Abstract: Priority setting is an essential component of biodiversity conservation. Existing methods to identify priority areas for conservation have focused almost entirely on biological factors. We suggest a new relative ranking method for identifying priority conservation areas that integrates both biological and social aspects. It is based on the following criteria: the habitat's status, human population pressure, human efforts to protect habitat, and number of endemic plant and vertebrate species. We used this method to rank 25 hotspots, 17 megadiverse countries, and the hotspots within each megadiverse country. We used consistent, comprehensive, georeferenced, and multiband data sets and analytical remote sensing and geographic information system tools to quantify habitat status, human population pressure, and protection status. The ranking suggests that the Philippines, Atlantic Forest, Mediterranean Basin, Caribbean Islands, Caucasus, and Indo-Burma are the hottest hotspots and that China, the Philippines, and India are the hottest megadiverse countries. The great variation in terms of habitat, protected areas, and population pressure among the hotspots, the megadiverse countries, and the hotspots within the same country suggests the need for hotspot- and country-specific conservation policies. 相似文献

Abstract: Human population and development activities affect the rate of deforestation in biodiversity hotspots. We quantified the effect of human population growth and development on rates of deforestation and analyzed the relationship between these causal factors in the 1980s and 1990s. We compared the averages of population growth, human development index (HDI, which measures income, health, and education), and deforestation rate and computed correlations among these variables for countries that contain biodiversity hotspots. When population growth was high and HDI was low there was a high rate of deforestation, but when HDI was high, rate of deforestation was low, despite high population growth. The correlation among variables was significant for the 1990s but not for the 1980s. The relationship between population growth and HDI had a regional pattern that reflected the historical process of development. Based on the changes in HDI and deforestation rate over time, we identified two drivers of deforestation: policy choice and human-development constraints. Policy choices that disregard conservation may cause the loss of forests even in countries that are relatively developed. Lack of development in other countries, on the other hand, may increase the pressure on forests to meet the basic needs of the human population. Deforestation resulting from policy choices may be easier to fix than deforestation arising from human development constraints. To prevent deforestation in the countries that have such constraints, transfer of material and intellectual resources from developed countries may be needed. Popular interest in sustainable development in developed countries can facilitate the transfer of these resources. 相似文献

Abstract: The sustainable production of bioenergy is vital to avoiding negative impacts on environmental goods such as climate, soil, water, and especially biodiversity. We propose three key issues that should be addressed in any biodiversity risk‐mitigation strategy: conservation of areas of significant biodiversity value; mitigation of negative effects related to indirect land‐use change; and promotion of agricultural practices with few negative impacts on biodiversity. Focusing on biodiversity concerns, we compared principles and criteria set to address biodiversity and other environmental and social issues in seven standards (defined here as commodity‐based standards or roundtables, or relevant European legislation): five voluntary initiatives related to bioenergy feedstocks, the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (United Kingdom), and the European Renewable Energy Source Directive. Conservation of areas of significant biodiversity value was fairly well covered by these standards. Nevertheless, mitigation of negative impacts related to indirect land‐use change was underrepresented. Although the EU directive, with its bonus system for the use of degraded land and a subquota system for noncrop biofuels, offered the most robust standards to mitigate potential negative effects, all of the standards fell short in promoting agricultural practices with low negative impacts on biodiversity. We strongly recommend that each standard be benchmarked against related standards, as we have done here, and that efforts should be made to strengthen the elements that are weak or missing. This would be a significant step toward achieving a bioenergy industry that safeguards Earth's living heritage. 相似文献

Knowledge and Perceptions in Costa Rica Regarding Environment, Population, and Biodiversity Issues 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Public understanding of general environment- and population-related issues is critical for successful conservation efforts. We interviewed 300 residents of Costa Rica, distributed among three socioeconomic groups, to survey knowledge and perceptions about the environment. We focused on Costa Rica because it is an international model for sustainable development and because of its direct economic interest in biodiversity preservation for ecotourism. Our results indicate that Costa Ricans generally have a limited awareness of environment- and population-related problems. In all socioeconomic groups environmental problems were considered less important than various other problems, but 91% of respondents indicated a willingness to pay more for water or electricity if the extra money were used to protect biodiversity. Residents of San Jose's lower-class neighborhoods more strongly perceived the effects of population growth and environmental degradation than did residents of urban, upper-class, or rural neighborhoods. Of those interviewed, 69% thought the rate of population growth should decrease. Only 52% of those surveyed, however, perceived any link between population size or growth rate and environmental quality; of those, 33% could not describe the link. Our findings and others suggest a number of ways to enhance the effectiveness of environmental education programs worldwide: (1) include information on the relationship between population and environmental quality; (2) explain the socioeconomic implications of environmental degradation; (3) in addition to formal education, utilize the mass media more; (4) tailor messages to local circumstances. 相似文献

