is probably characteristic of the transition into nutrient-conservative terrestrial systems.  相似文献

Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the loss of particles from agricultural fields, and the role of suspended particles in carrying pesticides in surface runoff and drainage water. Propiconazole, a widely used fungicide was applied to experimental fields located at Askim, SE-Norway. Samples from surface runoff and drainage water were collected and analyzed for sediment mass, pesticides, particulate and dissolved organic carbon through a whole year. The surface soil and the runoff material were characterized by its particle size distribution, organic carbon content in size fractions and its ability to bind propiconazole. The results show that (1) particle runoff mostly occurred during the rainfall event shortly after harrowing in autumn. The highest particle concentration observed in the surface runoff water was 4600 mg l–1, and in the drainage water 1130 mg l–1; (2) the erosion of surface soil is size selective. The runoff sediment contained finer particle/aggregates rich in organic matter compared to its original surface soil; (3) the distribution coefficient (K d) of propiconazole was significantly higher in the runoff sediment than in the parent soil. According to our calculation, particle-bound propiconazole can represent up to 23% of the total amount of propiconazole in a water sample with a sediment concentration of 7600 mg l–1, which will significantly influence the transport behavior of the pesticide.  相似文献

Bacterial productivity in sandy sediments on reef flats at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef was determined from the rate of incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA. The study was conducted during January 1982 and July 1983. A small diurnal increase occurred in sediments having a dense population of microalgae. Bacterial production was 120 to 370 mg C m-2 d-1 in summer on reef flats, which was equivalent to 30–40% of primary production by benthic microalgae. In winter, rates of primary production by benthic microalgae and secondary production by bacteria were about one-half to one-fifth of those in summer. There was much variation in production, due to patchiness in the distribution of benthic microbes, especially microalgae. Doubling times for the bacteria in surface sediment were 1 to 2 d in summer and 4 to 16 d in winter on the reef flats. These high productivity values for bacteria indicated that a net input of organic matter to the sediment was needed to support the growth of bacteria. Sediment bacteria thus have a very important role in transforming organic matter on the reef flats. Grazing by Holothuria atra depressed both primary production and bacterial production. It was estimated that these holothurians ate about 10 to 40% of bacterial carbon produced each day in summer, and thus have an important role in the carbon cycle. Harpacticoid copepods were numerically important components of the benthic meiofaunal community and probably had a significant impact on bacterial density as grazers.  相似文献

The composition and abundance of bladedwelling meiofauna was determined over a 15 mo period (1983–1984) from a Thalassia testudinum Banks ex König meadow near Egmont Key, Florida, USA. Harpacticoid copepods, copepod nauplii, and nematodes were the most abundant meiofaunal taxa on T. testudinum blades. Temporal patterns in species composition and population life-history stages were determined for harpacticoid copepods, the numerically predominant taxon. Sixteen species or species complexes of harpacticoid copepods were identified. Harpacticus sp., the most abundant harpacticoid, comprised 47.8% of the total copepods collected, and was present throughout the study. Copepodites dominated the population structures of the blade-dwelling harpacticoid species on most collection dates. Ovigerous females and/or copepodites were always present, indicating continuous reproductive activity. Results suggest that epiphytic algae influence meiofaunal abundance on seagrass blades, as densities of most meiofaunal taxa at Egmont Key were positively associated with percent cover of epiphytic algae throughout the study. The majority of significant correlations between meiofaunal density and cover of epiphytic algae involved filamentous algae, although encrusting algae dominated the epiphytic community. It appears that resources provided by epiphytic algae to seagrass meiofauna (additional food, habitat, and/or shelter from predation) may be associated with algal morphology.  相似文献

