Capnella gaboensis Verseveldt, 1977 was sampled at four sites in Sydney Harbour, during 1981–1984. This soft coral has an annual cycle of gonad development, with gonad number reaching a peak in May several weeks prior to spawning, and gonad size reaching a peak in May–June at spawning. The gonads develop during the warm months, and colonies spawn their gametes in late autumn and early winter. Gonad development is neither synchronous within colonies nor within populations, possibly reflecting the protracted nature of spawning. The histology of the developing oocytes and spermaries is described in detail C. gaboensis is a surface-brooder. The planulae are similar in structure to the larvae of other octocorals. The larvae are benthic, settling quickly upon suitable substratum, metamorphosing into polyps with mouths, tentacles and spicules, approximately one week after settling.  相似文献

Two new hydromedusae collected in 1970 in the Eilat Bay (Red Sea) are here described as Allorathkea ankeli n. gen. n. sp. and Thamnostoma eilatensis n. sp. A. ankeli (Family Rathkeidae) is characterized by 8 radial canals, dichotomously branched oral arms, and solid marginal tentacles arranged in 8 groups. T. eilatensis (Family Bougainvilliidae) possesses 4 solitary marginal tentacles, 4 interradial gonads and dichotomously branched oral tentacles inserted above mouth-rim.  相似文献

The euryalinid snake star Astrobrachion constrictum (Farquhar), a normally deep-water species, exists within SCUBA diving range in New Zealand flords, and thus presents a unique opportunity for study. A population of A. constrictum in Doubtful Sound was investigated from February 1990 to July 1994 to determine the reproductive cycle. Unlike most ophiuroids, the gonads of A. constrictum are positioned along the aboral coelom in the proximal portion of the arms. The proximal 2 to 3 cm of the arms of individuals were thus removed on an approximately monthly basis for histological examination of the gonads. Image analysis was used to determine oocyte size-frequency distributions. A gonad index was calculated for each individual based on the ratio of cross-sectional area of the gonads to cross-sectional area of the arm. Maturity indices were calculated based on stage of development of the gonads of each individual. A. constrictum has a period of enhanced breeding activity in April–June, after which both the gonad and maturity indices decline. The increase in gametogenic activity during these months was correlated with rising sea temperature within the fiord. Although the females showed an annual pattern of gonad development, oogenesis was continuous throughout the year, with oocytes at different stages of development present in the gonads. Males also showed continuous spermatogenesis and, although the same annual pattern of gonad development was evident as seen in the females, it was less marked. The presence of females with large oocytes and ripe males throughout the study indicates that breeding in the Doubtful Sound population is prolonged, and possibly continuous, as found in many deep-sea ophiuroids.  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was conducted in the winter of 2003–2004 to assess the effect of varying photoperiod regime on consumption rate, assimilation rate, absorption efficiency, and gonad development of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis. Adult individuals were collected from the wild after they had been exposed to the ambient autumn photoperiod cue (which is the extraneous trigger thought to elicit gametogenesis in this species) and placed at ambient temperature for 12 weeks under five different photoperiod regimes: (1) 24 h light:0 h dark=“0D”, (2) 16 h light:8 h dark=“8D”, (3) 8 h light:16 h dark=“16D”, (4) 0 h light:24 h dark=“24D”, and (5) ambient photoperiod (range: 10.50–15.25 h dark). Urchins in these five treatments were fed ad libitum with bull kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana. A sixth treatment consisted of starved individuals held under 0D conditions. Various gonad factors including gonad index, percent gonad water, gonad colour (CIE lightness or L*, CIE hue or a*, and CIE chroma or b*), percent area occupation of the gonad by various cell types (nutritive phagocytes, spermatozoa, and secondary oocytes/ova), and stage of development were assessed at the beginning of the experiment and at weeks 4, 8, and 12 of the study. Consumption and assimilation rates were assessed at weeks 4 and 12 and absorption efficiency at week 12 of the experiment. Urchins were predominantly in the growing and premature stages at the beginning of the experiment, but by week 4 at least 20% of individuals in all treatments receiving food were classified as mature. Spawning occurred during all these treatments between weeks 4 and 8, as evidenced by significant decreases in spermatozoa and secondary oocytes/ova and a significant decrease in percent gonad water, but was not accompanied by major declines in gonad indices. Greater than 90% of individuals in all five of the fed treatments were in the recovering and growing stages at the end of the experiment. The 16D treatment had by far the greatest percentage of urchins in the growing stage. In contrast, individuals that were starved were predominantly in the mature stage at weeks 4, 8, and 12, with only ~30% reaching the spawning stage by the end of the experiment. Photoperiod significantly affected gonad indices at the termination of the experiment with gonad index being the highest in the 16D treatment; this was significantly greater than in the 8D and ambient treatments. Photoperiod did not significantly affect gonad percent water, gonad lightness, or gonad hue. Gonad chroma was significantly affected by photoperiod, urchins held under ambient conditions having significantly lower b* readings than individuals in any other treatment. Photoperiod had little or no affect on consumption rate, assimilation rate, or absorption efficiency. Thus, differences among treatments in regards to gonad index, gonad chroma, and stage of development cannot be attributed to variations in feeding, absorption, or assimilation. The results of this experiment indicate that once gametogenesis is initiated, photoperiod manipulation cannot prevent ultimate spawning. However, photoperiod regime can affect the rate at which urchins move through the various stages of the gametogenic cycle. Urchins placed on short days under artificial lighting (16D) moved through the spawning stage into recovering and growing stages the fastest. This photoperiod regime also produced the highest gonad index at the end of the experiment. Since the commercial urchin market prefers large gonads in the growing and premature stages (i.e. before the mature stage is reached and gonads start leaking sperm and eggs), short day-lengths under artificial lighting (16D) appear to be the best photoperiod conditions for optimizing marketability.  相似文献