Global Warming, Human Population Pressure, and Viability of the World's Smallest Butterfly 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: The effects of climate change and habitat destruction and their interaction are likely to be the greatest challenge to animal and plant conservation in the twenty-first century. We used the world's smallest butterfly, the Sinai baton blue ( Pseudophilotes sinaicus ), as an exemplar of how global warming and human population pressures may act together to cause species extinctions. We mapped the entire global range of this butterfly and obtained extensive data on the intensity of livestock grazing. As with an increasing number of species, it is confined to a network of small habitat patches and is threatened both by indirect human-induced factors (global warming) and by the direct activities of humans (in this case, livestock grazing and collection of medicinal plants). In the absence of global warming, grazing, and plant collection, our model suggested that the butterfly will persist for at least 200 years. Above a threshold intensity of global warming, the chance of extinction accelerated rapidly, implying that there may be an annual average temperature, specific to each endangered species, above which extinction becomes very much more likely. By contrast, there was no such threshold of grazing pressure—the chance of extinction increased steadily with increasing grazing. The impact of grazing, however, decreased with higher levels of year-to-year variation in habitat quality. The effect of global warming did not depend on the future level of grazing, suggesting that the impacts of global warming and grazing are additive. If the areas of habitat patches individually fall below certain prescribed levels, the butterfly is likely to go extinct. Two patches were very important for persistence: if either were lost the species would probably go extinct. Our results have implications for the conservation management of all species whose habitats are at risk because of the direct activities of humans and in the longer term because of climate change. 相似文献

Marine aquaculture is facing a variety of competing uses in densely populated coastal areas such as the coast of Kiel Bay. Thus, a major barrier for extending the marine aquaculture business could be the lack of suitable space for “offshore farming”. Moreover, in public opinion the aquaculture sector is often associated with a negative image derived from environmental concerns. It might therefore be expected that planning aquaculture installations in Kiel Bay & Fjord would face resistance both from other offshore stakeholders and the public. This study therefore addressed the question whether arguments and criteria can be found that may contribute to a greater support and positive image of local aquaculture enterprise, thus fostering political support for this sector as well. Indeed, a widespread regional survey showed less public reservation towards aqua-cultural business in Kiel Fjord than initially expected. However, expanding the entrepreneurship in the regional aqua-cultural sector will only be successful if the installations can avoid a significant deterioration of the water quality in Kiel Fjord, e.g. through excessive emissions of nutrients from net cages. An important step forward toward this goal is the concept of IMTA = Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture. The IMTA concept spatially integrates nutrient emitting installations such as fish net cages with installations of nutrient extracting organisms, e.g. mussels and algae. Based on spatial analyses of marine environmental parameters and through modelling of nutrient mass balances (emitted versus extracted nutrient quantities) possible locations, types and sizes of aquaculture installations can be determined. 相似文献

The red porgy, Pagrus pagrus (L.), is a protogynous sparid associated with reefs and hard bottom habitat throughout the warm-temperate Atlantic Ocean.
In this study, the degree of geographic population differentiation in Atlantic populations was examined with microsatellite
and mitochondrial DNA markers (mtDNA). Six microsatellite loci were amplified and scored in 690 individuals from the eastern
North Atlantic (Crete, Madeira, and Azores), western North Atlantic (North Carolina to Florida, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico),
and Brazil. At two loci, fixed allelic differences were found among the three major geographic areas, while frequency differences
were observed at three other loci. The DNA of 371 individuals was amplified at the mtDNA control region, and 526 bp were sequenced.
Tamura–Nei’s D was used as a measure of nucleotide diversity and divergence: diversity averaged 0.011 within samples, while the corrected
divergence averaged 0 between samples within the same area and 0.061 between samples from different areas. Transversion haplotype
minimum spanning networks, nucleotide divergence, and F
ST values all show that the western Atlantic samples were more closely related to each other than any was to samples from the
eastern North Atlantic. Within the western North Atlantic, no significant population differentiation was observed, and within
the eastern North Atlantic, only the Azores sample showed detectable differences from Crete and Madeira. These data indicate
general homogeneity within large areas, and deep divisions between these areas.