The benthic response to a plume front was studied in two areas of the northern Adriatic (Mediterranean Sea) differently influenced by the Po River freshwater input. Sediment samples were collected in June 1996 and February 1997 from 12 stations. The adopted sampling strategy was able to identify the front line in real time by satellite images and to locate sampling stations along an inner–outer plume gradient in order to cover the benthic area beneath the river plume, where enhanced biological production was expected, and open-sea sediments not directly influenced by freshwater inputs. Meiofaunal parameters were compared to the physical conditions and to phytodetritus inputs, organic matter accumulation and bacterial secondary production. The sediments of the Adriatic Sea were characterised by high concentrations of phytopigments (0.6 to 13.9 μg g−1 for chlorophyll a and 1.2 to 17.7 μg g−1 for phaeopigments) and biopolymeric organic carbon (0.15 to 3.02 mg g−1). The plume system extended for a large sector of the northern Adriatic. In the northern area, a large and highly dynamic plume area was coupled with a sediment organic matter concentration significantly higher than in open-sea sediments. In the southern sector, where the plume area and the front line did not change markedly during the year, plume–benthic coupling was evident only in the sediments beneath the front, and corresponded to phaeopigment accumulation. Bacterial parameters and secondary production were high and significantly higher in the frontal area than at open-sea stations. Meiofauna density (1342 to 8541 ind. 10 cm−2) did not change either by season or between areas and was significantly correlated with phaeopigments and bacterial secondary production. Meiofauna displayed different responses to plume inputs in the two sampling areas. In the northern sector, meiofauna density was coupled with organic matter distribution and displayed highest values beneath the plume. In the southern sector, the densities of copepods, turbellarians and kinorhynchs displayed highest values under the front in summer, and the same applied to total meiofauna density in winter. Juvenile decapods and copepod nauplii significantly increased their densities in sediments beneath the front. Data presented in the present study suggest that plume inputs and frontal systems, enhancing phytodetritus accumulation and benthic bacterial response, might influence density, composition and distribution of meiofaunal assemblages. As river plumes are highly variable systems affecting the trophic characteristics of the sediments underneath, their dynamics should be considered when analysing mesoscale spatial changes of meiofaunal assemblages. Particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) were analyzed during cruises undertaken in September 1985 and April 1986 along the Namibian upwelling system. The main objectives were to provide estimates of standing stocks of particulate organic matter (POM) and analyze its temporal and spatial variability. Average estimates of total carbon standing stock (0 to 100 m depth) accounted for 1.2 g-at C m–2 during active and 1.32 g-at C m–2 during abated upwelling. Zooplankton carbon was estimated as 0.22 and 0.27 g-at C m–2, respectively, for both periods. POM was generally concentrated near the surface, especially during abated upwelling. During abated upwelling, POM was not only abundant inshore but also over the shelf, as a response of a more diffuse frontal system and a more strongly stratified water column. Cross-shelf gradients were more significant during active upwelling, while alongshore gradients accounted for most of the variance of particulate organic matter during abated periods. This result was a consequence of the seasonal intrusion of warm, Angolan water from the north during the period of minimum upwelling, and resulted in poorer POM concentrations and higher consumer: producer ratios (24.4%). Nevertheless, this last conclusion should be regarded with caution due to the lack of comparative interannual variability. A 48 h study at a fixed station permitted analysis of the daily variability in POM during the intrusion process. Changes in the thickness of the surface mixed layer due to irregular time-spaced pulses of non-homogeneous water masses resulted in sudden enrichments and renewals of phytoplankton and zooplankton populations in a matter of hours.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal changes in the biochemical composition of particulate organic matter in a semi-enclosed marine system (Stagnone di Marsala, Mediterranean Sea) were studied, on a monthly basis, from January to December 1994, in order to assess nutritional value of suspended particles for benthic suspension feeders. According to previous findings, the study site displayed a strong oligotrophy. Chlorophyll-a accounted for a very low fraction of the total suspended matter pool (0.1%), whereas at least 75% of POC was of detrital/heterotrophic origin. POC: PON ratio values indicate that bacterioplankton biomass accounted for a significant fraction of the total POC pool, displaying values comparable to those of the phytoplankton biomass (phytoplankton to bacterial biomass ratio was about (1). Temporal and spatial changes in the biochemical composition of particulate organic matter were rather limited and related to its sources, the main of which is represented by detrital particles released by the Posidonia oceanica (L.) beds. the comparison between our results and those encountered in other coastal lagoons indicates that the low abundance of suspension-feeding organisms observed in the study area is related to the “quality depression” of particles due to the dilution of high quality compounds (i.e., biopolymeric carbon) in a largely inorganic matrix. This result leads us to conclude that, to reach the same amount of high quality particulate food, a suspension feeder mollusc in the Marsala lagoon would need to filter a sea water volume around 3 times higher than in other Mediterranean coastal lagoons.  相似文献