In tentacles and other parts of Cerianthus sp., besides a protease, a strong agglutinin has been found which agglutinates red cells of different origin and which shows an antigalactose specificity. In gonads and mantle mucus, a Blood-Group-H-like material could be demonstrated. The agglutinin is an acid protein, and can be precipitated by base polymers. For tentacles, a precipitin with anti-galactogen specificity is described and analysed. Over a 3-year period (1996-1998), reproduction of the commercial sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger, 1833) was investigated in the Solomon Islands to determine the spawning pattern and whether gametogenesis is continuous or seasonal. The gonad consisted of a single cohort of tubules that developed uniformly. Macroscopic examination of the gonads revealed that mature gametes were present throughout the year. Individuals with gonads at different stages of maturity were present in most samples. Partly spawned gonads were prevalent in females, whereas mature gonads were prevalent in males. The time at which the peak gonad index was recorded differed among years. Although gametogenesis was continuous, with a potential for prolonged gamete release, a period of enhanced spawning occurred during the dry season, from September to December. Maximum gonad indices were reached prior to and during this period of enhanced spawning. Histology revealed that gametogenesis reinitiated in partly spawned gonads, resulting in the presence of gametes at different stages of development in the gonad. The uniform growth of gonad tubules indicated that H. scabra does not conform to the progressive tubule recruitment model described for holothurian oogenesis. Continuous reproduction in H. scabra and prolonged availability of mature gametes would facilitate use of this species for aquaculture.  相似文献

Variations in organ indices, organic levels, organic and caloric contents of the gonads of the brooding echinoid Abatus cordatus (Verrill), collected in the Morbihan Gulf (49°30′S; 70°E) were studied over a 1 yr period (March 1978 to January 1979). In both sexes, a clear annual cycle was discernable for organ indices, and for organic and caloric contents. In contrast, the protein levels in the gonads varied moderately, while the levels of lipid and carbohydrate remained almost constant. This peculiarity sets A. cordatus apart from nearly all other echinoids characterized by an annual reproductive cycle. The male and female gonad indices change synchronously. The gonad indices double during maturation, reflecting variations in the germinal tissue. In both sexes, the maximal gonad index (at the end of March) coincides with the onset of the spawning season. The average male gonad index is 50% higher than that of the female. This difference is related to the restriction of coelomic space in the female due to development of the brood pouches. At maturity, the lipid and carbohydrate levels in the ovary are 2.8 and 2.1 times greater, respectively, than the levels in the testis, the latter having a 25% higher protein level. This disparity in organic levels reflects mainly the differences in germinal tissue composition. The female reproductive effort is higher than that of the male. The spawn energy output of a standard individual is 200 cal for a male and 228 cal for a female. The unusually lower gonad index of the female is compensated for by higher lipid and carbohydrate levels, giving the ovary a 40% higher calorific value.  相似文献

