Molecular systematic studies provide evidence for three new species of Bathymodiolus-like hydrothermal vent mussels (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) from relatively shallow waters (depth less than 750 m) associated with the Kermadec Arc off northern New Zealand. Mitochondrial COI sequences from the three putative new species differed substantially from those of other known bathymodiolin species from the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Population genetic analysis of one of these species (Bathymodiolus new species NZ-1) revealed heterogeneity in allozyme gene frequencies between samples collected from two seamounts about 50 km apart. Factors that might contribute to genetic differentiation between neighbouring seamounts are discussed.Communicated by M.S. Johnson, Crawley  相似文献

Two new species of Hydroidomedusae, Parateclaia norvegica sp.nov. and Foersteria quadrata sp.nov., are described from specimens collected in Korsfjorden, western Norway. Neither genus has previously been observed in the North-Atlantic Ocean. The closest congenerics to the new species occur in the Mediterranean, where family Teclaiidae has been considered endemic. P. norvegica and F. quadrata were only collected at sites 500 m or deeper and are possibly deep-water benthopelagic species like their congenerics elsewhere. Sampling took place for the entire year 2003 at 2- to 4-week intervals. F. quadrata, the more numerous of the new species, was absent from the water column only during the spring months, the implications of which regarding its lifecycle are discussed. Hypotheses on speciation in the Foersteria species group and family Teclaiidae are shortly discussed.  相似文献

Taxonomy is the foundation of biodiversity science because it furthers discovery of new species. Globally, there have never been so many people involved in naming species new to science. The number of new marine species described per decade has never been greater. Nevertheless, it is estimated that tens of thousands of marine species, and hundreds of thousands of terrestrial species, are yet to be discovered; many of which may already be in specimen collections. However, naming species is only a first step in documenting knowledge about their biology, biogeography, and ecology. Considering the threats to biodiversity, new knowledge of existing species and discovery of undescribed species and their subsequent study are urgently required. To accelerate this research, we recommend, and cite examples of, more and better communication: use of collaborative online databases; easier access to knowledge and specimens; production of taxonomic revisions and species identification guides; engagement of nonspecialists; and international collaboration. “Data‐sharing” should be abandoned in favor of mandated data publication by the conservation science community. Such a step requires support from peer reviewers, editors, journals, and conservation organizations. Online data publication infrastructures (e.g., Global Biodiversity Information Facility, Ocean Biogeographic Information System) illustrate gaps in biodiversity sampling and may provide common ground for long‐term international collaboration between scientists and conservation organizations.  相似文献

Current threats of invasive species have significant implications for ecological systems. Given their potential impacts, invasive species have been the subject of extensive empirical and theoretical studies. However, these studies have tended to focus on species that produce highly visible ecological and economic impacts. In our study, we take a step back from focusing on these high-impact invasive species, and examine the general colonization (invasion) process of exotic species that have various “competitive abilities” against the native species. Using a two-species cellular automaton model, we demonstrate that: (1) a threshold level of competitive ability is required for the exotic species to successfully establish in a new landscape and (2) an exotic species with superior competitive ability does not necessarily become dominant in a landscape (alternatively, a species that has inferior competitive ability may successfully colonize a new system). Our findings have significant implications for the study of species invasions and also provide clues to how species assemble in ecological communities.  相似文献

A recensus was undertaken of the Middlesex Fells (West), a 400-ha woodland park in Metropolitan Boston, to determine how species composition changed between 1894 (the time of first census) and 1993. This park is isolated by an 0.5-km-wide barrier of roads and development from the eastern half of the Fells preserve, is at least 5 km from other protected areas, and is strongly affected by human activity. Out of 422 original plant species, 155 species were no longer present in 1993. Sixty-four new species were recorded on the site in 1993, the majority of them exotic species. The proportion of native species in the flora went from 83% in 1894 to 74% in 1993. Overall, the number of native species is declining at a rate of O.36% per year, whereas the exotic species are increasing at a rate of 0.18% per year. Many of the native species lost were attractive and well-known components of the native flora, such as orchids and lobeliads. Many remaining native plant species have been reduced to one or a few small populations. Species of moist woods were disproportionately lost from the Fells. The loss of species has coincided with an increase in human activity, including ground fires, a greater number of trails and roads, thinning of the forest, and trampling of the vegetation, all of which may have contributed to species loss. A policy to stop and reverse this progressive loss of species might include preventing new trails from being developed, closing off some existing trails, excluding people from sensitive areas, and reintroducing some of the lost species.  相似文献

