Growth and age of Chaetodon larvatus were studied using growth bands in otoliths and length-frequency analyses. Otoliths of 180 C. larvatus were extracted and measured. Polished sections of sagittae revealed alternating opaque and translucent bands corresponding with a seasonal growth pattern. Both mass and size of the otoliths continue to grow steadily throughout life. Length-at-age data revealed very fast growth during the first year. Growth proceeded at a decreasing rate during the second and the third year; fishes older than 3 years did not grow noticeably. No difference in growth patterns between males and females could be detected. The growth parameters obtained for the whole population are: the asymptotic length (L )=10.64 cm, growth constant (K)=1.14 year−1 and the theoretical age at length zero (t 0)=−0.30 year. The maximum age recorded was 14 years. Length frequency data collected at a recruitment site confirmed the fast growth of juveniles.  相似文献

Mysella bidentata (Montagu) is found in high densities in an Amphiura filiformis (O. F. Müller) community in Inner Galway Bay, west coast of Ireland. As part of an ongoing investigation at one station within this community, the population dynamics and reproductive pattern of this bivalve were investigated during the period November 1978-December 1981. Monthly sampling over the 3 yr period revealed a mean population density of 745±672 individuals m-2. Recruitment occurred during August-October and three year-classes were identified. Growth rates were assessed by analysis of length-frequency histograms and winter growth checks. Individuals from the Y1 and Y2 year-classes functioned as hermaphrodites during the 1980 and 1981 reproductive seasons. The Y0 year-class contained both males and hermaphrodites. Results are compared with available information on the same species from other locations.Contribution No. 225 from the School of Marine Sciences, University College, Galway Ireland  相似文献

The transparent goby Aphia minuta (Risso, 1810) is one of the main target species of the small-scale fishery off the Island of Majorca. Otolith microstructure and length-frequency analysis were used to study the age and growth of this species during the 1982/1983 and 1992/1993 fishing seasons. Daily periodicity of increment formation was determined by experiments with marked otoliths in individuals maintained in captivity. The length range of the catches during the 11 yr period was between 12 and 49 mm, with a main distribution (89%) between 24 and 40 mm. Otolith age-readings indicate that the population exploited in the commercial fishery consists of seven age-groups (2 to 8 mo old), with a very high proportion of individuals (95%) between 3 and 6 mo old. Population growth-curves revealed no differences between males and females. The growth parameters for the whole population are: asymptotic length, L = 53.69 mm; growth coefficient, K = 2.23 yr−1; theoretical age at length zero, t 0 = −0.005 yr. Those individuals of A. minuta caught in Majorca during the winter period reached a maximum age of 7 or 8 mo. Received: 30 December 1996 / Accepted: 16 April 1997  相似文献

The age, growth and mortality of the lanternfish Lampanyctodes hectoris (Gunther) were investigated by examining the otoliths, length-frequency data, and seasonal abundance of fish collected from continental slope waters of eastern Tasmania between April 1984 and June 1985. Although L. hectoris can live to 3 yr old, it has a high annual mortality (79%) and few live past their first year. Growth, described here by a variation of the Von Bertalanffy model, takes place mainly in the first six months of life and only during late spring and summer. The hypothesis of daily deposition of primary growth increments in myctophids was supported by comparing the back-calculated birth dates of daily-aged individuals of L. hectoris with the spawning season of this species.  相似文献