Eutima sapinhoa n. sp. is a small hydroid, which lives attached by a basal disc to the mantle, foot, gills and labial palps of the bivalve Tivela mactroides (Born, 1778), found on the northern littoral of São Paulo State, Brazil. This bivalve, locally known as “sapinhoá”, is used as food by the coastal inhabitants. The hydroid produces a leptomedusa which belongs to the family Eutimidae. The medusa bud develops as a small knob-like protuberance near the base of the polyp and, after 61/2 days, reaches the free-swimming stage in covered preparation dishes containing about 200-ml filtered sea water at a temperature of 20° to 22°C. After 25 days the medusa is 4 mm high, 4-mm in diameter, and possesses 4 radial tentacles —each about 2 to 3 times as long as the bell diameter, 8 marginal vesicles — 2 in each quadrant, and 28 small marginal swellings — 7 in each quadrant. The peduncle is as long as the height of the bell, 4 single long gonads develop on the subumbrella on each radial canal. The nematocysts are small atrichous isorhizae, with capsules averaging 7 μm in length.  相似文献

Copulation and egg-laying of 3 species of marine Convolutidae are compared and analysed in relation to internal structure, settlement behaviour, and habitat. Convoluta convoluta (Abildgaard) inhabits the sea-weed belt, Archaphanostoma agile (Jensen) the uppermost layer of sediments rich in detritus, and Pseudaphanostoma psammophilum Dörjes the mesopsammal. The structure of sexual organs and the mechanisms of sperm transfer are discussed in regard to phylogenetic lines of development. The complete set of hermaphroditic sexual organs and the mutual copulation in c. convoluta are considered to be primitive. The reduction of the female organs, as well as the pronounced differentiation of the male copulatory organs, and the hypodermal sperm injection in A. agile and P. psammophilum are more advanced. In regard to structure and function of its sexual organs, P. psammophilum is extremely well adapted to its habitat. C. convoluta probably deposits the eggs through its pharynx. In A. agile and P. psammophilum egg-laying is associated with a rupture of the body wall. In general, C. convoluta lays 20 to 30 eggs. A. agile 1 to 7 eggs, in a single mass, a few days after copulation, P. psammophilum produces up to 15 single eggs over a period of up to 20 days after the preceding copulation. Among other features, this fact characterizes P. psammophilum as a typical inhabitant of the mesopsammal. While A. agile and P. psammophilum are capable of producing eggs continously, C. convoluta requires more than 14 days before it is again able to release another egg-mass. If kept isolated, A. agile lays eggs extremely rarely; individuals hatched from such eggs do not survive. Three species of acoelous turbellarians could be cultivated successfully at 16° to 18°C; A. agile and P. psam-mophilum were fed with datoms of the genus Nitzschia; Pseudohaplogonaria vacua Dörjes (Haploposthiidae) fed only on A. agile. In order to prevent bacterial infection, 0.25 g/l p-Aminobenzolsulfonacetamide were added to the sea water used as cultivation medium. Embryogenesis of A. agile and P. psammophilum lasts 2 to 5 days, that of P. vacua, 9 to 15 days. On an average, freshly hatched A. agile require 23 days for attaining sexual maturity, P. psammophilum 33 days, and P. vacua 70 days. Normally, A. agile lays 11 to 12 eggs, P. psammophilum 7 to 8 eggs, within 10 days, while P. vacua lays only sporadically (one specimen produces only about 10 eggs within 200 days). These differences in rates of reproduction correspond to respective differences in rates of loss through predation and population densities in the natural environment. A. agile is especially well suited for laboratory experiments; it can be cultured easily, and is characterized by constant production of eggs, and considerable longevity; even after 19 months, cultured A. agile exhibited undiminished vitality. In A. agile, duration of embryogenesis and postlarval development, as well as egg production, were examined at different constant temperatures. The upper lethal temperature of A. agile is 25° to 26°C; egg production is markedly lower at 22°C than at 16° to 18°C; at 16° to 18°C and at 5° to 6°C, rate of propagation is nearly the same, provided that A. agile has been adapted to a constant temperature of 5° to 6°C for a sufficient period of time. Egg production is considerably diminished at 3° to 4°C; it ceases at-1° to +1°C. A. agile is extremely resistant to starvation. Specimens kept without food first resorb their oocytes, then their sexual organs, and finally the greater part of their somatic cells. Of 15 A. agile, 12 survived after 50 days of starvation; the survivors became reduced to the size of newly-hatched young; they attained their normal size again after a feeding period of 30 days. In 13 species of oviparous acoelous turbellarians, development of living embryos was observed until gastrulation (16-cell stage). These observations, on a wide variety of forms, demonstrated that the “Spiral-Duett-Furchung” represents the typical cleavage modus in the Acoela. Examples are provided of the embryogenesis of A. agile and Archocelis macrorhabditis Dörjes. In the two very small species Diopithoporus brachypharyngeus Dörjes and Acoela gen. spec. 2 (200 to 300 μm) which live in sublittoral fine sand, embryonic development occurs inside the parents. In these species, cleavage could be followed clearly only to the 4-cell stage. Particular attention was paid to embryos which developed atypically; the pertinent results allow a re-interpretation of the reports by Bogomolov (1960) and Steinböck (1966) on the embryogenesis of acoelous turbellarians.  相似文献

