Two species of small gastropods (<6 mm in length), Amphissa acutecostata (Philippi, 1844) and Gymnobela subaraneosa (Dautzenberg and Fischer, 1896), widely distributed in the northeast Atlantic, were found in large numbers in the Porcupine Seabight (Northeast Atlantic). Except for some aspects of taxonomy and distribution, as well as some data on larval development, the biology of these species is unknown. This study describes basic aspects of the life-history strategies of both species. Histological studies showed that oocyte and sperm development in both species was similar to the gametogenetic patterns observed in other deep-sea gastropods. In females, oogonia proliferated in the germinal epithelium and developed into previtellogenic oocytes (30–40 m), which grew into vitellogenic primary oocytes. Vitellogenic oocytes were covered by a thin layer of follicle cells involved in the vitellogenic processes. The maximum size for mature oocytes was 99.06 m for A. acutecostata and 114.82 m for G. subaraneosa. In A. acutecostata most of the volume of the ovary was occupied by previtellogenic and early vitellogenic oocytes, whereas in G. subaraneosa most of the volume was filled by large vitellogenic oocytes. Both species showed quasi-continuous production of oocytes. The oocyte size-frequency diagrams suggested a continuous release of a small number of oocytes throughout the year for A. acutecostata, and asynchronous periodic spawning events for G. subaraneosa. Gonad development and gametogenesis could be strongly affected by presence of parasites in one of the populations of G. subaraneosa.Communicated by J.P. Thorpe, Port Erin  相似文献

Ultrastructural features of oogenesis were examined in the pelagic polychaetes Rhynchonerella angelini and Alciopa reynaudii which were collected from Bahamian waters by a manned submersible during 1979 and 1980. No definitive ovary was detected in either species. Oogonia are released into the coelom as packets of cells, where they undergo mitotic division while surrounded by an envelope of sheath cells. Cytokinesis is incomplete, resulting in intercellular bridges between oogonia. Oocytes undergo early stages of meiosis characterized by the presence of synapsed chromosomes, followed by a period of rapid cytoplasmic and nuclear growth. Oocytes are released from the packets in the early vitellogenic phase into the coelom, where they undergo yolk synthesis as solitary coelomic cells. Vitellogenesis includes both autosynthetic and heterosynthetic processes. Autosynthesis involves the fusion of secretory vesicles formed by the combined activity of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex, with convoluted electron-dense tubular bodies of unknown origin. Heterosynthesis involves the intense uptake of exogenous precursors through endocytosis and their fusion into nascent yolk bodies which, in turn, are presumed to fuse with autosynthetically-derived yolk bodies. No nutrient stores were detected in somatic tissues. Early and middle stages of vitellogenic oocytes were absent from the coelom. This absence combined with the high level of endocytotic activity suggests that vitellogenesis occurs rapidly. These features, in combination with the presence of an exceptionally thin body wall and gut, might serve as related adaptations for predator avoidance by the maintenance of relatively low tissue-density. Alciopid, phyllodocid, and nereid polychaetes share some common reproductive features including the presence of dispersed ovaries, clusters of syncytial germ cells which undergo meiosis while enveloped by somatic cells and the release of oocytes from the clusters prior to vitellogenesis.  相似文献

The reproductive season of the Adelomelon brasiliana population of Mar del Plata extends from September to April (austral spring and summer), showing synchronisation with water temperature. Adult gonad state is related to shell-free wet mass. Oocytes reach 200 m in diameter before spawning. In autumn, a resting phase begins, when no new oocytes develop and the non-spawned ones undergo reabsorption. Gonadic development begins during the early winter, when new previtellogenic oocytes can be observed through histology. The long reproductive season would increase the ability of the species to recover from harvesting.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