Radon concentration was measured in water samples of 41 different locations from Udhampur district of Jammu & Kashmir, India, by using RAD7 and Smart RnDuo monitor. The variation of radon concentration in water ranged from 1.44 ± 0.31 to 63.64 ± 2.88 Bq L?1, with a mean value of 28.73 Bq L?1 using RAD7 and 0.64 ± 0.28 to 52.65 ± 2.50 Bq L?1, with a mean value of 20.30 Bq L?1 using Smart RnDuo monitor, respectively. About 17.07% of the studied water samples recorded to display elevated radon concentration above the reference range suggested by United Nation Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiations (UNSCEAR). The mean annual effective dose of these samples was determined, and 78.95% samples were found to be within the safe limits set by World Health Organisation (WHO) and European Council (EU). The study revealed good agreement between the values obtained with two methods. Heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Fe, Cu, Ni, As, Hg, Co, Pb and Cr) were determined in water samples by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometer, and their correlation with radon content was also analysed. 相似文献

The horned sea star (Protoreaster nodosus) is relatively common in the Indo-Pacific region, but there is little information about its biology. This study of the population
biology of P. nodosus was carried out in Davao Gulf, The Philippines (7°5′N, 125°45′E) between September 2006 and May 2008. Protoreaster nodosus was found in sand and seagrass dominated habitats at a mean density of 29 specimens per 100 m2 and a mean biomass of 7.4 kg per 100 m2, whereas a significantly lower density and biomass was found in coral and rock dominated habitats. Adult specimens (mean
radius R = 10.0 cm) were found at depths of 0–37 m, whereas juveniles (R < 8 cm) were only found in shallow sandy habitats with abundant seagrass (water depth ≤2 m). Increased gonad weights were
found from March to May (spawning period), which coincided with an increasing water temperature and a decreasing salinity.
Density and biomass did not change significantly during reproduction, but sea stars avoided intertidal habitats. All specimens
with R > 8 cm had well developed gonads and their sex ratio was 1:1. Protoreaster nodosus grew relatively slowly in an enclosure as described by the exponential function G = 7.433 e−0.257 × R
. Maturing specimens (R = 6–8 cm) were estimated to have an age of 2–3 years. Specimens with a radius of 10 cm (population mean) were calculated
to have an age of 5–6 years, while the maximum age (R = 14 cm) was estimated as 17 years. Potential effects of ornamental collection on the sea star populations are discussed.

The softshell clam, Mya arenaria, is a commercially important bivalve with wide latitudinal distribution in North America. Populations of clams with a history
of repeated exposure to toxic Alexandrium spp. have developed a natural resistance to the paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) produced by these algae. An association
between PST resistance in individual clams and a single mutation in the saxitoxin (STX) binding region of the α-subunit of
the voltage-gated sodium (Na+) channel gene was previously identified. Here we establish that more than one mutation associated with nerve resistance to
STX occurred at this locus. Both cDNA from mRNA and genomic DNA sequences from individual clams are identical demonstrating
that both alleles are expressed simultaneously. In addition, one resistant allele per individual is sufficient to confer neural
resistance to STX even though heterozygous individuals show an intermediate level of resistance to STX in in vitro nerve trunk
assays. 相似文献

An investigation to characterize the causes of Pinna nobilis population structure in Moraira bay (Western Mediterranean) was developed. Individuals of two areas of the same Posidonia meadow, located at different depths (A1, −13 and A2, −6 m), were inventoried, tagged, their positions accurately recorded
and monitored from July 1997 to July 2002. On each area, different aspects of population demography were studied (i.e. spatial
distribution, size structure, displacement evidences, mortality, growth and shell orientation). A comparison between both
groups of individuals was carried out, finding important differences between them. In A1, the individuals were more aggregated
and mean and maximum size were higher (A1, 10.3 and A2, 6 individuals/100 m2; A1, x = 47.2 ± 9.9; A2, x = 29.8 ± 7.4 cm, P < 0.001, respectively). In A2, growth rate and mortality were higher, the latter concentrated on the largest individuals,
in contrast to A1, where the smallest individuals had the higher mortality rate [A1, L = 56.03(1 − e−0.17t
); A2, L = 37.59(1 − e−0.40t
), P < 0.001; mean annual mortality A1: 32 dead individuals out of 135, 23.7% and A2: 16 dead individuals out of 36, 44.4%, and
total mortality coefficients (z), z
A1(−30) = 0.28, z
A1(31–45) = 0.05, z
A1(46−) = 0.08; z
A2(−30) = 0.15, z
A2(31–45) = 0.25]. A common shell orientation N–S, coincident with the maximum shore exposure, was observed in A2. Spatial distribution
in both areas showed not enough evidence to discard a random distribution of the individuals, despite the greater aggregation
on the deeper area (A1) (A1, χ
2 = 0.41, df = 3, P > 0.5, A2, χ
2 = 0.98, df = 2 and 0.3 < P < 0.5). The obtained results have demonstrated that the depth-related size segregation usually shown by P. nobilis is mainly caused by differences in mortality and growth among individuals located at different depths, rather than by the
active displacement of individuals previously reported in the literature. Furthermore, dwarf individuals are observed in shallower
levels and as a consequence, the relationship between size and age are not comparable even among groups of individuals inhabiting
the same meadow at different depths. The final causes of the differences on mortality and growth are also discussed. 相似文献

