Acrylonitrile–Butadiene–Styrene (ABS), Polycarbonate (PC) and their alloys are widely used in automotive industry, computer and equipment housings. With increasing disposal of end-of-life electronic equipment, there is also an increased demand for recycling of these materials so that they do not pose environmental challenge as solid waste. One of the recycling approaches is mechanical recycling of these thermoplastics where recycled plastic is melt blended with virgin materials to obtain a high quality product. Besides obtaining desirable mechanical properties, such blends should also conform to fire safety standards. In this work, a series of blends were prepared using PC and ABS recovered from discarded computers and virgin materials using a twin-screw extruder. Their flammability properties were evaluated using burner flammability tests and Ohio State University (OSU) release rate tests. It was found that the extinguishing time, burning extent and weight loss appears to progressively decrease with the addition of both virgin or recycled PC to virgin or recycled ABS. It was also seen that the addition of the 70% of PC, virgin or recycled, to ABS virgin or recycled, appears to significantly decrease heat release and smoke evolution. The results of this study indicate that recycled polycarbonate can be used as an additive for virgin or recycled ABS, as a means of giving flame resistance to ABS in high-value applications. This result is significant when related to the result obtained by a separate study indicating that up to 25% of recycled material can be used without degradation of mechanical properties in the presence of 15% short glass fiber reinforcement.  相似文献

A new physical method, namely boiling treatment, was developed to aid flotation separation of acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) and polystyrene (PS) plastics. Boiling treatment was shown to be effective in producing a hydrophilic surface on ABS plastic. Fourier Transform Infrared analysis was conducted to investigate the mechanism of boiling treatment of ABS. Surface rearrangement of polymer may be responsible for surface change of boiling treated ABS, and the selective influence of boiling treatment on the floatability of boiling treated plastics may be attributed to the difference in the molecular mobility of polymer chains. The effects of flotation time, frother concentration and particle size on flotation behavior of simple plastic were investigated. Based on flotation behavior of simple plastic, flotation separation of boiling treatment ABS and PS with different particle sizes was achieved efficiently. The purity of ABS and PS was up to 99.78% and 95.80%, respectively; the recovery of ABS and PS was up to 95.81% and 99.82%, respectively. Boiling treatment promotes the industrial application of plastics flotation and facilitates plastic recycling.  相似文献

The world’s plastic consumption has increased incredibly in recent decades, generating more and more plastic waste, which makes it a great public concern. Recycling is the best treatment for plastic waste since it cannot only reduce the waste but also reduce the consumption of oil for producing new virgin plastic. Mechanical recycling is recommended for plastic waste to avoid the loss of its virgin value. As a mechanical separation technology, triboelectrostatic separation utilizes the difference between surface properties of different materials to get them oppositely charged, deflected in the electric field and separately collected. It has advantages such as high efficiency, low cost, no concern of water disposal or secondary pollution and a relatively wide processing range of particle size especially suitable for the granular plastic waste. The process of triboelectrostatic separation for plastic waste is reviewed in this paper. Different devices have been developed and proven to be effective for separation of plastic waste. The influence factors are also discussed. It can be concluded that the triboelectrostatic separation of plastic waste is a promising technology. However, more research is required before it can be widely applied in industry.  相似文献

Due to depletion of natural resources and increasing greenhouse emissions, new technologies for the transformation of waste polymers into valuable materials represent one of our greatest current needs. Acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene terpolymer (ABS) is one of the most widely used engineering plastics and is used as outer casing for electronic equipment. Nitrile rubber (NBR) is used in many applications that demand oil resistance. In an attempt to explore whether these materials can be successfully recycled, we prepared blends of scrap computer plastics (SCP) based on ABS with NBR and waste NBR powder (w-NBR), and investigated their mechanical properties and recyclability. Specifically, we assessed the effect of dynamic vulcanization and replacement of virgin NBR with w-NBR on the properties of 60/40, 70/30, and 80/20 NBR/SCP blends. These blends exhibited thermoplastic elastomeric behavior. The thermoplastic elastomeric blends showed excellent swelling resistance to standard lubricant oil (namely, IRM 903 oil).  相似文献

