Spatial distribution of chlorinated hydrocarbons [chlorinated pesticides (CPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)] and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was measured in riverine and estuarine sediment samples from Pearl River Delta, China, collected in 1997. Concentrations of CPs of the riverine sediment samples range from 12 to 158 ng/g, dry weight, while those of PCBs range from 11 to 486 ng/g. The CPs concentrations of the estuarine sediment samples are in the range 6-1658 ng/g, while concentrations of PCBs are in the range 10-339 ng/g. Total PAH concentration ranges from 1168 to 21,329 ng/g in the riverine sediment samples, whereas the PAH concentration ranges from 323 to 14,812 ng/g in the sediment samples of the Estuary. Sediment samples of the Zhujiang River and Macao harbor around the Estuary show the highest concentrations of CPs, PCBs, and PAHs. Possible factors affecting the distribution patterns are also discussed based on the usage history of the chemicals, hydrologic condition, and land erosion due to urbanization processes. The composition of PAHs is investigated and used to assess petrogenic, combustion and naturally derived PAHs of the sediment samples of the Pearl River Delta. In addition, the concentrations of a number of organic compounds of the Pearl River Delta samples indicate that sediments of the Zhujiang river and Macao harbor are most likely to pose biological impairment.  相似文献

Twenty samples of the moss species Hylocomium splendens and Pleurozium schreberi were collected at 10 sites of the Holy Cross Mountains (south-central Poland) and analyzed for 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and 33 elements. The ring sequence of PAHs in the moss samples is: 4 (92-1040 ng x g(-1))>3 and 5 (21-272 ng x g(-1))>6 (<5-131 ng x g(-1)). H. splendens accumulates PAHs more effectively than P. schreberi, and therefore the former may be regarded as a better bioindicator of PAHs. No correlation was found between concentrations of PAHs and elements. However, both H. splendens and P. schreberi shows different bioaccumulative capabilities depending on the plant communities. The mosses growing in the dry pine forest Cladonio-Pinetum reveal higher levels of Fe, Na, Sr, Ti, Cr, Mo, Ni, V and higher mean concentrations of summation operator16 PAHs, whereas those from the continental coniferous forest Querco roboris-Pinetum are highlighted by elevated levels of B, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, P, Rb and Sb and lower mean concentrations of summation operator16 PAHs. These differences seem to be brought about by a higher biodiversity of the second forest type and its higher productivity that favors more effective cycling of elements.  相似文献

Abstract

Air samples of particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 µm (PM10) were collected from six sites in Bangkok, Thailand, using high-volume air samplers. Daily samples were taken at intervals of 12 days from November 1999 to November 2000. Size-selected sampling using a multislit Andersen size-fractionated cascade impactor was undertaken at one site in central Bangkok to identify particulate size distribution. The annual average PM10 concentration at all six sites exceeded the Thailand National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) of 50 µg/m3. The daily PM10 concentrations at heavy traffic roadside areas ranged between 30 and 160 µg/m3. The highest PM10 level occurred during the winter period (November–February), which is the dry season. From our results, which are based on a 1-yr survey, it can be observed that the particulate concentrations are associated with traffic volumes and seasonal factors (temperature and rainfall). The relative importance of size fractions in contributing to PM load is presented and discussed. Twenty polycyclic aromatic hydro-carbons (PAHs) associated with PM have been identified and quantified. The summed PAHs based on the 20 species had an average concentration of 60 ng/m3. Benzo(e)pyrene, indeno(123cd)pyrene, and benzo(ghi)perylene were the major compounds with average concentrations of 8, 10, and 13 ng/m3, respectively. Results indicate that more than 97% of PAHs were found in the small particulate size range of <0.95 µm.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been investigated in Daya Bay, China. The total concentration of the 16 USEPA priority PAHs in surface sediments ranged from 42.5 to 158.2 ng/g dry weight with a mean concentration of 126.2 ng/g. The spatial distribution of PAHs was site-specific and combustion processes were the main source of PAHs in the surface sediments. Total 16 priority PAH concentration in the cores 8 and 10 ranged from 77.4 to 305.7 ng/g and from 118.1 to 319.9 ng/g respectively. The variation of the 16 PAH concentrations in both cores followed the economic development in China very well and was also influenced by input pathways. Some of the PAHs were petrogenic in core 8 while pyrolytic source was dominant in core 10. In addition, pyrolytic PAHs in both cores were mainly from the coal and/or grass and wood combustion.  相似文献

