This paper presents a spatially explicit trade-off analysis of species conservation in agricultural areas. A spatially explicit model is presented that integrates an applied metapopulation model with a farm management model. The model is used to calculate production possibilities frontiers of net monetary benefits from agriculture and conservation of three species with different habitats. Simulations of spatial habitat allocation under European agri-environment schemes are compared to these production possibilities frontiers. The results suggest that the cost-effectiveness of current conservation policies may be greatly enhanced if the spatial dimension is considered explicitly. 相似文献

Summary Despite of decades of successful worldwide use of magnetic/electromagnetic field therapy, the answer to the question of possible
mechanisms of action is still lacking. Scientific reports of successful therapeutic use of magnetic/electromagnetic fields
are worldwide; however, our understanding of the underlying mechanism is limited. This paper presents a new hypothesis that
therapeutic benefit of magnetic fields might result from effects that originated on the level of important systems in human
body. It is known now that the life is an electromagnetic event in aqueous medium. Therefore, an appropriate choice of magnetic
and/or electromagnetic field may be expected to initiate systemic changes that result in efficacious effects distant from
the point of application. Observations of this phenomenon have been reported in at least two forms: (1) neutralization of
the pain experience distant to the point of magnetic field exposure; and, (2) various alterations of T-lymphocytes in response
to pain and to magnetic fields. Extrapolating these observations to the level of blood-vessel system, one might hypothesize
that a “healthy” cell does not respond as readily to the applied fields as do abnormal cells (which are in a disease or injury
state). 相似文献

Non-point-source pollution of surface and groundwater is a prominent environmental issue in rural catchments, with major consequences on water supply and aquatic ecosystem quality. Among surface-water protection measures, environmental or landscape management policies support the implementation and the management of buffer zones. Although a great number of studies have focused on buffer zones, quantification of the buffer effect is still a recurring question. The purpose of this article is a critical review of the assessment of buffer-zone functioning. Our objective is to provide land planners and managers with a set of variables to assess the limits and possibilities for quantifying buffer impact at the catchment scale. We first consider the scale of the local landscape feature. The most commonly used empirical method for assessing buffers is to calculate water/nutrient budgets from inflow–outflow monitoring at the level of landscape structures. We show that several other parameters apart from mean depletion of flux can be used to describe buffer functions. Such parameters include variability, with major implication for water management. We develop a theoretical framework to clarify the assessment of the buffer effect and propose a systematic analysis taking account of temporal variability. Second, we review the current assessment of buffer effects at the catchment scale according to the theoretical framework established at the local scale. Finally, we stress the limits of direct empirical assessment at the catchment scale and, in particular, we emphasize the hierarchy in hydrological processes involved at the catchment scale: The landscape feature function is constrained by other factors (climate and geology) that are of importance at a broader spatial and temporal scale.Published on line 相似文献

Cross-Boundary Coordination on Forested Landscapes: Investigating Alternatives for Implementation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Cross-boundary coordination is a tool for ecosystem management whereby landowners voluntarily coordinate management practices
toward economic and/or ecological landscape-scale outcomes (e.g., fiber, invasive species control, habitat). Past research
indicates that it may be particularly applicable on landscapes that include small forest landholdings. To explore alternatives
by which coordination might occur, we conducted seven focus groups with landowners (n = 51) who actively manage their forests in southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa. Focus group participants were presented
with three hypothetical alternatives to coordinate with their neighbors; landowners could self-organize, work with a natural
resource professional (i.e., forester), or work with an organization to complete a cross-boundary practice. In this article,
we focus on the latter two alternatives and the role of two social theories—principal-agent and cooperation—in explaining
landowners’ evaluations of these alternatives. Key findings are that (1) cross-boundary coordination has the potential to
alleviate problems between landowners and resource professionals inherent to their typical working relationship, and (2) social
relationships are a major factor contributing to landowners’ willingness to participate. We posit that cross-boundary coordination
offers a non-economic incentive for landowners to work together as it may reduce the uncertainty associated with hiring a
resource professional. At the same time, professionals can provide a bridging function among landowners who are unacquainted.
To achieve these outcomes and expand the adoption of cross-boundary coordination, we suggest four guidelines. First, foster
dialogue among landowners toward shared cognition and oversight. Second, match landowners’ practices and objectives such that
there are clear benefits to all. Third, develop relationships through low risk activities where possible. Fourth, do not expect
on-going commitments.