Determination of basic population parameters in long-lived Crustacea is hindered by a lack of appropriate methods for age determination. This study uses the pigment lipofuscin as an age marker in the common Antarctic decapod Notocrangon antarcticus (Pfeffer, 1887) from the eastern Weddell Sea. Resin brain sections of the lateral somacluster of the olfactory lobe of 189 specimens were digitally recorded by confocal microscopy and images were subsequently analyzed. A modal progression analysis of the lipofuscin concentration–frequency distribution revealed a total of eight regularly spaced modes presumed to reflect consecutive annual age classes. All eight modes contained females, and the first four contained males. No regular modes were obvious in the comparable length-frequency distribution. The average yearly pigment accumulation was nearly linear and estimated as 0.02% area fraction year−1, which is considerably lower than rates published for species from lower latitudes. This is probably explained by the effect of low water temperature on metabolism and lipofuscin accumulation rate. The growth parameters CL and k from the von Bertalanffy growth function were 22.3 mm and 0.79 year−1 for females, respectively, and 16.9 mm and 0.64 year−1 for males, respectively. Mortality, estimated from catch curves, amounted to 0.44 year−1 in females and 0.92 year−1 in males, whereas P/B, calculated from the mass specific growth rate method, was slightly lower. The results indicate that the lipofuscin-inferred population parameters are an improvement over what can be learned about N. antarcticus with traditional methods. Recruitment variability plays a critical role in determining local population densities of benthic organisms, but extreme vulnerability at the onset of juvenile life is a trait that is largely responsible for population survivorship trends. The aim of the present study was to determine the role of juvenile recruitment in the population structure of Necora puber. Juveniles of N. puber were collected from the lower intertidal of rocky shores of Plymouth Sound (southwest coast of the UK) and monthly size–frequency distribution were used to determine the dynamics and the growth of the population. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function were estimated (K=0.281 year−1; t 0=0.043; C=0.103; and t s=0.268) assuming a L =105 mm. Growth was markedly seasonal and present results indicated a slower juvenile growth rate than described previously for N. puber. The recruitment period was extensive and was two times higher in 2001 than in 2000 at the start of the 1+ year, but levelled off at the end of the 1+ year class on three of the four shores studied. Instantaneous mortality as high as 5.1 year−1(99.4% year−1) was observed during the higher recruitment year. Early juvenile mortality appears to be density dependent and a demographic bottleneck appears to limit the number of juveniles on some shores.  相似文献

The growth of 24 species of demersal fish caught off the Sinaloa-Nayarit coast and in the Gulf of Tehuantepec (Mexican Pacific Ocean) was determined by means of length-frequency analysis. Fishes constitute an important bycatch of the penaeid shrimp fishery, and 235 species were identified in catches made on research cruises in both areas in 1989 to 1992. Growth rates (cm yr-1) ranged from 0.13 cm for lutjanids and serranids to 0.95 cm for the carangid Selene peruviana; the other species displayed growth rates within this range. Growth varied seasonally, with minimum growth in spring, and is probably related to seasonal changes in the waters of the area. By means of length-frequency analysis, we determined von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the primary species of this multispecies fishery. Such data is fundamental for the future commercial exploitation of these fishes.  相似文献

Pholoë minuta (Fabricius) is a prominent member of the Amphiura filiformis (O.F. Müller) subcommunity in Galway Bay, Ireland. The aim of the present investigation was to study the population dynamics and reproductive cycle of P. minuta in this area. Monthly sampling over a 2 yr period (November 1978–October 1980), at a permanent station (18 m) with a fine sand substrate, revealed a mean density of 96 individuals per 0.1 m2. The width of the fifth elytron was correlated with total body length and was used as a basis for analysing population structure. Four distinct year classes were evident and estimates of recruitment levels and growth rates were calculated. P. minuta is polytelic and reproduces for the first time when approaching 3 yr of age. Spawning occurred in March—April and appeared to be associated with a seasonal low in bottom-water temperature.  相似文献

Pholoe minuta is a numerically dominant member of the Amphiura filiformis subcommunity in Galway Bay. A longterm (5 yr) assessment of its population structure highlighted the shortfall in information regarding juvenile stages in the post-spawning months. Additional remote and in situ sampling programmes (including the use of a Muus sampling device), covering two successive postspawning periods, were undertaken to provide information on the juvenile recruits. Estimates of density levels (130 to 680 m-2), growth rates (doubling in size in 2 mo) and mortalities (80%) were calculated for the newly settled P. minuta. Mean monthly densities, seasonal population structure, recruitment levels (21.1%), growth (1 mm per annum) and survivorship patterns of the adult population were evaluated using the dorsal width of the fifth chaetiger, which is shown to be a suitable parameter of total body size. The success of grab sampling as a method for examining early settlement of P. minuta is critically reviewed, and a recommendation for future benthic population studies is proposed.  相似文献