Fatty acid analyses are emerging as a powerful technique to probe trophic interactions between organisms. In this paper, the application of both this procedure and gonad index (GI) determination on two populations (intertidal and subtidal) of the echinoid Psammechinus miliaris is reported. The investigation spanned the 3-month spawning period of Scottish west coast populations. In both populations a progressive decrease in the GI was found, coupled with an increasing maturity stage (from mature to spent). Sexual maturation and decrease in GI was synchronous between the two populations. In conjunction, there were distinct changes in gonad biochemistry. Differences in the fatty acid composition of the gonad reflected the changes in sexual maturation. Mature males and females had significant differences in the fatty acid composition of their gonads, whereas post-spawned individuals showed no gender differences. Male urchins had higher levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) compared to females, and there was a dramatic reduction in the fatty acids 22:6(n−3) and 20:5(n−3) with increasing maturity stage. Using multivariate statistical techniques, these changes in the fatty acid composition of the sea urchin gonad were linked to habitat related diet differences combined with gender differences. These changes in the fatty acid signatures clearly reflect the dual function of the gonad as both a nutrient store and a reproductive organ.  相似文献

Generalized additive models were used to synthesize the data from 52 publications on the gonad growth and spawning seasonality of Paracentrotus lividus and identify spatial and temporal patterns in the reproductive processes. According to our results, Atlantic populations spawn in spring and develop large gonads (6.4 ± 0.2% of fresh body weight (mean ± SE)), which increase in size toward higher latitudes. While in the Mediterranean, the gonads are smaller (3.1 ± 0.1%), possibly as the result of successive spawnings which impede nutrients accumulating in the gonads. Differences were also observed between habitats: gonad production was higher in seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean and in subtidal rocky substrates in the Atlantic. Food availability might cause these variations as well as the negative correlation observed between depth and the gonad index for rocky substrates. Sex and body size do not seem to influence greatly gonad growth.  相似文献