Biodegradable nanocomposites comprising of biodegradable polymers and bioactive organically modified layered silicates commonly reveal extremely enhanced mechanical and various other properties when compared to those of virgin polymers. This work was undertaken with a view to preparation of polymer bionanocomposites consisting of biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and organo-nanoclay. Cloisite Na+ and ammonium salt of l-isoleucine amino acid was used for the preparation of the novel chiral organo-nanoclay via an intercalation reaction in an aqueous solution. PVA/organo-nanoclay bionanocomposites of various compositions were created through the solution intercalation method by ultrasound-assisted technique. The resulting novel materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV/vis spectroscopy were applied to test the properties of PVA bionanocomposites. TGA indicate that the thermal stability is enhanced distinctly, without a sacrifice in optical clarity. The improvement of thermal properties was attributed to the homogeneous and good dispersion of organo-nanoclay in polymeric matrix and the strong hydrogen bonding between O?CH groups of PVA and the oxygen atoms of silicate layers or carbonyl group as well as OH group of intercalated amino acid. The morphology of the organo-nanoclay and PVA bionanocomposites was examined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Uniform distribution of clay due to intimate interaction between clay and polymer appears to be the cause for improved properties.  相似文献

A holistic environmentally sound waste management scheme that transforms agricultural plastic waste (APW) streams into labelled guaranteed quality commodities freely traded in open market has been developed by the European research project LabelAgriWaste. The APW quality is defined by the APW material requirements, translated to technical specifications, for recycling or energy recovery. The present work investigates the characteristics of the APW quality and the key factors affecting it from the introduction of the virgin product to the market to the APW stream reaching the disposer. Samples of APW from different countries were traced from their application to the field through their storage phase and transportation to the final destination. The test results showed that the majority of APW retained their mechanical properties after their use preserving a "very good quality" for recycling in terms of degradation. The degree of soil contamination concerning the APW recycling and energy recovery potential fluctuates depending on the agricultural plastic category and application. The chlorine and heavy metal content of the tested APW materials was much lower than the maximum acceptable limits for their potential use in cement industries.  相似文献

The incorporation of antimicrobial metals such as silver is an alternative to protect the material against microbial attack. However, loaded polymer can lose its antimicrobial properties after some time of use, and the additive may even leak out into the environment becoming harmful to non-target organisms. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity of silver containing thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) samples exposed to weathering and the influence of additive incorporation in material biodegradation in the soil. For this purpose, silver ions (Ag+_bentonite, Ag+_phosphate) and silver nanoparticles (AgNp_silica) based additives were blended in a formulation of SEBS, polypropylene and mineral oil. The test samples were exposed to natural ageing over nine months, and were then evaluated according to their mechanical properties, antimicrobial activity, and degree of crystallinity and surface characteristics. The biodegradation process before and after natural ageing was evaluated through the generation of carbon dioxide. The results show that the action of natural ageing reduced the mechanical properties of loaded and unloaded TPE, and modified the degree of crystallinity and the chemical characteristic of the TPE surface. The presence or type of additive did not influence material resistance after being exposed to weathering. A decrease in antimicrobial activity in samples after natural ageing was observed. At a variable level and according to the chemical content, generation of carbon dioxide from TPE samples was greater in aged samples than in unexposed ones.  相似文献

Plastic packaging wastes increased considerably in recent decades, raising a major and serious public concern on political, economical and environmental levels. Dealing with this kind of problems is generally done by landfilling and energy recovery. However, these two methods are becoming more and more expensive, hazardous to the public health and the environment. Therefore, recycling is gaining worldwide consideration as a solution to decrease the growing volume of plastic packaging wastes and simultaneously reduce the consumption of oil required to produce virgin resin. Nevertheless, a major shortage is encountered in recycling which is related to the sorting of plastic wastes. In this paper, a feasibility study was performed in order to test the potential of an innovative approach combining mid infrared (MIR) spectroscopy with independent components analysis (ICA), as a simple and fast approach which could achieve high separation rates. This approach (MIR-ICA) gave 100% discrimination rates in the separation of all studied plastics: polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polylactide (PLA). In addition, some more specific discriminations were obtained separating plastic materials belonging to the same polymer family e.g. high density polyethylene (HDPE) from low density polyethylene (LDPE). High discrimination rates were obtained despite the heterogeneity among samples especially differences in colors, thicknesses and surface textures. The reproducibility of the proposed approach was also tested using two spectrometers with considerable differences in their sensitivities. Discrimination rates were not affected proving that the developed approach could be extrapolated to different spectrometers. MIR combined with ICA is a promising tool for plastic waste separation that can help improve performance in this field; however further technological improvements and developments are required before it can be applied at an industrial level given that all tests presented here were performed under laboratory conditions.  相似文献