All species of Bathynellacea, known to occur in the immediate vicinity of the sea, belong to the same genus, Hexabathynella gen. n. The species are: H. pauliani, H. knoepffleri, H. tenera. Also included into the new genus are the fresh-water species H. hebrica, H. szidati, H. minuta. To these, a new species, H. halophila sp. n., is added; it was found at a salinity of 27‰ and is the first representative of the Bathynellacea recorded from polyhaline waters. A simple experiment revealed that the new species is likely to be extremely euryhaline. Current opinion as to the marine origin of the Bathynellacea is criticized in the light of new evidence resulting from recent studies on the evolution and systematic relationships within this order. Contrary to common belief, the Bathynellacea did not colonize the fresh-water mesopsammal via the mesopsammal of marine sandy beaches. The extant Bathynellacea most likely derived from ancestors which lived in fresh-water lakes or running surface waters. They became distributed in their mesopsammal habitat. The occurrence of some species of Hexabathynella gen. n. in oligohalime to polyhaline waters is secondary.  相似文献

Summary Analyses of leaf extracts ofDicerandra frutescens, a highly aromatic mint plant from central Florida listed as an endangered species, revealed presence of 12 closely related monoterpenes. The principal of these, (+)—trans-pulegol, is a new natural product, the synthesis of which is described. The terpenes are produced in glandular capsules that release their contents upon injury of the leaf. Data from bioassays with ants and cockroaches indicate that the terpenes serve for defense against insects.Dicerandra does, however, have a leaf-eating enemy, the caterpillar of a pyralid moth,Pyrausta panopealis. The discovery of a new natural product from an endangered species raises questions about the chemical implications of species extinction.  相似文献

The huge diversity of tree species in tropical rain-forests makes the modelling of its dynamics a difficult task. One-way to deal with it is to define species groups. A classical approach for building species groups consists in grouping species with nearby characteristics, using cluster analysis. A group of species is then characterized by the same list of attributes as a single species, and it is incorporated in the model of forest dynamics in the same way as a single species. In this paper, a new approach for building species group is proposed. It relies on the discrepancy between model predictions when all species are considered separately, and model predictions when species groups are used. An aggregation error that quantifies the bias in model predictions that results from species grouping is thus defined. We then define the optimal species grouping as the one that minimizes the aggregation error. Using data from a tropical rain-forest in French Guiana and a toy model of forest dynamics, this new method for species grouping is confronted to the classical method based on cluster analysis of the species characteristics, and to a combined method based on a cluster analysis that uses the aggregation error as a dissimilarity between species. The optimal species grouping is quite different from the classical species grouping. The ecological interpretation of the optimal groups is difficult, as there is no direct linkage between the species characteristics and the way that they are grouped. The combined approach yields species groups that are closed to the optimal ones, with much less computations. The optimal species groups are thus specific to the model of forest dynamics and lack the generality of those of the classical method, that in turn are not optimal.  相似文献

