Summary The mating systems of many species comprise at least 2 alternative male mating tactics — broadly termed Dominant and Satellite tactics here. But, there exists no satisfactory conceptual framework in which to explain their co-occurrence and persistence.A Dominant male's ability to copulate is a positive, but decelerating, function of either his territory's attractiveness or his own attractiveness to females. This Diminishing Returns Effect affords mating opportunities for Satellite males associated with the most attractive sites (or males). A graphical Satellite Threshold Model, analogous to the Polygyny Threshold Model (Orians 1969), is developed to predict quantitatively the presence or absence of Satellite male tactics.Five predictions of the Model are supported quantitatively by data from dragonfly and anuran social systems and, more generally, by evidence from a wide variety of species. The Model should apply both to circumstances in which males are able to alternate between tactics and the instances in which males make an irrevocable tactical decision.  相似文献

Summary Limitations on male capacity may be important to the evolution of mating strategies and behavior. Sperm counts in successive ejaculates of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) decreased progressively through six ejaculations and remained depressed the following day. Males were as effective in inseminating females in cycling estrus with their second two ejaculates as with their first two and as effective in inseminating postpartum females with their fifth as with their first. In sperm competition situations males competed with rested males as effectively with their fourth, fifth, and sixth ejaculates as with their first. Thus, although sperm counts decrease in successive ejaculates, males suffer no apparent functional deficiency as long as they continue ejaculating. It is not clear whether or not deer mice are honest salesmen but they appear to be honest ejaculators and usually are honest intromitters.  相似文献

Costs and consequences of variation in the size of ruff leks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary We studied 13 ruff leks in a small region on the island of Gotland (Sweden) to investigate the effect of lek size on the costs and benefits of lekking for individual males. Male ruffs occur in two behaviourally and morphologically distinct forms, independents (residents plus marginals) and satellites, whose costs and benefits we have assessed separately. These ruff leks had from 1–10 resident (territory-holding) males and were visited daily by satellites, marginals and females from 5–25 May, when most copulations occurred. We used the average number of independent males, counted during censuses taken every 5 min during 2-h observation periods at each lek, as an index of mean lek size. Per independent male, the numbers of both satellites and females increased significantly with mean lek size. Female arrival rate and attendance (total female-minutes) also increased significantly with mean lek size as did the average per capita rate of mating success for resident males (that of satellites was not quite significant). Thus, the dispersion of both of these male categories did not appear to fit an ideal free distribution with respect to mating success. In addition, the number of independent-independent fights per independent and the rate of satellite-resident dyad formation per resident increased significantly with mean lek size. These results suggest that ruffs on larger leks enjoy higher mating success than those on smaller leks but also that costs increase with lek size. We suggest that independent males distribute themselves so as to maximize their own net benefits and that this factor can account for both the occurrence of ruff leks and the variation in their size. Summary Whirligig beetles aggregate in the daytime into dense single-and multispecies groups (rafts) of hundreds or thousands of individuals. On the 22km shoreline of Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota, these aggregations were on the average 0.8 km apart, and they were usually found day after day in the same ocations. Most beetles apparently do not home to the aggregation of their origin after dispersing at night because (a) the species composition of some aggregations changed greatly, and (b) paint-marked beetles (Dineutus horni) moved overnight from one aggregation as far as 4km, joining 11 of the 14 large (>300 beetles) D. horni groups on the lake.Throughout the night, the largest concentrations of beetles remained within 100m of the diurnal aggregation sites. Beetles reconvened into the compact rafts before daybreak, in part by following each other in sometimes long single files or trains. Their forward motion stopped after they joined large number of other beetles. We infer that following behavior enables those individuals that have dispersed from their original aggregations (during their nocturnal foraging) to find and join other aggregations before daylight.Naive fish ate the beetles despite their noxious secretions. However, fish living near rafting sites and feeding on insects on the water surface in daylight should soon learn to avoid the beetles. The rafting sites would then become safe places. We observed fish attacking only those beetles that had been either dispersed from their rafts or released into open water away from raft sites in the daytime. We speculate that the evolutionary significance of the aggregation behavior is related to predator (fish) avoidance.  相似文献