Hong Kong, lying just below the Tropic of Cancer (22°17′N, 114°09′E), experiences a strongly seasonal environment, with a cool almost temperate winter and a hot, tropical, summer. Histological sectioning of the gonads of the high-shore barnacle, Chthamalus malayensis Pilsbry, showed a seasonal trend in the development of its reproductive organs. Four stages of female gonad development were identified according to the cell types present: post-spawning, resting, growth and mature stages. The female gonad was mature from April to November, which was related to seawater temperatures, and entered a resting phase from December to March. Although the male gonad showed a seasonal developmental trend and reached maximum maturity in summer, the seminal vesicles were full of spermatozoa and functional throughout the year. The reproductive season of this species is therefore solely dependant upon the maturity of the female gonad. The estimated maximum number of broods per year was up to 10 and the maximum number of eggs produced per brood can reach 3,000 eggs. The minimum size for female gonad maturity was 6 mm rostro-carinal diameter (RCD) at which size, the barnacles were ~6-month old. Sperm production occurred at a smaller size (2 mm=2-month old). Compared with Chthamalus montagui and Chthamalus stellatus from temperate regions, C. malayensis produced a greater number of broods per year, had a longer reproductive period and faster gonad development. Chthamaloid barnacles in tropical regions may, therefore, invest more energy per year in reproduction during their life span. Contrary to the seasonal gonad developmental pattern of C. malayensis in the present study, however, C. malayensis in Singapore (which experiences only slight seasonal variation) had mature female and male gonads throughout the year, further supporting the strong role of climatic conditions effecting the reproductive biology of barnacles.  相似文献

The interstitial archiannelid Trilobodrilus axi from the eulittoral of the North Sea has only one reproductive period in the summer (May to July). Sperm is transferred by hypodermic injection. The male copulatory organ may be adhered to any part of the female body for about 1 min. Eggs, without adhesive ability, are discharged into the sediment; however, after about 10 to 15 min the egg membrane swells and becomes a thick and sticky covering. T. axi has a direct development. The young hatch with the definitive number of 7 segments. The phylogenetic development of the reproductive behaviour and its adaptive value for life in the mesopsammal are discussed.  相似文献

The dendrochirote holothurian Aslia lefevrei (Barrois) is locally and densely aggregated (>70 individuals m-2) in Galway Bay, on the west coast of Ireland. It has a discrete, relatively short breeding period from the end of February to the beginning of April, with peak activity in March. The sexes are separate and the single gonad, consisting of numerous tubules (100 to 800), lies in the anterior coelom. Both gonad index values and histological observations indicate that gametogenesis resumes in June/July after a brief post-spawned resting period. Little oocyte growth and sperm production occurs over the warm summer months when the holothurian is actively feeding. Gonad index values, however, increase rapidly during this period and reach high values by early winter without concomitant increases in maturity indices. This is subsequently followed by slight reductions in the gonad indices, before reaching peak values in February. It is suggested that this is probably due to the initial build-up and subsequent assimilation of storage products in the gonad, the development of gametogenic products and the frequent assimilation thereafter of unwanted ova. Spawning generally takes between 5 and 60 min, with the entire contents of the gonad rarely being shed in a single release. During this process, the holothurian raises its anterior end and, with the extended tentacles close together, emits a stream of gametes from the genital pore in the mid-dorsal line. The gonad index, GI, is widely used as a measure of changes in reproductive state. There are, however, problems with its use because it is based on the implicit assumption of an isometric relationship between gonad size and some measure of total size. If, for example, gonad weight and total weight are used, the exponent for an allometric relationship usually is ignored and hence assumed to be 1.0. It is further assumed that this exponent is fixed for all states of the reproductive cycle and that gonads begin to develop at size = 0. Data for the purple sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus at Gregory Point, Oregon, USA, gathered over a period of 31 months showed that these assumptions cannot be supported. The relationship is better modeled with a function that (1) takes into account size of initial gonad production and (2) allows allometric exponents that vary with site or season. Thus, a better approach is to use a wide range of sizes to estimate size when gonads begin to develop and then, with this correction, ANCOVA to test for differences of gonad size among samples. Gonad changes at Gregory Point were estimated using fixed sizes of 5 cm diameter and 60 g total weight. Publishing means for X and Y, the standard error of the estimate, R 2, and slope for each regression are shown to be sufficient to compare our results with results across studies.  相似文献