The sexuality, reproductive mode, and timing of reproduction of Pocillopora verrucosa from the Republic of Maldives, Indian Ocean, were assessed using serial histological sections. These showed that P. verrucosa is an annual simultaneous hermaphrodite, with gonads arranged in two opposing arcs of alternating testes and ovaries, six gonads in each arc. No planulae were observed in any dissection or histological analysis carried out, therefore making brooding unlikely. Broadcast spawning is inferred from the disappearance of mature gametes from samples collected between late March and April 1991. Mean oocyte size at spawning was 53.5 m and mean potential fecundity was 7300 ooctyes cm-2yr-1. The reproductive pattern of P. verrucosa in the Maldives is compared to that of the same species in different locations, the short breeding season in March to April occurring earlier in the Maldives than in Red Sea populations. The maximum mean oocyte diameter found in Maldivian specimens was much smaller than elsewhere. The year-to-year variation in numbers of oocytes/polyp within single colonies, and the variation between colonies within the population was significant (p<0.01). Therefore, it is possible that fecundity is not a good variable to use when monitoring stress on coral reefs unless larger numbers of estimates can be routinely made. Some colonies contained immature oocytes at spawning that were not released and continued to grow to approximately twice the size of the spawned oocytes that were presumed to be mature. These unspawned oocytes were oosorbing, and were characterised by the presence of zooxanthellae and large numbers of vacuoles in their cytoplasm. This gradual expansion and oosorption of unspawned oocytes has not been documented previously for corals.  相似文献

The reproductive response of sexual and asexual female Brachionus plicatilis (Muller) was examined over temperatures ranging from 20° to 40°C, salinities from 5 to 40 S, and food levels from 0.25 to 20 g Chlorella vulgaris dry-weight per ml. Reduced food levels, as well as temperature and salinity extremes, reduced reproduction of both sexual and asexual females, but did so differentially. Reproduction by sexual females was reduced to a greater extent at environmental extremes than asexual females. The broad, flat reproductive response curve of asexual females extended beyond the limits of the narrower, more sharply peaked curve of sexual females. Thus zones of exclusively asexual reproduction exist at environmental extremes where sexual reproduction is physiologically restricted. These results are corroborated by a comparison of the lifetime fecundity of individual sexual and asexual females over a 20°C temperature range. No differences in lifetime fecundity occurred between sexual and asexual females at 18° and 28°C. At 38°C, however, asexual female fecundity reached its highest level, while sexual female fecundity declined 15%. The appearance of sexual females in rotifer populations in the result of both inducible and repressible factors.  相似文献

Using an autonomous free-fall vehicle (AU-DOS), observations were made of demersal fish attracted to baits and baited acoustic transmitters at two stations in the North Atlantic Ocean. A comparison was made between Station PAP (48°50N; 16°30W), 4800 m deep on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain which is relatively eutrophic, and Station MAP (31°N; 20°W), 4900 m deep on the Madeira Abyssal Plain, which is oligotrophic. Experiments were conducted during summer, in 1989 and 1990. Four species of fish were observed at Station MAP, the grenadier, Coryphaenoides (Nematonurus) armatus, the eel, Synaphobranchus bathybius, and the ophidiids Spectrunculus grandis, and Barathrites sp. At Station PAP, C. (N.) armatus and H. (S.) bathybius were attracted to bait on all deployments and only two other individuals of different species, probably ophidiids, were seen. The mean first grenadier arrival time was 30 and 138 min at Stations PAP and MAP, respectively. Mean first eel arrival time was 29 and 151 min at Stations PAP and MAP, respectively. Estimated population densities of fish were 167 grenadiers km-2 and 180 synaphobranchid eels km-2 at Station PAP and 8 grenadiers km-2 and 7 eels km-2 at Station MAP. Only the grenadier C. (N.) armatus definitely ingested transmitters, and this species dominated fish activity around the baits. Mean time of departure of grenadiers with transmitters in their stomachs across an acoustic horizon at 1000 m range was 371 and 488 min at Stations PAP and MAP, respectively. Grenadiers had a longer mean staying time at the food source at the more oligotrophic Station MAP (364 min) than at Station PAP (141 min). This corresponds with predictions of optimal foraging theory.  相似文献