In the context of use of marine algae as biological indicators of heavy metal pollution in coastal waters, six species of marine algae collected from the southwest coast of India were analysed for the levels of heavy metals (Ni, Cr, Sr, and Ag). Interspecies and interclass variations were determined on a spatial and temporal scale. The metal contents varied in the ranges, Ni: 0.20–21.06?µg?g?1 (mean?=?10.13?µg?g?1), Cr: non-detectable level (ND)–37.18?µg?g?1 (mean?=?13.86?µg?g?1), Sr: 2.19–103.90?µg?g?1 (mean =?29.40?µg?g?1), and Ag: ND–6.39?µg?g?1 (mean?=?1.80?µg?g?1). Ni and Cr contents were of similar magnitude to those reported for algae from polluted areas. 相似文献

Previous studies on two reef fish lacking a pelagic larval phase (Acanthochromis polyacanthus and Embiotoca jacksoni) revealed features that may be characteristic of their lifestyle: (1) low levels of gene flow, (2) frequent population bottlenecks, and (3) strong phylogeographic breaks, all within their over 1,000 km coastal geographic ranges. The present study tested the predictive nature of these three characteristics in another species lacking a pelagic larval stage, but with a very restricted distribution (<10,000 km2). The Banggai cardinalfish, Pterapogon kauderni Koumans, 1933, is a mouthbrooding species occurring in the Banggai Archipelago (eastern Indonesia). Fish were captured in January and February (2001, 2002). The mitochondrial control region of 122 individuals from 22 locations was sequenced. P. kauderni individuals clustered in two reciprocally monophyletic clades corresponding to a southwestern population (restricted to the southwest of Bangkulu Island) and all northern and eastern populations, which included all the remaining samples. Data were compatible with reduced gene flow and the presence of severe bottlenecks; however, small sample sizes and limited genetic variability in P. kauderni prevented a definitive conclusion. Further studies using larger samples and more rapidly evolving molecular markers may provide enough power to conclusively test our hypotheses.Communicated by J.P. Grassle, New Brunswick 相似文献

Population dynamics of natural colonies of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Aurelia</Emphasis> sp. scyphistomae in Tasmania,Australia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of this study was to identify potential environmental controls of the asexual phases of reproduction by measuring
the rates of asexual reproduction (budding and strobilation) and mortality in naturally occurring populations of Aurelia sp. scyphistomae at different spatial and temporal scales. The percentage cover, density of colonies of Aurelia sp. scyphistomae, and density of the population of two naturally occurring colonies of Aurelia sp. scyphistomae were examined over 2 years in southern Tasmania. Artificial substrates were also deployed to investigate
colony dynamics when density dependent effects were reduced. Clear spatial and temporal differences in the population dynamics
of the colonies were observed. Density dependent effects controlled budding and recruitment of new scyphistomae to the substrate
when populations were dense and space limiting. In contrast, environmental controls of budding and strobilation were more
apparent in a colony with significantly greater area of bare substrate and hence room for expansion. Water temperature and
rainfall (as a proxy for salinity) were linked to changes in population size. Annual and seasonal differences in population
dynamics were not observed in a colony limited by space but were apparent in a colony where space was not limited. When space
was removed as a limiting factor by deploying artificial substrates, a seasonal environmental effect on the rate of growth
of the colony was observed. These studies suggest that the growth, survival and reproduction of the sessile colonial phase
of Aurelia sp. is regulated by a combination of density dependent factors and environmental conditions, which are consequently important
to the formation of jellyfish blooms. 相似文献