The northern propellerclam Cyrtodaria siliqua is a common bycatch in the Arctic surfclam, Mactromeris polynyma fishery on Banquereau Bank in Eastern Canada. Samples of the propellerclam from this exploited fishery were used to determine the life history characteristics of the population. The age structure of the population is dominated by old animals to ages exceeding 100 years. We validated the age estimates for the propellerclam through analysis of bomb-produced radiocarbon in the shell growth increments deposited before, during and after the atmospheric atomic bomb testing periods of the 1950s and 1960s. Radiocarbon from shells with presumed birth dates between the late 1950s and 1970s clearly reflected the sharp increase in oceanic radiocarbon attributable to previous nuclear testing, indicating that age estimates based on shell increment counts are accurate. Estimates of von Bertalanffy growth parameters revealed that the growth rate of the population was relatively rapid for the first 20 years of life, slowing down to very low growth rates thereafter. Sexual maturity was estimated as being reached at 28.6 mm in length and 4.7 years in age. Size–weight morphometric relationships were also calculated.  相似文献

The effects of the widespread polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fluoranthene on sediment-processing rates in the infaunal polychaete Capitella spp. were investigated by comparing five populations of this deposit-feeding species complex: Capitella sp. I from New York, USA; Capitella sp. M from Milos, Greece; Capitella sp. S from Sylt, Germany; and two unidentified Capitella populations from salmon farm sediments –Capitella population K from Kilmelford, Scotland and Capitella population C from Cranford, Ireland. Replicate worms from each strain were exposed to 0, 10, and 95 μg (g dry wt sediment)−1 fluoranthene (=μg/g fluoranthene) for a period of 16 days. Initial and final wet and dry weights (mg) of worms and worm-specific growth rates (WSGRs) were calculated. Sediment processing was measured as the sum of the total dry weight of pellets produced during the experiment, and we estimated size-specific processing rates (SSPRs) as a measure of sediment processed per mg worm dry weight per day. The five populations of Capitella spp. differed significantly in body size, WSGR, and sediment-processing rates. Capitella sp. I grew faster than all of the other populations. Capitella population C and Capitella population K from fish farm sediments, with the largest body lengths (up to 52.0 ± 27.2 mm), had the highest processing rates, whereas the small Capitella sp. S (up to 17.1 ± 5.6 mm) had the lowest. There were also significant differences in SSPR among populations with Capitella sp. I having a higher SSPR (about 12 × body wt/day) than Capitella population C (about 5 × body wt/day) and Capitella population K (3 × body wt/day). The fluoranthene concentrations used in the present study, while representing moderately to highly contaminated conditions, had only marginal effects on sediment-processing and growth rates of all of the Capitella populations examined. Processing of contaminated sediment by Capitella spp. may be important in the remediation of PAH-contaminated sediment. Received: 16 January 2000 / Accepted: 28 August 2000  相似文献

The spanner crab (Ranina ranina) is a widespread and abundant brachyuran in offshore sand substrata of the Indo-Pacific region. Little is known of this species biology, population dynamics and ecology, despite it being the target of commercial fishing operations in many areas. Previous studies of R. ranina growth using length-frequency analysis of samples collected with commercial fishing gear have derived widely divergent estimates of growth parameters. The estimated time taken to reach 100 mm rostral carapace length (minimum legally exploited size in Queensland, Australia) in those studies has ranged from 1.75 to 8.83 years for females and from 1.08 to 3.58 years for males. Our data show that the commercial fishing apparatus used in those studies is size selective and catches only adult crabs. The resulting size bias in samples collected using that apparatus precludes the application of length-frequency-based techniques to estimate growth parameters from those samples. We devised a new dredge to collect samples of juvenile R. ranina and to calculate juvenile growth rates from modal progression in those samples. We combined those data with estimated mean maximum lengths (L) of 121.7 mm for females and 155.9 mm for males from commercial catch data to model other von Bertalanffy growth parameters using bootstrap methods. Those modelled parameters (K=0.29, T0=–0.24 for females; K=0.23, T0=–0.25 for males) indicate that R. ranina grows more slowly than most previous estimates suggest, with females requiring an average of 6.35 years and males 4.31 years to reach 100 mm rostral carapace length. This slow growth is consistent with the slow metabolism of R. ranina, and indicates that this species would be likely to recover slowly from overexploitation.Communicated by G.F. The MULTIFAN method of Fournier et al. was used to analyse a series of monthly length-frequency distributions of deep-water royal red prawns (Haliporoides sibogae de Man, 1907, Solenoceridae) for the estimation of growth, mortality and yield-per-recruit. Length data were collected from commercial catches made between Latitude 33° and 35°S from November 1988 to May 1990. MULTIFAN distinguished six cohorts in the royal red prawn population, aged at 6 mo intervals from about 1.5 to 4 yr. Most prawns were between 2 and 3 yr of age. Females and males were fully recruited at 23.1 and 21.5 mm carapace length (CL) respectively, when about 2 yr old. Females grew faster and reached larger sizes at age than males (growth coefficient, K=0.37 yr-1 and asymptotic length, L =48.3 mm CL for females, and K=0.49 yr-1 and L =33.5 mm CL for males). Total mortality (Z) was estimated at 1.6 and 1.2 yr-1 for females and males, respectively. Approximate values for natural mortality (M) ranged from 0.6 to 0.7 yr-1 for females, and from 0.4 to 0.8 yr-1 for males. Analysis of yield-per-recruit suggested that while the current yield could possibly be increased by decreasing the length at first capture (L c ), there seems to be little potential for an increase in yield from increased fishing effort in the area currently fished.  相似文献