Strings of moored sediment traps were deployed in a 150 m water column over a period covering the growth and collapse of the spring bloom (4 April–3 June 1976) in an area of the northern North Sea. The efficiency of collection of material in the moored traps was compared to collections in free-drifting traps in the same area of deployment. The ways in which the data from the trap collections may be interpreted was considered at some length and a best estimate of the flux of organic carbon and nitrogen to the sediment was made. For the period prior to the spring bloom (4–23 April) this flux was 50 mg C m–2 d–1 (about 20% of primary production). During the bloom (24 April–19 May) it was about 185 mg C m–2 d–1 (35% of production) and during early summer (20 May–3 June) it was 115 mg C m–2 d–1, about 25% of the overlying production. The organic carbon and nitrogen content of the material collected was measured and the material was examined microscopically. There was evidence of a large settlement of diatoms immediately after the spring bloom which was reflected in changes in the C:N and C:chlorophyll ratios of the material collected. This change in biochemical composition of the material may affect its nutritional quality and have a stimulatory effect on the growth and reproduction of the animals living in the sediment.  相似文献

This study examines the role of the organic carbon content of sediment in aromatic hydrocarbon bioaccumulation and assesses the importance of two routes of hydrocarbon uptake: (1) the uptake of the particulate contaminant fraction from ingested sediment; (2) the uptake of the dissolved contaminant fraction from interstitial or overlying water. The lugwormAbarenicola pacifica was collected from San Juan Island, Washington, USA, in January 1989, and exposed to three sediments contaminated with [3H]benzo (a) pyrene (BaP). By manipulating the organic content of these sediments, it was possible to establish three treatments with similar BaP concentrations in the interstitial water, but differing in the amount of BaP in the bulk sediment. BaP bioaccumulation over the first few days of exposure was correlated with feeding rate, suggesting that ingested sediments were a source of BaP. The greatest body burden, however, was attained in those individuals held in sediments with the lowest organic carbon content and the lowest BaP concentration. Body burden at steady state was not correlated with either BaP concentrations in bulk sediment (dry weight or organic carbon-normalized bases) or the interstitial water. Increased organic matter decreased BaP bioavailability in a non-linear fashion. Bioaccumulation factors relative to water and organic content were relatively constant between 1 and 2% organic carbon in the sediment, but these same accumulation factors substantially underestimated body burden if applied to sandy sediments with little (0.3%) organic carbon.  相似文献

