A saturation of climate–carbon cycle feedback was found earlier in the simulations with the IAP RAS climate model of intermediate complexity. Here, this eventual saturation is interpreted by using a conceptual linearised coupled model. It is shown that this saturation is due to weak, logarithmic, dependence of the carbon dioxide radiative forcing on its atmospheric concentration. This eventual saturation leads to the non-monotonic behaviour of climate–carbon cycle parameter f   in time. If the time scale of the atmospheric CO2CO2 build up is tptp then, starting from an initial equilibrium, f   approaches maximum in time ?tp?tp. Afterwards, climate–carbon cycle parameter decreases and eventually tends to unity. The time scale of the latter decrease is t1=(1−5)tpt1=(15)tp. A dependence of tmtm and t1t1 on governing parameters of the conceptual model is studied. It is argued that an eventual saturation of the climate–carbon cycle feedback is expected to occur also in the other integrations of sufficient length with coupled climate–carbon cycle models.  相似文献

The ratio of variable fluorescence to maximal fluorescence (F v/F m) was measured during a night and day cycle in five different macroalgae growing in the littoral zone at the Swedish west coast; the green algae Ulva lactuca, Cladophora sp. and Enteromorpha flexousa, the red alga Ceramium nodulosum and the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus. All the green algae and C. nodulosum showed both diurnal fluctuations in F v/F m during days of high light intensities and a significant negative correlation between F v/F m and photon irradiance (PI). An attempt has been made to improve calculations of macroalgal net growth based on carbon fixation (αnet) considering this diurnal change in F v/F m. By assuming that the negative linear correlation between F v/F m and the maximum quantum yield for photosynthesis (Φ) is proportional to that between F v/F m and αnet, it was possible to include the daily variation of αnet due to photoinhibition. To compensate for the variation of F v/F m, a representative value for each day was obtained by weighting all values of F v/F m over the diurnal period in relation to total PI. For all algal species there was a fairly good agreement between this representative value and the F v/F m value measured around noon. As the daily representative F v/F m value showed a negative linear correlation with the daily mean PI, it was possible to correct αnet for differences of daily mean PI. We document the distribution and abundance of seagrasses, as well as the intra-annual temporal patterns in the abundance of seagrasses and the productivity of the nearshore dominant seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) in the south Florida region. At least one species of seagrass was present at 80.8% of 874 randomly chosen mapping sites, delimiting 12,800 km2 of seagrass beds in the 17,000-km2 survey area. Halophila decipiens had the greatest range in the study area; it was found to occur over 7,500 km2. The range of T. testudinum was almost as extensive (6,400 km2), followed by Syringodium filiforme (4,400 km2), Halodule wrightii (3,000 km2) and Halophila engelmanni (50 km2 ). The seasonal maxima of standing crop was about 32% higher than the yearly mean. The productivity of T. testudinum was both temporally and spatially variable. Yearly mean areal productivity averaged 0.70 g m−2day−1, with a range of 0.05–3.29 g m−2 day−1. Specific productivity ranged between 3.2 and 34.2 mg g−1 day−1, with a mean of 18.3 mg g−1 day−1. Annual peaks in specific productivity occurred in August, and minima in February. Integrating the standing crop for the study area gives an estimate of 1.4 × 1011 g T. testudinum and 3.6 × 1010 g S. filiforme, which translate to a yearly production of 9.4 × 1011 g T. testudinum leaves and 2.4 × 1011 g S. filiforme leaves. We assessed the efficacy of rapid visual surveys for estimating abundance of seagrasses in south Florida by comparing these results to measures of leaf biomass for T. testudinum and S. filiforme. Our rapid visual surveys proved useful for quantifying seagrass abundance, and the data presented in this paper serve as a benchmark against which future change in the system can be quantified. Stable isotope analysis is increasingly