Reproduction of two populations of Ophionereis schayeri (Müller and Troschel) in New South Wales was investigated from November 1991 through January 1993. The reproductive cycle was documented by histological examination of the gonads and by image analysis to determine the oocyte size-frequency distributions. Both populations of O. schayeri were mature in December and January and had a major summer spawning period between January and February. Thereafter, the condition of the gonads exhibited interindividual variability, with asynchronous low-intensity gamete release through August. O. schayeri has the potential to spawn for up to 8 mo of the year. This breeding pattern with synchronous spawning in summer and asynchronous gamete release through winter was similar in both populations. During autumn and winter, the gonads contained developing gametes and advanced gametes ready for spawning. The eggs spawned by O. schayeri during these seasons started their growth during the previous spring vitellogenic period, and continued to grow through summer. Upon reaching full size, they were stored for spawning outside the main breeding period. Spring is marked by increased spermatogenic and vitellogenic activity followed by maturation and spawning. Throughout their development, the oocytes of O. schayeri are surrounded by a follicle consisting of periodic acid-Schiff-positive (PAS+) haemal fluid and PAS+ yolk by the oocytes. In the testes, the haemal sinus projects into the centre of the spermatocyte columns, thus appearing to play a nutritive role in support of both oogenesis and spermatogenesis. Late vitellogenic oocytes of O. schayeri are firmly anchored to the germinal epithelium by an attachment complex consisting of specialised attachment cells and basophilic strands that radiate between the oolemma and the nucleus. Spawning is associated with rupture of the follicles, which remain as prominent, empty U-shaped profiles in the ovaries. O. schayeri produces copious numbers of 200 m-diam oocytes, suggesting that this species is a broadcast spawner and that it has a modified ophiopluteus or vitellaria larva.  相似文献