High mountains may serve both as condenser for vapor phase persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and as barrier/sink for particulate associated less volatile POPs. The fractionation of POPs along altitudinal profiles is of interest in understanding the role of high mountains in the atmospheric transport of POPs. In the present study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a selected moss species, Hypnum plumaeformae WILS, from two altitudinal profiles on the northern slope of Nanling mountains in Southern China were analyzed and compared with those in air samples. The total PAH concentration in the mosses was 310–1340 ng g−1 dry weight, with phenanthrene being the most abundant. The distribution patterns of PAHs in the moss samples matched well with those in bulk atmosphere deposition in the adjacent source areas. The PAH distribution pattern in the mosses was a composite of both particle-associated and vapor phase PAHs, with heavy PAHs are susceptible to uptake/retention by mosses than light PAHs. A plot of log (Cmoss/Cair) against log Koa gave a good linear relationship in the log Kao range of 6.7–10.2. It is suggested that the widely spread moss, H. plumaeformae WILS, can be used as an effective tool in the biomonitoring of atmospheric PAHs pollution in East Asia. The concentrations of most PAHs in the mosses generally declined with increasing altitude. In addition, there was a shift in compound pattern with an increase in the proportion of light PAHs (2–3 rings), a decrease in heavy PAHs (5–6 rings) and a relatively stable content of 4-ring PAHs. A combination of particulate scavenging and cold condensation are proposed as the major mechanisms for the compositional fractionation of PAHs along the altitudinal profile.  相似文献

XAD-2 resin-based passive samplers (PAS) with dimensions adapted to 100 mL accelerated solvent extraction cells were used to study the temporal and spatial variations of 17 PAHs on five sites in the atmosphere of southern Luxembourg. This new design allowed extracting the PAS without emptying the resin from the shelter. PAH analyses were done with gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. PAS were deployed for 1 year with varying sampling periodicities, and 16 PAHs were detected with concentrations ranging from 1 ng/PAS for chrysene to 9,727 ng/PAS for naphthalene. The PAS were found adapted to the monitoring of temporal and spatial variations for lightweight PAHs (up to four aromatic rings) though not for heavy PAHs with five aromatic rings or more, as these compounds are preferably in the particle phase of the atmosphere and the amount of these PAHs trapped on the PAS will be too low.  相似文献

In order to investigate the distribution, transfer, and human health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soil-wheat systems, soil samples from 20 farmlands and corresponding wheat tissues were collected from selected regions of Henan Province in June 2013 and were analyzed to estimate the concentration of PAHs. The total concentrations of 15 PAHs (∑15 PAHs) in soils from Henan Province varied from 6.91 to 72.4 ng/g. Moreover, two-ring to three-ring PAHs (1.59–29.1 ng/g) were the major species in soils, occupying 56.2% of total PAHs. Principal component analysis (PCA)-multiple linear regression (MLR) revealed that fossil fuel burning dominated the input of PAHs in agricultural soils of Henan Province. The range of ∑15 PAHs concentrations in wheat tissues was 13.9–50.9 ng/g, which decreased along the root-straw-grain. Positive correlation among PAHs of soil and wheat tissues showed that PAHs in wheat mainly came from soil and then migrated along root-straw-grain. Moreover, PAHs were accumulated highest in root and lowest in grain. Two-ring to three-ring PAHs were easier to transfer from soil to wheat than five-ring to six-ring PAHs. Consumption of wheat grain created potential risk of cancer in Henan Province.

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine (OC) pesticides (HCB, HCHs, CHLs, and DDTs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkylphenols (APs), and bisphenol A (BPA) were measured in 26 marine sediments collected from Yeongil Bay, Korea, in order to characterize their spatial distribution and sources. PCBs (2.85-26.5 ng/g, dry wt.) were detected mainly in the inner bay locations Mean OC pesticide ranged from 1.16 ng/g dry wt. for HCH to 0.05 ng/g dry wt. for HCB). PAH concentrations ranged from <10.0 to 1870 (mean: 309)ng/g dry wt., and were predominated 3- and 4-ring congeners. Concentrations of APs, such as nonylphenol, octylphenol, butylphenol (means 89.1, 4.61, 11.0 ng/g dry wt., respectively), were greater at locations proximal to municipal wastewater discharges. Concentrations of PCBs and PAHs were great near shipyards and industrial complexes. Vertical profiles of PAHs and APs indicated that they have been associated with sediments since the 1950s.  相似文献

This study investigated the spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment of Daliao River watershed composed of the Hun River, Taizi River, and Daliao River. The sources of PAHs were evaluated employing ratios of specific PAHs compounds and principal component analysis (PCA). The total concentrations of PAHs ranged from 946.1 to 13448.5 ng l(-1) in surface water, from 317.5 to 238518.7 ng g(-1) dry weight in SPM, and from 61.9 to 840.5 ng g(-1) dry weight in sediments. The levels of PAHs are relatively higher in water and SPM, and lower in sediments, in comparison with those reported for other rivers and marine systems around the world. The composition of PAHs in these mediums was mainly 4-6 rings PAHs. The higher contents of low molecular weight PAHs in the water and SPM suggest a relatively recent local source of PAHs, entered into the river via wastewater discharge and atmospheric way. On the other hand, the heavy pollution of PAHs in sediment and water near heavy industrial area suggests that PAHs have been released from industrial wastewater.  相似文献