Summary In many insects nutrients transferred by the male to the female at mating are later incorporated into both the eggs and soma of the mated females. Accordingly, it has been suggested that female insects can use these male-derived nutrients both for somatic maintenance and to increase both the number and quality of their offspring. Moreover, much discussion is presently devoted to whether the male nuptial gift represents paternal investment, defined as any increase in given male's total surviving progeny by increasing the reproductive output by a given female, or mating effort which obtains if a male gains by increasing the proportion of eggs he fertilizes from a given female (Parker and Simmons 1989). If the male nuptial gift represents parental investment it should be expected to benefit predominantly the offspring sired by the donor, whereas the physiological fate of the male nuptial gift is somewhat irrelevant under the mating effort explanation. In this paper we test these issues by studying the lifetime fecundity, egg weights and longevity of two groups of females of the polyandrous green-veined white butterfly, Pieris napi, one group of which was allowed to mate only once and the other of which was allowed to mate at liberty, the latter group of females mating on average 2.28 times. Moreover, to test the incorporation rate of male-derived nutrients, we performed a second set of experiments where females were allowed to mate with radioactively labelled males. The results showed that polyandrous females had higher lifetime fecundity compared to monandrous females, laying on average 1.61 as many eggs, and that the difference in cumulative fecundity between the two groups was statistically significant from the 5th day of egg-laying onwards. Polyandrous females also lived longer and maintained egg weight at a high level for longer than monandrous females. Largely concomitant with egg-laying rate, incorporation rate of male-derived nutrients peaked 3–4 days after mating, subsequently tapering off to stabilize at about 40% of the maximum. Given the opportunity, female P. napi remated after 3–5 days, the duration of the refractory period being positively correlated with ejaculate mass. Hence, although the nutrient investment of the first male to mate with a female subsidizes the progeny of later-mating males, the male nuptial gift in P. napi clearly qualifies as both paternal investment and mating effort. Deep-water royal red prawns (Haliporoides sibogae de Man, 1907; Solenoceridae: Penaeidea) were sampled from commercial catches off south-east Australia between November 1988 and May 1990. Four stages of sexual development were distinguished macroscopically for each sex. For the females, histology and analysis of oocyte size were used to validate the macroscopic staging of ovaries into undeveloped, developing, early ripe and ripe. Females were larger than males, reaching a maximum size of 46 mm carapace length (CL) compared to 32 mm CL for males. Average size at sexual maturity was 30.8 mm CL for females and 25.8 mm CL for males. Females apparently breed several times in their life, whereas males probably breed only once. Individual fecundity (ranging from about 58 000 to 140 000 oocytes) was relatively low compared with other penaeids, but oocytes were larger (mean diameter=0.41 mm). Two short breeding seasons occurred per year (February to April and July to August). There was a clear size-related latitudinal distribution of the prawns, with largr prawns (spawners) being more abundant in the northern region of the fishing area, and juveniles (CL20 mm) being more abundant in the south. Most of the spawning stock probably lies outside the main fishing ground, while the fishery targets mainly prawns below the size at maturity.  相似文献

Primary production in Dumbell Bay in the Arctic Ocean   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Photosynthesis, chlorophyll, inorganic nutrients, and related factors were measured throughout a productive season in a small coastal inlet of the Arctic Ocean. Significant production was confined to 5 m for a very limited time period beacause of both light and nutrient limitations. Maximum chlorophyll was 8.2 mg Chl a m-3 and maximum gross and net photosynthesis rates were 830 and 550 mg C m-2 d-1. Annual gross and net photosynthesis is estimated at about 12 and 9 g C m-2 respectively. The effect of light stimulation on assimilation is described, sources of coastal zone nutrient enrichment are considered, and discrepancies between gross and net photosynthesis are discussed with reference to the growth characteristics of the phytoplankton population.Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Summary We used sequential removal experiments to test whether the resource-holding potential (RHP) of territory owner red-winged blackbirds, Agelaius phoeniceus, was superior to that of their first replacements (shallow floaters) and subsequent replacements (deep floaters). Among the removals were secondyear males, which were morphologically inferior to adults and which also tended to be competitively inferior in aviary contests. The highest proportion of secondyear males occurred in the deep floater class. Thus, the RHP of some deep floaters was inferior to that of owners and shallow floaters. However, among adults, owners, shallow floaters, and deep floaters had equivalent morphological and competitive RHP. Furthermore, replacement males that had defended territories for many days were neither morphologically nor competitively superior to males that had defended territories for only a few days. Our results suggest that RHP distinguishes adults from second-year males, but does not separate owners from floaters. The only hypothesis that is potentially supported by our observations is that owners have a greater expected payoff from their territory than intruders, and in this way owners are able to maintain site dominance. The nature of that payoff remains to be determined. Offprint requests to: P.J. Weatherhead  相似文献