Wigington, Parker J., Jr., Scott G. Leibowitz, Randy L. Comeleo, and Joseph L. Ebersole, 2012. Oregon Hydrologic Landscapes: A Classification Framework. Journal of the American Water Resources Association (JAWRA) 1‐20. DOI: 10.1111/jawr.12009 Abstract: There is a growing need for hydrologic classification systems that can provide a basis for broad‐scale assessments of the hydrologic functions of landscapes and watersheds and their responses to stressors such as climate change. We developed a hydrologic landscape (HL) classification approach that describes factors of climate‐watershed systems that control the hydrologic characteristics of watersheds. Our assessment units are incremental watersheds (i.e., headwater watersheds or areas draining directly into stream reaches). Major components of the classification include indices of annual climate, climate seasonality, aquifer permeability, terrain, and soil permeability. To evaluate the usefulness of our approach, we identified 30 rivers with long‐term streamflow‐gauging records and without major diversions and impoundments. We used statistical clustering to group the streams based on the shapes of their annual hydrographs. Comparison of the streamflow clusters and HL distributions within river basin clusters shows that the Oregon HL approach has the ability to provide insights about the expected hydrologic behavior of HLs and larger river basins. The Oregon HL approach has potential to be a useful framework for comparing hydrologic attributes of streams and rivers in the Pacific Northwest. 相似文献

Organic Farming Benefits Local Plant Diversity in Vineyard Farms Located in Intensive Agricultural Landscapes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The majority of research on organic farming has considered arable and grassland farming systems in Central and Northern Europe,
whilst only a few studies have been carried out in Mediterranean agro-systems, such as vineyards, despite their economic importance.
The main aim of the study was to test whether organic farming enhances local plant species richness in both crop and non-crop
areas of vineyard farms located in intensive conventional landscapes. Nine conventional and nine organic farms were selected
in an intensively cultivated region (i.e. no gradient in landscape composition) in northern Italy. In each farm, vascular
plants were sampled in one vineyard and in two non-crop linear habitats, grass strips and hedgerows, adjacent to vineyards
and therefore potentially influenced by farming. We used linear mixed models to test the effect of farming, and species longevity
(annual vs. perennial) separately for the three habitat types. In our intensive agricultural landscapes organic farming promoted
local plant species richness in vineyard fields, and grassland strips while we found no effect for linear hedgerows. Differences
in species richness were not associated to differences in species composition, indicating that similar plant communities were
hosted in vineyard farms independently of the management type. This negative effect of conventional farming was probably due
to the use of herbicides, while mechanical operations and mowing regime did not differ between organic and conventional farms.
In grassland strips, and only marginally in vineyards, we found that the positive effect of organic farming was more pronounced
for perennial than annual species. 相似文献

Defining and putting into practice sustainable land use is a complex, systemic problem. Systems models and techniques were used in a study of Herefordshire to clarify the situation and identify the potential for a more locally focused, learning-based approach to land use. Issues included: (i) uncertainty about the boundary of a 'system of sustainable Herefordshire land use'; (ii) the complexity of economic flows in the county and the absence of some critical data; (iii) the importance of the Herefordshire landscape to tourism and the role of agriculture as a determinant of the state of that landscape; (iv) weakness of the institutional linkage between tourism and agriculture; (v) the current lack of inclusion of many relevant stakeholders in concerted action. Factors favouring a learning approach included a strong local identity, local food-related developments, and educational initiatives. Barriers to such an approach included questions of power and landholding, government policies, and attitudes and skills within organizations. These findings are considered in relation to the wider debate over approaches to sustainability. 相似文献

The aim of this work is the analysis of the dynamics in cultural landscapes, focused on the spatial distribution of changes
in land cover and landscape patterns, and their possible linkages. These dynamics have been analyzed for the years 1957 and
2000 in a sector of the north of Galicia (NW Spain) characterized with diverse landscapes. Afforestation processes linked
to agriculture abandonment and forestry specialization were the main processes observed in the study area, with the exception
of the southern mountainous sector that was dominated by ploughing of scrubland for conversion into grassland, reflecting
a specialization in livestock production. The structural changes that have taken place in most of the study area were related
to the heterogeneity aspects, although the mountainous sectors were characterized by changes in heterogeneity and fragmentation.
According to the tests performed, the comparison of the spatial distribution of both dynamics showed a certain statistical
significance, reflecting the interrelationship between patterns and processes. This approach could be useful for the identification
of areas with similar characteristics in terms of spatial dynamics so as to define more effective and targeted landscape planning
and management strategies. 相似文献