Induction of triploidy in aquatic organisms has increased worldwide in the last two decades, mostly because triploids have better growth than diploids. According to a physiological hypothesis, partial or total sterility of triploids allows the accumulation of reserves in muscle and other tissues instead of being transferred to the gonad. The present study analyzes lipid, protein, carbohydrate, and fatty acid levels in muscle and gonads of Nodipecten subnodosus triploids and diploids over 18 months from June 2001 to December 2002. An important increase in gonadosomatic index of diploids scallops was observed from May to June 2002 reaching the highest values in August. Such increase was not observed in triploid scallops. Changes in biochemical composition in female gonad were in general related to the accumulation of reserves during gonad development of diploid scallops. This accumulation was lower for triploid scallops, in accordance to their sterility, especially for carbohydrates and acylglycerides. Adductor muscle index as well as protein and carbohydrate levels in muscle increased in both ploidy groups during the reproductive period indicating no mobilization of reserves to sustain gonad development in both ploidy groups. These results partially support the physiological hypothesis on the advantage of triploids: in a rich food locality no mobilization of reserves is needed to sustain gametogenesis. This, together with a possible lower efficiency of energy assimilation at high food concentration for triploids, may be the reason for an apparent lack of superiority of N. subnodosus triploids in terms of adductor muscle growth. Only the levels of particular highly unsaturated fatty acids levels (namely 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3) in muscle of diploid and triploid decreased during the reproductive period, indicating a possible transfer of selected fatty acids to gonads, even in triploids. The muscle of triploids has a slightly but significantly higher proportion of 22:6n-3 compared to diploids, which can have implications for the nutritional and commercial value of triploid adductor muscle.  相似文献

The gonads of Serranus cabrilla (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Canary Islands were studied between September 1992 and July 1993. Macroscopic classification of the maturity stages was compared with histolog ical classification of gonad characteristics, and the effect␣of the classification method on the determination of the spawning season and size at maturity was investigated. Analysis of gonad organization and development confirmed that this species is synchronously hermaphroditic. Ovarian-tissue development is asynchronous, and testicular tissue consists of continuous spermatogonia. Six stages of oogenesis and five of spermatogenesis are described, based on differences in staining and in size and on differences in the nucleus and cytoplasm structure as viewed through a light microscope. Two types of atretic degeneration of eggs are also described. Agreement between macroscopic and histological staging was low, although both methods provided similar results in spawning-season determination and size at maturity. The spawning season of S. cabrilla is from February to July, with a peak in May. Fish size at first maturity (size at which 50% of all fish sampled are in relevant maturity stage) is 152 mm standard length (SL), and size at mass maturity (size at which 95% of all fish sampled are in relevant maturity stage) is 167 mm SL. All species of Bathynellacea, known to occur in the immediate vicinity of the sea, belong to the same genus, Hexabathynella gen. n. The species are: H. pauliani, H. knoepffleri, H. tenera. Also included into the new genus are the fresh-water species H. hebrica, H. szidati, H. minuta. To these, a new species, H. halophila sp. n., is added; it was found at a salinity of 27‰ and is the first representative of the Bathynellacea recorded from polyhaline waters. A simple experiment revealed that the new species is likely to be extremely euryhaline. Current opinion as to the marine origin of the Bathynellacea is criticized in the light of new evidence resulting from recent studies on the evolution and systematic relationships within this order. Contrary to common belief, the Bathynellacea did not colonize the fresh-water mesopsammal via the mesopsammal of marine sandy beaches. The extant Bathynellacea most likely derived from ancestors which lived in fresh-water lakes or running surface waters. They became distributed in their mesopsammal habitat. The occurrence of some species of Hexabathynella gen. n. in oligohalime to polyhaline waters is secondary.  相似文献

Two allopatric populations of Cardium edule and two of C. glaucum were sampled over a period of 16 months and their gonad maturity cycles compared by histological methods. The onset of both spermatogenesis and oogenesis in C. edule took place between September and October; in C. glaucum it was slightly later, between October and November. Development of the gonads continued slowly throughout the winter, C. glaucum developing marginally faster than C. edule. Maturation accelerated in April and May, with the gonads of both species becoming fully ripe in late May and early June. Spawning of the two species approximately coincided at all the localities investigated. Spawning in C. edule was better coordinated than in C. glaucum. Transplanting cockles of one species to the typical habitat of the other did not appreciably alter the spawning period. The separation of spawning periods in sympatric associations of the two cockles is discussed.  相似文献