used in ecological studies. Because lipid content influences δ13C, lipids should be removed from lipid-rich samples before δ13C analysis. To account for differences in δ13C arising from differences in lipid content, relationships between lipid content, C:N ratio and Δδ13C with lipid removal can be used to normalise lipid content to uniform levels. We investigate these relationships for salmonid muscle and evaluate the suitability of previously published normalisation equations for these fish. Salmonids with a wide range of condition (muscle lipid content = 3–35% of dry weight) were considered. There were no consistent relationships between lipid content or C:N ratio and Δδ15N. There were linear relationships between C:N ratio and lipid content (L = −16.53 + 6.27 × C:N); C:N ratio and Δδ13C (Δδ13C = −1.87 + 0.65 × C:N); and lipid content and Δδ13C (Δδ13C = 0.01 + 0.10 × L), which should be used on salmonid stable isotope studies.  相似文献

Nutrients were added separately and combined to an initial concentration of 10 μM (ammonium) and/or 2 μM (phosphate) in a series of experiments carried out with the giant clam Tridacna maxima at 12 microatolls in One Tree Island lagoon, Great Barrier Reef, Australia (ENCORE Project). These nutrient concentrations remained for 2 to 3 h before returning to natural levels. The additions were made every low tide (twice per day) over 13 and 12 mo periods for the first and second phase of the experiment, respectively. The nutrients did not change the wet tissue weight of the clams, host C:N ratio, protein content of the mantle, calcification rates or growth rates. However, ammonium (N) enrichment alone significantly increased the total population density of the algal symbiont (Symbiodinium sp.: C = 3.6 · 108 cell clam−1, N = 6.6 · 108 cell clam−1, P = 5.7 · 108 cell clam−1, N + P = 5.7 · 108 cell clam−1; and C = 4.1 · 108 cell clam−1, N = 5.1 · 108 cell clam−1, P = 4.7 · 108 cell clam−1, N + P = 4.5 · 108 cell clam−1, at the end of the first and second phases of the experiment, respectively), although no differences in the mitotic index of these populations were detected. The total chlorophyll a (chl a) content per clam but not chlorophyll a per cell also increased with ammonium addition (C = 7.0 mg chl a clam−1, N = 13.1 mg chl a clam−1, P = 12.9 mg chl a clam−1, N + P = 11.8 mg chl a clam−1; and C = 8.8 mg chl a clam−1, N = 12.8 mg chl a clam−1; P = 11.2 mg chl a clam−1, N + P = 11.3 mg chl a clam−1, at the end of the first and second phases of the experiment, respectively). The response of clams to nutrient enrichment was quantitatively small, but indicated that small changes in inorganic nutrient levels affect the clam–zooxanthellae association.  The influence of moulting and ovarian maturation on cadmium accumulation in the tissues of female shore crabs Carcinus maenas exposed to 1 mg Cd l−1 in the water was investigated. Cadmium accumulation in all tissues examined was markedly increased in crabs in the postmoult stages (A and B) compared to crabs in all other moult stages. During the moult cycle, average cadmium accumulation in the midgut gland ranged from 29 μg Cd g−1 dw at premoult stage (D2) to 589 μg Cd g−1 dw at postmoult stage (A). Average cadmium concentrations in the haemolymph ranged from 0.56 μg Cd ml−1 at intermoult stage (C4) to 4.6 μg Cd ml−1 at postmoult stage (A), while the gills accumulated from 103 μg Cd g−1 dw in intermoult stage (C3) to 352 μg Cd g−1 dw in postmoult stage (A). Cadmium concentration in gills and haemolymph was also significantly higher in crabs in late premoult stage (D3) compared to C4-crabs, while midgut gland cadmium concentration remained elevated in C1- and C3- intermoult stages relative to C4. During ovarian maturation the cadmium accumulation in midgut gland, gills, ovaries and haemolymph decreased. Average cadmium concentration in the midgut gland decreased from 63 μg g−1 dw in ovarian Stage I to 19 μg g−1 dw in ovarian Stage VI. The same pattern was observed for gills, haemolymph and ovaries. The present study demonstrates that cadmium accumulation in the female shore crab strongly depends on the physiological status of the animal. Quality of groundwater in the Yarmouk basin, Jordan has been assessed through the study of hydrogeochemical characteristics and the