Summary In many insects nutrients transferred by the male to the female at mating are later incorporated into both the eggs and soma of the mated females. Accordingly, it has been suggested that female insects can use these male-derived nutrients both for somatic maintenance and to increase both the number and quality of their offspring. Moreover, much discussion is presently devoted to whether the male nuptial gift represents paternal investment, defined as any increase in given male's total surviving progeny by increasing the reproductive output by a given female, or mating effort which obtains if a male gains by increasing the proportion of eggs he fertilizes from a given female (Parker and Simmons 1989). If the male nuptial gift represents parental investment it should be expected to benefit predominantly the offspring sired by the donor, whereas the physiological fate of the male nuptial gift is somewhat irrelevant under the mating effort explanation. In this paper we test these issues by studying the lifetime fecundity, egg weights and longevity of two groups of females of the polyandrous green-veined white butterfly, Pieris napi, one group of which was allowed to mate only once and the other of which was allowed to mate at liberty, the latter group of females mating on average 2.28 times. Moreover, to test the incorporation rate of male-derived nutrients, we performed a second set of experiments where females were allowed to mate with radioactively labelled males. The results showed that polyandrous females had higher lifetime fecundity compared to monandrous females, laying on average 1.61 as many eggs, and that the difference in cumulative fecundity between the two groups was statistically significant from the 5th day of egg-laying onwards. Polyandrous females also lived longer and maintained egg weight at a high level for longer than monandrous females. Largely concomitant with egg-laying rate, incorporation rate of male-derived nutrients peaked 3–4 days after mating, subsequently tapering off to stabilize at about 40% of the maximum. Given the opportunity, female P. napi remated after 3–5 days, the duration of the refractory period being positively correlated with ejaculate mass. Hence, although the nutrient investment of the first male to mate with a female subsidizes the progeny of later-mating males, the male nuptial gift in P. napi clearly qualifies as both paternal investment and mating effort. Sex allocation theory for sequential hermaphrodites predicts the size at which an individual should change sex, given the different relationships between individual size and reproductive success in the two sexes. We studied a host-parasite system where the myxozoan Kudoa ovivora infects the ovaries of the reef fish Thalassoma bifasciatum, a protogynous sequential hermaphrodite. The parasite sporulates in the hosts eggs and renders them infertile. It is thus expected to reduce the females reproductive success, and could thereby influence host sex change. We present data from marked fish we observed in the field over 4 months. The data suggest that females infected with Kudoa ovivora have a lower reproductive success, change sex earlier and at a smaller size than uninfected females. These results are in agreement with predictions from sex allocation theory, and provide the first example of a possible parasitic influence on the sex allocation of its host.Communicated by P. The sabellid, Terebrasabella heterouncinata, is a small (<5 mm) intratubular brooder that lives in burrows within the hosts shell matrix. It is a semi-continuous breeder and despite producing small numbers of large eggs, infestation by this animal has reached epidemic proportions on local abalone farms. The present study compared the morphometrics and reproductive characteristics of worms from farmed and wild abalone, in the Walker Bay area of the south Western Cape Province of South Africa, to gain insights into why this animal has become so successful under aquaculture conditions. The farms designated farm A and farm B each had one on-farm site, and two wild sites, while farm C had two on-farm sites and two wild sites. The wild sites were natural abalone habitats located within 2.5 km of the farms. Our results conclusively showed that environmental conditions prevalent on the farms enhanced the reproductive success of these worms relative to that observed in its natural environment. At farms B and C, worms occurred in significantly higher densities at the on-farm sites than in the corresponding wild samples, but at farm A, density was equally low at the three sites. At all three farms, a greater proportion of the population was reproductively active in the on-farm samples than in the wild samples. Worms on farmed abalone had a higher instantaneous fecundity, brooded more clutches simultaneously and were larger than their conspecifics from the wild. There was a positive correlation between adult size and brood size and the number of clutches brooded simultaneously. Within the three on-farm sites there was a negative correlation between egg volume and brood size, indicating a trade-off between these traits. However, such a trade-off was not apparent between sites, with brood size being higher at the on-farm sites than at the wild sites, irrespective of egg size. This suggests that the stable nutrient-enriched environment on the farm led to an increase in fecundity without compromising the size (and implicitly the quality) of the eggs. Worm density did not have a significant effect on body size or any other reproductive traits at most sites, and the density of T. heterouncinata was unaffected by the density of other shell-infesting polychaetes. The results suggest that the farm environment has selected for larger, more fecund worms that breed rapidly with high recruitment success as a consequence of abundant nutrients, high host density, habitat stability and a possible lack of predation and interspecific competition.Communicated by J.P. The vertical distribution, diel gut pigment content and oxygen consumption of Calanus euxinus were studied in April and September 1995 in the Black Sea. Gut pigment content of C. euxinus females was associated with diel vertical migration of the individuals, and it varied with depth and time. Highest gut pigment content was observed during the nighttime, when females were in the chlorophyll a (chl a) rich surface waters, but significant feeding also occurred in the deep layer. Gut pigment content throughout the water column varied from 0.8 to 22.0 ng pigment female–1 in April and from 0.2 to 21 ng pigment female–1 in September 1995. From the diel vertical migration pattern, it was estimated that female C. euxinus spend 7.5 h day–1 in April and 10.5 h day–1 in September in the chl a rich surface waters. Daily consumption by female C. euxinus in chl a rich surface waters was estimated by taking into account the feeding duration and gut pigment concentrations. Daily carbon rations of female C. euxinus, derived from herbivorous feeding in the euphotic zone, ranged from 6% to 11% of their body carbon weight in April and from 15% to 35% in September. Oxygen consumption rates of female and copepodite stage V (CV) C. euxinus were measured at different temperatures and at different oxygen concentrations. Oxygen consumption rates at oxygen-saturated concentration ranged from an average of 0.67 g O2 mg–1 dry weight (DW) h–1 at 5°C to 2.1 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for females, and ranged from 0.48 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 5°C to 1.5 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 23°C for CVs. The rate of oxygen consumption at 16°C varied from 0.62 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.65 mg O2 l–1 to 1.57 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.35 mg O2 l–1 for CVs, and from 0.74 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 0.57 mg O2 l–1 to 2.24 g O2 mg–1 DW h–1 at 4.37 mg O2 l–1 for females. From the oxygen consumption rates, daily requirements for the routine metabolism of females were estimated, and our results indicate that the herbivorous daily ration was sufficient to meet the routine metabolic requirements of female C. euxinus in April and September in the Black Sea.Communicated by O. Research on the spawning and fecundity of the Argentinean mackerel Scomber japonicus marplatensis was carried out during the spawning season 1966/67. The purpose of the present study was to obtain data for the estimation of the number of eggs which can be produced and spawned by one female of a known size, during one season of reproduction: 152 females were studied. All yolked ova of the biggest size group were taken into consideration. On the basis of the relatively short spawning season, the great homogeneity in meristic characteristics, and histological examination, it is assumed that the Argentinean mackerel spawns once a year. The fecundity of the smallest female of 315 mm in total length was calculated to be 101,859 eggs, and the total number of yolked ova 181,000; for the biggest female of 470 mm in length, 522,370 and 853,500, respectively. The relation fecundity/length and fecundity/weight is almost rectilineal. The equations: F=8.17 0.008L for fecundity/length relationship, and F=0.42 W 1.043 for fecundity/weight relationship, were calculated. Prediction curves were established in each case. It would appear that the fecundity of smaller fish is associated more with length, and the fecundity of bigger fish more with weight. Large differences in fecundity of specimens of the same size were observed.Communicated by M. Vannucoi, So Paulo  相似文献