The recycling of fridges produces a mixed plastic product of limited value. In order to maximise its value, the separation of the individual polymers that include high impact polystyrene (HIPS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) must take place. The effectiveness of a hydrocyclone system for the separation of these plastics, using both water and calcium chloride solutions, has been investigated. In addition a qualitative procedure for the determination of the HIPS content of a mixed ABS/HIPS product, by selective dissolution in R-limonene, has been developed. It was found that the effective density of separation depended on the particle size and aspect ratio. As the particle size and aspect ratio decreased, the separation became more efficient and the offset between separation density and hydrocyclone medium density decreased. This suggests that, for efficient density separation, closely sized, fine plastic fractions are required. Using these criteria, it was found that the removal of high density plastic such as PVC was readily achieved using a hydrocyclone. A partial separation of HIPS from ABS was found to be possible, taking advantage of a small density difference, using a hydrocyclone medium density of 1035kgm(-3).  相似文献

Copolyesters of aliphatic monomers with a defined amount of terephthalic acid recently have been shown to be biodegradable. This group of plastic materials exhibits very interesting material properties with regard to their technical application potential. A tensile strength of 25 N/mm2 combined with elongations at break up to 1500% was achieved for BTA materials. Melting points varied from 80 to 140‡C. Biodegradation rate under compositing conditions were determined, showing typical erosion rates of films, in the range of 5 to 10 Μm/week. The material properties and the degradation rate as well can be adjusted by the copolymer composition. Stretching of the polymer in the cold state leads to 10-fold higher mechanical strength of the material. The polyester chain can be extended to high molar masses, resulting in melt viscosities suitable, e.g., for melt below extrusion.  相似文献

More and more polymer wastes are generated by industry and householders today. Recycling is an important process to reduce the amount of waste resulting from human activities. Currently, recycling technologies use relatively homogeneous polymers because hand-sorting waste is costly. Many promising technologies are being investigated for separating mixed thermoplastics, but they are still uneconomical and unreliable. At present, most waste polymers cause serious environmental problems. Burning polymers for recycling is not practiced since poisonous gases are released during the burning process. Particularly, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials among waste polymers generate hazardous HCl gas, dioxins containing Cl, etc., which lead to air pollution and shorten the life of the incinerator. In addition, they make other polymers difficult to recycle. Both polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and PVC have densities of 1.30–1.35 g/cm3 and cannot be separated using conventional gravity separation techniques. For this reason, polymer recycling needs new techniques. Among these techniques, froth flotation, which is also used in mineral processing, can be useful because of its low cost and simplicity. The main objective of this research is to recycle PET and PVC selectively from post-consumer polymer wastes and virgin polymers by using froth flotation. According to the results, all PVC particles were floated with 98.8% efficiency in virgin polymer separation while PET particles were obtained with 99.7% purity and 57.0% efficiency in post-consumer polymer separation.  相似文献