Samples from a series of RMT-8 tows along 20°W in spring and autumn of various years were used to study the variability in aspects of the breeding biology of two species of Cyclothone: C. braueri and C. microdon in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean. Variables compared within each species included length-frequency distribution, maximum size, size at maturity, sex ratio, egg size and fecundity. Populations of both species at lower latitudes were generally smaller, reached maturity at a smaller size, and probably spawned earlier in the year and over a longer period than populations at higher latitudes. In both species, fecundity was highest at 40°N in the spring. The results suggested that C. microdon may not spawn at the northern extent of its range.  相似文献

The relationship between reproduction and condition was studied in a 15 mo sample of 919 maturing, mature and post-spawning female Octopus mimus (388 to 3714 g) caught in Iquique (North Chile). O. mimus is a semelparous species, with reproduction taking place all year round. Investment in reproductive tissues was, on average, 9.9% of mature female body weight, independent of season. However, somatic growth during maturation was dependent on season and varied between 26 and 63% of the whole-body growth in weight. The condition of females did not vary markedly until spawning, although seasonal variations were apparent, winter being the most unfavourable. Condition deteriorated dramatically after spawning, during parental care of the eggs. During this period, somatic-tissue depletion, mainly from the muscles, was >25% of the total body weight of mature females. The fecundity of O. mimus was probably limited by the costs associated with parental care of the eggs.  相似文献

The frostfish Lepidopus caudatus (Euphrasen, 1788) is a mesopelagic species; it occurs along the shelf and slope down to 450 m in the Catalan Sea. Its' fishery, population structure, growth, diet and reproduction was studied on the basis of commercial statistics from 1984 to 1990 and on samplings made in 1988 and 1989. L. caudatus is fished by two types of commercial method, trawl and long-line; catches by the latter method display a marked seasonality. The minimum size of fish caught is 26 cm total length by trawling and 71 cm by long-line. Maximum sizes are similar for both gears: 196 and 188 cm, respectively. L. caudatus exhibits fast growth and attains an age of 8 yr. It feeds on small mesopelagic prey. It is a partial spawner reproductive activity occurring from April to November. Males attain sexual maturity at 97 cm and females at 111 cm total length.  相似文献

In corals where complex life history processes decoupling age from size (e.g., fragmentation, fusion, partial colony mortality) are rare or clearly detectable, individual age may be determined from size, and age-based growth and population dynamic models may be applied. One example is the solitary Mediterranean coral Leptopsammia pruvoti Lacaze-Duthiers 1897, whose population size and structure, and growth rates were determined at Calafuria (43°28′N and 10°20′E), Ligurian Sea, from December 2007 to June 2009. Growth rate decreased with increasing size. The growth curve derived from field measurements confirmed the one obtained by growth band analysis. The frequency of individuals decreased exponentially with age, indicating a steady state population. Turnover time was 2.3 years. Maximum life span was 13 years. Most reproductive output was from intermediate age classes (6 years), while older individuals (>7 years), although having higher fecundity, were rare and accounted for a minority of population reproductive output. In comparison with other solitary dendrophylliids, L. pruvoti life strategy was characterized by a reproduction with r-strategy correlates (high fecundity, short embryo incubation, small planula size, fast achievement of sexual maturity), and a rate of demographic renewal occurring halfway along the rK continuum (intermediate turnover time and maximum longevity).  相似文献