Brown and cherry colour morphs of the heteronemertean Lineus torquatus Coe, 1901 from the Vostok Bay of the Sea of Japan were compared using allele frequencies at 18 isozyme loci. These morphs shared no common alleles at 9 of the 18 loci. The observed genetic differences are strong evidence that the brown and cherry colour morphs, which occur sympatrically, are different species. Nei's genetic distance between these species (D=1.135) is considerably higher than typical D values for congeneric animal species. As with much previous work on nemerteans, intraspecific allozymic variability in both species was high, with mean expected heterozygosity values 0.286±0.049 and 0.159±0.051 for L. torquatus (brown) and L. torquatus (cherry) species, respectively.  相似文献

Summary Male ruffs (Philomachus pugnax), a lekking shorebird, can generally be divided into two morphs according to behavior and plumage coloration. Predominantly dark-colored, independent male ruffs defend small territories on a lek, whereas lighter colored satellite males are non-territorial and less site-faithful to a particular lek. The traits associated with the mating success of independent male ruffs were studied at two leks during two seasons on the island of Öland, Sweden in May and June of 1985 and 1987. Using multivariate analyses, three characteristics were found to be significantly related to mating success: high frequency of visits by satellites to an independent male's residence, consistency of lek attendance, and low rates of aggressive behavior. In contrast, mating success was unrelated to the degree of darkness of the independent male nuptial plumage, territory location on the lek, or rate of courtship displays. The use of multivariate analyses helped to resolve conflicting conclusions from previous studies which employed simple statistical analyses, or none at all. Experimental manipulations are suggested which will help to further determine the influence of female mate choice in this lekking system.  相似文献

Patterns of phytoplankton carbon (C) metabolism were examined in å combined laboratory and field study to assess the influence of light conditions on 14C assimilation into photosynthetic end-products. Laboratory studies with three species representing distinct size classes and taxonomic groups tested the influence of low light on patterns of C flow. Prorocentrum mariae-lebouriae (dinoflagellate) and Ditylum brightwellii (diatom) showed decreased movement of photoassimilated 14C into protein following a shift to low light 14C assimilation into lipids and photosynthetic pigments increased in low light and was paralleled by increased chl a per cell. The proportion of 14C fixed into protein returned to the pre-shift level upon return to initial light conditions. Monochrysis lutheri (chrysophyte) did not show this pattern of reduced % 14C protein. Incubations of 12 and 24 h demonstrated significant rearrangements in labeling patterns at night, wherein 14C flow into protein in darkness was favored. % 14C protein at night was lower for M. lutheri than for the other species, suggesting some interspecific differences in the low light response. Measurements of 14C assimilation in phytoplankton assemblages from Chesapeake Bay demonstrated movement of a higher proportion of photo-assimilated C into protein in samples collected in the surface mixed layer than in those below the pycnocline. In comparison, phytoplankton collected below the pycnocline fixed a higher proportion of 14C into lipids, photosynthetic pigments, and low molecular weight metabolites, as was observed in low light laboratory cultures. A comparison of 12- and 24-h incubations for measuring patterns of C flow into photosynthetic end-products confirmed the inadequacy of short-term measurements, as significant changes in 14C allocation occurred in the dark phase of the photocycle. Together, these results suggest that 14C assimilation into photosynthetic end-products can be a useful measure of adaptive state in changing light conditions, but point out some difficulties in applying this approach in situ.  相似文献

Surface soils (0–15 cm) were sampled at 10–20 km intervals along two transects in Venezuela. One (1162 km, 70 samples) ran west to east parallel with the Caribbean coastline, the other (920 km, 92 samples) ran south to north from the frontier with Brazil to the Caribbean shore. Sampling took place in both a wet and a dry season. Trace metals were extracted from dried, sieved (<2 mm) soil with boiling aqua regia followed by analysis by ICP or flame AAS. Metal values did not differ significantly between the two seasons and dates were averaged. Geometric mean values for the west–east transect were: Cr=41.5, Cu 17.9, Cs 3.6, Li=13.9, Mn=294, Ni=21.3, Pb=17.4, Sr=39.4, V=60.4 and Zn = 83.7g g–1, respectively. Similarly, for the south–north transect Cr=21.3, Cu=4.3, Cs=1.1, Li=2.0, Mn=55.7, Ni=4.4, Pb=6.1, Sr=13.3, V=28.2 and Zn=16.7g g–1, respectively. A classification of samples by lithology showed surface soil composition to be related to rock composition. Metal values were low in the soils in the south of the country, in the Guyana highlands (Gran Sabana). Low Zn contents were prevalent. Lead contents were affected by roadside fallout from vehicles using leaded petrol except that high Pb contents of soils in the Gran Sabana were of more complex origin.  相似文献

