Fly ash (FA) and vinasse (VN), two industrial wastes, are generated in huge amounts and cause serious hazards to the environment. In this experiment, different proportions of these two wastes were used as food for two epigeic earthworms (Eisenia fetida and Eudrilus eugeniae) to standardize the recycling technique of these two wastes and to study their effect on fungal especially cellulolytic fungal population, cellulase activity and their isozyme pattern, chitin content and microbial biomass of waste mixture during vermicomposting. Increasing VN proportion from 25% to 50% or even higher, counts of both fungi and cellulolytic fungi in waste mixtures were significantly (P ? 0.05) increased during vermicomposting. Higher cellulase activity in treatments having 50% or more vinasse might be attributed to the significantly (P ? 0.05) higher concentration of group I isozyme while concentrations of other isozymes (group II and III) of cellulase were statistically at par. Higher chitin content in vinasse-enriched treatments suggested that fungal biomass and fungi-to-microbial biomass ratio in these treatments were also increased due to vermicomposting. Results revealed that Eudrilus eugeniae and Eisenia fetida had comparable effect on FA and VN mixture during vermicomposting. Periodical analysis of above-mentioned biochemical and microbial properties and nutrient content of final vermicompost samples indicated that equal proportion (1:1, w/w) of FA and VN is probably the optimum composition to obtain best quality vermicompost.  相似文献

The physical and chemical properties of crude oils differ greatly, and these properties change significantly once oil is spilled into the marine environment as a result of a number of weathering processes. Quantitative information on the weathering of spilled crude is a fundamental requirement for a fuller understanding of the fate and behaviour of oil in the environment. Additionally, such data are also essential for estimating windows-of-opportunities, where specific response methods, technologies, equipment or products are most effective in clean-up operations. In this study, the effects of a relatively low toxicity compound, biodiesel (rape seed oil methyl ester) on the rate of removal and weathering characteristics of crude oil within artificial sand columns are thoroughly investigated using GC/MS techniques. In the absence of the biodiesel, the crude oil exhibits low mobility and a slow rate of microbial degradation within the sediment and as a result, a high degree of persistance. Brent crude oil was subject to a progressive loss of the low molecular weight n-alkanes with respect to time through evaporation and a preferential migration of these fractions through the sediment to depth. The addition of the biodiesel led to greater recovery of oil from the sediment if applied to relatively unweathered crude oil. This was as the result of the crude oil dissolving within the more mobile biodiesel. The negligible concentration of the n-C10 to n-C21 fraction in surface sediment samples suggests a greater solubility of these fractions within the biodiesel and that their subsequent adsorption onto subsurface sediment particles was responsible for their absence from water flushed through the sands. These results suggest that biodiesel may have an active role in the beach clean-up of spilt crude oil.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to determine the composition and production rate of dental solid waste, produced by dental practices in the Prefecture of Xanthi, a multicultural area in Northeast Greece with a population of 102,000. For the study, 22 private dental practices and 1 public dental practice were selected of the 48 private and 5 public dental practices in operation. The 22 private dental practices included 16 owned by Christian Greek-born dentists, 3 by Moslem dentists and 3 by Christian dentists repatriated from the former Soviet Union. Differentiation on the basis of religion is directly related to the countries from which dentists received their training, e.g., Greece-European Union, Turkey and former Soviet Union. Thus, including the one public dental practice, 4 study groups were considered. Waste collection took place for 22 working days, from 20 May to 27 June 2002. This period was considered to be a representative one for a semi-rural area, such as Xanthi. Dentists were instructed to collect the total amount of waste they produced. A total of 260 kg dental solid waste was collected during the study period and was manually separated. Dental solid waste was classified in three main categories: (1) Infectious and potentially infectious waste, accounting for 94.7% by weight. (2) Non-infectious waste accounting for 2.0%. (3) Domestic-type waste, accounting for 3.3% by weight. The category of infectious waste is classified as hazardous and includes components containing metal (8.51%), components without metal (91.18%) and amalgam (0.33%). Using the weight data, the production rate of dental solid waste for the study period in the Prefecture of Xanthi was determined to be 513 g/practice/day and of infectious and potentially infectious waste 486 g/practice/day. The latter includes the production rate of sharps (9.8 g/practice/day), non-sharps (31.6), infectious waste without metal (443) and amalgam (1.6 g/practice/day). Since dental solid waste is currently disposed of in landfills together with the municipal solid waste, the results of the study were used to suggest an appropriate management scheme. The results were also used to compare the composition and production rates of dental solid waste produced by the 4 study groups.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of rumen fluid and leachate-based media on the ability of rumen and anaerobic digester derived microorganisms to degrade cellulose. The results demonstrated that rumen microorganisms are not capable of solubilising cellulose, or generating biomass, at an optimal rate when grown in leachate-based media when compared to the rates achieved when grown in rumen-based media. In contrast, the rate of biomass generation and cellulose solubilisation by digester microorganisms was not strongly affected by a change in media type. Several authors have theorised that cellulose degradation rates in anaerobic digesters can be increased by inoculation with rumen-derived microorganisms. The results from this study show that this approach is unlikely to be successful, because the rumen microorganisms would likely be unable to solubilise and out-compete native solid waste microorganisms for the cellulose in a foreign (leachate based) medium.  相似文献