Submersible observations off Japan, Hawaii, and California, USA, at depths of 645–1497 m, have revealed a previously undescribed species of large semaeostome scyphomedusa. These observations were made from 1993 to 2002. The medusa, Tiburonia granrojo n. sp. is sufficiently different from other species in the family Ulmariidae to justify the creation of a new subfamily (Tiburoniinae). This subfamily and species are distinct in overall bell morphology and color, lacking any marginal tentacles, and having four to seven short, thick oral arms that extend beyond the bell margin. The entire medusa, including the mesoglea, is a deep red. A new key to the subfamilies of the Ulmaridae and large subunit rRNA sequence information for T. granrojo are provided. That new species of this size and mass are still being discovered in the deep waters of the world suggests that deep-water species remain undescribed. Dispersal Can Limit Local Plant Distribution   总被引:21,自引:0,他引:21  
The ability of species to establish new populations at unoccupied sites is a critical feature in the maintenance of biological diversity, and it has taken on new importance as a result of global climate change and expected changes in species distribution. To examine the dispersal potential of plant species, seeds of four annual plant species were experimentally dispersed 40 to 600 m from existing populations in Massachusetts (U.S.A.) to 34 nearby unoccupied but apparently suitable sites. At three of these sites new populations were established that persisted for four generations and expanded slowly in area. At seven sites, a small initial population eventually died out. At the 24 other sites, new populations did not become established, indicating that the sites were in some way unsuitable, that not enough seeds arrived, or that conditions suitable for seed germination do not occur every year. These results suggest that some species may be unable to disperse naturally out of their existing ranges in response to global climate change, particularly if habitat fragmentation creates barriers to dispersal. These species may have to be assisted to reach suitable sites nearby to prevent their extinction in the wild.  相似文献

The sponge sub-class Homoscleromorpha is generally considered to include just two families, the Oscarellidae (without spicules) and the Plakinidae (with simple spicules). In May 1990, an unusual sponge was found deep inside a submarine cave in the western Mediterranean Sea. On the basis of externally visible characters this sponge appeared indistinguishable from the common plakinid species Corticium candelabrum Schmidt, 1862. However, on closer examination in the laboratory the new sponge proved to be devoid of spicules. Therefore, despite great morphological similarities to C. candelabrum, the new sponge should, by taxonomic convention, have been placed in the Oscarellidae. On the basis of other criteria, the similarities to C. candelabrum were great and the new sponge was at first considered to be conspecific. Thus, the taxonomic position of the new sponge and its relationship to C. candelabrum are highly confusing. It could be an aspiculate morph of C. candelabrum, or a new and undescribed related species or, lacking spicules, it could justifiably be placed in a different family (Oscarellidae). The relationship of the new sponge to C. candelabrum and also to two species of Oscarella (Oscarellidae) was assessed by the use of enzyme electrophoresis to estimate genetic divergence between species. It was found that the new sponge was reproductively isolated from sympatric C. candelabrum, with 6 of 16 loci proving diagnostic. Thus it is clear that the new sponge belongs to a different biological species. Surprisingly it was also found that, although this new species was fairly closely related to C. candelabrum (level of genetic identity, I0.47), the two Oscarella species were similarly closely related to C. candelabrum (I0.31 to 0.41) and rather less closely to the new species (I0.17 to 0.28). Indeed from genetic identity estimates, O. tuberculata is more closely related to C. candelabrum than it is to O. lobularis. It is concluded that all homoscleromorph sponges should be placed in the single family Plakinidae.  相似文献

This paper looks for positive spillovers from the legal protection of one species to the welfare of others and for evidence of economies of scope in the costs associated with protecting species under the Endangered Species Act. The analysis uses data on the intensity of interest-group comment activity in response to proposals to protect new species. The results suggest that these phenomena are significant, strengthening arguments that wildlife-protection policy should be shifted toward species groups or ecosystems. However, the findings are also consistent with diminishing public willingness-to-pay for protected species in a given area, a pattern which also has public-policy implications.  相似文献

Urban areas often contain sizeable pockets of degraded land, such as inactive landfills, that could be reclaimed as wildlife habitat and as connecting links to enhance remnant natural areas. In the northeastern U.S., many such lands fail to undergo natural succession to woodland, instead retaining a weedy, herbaceous cover for many years. We hypothesize that seed dispersal is a limiting factor, and that a form of secondary succession could be stimulated by introducing clusters of trees and shrubs to attract avian seed dispersers. As a direct test, we censused a 1.5-ha experimental plantation on the Fresh Kills Landfill (Staten Island, New York) one year after installation, in search of evidence that the plantation was spreading or increasing in diversity. The 17 planted species, many from coastal scrub forests native to this region, were surviving well but contributed almost no seedlings to the area, in part because only 20% of the installed trees or shrubs were reproductive. Of the 1079 woody seedlings found, 95% came from sources outside the plantation; most (71%) were from fleshy-fruited, bird-dispersed plants from nearby woodland fringes. Although the restoration planting itself had not begun to produce seedlings, it did function as a site for attracting dispersers, who enriched the young community with 20 new species. One-fourth of all new recruits were from nine additional wind-dispersed species. Locations with a high ratio of trees to shrubs had proportionately more recruits, indicating that plant size contributed to disperser attraction. The density of new recruits of each species was dependent on distance from the nearest potential seed source. Introducing native species with the capacity to attract avian dispersers may be the key to success of many restoration programs.  相似文献