This paper reports the fluvial fluxes and estuarine transport of organic carbon and nutrients from a tropical river (Tsengwen River), southwestern Taiwan. Riverine fluxes of organic carbon and nutrients were highly variable temporally, due primarily to temporal variations in river discharge and suspended load. The sediment yield of the drainage basin during the study period (1995–1996, 616 tonne km–2 year–1) was ca. 15 times lower than that of the long-term (1960–1998) average (9379 tonne km2 year–1), resulting mainly from the damming effect and historically low record of river water discharge (5.02 m3 s–1) in 1995. The flushing time of river water in the estuary varied from 5 months in the dry season to >4.5 days in the wet season and about 1 day in the flood period. Consequently, distributions of nutrients, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) were of highly seasonal variability in the estuary. Nutrients and POC behaved nonconservatively but DOC behaved conservatively in the estuary. DOC fluxes were generally greater than POC fluxes with the exception that POC fluxes considerably exceeded DOC fluxes during the flood period. Degradation of DOC and POC within the span of flushing time was insignificant and may contribute little amount of CO2 to the estuary during the wet season and flood period. Net estuarine fluxes of nutrients were determined by riverine fluxes and estuarine removals (or additions) of nutrients. The magnitude of estuarine removal or addition for a nutrient was also seasonally variable, and these processes must be considered for net flux estimates from the river to the sea. As a result, nonconservative fluxes of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) from the estuary are –0.002, –0.09 and –0.59 mmol m–2 day–1, respectively, for dry season, wet season and flood period, indicating internal sinks of DIP during all seasons. Due to high turbidity and short flushing time of estuarine water, DIP in the flood period may be derived largely from geochemical processes rather than biological removal, and this DIP should not be included in an annual estimate of carbon budget. The internal sink of phosphorus corresponds to a net organic carbon production (photosynthesis–respiration, p–r) during dry (0.21 mmol m–2 day–1) and wet (9.5 mmol m–2 day–1) seasons. The magnitude of net production (p–r) is 1.5 mol m–2 year–1, indicating that the estuary is autotrophic in 1995. However, there is a net nitrogen loss (nitrogen fixation–denitrification < 0) in 1995, but the magnitude is small (–0.17 mol m–2 year–1).  相似文献

Bacterial abundance, production, and extracellular enzyme activity were determined in the shallow water column, in the epiphytic community of Thalassia testudinum, and at the sediment surface along with total carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in Florida Bay, a subtropical seagrass estuary. Data were statistically reduced by principle components analysis (PCA) and multidimensional scaling and related to T. testudinum leaf total phosphorus content and phytoplankton biomass. Each zone (i.e., pelagic, epiphytic, and surface sediment community) was significantly dissimilar to each other (Global R = 0.65). Pelagic aminopeptidase and sum of carbon hydrolytic enzyme (esterase, peptidase, and α- and β-glucosidase) activities ranged from 8 to 284 mg N m−2 day−1 and 113–1,671 mg C m−2 day−1, respectively, and were 1–3 orders of magnitude higher than epiphytic and sediment surface activities. Due to the phosphorus-limited nature of Florida Bay, alkaline phosphatase activity was similar between pelagic (51–710 mg P m−2 day−1) and sediment (77–224 mg P m−2 day−1) zones but lower in the epiphytes (1.1–5.2 mg P m−2 day−1). Total (and/or organic) C (111–311 g C m−2), N (9.4–27.2 g N m−2), and P (212–1,623 mg P m−2) content were the highest in the sediment surface and typically the lowest in the seagrass epiphytes, ranging from 0.6 to 8.7 g C m−2, 0.02–0.99 g N m−2, and 0.5–43.5 mg P m−2. Unlike nutrient content and enzyme activities, bacterial production was highest in the epiphytes (8.0–235.1 mg C m−2 day−1) and sediment surface (11.5–233.2 mg C m−2 day−1) and low in the water column (1.6–85.6 mg C m−2 day−1). At an assumed 50% bacterial growth efficiency, for example, extracellular enzyme hydrolysis could supply 1.8 and 69% of epiphytic and sediment bacteria carbon demand, respectively, while pelagic bacteria could fulfill their carbon demand completely by enzyme-hydrolyzable organic matter. Similarly, previously measured T. testudinum extracellular photosynthetic carbon exudation rates could not satisfy epiphytic and sediment surface bacterial carbon demand, suggesting that epiphytic algae and microphytobenthos might provide usable substrates to support high benthic bacterial production rates. PCA revealed that T. testudinum nutrient content was related positively to epiphytic nutrient content and carbon hydrolase activity in the sediment, but unrelated to pelagic variables. Phytoplankton biomass correlated positively with all pelagic components and sediment aminopeptidase activity but negatively with epiphytic alkaline phosphatase activity. In conclusion, seagrass production and nutrient content was unrelated to pelagic bacteria activity, but did influence extracellular enzyme hydrolysis at the sediment surface and in the epiphytes. This study suggests that seagrass-derived organic matter is of secondary importance in Florida Bay and that bacteria rely primarily on algal/cyanobacteria production. Pelagic bacteria seem coupled to phytoplankton, while the benthic community appears supported by epiphytic and/or microphytobenthos production.  相似文献