Although the taxonomy of deep-sea protobranch bivalves is becoming better known, relatively little information is available on their reproductive biology and whether or not populations show reproductive periodicities. We have examined the reproductive biology of three common sympatric species as part of a long-term time-series of samples taken from 2900 m in the Rockall Trough from 1973 to 1983. Malletia cuneata Jeffreys, 1876 produces a maximum of 30 oocytes at any one time and these grow to a maximum size of 240 m. Maximum fecundity of Ledella pustulosa (Jeffreys, 1876) and Yoldiella jeffreysi (Hidalgo, 1877) is 174 and 360, respectively, and both species produce an egg of 120 m in diameter. These data indicate lecithotrophic early development in L. pustulosa and Y. jeffreysi, but direct development in M. cuneata; however, evidence from the prodissoconch length of M. cuneata suggests lecithotrophic development. L. pustulosa and Y. jeffreysi also differ from M. cuneata in having a distinct reproductive cycle with spawnout in the winter months. Both the continuously breeding M. cuneata and the seasonally breeding L. pustulosa ingest diatoms, coccoliths and foraminiferans, but whereas the diet of M. cuneata appears to be constant throughout the year there is an apparent reduction in the feeding activity of L. pustulosa concomitant with the deposition of phytodetritus on the deep-sea bed.  相似文献

InMytilus edulis L., gametogenesis takes place in the mantle at the expense of the connective storage tissue. There are two main types of storage cells: vesicular (VC) cells storing large amounts of glycogen and adipogranular (ADG) cells containing large numbers of protein granules, lipid droplets and lesser amounts of glycogen. One of the ways in which stored reserves can be mobilized for gamete formation is by controlled autophagy, in which the cellular constituents are degraded by lysosomes. Mussels were collected from the Menai Strait, North Wales, and monthly measurements made, over two years (1984–1986), of the activities of lysosomal acid hydrolases (acid phosphatase,-N-acetyl-D-glucosaminidase and-glucuronidase) and Cathepsins B and L in the mantle tissue, isolated ADG cells, low-density cells and, during spawning, in the mature oocytes of female mussels. The lysosomal proteinases, Cathepsins B, L and H, were further characterised by activation with thiol compounds and inhibition with thiol blockers and by leupeptin. Because of the low activity in the mantle tissue ofM. edulis, Cathepsin H was not assayed on a seasonal basis. There was a general increase in lysosomal enzyme activity during the winter, which can be related to increased autolysis in the storage cells and to the process of maturation in the developing oocytes. The activity of Cathepsin B was highest in the ADG and low-density cells, implying an important role in proteolysis within the ADG cells. By contrast, Cathepsin L displayed the highest activity in the mature oocytes, suggesting a major function of Cathepsin L in the development and maturation of the oocytes. Two different-glucosidase activities were measured in the monthly assays, one with a pH optimum of 4.5 (acid) and the other at pH 7.5 (neutral). Highest activities of the acid-glycosidase were found in the low-density cells, but there were no significant seasonal changes in the mantle tissue as a whole. Activities of the neutral-glucosidase were low in the ADG cells and mature oocytes, but showed high activities in the mantle tissue, with marked seasonal changes that corresponded to the mobilization of glycogen reserves in the VC cells.  相似文献