Summary All natural populations studied of the seaweed fly, Coelopa frigida, are polymorphic for the inversion system on chromosome I. It has previously been shown that heterokaryotypes have superior egg-to-adult survival than either homokaryotype, and that there is non-random mating with respect to inversion genotypes. We have inquired whether the production of fitter progeny in larger numbers is the possible reason for the existence of non-random mating behaviour. We measured the fertility, fecundity and progeny survival of adults that have either been allowed to exercise mate preference, or been given a single, randomly chosen, mate. The fertility (% of females producing progeny) and progeny survival (% of larvae surviving to the late 3rd instar stage) are both significantly greater in choice than nochoice females. There are also significant differences in fertility and progeny survival depending on whether the parents were of similar or dissimilar inversion genotypes. An effect of relative adult size on fertility was also observed. There appear to be no effects of mate choice on fecundity. Indirect evidence is presented that adults are choosing their mates not only on the basis of genotypes but on other criteria as well. It is suggested that the superior reproductive performance of animals allowed a choice of mates may account for the evolutionary origin and continued existence of mate discrimination. Furthermore, since over 25% of the genome of Coelopa is located within inversions, the observed pattern of negative assortative mating may maintain a substantial fraction of the genes in a polymorphic state.  相似文献

Tigriopus brevicornis (O. F. Müller) were collected in 1992 from rock pools close to U.M.B.S. Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, U.K. and acclimated to various combinations of salinity and temperature for at least 1 wk prior to laboratory experiments. Higher salinities of acclimation enhanced tolerance to high salinity stress, while tolerance of low salinities was hardly affected by acclimation salinity. Acclimation to low temperature (10°C) extended the survivable salinity range for T. brevicornis. High-salinity acclimation enhanced the survivable temperature range. Copepods acclimated to 60 survived significantly lower and higher temperatures than did 34-acclimated individuals. At high temperature, 75-acclimated female copepods had the highest median lethal temperature, 38.9°C. Females were significantly more resistant to high temperatures than males. The copepods were seen to have a very low median lethal temperature when frozen into solid ice for 2 h; 50% mortality occurred at-16.9°C in 10°C, 34-acclimated T. brevicornis. Salinity preference experiments demonstrated an ability to discriminate between salinities differing by as little as 3. Copepods acclimated to 34 chose salinities near their acclimation salinity; individuals acclimated to 5 favoured slightly higher salinities, while copepods acclimated to 60 chose rather lower salinities.  相似文献

The sexy son hypothesis suggests that females obtain future fitness benefits from mating with polygynous males through the inheritance by their sons of traits contributing to mating success. We tested this hypothesis in the facultatively polygynous European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in two ways. We first compared sons of monogynous and polygynous free-living males for their abilities in nest site acquisition and female-directed behaviors in controlled aviary tests. We then investigated eggs laid in monogynous and polygynous matings for concentrations of maternal steroid hormones that could affect behavioral differentiation of sons. Sons of polygynous fathers defended more nest boxes and produced more courtship song than sons of monogynous fathers. Mean concentrations of maternal androstenedione (A4), 5-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), testosterone (T), and 17-estradiol (E) in yolks were not affected by mating status. However, the within-clutch pattern of A4 depended on mating status, with higher concentrations in last than in first eggs of clutches of monogynous but not polygynous matings. These results suggest that (1) sons may inherit from their fathers behavioral qualities for the successful acquisition of nest sites and attraction of mates; (2) differential exposure to maternal steroid hormones during development in the egg is unlikely the cause of the behavioral differences between adult sons of monogynous and polygynous fathers; and (3) females adjust the within-clutch pattern of androgen to mating status, possibly in response to the expected contribution of their mate to nestling care.  相似文献

Summary The swordtail Xiphophorus nigrensis exhibits three relatively discrete male body-size classes that derive from allelic variation at the Y-linked pituitary (P) locus. Previous studies have shown that larger males have greater relative reproductive success, and that females prefer large males. We describe the mating behavior utilized by males of each size class during individual encounters with females. Small males rely on chase behavior, similar to the alternative mating behavior classified as sneaker in small males of other species. Large males court and intermediate-sized males court or chase, depending on their body size. There is a strong correlation between P alleles for small size (s) and large size (L) with chasing and courting, respectively. The relationship between mating behavior of males of the genotype I is ambiguous. In the closely related species X. pygmaeus, males are of size similar to smaller X. nigrensis males. Paradoxically, these males do not show the courtship display that typifies larger male X. nigrensis and many other species of swordtails, but instead often employ chase behavior identical to the alternative mating behavior in small male X. nigrensis. We suggest that historical and genetic constraints, in addition to current selection forces, might be important factors in explaining the existence of alternative mating behavior in X. pygmaeus.  相似文献