This paper investigates and compares the performances of polylactic acid (PLA)/kenaf (PLA-K) and PLA/rice husk (PLA-RH) composites in terms of biodegradability, mechanical and thermal properties. Composites with natural fiber weight content of 20% with fiber sizes of less than 100 μm were produced for testing and characterization. A twin-screw extrusion was used to compound PLA and natural fibers, and extruded composites were injection molded to test samples. Flexural and Izod impact test, TGA, soil burial test and SEM were used to investigate properties. All results were compared to a pure PLA matrix sample. The flexural modulus of the PLA increased with the addition of natural fibers, while the flexural strength decreased. The highest impact strength (34 J m−1), flexural modulus (4.5 GPa) and flexural strength (90 MPa) were obtained for the composite made of PLA/kenaf (PLA-K), which means kenaf natural fibers are potential to be used as an alternative filler to enhance mechanical properties. On the other hand PLA-RH composite exhibits lower mechanical properties. The impact strength of PLA has decreased when filled with natural fibers; this decrease is more pronounced in the PLA-RH composite. In terms of thermal stability it has been found that the addition of natural fibers decreased the thermal stability of virgin PLA and the decrement was more prominent in the PLA-RH composite. Biodegradability of the composites slightly increased and reached 1.2 and 0.8% for PLA-K and PLA-RH respectively for a period of 90 days. SEM micrographs showed poor interfacial between the polymer matrix and natural fibers.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to separate the different plastics of a mixed post-consumer plastic waste by the combination of a three-stage sink-float method and selective flotation. By using the three-stage sink-float method, six mixed-plastic wastes, belonging to the 0.3-0.5 cm size class and including high density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinylchloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers (ABS) were separated into two groups, i.e., a low density plastic group (HDPE and PP) and a high density plastic group (PET, PVC, PS and ABS) by tap water. Plastic whose density is less than that of the medium solution floats to the surface, while the one whose density is greater than that of the medium solution sinks to the bottom. The experimental results elucidated that complete separation of HDPE from PP was achieved by the three-stage sink-float method with 50% v/v ethyl alcohol. To succeed in the separation of a PS/ABS mixture from a PET/PVC mixture by the three-stage sink-float method, a 30% w/v calcium chloride solution was employed. To further separate post-consumer PET/PVC and PS/ABS based on plastic type, selective flotation was carried out. In order to succeed in selective flotation separation, it is necessary to render hydrophilic the surface of one or more species while the others are kept in a hydrophobic state. In flotation studies, the effects of wetting agent, frother, pH of solution and electrolyte on separation were determined. The selective flotation results showed that when using 500 mg l(-1) calcium lignosulfonate, 0.01 ppm MIBC, and 0.1 mg l(-1) CaCl2 at pH 11, PET could be separated from PVC. To separate ABS from PS, 200 mg l(-1) calcium lignosulfonate and 0.1 mg l(-1) CaCl2 at pH 7 were used as a flotation solution. Wettability of plastic increases when adding CaCl2 and corresponds to a decrease in its contact angles and to a reduction in the recovery of plastic in the floated product.  相似文献

A fed-batch process was developed, which allowed biotechnological production of the homopolyester poly(3-hydroxyvaleric acid) [poly(3HV)], in a mineral salts medium containing valeric acid as carbon source and complex nutrients as supplements byChromobacterium violaceum at a 10- and 300-L fermentation scale. This process yielded up to 40 g dry cell matter per L fermentation broth, and the cells contained up to 70% (w/w) poly(3HV). Poly(3HV), which was extracted from the cells with chloroform and was precipitated from this solvent with ethanol, was processed to test bars by injection molding or by press processing and to fibers by melt spinning. The unprocessed and processed poly(3HV) material was characterized with respect to the molecular weight and with respect to thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties. It was shown that it is possible to process biodegradable poly(3HV) thermoplastically and to obtain a polymer suitable for applications with low strength requirements.  相似文献

Innovative separation and beneficiation techniques of various materials encountered in electrical and electronic equipment wastes (WEEE) is a major improvement for its recycling. Mechanical separation-oriented characterisation of WEEE was conducted in an attempt to evaluate the amenability of mechanical separation processes. Properties such as liberation degree of fractions (plastics, metals ferrous and non-ferrous), which are essential for mechanical separation, are analysed by means of a grain counting approach. Two different samples from different recycling industries were characterised in this work. The first sample is a heterogeneous material containing different types of plastics, metals (ferrous and non-ferrous), printed circuit board (PCB), rubber and wood. The second sample contains a mixture of mainly plastics. It is found for the first sample that all aluminium particles are free (100%) in all investigated size fractions. Between 92% and 95% of plastics are present as free particles; however, 67% in average of ferromagnetic particles are liberated. It can be observed that only 42% of ferromagnetic particles are free in the size fraction larger than 20 mm. Particle shapes were also quantified manually particle by particle. The results show that the particle shapes as a result of shredding, turn out to be heterogeneous, thereby complicating mechanical separation processes. In addition, the separability of various materials was ascertained by a sink–float analysis and eddy current separation. The second sample was separated by automatic sensor sorting in four different products: ABS, PC–ABS, PS and rest product. The fractions were characterised by using the methodology described in this paper. The results show that the grade and liberation degree of the plastic products ABS, PC–ABS and PS are close to 100%. Sink–float separation and infrared plastic identification equipment confirms the high plastic quality. On the basis of these findings, a global separation flow sheet is proposed to improve the plastic separation of WEEE.  相似文献