Nanoplankton and picoplankton primary production has been studied at two oceanic stations in the Porcupine Sea-bight and at one shelf station in the Celtic Sea. At both sites, low wind conditions in June and July 1985 resulted in greatly reduced vertical turbulent mixing and a secondary, temporary thermocline developed in what is usually a well-mixed surface layer; as a result, there was physical separation of the phytoplankton within two zones of the surface mixed layer. The photosynthetic characteristics of three size fractions (>5 m, <5 to >1 m and <1 to >0.2 m) of phytoplankton populations from the two zones have been measured. Phytoplankton was more abundant at the oceanic stations and chlorophyll a values were between 1.3 and 2.2 mg chlorophyll a m-3, compared with 0.3 to 0.6 mg chlorophyll a m-3 at the shelf station; at both stations, numbers of cyanobacteria were slightly higher in the lower zone of the surface mixed layer. There was no effect of the temporary thermocline on the vertical profiles of primary production and most phtosynthesis occurred in the surface 10 m. Photosynthetic parameters of the three size fractions of phytoplankton have been determined; there was considerable day-to-day variation in the measured photosynthetic parameters. Assimilation number (P m B ) of all >5 m phytoplankton was lower for the deeper than for the surface populations, but there was little change in initial slope (a B ). The small oceanic nanoplankton (<5 to >1 m) showed changes similar to the >5 m phytoplankton, but the same size fraction from the shelf station showed changes that were more like those shown by the picoplankton (<1 m) viz, little change in P m B but an increase in a B with depth. Values of a B were generally greater for the picoplankton fraction than for the larger phytoplankton, but values of adaptation parameter (I k )(=P m B /) were not always less. There was little evidence to support the hypothesis that these populations of picoplankton were significantly more adapted to low light conditions than the larger phytoplankton cells. When photosynthetic parameters of the picoplankton were normalised to cell number (P m C /a C ) rather than chlorophyll a, P m C was comparable to other published data for picoplankton, but a C was much lower. The maximum doubling time of the picoplankton at saturating irradiance is calculated to be ca. 8.5 h for the oceanic population and ca. 6.2 h for the shelf population.  相似文献

Juvenile Mytilus edulis were grown individually in plastic racks in a tidal salt marsh for 72 d in 1984, starved in the laboratory for 130 d, and then fed the alga Isochrysis galbana daily for 64 d. Oxygen consumption was measured at various times during the course of starvation and recovery. The effects of both size (tissue dry weight) and condition (tissue size relative to shell size) on the rate of oxygen consumption during the course of starvation and recovery were analyzed by multiple regression. Weight-specific preprandial rate was inversely correlated with both size and condition. Weight-specific active rate (measured shortly after feeding) was correlated with size but not condition. Relative Scope for Activity was inversely correlated with size and positively correlated with condition. Relative Specific Dynamic Action (RSDA; the integrated physiological and mechanical response to a meal) was initially correlated negatively with size and subsequently positively with condition. Glycogen content was shown to be positively correlated with condition in mussels before starvation and during recovery. During recovery, experimental mussels returned to 90% of their estimated dry weight prior to starvation, and from 53% after starvation. At weekly intervals during recovery, oxygen consumption was measured following a meal until it returned to the preprandial rate. Both pre- and postprandial volumes (l at STP) of oxygen consumed per hour ( O 2pre and O 2post , respectively) increased significantly during recovery. The postprandial rise in oxygen consumption increased significantly from 15% to 23% of O 2pre . At the end of the recovery period, RSDA [( O 2post – O 2pre )/ O 2pre ] was independent of final dry weight, but was significantly correlated with percent dry weight recovered (r 2=0.44; df=10; P<0.02). The increase in RSDA may reflect increased utilization of food and its conversion to soma during recovery from starvation, as distinct from mechanical energy expenditure (feeding activity) following a meal.  相似文献