The milkfish, Chanos chanos (Forsskål, 1775) is a pelagic, monotypic gonorhynchiform widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific. This study evaluates temporal variability of milkfish samples from the Philippine archipelago, and spatial variability at two geographic scales based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of a portion of the mitochondrial control region. High levels of genetic diversity characterize the milkfish control region (mean h=0.908, =1.59%), with 74 haplotypes detected among the 367 fish analyzed. For temporal analysis of Philippine samples, milkfish were collected over 2 years from three sites (inter-annual variation), and sampled twice within a year during different seasons at four sites (intra-annual variation). No significant temporal variability was detected between or within years. Significant spatial differentiation among the Philippine samples was observed (FST=0.006, P<0.05), with two northeastern samples, Claveria and Dingalan, found to be genetically distinct. However, an hierarchical analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), where samples were grouped into four geographic regions, revealed very low levels of genetic partitioning, with less than 1% of the total variation attributed to between-region differences, and lack of genetic structure. Nonetheless, the existence of putative northeastern Philippine populations is not discounted. Strong genetic structure across broad geographical scales was revealed by AMOVA, with 11% of the molecular variance based on haplotype frequencies allocated between three distinct groups: Indian Ocean, west Pacific (Philippines) and north central Pacific (Hawaii) The broad-scale genetic structure points to limited gene flow among disjunct Indo-Pacific populations.Communicated by T. The wahoo, Acanthocybium solandri (Cuvier, 1832), is a pelagic, highly migratory, scombroid fish, distributed worldwide throughout tropical and warm temperate seas. To evaluate population genetic and phylogeographic structure against a null hypothesis of panmixia, the entire mitochondrial DNA control-region (~890 base pairs) was sequenced for 231 wahoo. Samples were collected from 1997 to 2001 from seven sites: North Carolina (NC; n=23), east central Florida (CF; n=30), Bimini, Bahamas (BB; n=40), southern tip of Florida (SF; n=21), Cayman Islands (CI; n=23), northern Gulf of Mexico (NG; n=54), and Hawaii (HI; n=40). Inter-annual samples were obtained from four of these locations (NC, BB, SF, NG). Seventeen haplotypes were shared by individuals within and among samples; 187 singleton haplotypes were observed. Within-sample haplotype diversities ranged from 0.995 to 1.000 (overall h=0.999) and within-sample nucleotide diversities ranged from 0.049 to 0.055 (overall =0.053). A neighbor-joining tree based on inter-haplotypic distances revealed two monophyletic lineages differing by 13.6% nucleotide divergence. Nested within each major lineage were several, well-supported subclades. There was no evidence of temporal heterogeneity in haplotype distributions. Partitioning mtDNA variation, 99.75% of the variance was within samples and 0.25% (P=0.307) between samples; the fixation index (ST=0.0025) was not significant. Likewise, pairwise ST values were low or negative, and none were significant on a table-wide basis. Exact tests for sample differentiation in haplotypes were also non-significant. All population analyses were consistent with the null hypothesis of panmixia. However, analytical power was limited by sample size. Mismatch distributions were inconsistent with expected distributions based on sudden-expansion and static-growth models. Wahoo exhibit concurrently high haplotype and nucleotide diversities, presumably a consequence of secondary contact between historical subpopulations rather than a long, stable evolutionary history. Given the level of geographic and individual sampling, wahoo thus far represent the sole example of a scombroid or xiphioid fish exhibiting coarse-grain genetic homogeneity across a broad, inter-oceanic range despite a deeply coalescing genealogical structure. Accordingly, cooperative fishery management on a broad, inter-ocean scale may be warranted.Communicated by J.P. Grassle, New Brunswick 相似文献

Numerous marine invertebrates form endosymbiotic relationships with dinoflagellates in the genus Symbiodinium. However, few studies have examined the fine-scale population structure of these symbionts. Here, we describe the genetic
structure of Symbiodinium type “B1/B184” inhabiting the gorgonian Gorgonia
ventalina along the Florida Keys. Six polymorphic microsatellite loci were utilized to examine 16 populations along the Upper, Middle,
and Lower Keys spanning a range of ~200 km. Multiple statistical tests detected significant differentiation in 54–92% of the
120 possible pairwise comparisons between localities, suggesting low levels of gene flow in these dinoflagellates. In general,
populations clustered by geographic region and/or reefs in close proximity. Some of the sharpest population differentiation
was detected between Symbiodinium from deep and shallow sites on the same reef. In spite of the high degree of population structure, alleles and genotypes
were shared among localities, indicating some connectivity between Symbiodinium populations associated with G. ventalina.
