Spermatozoa and some stages of spermatogenesis were studied for four species of aplousobranch ascidians. Spermatozoa of Clavelina lepadiformis (Müller) (family Clavelinidae) are plesiomorphous in that they have apical acrosomal vesicles and a moderately elongated, cylindrical nucleus. The elongated mitochondrion is twisted ea. 11/2 times around the nucleus. In their ultrastructural morphology, C. lepadiformis sperm conform in some respects to the least-derived ascidian sperm, those of the phlebobranch ascidian Ciona intestinalis L.; however, the sperm of Clavelina lepadiformis have two apomorphies not shared with those of Ciona sp.: (1) the mitochondrion of Clavelina lepadiformis is long and spiralled along the entire nucleus rather than being comparatively compact and not at all helical; (2) the mitochondrial cristae are elongated parallel to the long axis of the nucleus, whereas in Ciona sp. sperm the cristae are unmodified. In Distaplia sp., Aplidium sp. and Synoicum pulmonaria (Ellis and Solander) the spermatozoa are more derived and consist of a proximal cylindrical and a distal corkscrew-like part. The mitochondrion in Distaplia sp. and Aplidium sp. contains electron-dense material and extends in a long thread around the nucleus. In S. pulmonaria the mitochondrion surrounds the anterior part of the nucleus in mature spermatozoa, and an elongated, dense structure displaying fine striation is enclosed in the mitochondrion in late spermatids. The sperm ultrastructural morphology observed in this study is consistent with the majority view that clavelinids are closest to the ancestral ascidian but is also consistent with other conclusions, particularly that the Cionidae are closest to the stem ascidian.  相似文献

Phaeocystis antarctica Karsten exhibits optical changes in pigment packaging during acclimation to drastically different light levels. Here, the three-dimensional morphological rearrangements are shown for two light conditions mimicking limiting and saturating conditions for photosynthesis. Cultures of P. antarctica were grown semi-continuously under light-limiting conditions for growth (14 μmol quanta m−2 s−1) and a light-saturating condition (259 μmol quanta m−2 s−1) for growth. Increased numbers of thylakoids were observed under the low light treatment. In contrast, there were less amounts of thylakoid stacking in each chloroplast under the high light treatment. Electron microscopic tomographic reconstructions illustrate the complexity of the chloroplast organelle where the thylakoids ‘interact’ with the pyrenoid and the chloroplast membrane. Highly complex characteristics, such as bi- and tri-furcations in the thylakoid stacks, were continuous throughout the chloroplast. Other organelles, such as the Golgi apparatus and dense vesicles that may potentially affect cellular scattering and absorption were also observed in both high and low light. These three dimensional thylakoid arrangements have profound implications for cellular photophysiology. They represent a new view of algal chloroplast structure, and provide a starting point for more accurate optical modeling studies.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

In order to better understand the structure of bivalve peribuccal organs and relate this to existing functional paradigms of their role in feeding, the labial palps of two scallop species,Placopecten magellanicus from the Bay of Fundy, Canada (1985 and 1986), andChlamys varia from the Bay of Brest, France (1986), were examined using histological techniques and electron microscopy. The ridged palp surface displays a uniformly dense ciliation with relatively few mucocytes; these are essentially concentrated in the region of the secondary ledge and may, through their secretory activity, determine the fate of particle masses in this area. The mucus secretions of the ridged palp surface are qualitatively different from those of the smooth palp surface. Mucocytes are much more abundant on the smooth palp surface, where it is suggested that their homogeneous secretions attenuate the potentially adverse effects of anteriorly-directed cleansing and swimming currents. Two other cell types are found in the palp epithelia: ciliated cells, which are very numerous on the ridged surface and relatively rare on the smooth surface, and non-ciliated epithelial cells, which are very numerous on the smooth surface and rare on the ridged surface, where they are confined to the palp margin. In addition to the mechanical role of the ciliated cells and mucocytes, the ultrastructural characteristics of the ciliated and non-ciliated epithelial cells indicate a dichotomy of function between the ridged and smooth surfaces. The ridged surface epithelial cells present an ultrastructural specialization in the absorption of dissolved and colloidal matter, suggesting an accessory nutritive role, whereas the smooth surface simple epithelial cells show signs of active molecular synthesis. No specialised sensory cells were observed on the ridged surface; it is therefore not yet possible to conclude whether the labial palps are capable of selection based on individual particle characteristics.  相似文献