Predicting Invasiveness of Plant Species Based on Biological Information   总被引:23,自引:0,他引:23  
Abstract: Previous studies suggest that, within particular groups of plant species, biological attributes can be used to predict the potential invasiveness of species that are intentionally introduced for horticultural or agricultural purposes. We examined the broad question of whether commonly available biological information can predict the invasiveness of a wide range of intentionally and accidentally introduced species. We collected information from published floras on 165 pairs of plant species. In each pair, one species originated in Europe and successfully invaded New Brunswick, Canada, and the other was a congeneric species that has not invaded North America. Only three biological characters—lifeform, stem height, and flowering period—and European geographic range were known for all species. We conducted multiple logistic regression analyses using two-thirds (110) of the species pairs and tested the predictive ability of resulting models using the remaining 55 pairs. Although a significant logistic regression model was obtained using the biological attributes, the model could not predict invasiveness of the test species pairs. In contrast, a model using only European range successfully predicted invasiveness in 70% of the test species. The importance of geographic range suggests that prediction of invasiveness on a species-by-species basis is not likely to help stem the flow of accidentally introduced invasive species. Species that are inadvertently picked up and moved to a new location due to their wide distribution are the same species that are likely to succeed in a new environment due to their wide environmental tolerances.  相似文献

We loaded a lignocellulosic substrate extracted from wheat bran with ferric ions. This new low-cost adsorbent was prepared for the adsorption and removal of arsenate and arsenite ions from aqueous systems. The loading process of Fe in this biomaterial was done by hydrolization of a ferric salt while an alkaline solution was added dropwise. The new material obtained has a high sensivity to arsenite and arsenate species. Here, we investigated the effect of contact time, pH, and Fe content on the adsorption of both arsenic ions on the new material. This adsorption was found to be highly pH-dependent, which can be explained on the basis of electrostatic interactions between ionic species in solution and the ≡FeOH surface groups. The maximum adsorption capacity of arsenite and arsenate species vary linearly with the amount of Fe loaded on the lignocellulosic substrate.  相似文献

The planktonic larval duration (PLD) was estimated for 42 species of littoral fishes from the north-western Mediterranean Sea. Daily increments and settlement marks on the otoliths (sagittae or lapilli) of new settlers and post-settlers were used to determine the larval stage duration. We also used PLD in the new settlers of some species to confirm the accuracy of the settlement marks in post-settlers. The duration of the planktonic larval stage ranges from 9 days in Symphodus ocellatus to 55 days in Xyrichtis novacula and 71 days in Lipophrys trigloides. Species in the same family did not display any clear tendency toward having similar PLDs. On the other hand, larval duration tended to be similar within a genus, with the exception of Lipophrys. Among conspecifics, the time spent in the plankton usually varied only by 2-7 days, except in Aidablennius sphynx, Lipophrys trigloides, Coris julis and Thalassoma pavo. No clear patterns were discernible in genera, with some species that settled in winter and other species that settled in summer, although we observed a certain tendency of individuals of closely related species (e.g. family Sparidae) to have a shorter larval duration in the warmer part of the year than in the colder part of the year. Settlement marks have been observed on the otoliths of all the species studied, and the PLDs in new settlers are an appropriate means of validating settlement marks. A rapid decrease in increment width over settlement (type Ia) is the most common type of mark (66.7% of the total species studied).  相似文献