1.  The physical characteristics of the drumming signal produced by workers of carpenter ants (Camponotus herculeanus L.) inside their nests, constructed in trees, were investigated. Typical elements of the inner nest structure are lamellae of about 50–500 cm2 derived from gnawing out the soft spring wood. On the thinnest lamellae (about 1 mm thick) the highest acceleration amplitudes of the signal were measured (on average 375 cm/s2 from peak to peak). The largest part of the intensity spectrum is between 200 and 1,500 Hz. On thicker lamellae the acceleration amplitudes are lower (at 12 mm thickness they average 140 cm/s2), and the upper end of the frequency range of the intensity spectrum is increased. The attenuation during the transmission is least along the longitudinal axis of thin cantilever lamellae (0.4 dB/cm) without alterations of thickness or connections to other lamellae. On a typical structure of the inner nest the attenuation is 1.2 dB/cm in the longitudinal axis, 2.7 dB/cm in the tangential axis and 4.3 dB/cm in the radial axis.
2.  The frequency of behavioural reactions to some vibrational stimuli was investigated. In worker ants sine-wave pulses release a stop-reaction (total freezing) or several reactions combined with locomotion (run-reactions). At high intensities (500 cm/s2) and high frequencies (1,000 Hz) mostly run-reactions occur, whereas, at the lower ranges, the stop-reaction predominates. The stop-reaction is released more often if the rise-decay times of the sine-wave pulses are short. The lowest acceleration threshold of reactions is 5 cm/s2 at frequencies ranging between 250–750 Hz. Stimulation with shockpulses causes mostly the stop-reaction and only few run-reactions. The lowest threshold is 5 cm/s2. Thus the animals can perceive the drumming signal over an average distance, depending on the direction of transmission, of 10–30 cm, and over 90 cm at the maximum. Shockpulse series are a stronger stimulus than single pulses of the same acceleration amplitude. The most effective time interval of the shockpulses is about 50 ms, which is the most frequent time interval of the beats of the natural drumming. A simple model describes the increased effect of shockpulse series by an additive superposition of functions of residual effects following the single pulses.
3.  Collective behavioural reactions to imitated drumming signals were investigated. They depend on the situation of the perceiving animals. The locomotory activity, measured by the number of changes from one nest compartment to the next, is increased by the signal. The combination with a second stimulus (air-puffs) increases the locomotory activity even more, and at the intensities used, multiplies the effects of the different stimuli. No orientation of the reactions with respect to the vibration source was found. The drumming signal shortens the time which males, females or larvae need to depart or to be carried by worker ants from nest areas affected by light to darkened ones. If ants of other species intrude into a nest, they are attacked more often. The drumming signal is not involved in the coordination of the mating flight.

Fungiacyathus marenzelleri (Vaughan, 1906) is a deep-water solitary coral, cosmopolitan in distribution that is found at depths of 300–6,328 m. This study examined gametogenesis, inter-annual variability and reproductive periodicity of F. marenzelleri collected from Station M (34°50′N, 123°00′W) in the northeast Pacific at a depth of 4,100 m. Samples were collected (May, June, October 1996; August 1998; February, June 2001; and June 2002) and histologically processed with spermatogenic stage, oocyte size and fecundity measured. Four stages of spermatogenesis were identified and all males contained multiple stages of sperm development in each seasonal sample. Three stages of oocyte development were identified; previtellogenic (<28–150 μm), vitellogenic (150–300 μm) and late vitellogenic (300–400 μm). Comparison of mean oocyte diameters among sampling dates showed there were no inter-annual variations or seasonal differences. Overall, fecundity was 1,290 (±407) oocytes polyp−1, and with no significant differences between sample months. Fecundity was not polyp-size dependent. This study shows a similar quasi-continuous mode of reproduction to this species examined from the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, but the fecundity is reduced by 50%. The reproductive output may fluctuate in relation to the input of organic material at this site, as shown by non-significant trends in the oocyte size-frequency and fecundity data. A quasi-continuous output of gametes would promote successful fertilisation and wide dispersal of the lecithotrophic larvae.  相似文献

Paralvinella grasslei is a polychaetous annelid living in the harsh, unstable and heterogeneous environmental conditions found at deep-sea hydrothermal vent sites in the eastern Pacific. The aim of this work was to examine the possible influence of the reproductive biology of P. grasslei on the structure of its populations. Maximum observed oocyte size inside the oviduct is 275 m, and fecundity is relatively low. Examination of gametes and young specimens suggested a direct benthic development for this species. The population structure of P. grasslei at 13°N/EPR (EPR=East Pacific Rise) revealed a discontinuous recruitment which seems to be synchronized within vent sites and fields. The data also suggested the occurrence of discrete breeding periods. P. grasslei probably reproduces several times a years, with an apparent periodicity. Tidal signals could be a possible cue for the coordination of the reproductive cycle. The life-history of P. grasslei is discussed in light of the reproductive biology of other terebellomorph polychaetes, and seems to be well adapted for colonizing the unstable environment of hot vents. Two main hypotheses can explain the dissemination processes of this species along axial oceanic ridges. The influence of nearbottom currents occurring along the central graben of the East Pacific Rise can be cosidered to account for part of the transport of larvae and juveniles, but the observations of polychaete erpochaetes on the test of hydrothermal bythograeid crabs and evidence that crab migrations occur between vents also support the possibility of zoochory for the dissemination of alvinellid polychaetes.  相似文献