Two modal diploid numbers of chromosomes were found for Pterotraches hippocampus Philippi (Mollusca: Mesogastropoda) collected from the Gulf of Palermo in 1990: 2n=31 and 32 for males and females, respectively. This, along with other karyological characteristics such as the occurrence of a trivalent configuration at diakinesis and two types of metaphase-II spreads in spermatocytes, supports the notion that a X1X2Y/X1X1X2X2 sex mechanism operates in the species investigated here. Silver nitrate procedure revealed an intraindividual variation in the Ag-staining pattern occurring in this species. The majority of the chromosome pair displayed terminal and/or interstitial heterochromatic blocks after C-banding.  相似文献

The distribution of metals (Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn) in the blood plasma and the circulating hemocytes was determined for a eulamellibranch bivalve, the quahog Mercenaria mercenaria (L.), collected from a relatively clean site at Falmouth, Massachusetts, USA. Whole blood volume was an exponential function of quahog length (Y=5.71×10-5 X3.0678; Y=ml of whole blood; X=mm length). Of this volume, 1.2±0.3% ( ) was attributable to blood cells. Total metal content (g metal, or g metal normalized per g of whole blood) was much higher in blood plasma than in hemocytes. In quahogs exposed in the laboratory to 100 ppb 109Cd, 93.0% of the total accumulated blood Cd was in the plasma rather than in the circulating hemocytes (7.0%), irrespective of the length of exposure (1 h to 31 d). Less than 5% of the plasma Cd was either Cd2+, small inorganic Cd complexes or bound to organic molecules with a molecular weight smaller than 1 000. Cadmium was primarily bound to high molecular weight protein(s) (>60 000 daltons) within the plasma. This plasma protein-Cd complex has a low affinity constant (approximately 104 M -1), indicating non-specific Cd binding, although the capacity for Cd-binding in the plasma is great (as high as 200 g Cd per ml of plasma). Blood plasma may be far more important in metal transport than has previously been realized.  相似文献

The life history of Capitella capitata (Fabricius), occurring in Amakusa, South Japan, was studied in detail through field investigations and laboratory experiments. The important life-history characteristics of this species in the present study area are described and compared with those reported in previous studies from various geographic regions. Though some life-history characteristics (extended breeding season throughout almost the whole year, parental brooding habit, and early maturation) are common to all localities, the reproductive mode, larval developmental pattern and morphology are very distinct among the worms from various localities. C. capitata showing these considerable geographical variations should not be treated as a single species. It is suggested that C. capitata, originally defined on the basis of morphological features of adult worms, needs to be subdivided into several species, subspecies, or biological races.  相似文献

The mouthparts of Munida sarsi Huus, 1935, including the labrum and paragnaths, are described using LM and SEM, with special attention to the setal composition and its function. We also used high-resolution macrovideo equipment to record the feeding processes and monitor setae in action. This combination of morphological and preliminary behavioral data enabled us to arrive at a more comprehensive understanding of the functional morphology. M. sarsi was found to be an opportunist and capable of handling and eating most kinds of animal tissue. The species can also be a selective deposit feeder, sorting the sediment by quality and not by size. This sorting is performed by the setae on the medial rim of the bases of maxilla 1, maxilla 2 and maxilliped 1. Many of the other mouthpart functions ranging from food detection to ingestion are mapped with comparison to what has been found for other anomurans. Grooming was shown to be a significant function of many mouthparts, especially the endopod of maxilliped 3. In general the mouthparts closest to the mouth have the least complex movements and functional scheme, with the mandibles being able to perform only one movement, i.e. cutting or crunching food objects. Some functions are attributed to the paragnath, the endopod of maxilla 2 and the epipod of maxilliped 1. Received: 3 October 1999 / Accepted: 22 March 2000  相似文献