water chemistry as it is considered the main source for drinking and agriculture activities in the region. The results of the relationship between Ca2+ + Mg2+ versus HCO3? + CO32?, Ca2+ + Mg2+ versus total cations, Na+ + K+ versus total cations, Cl? + SO42? versus Na+ + K+, Na+ versus Cl?, Na+ versus HCO3? + CO32?, Na+ versus Ca2+, and Na+: Cl? versus EC describe the mineral dissolution mechanism through the strong relationship between water with rocks in alkaline conditions with the release of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3?, CO32?, SO42?, and F? ions in the groundwater for enrichment. Furthermore, evaporation processes, groundwater depletion, and ion exchange contribute to the increased concentration of Na+ and Cl? ions in groundwater. Anthropogenic sources are one of the main reasons for contamination of groundwater in the study area and for increasing the concentration of Mg2+, Na+, Cl?, SO42?, and NO3? ions. Results show the quality of groundwater in the study area is categorized as follows: HCO3? + CO32? > Cl? > SO42? > NO3? > F? and Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+. In conclusion, the results of TDS, TH, and chemical composition showed that 26% of the groundwater samples were unsuitable for drinking. About 28% of groundwater samples in the study area have a high concentration of Mg2+, Na+, and NO3? above the acceptable limit. Also, based on high SAR, 10% of the groundwater samples were not suitable for irrigation purposes.  相似文献

The Salí River Basin in north-west Argentina (7,000 km2) is composed of a sequence of Tertiary and Quaternary loess deposits, which have been substantially reworked by fluvial and aeolian processes. As with other areas of the Chaco-Pampean Plain, groundwater in the basin suffers a range of chemical quality problems, including arsenic (concentrations in the range of 12.2–1,660 μg L−1), fluoride (50–8,740 μg L−1), boron (34.0–9,550 μg L−1), vanadium (30.7–300 μg L−1) and uranium (0.03–125 μg L−1). Shallow groundwater (depths up to 15 m) has particularly high concentrations of these elements. Exceedances above WHO (2011) guideline values are 100% for As, 35% for B, 21% for U and 17% for F. Concentrations in deep (>200 m) and artesian groundwater in the basin are also often high, though less extreme than at shallow depths. The waters are oxidizing, with often high bicarbonate concentrations (50.0–1,260 mg L−1) and pH (6.28–9.24). The ultimate sources of these trace elements are the volcanic components of the loess deposits, although sorption reactions involving secondary Al and Fe oxides also regulate the distribution and mobility of trace elements in the aquifers. In addition, concentrations of chromium lie in range of 79.4–232 μg L−1 in shallow groundwater, 129–250 μg L−1 in deep groundwater and 110–218 μg L−1 in artesian groundwater. All exceed the WHO guideline value of 50 μg L−1. Their origin is likely to be predominantly geogenic, present as chromate in the ambient oxic and alkaline aquifer conditions.  相似文献

The daily abundance of aloricate ciliates at Lime Cay, Jamaica, a shallow neritic site, ranged from 29 to 118 × 106 m–2 (0.97 to 3.93 × 106 m–3) between November 1985 and November 1986. Biomass was converted to kilojoules (1 kcal=4.1855 kJ) assuming 42% carbon, 20.15 kJ (g dry wt)–1, and 20% cell shrinkage. Biomass ranged from 0.40 to 3.00 kJ m–2 (13.3 to 100 J m–3; 0.28 to 2.08µg C l–1) with an annual mean of 1.11 kJ m–2 (36.8 J m–3; 0.764µg C l–1). Nanociliates (<20µm equivalent spherical diameter, ESD) dominated abundance, but microciliates (> 20µm ESD) dominated biomass.Strombidium, Strobilidium, Tontonia andLaboea species were conspicuous taxa. Annual production estimates of the aloricate assemblage, based on literature growth rates, ranged from 404 kJ m–2 yr–1 (37 J m–3 d–1) to 1614 kJ m–2 yr–1 (147 J m–3 d–1). A compromise estimate of 689 kJ m–2 yr–1 (i.e., 63 J m–3 d–1) is comparable to other estimates from tropical and subtropical regions. A model of annual energy flow through 11 planktonic compartments suggests the total ciliate assemblage (aloricates and tintinnines) to be as productive as metazoan herbivores and metazoan carnivores.  相似文献