The intent of this paper is to operationalize some aspects of local sustainability in a suitable development scenario and to compare its energy-use and environmental impacts to trend development. After a discussion of suburban sprawl, local sustainability, and the current state of the Pennypack Creek Watershed in the Philadelphia metro region, these residential location scenarios are presented. The latter were created using geographic information systems software and are based on projections from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. The impacts of the scenarios on energy use, air emissions, greenhouse gas emissions, water quality, and biological integrity were estimated with very few data, and the effect on the value of generic ecosystem services was assessed. The suitable development scenario was 29% better in terms of energy use and air and greenhouse gas emissions, 2.4% worse on water quality, and 2.6% better with respect to biological integrity. Given its net beneficial results, recommendations for policies to engender suitable development are made, and an outline of an implementation plan is proposed. Thoughts regarding refinements of the present work and the applicability of the methods used here to other watersheds conclude the work. 相似文献

Landscapes of Protection: Forest Change and Fragmentation in Northern West Bengal,India 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

In the tropics and sub-tropics, where high levels of biodiversity co-exist with some of the greatest levels of population
density, achieving complete exclusion in protected area contexts has proved close to impossible. There is a clear need to
recognize that parks are significantly impacted by human–environment interactions in the larger landscape within which they
are embedded, and to move the frontier of research beyond the boundaries of protected areas in order to examine larger landscapes
where multiple forms of ownership and access are embedded. This research evaluates forest change and fragmentation between
1990 and 2000, in a landscape surrounding the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary in the Indian state of West Bengal. This protected
forest is bounded to the south by a less intensively protected area, the Baikunthapur Reserve Forest, and surrounded by a
mosaic of unprotected, largely private land holdings. Results indicate differences in the extent and spatial pattern of forest
cover change in these three zones, corresponding to different levels of government protection, access and monitoring. The
two protected areas experience a trend toward forest regrowth, relating to the cessation of commercial logging by park management
during this period. Yet, there is still substantial clearing toward peripheral areas that are well connected to illegal timber
markets by transportation networks. The surrounding landscape, although experiencing some forest regrowth within less intensively
cultivated tea plantations, is also becoming increasingly fragmented, with potentially critical impacts on the maintenance
of effective wildlife corridors in this ecologically critical region. 相似文献

Worldwide, the ecological condition of streams and rivers has been impaired by agricultural practices such as broadscale modification of catchments, high nutrient and sediment inputs, loss of riparian vegetation, and altered hydrology. Typical responses include channel incision, excessive sedimentation, declining water quality, and loss of in-stream habitat complexity and biodiversity. We review these impacts, focusing on the potential benefits and limitations of wood reintroduction as a transitional rehabilitation technique in these agricultural landscapes using Australian examples. In streams, wood plays key roles in shaping velocity and sedimentation profiles, forming pools, and strengthening banks. In the simplified channels typical of many agricultural streams, wood provides habitat for fauna, substrate for biofilms, and refuge from predators and flow extremes, and enhances in-stream diversity of fish and macroinvertebrates. Most previous restoration studies involving wood reintroduction have been in forested landscapes, but some results might be extrapolated to agricultural streams. In these studies, wood enhanced diversity of fish and macroinvertebrates, increased storage of organic material and sediment, and improved bed and bank stability. Failure to meet restoration objectives appeared most likely where channel incision was severe and in highly degraded environments. Methods for wood reintroduction have logistical advantages over many other restoration techniques, being relatively low cost and low maintenance. Wood reintroduction is a viable transitional restoration technique for agricultural landscapes likely to rapidly improve stream condition if sources of colonists are viable and water quality is suitable. 相似文献

Ecological Engineering Practices for the Reduction of Excess Nitrogen in Human-Influenced Landscapes: A Guide for Watershed Managers 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Excess nitrogen (N) in freshwater systems, estuaries, and coastal areas has well-documented deleterious effects on ecosystems. Ecological engineering practices (EEPs) may be effective at decreasing nonpoint source N leaching to surface and groundwater. However, few studies have synthesized current knowledge about the functioning principles, performance, and cost of common EEPs used to mitigate N pollution at the watershed scale. Our review describes seven EEPs known to decrease N to help watershed managers select the most effective techniques from among the following approaches: advanced-treatment septic systems, low-impact development (LID) structures, permeable reactive barriers, treatment wetlands, riparian buffers, artificial lakes and reservoirs, and stream restoration. Our results show a broad range of N-removal effectiveness but suggest that all techniques could be optimized for N removal by promoting and sustaining conditions conducive to biological transformations (e.g., denitrification). Generally, N-removal efficiency is particularly affected by hydraulic residence time, organic carbon availability, and establishment of anaerobic conditions. There remains a critical need for systematic empirical studies documenting N-removal efficiency among EEPs and potential environmental and economic tradeoffs associated with the widespread use of these techniques. Under current trajectories of N inputs, land use, and climate change, ecological engineering alone may be insufficient to manage N in many watersheds, suggesting that N-pollution source prevention remains a critical need. Improved understanding of N-removal effectiveness and modeling efforts will be critical in building decision support tools to help guide the selection and application of best EEPs for N management. 相似文献