Mechanistic studies on herbivore functional responses have largely taken place in mammals; very little has been done in herbivorous birds so far. Here we aim to fill that gap by experimentally quantifying the (short-term) functional response of a large avian herbivore, the Bewick's Swan (Cygnus columbianus bewickii). We explicitly distinguish between encounter-limited and handling-limited foraging by analyzing the results in the framework of the models of D. E. Spalinger and N. T. Hobbs, originally developed for mammalian herbivory. Bite size in captive swans was experimentally manipulated by varying sward height. The time interval between two bites increased with bite size, which supports the handling-limited model (process 3) and rejects the encounter-limited models (processes 1 and 2). Subsequently, we took the obtained functional response parameters into the field in order to predict, from measurements of sward height, (1) bite sizes, (2) handling times, and (3) short-term intake rates in free-ranging swans. Indeed, for all three variables, the observed values closely matched the experimentally based predictions. Finally, we review functional response parameters available in the literature on avian herbivores and scale them allometrically in relation to mammals. This analysis revealed that maximum bite sizes, and therefore maximum intake rates, in herbivorous birds are smaller than in herbivorous mammals. We hypothesize and provide evidence that birds compensate by longer daily foraging times.  相似文献

The upper critical thermal limits were measured as heat-coma temperatures in Littorina species as a tool for examining physiological diversity. Thermal tolerance was found to be stable within a population, but extensive variation occurred between populations and species. All species examined displayed heat-coma values of ∼30 °C and did not show a positive correlation with shore height. Eulittoral-fringe species tended to have higher coma temperatures than eulittoral species. Coma temperatures varied both seasonally and geographically. Lethal thermal limits were also investigated; these were ∼10 C° higher than coma temperatures. Received: 16 August 1999 / Accepted: 13 June 2000  相似文献

The sperm of Acanthodoris pilosa were examined in fresh preparations, histochemically stained samples, electronmicroscope sections, and in paraffin sections of the whole reproductive mass. Sperm are morphologically the same in the ampulla (vas deferens) and the spermatotheca and spermatocyst (bursae for sperm received during copulation). The electron micrographs show sperm with a long spiralled, fibrous, nuclear head with non-fibrous tongue-like acrosome. The tail, attached directly to the posterior of the head, has a 9+2 filamentous arrangement surrounded by a spiralled sheath which contains mitochondria and granular thread running the length of the tail. The thin-walled ampulla contains non-motile sperm and no energy sources such as polysaccharides and lipids. The bursae hold motile sperm and, with histochemical stains, were shown to contain polysaccharide droplets in walls and lumen. The lack of self-fertilization in nudibranchs appears to be associated with a physiological immaturity of the sperm in the hermaphroditic duct, where egg and sperm meet as they leave the ovotestis.  相似文献

Analysis of subcellular fractions revealed a complement of microsomal electron transport components including reductases and heme proteins in several organs of the three bivalve species Mytilus edulis, Macrocallista maculata and Area zebra. Dithionite difference spectroscopy of CO-treated microsomes yielded spectra typical of cytochrome P-450 in digestive gland and gill, with absorption maxima at 450 nm. A time-dependent reduction of cytochrome P-450 was also observed. The levels of these components and rates of microsomal benzo[a]pyrene (BP) metabolism were highest in the digestive gland, and were very similar between species. In M. edulis there was a suggested seasonal variation in BP metabolism but no population differences in this activity or in levels of other components. Digestive gland microsomal metabolites of BP identified by HPLC retention and UV spectroscopy included BP-1.6-quinone, BP-3,6-quinone and BP-6,12-quinone, which comprised 65% of the total metabolites, and dihydrodiols and phenols, the latter products consistent with cytochrome P-450 monooxygenation and expoxide hydrolase function. However, the inconsistent dependence of BP metabolism on NADPH, and inconsistent inhibition by CO suggest that catalyst(s) additional to cytochrome P-450 may be acting in BP metabolism. Based on these results and the prominent quinone formation, we speculate that peroxidative mechanism(s) may be involved. The role of peroxidative as well as well as monooxygenase reactions in the in-vivo disposition and effects of foreign chemicals in bivalves, and also the major function of cytochrome P-450 in these bivalves, remain to be established. Some of these results have appeared in preliminary form; J. Observations on mating, egg-laying and hatching of aquarium-held individuals of Octopus tetricus Gould, 1852 are described. Females were able to store viable spermatozoa for periods up to 114 days, and laid many small eggs in strings 10 to 12 cm long. The duration of embryonic development varied inversely with temperature. The newly hatched planktonic larvae were 2.5 mm long by 1.1 mm wide, but attempts to rear them were unsuccessful, the longest survival being 21 days. The females died following egg hatching.  相似文献