Photochemical degradation of 1-nitropyrene, 2-nitrofluorene, 2,7-dinitrofluorene, 6-nitrochrysene, 3-nitrofluoranthene, 5-nitroacenaphthene, and 9-nitroanthracene was examined in CHCl3, CH2Cl2, DMF, DMF/H2O (80/20), CH3CN, or CH3CN/H2O (80/20). The degradation mostly follows the first order kinetics; but a few follow second order kinetics or undergo self-catalysis. The photodegradation rates follow the order: CHCl3 > CH2Cl2 > DMF > DMF/H2O > CH3CN > CH3CN/H2O. DMF is an exceptional solvent because three of the seven compounds undergo self-catalytic reaction. 9-Nitroanthracene, which has a perpendicular nitro group, is the fastest, while the more compact 1-nitropyrene and 3-nitrofluoranthene are the slowest degrading compounds.  相似文献

Samples of the scleractinian coral Pocillopora damicornis were collected from six sites located around four islands in the Ryukyu Archipelago, southern Japan, and subjected to allozyme electrophoresis. Seven polymorphic loci were examined for their allelic patterns. The ratio of observed to expected genotypic diversity (0.30 < G o :G e  < 0.64), the ratio of the observed number of genotypes to the number of individuals (0.47 < N g :N i  < 0.75), and deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium indicated that asexual reproduction plays a major role in the maintenance of established populations. However, populations were not completely dominated by a single or a few clones, and most clones were represented by only a few individual samples. The high frequency of typhoons in the region suggests that, in P. damicornis, fragmentation caused through occasional exposure to powerful waves is a major mode of asexual reproduction, but asexual production of planulae may also be contributing to the maintenance of populations. A significant genetic differentiation (F ST) was found between the six populations examined (0.027 < F ST < 0.092, average F ST = 0.056). The moderate gene flow is discussed according to characteristics of the larval stage of the species, and to circulation patterns in the region. Rawal Lake Reservoir is renowned for its ecological significance and is the sole source of drinking water of the third largest city of Pakistan. However, fish kill in recent years and anthropogenic impacts from human-related activities in its catchment area have resulted in deterioration of its surface water quality. This study aims to characterize spatial and temporal variations in surface water quality, identify contaminant sources, and compare their levels with quality guidelines. Surface water samples were collected from 10 sites and analyzed for 27 physicochemical parameters for a period of 2 years on a seasonal basis. Concentration of metals in surface water in pre-monsoon were in the order: Fe > Mg > Ca > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cr > Cu > Co > Pb, whereas in post-monsoon, the order of elemental concentrations was: Ca > Mg > Na > Fe > K > Zn > Cr > Li > Pb > Co > Ni > Cu > Mn > Cd. Metals (Ni, Fe, Zn, and Ca), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and nutrients (PO43−, NO3–N, and SO42−) were measured higher in pre-monsoon, whereas concentration of Cu, Mn, Cr, Co, Pb, Cd, K, Na, Mg, Li, Cl, and NH4–N were recorded higher in post-monsoon. Results highlighted serious metal pollution of surface water. Mean concentration of Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu, Fe, Cr, and Pb in both seasons and Mn in post-monsoon were well above the permissible level of surface water quality criteria. Results stress the dire need to reduce heavy-metal input into the lake basin and suggest that heavy-metal contamination should be considered as an integral part of future planning and management strategies for restoration of water quality of the lake reservoir.  相似文献

The ability to forage at low light intensities can be of great importance for the survival of fish larvae in a pelagic environment. Three-dimensional silhouette imaging was used to observe larval cod foraging and swimming behaviour at three light intensities (dusk ~1.36 × 10−3 W/m2, night ~1.38 × 10−4 W/m2 and darkness ~3.67 × 10−6 W/m2) at 4 different ages from 6 to 53 days post-hatch (dph). At 6 dph, active pursuit of prey was only observed under dusk conditions. Attacks, and frequent orientations, were observed from 26 dph under night conditions. This was consistent with swimming behaviour which suggested that turn angles were the same under dusk and night conditions, but lower in darkness. Cod at 53 dph attacked prey in darkness and turn angles were not different from those under other light conditions. This suggests that larvae are still able to feed at light intensities of 3.67 × 10−6 W/m2. We conclude that larval cod can maintain foraging behaviour under light intensities that correspond to night-time at depths at which they are observed in the field, at least if they encounter high-density patches of prey such as those that they would encounter at thin layers or fronts.  相似文献