The present article summarizes the development of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and organically modified layered silicates nanocomposite using a co-rotating twin screw extruder having a blown film unit. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) studies indicated an increase in d spacing of the nanoclays in the bio-nanocomposite hybrids revealing formation of intercalated morphology. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) also confirmed presence of partially exfoliated clay galleries as well as layers of intercalated structures within the PBAT matrix in the nanocomposite. Mechanical tests showed that the nanocomposite hybrids prepared using B109 nanoclay exhibited higher tensile modulus. Functionalization of PBAT matrix upon grafting with maleic anhydride (MA) resulted in further improvement in mechanical properties. The existence of interfacial bonds in grafted bio-nanocomposite hybrids are substantiated using FTIR spectroscopy. Thermal properties of nanocomposite hybrids employing DSC, TGA also revealed improved Tg, Tc and thermal stability over the virgin polymer. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) indicated an increase of storage modulus (E′) of PBAT biopolymer with incorporation of nanofiller. The biodegradability of PBAT bionanocomposite hybrids showed an increase in the rate of biodegradability with addition of Na+MMT due to hydrophilic nature of the nanoclay.  相似文献

From an environmental point of view, mechanical recycling is, in general, a good end-of-life option for poly(lactic acid) (PLA), one of the most important biobased polymers. However, the degradation of PLA during the service life and, especially, during the mechanical recycling process, leads to a decrease in the properties of PLA, thus reducing the applications of the recycled plastic. The main aim of this work was to study the addition of small amounts of halloysite nanotubes, during the recycling step, as the basis of a cost-effective method for improving the properties of the recycled PLA. Raw halloysite was modified with an aminosilane, and 2% by weight of both raw and modified halloysite were melt compounded with PLA previously subjected to accelerated ageing. The addition of the nanotubes led to recycled materials with improved properties because halloysite reduces the degradation of PLA by blocking the carboxyl groups, generated during the ageing and washing steps, which catalyze the degradation during the recycling process. This effect was more intense in the silanized nanotubes, because the carboxyl groups were effectively blocked by acid–base interactions with the amino groups of the chemical modification. The properties of the recycled plastic with only 2 wt% of silanized halloysite were very close to those of the virgin plastic.  相似文献

The demand for biodegradable plastic material is increasing worldwide. However, the cost remains high in comparison with common forms of plastic. Requirements comprise low cost, good UV-stability and mechanical properties, as well as solubility and water uptake lead to the preparation of multi-component polymer blends based on polyvinyl alcohol and starch in combination with waste products that are hard to utilize—waste lignin and hydrolysate extracted from chromium tanned waste. Surprisingly the addition of such waste products into PVA gives rise to blends with better biodegradability than commercial PVA in an aquatic aerobic environment with non-adapted activated sludge. These blends also exhibited greater solubility in the water and UV stability than commercial PVA. Tests on the processing properties of the blends (melt flow index, tensile strength and elongation at break of the films) as well as their mechanical properties showed that materials based on these blends might be applied in agriculture (for example as the systems for controlled-release pesticide or fertilizer) and, somewhat, in the packaging sector.  相似文献

Three newly synthesized polymer supported calix[4]arene ionophores (7–9) were synthesized, and their ion binding properties toward selected alkali (Li+, Na+, K+, Cs+) and transition metal (Hg2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+) cations were investigated. It has been observed that these ionophores are not selective toward a particular metal cation but show better ion binding property as compared to monomeric calixarene derivatives (2 and 6). Ionophore 6 and its supported polymer were also employed in dichromate anion extraction experiments. The polymeric ionophore (9) was found an effective extractant for dichromate anion even at pH 7.  相似文献

The objective of this research is flotation separation of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) waste plastics combined with ammonia pretreatment. The PC and ABS plastics show similar hydrophobicity, and ammonia treatment changes selectively floatability of PC plastic while ABS is insensitive to ammonia treatment. The contact angle measurement indicates the dropping of flotation recovery of PC is ascribed to a decline of contact angle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates reactions occur on PC surface, which makes PC surface more hydrophilic. Separation of PC and ABS waste plastics was conducted based on the flotation behavior of single plastic. At different temperatures, PC and ABS mixtures were separated efficiently through froth flotation with ammonia pretreatment for different time (13 min at 23 °C, 18 min at 18 °C and 30 min at 23 °C). For both PC and ABS, the purity and recovery is more than 95.31% and 95.35%, respectively; the purity of PC and ABS is up to 99.72% and 99.23%, respectively. PC and ABS mixtures with different particle sizes were separated effectively, implying that ammonia treatment possesses superior applicability.  相似文献