The sperm kinetics and fertilisation literature in marine invertebrates is heavily biased toward free-spawning species. Nonetheless, many species (e.g. cephalopods) transfer and/or fertilise gametes in confined external spaces or internally, creating very different selective pressures on sperm storage, sperm longevity and hence sperm competition. Here we report the results of an investigation into the effects of sperm age, water temperature and sperm concentration on sperm motility in the giant cuttlefish (Sepia apama). Significant positive correlations were found between percent motility and sperm concentration, and between sperm motile speed and sperm concentration. Mean percent motility of cuttlefish sperm suspension was still 9% eight hours after being released from the spermatophore and diluted into filtered seawater at 12°C (ambient field temperature during the spawning season). Sperm resuspended from spermatangia taken from (mated) females in the field were motile for up to 100 hours. When spermatophores were stored at 4°C motility was still observed in resuspended sperm after two months. Our results show that spermatangia and spermatophores can retain and release live sperm for long periods. The observed longevity of sperm in S. apama greatly increases the potential for sperm competition in this species.  相似文献

Sequential alternation of extracellular digestion in the stomach and intracellular digestion in the diverticula appears widespread among bivalves. The present study documents some physiological consequences of such processes in Mytilus edulis L. collected during 1981 from Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, England. Pronounced temporal fluctuations in faecal deposition are described that relate, in terms of amplitude and period, to both sinusoidal rhythmicity established for ammonia excretion and changes in the morphology of digestive tubules. Although at least partially synchronised among replicate groups of mussels, these cycles bore no consistent relationship with exogenous influences. Hourly fluctuation in the net absorption efficiency for nitrogen, as evidenced by the mean percentage ±2 SE, measured over 24 h sampling periods, was considerable (16.0±53.7, 49.3±10.9 and 52.8±6.6 for mussels acclimated in March, June and October, respectively). This variation in absorption derived from an inverse relationship between the percentage nitrogen within faeces and the rate of faecal egestion. Accordingly, peaks of faecal deposition presumably represented the pulsed remnants of intracellular digestion. Co-ordinated rhythms of digestion, absorption and excretion were thus evident in M. edulis. These processes displayed seasonally dependent periodicities of approximately 8, 3 and 4 h in March, June and October, respectively. It was concluded that, at least for M. edulis, this previously unquantified rhythmicity of physiological processes warrants careful consideration during assays commonly undertaken in the complication of nutrient and energy budgets.  相似文献

Stone provisioning is a nest-maintenance activity accomplished by pygoscelid penguins after reliefs during the incubation/brooding period. The functional significance of this behaviour has been mainly explained as a parental strategy preventing nest flooding under detrimental weather conditions. In addition, and in the light of recent studies, this behaviour could also fit into the sexual selection process. In this study, we tested the first idea, that is, whether stone provisioning is a nest-maintenance behaviour to increase egg/nestling survival by lowering the risk of nest flooding, and can thus be considered a form of parental care. Additionally, we investigated if the effort invested by parents in nest maintenance is constrained by physiologically limiting resources. The effort of stone collection and the perceived risk of nest flooding were experimentally manipulated during the incubation and early brooding phases in a chinstrap penguin, Pygoscelis antarctica, colony. Three groups of nests were established. After weighing, control nests were left unmanipulated. In a second group of nests (reduced group), only one-half of the initial weight of stones was returned to the nests. In a third group of nests (snow-added group), we both reduced nest weight by a half and added snow outside the nest bowl over 6 consecutive days. Ten days after manipulation, the difference in nest weight between initial and final conditions was significantly related to treatment: penguins increased stone provisioning in the reduced group (44% of half-reduced nests), but drastically more in the reduced and snow-added group (123% of half-reduced nests), while the weight of control nests was unchanged compared to premanipulation conditions. The intensity of stone provisioning was affected by nest date, peaking about hatching time and shortly after, and declining with advancing chick age. These results suggest that stone provisioning is a mechanism that has evolved to prevent egg or chick mortality by nest flooding. The haematocrit, but not leukocyte numbers as expressed by the buffy coat layer, varied with the experimental conditions. Penguins investing more time in nest maintenance had a lower haematocrit, suggesting a physiological trade-off probably mediated by competition between the time devoted to nest maintenance versus foraging activities. The amount of stones collected and the haematocrit were positively related to the number of neighbour nests, so those individuals surrounded by more nests seemed to obtain benefits in the availability of nest material and energy savings. This study indicates that stone-provisioning behaviour is a nest-maintenance activity evolved to improve thermal nest characteristics potentially increasing offspring survival, and competing in time and energy with other reproductive activities. Stone provisioning in penguins should therefore be regarded as a form of parental care and an important part of individual reproductive effort in species breeding in harsh environments. Furthermore, nest size and nest-maintenance effort should be considered reproductive traits indicative of parental quality and thus could also be involved in the post-mating sexual selection process.  相似文献