A high-density population of the polychaeteMelinna palmata Grube was the focus of a two-year study at a shallow-water location in Inner Galway Bay on the west coast of Ireland. Mean densities were highest in the second year of the study following successful recruitment. Size-frequency analysis of population structure (April 1983 to March 1985) revealed the presence of four cohorts, with the 1983 settlement becoming the dominant modal class. Size comparison of this cohort with the 1982 settlement showed that growth rates were lower and mortality higher in the 1983 settlement, which may be related to density dependent intra-specific competition.M. palmata at this location live for 2 to 2.5 yr with a small number surviving to 3 yr of age.M. palmata in Galway Bay is dioecious and has an even sex ratio. Reproductively mature worms were approximately 2 yr old when they first spawned. Spawning took place between May and July, when mature oocytes had a modal size of ca. 290µm. Proliferation of previtellogenic oocytes (ca. 10µm) from the gonads occurred following spawning. Growth over the winter was slow and was followed by a period of rapid growth between March and May, coincident with rising water temperatures. The presence of mature unspawned oocytes, which were resorbed after commencement of new proliferation, was taken as evidence of the species propensity for polytely. However, post-spawning mortality appeared to be high, so that only a small number of individuals survived to spawn the following year. The highest abundance of mature males was encountered between May and August, but lower levels of mature stages were present throughout the year.  相似文献

Summary Genetic relatedness and mating structure of the red ant, Myrmica ruginodis, were studied from a large data set in several natural populations, one of which was a substructured archipelago population. Within-colony relatedness of worker nestmates was measured as genotypic correlation and mating structure as deviation from random mating; both were calculated from the genotype frequency data. The average relatedness of worker nestmates was rather high across populations (0.43–0.73), and random mating was the rule within populations. The data were used to deduce the social structure of populations. With one possible exception, populations turned out to be weakly polygynous, implying that they consisted of the macrogyne form of the species. The exceptional population was relatively more polygynous and inbred, suggesting that it might include the microgyne form. This exceptional population lived in a habitat not noticeably different from that of the other populations, challenging previous suggestions of the habitat specialization of the two forms. The colonies were facultatively polygynous, and a comparison with earlier studies shows that polygyny is functional. Relatedness of worker nestmates varied slightly among populations, indicating that the social structure of Myrmica colonies is flexible.  相似文献

Understanding the demography and function of biotope-forming seaweed species is of great importance for the conservation of the target species itself, as well as its associated organisms. The brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum is fundamental for the functioning of coastal marine ecosystems in the North Atlantic. In this study, we use a data-based size-classified matrix model to investigate the temporal and spatial variability in demography, and the environment-specific stochastic sensitivity and elasticity, of two A. nodosum populations, one in western Sweden and one on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. A significant difference between the two populations was that the Swedish population had comparably low and more variable stochastic population growth rate (λ s). This pattern was partly explained by the relatively high and varying mortality rates during extreme ice-years in Sweden, and by the lower survival of small individuals during all years. There were also fewer large individuals in Sweden due to lower transitions to the larger size-classes and higher probability of shrinkage. Sensitivities were analogous in the two populations, and showed a high selection pressure for increased individual growth. Elasticities were also similar, with the exception that survival of the smallest individuals (i.e., transition a 1,1), had a higher elasticity on the Isle of Man. Overall, the stochastic growth rate (λ s) was most sensitive to proportional changes in loop- (i.e., survival within size-class) and, to some extent, growth-transitions in both study areas. These results show that structurally and demographically diverging A. nodosum populations may be similarly sensitive to changes in vital rates. This, in turn, indicates a plastic life history of A. nodosum that may cope with large environmental variability. The results further suggest that environmental change affecting the survival or growth of the larger, reproductive A. nodosum individuals could have severe and regional effects on the abundance and biomass of this species, with potential negative effects on the biodiversity of the associated communities.  相似文献