The Precautionary Principle is a legal mechanism for managing the environmental risk arising from incomplete scientific knowledge
of a proposal's impacts. The Precautionary Principle is applied to actions that carry with them the potential for serious
or irreversible environmental change. The model proposed in this paper draws on methods used in a range of disciplines for
modeling (potentially highly nonlinear) interactions between multiple parts of a complex system. These methods have been drawn
together under the common mathematical umbrella of Fitness Landscape Theory. It is argued that the model, called “Environmental
Impact Fitness Landscapes,” allows statements about the sensitivity of the gross effect from a set of impacts to be made when the number of impacts in the set, and/or their degree of interaction, is varied.
It is argued that this can be achieved through identification of “meta” or “emergent” properties of the set itself, without
reference to the specific causal chains determining behavior in specific instances. While such properties are very general,
they may at least allow for the parameterization of the effects of sets of impacts where interactions are highly uncertain
and empirical data severely limited, i.e., situations that would typically invoke the Precautionary Principle. 相似文献

Abstract: Systematic consideration of uncertainty in data, model structure, and other factors is generally unaddressed in most Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) calculations. Our previous studies developed the Management Objectives Constrained Analysis of Uncertainty (MOCAU) approach as an uncertainty analysis technique specifically for watershed water quality models, based on a synthetic case. In this study, we applied MOCAU to analyze diazinon loading in the Newport Bay watershed (Southern California). The study objectives included (1) demonstrating the value of performing stochastic simulation and uncertainty analysis for TMDL development, using MOCAU as the technique and (2) evaluating the existing diazinon TMDL and generating insights for the development of scientifically sound TMDLs, considering uncertainty. The Watershed Analysis Risk Management Framework model was used as an example of a complex watershed model. The study revealed the importance and feasibility of conducting stochastic watershed water quality simulation for TMDL development. The critical role of management objectives in a systematic uncertainty assessment was well demonstrated. The results of this study are intuitive to TMDL calculation, model structure improvement and sampling strategy design. 相似文献

The (un)fairness of agricultural markets is frequently invoked, especially by farmers. But fairness is difficult to define and measure. In this paper we link fairness and power with the concept of constrained choice to develop a framework for assessing fairness in agricultural markets. We use network exchange theory to define power from the dependencies that exist in agricultural networks. The structure of agricultural networks and the options that agricultural producers have to participate in agricultural networks affect the degree to which they are dependent on others within the network. Dependency, in turn, affects the choices that agricultural producers have. We consider both the number and nature of these choices. We argue that constraining or limiting choices—both in number and type—violates principles of justice. Importantly, network exchange theory provides a method for assessing constraints in choices and, hence, the fairness of agricultural markets. Such an assessment could potentially lead to new policies that safeguard the liberties of marketplace participants. We present a brief case to illustrate how this framework can inform on the fairness of agricultural markets and conclude with considerations of what this means for policy, particularly in the arena of anti-trust. 相似文献

Trade-offs between ecosystem conservation and agricultural production can more easily be addressed by shifting the view from
the plot scale to the scale of the landscape and integrating biodiversity friendly land use systems into development strategies.
The provision of ecosystem services such as watershed protection and carbon sequestration by natural and complex agro-ecosystems
can play an important role in making such integrated landscape approaches viable. This special issue brings together papers
that were presented at a symposium on agroforestry and landscape scale conservation at the Second World Agroforestry Congress
in Nairobi in August 2009. It is divided into two sections focusing on: (1) the biological mechanisms and implications of
landscape scale conservation strategies as influenced by land use, especially agroforestry; and (2) the economic drivers and
public policies that determine to a large extent the success of agroforestry-based landscape conservation strategies. The
contributions provide evidence both for the potential and limitations of agroforestry in landscape scale conservation and
development strategies and highlight the importance of economic incentives and policies to promote integrated landscape solutions.
This introductory paper summarizes and discusses the contributions and concludes with policy recommendations and research
needs. 相似文献