The analysis of the 16 polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) listed as priority pollutants by EPA, was carried out on surface sediments at 32 stations at Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, Mexico. The purpose was to investigate concentration levels, distribution patterns and relate them to three suspected local sources. The PAHs composition of car exhaust, grass and shrubs combustion, and asphalt and tire dust, were all compared to the relative abundance of PAHs signature found on marine sediments of the bay. We used GC-MS analysis in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. The total concentration found was low (from 7.6 to 813 ng/g of dry sediment. The average concentration was 96 ng/g). PAHs concentration was somewhat correlated (r = 0.612; P < 0.05) with organic matter content. Surface distributions suggest depositional patterns conforming to the reported water circulation in the bay. The maximum concentration was found near Todos Santos Canyon. The largest concentrations found were those of fluoranthene (120.6 ng/g), Indene(1,2,3-c,d)pyrene (115.6 ng/g) and pyrene (109.9 ng/g). Percentagewise, the main components were PAHs with three and four rings. Several indexes were used to investigate origins including simple PAH ratios and ternary plots. These indexes and plots suggest the main origin as a combination of urban air and wood and brush fires with little influence of oil.  相似文献

Distribution of the sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) indicated from USEPA as priority pollutants was studied in surface sediments of two coastal areas of the Adriatic Sea. PAHs were recovered from the sediments by solvent extraction and then analyzed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Total concentrations of the analytes in the range 24.1-501.1 ng/g were detected. The observed distribution has been discussed taking into account different aspects, such as the fluvial inputs and the grain size of the sediments. By using a molecular marker approach and characteristic compositional patterns it was possible to ascribe to combustion processes the main source of PAHs. Furthermore a good correlation between benzo[a]pyrene and the total concentration of PAHs (r=0.953) has been pointed out.  相似文献

The concentrations, profiles, sources and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in 40 surface soil samples collected from Beijing, Tianjin and surrounding areas, North China in 2007, and all sampling sites were far from industrial areas, roadsides and other pollution sources, and across a range of soil types in remote, rural villages and urban areas. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 31.6 to 1475.0 ng/g, with an arithmetic average of 336.4 ng/g. The highest PAH concentrations were measured in urban soils, followed by rural village soils and soils from remote locations. The remote-rural village-urban PAH concentration gradient was related to population density, gross domestic product (GDP), long-range atmospheric transport and different types of land use. In addition, the PAH concentration was well correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of the soil. The PAH profile suggested that coal combustion and biomass burning were primary PAH sources.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediments of the South China Sea   总被引:22,自引:0,他引:22
Sixteen sediment samples, collected from the South China Sea, were analyzed for 11 parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Total concentrations of the 11 PAHs studied in the sediments ranged from 24.7 to 275.4 ng/g with a mean of 145.9 ng/g dry sediment. PAH concentrations displayed a consistent distribution trend with the sediment organic carbon content. The linear regression analysis showed that the total concentration of PAHs in the sediment was significantly correlated to the sediment organic carbon content with a correlation coefficient of 0.735 (n=16). Special PAH compound ratios, such as phenanthrene/anthracene and fluoranthene/pyrene, were calculated to evaluate the relative importance of different origins. The collected data showed that pyrolytic input from anthropogenic combustion processes was predominant at almost all the stations investigated. Only one station, located in the proximity of oil wells, appeared to be contaminated predominantly by petrogenic input. Three anthropogenic PAHs, i.e. pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[e]pyrene, exhibited similar distribution patterns in the studied area, implying that these compounds possess identical sources. However, perylene did not entirely follow the distribution trend of the three PAHs, suggesting that the sediment perylene probably derived from other sources such as in situ biogenic origins. Dibenzothiophene, a sulfur heterocyclic aromatic compound, was also measured in this study.  相似文献

Concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil, moss and reindeer dung collected at Ny-Ålesund of the Arctic were measured to investigate their accumulation trends and distribution in the three compartments. Compared with the other regions, the proportions of 2 + 3 ring PAHs to the total PAHs were higher, whereas the proportions of 5 + 6 ring PAHs were lower in the three compartments at Ny-Ålesund. Significant log/log-linear relationship was observed between the sub-cooled liquid vapor pressure and the soil/moss quotient (QSM). The relation was similar to the relationship between the gas/particle partition coefficient (KP) and of PAHs, implying QSM would be a “mirror image” of KP. Excellent log/log-linear relationships were observed between QSM and KOA as well as between the moss/dung quotient (QMD) and KOW. The results presented here indicate the physicochemical properties are suitable for characterizing the distribution of PAHs in soil, moss and reindeer dung.  相似文献