Large areas of mangroves in India are heavily disturbed by cattle grazing, hypersalinity, and other human-induced impacts. In two disturbed Avicennia marina forests and two undisturbed A. marina and Rhizophora apiculata forests in the Pichavaram mangroves of the Vellar–Coleroon estuarine complex, southeast India, we measured the rates and pathways of microbial decomposition of soil organic matter to determine if human impact is altering biogeochemical activity within these stands. Rates of total carbon oxidation (TCOX) were higher in the undisturbed A. marina forest (mean 199 mol C m–2 year–1) than in the two impacted stands (43 and 79 mol C m–2 year–1); rates of total carbon oxidation in the R. apiculata forest averaged 75 mol C m–2 year–1. Sulphate reduction (range 21–319 mmol S m–2 day–1) was the major decomposition pathway (65–85% of TCOX), except at the most disturbed forest (30% of TCOX). Rates of sulphate reduction at all sites peaked in sub-surface soils to a depth of about 1 m, leading to little carbon burial (3–5% of total C input). There was some evidence of measurable iron and manganese reduction in association with tree roots. Rates of microbial activity were rapid in comparison with rates measured in other mangrove soils, reflecting high rates of phytoplankton production and organic matter retention in this lagoon. Human-induced disturbance creates a sharp zonation of dry, hypersaline soil overlying less saline, wetter soil, suppressing surface microbial and root growth. We conclude that this vertical alteration of soil characteristics and biogeochemistry shifts the cycling of nutrients between trees and microbes to a disequilibrium state, partly explaining why mangroves are stunted in these declining forests.Communicated by G. The Tuy River basin, located in north-central Venezuela with an annual average temperature of 27°C and precipitation of 140 cm, was selected to conduct a geochemical study of bottom sediments, with the object of establishing the natural and human influences in the abundance and distribution of Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and organic carbon. The basin is lithologically divided into two sub-basins, north and south. The north sub-basin drains a iow-grade metasedimentary terrain with a population density of 800 persons km–2 and approximateiy 600 industrial sites, while the south sub-basin in underlain by metavolcanic and ultramafic rocks, with a population density of less than 10 persons km–2.Stream bottom sediment samples (150) were collected during the years of 1979–1986 in 16 unpolluted sites and 13 polluted sites. The sediments were air dried at room temperature and sieved through a 120 stainless steel mesh (125 m). Samples of grain size smaller than 125 m were analysed, the heavy metals being determined by atomic absorption spectrometry and the organic carbon (Corg) by dry combustion. The higher concentrations of heavy metals and organic carbon found in the pristine areas were in the south sub-basin, especially in those areas with higher annual precipitation and tropical forest. This indicated that the metavolcanic and ultramafic rocks yield higher concentrations of heavy metals than the metasedimentary rocks. It was also noted that the higher concentrations of Cr and Ni are associated with the ultramafic rocks. The results obtained from the sediment samples collected in the polluted sites showed that the elements Pb, Zn and Corg are enriched up to 4 times as a result of ail the human activities taking place in the basin. Organic carbon is an excellent indicator of domestic wastewater, Pb and Zn are good indicators of the automotive traffic and industrial effluents. The concentrations of each heavy metal did not show any significant correlation with grain size fractions; however, the concentration of organic carbon did show a negative correlation with grain size. The lithological, climatic and vegetation influence in the abundance of heavy metals and organic carbon in stream sediments clearly indicates the necessity of establishing background levels for the area under study when carrying out studies in environmental geochemistry.  相似文献