Felimare californiensis (=Hypselodoris californiensis) was once common throughout the Southern California Bight (SCB) and California Channel Islands. This well-known shallow-water nudibranch, which specializes on dysideid sponges, has persisted for decades in Mexico, but in California disappeared from its entire range by 1984. Since reappearing in 2003, it has been found only at Santa Catalina Island, plus sightings of single individuals in 2011 at Santa Cruz Island and San Diego. The decline of F. californiensis in California was documented using published historical records, museum collections, unpublished field accounts, and images posted online. The loss of this emblematic species is unique among Californian nudibranchs, including (1) its congener Felimare porterae (=Mexichromis porterae), with which it appears to overlap in diet, and (2) opisthobranch species with similar historical geographic ranges and mode of development. The decline in F. californiensis is not predicted by warming trends and climate variation over the past 40 years, including the strong El Niño events of 1983 and 1998. Coastal pollution from the large human population in southern California may have impacted Dysidea amblia, the primary reported prey of F. californiensis. Historical overcollecting of the nudibranch and habitat loss through the development of major ports likely also contributed to its decline. Sightings since 2003 are consistent with a nascent recovery, as elements of water quality have improved in the SCB in recent decades.  相似文献

Differential uptake of [3H]adenine and [3H]thymidine, and incorporation of tritium label into proteins, RNA and DNA as a function of depth, indicate that surface microplankton incorporated most of the assimilated radioisotopes into nucleic acids. Growth processes for deep-sea microplankton were shifted towards higher rates of [3H]-adenine incorporation into RNA compared to rates of thymidine incorporation into DNA. Deep-sea microplankton also diverted a larger portion (up to 80%) of the assimilated tritium into biosynthetic pathways for amino acid and eventual incorporation into proteins. These results imply that protein synthesis is vital for deep-sea microplankton where populations may be stressed by low levels of available nutrients. The rates at which microplankton incorporated [3H]adenine into RNA and DNA, and [3H]thymidine into DNA, suggest that oceanic microplankton are in a transient state of balanced growth, i.e. between two steady-state growth conditions, irrespective of potential growth rates. Our results support the hypothesis that oceanic microplankton are in various growth states.  相似文献

The enzymes Acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and Lactatedehydrogenase (LDH) are used as biological markers in the present study. Enzymes are highly sensitive and used to evaluate the biological effects of organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos in freshwater mussel Lamellidens marginalis. The test organisms were exposed to sub-lethal concentration (5 ppm) of chlorpyrifos for 30 days and allowed to recover for seven days. A distinct reduction of the enzyme AchE (34 +/- 3.3 U l(-1)) was found in the treated hepatopancreas. A significant increase in LDH activity in gill, hepatopancreas and muscle was observed. There was a significant recovery in AchE and LDH in the different tissues, after seven days recovery period.. Hence, the changes in the enzymes are found as the best biomarkering tool to evaluate the effect of organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos on the aquatic biota.  相似文献