Soil and water samples were collected from the Susaki area of Korinthos and analysed for heavy metals in order to evaluate their environmental impact. The geology of the studied area includes ultrabasic rocks and Neogene and Quaternary deposits whereas magnesite veins are found within the ultrabasic rocks. In the north part of the studied area post volcanic emissions of H2S, CO2 and H2O vapor continue to the present day. All the samples were analysed for heavy metals by the ICP method. The element ranges (in g g–1) for soil samples are: Cu 11–63, Pb 5–256, Zn 21–604, Ni 183–2665, Co 12–124, Mn 456–1434, As 5–104, Sr 44–730, V 21–84, Cr 163–2346, Ba 48–218, Zr 3–41, Y 3–13. The metals Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Fe, Cu, Mn, As and Sr are enriched in the Susaki soils. The element ranges for water samples are: Cu 65–103ppb, Pb<10ppb, Zn<5ppb, Ni 21–163ppb, Co 2–12ppb, As<30ppb, Cr<20ppb, Ba 36–785ppb, Sb<10ppb, W<10ppb, Bi<30ppb, Mn 0.0–0.9 g g–1, Fe 0.01–0.22 g g–1, Na 843–3076 g g–1, K 98–278 g g–1, Si 39–65 g g–1, P 0.1–0.2 g g–1. There is a natural pollution of soils with elevated concentrations of Ni, Co, Mn, Fe and Cr due to the presence of ultrabasic rocks. Another natural case of As pollution of soils is due to the volcanic activity and the geothermal field in the area. The geochemical data of ground waters and also the 18, D data showed a mixing in different proportions between sea water and meteoric water.  相似文献

Energy budgets were determined for small pieces (nubbins) of the coralsPocillopora damicornis, Montipora verrucosa andPorites lobata living at a water depth of 3 m on the fringing reef of Coconut Island, Kaneohe, Hawaii. The budgets were determined for three different types of day: an ideal day with no cloud and an in situ daily integrated irradiance at 3 m of 14.385 E m–2 d–1; a normal day with sporadic cloud cover and daily irradiance of 11.915 E m–2 d–1; and an overcast day with daily irradiance of 6.128 E m–2 d–1. On the ideal day, the energy fixed in photosynthesis was more than that required for respiration and growth of both zooxanthellae and animal components of the association, and there was a predicted loss of between 19.3 and 32.4% of the energy fixed. On a normal day, the total photosynthetic energy fixation was lower and the excess was between 12.1 and 27.9% of the energy fixed. On the overcast day, however, in bothPocillopora damicornis andPorites lobata energy expenditure exceeded photosynthetic energy fixation and the budget was in deficit. Estimates of rate of mucus secretion on an overcast day were derived and, when incorporated into the energy budget, it was predicted that all three species would have a deficit budget, necessitating the catabolism of lipid reserves. From published values for lipid storage in these species it was calculated that the reserves would last from 28 d inPocillopora damicornis to 114 d inM. verrucosa. A model is suggested in which corals draw upon their extensive lipid stores on days of sub-optimal light, replenishing the reserves again when daily light levels are high, and finally excreting the excess energy fixed, as mucus-lipid when the lipid stores are replete.  相似文献

The spawning cycles of the sibling species Cerastoderma edule (L.) and C. lamarcki (Reeve) were studied in allopatric and sympatric Danish populations from 1978–1980. The results do not support earlier findings of reproductive character displacement in sympatric populations of the two species. New records of hybrid formation and intermediate forms are presented and discussed.  相似文献

In our field study we analyzed the C and H isotopic and biochemical (C, N, P, protein, lipid, carbohydrate) composition of the jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (collected from the Gulf of Trieste in 1985 to 1986) and its presumed diet-net zooplankton. The mean 13C (-18.8) and D (-58.4) ratios of P. noctiluca showed enrichment in heavy isotopes relative to net zooplankton (2 for carbon and 30 for hydrogen). Both the jellyfish and net zooplankton were characterized by a linear correlation between 13C and D. C. N, P, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate contents of P. noctiluca were low on a dry weight basis as compared to net zooplankton. Significantly lower C:N and C:P ratios were found in jellyfish indicating a greater loss of carbon relative to nitrogen and phosphorus along the passage to a higher trophic level. Isotopic and biochemical evidence indicate that, though collected in nearshore waters, P. noctiluca depended on autochthonous marine organic matter.  相似文献