 Genetic variation in 15 Holothuria (Microthele) nobilis (Selenka, 1867) populations on the Great Barrier Reef was studied at seven polymorphic allozyme loci. Although populations were separated by distances up to 1300 km, there were no apparent restrictions to gene flow (F ST values were not significantly different from 0) and the maximum Nei's unbiased genetic distance was 0.003. Populations were in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium at all loci. The estimated maximum sexual input [this is the ratio of the number of sexually produced individuals (N*) to the sample size (N i )] and the minimum sexual input [this is the ratio of the number of genotypes (N go ) over the sample size (N i )] were used as estimators for the amount of asexual reproduction. Both parameters suggested that H. nobilis reproduces solely by sexual means (N*:N i : = 1; N go :N i  = 0.74 to 1). The allozyme data indicated high gene flow between populations, but the possibility that allozyme frequencies may not be at equilibrium means that it was not possible to distinguish whether the patterns reflect present-day dispersal or dispersal that occurred in the past. Ammonium concentrations of ∼1 M are commonly cited as being the threshold for inhibition of NO3 uptake, but the applicability of this threshold to phytoplankton from different taxonomic classes has rarely been examined. Additionally, little is known about the influence of environmental variables (e.g. growth temperature) on the interaction between ambient NH4 + and NO3 uptake. Four species of estuarine phytoplankton, two diatom [Chaetoceros sp., and Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell et Hasle] and two dinoflagellate [Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller, and Gyrodinium uncatenum Hulburt], were grown on NO3 at several different temperatures (4, 10, 15, or 20 °C), and the impact of NH4 + additions on NO3 uptake/assimilation (non-TCA-extracted) and assimilation (TCA-extracted) was assessed. For all species at all temperatures, NO3 uptake/assimilation and assimilation rates decreased in a roughly exponential manner with increasing NH4 + concentrations but were not completely inhibited even at elevated NH4 + concentrations of 200 μM. Estimated half-inhibition concentrations (K i) were significantly greater in the diatom species (mean ± SE; 2.70 ± 0.67 μM) than in the dinoflagellate species (1.26 ± 0.55 μM). Half-inhibition constants were positively related to temperature-limited relative growth rate although not significantly. The observed inhibition of NO3 uptake and assimilation, as a percentage of NO3 uptake in the absence of NH4 +, averaged about 80% and ranged from 49 to 100%. For all species, a significant (P < 0.001) positive correlation was found between percent inhibition of NO3 assimilation and temperature-limited relative growth rate. Two experiments on Chesapeake Bay phytoplankton during an April 1998 diatom bloom showed that in short-term (∼1 h) temperature manipulation experiments, percent inhibition of NO3 uptake/assimilation was also positively related (P = 0.05) to experimental temperature. The observed relationships between temperature-limited relative growth rate and percent inhibition of NO3 assimilation rates for the species tested suggest that at the enzyme level, the inhibitory mechanism of NO3 assimilation is similar among species, but at the whole cell level may be regulated by species-specific differences in the accumulation of internal metabolites. These findings add not only to our understanding of species-specific variability and the role of growth temperature, but also provide additional data with which to evaluate current models of NH4 + and NO3 interactions.