The spatial distribution, composition, and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments and suspended particulate matter (SPM) from the Pearl River Estuary and adjacent coastal areas were examined. Total PAH concentrations varied from 189 to 637 ng/g in sediments and 422 to 1,850 ng/g in SPM. PAHs were dominated by 5,6-ring compounds in sediments and by 2,3-ring compounds in SPM samples. Assessment of PAH sources suggested that biomass and coal combustion is the major PAH source to the outer part of the estuary sediments and that petroleum combustion is the major PAH source to the inner part of estuary sediments. As for SPM samples, PAH isomer pair ratios indicated multiple (petroleum, petroleum combustion, and biomass and coal combustion) PAH sources, and significant temporal variations could exist for the sources of water column PAHs in the study area. The distribution of perylene in SPM samples indicated that the river was the dominant source of perylene in SPM and that perylene could be taken as an index to assess the contribution of river inflow to the total PAHs in SPM samples. The high concentration of perylene in the sediment was indicative of an in situ biogenic origin.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) adsorbed on particulates is of a serious health concern. Levels of some trace metals in total suspended particulate and 13 PAHs of fine particulate matter were measured from nomadic tents in the southern Tibetan Plateau in summer 2010. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The indoor air within the tents was seriously polluted, mainly due to yak dung combustion. Average trace metal concentrations were much higher (range of indoor/outdoor ratio 61-291) than those of the outdoor air. Additionally, enrichment factors of most trace metals of indoor air were similar to those of outdoor air, indicating outdoor air quality of the studied area was possibly influenced by pollutants emitted from local tents. Mean concentrations of total PAHs and BaP within tents was 5372.45 and 364.79 ng/m(3), hundred times higher than that of outdoor air of the Tibetan Plateau. Three- and four-ring PAHs were the predominant components. The diagnostic ratio of BaA/(BaA + Chr) was 0.33. Since Tibetan women typically spend longer time within the tents, they were exposed to PAHs (BaP exposure = 1.81 μg/m(3)) about two times of other family members. Among all the PAHs, Bap contributed the most (82.6%) of the total carcinogenicity. Similarly, the excess lifetime cancer risk for women and other family members were 2.75 × 10(-4) and 1.27 × 10(-4), respectively, indicating Tibetan herdsmen, especially women who are in charge of most house chores were at risk for adverse health effects.  相似文献

To assess the contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the marine environment of Korea, 117 sediment samples along the coast were collected and analyzed. This study provides perspectives on concentration ranges and on geographic distributions of PAHs. Sum of 16 PAHs concentrations are in the range of 8.80-18500 ng/g dry weight. Industrialized and urbanized region showed high level of PAHs contamination. When compared with nationwide monitoring results of USA and UK, concentration of total PAHs are in the order of UK>US>this study. Major PAHs sources inferred from diagnostic indices and statistical approach were both pyrogenic and petrogenic. In coastal and offshore sediments of Korea, 7.76% sites had a mean PAH ERL quotient >1.0, indicating the potential to cause adverse effects in sensitive species. Youngil Bay was recognized as highly contaminated with PAHs, and recommended to be managed with special plan.  相似文献

Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been determined using GC/HRMS in food (butter, seafood and meat) and feed samples (chicken, cattle and fish) purchased from Ismailia city, Egypt. PCDD/F concentrations in food samples ranged between 0.12 and 3.35 pg WHO TEQ/g wet w, while those in feed samples were between 0.08 and 0.2 pg WHO TEQ/g dry w. Levels of PCB TEQ ranged from 0.14 to 3.2 pg/g wet w in the food samples. The feed samples have an average of 0.35 pg PCB TEQ /g dry w. In this study, butter samples showed the highest contamination levels of PCDD/Fs and PCBs. The PCBs contribution to the total TEQ was on average 63% in seafood and on average 49% for meat and butter. The highest contamination levels of PCDD/Fs and PCBs were found in butter samples. The butter TEQ content is several times higher than that reported in all EU countries and exceeded the EU limits, while the PCDD/F levels in seafood and the feed samples is far below the current EU limit. Generally, congener profiles in the food samples reflect the non-industrialized nature of the city and suggest solid waste burning as a significant source of emission. Nevertheless, the profiles for butter suggest an impact from various sources. In the case of the sum of 16 PAH contamination levels in food samples were in the range of 11.7-154.3 ng/g wet w and feed samples had a range of 116-393 ng/g dry w. Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) has been detected in the range of 0.05-3.29 ng/g wet w in the food samples; butter showed the highest contamination which exceeded the EU standard set for fats and oil. Fingerprints of PAHs suggested both petrogenic and pyrolytic sources of contamination.  相似文献