Intertidal zonation and seasonality of tropical meiobenthic communities were examined within five mangrove estuaries along the northeastern coast (Cape York peninsula) of Australia from May 1985 to January 1986. Partial correlation analysis revealed that environmental cues such as temperature and sediment granulometry were the most important factors regulating the zonation patterns of meiofauna. Seasonality was greatly influenced by monsoonal rains. During austral summer, prolonged monsoonal rains occurred along the coast north of 18°S latitude (Hinchinbrook Island), resulting in increased river discharge and scouring of surface silts and clays, organic matter and bacteria from most tidal sediments. Despite scouring, meiofaunal densities increased in the summer wet season, probably due to warmer temperatures and the high resilience of meiobenthos to sediment disturbance. In mangrove sediments not subjected to torrential rains (Hinchinbrook Island), meiofaunal densities were highest in austral autumn and winter (sediment temperature: 23 to 27°C) and lowest in austral spring and summer (28° to 40°C). Turbellarians were the dominant meiofaunal group, accounting for 58 to 67% of total faunal densities which generally decreased with elevation in all of the estuaries. Meiofauna in tropical Australian mangroves, as in other organic-rich muds and in coral reefs, appear to exert little impact on microbial standing stocks when intercorrelated variables are accounted for. The abundances of hard-bodied meiofauna were low compared with temperate communities, lending further support to Moore's (1972) contention that tropical intertidal communities are subjected to greater physical stress than their temperate counterparts.  相似文献

The present study tested the utilization of dead microbial biomass by two benthic deposit-feeders:Abra alba (Wood) (Mollusca: Bivalvia) andEupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu) (Annelida: Polychaeta). Clams were collected in the Canet lagoon during spring 1989. Worms were collected in the Port-Vendres harbour during spring 1989. The14C-labelled (glutamic acid, 24 h) sediment used during the study was sterilized with 1% chloroform, washed with sterile seawater, and dried (60°C; 48 h). This sterilisation procedure, called fumigation is the least harmful to the sediment (Novitsky 1986). Both clams and worms were incubated in the presence of the fumigated sediment for 5, 10, 20, and 50 h. At the end of each experiment we recorded the radioactivity in four compartments: (1) sediment, (2) dissolved organic matter (DOM), (3) CO2, and (4) animals. The radioactivity of the sediment was subdivided into five fractions: (i) soluble in 2N HCl, (ii) soluble in hot 5% trichloroacetic acid (TCA), (iii) soluble in 1N NaOH, (iv) soluble in hot 6N HCl, (v) residual (after combustion in a Leco carbon analyser). In the first set of experiments, after 20 h of incubation, 5.4 and 4.7% of the total radioactivity was taken up by clams and worms, respectively. However, a model revealed that this uptake could have been correlated with the release of radiolabelled DOM (33% of total radioactivity during the first 5 h). In order to test this assumption, we used the same protocol with three additional washes of the fumigated sediment. This resulted in a significantly lower uptake by the clams (1.9% of the total radioactivity byt = 50 h), whereas the worms exhibited an uptake similar to that in the initial experiment (5.1% of total radioactivity byt = 50 h). These results underline the importance of considering interactions with DOM when applying radiotracer techniques to the study of benthic food chains. The average ingestion rates of fumigated sediment byA. alba andE. nebulosa were 5.2 10–2 mg sediment dry wt mg–1 clam h–1 and 3.5 10–2 mg sediment dry wt mg–1 worm h–1, respectively, which is comparable to previous data reported for other deposit-feeding bivalves and polychaetes feeding on natural sediment or detritus. The low radioactivity recorded for CO2 together with the similarity of the changes in the partitioning of the radioactivity within the sediment between control experiments and experiments carried out in the presence of clams or worms suggest low assimilation efficiencies. Therefore, the present study supports the fact that dead microbial biomass does not constitute an important food source for benthic deposit-feeders.  相似文献
